Color-Blind Racism In America
Carlos Collins Writing Assignment 1
Hair is a basic element of most of our lives, so to many, hair is a trivial thing. However, the fact that
we live in a social climate that routinely rejects aspects of communities of color, hair has come to be
an increasingly symbolic piece of our racial identities. This is especially true for the black community
in the United States. After generations of countering Eurocentric ideologies surrounding acceptability,
members of the black community are beginning to embrace the acceptance of their own images
despite cultural messages that continue to promote the opposite. In an article written by Khalea
Underwood of Refinery29, she chronicles her experiences with having her hair touched by a white ...

Not everything a white person does is meant to offend you...This is 2017 she was trying to ...
compliment your hair no matter what freaking race you were... (2017). Wise Java s comments are
laced with elements of color blind ideologies as evidenced by his or her blatant dismissal of the racial
context of the situation. This is seen most clearly when Java states that this is 2017...no matter what
race you are. This person is equating a new calendar year to evidence that race no longer has a role in
a country that has been stratified by race since its inception.
Furthermore, there are other dismissive elements found within the comment section of the article as
you read on. One commenter wrote, Black girls in gym class used to touch my butt length hair and
braid it without me even saying it was okay or giving them permission? Keep the micro aggression
and race stuff in your fantasy echo chambers, where it belongs (Individual contributors 2017). The
usage of the phrase fantasy echo chambers shows that the commenter is blatantly denying the
existence of racism and micro aggressions altogether. According to this commenter, race stuff is a
made up phenomenon. Not only is this commenter denying the racial aspect of the situation discussed
in the reading, but he or she is also diminishing what Underwood experienced by comparing it to the
minuscule actions of children who lack inhibition control.

Student Financial Aid For Students
Staring from the 1940s, Student financial aid began to play a significant role in prompting student
access, persistence and completion rate of American Higher Education. Since students can be regarded
as the output of the education, student financial aid also contributes to the social mobility and the
improvement of economics. Federal government, state governments and institutions jointly provide
the funding to certain groups of students. Among all types of financial aid, need based aid and merit
based aid are most important financial aid for students. Higher Education Act of 1965 is a milestone of
the development of need based aid. The Law was intended to strengthen the educational resources of
our colleges and universities and to provide financial assistance for students in postsecondary and
higher education. Specifically, the Pell Grant is the foundation of the federal financial aid system.
While the social turbulence of the 1960s may have been the impetus behind the Pell program, the
groundwork for broad based aid programs is more appropriately attributed to the GI Bill. After 1965,
the Higher Education Act of 1965 was reauthorized several times to achieve the goals. Need based aid
is essential for college access and success. According to Turner s research (2013), every $1000
decrease of tuition price will lead to 4% of increase in college attendance. Evidence suggests that
reducing college costs can increase college entry and persistence (Dynarski Clayton,

Nineteen Minutes Themes
A person can do a lot in a matter of nineteen minutes. Although it may not seem like a very long time,
nineteen minutes forever changed the lives of nearly everyone living in Sterling, New Hampshire.
Beginning at 10:16, 10 lives would be lost, 19 would be injured, and countless people would live in
fear and constantly be brought back to that day. On March 6, 2007, Peter Houghton brought 4 guns
into his high school and began shooting, and shooting, and shooting. Peter s life had been filled with
relentless bullying, ever since his first day of Kindergarten. The book, Nineteen Minutes, shows the
lies and faults of different members of the community during the trial. In this journal, I will be

Josie and Peter Houghton used to be best friends. They would spend every second together: at school,
at home, and anyplace in between that. When Matt Royston, Josie s boyfriend, introduced Josie to a
different lifestyle, their friendship quickly demised. Josie fell under peer pressure and became a part of
the popular group, who happened to initiate most of the bullying. She was half of the perfect couple in
Sterling High School, went to every party, and had the best friends a high school girl could ask for.
Even though every girl was head over heals jealous of her, she also felt like her life was a movie, and
she was just an actress; always acting like someone other than her true self. It was evident that Josie
did not want to act the way she did: I have to act the way people expect me to act. It s part of the

Biography Of Zora Neale Hurston
February is Black History Month, when the country remembers and celebrates the contributions of its
African American citizens. Blacks have been a part of Florida history for the longest of time. Florida
has been shape by historians such as, Zora Neale Hurston, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Joseph W.
Hatchett these historians have paved the way for black s folks toady. To kick it off, Zora Neale
Hurston, her best known work is a novel which captures the culture of a working class black
community. Zora was considered by many people to be the pre eminent (excellent) black female
writer in the country. Her work was everywhere, in major magazines and on bookshelves. She
consulted on screenplays for Hollywood. She was also one of the brightest lights of the Harlem
Renaissance in the 1930s. An occasional collaborator with Langston Hughes and a rival of Richard
Wright . Although she was born in Alabama she s still a big figure for Floridians. Hurston s star faded

