An Investigation Into Response For Disaster Using...
An Investigation into Response to Disaster Using Qualitative Methods
Abstract
This study investigated the accounts of individuals involved in the London underground bombings
in 2005. Throughout this investigation, thematic analysis was conducted on six eyewitness
accounts, highlighting their feelings and actions, which came about as a result of the incident.
From these accounts I obtained 4 key themes, which were consistent components of the six
accounts. Evidently, I found that the two most common themes were helping behaviour and the
panic myth. This was rather unexpected, as initially, I expected to find irrational and helpless
behaviour, due to the panic and stress of being trapped in a bombed underground. To conclude, the
investigation illuminated the concept of helping others before helping ones self. Thus,
contradicting the concept of survival of the fittest, as in this case the fittest were those who took it
upon themselves to assist other passengers in need. Therefore, highlighting the power of empathy
which was risen with experiencing the disaster.
Introduction
Terrorist attacks are a consistent global occurrence. The 2005 London undergroundbombings was an
attack which caused largest mass fatality occurrence in the UK since World War 2. As a result the
comfort and use of public transport in the UK was greatly impacted. Research into the fatalities and
physical repercussions of tragedies are amplified globally. For instance it is considered factual that

Rhodes Case Analysis
Chapter 6, Case 3 Rhodes Industries 1. Would the subsidiaries still be competitive and adaptive
in local markets if forced to coordinate with other subsidiaries around the world? RI is
considering using the globalization strategy to help increase their efficiencies and profits. They
have realized that they are using breakthrough technologies in some subsidiaries and not in
others. Since subsidiaries are basically run as completely different companies, they are refusing to
lower their profits to increase the overall profits of the company. In order to answer this question,
we need to look at the types of products RI sells. The list of products and services sold by RI

I think that the new integration can be achieved as long as the RI is willing to spend a lot
resources training the business managers and their subordinates. 3. Would it be a better idea to
appoint Product Director Coordinators as a first step, or jump to the Business Manager product
structure right away? Whenever a company decides to change the corporate structure, especially
internationally, I don t think it s a good idea to just jump right into the process. I think Mr. Javier is
very wise to think through all the potential problems before he pulls the trigger. The consultant RI
hired has a great idea of establishing a new international department at their headquarters. By doing
this, they can appoint a product director of each segment of their international businesses. The new
international department would have authority to coordinate the new activities and innovations,
and they would have a team to travel with them to each of the different regions. It s important that
the team be made of people who are familiar with business in those regions so that nothing is lost in
translation. It s also important for the Business Managers to trust the Product Directors are there for
their best interest so that the Business Manager does not try to

Franz Kafka Literary Analysis
When a society determines that a group of people is detrimental or dangerous, this designation
often comes from an underlying fear concerning that group of people. Social structures respond to
this fear by isolating, controlling, or destroying the group of people in question. Franz Kafka
juxtaposes Gregor s abnormal body with a conventional human environment to symbolize how
society s perceptions of an outcast changes over time.
Environmental factors which surround an individual accentuates his abnormal features, creating a
negative societal image. Such abnormal features can be acquired in a number of ways. In the case
of Gregor Samsa, he finds himself waking up in the body of a cockroach, while in an environment
which caters to the human body he had possessed. Literally overnight, basic tasks, become a
challenge to Gregor. In his abnormal body, getting out of bed became difficult... as he was so
exceptionally broad. (Kafka 9) Kafka displays how Gregor would ve normally had his arms and
his hands to push himself up; but instead of them he only had all those little legs continuously
moving in different directions... (Kafka 9) Extricating himself from a human environment
highlighted the shortcomings of his new cockroach body. This is shown again when attempting to
return to his room after seeking out the Chief Clerk. Gregor s large flat body provides resistance,
so he pushed himself into the doorway without regard for what might happen. One side of his body

Three Great Characteristics Of Canada
Social Studies Essay
Three Great Characteristics of Canada
Canada s countless characteristics undoubtedly makes it one of the most amazing countries in the
world. With three territories and ten provinces, our home and native land is home to over thirty five
million people from an endless amount of backgrounds and nationalities. Canada is widely seen as a
painfully polite country, a place with a terribly cold climate and meticulously clean cities. These
stereotypes might hold some truth, but realistically, our northern home is a place to be admired
because of its safety and freedom. Numerous people have taken this country for granted, but

