Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of ancient organisms. The Law of Superposition states that in undisturbed rock layers, younger rocks will lie above older rocks. Relative dating determines if one event or object is older or younger than another by examining rock layers and fossils. Index fossils are fossils found in only one geologic age that can be used to date the rock layers they are found in. An activity demonstrates arranging index cards in order from oldest to youngest rock layer based on clues about which layers contain certain fossils or letters.
