FITNESS FOR
PURPOSE
Do you think your installation successfully interpreted the Creative
Brief? How/why do you think this? How does it compare to similar
artists/works?
My idea fit into the brief of “A visual exploration of space, time and
motion” as I used the ticking of a clock to capture the passing of time,
while it goes out of sync with the clock to show that the passing of time
is not just the hands of a clock but a thing that flows throughout
everything. While to show the motion, I decided to use the hidden
motions of the human body, such as things that we don’t see including
organs and the way we see things for what we see on the outside and
not what they really are. I show this using the painted stomach, and the
drinking of the liquid.
While space instead of taking this into the “Intergalactic” I chose space
as the things around us, including workers of shops and cafes that we
overlook and see as automatons, and the posters that tell us what too
do and what too drink and what too feel and watch.
I referenced Douglas Gordans monster to show how there is real feeling
and personality behind peoples job roles.

COMPARED TO ORIGINAL
INTENTIONS
Did your installation match your planned intentions? Qualify
how/why it did this, refer to specific elements of your final piece that
support your arguments.
I think my installation defiantly achieved my original plans because I
followed my planning properly and had all the right equipment to
hand, I also think because of the feed back that I got, that people
understood my ideas.
My plans with the dinner lady scene seemed far fetched in my
planning, but when I filmed it I feel like I achieved extremely close to
my original story board.

EFFECTIVENESS OF
TECHNIQUES
What specific techniques did you use in your video installation?
How well were these executed [in your opinion]? Qualify why you
think this [with examples from your production]. How might you
have improved it?
I used a few techniques, such as my lighting during the stomach
scene made the stomach a lot lighter than the background so when
it came to editing I could darken the back ground to pitch black.
With the editing I changed the colour gradient too make the film
duller.

TECHNICAL
QUALITIES
Assess the technical qualities [camerawork, sound, editing, etc] of
your final piece. What worked, what didn’t work, how could you
improve this?
The camera work that I did was mainly stationary shots, such as the
minuet of filming of the food poured on the chest, I went for this
look as I wanted the video too seem long and slow. I wanted to keep
sound very minimal, using a clock ticking to represent time passing,
a lot of the feedback for this was that they liked the feel of it as it
made them think about all the time that had passed within the space
of the video.
With the editing I wanted minimal colours as well so that they
wouldn’t distract from the point of the video. So using the colour
corrector editing tool I dimmed the colours and increased the
blacks. I think this worked well, as people said, it gave the video a
more arty feel.

CREATIVE/ARTISTIC
QUALITIES
Assess the creative and artistic qualities of your advert. What worked, what didn’t
work, how could you improve this? Could it be freely interpreted or did it require
explanation?
My work I tried to use a lot of different words that would make people think about
what we are actually doing, such as when we go to bed, we lie down to hallucinate
and go into a sort of comatose state, I wrote “Hallucinate” onto a pillow so people
will notice and think about that. This came under the motions part of the briefing
as it is the inner motions of the human body. I slowed down the speed of most of
the clips that I took so that it would seem like more of a dreamy slow sequence,
as I feel like life is more like that than quick paced. Plus it gives more time for
people to think about the meaning. The audience seemed to like this, but some
reply that it was very longwinded.
The sound is just ticking of a clock, that goes out of sync with the rest of the
video this is too slow down and distort the passage of time during the video,
which makes the audience feel disconnected.
The water drinking and the food/canteen scene are all about the hidden motions
in the body, as people over look this by just eating and drinking without care
without realising what it does too you. Not many people actually seemed to get
the message of this and thought it was just weird.