The Circle Of Life Sequoia Analysis
The Manifest Destiny in the United States ended at the coast of California for there was no more land
ready to be discovered. Having reached the end of the Manifest Destiny the Americans began to settle
throughout California and due to the settlements, it caused the creation of different culture and history
to appear and vary within each region. As a result, certain regions like Sacramento became rich with
culture and history. In the reading of Notes from a Native Daughter by Didion and the painting titled
The Circle of Life, Sequoia by Roland Lee both talked about the preservation of the history of
California through their writing and visuals. However, these two sources may seem different, but they
are much similar because of the messages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, the similarity of the reading and painting revolves around the idea of preserving the
history of California. In the painting, it concentrates on the idea of the preservation of California s
history through the visual of the giant sequoia tree that acts as the historian of the state. In the reading,
it adds onto the idea of preserving the history of the state through Didion s address of Sacramento s
transition from an agriculture to a more technological based region. Having Didion address this issue,
this shows her concern for preserving the history of Sacramento. Being Sacramento the capital of
California it represents the state because of the migration influx that caused the region to diverse with
culture and diversity just like the entirety of the state, therefore, creates this notion of Sacramento
being the real California. On a different note, the painting created a sense of pride of being
Californians. In the painting, the giant sequoia adds onto the uniqueness of California because the
trees are only found in California according to an online article titled Giant Sequoias and Redwoods:
The Largest and Tallest Trees that states that giant sequoias are found, in 77 scattered groves in
Northern California , (Szalay). Nevertheless, having the giant sequoias found mostly in California
creates a symbol of uniqueness for the state. This idea of having pride

Sociological Research Essay
The first step in sociological research is to create a hypothesis, and then to operationalize an idea by
transforming the subject into something that can be measured. This research can be then carried out in
two ways: either quantitative or qualitative. In both of these fields, there are multiple methods of how
to go about research. Sociological research is important in understanding public attitudes and helping
to enact new policies. It is a way to understand society, and make more informed decisions about the
ideas people discuss. For example, every day a vast amount of people choose to take their life away
for multiple reasons. One aspect of social life that I would like to go more in detail in, is why people
attempt to or actually commit suicide. By understanding the leading causes for suicide, society can
help prevent or at least understand what someone else is going through without places a negative
stigma on their situation.
Furthermore, to research why people attempt to commit suicide I would use a qualitative method to
focus more in depth on the emotional attitudes that people have regarding suicide. The qualitative
method would better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Institutional Review Boards have been created, especially within universities, to make
sure the expected benefits outweigh any possible harms that could result from the research. The
Institutional Review Boards evaluate any moral or ethical concerns, and if any concerns arise the IRB
recommends changes to be made. The IRB attempts to limit social or emotional hardships, and
ensures that participant information is kept anonymous. For research regarding suicide, the IRB would
analyze to see if there are any issues with my hypothesis, and if having small focus groups from an
institutionalized population is an ethical route to

Tyco Merger
What is your opinion of a merger? If you say and think a merger is a bad thing then you are not alone.
Recently, mergers were given a big thumbs down in a poll given to Americans and Canadians. The
definition of a merger is a combination of two or more businesses to form a single firm. The cons of
mergers greatly outnumber the pros because as companies get larger and larger, people lose jobs,
monopolies form, and consumers pay higher prices, resulting in a less competitive and, therefore, less
opportune business market.
Is bigger really better? Big might be sometimes better, but companies, corporations and monopolies
can get too big. Some merged companies become so huge that they lose focus, gain overhead and
increase their expenses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then we have Tyco International Ltd. that merged with Binge/Purge. Such a shame that Tyco s newest
acquisition had questions of fraud, people undermining decisions, and bad accounting practices. My
last example is that of AutoNation. AutoNation is a company recently formed that deals with pre
owned or used cars. It has shut down 23 of its mega stores, and laid off 1,800 employees just because
they overproduced the unwanted plain vanilla models of cars . The company was obviously losing
sight of something important, the demand for that color of car.
Big corporations are less than perfect. As a business gets bigger, the more cons may surface from day
to day business operations. As the company gets bigger, one find oneself having to manage unrelated
businesses, losing strategic focus, dealing with agency costs, administrative costs, having unbalanced
capacities, and ultimately one has a lack of control. Big companies treat consumers different by than
those of a small, competitive business. Big companies try to take over and exploit the economy of the
host nation by paying low wages to workers, by exporting scarce resources, or by adversely interfering
with the development of local business. It just seems that the greater mass achieved by the company
the more it loses sight of what is important. Another big problem with big companies is that they are
so large and wealthy, they may influence the political life of a host nation. As

The term was further expanded on by sociologists Simon Frith and Angela McRobbie in 1978 to

Essay on The Effects of Immigration on the United Kingdom
Migrants are defined as all those who were born outside the UK and were known as aliens or
foreigners . Kostakopoulou calls this assumption into question, arguing that aliens are by definition
outside the bounds of the community by virtue of a circular reasoning which takes for granted the
existence of bounded national communities, and that this which takes for granted the existence of
bounded national communities, and that this process of collective self definition is deeply political and
historically dated. The composition of the current UK migrant population has of course been

Honeyford made an interesting and yet controversial quotation, which was from a French intellectual,
Fannon that wrote.
It s a just reparation which will be paid to us. Nor will we acquiesce in the help for underdeveloped
countries being a program of sisters of charity. This help should be the ratification of a double
realization: the realization by the colonized peoples that it is their due, and the realization by the
capitalist powers that in fact they must pay.
Sir Jones revealed that Britain has grown complacent and that migrants should not be blamed for the
nation s unemployment as they are willing to work for low wages and possess the skills and education
that Britain no longer provide for their own workforce .His opinion was shared by the Home Secretary

When working in the creative media industry you will need to do a lot of research and will come
across the terms, primary, secondary, quantitative, qualitative, market, audience and product research a
lot. The reason for this is because they are the different types of research you will need to use when
gathering information that you need.
Primary research is any type of research that you collect yourself. There are many ways to do so such
as surveys and questionnaires, interviews, observations, focus groups and participating in internet
forums.

