This document discusses ways that teachers incorporate learning about nonfiction texts into their literacy blocks. It provides examples of a 2nd grade teacher including both fiction and nonfiction books in her classroom library. First graders are shown writing about nonfiction materials at a writing center and locating places on maps during guided reading. Older 2nd graders work in small groups to research topics that they will later present to the class. The teachers have integrated reading and writing into subjects like science, social studies, math, music and art. This allows children to read and write about things they are curious about while also teaching other subject areas.