Canada has massive mountains, freezing cold tundra, endless prairies, powerful oceans, even cold
and warm deserts. Not only do we have such diverse geographical places, but landscapes that are
quite well known in some other areas of the world. Two examples of this would be the excellent ski
and snowboard resorts nestled among the mountains in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and
Ontario, or the surfing beaches along the coast of British Columbia. Many people think that Canada
s climate is extremely cold all the time, but really that is only accurate in the northern part of
Canada where there is definitely colder weather. The southern area of Canada still encounters snow
and minus forty degrees in winter, but at shorter durations than in the north. On the other hand, in
the southern parts of our country we do face warmer temperatures. In the Western provinces such as
Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, we have had our share of what we would
call heat waves, with temperatures up to forty degrees celsius. In the very southern part of British
Columbia lies the Osoyoos desert which reaches high temperatures during summer months. The
Osoyoos desert is not the only desert in Canada though, the Arctic tundra is sometimes referred to
as a cold and harsh desert with permafrost and minimal plant and animal life. Although our

Thanksgiving Reflection Paper
In order to understand tradition one has to fully immerse themselves into a situation where tradition
is taking place. Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to explore what it means to celebrate, the
holiday is an American holiday only and is celebrated in a multitude of different ways with an
endless amount of traditional flare that changes from familyto family. I have many biases as to what
the Thanksgivingholiday looks like. Political rants, family members fighting over things from the
past, children running around creating chaos. I chose my family to observe because I wanted to
gain somewhat of an outsider perspective on what it was like to be around my family at the
holidays. Obviously I have been going to Thanksgiving with these same people my whole life
but I wanted to be able to look at the gathering in a different way and understand in a more
significant way why the way my family celebrates may be different from how I ve seen other
people s families celebrate.
As I step toward the house that I have known my entire life I find myself inspecting every inch of
the outer areas. The pile of crunchy, dull colored leaves that had been pushed to a corner as if not
to interfere with the delicately arranged garden that surrounded the lands perimeter just along the
sidewalk. The flowers in the surrounding garden have all died and are merely brown branches
standing tall and spiked awaiting the spring season. The entryway walls are consumed with long

discuss how
Mardi Gras originated, when it is celebrated, how it is celebrated, and what does it mean to all the
different cultures. Mardi Gras, in the French speaking parts of the world and in some US southern
states is the last day of carnival festivities preceding Lent, the time of penitence observed by
Christians in preparation for Easter. Mardi Gras ( Fat
Tuesday ) is a French term for Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent. Before Lent
festivities reach the climax on a day in February or March, depending on what date Easter
is.(Americana pg. 308) French colonists brought Mardi Gras to America in the early 1700 s. It ...

Carnival colors were chosen purple, green, and gold. At the city hall a throne like chair was

Describe the Basis of Feminist Criminology
The Basis Of Feminist Criminology Feminist criminology was created out of the realization that
criminology from its beginnings focused on the male criminal and the unlawful acts they
committed. When in the fact it could be argued female crime was studied as far back as 1800 s,
female criminal activity, its causes and the effects in which it placed on public opinion were often
disregarded. Over the past 20 years, there has been a significantly different approach in how females
are being dealt with inside the criminal justice system. This has been the result of a more
broadening law enforcement effort, stringent medication sentencing laws, and post conviction
limits to reentry that would greatly influence females. While there seems to... Show more content on

The response to the way women are dealt with, radical scholars agree that women turn to substance
abuse and criminal activity. Marxist women s activist conjecture bridges patriarchy into the
elements of free enterprise when female offenders are sentenced for property or sexual criminal
activity. Socialist feminism strives to create equal roles for women as, child bearers, servants, and
homemakers, so they can assume their licit place in society. Socialist feminism is a two part
theory on the basis that it increases the scope of Marxist s theories and the radical women s activist
theory .The extent of perception in women s activist criminology focuses on merging both society
and private sectors of a woman s livelihood and an end to the financial and the social continual
pattern of a woman s abuse.
2. Do you believe that this philosophy explains the cause of criminal behavior in women? I believe
that this train of thought addresses the cause of criminal behavior in women because many
viewpoints that fall under the umbrella of feminism are given as different causes of criminal
conduct in women .Feminist criminology lacks evidence of a woman s crime. Women s activist
theories not only strive to elucidate criminal wrong doing, exploitation and additionally join
together theory with practice to create more impartial answers for the crime at hand.

expectation of being suspenseful but besides that it was completely different in a great way. I
believe this movie was a great example of what families go through in situation like that of one
in The Lovely Bones. The movie The Lovely Bones is about the murder of a young 14 year old
girl named Susie Salmon. She is stuck somewhere in between the real world and heaven trying to
find out who her murderer was. In the movie they repeatedly stated that the murderer had to be
someone very close to her. To the audience it was very obvious who the murder was but the family
had no idea. Throughout her young life Susie loved to take pictures of just about anything. During
the movie this interest of hers helped not just her but her family realize the truth. As the movie
goes on she slowly starts to give up and decides to accept the fact that she is in fact dead. Her
family is completely devastated and Susie s death causes great complications between the

