A smart card is a credit card-sized plastic card with an embedded microchip for storing data for various applications, including electronic payments. The first patent for the smart card concept was filed in 1970 by Dr. Kunitaka Arimura in Japan. Smart cards can be categorized into three types: contact, contactless, and combination, and are used in areas like telecommunications, e-commerce, and banking.
