- I founded Zipcar in 2000, and there are lots of ways to think about its innovation. Yes, we did apply technology to make renting a car as easy and convenient as using your own car. We changed the size of what you bought (a whole car or 24hrmin bundle) into pay as you go. Making access as convenient at ownership. But we also did one other important thing – we turned consumers into co-collaborator. A bunch of what used to be done by the car rental company, we put into the hands of our members. And we called them members – not customers. We had to trust our members – recreating the relationship between seller and buyer. A bunch of the shift, was from something that would have to be paid for by the company, to a service that was almost without cost to the member. Today, I would say that we tapped into the excess capacity offered by our members. Easy for them to note problems with the car, to call in repais, to refill the car on occasion. Their doing these things reduced the cost of the service and made it possible. Thus why I think of them today as co-creators, collaborators.