Similarities Between Lord Of Flies And Lord Of The Flies
Living a life without any adults giving orders or making rules, not having to listen to them tell
everyone what to do or not to do sounds pretty marvelous. Many kids dream of living their own life
without their parents or other adults telling them what to do, however, oftentimes, we see their plan
backfire on themselves and they end up running to the parents, not knowing what to do. In the novel
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there is a plane crash, involving a group of boys not
much older than 12 years old. The plane crash takes place during World War II and the plane
crashes onto an island, stranding the boys by themselves, without any information or adults. In the
film adaptation of the novel The Mist by Stephen King, there is a mist that covers the town of
Bridgton, trapping a group of adults in a grocery store. The mist, what many people consider an
apocalypse, takes place during present times, in the state of Maine. [The novel The Lord of the
Flies and the movie The Mist both portray human nature as essentially evil and savage, all the
same loyalty plays a key part in influencing the decisions and actions of the characters of each
story leading to some sections of resemblance and some sections of discrepancies. Both passive and
active, religionplays a role in both stories, however while the same religious concept is in each
story, there are many contrast between the novel and the film adaptation.] The most advanced stage

Role Of Pharmacy In Pharmacy
Pharmacy as a profession plays a very important part in the overall wellbeing of a patient. This is
an occupation that deals with the administration and pharmacology of medications. A pharmacist
is part of the team that ensures that a patient is nursed to full health, thereby improving the
quality of life. I was twelve years old when I decided that whatever occupation I end up doing, I
will be positively impacting the health of people. I made this decision one summer after school
just let out when I got inflicted with typhoid. I was very upset not just because of the severe
pain, but also because I couldn t go out and play since the illness didn t seem to be dissipating
even after a few days. It is common practice in Nigeria for people to self medicate with drugs like
Paracetamol and Panadol. This is because hospital bills are very expensive and treatment doesn t
begin until payment is made. Therefore, my mom administered these painkillers to me for the
first couple of days although my condition continued to worsen. Finally, we went to the hospital
where I was diagnosed with typhoid and directed to a pharmacist. A few days after taking the
medications given to me by the pharmacist, I started feeling better. This just goes to show that a
doctor s job is incomplete without a pharmacist. There have also been other instances where I
have marveled at the wonder that is medicine. For example, when my mom got diagnosed with

Parkinson s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms or tremors,
rigidity, (bradykinesia) or slowness of movement and posture instability. Parkinson s involves the
malfunction and death of vital nerve cells in the brain. This disease primarily affects neurons in
area of the brain called substantia nigra. Some of these dying neurons produce dopamine a chemical
that sends messages to the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination. The
symptoms of Parkinson s disease usually begin on one side of the body and within time spread
to both sides of the body. The primary process that causes Parkinson s disease signs and
symptoms is when dopamine producing nerve cells in the brain die prematurely. Dopamine is one
of the main neurotransmitters in the brain. In a healthy brain, ample dopamine is produced so that
the brain cells can coordinate smooth and precise muscle movements. However, when dopamine
cells are lost, brain cells communicate abnormally with muscles, which can lead to impaired body
movement. (Null, 2013, pp. 153 176) When Parkinson s disease progresses there is a gradual loss
of many functions that depend on muscle control such as the ability to write legibly, or speak

Entitlement And Provision For Early Years Education
Unit 4.
Assessment Criteria 4.1.1.
Summarise entitlement and provision for early years education.
There are many different entitlements and provisions established for early years education.
Nursery schools, pre schools, and playgroups all provide learning and play activities, family
support, early intervention and childcare for all children under the age of five years old.
Nursery schools are predominantly attached to a Surestart centre, which work with children and
parents providing education for both, full day care provision, parenting advice, and health and
family support, or to a primary school. Where as pre schools and playgroups are normally privately
owned and operated, offering childcare, play and education activities.
Since 2004 all children in the UK aged 3 and 4 years old have been entitled to free places at
nurseries and pre school and even under the care of a childminder for up to 12.5 hours per week,
this provision was increased to 15 hours per week from 2010.Day nurseries also offer the same
provisions for early years education, but are usually run within a business, or by a voluntary group.
Free entitlement and provision provides universal access for all to early years education, play
activities, and childcare, which are all extremely beneficial to children and their short and long term
educational, social, and behavioural development.