You would use a questionnaire to collect data for a survey research. They are normally administered
via telephone, internet and paper. When carrying out a questionnaire or survey you need to consider
weather open or closed questions would be more relevant to the point of the survey/questionnaire. An
open question is a type of question that requires more than just a one word answer and a closed
question is a question that only requires a one word answer, generally yes or no. Surveys /
questionnaires are a good way to gather information because you get the opinions and preferences of
certain groups of people (e.g. genre of game that a gamer prefers, what sort of toys a child plays with).
They don t just have to be aimed at a certain age range it can be aimed at any group of people such as
people who enjoy games, people who enjoy movies or even people who hate certain things, they are
only based on a matter of opinion. These opinions then turn into facts and statistics (e.g. 75% of
people asked enjoy playing games but 25% do not, or 6% of people like doing something but 96% do
not), these statistics are things you will need when generating ideas as you need to know whether the
thing you are making will sell (e.g. according to the statistics the game that will be designed has a very
high chance of selling). When

In the short story Interpreter of Maladies Jhumpa Lahiri uses tone and mood in many different ways to
portray marital discord in the Das and Kapasi family, along with the feelings that come with it. Mrs.

an expertise she had never known, without the meaningful expressions and smiles Raj always insisted

careful culling of words betrays the veiled tension. The moderator has been facilitating a discussion
centred on the difference between leading and managing; many wonder: What s the point? Everyone

Australia, by the way, is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impact of climate change. Several
sectors in Australia have already exposed to the severe effects of this environmental issue including
biodiversity, agriculture, human health, tourism and definitely Australian economy.
First of all, biodiversity is one of the main sectors Australia is well known of, as it has more than one

The change in temperature as well as water quality and quantity would definitely have an undesirable
impact on agriculture. According to some studies, a rise in temperature due to climate change is
predicted to cause decrease in Melbourne s water supply by 7 35%, which is a huge percentage
(Australian Bureau of Statistics 2010). According to the Commissioner Mick Keelty, the head of the
Australian police, We could see a catastrophic decline in the availability of fresh water, (Johnston, T

livestock industries would be another victim to the crisis of climate change as they are very sensitive
to the change in the climate. For example, the change in temperature will increase the appearance of

History Of The Kent House Plantation
Scattered along many of Louisiana s rivers and bayous are majestic, historical homes built during a
time of Southern prosperity. In the South, these homes and surrounding property often called
plantations, were the product of middle to upper class slave owning planters. Central Louisiana is
home to a plantation that is the oldest standing structure in this area. During a recent visit to Kent
House Plantation, I learned of the history, operations, and current events that help to keep the past
alive. The Kent House sits on only four acres of the original seventeen hundred and forty acres given
to Pierre Baillio II in a 1794 Spanish land grant. In 1795 Baillio, a middle class, slave owning, cotton

In 1863, the Union Army made its way into Alexandria. There are several theories on why the army
did not destroy Kent House.
There s a couple of theories, but we don t exactly know why the house was spared. One theory is that
(the Hynsons) were Masons and so was (Union Gen.) Ulysses S. Grant. Another possible reason why
the Kent House was spared is that the Hynsons refused to leave the house. [Although] I don t think
that s true because they would have set fire to the house anyway, and that would have caused the
family to leave. There are two more plausible theories, however, one of which states that the Kent
House was being used as a base of operations for the Union army. Possibly the most believable reason
why the Kent House was not burned is that the son of the plantation s original owner, Pierre Baillio II,

Describe how the Unitarist and Pluralist approaches to conflict would explain the industrial action
taken by the Construction Forestry and Mining Employees Union in forming the Barangaroo picket
line. Introduction: This essay will discuss the two different management approaches towards to the
recent industrial action taken against Lend Lease and identify what differentiate the two approaches.
The second part of the essay will provide an argument of how applying these approaches from the
upper management could potentially change the outcome of the industrial action against Lend Lease.

This action has caused Lend lease sites in lockdown across the country, as stated by one of the
employee Brain Parker The company is not currently bargaining in good faith The above event shows
that if Lend Lease has followed the pluralist approach, the action may be able to be under control as
Lend Lease will act by considering the words and the issues rose between the management and the
employees and can act accordingly to the issue. However, according to the examples shown, Lend
Lease seems to have been following the unitarist approach which has in fact, escalated the conflicts
between the management and their employees as shown in the article published by green Left. The
article mentioned that Lend Lease did not made a sincere approach to the negotiation and offered
something that the Union consider as a joke which did not loosen the tension but added more stress on
top of it. Identify which one of the approaches provides the better explanation. Explain your
reasoning. Based on the industrial action that has been taken against Lend Lease, it shows that Lend
Lease was first using the Unitarist approach to their employees by not willing to negotiate with their
new proposal. This has than created an enormous negative impact on both the social and the company
as the projects were likely being delayed due to the industrial actions. Conclusion: In conclusion, Lend

Using Dr. Philip Guo s OPT to Teach EECS 338 Concepts Dr. Philip Guo, a professor at the
University of Rochester, developed a tool to teach students programming and programming language
concepts. This tool is called the Online Python Tutor, or OPT for short. It is a way in which people
who want to learn how to write python or other programming languages can not only learn the syntax
of the language, but also see a visual representation of how the code operates. In this online tutoring
application, the code s compilation is shown in frames and objects. This sort of organization can also
be applied to concepts that we have learned in EECS 338: Introduction to Operating Systems and

