1. INTRODUCTION
A smart city is a developed urban area that creates sustainable economic development and providing
quality of life to the citizens in multiple areas. The smart city uses digital technologies to develop standard
of living and to reduce the use of natural resources, lives sustainable way. For increasing urban growth and
population and risks faced due to lack of technology we have to create smart cities in which overall
development would come in all sectors and public facilities. As India’s population continues to grow, more
citizens will move to cities. To accommodate this massive urbanization, India needs to nod smarter ways to
manage complexities, reduce expenses, increase efficiency and improve the quality of life1
. These create a
huge employment in cities. A smart city should have the access to all the basic facilities such as hospitals,

educational institutions, transport facilities, the internet, features we have to use advanced technology in a
water meter, LED lights, solid waste management, gray water management, rainwater harvesting to have a
smart city and smart ward to have sustainable life2
.
A model study has taken as the 23rd
ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to transform into the
smart ward, based on the study of the ward of various parameters, problems analyzed and suggested smart
solutions on major contributions. The main objectives of the paper are to know the importance of the smart
city and its advantages, efficient usage of renewable resources, using technology to adopt smart solutions
for sustainable living.
2. METHODOLOGY
A Model Taken as 23rd
Ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation
Vijayawada is a city on the banks of river Krishna, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The city has 59
municipal wards, in that 23rd
ward has taken on model study
Vijayawada city population
Total population : 1039518
MALE : 527307
FEMALE : 512211,
23rd
ward population
Total population : 23794
MALE : 11895
FEMALE : 11899, As per 2011 census.
3. TECHNIQUES USED FOR SMART WARD
3.1. Street Lights
By having incandescent bulbs (or) sodium vapor lamps that consume more power and burden to the
government. If these bulbs are changed to LED (light emitting diode) bulbs3
we can reduce power
consumption and also long living4
. For a brightness of 400-500 (lumens). The power consumption between
LED, incandescent bulbs and CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) is shown in Table 1. and Figure 1-2.
Table 1 Difference of energy consumptions
TYPE OF BULB LIFE SPAN CONSUMPTION
LED 50000 hours 6-8 watts
INCADESCENT BULB 1200 hours 60 watts
CFL 800 hours 13-15 watts

Figure 1 Sodium vapor lamp
Figure 2 LED Street Lights
Number of streets in 23rd
ward- 20
Number of street lights/street – 7(approximately) =140
Generally, street lights are sodium vapor lamps of orange lights they consume 150 watts, when we replace
the same amount of light in 60 watts of LED bulb we can save 50% and more
140 x 150 =21000 watts
140 x 60 = 8400 watts
So we can save 12600 watts
3.2. Water Meters
It is the measure of water usage, now a day’s water scarcity is increasing so as to reduce the water wastage
water meters are used to note the readings of our usage by paying the bills as per the usage5
,so the wastage
can reduce and eliminate fake connections, a typical water meter is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3 A typical water meter
Study on Smart City to Transform 23rd Ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to Smart Ward
http://www.iaeme.com/IJCIET/index.asp 241 editor@iaeme.com
In our 23rd
ward total families 6000(approximately)
By keeping water meters, we can reduce up to 20-30% of water
Water usage person/day -150liters (approximately) *4=600
Water usage =6000*600=3600000liters
20% of reduced=720000lts
We can save up to 720000lts by water meters
3.3. Solid Waste Management
From Vijayawada city, daily- 550 T (source from VMC)
Daily Waste collected from 23rd
ward-14T
For a week -14*7=98=100T (approximately)
In Punjab using cattle dung 2MW/DAY power by using 235 TPD (tons per day) - by biomass method.
Waste to energy technologies6
produces the following energy in Table 27
.
Table 2 Waste to energy technologies
Waste to energy technology Temperature(0
F) Energy production
KWH/TON/MSW(municipal
solid waste)
Incineration 1000-2000 544
Pyrolysis 1200-2200 571
Conventional gasification 1450-3000 685
Plasma arc gasification 7200-12600 816
3.4. Grey Water Management
Daily 100 liters (approximately) of bathing water/family/day is going into wastage so as to manage this
water for greenery and gardening purpose, we can increase trees in our house and decreasing municipal
water for gardening8
.
We can save daily 50ltres of water/day/family
Number of families - 6000
We can save water 6000*50=300000 lts (liter) in 23 ward
3.5. Underground Drainage System
In our houses, the waste water is going to side drainage, so the unhealthy atmosphere will be created and
diseases may occur with mosquitoes. So, when the house drainage pipe is connected to under system, it
will not flow into side drains.
