EVALUATION
 I feel as though I gathered some good research especially from
the BFI.
 It helped me to understand the demographics who most often
watch films and who might enjoy the film I had envisaged
making.
 I don’t know if it had a large impact on how my film turned
out. This was as I came up with varied ideas that appeal to
different age groups and found it hard to tailor my ideas to one
group.
 I think that my planning faze went well and allowed me to come up with
a plethora of ideas.
 I used a lot of time to come up with as many ideas as possible to really get
a good grasp on the task set. As well as helping me integrate ideas
together to make a more fully formed product.
 The planning faze had a massive impact on my film as it when I came up
with my core concept as well as how I planned to execute it.
 I also feel as though some of these ideas may be used in future projects,
helping me expand my knowledge and skill base.
 But even though I feel as though I came up with lots of ideas I feel as
though many of them were underdeveloped. This could mean I missed out
on the opportunity for a better film because I did not fully explore
avenues.
 I also feel as though I did not go far enough with my planning, this means
that I had some concepts that turned out hard to execute and some that I
had to leave out of my final project.
 I had a very limited time to film my project meaning I had a
lot of time restraints when filming. In an ideal world I would
have filmed over a few days reviewed the footage and then got
any more shots I felt necessary.
 But I tried to get plenty of shots and lots of back up shots. This
meant that I think I got a good shot out of the many takes that
I took. This was the biggest thing that I learnt, you can never
have too much footage.
Close-Up of
faces, with
similar
centre faces.
Both reaction
shots.
Both shots allow space to see the setting
Higher resolution,
better quality
camera.
Lighting better
designed to
suite tone, I
could
definitely use
this in my next
project.
• My piece has no diegetic audio and is unusual in that way. This
was to fit in with my films premise of a frozen world. It also adds
to the atmosphere of dread.
• It also helped hide the limitations of my equipment that often
picked up bad audio and so would have to been altered in post.
• The editing style is fairly simplistic in my piece. There are no unusual
transitions as this would not have fitted the tone of my film.
• I tried to make sure the editing kept a fast pace to my film whilst
increasing intrigue and tension. One way in which I did this was have the
longest shots at the start with more movement being included as the film
moved on.
• One effect I did include was cropping two shots to include an actor twice
in one frame. I learnt this technique earlier in the year in making and
advert. I feel as though it does not work to its best ability here. This is
due to an unstable shot causing it to be a notable divide between the
shots. I have tried to hide this with feathering of the shots as well as
where the divide is put and adjusting gamma.
• Another thing I had to do in post was add music. I made contact with
some people I know that do music films for them and they kindly donated
the track ‘the darkness surrounds us’. I lined this up with my clip and I
think it adds very nicely to the tone and ideas behind my film.
• I also added credits and titles, and I feel these look ok if not as
professional as I had hoped and I plan to learn how to better make these.
• As one of my first films I have made I maybe did not take enough risks
visually, but I feel as though my work does look good.
• I think that there are a couple of shots that are very visually pleasing. I
like my opening shot that starts off out of focus only to slowly focus in
on our protagonists face. Reflecting the world slowly coming into view
for our character waking into a changed, strange, world. Furthermore
the shot in which I track around the kitchen and frozen family works
really nicely and was a nice way to quickly convey my concept, as well
as a shot that took a long time to get right.
• Those are shots that add a bit of verity to my piece and are slightly
different to what can be dull stationary shots.
• Sometimes I feel as though the camera possibly lacks motion though
and some of the shots have no dynamism to them.
• The shots that really suffer from this is the close up reaction shots.
These are just filmed at a face level and do not close in on the character
or move out. And I feel as though these shots lack the creativity I want
to show in my piece.
• Overall though I'm happy with the look of my piece.
• I think the sci-fi concept may appeal to my audience, as well
as the tone of the film, which is taking itself seriously.
• As well as this the fast paced nature of a short film may
appeal to an audience of millennials, with shorter attention
spans.
• This however may work against me as I also have a fairly
slow start to the piece, which may put off some of my target
audience.
• Overall I think my audience would enjoy my film but I'm
not sure I did enough to specifically target them. And whilst
making the piece I should have thought more what does my
audience want to see, not what do I want to do.