Managerial Decision Making Is Not Only Influenced By An...
Thesis Statement: Managerial decision making is not only influenced by an individual s personality
but also by some social factors. What is decision making? Defining decision making is a hard task just
as it would be to define knowledge: it is a process we use on a daily basis, but when it comes to find a
way to describe how it works we encounter many obstacles. That is due to the fact that each one of us
has his/her unique decision making process, which is continuously built in time. Several academic
definition of decision making exist, depending on the kind of situation in which the decision takes
place. For a manager, the decision making is a core process, and unfortunately half of the decision
taken by management in an organization fail (Nutt, 1999), thus key importance has been given lately
in researching this field. A business related definition states that decision making is the thought
process of selecting a logical choice from the available options . This definition highlights that despite
the wish of giving to this process an objective and constant trait, both time and subjectiveness are
instead crucial. As a matter of fact, when a decision has to be made, even if it is a business decisions,
not only rationality comes into the picture: past experience, cognitive biases, age and individual
differences, belief in personal relevance, and an escalation of commitment, all influence what choices
people make (Dietrich, 2010). In other words, analyzing the above

An Analysis of Dreams Deferred by Langston Hughes
Importance of Achieving Dreams It is true that people often dream widely and unrealistically. But
some people dream about basic human rights such as dignity, freedom, liberty, equal rights, and access
to education. Socio economic and political conditions sometimes put people in dire situations where
they do not have access to such fundamental human needs. For such people, achieving their dreams is
especially important, as the shattering of their dreams may lead to the shattering of their lives
altogether. One can think of numerous such people, but one glaring example is the case of
undocumented students in the United States who dream about equal rights and access to higher
education. These students struggle with a lot of problems in their lives and some of those problems are
beyond their control. It is important therefore that the government and the public build mechanisms
that would allow the dreams of these students come into realization. It is important to keep in mind
that the decision for undocumented children to be in the United States was not their own. They were
forced out of their home countries or grew up in America because their parents had immigrated to the
United States. Mario Escobar, for instance, lost his father, grandmother, and cousins in Salvadoran
civil war. As an undergraduate at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he would go to
classes hungry and wore used clothes that he bought from Goodwill because he was poor and not
eligible for

are the closest specie compared with humans. The experiment that Harlow conducted consisted of the
infant monkeys being taken away from their birth mother, being placed in cages with a wired clothed

What Is The Purpose Of The Narrative Once Upon A Time
Humans tell stories to themselves and others as a means of making sense of their world and as a way
to promote learning and spread information, or to simply entertain themselves. Completed stories
show evidence of two main parts: an underlying structure
(how the story is organized) that contains the story s intrinsic meaning and, then, there is a lesser
meaning, which is the way the story s structure is presented in the words and symbols, including
metaphors. Although the events that compose a story (plot) may not happen in a sequential order, it is
important for people or a culture to create a story in such a way that it will construct their reality and
give meaning to their subjective experience. Thus, The Narrative ... Show more content on

Once upon a time there was an evening where the winds were strong and the streets were lonely and a
mother attempted to put her new infant to sleep. Soon after leaving the nursery, there was a sudden
upheaval in the household coming out of the baby s room. The mother was puzzled and alarmed by
her infant s outcry. Needing to soothe her baby, the mother took her child to the closest pharmacy that
was open 24hours a day. When they arrived, mother stumbled upon a young man who was wise, way
before his age. With ease, he guided the frantic mother into a long aisle. There, the anguished mother
found herself unable to make sense of what was around her because there was just so much from
which to choose and far too many aisles to wander through with a crying child. Once again, the man
diligently directed her, this time to an unknown product. The wise man, faded into the background, as
the mother stepped forward and looked with doubt and curiosity at this strange and mysterious
product. The mom s eyes settle on a visual metaphor that she found on this obscure product. The
mother saw on the blue box a female figure holding an infant in her arms, while she gracefully held
the infant s head with the palm of her right hand. The tired mother noticed that the female figure
pictured on the box was blissfully looking at the sleeping

Sexual Orientation In The LGBT Community
The term LGBT was created around the 1980s. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender. The acronym was first a 14 lettered word to try and make an effort to represent all the
different sexual orientations. Today there are about 58, maybe even more, different sexual
orientations. Gender orientation is the legal and social status as men and women. Sexual orientation
however, is what defines someone as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. The best way to explain it
is sexual orientation is whom you go to bed with and gender orientation is who you go to bed as.
People of the LGBT community were treated very crudely, even today there is discrimination against
people in the gay community. They would be sent to psychiatric wards because the majority of the
people back then would say they were sick in their minds and didn t know what else to do with them.
It wasn t until 1973 when the American Psychiatric Association ruled out homosexualtiy as an illness
when Dr. Evelyn Hooker, who studied gay men, wrote a innovated paper on how homosexual men are
just as adjusted as hetrosexual men, if not possibly even more. The LGBT community would also be
at risk from being fired from their jobs because of their orientation or they would have their children
taken away from them. Much of the LGBT community were beaten to death because of hate crimes.
Hate crimes against the LGBT were in the highest rate in 2007. On July 16th 2008, a transgender,
Angie Zapata, was beaten