1. The audience got lots of different meanings from it, including
some I didn’t intend
2. The audience also got some of the meaning I intended.
3. The audio went down better then I originally planned
Some members of the audience said that they found it Difficult to
understand
I also got told some of the shots went on too long.

technical qualities of your installation
• “The minimal sound is good for an art exhibition, and it also
represents time well”
What they are saying with this is that the ticking of the clock is quite
simple and not too loud so that other exhibitions get too show what they
want, but my film hasn’t lost any less of the meaning.
• “Loops effectively, and erratic editing fits the mood.”
“The colouring makes the installation look more professional”

PURPOSE FEEDBACK
Summarise the responses you received about the suitability of the
installation to the Creative Brief
The creative brief was about time motion and space, while a lot of the
responses I got didn’t seem to understand how it links to the brief, a good
percentage did get it. I think this is because I made the meaning of the film
not very obvious so people would have too think about it, and work out thee
own meaning behind this. Many people got the meaning of “routine” from it,
which is good because I wanted that as an overall theme of the installation.

FEEDBACK SUMMARY
Summarise the feedback you received, was the general response
positive or negative? What specific points did people make? Do you
agree or disagree? Why?
I got a lot of positive feedback from the audience of the brief, a lot of
feedback was people saying it was “weird” or them laughing at the rice
pudding scene, although it was meant to be a serious piece, I thought it
was good that people laughed as it means that they watched it and will
remember it.
I got lots of feedback using the word “creative sets” Or creative ideas”
Which means that people noticed the mise en scene of the video.
Lots of people missed out the actuall “motion” part of the installation,
which is why I dropped rice pudding on a chest. This was too show the
hidden motions of the body.
I disagree with the comment about putting music over it, as this I think
would distract the audience from the main point of the clock ticking.
Although I think music could be good, it was not what I was going for in
this project.

CONCLUSION
Based on Stage 1 and 2, summarise the overall effectiveness and
success of your installation piece. Refer to specific examples that
support your explanation.
I think the piece went well overall, as a lot of the audience thought a lot about the
meaning and all had different explanations for what they thought it meant. This shows
that my piece was quite thought provoking, and I got told this in my feedback.
While a down side to not making my meaning obvious is that a lot of my feedback was
people telling me that they didn’t see how it related to the brief, this makes me feel like
my installation was less successful.

IMPROVEMENTS
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, how might you have improved the
overall project? Think about whether it matched your intentions, the
creativity of the project, the technical aspects employed and how it
compares to other video installation art works and/or artists.
I think if I could go back and do it again I would spend more time on
making the edit look slicker, while also adding in some extra clips too
make it seem more exciting. In my original plan I planned to do some
subliminal messaging, during my editing I decided not too do this, but
looking back I think this would of added an extra depth to the
installation, and I could also change the words of what the messages
were saying. I also think the quality of the dinner lady scene seemed
quite low and I would like to either refilm it or find a way too improve the
quality.
I do think that overall it reached my own intentions and fitted to the
brief, I also think I could of looked at some more installation artists and
taken more aspects of there work and put it into my own. As at the
moment I only reference one artist. While I do think that compared to
other installations mine did stand out and also was thought provoking,
which makes me think this project was a success.

FUTURE ACTION
In the future how might you learn from this project? Think about organisational
aspects, creative and visual aspects, technical skills and any other elements you
feel are appropriate. Produce a 5 point list for further development as a video
producer.
1. do more pre production planning straight away and incorporate more initial
artist research. And organise my preproduction so that it isn't all over the place
2.Learn to create smoother edits so that the video will look more professional.
3.Film more footage and shots too make the video have more too it, also this is
where I could reference more artists.
4. Use more aspects of other video artist work to make the video have more
creative depth, and to improve my grade.
5.Use more camera angles and moving shots so that the film is less linear.

