TAP AND THE 5E LESSON CYCLE
Introduction
The designated TAP indicator for this course is
Instructional Plans.
According to NIET… “Time spent developing
strong lesson plans yields many benefits. Lesson
plans contribute to better-managed classrooms
and more effective learning experiences for
students. Instruction in a school using the NIET
evaluation system is based heavily on state
standards, as well as analysis of formative and
summative student assessments. Therefore, it is
important that teachers incorporate these into
their daily planning.” (2011 NIET)

The Descriptors for Instructional Plans:
1. Measurable and explicit goals aligned to state
content standards
2. Activities, materials, and assessments that:
 Are aligned to state standards
 Are sequenced from basic to complex
(teaching of sub-objectives follows a logical
progression)
 Build on prior student knowledge, are relevant
to students’ lives, and integrate other
disciplines
 Provide appropriate time for student work,
student reflection, and lesson and unit closure.

3. Evidence that the plan is appropriate for the age,
knowledge, and interests of all learners, and
4. Evidence that the plan provides regular
opportunities to accommodate individual student

The 5E plan also sequences your lesson is a very
logical progression.
The Engage is an activity that gets your students
excited to learn and will give you an idea of what
they already know. It typically allows them to
access any prior knowledge they might have
about the topic.
Pacing is always a consideration when teaching a
lesson, but with a hands-on inquiry based lesson
it is crucial that you plan on how to segment your
lesson in order to maintain productivity.

Perhaps one of the most important things to
consider is ALIGNMENT.
As you work on your plan, check to make sure
that your lesson objective is aligned with your
activities and that your Evaluation assesses what
you taught… the objective.
Do not assess anything that was not taught and
do not teach anything that is not included in your
objective. This is one of the things I will look at
very closely.

Tap&the 5E Lesson Cycle

  • 1. TAP AND THE 5E LESSON CYCLE
  • 2. Introduction The designated TAP indicator for this course is Instructional Plans. According to NIET… “Time spent developing strong lesson plans yields many benefits. Lesson plans contribute to better-managed classrooms and more effective learning experiences for students. Instruction in a school using the NIET evaluation system is based heavily on state standards, as well as analysis of formative and summative student assessments. Therefore, it is important that teachers incorporate these into their daily planning.” (2011 NIET) TAP & THE 5 LESSON CYCLE 2
  • 3. The Descriptors for Instructional Plans: 1. Measurable and explicit goals aligned to state content standards 2. Activities, materials, and assessments that:  Are aligned to state standards  Are sequenced from basic to complex (teaching of sub-objectives follows a logical progression)  Build on prior student knowledge, are relevant to students’ lives, and integrate other disciplines  Provide appropriate time for student work, student reflection, and lesson and unit closure. TAP & THE 5 LESSON CYCLE 3
  • 4. The Descriptors for Instructional Plans: (cont.) 3. Evidence that the plan is appropriate for the age, knowledge, and interests of all learners, and 4. Evidence that the plan provides regular opportunities to accommodate individual student needs. TAP & THE 5 LESSON CYCLE 4
  • 5. Other… The 5E plan also sequences your lesson is a very logical progression. The Engage is an activity that gets your students excited to learn and will give you an idea of what they already know. It typically allows them to access any prior knowledge they might have about the topic. Pacing is always a consideration when teaching a lesson, but with a hands-on inquiry based lesson it is crucial that you plan on how to segment your lesson in order to maintain productivity. Other… Perhaps one of the most important things to consider is ALIGNMENT. As you work on your plan, check to make sure that your lesson objective is aligned with your activities and that your Evaluation assesses what you taught… the objective. Do not assess anything that was not taught and do not teach anything that is not included in your objective. This is one of the things I will look at very closely. TAP & THE 5 LESSON CYCLE 7