Private Equity Investment
Private Equity (PE) investment is an asset class that is bought and sold in a privately negotiated
transaction and is not publicly traded on a stock exchange. This investment is normally completed
by private equity firm, venture capital firm, or an informal investor named business angel. They
raise funds and invest it on behalf of their investors. There are four most well known investment
strategies, i.e. venture capital(VC), leveraged buy out (LBO), mezzanine debt and distressed debt
investments. It is distinguishable that VC usually targets the start up firms while LBO purchases
majority control in a developed and mature firm. The total global PE assets under management
(AUM) in 2013 has climbed up to $3,466 billion, the highest value to date and has remained a
steadily growth throughout the past 6 years after financial crisis (Appendix figure 1). This is
partially attributed to a sharp decline of exit activity resulted from crisis, led to more capital calls,
improved fundraising and thus expansion of AUM.
Between 1990 and 2008, capital committed in PE were growing at 20% compounding rate
annually, with some acquired firms have become popular due to the popularity of PE, such as
Domino s Pizza and Toys R . However, following the financial crisis in 2008, the private equity
industry has been confronting momentous challenges yet continuous to recover with signs of
performance rebounding. It has been proved to outperform the public market over the long term.

The Effects Of Drought On Human Consumption
Throughout the past century many areas of the Western United States have faced agricultural
concerns, many environmental hazards, and economical stressors stemming from severe drought.
According to livescience.com, a drought can be described as a period of unusually dry weather that
persists long enough to cause environmental or economic problems. (Oskin, 2014) Droughts are
natural occurrences that have been happening for hundreds of years, and although their effects
haven t been documented that long, scientists have been able to identify their impacts by using
various research methods. Droughts are fairly complex issues that can have many impacts on
humans as well as be influenced by human interactions with the environment. Negative impacts are
being felt currently in the Western US and are not showing signs of slowing up. Droughtis highly
dependent on human consumption of water be it for agricultural, industrial, or household uses.
There are many issues regarding human consumption of water, but one of the most notable is the
fact that we have very little fresh water available that can be accessed and used by humans.
According to the USGS, about 71% of the Earth s surface is water covered, and the oceans hold
about 96.5% of all Earth s water (Perlman, 2014). This is a pretty humbling statistic, and brings to
light how easily water can become scarce. With less than 3% of the Earth s water being readily
available for consumption, humans do not have much room for waste.

Women s Anger Research Paper
Life is like balancing a scale, and every shift in life is a function of the display or the
demonstration of power. Power is a force that governs everything in life, and out of the many
forms of power, anger is one form often dismissed. Anger is a type of power generated from the
feeling of inequality aimed at balancing out an uneven scale the victim feels. For a long time in
history, women have been unequally treated, discriminated against, and subdued in spite of their
attempt to change the genderinequality they experience. Their actions are being characterized as
having temper tantrums, excessive rage and often times, mental instability. The angerin women,

women are not considered valid people, which thereby fails to convey their power. Without the

In the book Ordinary People by Judith Guest the person I relate with most is going to be Conrad
Jarrett. Conrad is the son of Calvin and Beth. In the story Conrad was in a boating accident with
his brother which caused his brother s death and Conrad blamed himself for his death. Then
Conrad a year later tried to commit suicide and it forced him to have to spend time in a hospital
to get better. When Conrad gets out he still feels little purpose in life and no motivation. He
starts to see Dr. Berger to help him recover from everything he has been through. My relation
with his problems isn t exactly the same but I can relate in a way. My stepdad had a car accident
and the car accident caused his death. Me and my familywere devastated when we found out. It can

In chapter 13 Conrad gets into an argument with his mother. Beth hears from Lazenby s mother
that Conrad quit the swim team. Beth is mad because he quit and didn t tell them about it. Conrad
says that he just spends his time at the library, Conrad is getting angry and says that he would have
told them if he thought they cared. Then Conrad ends up telling Beth to go to hell. I can relate to
Conrad in this chapter because of him getting in arguments with his parents because I seem to do it

The Theory Of Self Defense
Self defense is described in the dictionary as; the act of defending one s person when physically
attacked, as by countering blows or overcoming an assailant ( self defense, n.d.). The concept of
self defense appears well defined; however, the tactics allowed to protect oneself have evolved just
as America has. As technology and weaponry advance, the need for clearer laws pertaining to the
actions allowed by an individualneed to be reevaluated and clearly communicated. Starting in early
colonial times and moving through history, there is a great deal of differences between the self
defense that was once permitted and what is acceptable and tolerated today.
In early colonial times, Europeans began settling in America. During this time, there was a need
for self defense from both the Native Americans who were already settled on the new land and
from the European invaders who wanted to take it over. Self defense was originally termed the
first law of nature, and citizens were allowed to use deadly force whenever they judged it
necessary. This practice of self defense existed during a time where the individual was considered
the ... judge, jury, and executioner (Cornell, 2013). While being attacked, an individual was
allowed to determine the course of action he or she could take to protect himself or herself
whether it be retreating or killing the perpetrator. During this time, items such as one s own hands,
bow and arrows, knives, and weapons of that sort were used

