Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Teaching approach
• It is a set of principles,

translated into the classroom.
5. Definition of
writing
It means putting letters or symbols on
any surface.
In any communication writing have a
very remarkable place.
Good writing skills allow you to
communicate your message with clarity
and ease.
Writing is a creative skill.
6. Writing as a skill
1. Writing is a one of important skills in communication.
2. Writing is productive skill.
3. Writing skills are highly essentials because
organization needs professional writers.
4. Some people develop writing skills as career like
poets , writers , novelist etc.
5. Good writing skills allow you to communicate your
message with clarity and ease to a far larger
audience to understand.
8. Approaches to teaching writing
• two major approaches:
1. a product-based
approach: Focuses on the
final product
2. a Process-based
approach: Focuses on the
process of writing
9. Product
approach
This is a traditional approach, in
which students are encouraged to
mimic(imitate, copy) a model text,
which is usually presented and
analyzed at an early stage.
10. The product-
based
approach
• Focuses on the accuracy of the final product
• Grammar, spelling, punctuation and
capitalization are accurate
• Bottom-up approach (accuracy of various
language skills - letters, words, sentences,
paragraphs- is the focus)
11. Product
approach
Organization of ideas more important
than the ideas itself
Learners are given a series of
activities that are small steps to
complete before writing a whole text
Emphasizes on End product
12. Stages of product approach
Stage 1
Model texts
stage 2
controlled writing
stage 3
Organization of
ideas
stage 4
End result of the
learning process
18. Process approach
• Process approaches to writing tend to
focus more on the varied classroom
activities which promote the development
of language use:
brainstorming,
group discussion,
re-writing.
• Such an approach can have any number
of stages, though a typical sequence of
activities could proceed as follows:
19. Stages
• Stage 1
Generating ideas by brainstorming and
discussion: The teacher remains in the
background during this phase, only providing
language support if required, so as not inhibiting
students in the production of ideas.
• Stage 2
Students extend ideas into note form, and judge
quality and usefulness of ideas.
20. Stages
Stage 3
Students organize ideas into a mind map,
spider gram, or linear form. This stage helps
to make the (hierarchical) relationship of
ideas more immediately obvious, which
helps students with the structure of their
texts.
Stage 4
Students write the first draft. This is done
in class and frequently in pairs or groups.
21. Stages
Stage 5
Drafts are exchanged, so that students become the readers
of each other's work.
By responding as readers, students develop an awareness
of the fact that a writer is producing something to be read
by someone else, and thus can improve their own drafts.
Stage 6
Drafts are returned and improvements are made based
upon peer feedback.
22. Stages
•Stage 7
A final draft is written.
•Stage 8
Students once again exchange and
read each other's work and perhaps
even write a response or reply.
23. A summary of the
differences
Process writing

25. Conclusion
Today we learn about basically two popular, yet very
different, approaches of writing
Process approach and product approach
We also learn about stages of these two approaches.
It should be said at the beginning that there is not
necessarily any 'right' or 'best' way to teach writing skills.
The best practice in any situation will depend on the type of
student, the text type being studied, the school system and
many other factors.