3.6. Financial Inclusion
Every student and family must have a bank account so all government benefits will be directly transferred
to bank holder and money will become under country economy and banking will spread and transparency
will be there. In our ward total, 6000 families in that 5345 will have bank accounts and remaining 655
families have to become under banking
Total-6000
Existing-5345
Balance-655
N. Jagadeesh and T. Reshma
http://www.iaeme.com/IJCIET/index.asp 242 editor@iaeme.com
3.7. Skill Development Program
Skill development program is created in urban areas so as to create employment in various sectors by
giving them training in a skilled way.
Until now
Total No of persons enrolled for training in our ward -4910
No of persons given training -4749
Balance persons -161
3.8. E-Governance
When all the services go digitally we can have accurate data and transparency of government will be more
having more revenue in taxes9
• Payment of taxes
• Grievance
• Opinion on public schemes
• Online applications
3.9. Rain Water Harvesting
Now a day’s water is complex thing, to save the rain water we should adopt water saving methods as well
as rain water saving methods for efficient usage of water and to increase the ground level10
Every house must have the rain water saving pits in order to save the water for sustainable healthy life
In our ward -1000 houses (approximately)
Only 40 houses have rain water pits
So, the government should take necessary steps to create awareness and people should co-ordinate with
them.
3.10. Roads Connectivity
Every road should be connected to the main service road, to have the access for effective transport, every
road should be wide enough for transport and emergency services like fire engine and ambulance11
In 23rd
ward
CC roads - 8.92km
BT roads – 0.600km
3.11. Education Facilities
Every ward should have elementary, high schools and junior college of government
Elementary schools - 3
High schools - 2
Junior college - 1
3.12. Recreation Parks
Every ward should have Recreation Park with flush greenery and walking tracks. In this urban world for a
healthy and stress-free life parks and walking tracks are needed12
In thisward, one park is there
Name of the park – Ambedkar Park
Study on Smart City to Transform 23rd Ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to Smart Ward
http://www.iaeme.com/IJCIET/index.asp 243 editor@iaeme.com
The park is not in maintenance, this should be developed by government or NGO’s (non-government
organization) by creating awareness about healthy life.
3.13. Rating for Wards
If we give a rating to the wards according to the development programs there will be a healthy competition
and encourage sponsors by giving awards to them .so that every ward will be developed.
4. CONCLUSIONS
Due to resource constraints, there will be a problem in the future to provide all the services to the residents.
To continue to serve and to improve the standard of living of the growing population, it is necessary to
develop smart cities and smart wards, aims to make optimal and sustainable use of all resources.
• By adopting parameters and smart solutions at a sequence stages levels we can achieve smart city and smart
ward
• The government should be transparent in its role to complete goals of the country, having understandable
between state and central.
• People should have awareness about smart services and their uses
• By Citizen Participation with the government is main important to encourage and to accept rules and
regulations, so we can achieve smart city in a healthy manner.

INTRODUCTION A smart city is a developed urban area that creates sustainable economic development and providing quality of life to the citizens in multiple areas. The smart city uses digital technologies to develop standard of living and to reduce the use of natural resources, lives sustainable way. For increasing urban growth and population and risks faced due to lack of technology we have to create smart cities in which overall development would come in all sectors and public facilities. As India’s population continues to grow, more citizens will move to cities. To accommodate this massive urbanization, India needs to nod smarter ways to manage complexities, reduce expenses, increase efficiency and improve the quality of life1 . These create a huge employment in cities. A smart city should have the access to all the basic facilities such as hospitals,
  • 2. Study on Smart City to Transform 23rd Ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to Smart Ward http://www.iaeme.com/IJCIET/index.asp 239 editor@iaeme.com educational institutions, transport facilities, the internet, features we have to use advanced technology in a water meter, LED lights, solid waste management, gray water management, rainwater harvesting to have a smart city and smart ward to have sustainable life2 . A model study has taken as the 23rd ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to transform into the smart ward, based on the study of the ward of various parameters, problems analyzed and suggested smart solutions on major contributions. The main objectives of the paper are to know the importance of the smart city and its advantages, efficient usage of renewable resources, using technology to adopt smart solutions for sustainable living. 2. METHODOLOGY A Model Taken as 23rd Ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Vijayawada is a city on the banks of river Krishna, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The city has 59 municipal wards, in that 23rd ward has taken on model study Vijayawada city population Total population : 1039518 MALE : 527307 FEMALE : 512211, 23rd ward population Total population : 23794 MALE : 11895 FEMALE : 11899, As per 2011 census. 3. TECHNIQUES USED FOR SMART WARD 3.1. Street Lights By having incandescent bulbs (or) sodium vapor lamps that consume more power and burden to the government. If these bulbs are changed to LED (light emitting diode) bulbs3 we can reduce power consumption and also long living4 . For a brightness of 400-500 (lumens). The power consumption between LED, incandescent bulbs and CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) is shown in Table 1. and Figure 1-2. Table 1 Difference of energy consumptions TYPE OF BULB LIFE SPAN CONSUMPTION LED 50000 hours 6-8 watts INCADESCENT BULB 1200 hours 60 watts CFL 800 hours 13-15 watts