Decentralized Organizations And Its Impact On...
While organizations once typically held centralized structures, the more recent trend is toward
decentralization. Centralization is the extent that and organization s decision making is made at a
single point or by a single person. In centralized organizations, top managers make all of the
decisions, while lower level managers and employees follow their instructions. In decentralized
organizations, decision making is delegated to work groups or the managers who are closest to the
organization s day to day actions. Centralization affects employee/manager relationships by providing
a more stable environment and clarity regarding whom to go to for directions, while decentralization
allows employees to feel less isolated from decision makers and have more autonomy. In terms of its
impact on organizational strategies, decentralization allows for problems to be solved more quickly by
those who have more direct knowledge about the specific customer base, while centralization lets
companies avoid bad choices and maintain a stable environment.
Centralization affects employee/manager relationships by providing clarity about the relationship.
Because it is so structured, it provides a more stable environment with a clear hierarchy. As a result,
centralization provides an unambiguous relationship between managers and their employees. In
centralized organizations, there is no confusion about who to report to or whose instructions to follow.
Simple structures, bureaucracies, and virtual

The Rhetorical Analysis Of The Hope Speech By Harvey Milk
Homosexual people have been misrepresented and refuted their basic civil rights in America over the
years, especially during the late 1970s. During this time, Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected
official in California, was one of the most prominent spokesman on the issues surrounding gay rights.
In 1978 he gave a speech impacting the gay citizens of San Francisco and America, the anti gay right
wing movement supporters, straight allies of the gay movement, and politicians in general. His speech
known as the Hope Speech resonates with people even today as Milk attempted to address gay rights
and the importance of electing gay officials in office, using various rhetorical strategies such as
pathos, logos, and elevated diction. As a skilled speaker, Milk bridged the gap between the majority of
his audience who were not too familiar with homosexuality and those who were. In his speech he uses
pathos to persuade people to join or at least sympathize with his cause, logos to provide a logistical
argument with reason, and ethos to increase credibility. Throughout the speech Milk uses pathos to
connect emotionally to the different audiences he is addressing. To his straight allies, he proclaims that
an ally can not be elected to represent gays because friends can t feel the anger and frustration. They
can sense it in us, but they can t feel it. Because a friend has never gone through what is known as
coming out. This topic also strikes a chord in his gay audience, as coming out is a difficult and
terrifying process. He addresses other minority groups, asking indirectly for their sympathy and
assistance, alluding to the African American civil rights movement of the sixties, and the Latin
American culture s struggles. He references Anita Bryant, an outspoken right wing activist, and tells
his audiences not to fear her or believe her, for she is wrong in her assumptions about gay people. He
also talks of the event in San Francisco where a young man was killed for being gay, causing the
audience to sympathize and also create a sense of urgency for people to make a change. Furthermore,
Milk effectively fills his speech with logos, providing logistical arguments and reason. His major
goals are to persuade

Everything Bad Is Good For You By Steven Johnson
In Everything Bad Is Good For You, Steven Johnson discusses why and how he believes today s
popular culture is actually making us smarter, rather than dumbing us down. Johnson has his book
split into two different parts, focusing mainly on the first part of his book, he talks about the ways
people consume media and how it has become more complex and challenging over the years. The title
headings for each sub chapters are Video Games, Television, Internet, and Movies. Within each
subchapter he uses a vast number of examples from each section to support his argument. The biggest
part the first chapter is dedicated to video games. Johnston suggests that when video games were first
released that people thought they made us dumber and wasted our mind s skills. He uses the example
about how if video games had arrived before books, we would be more hesitant towards books. We
would be looking at the negative aspects of book reading and how they are isolating, under stimulating
and do not engage enough. Stating that we use books to test cognitive benefits attention, memory,
focus and following threads, Johnston goes into a detail about how video games uses all these skills
and more. He uses examples from Tetris, Pac Man, SimCity200 and even The Legend of Zelda.
Continuing his argument that video games engage us more that any other media our there at the
moment, he acknowledges how to reward system and the desire to explore in video games keep us
engaged. No other form of

Relationship Between Employee Satisfaction And Employee...
What is Motivation and why it is crucial to understand its influences? According to Robbins Judge s
Essential to Organizational Behavior textbook, motivation is defined as the processes that accounts for
an individual s intensity, direction and persistence of effort towards attaining an organizational goal.
(Robbins 128)
What inspires an individual to run 20K a week? What pushes one to finish a novel in one sitting?
What draws a person to achieve his goal? What motivates one may not necessary be the same for
another individual. It is a need factor that is different for everyone. In the context of organizational

Because this impacts organization s overall success productivity, revenue and customer satisfaction, it
is imperative that business leaders and management teams focus on improving their employee s
engagement and finding out what motivate them to help change this outlook. Increasing workplace
engagement is fundamental to achieving sustainable growth for all affected. (slide 2) So, the big
question would be, what do they need to get them there?
For centuries, behavioral and social scientists have studied the concept of motivation in hopes of
finding a right formula for success. Years of research poured into understanding motivation have come
up with numerous theories, both favorable and unfavorable. Hence, advice on how it s applied in
today s workforce and organizations are abundant.
During the early 1950s, four popular theories of motivations were introduced: Maslow s Hierarchy of
Needs Theory, McGregor s Theory X and Theory Y, Herzberg Two Factor Theory and McClelland s
Theory of Needs. Although these theories have long thought been embraced by many businesses,
researchers in the 80 raised questions about their validity. At most, these four introduced a foundation
for many and their terminology are still popularly used today. (slide 3)
The best known theory was introduced by Abraham Maslow in 1954, Hierarchy of Needs (Maslow).
Maslow published Motivation and Personality, which introduced