STAGE 1 – INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION ON THE FOLLOWING SLIDES YOU WILL UNDERTAKE YOUR INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION OF YOU INSTALLATION PIECE AND ITS PRODUCTION WHERE NECESSARY YOU SHOULD ADD EXTRA SLIDES IF YOU NEED TO AND ILLUSTRATE YOUR EVALUATION WHERE YOU FEEL IT IS APPROPRIATE ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS CLICK IN THE BOX UNDERNEATH THE QUESTION AND TYPE!
  • 3. FITNESS FOR PURPOSE Do you think your installation successfully interpreted the Creative Brief? How/why do you think this? How does it compare to similar artists/works? My idea fit into the brief of “A visual exploration of space, time and motion” as I used the ticking of a clock to capture the passing of time, while it goes out of sync with the clock to show that the passing of time is not just the hands of a clock but a thing that flows throughout everything. While to show the motion, I decided to use the hidden motions of the human body, such as things that we don’t see including organs and the way we see things for what we see on the outside and not what they really are. I show this using the painted stomach, and the drinking of the liquid. While space instead of taking this into the “Intergalactic” I chose space as the things around us, including workers of shops and cafes that we overlook and see as automatons, and the posters that tell us what too do and what too drink and what too feel and watch. I referenced Douglas Gordans monster to show how there is real feeling and personality behind peoples job roles. STAGE 1 Q1
  • 4. COMPARED TO ORIGINAL INTENTIONS Did your installation match your planned intentions? Qualify how/why it did this, refer to specific elements of your final piece that support your arguments. I think my installation defiantly achieved my original plans because I followed my planning properly and had all the right equipment to hand, I also think because of the feed back that I got, that people understood my ideas. My plans with the dinner lady scene seemed far fetched in my planning, but when I filmed it I feel like I achieved extremely close to my original story board. STAGE 1 Q2
  • 5. EFFECTIVENESS OF TECHNIQUES What specific techniques did you use in your video installation? How well were these executed [in your opinion]? Qualify why you think this [with examples from your production]. How might you have improved it? I used a few techniques, such as my lighting during the stomach scene made the stomach a lot lighter than the background so when it came to editing I could darken the back ground to pitch black. With the editing I changed the colour gradient too make the film duller. STAGE 1 Q3
  • 6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES Assess the technical qualities [camerawork, sound, editing, etc] of your final piece. What worked, what didn’t work, how could you improve this? The camera work that I did was mainly stationary shots, such as the minuet of filming of the food poured on the chest, I went for this look as I wanted the video too seem long and slow. I wanted to keep sound very minimal, using a clock ticking to represent time passing, a lot of the feedback for this was that they liked the feel of it as it made them think about all the time that had passed within the space of the video. With the editing I wanted minimal colours as well so that they wouldn’t distract from the point of the video. So using the colour corrector editing tool I dimmed the colours and increased the blacks. I think this worked well, as people said, it gave the video a more arty feel. STAGE 1 Q4
  • 7. CREATIVE/ARTISTIC QUALITIES Assess the creative and artistic qualities of your advert. What worked, what didn’t work, how could you improve this? Could it be freely interpreted or did it require explanation? My work I tried to use a lot of different words that would make people think about what we are actually doing, such as when we go to bed, we lie down to hallucinate and go into a sort of comatose state, I wrote “Hallucinate” onto a pillow so people will notice and think about that. This came under the motions part of the briefing as it is the inner motions of the human body. I slowed down the speed of most of the clips that I took so that it would seem like more of a dreamy slow sequence, as I feel like life is more like that than quick paced. Plus it gives more time for people to think about the meaning. The audience seemed to like this, but some reply that it was very longwinded. The sound is just ticking of a clock, that goes out of sync with the rest of the video this is too slow down and distort the passage of time during the video, which makes the audience feel disconnected. The water drinking and the food/canteen scene are all about the hidden motions in the body, as people over look this by just eating and drinking without care without realising what it does too you. Not many people actually seemed to get the message of this and thought it was just weird. STAGE 1 Q5
  • 8. SUMMARY Summarise the key strengths and weaknesses of your project that you have identified in your installation piece. Think of 5 strengths and 5 weaknesses 1. The audience got lots of different meanings from it, including some I didn’t intend 2. The audience also got some of the meaning I intended. 3. The audio went down better then I originally planned Some members of the audience said that they found it Difficult to understand I also got told some of the shots went on too long. STAGE 1 Q6