  • 3. N. Jagadeesh and T. Reshma http://www.iaeme.com/IJCIET/index.asp 240 editor@iaeme.com Figure 1 Sodium vapor lamp Figure 2 LED Street Lights Number of streets in 23rd ward- 20 Number of street lights/street – 7(approximately) =140 Generally, street lights are sodium vapor lamps of orange lights they consume 150 watts, when we replace the same amount of light in 60 watts of LED bulb we can save 50% and more 140 x 150 =21000 watts 140 x 60 = 8400 watts So we can save 12600 watts 3.2. Water Meters It is the measure of water usage, now a day’s water scarcity is increasing so as to reduce the water wastage water meters are used to note the readings of our usage by paying the bills as per the usage5 ,so the wastage can reduce and eliminate fake connections, a typical water meter is shown in Figure 3. Figure 3 A typical water meter
  • 4. Study on Smart City to Transform 23rd Ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to Smart Ward http://www.iaeme.com/IJCIET/index.asp 241 editor@iaeme.com In our 23rd ward total families 6000(approximately) By keeping water meters, we can reduce up to 20-30% of water Water usage person/day -150liters (approximately) *4=600 Water usage =6000*600=3600000liters 20% of reduced=720000lts We can save up to 720000lts by water meters 3.3. Solid Waste Management From Vijayawada city, daily- 550 T (source from VMC) Daily Waste collected from 23rd ward-14T For a week -14*7=98=100T (approximately) In Punjab using cattle dung 2MW/DAY power by using 235 TPD (tons per day) - by biomass method. Waste to energy technologies6 produces the following energy in Table 27 . Table 2 Waste to energy technologies Waste to energy technology Temperature(0 F) Energy production KWH/TON/MSW(municipal solid waste) Incineration 1000-2000 544 Pyrolysis 1200-2200 571 Conventional gasification 1450-3000 685 Plasma arc gasification 7200-12600 816 3.4. Grey Water Management Daily 100 liters (approximately) of bathing water/family/day is going into wastage so as to manage this water for greenery and gardening purpose, we can increase trees in our house and decreasing municipal water for gardening8 . We can save daily 50ltres of water/day/family Number of families - 6000 We can save water 6000*50=300000 lts (liter) in 23 ward 3.5. Underground Drainage System In our houses, the waste water is going to side drainage, so the unhealthy atmosphere will be created and diseases may occur with mosquitoes. So, when the house drainage pipe is connected to under system, it will not flow into side drains. 3.6. Financial Inclusion Every student and family must have a bank account so all government benefits will be directly transferred to bank holder and money will become under country economy and banking will spread and transparency will be there. In our ward total, 6000 families in that 5345 will have bank accounts and remaining 655 families have to become under banking Total-6000 Existing-5345 Balance-655
  • 5. N. Jagadeesh and T. Reshma http://www.iaeme.com/IJCIET/index.asp 242 editor@iaeme.com 3.7. Skill Development Program Skill development program is created in urban areas so as to create employment in various sectors by giving them training in a skilled way. Until now Total No of persons enrolled for training in our ward -4910 No of persons given training -4749 Balance persons -161 3.8. E-Governance When all the services go digitally we can have accurate data and transparency of government will be more having more revenue in taxes9 • Payment of taxes • Grievance • Opinion on public schemes • Online applications 3.9. Rain Water Harvesting Now a day’s water is complex thing, to save the rain water we should adopt water saving methods as well as rain water saving methods for efficient usage of water and to increase the ground level10 Every house must have the rain water saving pits in order to save the water for sustainable healthy life In our ward -1000 houses (approximately) Only 40 houses have rain water pits So, the government should take necessary steps to create awareness and people should co-ordinate with them. 3.10. Roads Connectivity Every road should be connected to the main service road, to have the access for effective transport, every road should be wide enough for transport and emergency services like fire engine and ambulance11 In 23rd ward CC roads - 8.92km BT roads – 0.600km 3.11. Education Facilities Every ward should have elementary, high schools and junior college of government Elementary schools - 3 High schools - 2 Junior college - 1 3.12. Recreation Parks Every ward should have Recreation Park with flush greenery and walking tracks. In this urban world for a healthy and stress-free life parks and walking tracks are needed12 In thisward, one park is there Name of the park – Ambedkar Park
  • 6. Study on Smart City to Transform 23rd Ward of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to Smart Ward http://www.iaeme.com/IJCIET/index.asp 243 editor@iaeme.com The park is not in maintenance, this should be developed by government or NGO’s (non-government organization) by creating awareness about healthy life. 3.13. Rating for Wards If we give a rating to the wards according to the development programs there will be a healthy competition and encourage sponsors by giving awards to them .so that every ward will be developed. 4.