Dual Relationship Of Dual Relationships
Dual relationships in therapy practice are identified as an ethical issue and a boundary violation
(Sawyer, and Prescott, 2010). According to Sawyer and Prescott (2010), this is based in part on the
concepts that the relationships are not equal, the client is vulnerable, and that the primary
responsibility of the clinician is to make care of the client the first priority. Dual relationships are
defined by Syme (2003), as arising in any situation where a therapist assumes more than one
significantly different role either simultaneously or sequentially with a client . This type of
relationship typically refers to two roles overlapping each other. A type of a dual relationship that I
could imagine occurring is taking on family or friends as clients. This is a dual relationship because
the therapist is acting as a professional and as a friend or family member to the client. An example of
this would be as follows, Susan is attempting to enroll her 6 year daughter into an elite private school.
The school requires that an intellectual assessment be completed before the final enrollment stages are
complete. Susan asks her brother, a licensed child psychologist to perform the assessment. The results
revealed that there were some low performance areas and the little girl s IQ was not up to par with the
school s requirement. For this reason, the school decided not to move forward with the enrollment
process. Susan was upset with her psychologist brother for not making

Flaws in the System The requirements for foster parents are not adequate enough to ensure that the

Children that are placed in foster care are neglected, abused, or removed due to extreme circumstances
that occur in the household. Social services play an important role on selecting the right foster parents

The only exception allowed should be if a twenty one year old wants to take in a biological brother or
sister. The risk of allowing younger adults to become foster parents is the short age difference. It s
very common for younger children to be attracted or have little crushes on younger adults close to
their age, but when younger adults are attracted to underage children, that s when the problem occur.
There are younger adults and older adults who want to become foster parents are not applying for the
financial gain or any other incentive but to sexually abuse a child. A single twenty four year old man
was indicted for raping one of his foster sons in 1995 (Incentives to Foster Parents). His sick
obsession with younger children drove him into becoming a foster parent solely to get his hands on
younger children. Not all younger foster parents are not like this man, but the age difference needs to
be raised to at least twenty seven to decrease the chance of something like that from happening again.
Increasing the age difference also ensures that the younger adults maturity level is higher. In Virginia,
prospective foster parents can t house over six children under the age of eighteen. With that many
children under one roof, the children are not getting enough one on one time with the foster parent.
The child would feel lost in the crowd, neglected, and not important. This requirement should be

