INTRODUCTION:
• The concept of a smart card is not particularly new, however the
practical use of smart cards in a range of diverse applications has
never been more popular.
• It provides a first introduction to a wide range of smart cards and
tokens, considering the various types, capabilities, popular
applications and the practicality of their development and deployment.
WHAT IS SMART CARD?
A smart card, chip card, or integrated
circuit card (ICC), is any pocket-sized card
that has embedded integrated circuits.
A smart card, chip card, or integrated
circuit card (ICC), is any pocket-sized card
that has embedded Integrated circuits.
HISTORY:
• 1970 – Dr. Kunitaka Arimura of Japan filed the first and only patent on the smart card
concept.
• 1974 – Roland Moreno of France filed the original patent for the IC card, later dubbed the
“smart card”.
• 1986 – 14,000 cards equipped with the Bull CP8 were distributed to clients of the Bank of
Virginia and the Maryland National Bank. 50,000 Casio cards were distributed to clients of
First National Palm Beach Bank and the Mall Bank.
• 1987- smart-card-based drivers license in Turkey.
• 1992 – A nationwide prepaid (electronic purse) card project (DANMONT) was started in
Denmark.
• 2002 – Estonia citizen smart card.
• 2012 – Millions of PIV and CAC cards deployed in the U.S.
• 2014 – 3.4 billion EMV cards in circulation worldwide; U.S. introduces EMV cards
IMPORTANCE OF SMART CARD:
• It can store 7000 times of magnetic cards.
• It can be updated easily.
• It have a high security such as Bio-metric pin and face reading etc…
• It can be used for different purposes like debit cards etc….
CONFIGURATIONS & DIMENSIONS OF
CARD:
• 256 Bytes to 4KB RAM.
• 8KB to 32KB ROM.
• 1KB to 32KB EEPROM.
• 8Bit to 32BIT cpu.
• 8051 Design.
CARD CONSTRUCTION:
• Mostly all chip cards are built from layers of differing
materials, or substrates, that when brought together properly
gives the card a specific life and functionality.
• The typical card today is made from PVC, Polyester or
Polycarbonate. The card layers are printed first and then
laminated in a large press.
• The next step in construction is the blanking or die cutting.
This is followed by embedding a chip and then adding data to
the card. In all, there may be up to 30 steps in constructing a
card.
• The total components, including software and plastics, may
be as many as 12 separate items; all this in a unified package
that appears to the user as a simple device.

TYPES OF CARDS:
CONTACT SMART CARD.
• These are the most common type of smart card. Electrical contacts
located on the outside of the card connect to a card reader when the
card is inserted. This connector is bonded to the encapsulated chip in
the card.
CONTACTLESS SMART CARDS:
• Contactless smart cards were first used for
electronic ticketing in 1996 in Hong Kong
• A contactless smart card is a contactless
credential whose dimensions are credit-card size.
• Its embedded integrated circuits can store (and
sometimes process) data and communicate with a
terminal via NFC.
MULTI-MODE COMMUNICATION CARDS:
These cards have multiple methods of communications, including
ISO7816, ISO14443 and UHF gen 2. How the card is made determines
if it is a Hybrid or dual interface card.
Types are:
• Multi-component Cards
• Dual interference
• Hybrid Cards
MULTI-MODE COMMUNICATION CARDS:
HYBRID CARDS
Hybrid cards have multiple
chips in the same card.
These are typically attached
to each interface separately,
such as a MIFARE chip and
antenna with a contact 7816
chip in the same card.
DUAL INTERFERENCE:
These cards have one chip
controlling the
communication interfaces.
The chip may be attached to
the embedded antenna
through a hard connection,
inductive method or with a
flexible bump mechanism.
MULTI COMPONENET:
These types of cards are for a
specific market solution. For example,
there are cards where the fingerprint
sensor is built on the card. Or one
company has built a card that
generates a one-time password and
displays the data for use with an
online banking application
WORKING:
The system consists of 4 main parts:
• A smart Card which is generally a contact memory smart card which
contains the information about the individual.
• A smart card reader which is generally a contact smart card reader and is
used to read information from the card.
• A controller which receives data from the smart card reader via the RS232
interface.
• A load which is a relay in this case, used to drive a motor and connected to
the controller via the relay driver IC.
SMART CARD READER:
ADVANTAGES: DIS-ADVANTAGES:
• Persistent, protected storage.
• Processing power.
• Packaging.
• Slow Adoption And Cost.
• Security Concerns.
APPLICATIONS: USAGE FOR A
DECADE:• Telecommunications:The most prominent
use of smart card technology is in the
development of SIM card or Subscriber
Identity Module.
• Domestic: The most frequently used smart
card in domestic field is the DTH smart card.
FUTURE SCOPE:
• In the future, these multi-purpose credentials will even be virtualized
so users can carry them in their phones, memo
• it enables them to add more applications to existing physical access
systems and credentials, or extends the use of existing applications.ry
sticks or other electronic devices.
CONCLUSION:
• Smart cards can add convenience and safety to any transaction of
value and data; but the choices facing today's managers can be
daunting.
• We hope this site has adequately presented the options and given
you enough information to make informed evaluations of performance.
• It is our sincere belief that informed users make better choices, which
leads to better business for everybody.