TECHNICAL FEEDBACK POSITIVE • Summarise the positive feedback you received about the technical qualities of your installation • “The minimal sound is good for an art exhibition, and it also represents time well” What they are saying with this is that the ticking of the clock is quite simple and not too loud so that other exhibitions get too show what they want, but my film hasn’t lost any less of the meaning. • “Loops effectively, and erratic editing fits the mood.” “The colouring makes the installation look more professional” STAGE 2 Q1
  • 11. TECHNICAL FEEDBACK NEGATIVE Summarise the negative feedback you received about the technical qualities of your installation “some of the shots lingered longer than they should of” “Would of looked good if you put some moody music over the ticking clock” STAGE 2 Q2

  • 13. CREATIVE FEEDBACK NEGATIVE Summarise the negative feedback you received about the Creative qualities of your installation, you should also consider use of space “Didn’t really get the meaning behind it.” “what is the purpose?” STAGE 2 Q4

SUITABILITY FOR PURPOSE FEEDBACK Summarise the responses you received about the suitability of the installation to the Creative Brief The creative brief was about time motion and space, while a lot of the responses I got didn’t seem to understand how it links to the brief, a good percentage did get it. I think this is because I made the meaning of the film not very obvious so people would have too think about it, and work out thee own meaning behind this. Many people got the meaning of “routine” from it, which is good because I wanted that as an overall theme of the installation. STAGE 2 Q5
  • 15. FEEDBACK SUMMARY Summarise the feedback you received, was the general response positive or negative? What specific points did people make? Do you agree or disagree? Why? I got a lot of positive feedback from the audience of the brief, a lot of feedback was people saying it was “weird” or them laughing at the rice pudding scene, although it was meant to be a serious piece, I thought it was good that people laughed as it means that they watched it and will remember it. I got lots of feedback using the word “creative sets” Or creative ideas” Which means that people noticed the mise en scene of the video. Lots of people missed out the actuall “motion” part of the installation, which is why I dropped rice pudding on a chest. This was too show the hidden motions of the body. I disagree with the comment about putting music over it, as this I think would distract the audience from the main point of the clock ticking. Although I think music could be good, it was not what I was going for in this project. STAGE 2 Q6

  • 17. CONCLUSION Based on Stage 1 and 2, summarise the overall effectiveness and success of your installation piece. Refer to specific examples that support your explanation. I think the piece went well overall, as a lot of the audience thought a lot about the meaning and all had different explanations for what they thought it meant. This shows that my piece was quite thought provoking, and I got told this in my feedback. While a down side to not making my meaning obvious is that a lot of my feedback was people telling me that they didn’t see how it related to the brief, this makes me feel like my installation was less successful.   • 18. IMPROVEMENTS Hindsight is a wonderful thing, how might you have improved the overall project? Think about whether it matched your intentions, the creativity of the project, the technical aspects employed and how it compares to other video installation art works and/or artists. I think if I could go back and do it again I would spend more time on making the edit look slicker, while also adding in some extra clips too make it seem more exciting. In my original plan I planned to do some subliminal messaging, during my editing I decided not too do this, but looking back I think this would of added an extra depth to the installation, and I could also change the words of what the messages were saying. I also think the quality of the dinner lady scene seemed quite low and I would like to either refilm it or find a way too improve the quality. I do think that overall it reached my own intentions and fitted to the brief, I also think I could of looked at some more installation artists and taken more aspects of there work and put it into my own. As at the moment I only reference one artist. While I do think that compared to other installations mine did stand out and also was thought provoking, which makes me think this project was a success.   • 19. FUTURE ACTION In the future how might you learn from this project? Think about organisational aspects, creative and visual aspects, technical skills and any other elements you feel are appropriate. Produce a 5 point list for further development as a video producer. 1. do more pre production planning straight away and incorporate more initial artist research. And organise my preproduction so that it isn't all over the place 2.Learn to create smoother edits so that the video will look more professional. 3.Film more footage and shots too make the video have more too it, also this is where I could reference more artists. 4. Use more aspects of other video artist work to make the video have more creative depth, and to improve my grade. 5.Use more camera angles and moving shots so that the film is less linear. STAGE 3 Q3