  • 4. Color-Blind Racism In America Carlos Collins Writing Assignment 1 Hair is a basic element of most of our lives, so to many, hair is a trivial thing. However, the fact that we live in a social climate that routinely rejects aspects of communities of color, hair has come to be an increasingly symbolic piece of our racial identities. This is especially true for the black community in the United States. After generations of countering Eurocentric ideologies surrounding acceptability, members of the black community are beginning to embrace the acceptance of their own images despite cultural messages that continue to promote the opposite. In an article written by Khalea Underwood of Refinery29, she chronicles her experiences with having her hair touched by a white ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not everything a white person does is meant to offend you...This is 2017 she was trying to ... compliment your hair no matter what freaking race you were... (2017). Wise Java s comments are laced with elements of color blind ideologies as evidenced by his or her blatant dismissal of the racial context of the situation. This is seen most clearly when Java states that this is 2017...no matter what race you are. This person is equating a new calendar year to evidence that race no longer has a role in a country that has been stratified by race since its inception. Furthermore, there are other dismissive elements found within the comment section of the article as you read on. One commenter wrote, Black girls in gym class used to touch my butt length hair and braid it without me even saying it was okay or giving them permission? Keep the micro aggression and race stuff in your fantasy echo chambers, where it belongs (Individual contributors 2017). The usage of the phrase fantasy echo chambers shows that the commenter is blatantly denying the existence of racism and micro aggressions altogether. According to this commenter, race stuff is a made up phenomenon. Not only is this commenter denying the racial aspect of the situation discussed in the reading, but he or she is also diminishing what Underwood experienced by comparing it to the minuscule actions of children who lack inhibition control. Moreover, another ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Student Financial Aid For Students Staring from the 1940s, Student financial aid began to play a significant role in prompting student access, persistence and completion rate of American Higher Education. Since students can be regarded as the output of the education, student financial aid also contributes to the social mobility and the improvement of economics. Federal government, state governments and institutions jointly provide the funding to certain groups of students. Among all types of financial aid, need based aid and merit based aid are most important financial aid for students. Higher Education Act of 1965 is a milestone of the development of need based aid. The Law was intended to strengthen the educational resources of our colleges and universities and to provide financial assistance for students in postsecondary and higher education. Specifically, the Pell Grant is the foundation of the federal financial aid system. While the social turbulence of the 1960s may have been the impetus behind the Pell program, the groundwork for broad based aid programs is more appropriately attributed to the GI Bill. After 1965, the Higher Education Act of 1965 was reauthorized several times to achieve the goals. Need based aid is essential for college access and success. According to Turner s research (2013), every $1000 decrease of tuition price will lead to 4% of increase in college attendance. Evidence suggests that reducing college costs can increase college entry and persistence (Dynarski Clayton, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Nineteen Minutes Themes A person can do a lot in a matter of nineteen minutes. Although it may not seem like a very long time, nineteen minutes forever changed the lives of nearly everyone living in Sterling, New Hampshire. Beginning at 10:16, 10 lives would be lost, 19 would be injured, and countless people would live in fear and constantly be brought back to that day. On March 6, 2007, Peter Houghton brought 4 guns into his high school and began shooting, and shooting, and shooting. Peter s life had been filled with relentless bullying, ever since his first day of Kindergarten. The book, Nineteen Minutes, shows the lies and faults of different members of the community during the trial. They would spend every second together: at school, at home, and anyplace in between that. When Matt Royston, Josie s boyfriend, introduced Josie to a different lifestyle, their friendship quickly demised. Josie fell under peer pressure and became a part of the popular group, who happened to initiate most of the bullying. She was half of the perfect couple in Sterling High School, went to every party, and had the best friends a high school girl could ask for. Even though every girl was head over heals jealous of her, she also felt like her life was a movie, and she was just an actress; always acting like someone other than her true self. It was evident that Josie did not want to act the way she did: I have to act the way people expect me to act. It s part of the whole...thing. If you don t... it s complicated. • 8. The Circle Of Life Sequoia Analysis The Manifest Destiny in the United States ended at the coast of California for there was no more land ready to be discovered. Having reached the end of the Manifest Destiny the Americans began to settle throughout California and due to the settlements, it caused the creation of different culture and history to appear and vary within each region. As a result, certain regions like Sacramento became rich with culture and history. In the reading of Notes from a Native Daughter by Didion and the painting titled The Circle of Life, Sequoia by Roland Lee both talked about the preservation of the history of California through their writing and visuals. However, these two sources may seem different, but they are much similar because of the messages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, the similarity of the reading and painting revolves around the idea of preserving the history of California. In the painting, it concentrates on the idea of the preservation of California s history through the visual of the giant sequoia tree that acts as the historian of the state. In the reading, it adds onto the idea of preserving the history of the state through Didion s address of Sacramento s transition from an agriculture to a more technological based region. Having Didion address this issue, this shows her concern for preserving the history of Sacramento. Being Sacramento the capital of California it represents the state because of the migration influx that caused the region to diverse with culture and diversity just like the entirety of the state, therefore, creates this notion of Sacramento being the real California. On a different note, the painting created a sense of pride of being Californians. In the painting, the giant sequoia adds onto the uniqueness of California because the trees are only found in California according to an online article titled Giant Sequoias and Redwoods: The Largest and Tallest Trees that states that giant sequoias are found, in 77 scattered groves in Northern California , (Szalay). Nevertheless, having the giant sequoias found mostly in California creates a symbol of uniqueness for the state. This idea of having pride ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Sociological Research Essay The first step in sociological research is to create a hypothesis, and then to operationalize an idea by transforming the subject into something that can be measured. This research can be then carried out in two ways: either quantitative or qualitative. In both of these fields, there are multiple methods of how to go about research. Sociological research is important in understanding public attitudes and helping to enact new policies. It is a way to understand society, and make more informed decisions about the ideas people discuss. For example, every day a vast amount of people choose to take their life away for multiple reasons. One aspect of social life that I would like to go more in detail in, is why people attempt to or actually commit suicide. By understanding the leading causes for suicide, society can help prevent or at least understand what someone else is going through without places a negative stigma on their situation. • 10. Tyco Merger What is your opinion of a merger? If you say and think a merger is a bad thing then you are not alone. Recently, mergers were given a big thumbs down in a poll given to Americans and Canadians. The definition of a merger is a combination of two or more businesses to form a single firm. The cons of mergers greatly outnumber the pros because as companies get larger and larger, people lose jobs, monopolies form, and consumers pay higher prices, resulting in a less competitive and, therefore, less opportune business market. Is bigger really better? Big might be sometimes better, but companies, corporations and monopolies can get too big. Some merged companies become so huge that they lose focus, gain overhead and increase their expenses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then we have Tyco International Ltd. that merged with Binge/Purge. Such a shame that Tyco s newest acquisition had questions of fraud, people undermining decisions, and bad accounting practices. My last example is that of AutoNation. AutoNation is a company recently formed that deals with pre owned or used cars. What is decision making? Defining decision making is a hard task just as it would be to define knowledge: it is a process we use on a daily basis, but when it comes to find a way to describe how it works we encounter many obstacles. That is due to the fact that each one of us has his/her unique decision making process, which is continuously built in time. Several academic definition of decision making exist, depending on the kind of situation in which the decision takes place. For a manager, the decision making is a core process, and unfortunately half of the decision taken by management in an organization fail (Nutt, 1999), thus key importance has been given lately in researching this field. But some people dream about basic human rights such as dignity, freedom, liberty, equal rights, and access to education. Socio economic and political conditions sometimes put people in dire situations where they do not have access to such fundamental human needs. For such people, achieving their dreams is especially important, as the shattering of their dreams may lead to the shattering of their lives altogether. One can think of numerous such people, but one glaring example is the case of undocumented students in the United States who dream about equal rights and access to higher education. These students struggle with a lot of problems in their lives and some of those problems are beyond their control. It is important therefore that the government and the public build mechanisms that would allow the dreams of these students come into realization. It is important to keep in mind that the decision for undocumented children to be in the United States was not their own. They were forced out of their home countries or grew up in America because their parents had immigrated to the United States. Centralization is the extent that and organization s decision making is made at a single point or by a single person. In centralized organizations, top managers make all of the decisions, while lower level managers and employees follow their instructions. In decentralized organizations, decision making is delegated to work groups or the managers who are closest to the organization s day to day actions. Centralization affects employee/manager relationships by providing a more stable environment and clarity regarding whom to go to for directions, while decentralization allows employees to feel less isolated from decision makers and have more autonomy. In terms of its impact on organizational strategies, decentralization allows for problems to be solved more quickly by those who have more direct knowledge about the specific customer base, while centralization lets companies avoid bad choices and maintain a stable environment. Centralization affects employee/manager relationships by providing clarity about the relationship. Because it is so structured, it provides a more stable environment with a clear hierarchy. During this time, Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, was one of the most prominent spokesman on the issues surrounding gay rights. In 1978 he gave a speech impacting the gay citizens of San Francisco and America, the anti gay right wing movement supporters, straight allies of the gay movement, and politicians in general. His speech known as the Hope Speech resonates with people even today as Milk attempted to address gay rights and the importance of electing gay officials in office, using various rhetorical strategies such as pathos, logos, and elevated diction. As a skilled speaker, Milk bridged the gap between the majority of his audience who were not too familiar with homosexuality and those who were. In his speech he uses pathos to persuade people to join or at least sympathize with his cause, logos to provide a logistical argument with reason, and ethos to increase credibility. Throughout the speech Milk uses pathos to connect emotionally to the different audiences he is addressing. To his straight allies, he proclaims that an ally can not be elected to represent gays because friends can t feel the anger and frustration. They can sense it in us, but they can t feel it. Because a friend has never gone through what is known as coming out. This topic also strikes a chord in his gay audience, as coming out is a difficult and terrifying process. He references Anita Bryant, an outspoken right wing activist, and tells his audiences not to fear her or believe her, for she is wrong in her assumptions about gay people. Johnson has his book split into two different parts, focusing mainly on the first part of his book, he talks about the ways people consume media and how it has become more complex and challenging over the years. The title headings for each sub chapters are Video Games, Television, Internet, and Movies. Within each subchapter he uses a vast number of examples from each section to support his argument. The biggest part the first chapter is dedicated to video games. Johnston suggests that when video games were first released that people thought they made us dumber and wasted our mind s skills. He uses the example about how if video games had arrived before books, we would be more hesitant towards books. We would be looking at the negative aspects of book reading and how they are isolating, under stimulating and do not engage enough. Stating that we use books to test cognitive benefits attention, memory, focus and following threads, Johnston goes into a detail about how video games uses all these skills and more. He uses examples from Tetris, Pac Man, SimCity200 and even The Legend of Zelda. Continuing his argument that video games engage us more that any other media our there at the moment, he acknowledges how to reward system and the desire to explore in video games keep us engaged. • 34. Dual Relationship Of Dual Relationships Dual relationships in therapy practice are identified as an ethical issue and a boundary violation (Sawyer, and Prescott, 2010). According to Sawyer and Prescott (2010), this is based in part on the concepts that the relationships are not equal, the client is vulnerable, and that the primary responsibility of the clinician is to make care of the client the first priority. Dual relationships are defined by Syme (2003), as arising in any situation where a therapist assumes more than one significantly different role either simultaneously or sequentially with a client . This type of relationship typically refers to two roles overlapping each other. A type of a dual relationship that I could imagine occurring is taking on family or friends as clients. This is a dual relationship because the therapist is acting as a professional and as a friend or family member to the client. An example of this would be as follows, Susan is attempting to enroll her 6 year daughter into an elite private school. The school requires that an intellectual assessment be completed before the final enrollment stages are complete. Susan asks her brother, a licensed child psychologist to perform the assessment. The results revealed that there were some low performance areas and the little girl s IQ was not up to par with the school s requirement. For this reason, the school decided not to move forward with the enrollment process. Susan was upset with her psychologist brother for not making ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Are the Children in Good Hands QuinNisha Hurt Mark Gatlin ENGL 110C 26 April 2010 Flaws in the System The requirements for foster parents are not adequate enough to ensure that the children are in good hands. Foster care is when a child is provided with a temporary family life. Children that are placed in foster care are neglected, abused, or removed due to extreme circumstances that occur in the household. Social services play an important role on selecting the right foster parents for the children. The only exception allowed should be if a twenty one year old wants to take in a biological brother or sister. The risk of allowing younger adults to become foster parents is the short age difference. It s very common for younger children to be attracted or have little crushes on younger adults close to their age, but when younger adults are attracted to underage children, that s when the problem occur. There are younger adults and older adults who want to become foster parents are not applying for the financial gain or any other incentive but to sexually abuse a child. A single twenty four year old man was indicted for raping one of his foster sons in 1995 (Incentives to Foster Parents). His sick obsession with younger children drove him into becoming a foster parent solely to get his hands on younger children. Not all younger foster parents are not like this man, but the age difference needs to be raised to at least twenty seven to decrease the chance of something like that from happening again. Increasing the age difference also ensures that the younger adults maturity level is higher. In Virginia, prospective foster parents can t house over six children under the age of eighteen. With that many children under one roof, the children are not getting enough one on one time with the foster parent. The child would feel lost in the crowd, neglected, and not important.