Effectiveness Of The CLAS Literature Review
According to Guerrero (2012), in the past, there were federal and state campaigns that attempted to
get mental health agencies to provide cultural competence in the delivery of their services.
However, it was not until recently that initiatives have been made that require mental health
organizations to provide evidence of the use of cultural competence in their services. Guerrero also
states that the regulation of cultural competence standards was thought to have been poorly
monitored prior to the 1990s, and that the regulation of CLAS standards did not begin until the
1990s. For example, the Joint Commission now requires the use of the CLAS standards in order to
get professional accreditation (Guerrero, 2012). Also, educational institutions use CLAS standards
to help with professional training in working with diverse populations. Professional associations,
such as the American Psychological Association, have regulations that require cultural competence
standards be practiced by many of the graduate programs. In addition, Title VI of the Civil Rights
Act mandates that healthcare and mental health care organizations who receive... Show more

Holden Caulfield is Lost in The Catcher in the Rye Essay
In the novel The Catcher in the Rye, the leading character, Holden Caulfield, emerges as an
adolescence lost in his own private world of pain and suffering, yet ostensibly he was able to
provide himself with all the luxuries and splendors of American society. Holden is presented as a
failure who struggles to stay in at least one of the four schools he s been kicked out of. This can
reflect that Holden can t manage to get by in life. Throughout the book, it is obvious that Holden is
running from so many things such as growing up, reality and people who are phonies. It seems that
Holden is confused and trapped in memories from moments past, that he is dealing with loneliness
and isolates himself as a form of protection. Not only that but he... Show more content on

Holden seems to be lonely and this can reflect back to Allie s death. He doesn t really have
anyone to catch him from falling into the ravine, off the rye field the way he would catch the
kids. He doesn t have anyone to motivate him to succeed. The reader is taken back and forth
between Holden s remembering and re living the traumatic pain of his past with his family and
the complete disconnect he has experienced. Allie s death changed all of Holden s family as well
as himself. It s almost as if when Allie died, the household died. When Holden broke the
windows in the garage, on the night Allie died, he said, My hand still hurts me once in a while
when it rains and all, and I can t make a real fist... I mean I m not going to be a goddam surgeon
or violinist or anything anyway (Salinger 39). This disconnect Holden is experiencing between
him and his parents is causing him to lose motivation to succeed in school and in life. According
to Freud, it s Holden s unconscious state of mind that drives his defense mechanism to seclude
himself from his parents and actually other adults as well. Much like J.D. Salinger. Salinger lived

From the Forum you can still clearly see the remains of the lower floor of the Tabularium, now

The Middle Ages
During the exile of the popes in Avignon Rome became depopulated and the Capitoline Hill was
even used as a goat pasture, which gave it the name Monte Caprino (goat mountain). By the
sixteenth century the Renaissance brought a revival of Rome s grandeur and with it a complete
redesign of its heart, the Capitoline Hill. In 1536 Michelangelo drew up plans for a new square

Assess the significance of individual cases in changing...
Since the 19th century, law enforcement and punishment has developed rapidly into the justice
system we rely on today. Obscure laws that had become irrelevant in an industrial and post
industrial era were fast being replaced, and despite its lack of existence at the beginning of the
1800 s, policing standards are, today, high. The necessity for this drastic change in approach to
crimehas stemmed from the needs of industrial Britain, and the increased awareness of the public,
and government, and their perception of crime and punishment. Rather than individual cases having
a direct impact on these changes, in general they provide an insight as to the reactions of the public

The Tolpuddle Martyrs are a significant case in showing the increased involvement of the public in
speaking against the justice system. In 1834, members of the Friendly Society of Agricultural
Labourers were transported under an outdated law that prohibited the taking of oaths, when they
protested for a better wage. Perhaps what brought the most sympathy for the case was the fact that
their protest was peaceful, despite the history of violent protest among workers with riots and
groups such as the Luddites. The authorities were equally unsympathetic to this case as they were
to the other, more violent movements. Even after public interest attracted an 800,000 signature
petition, protesters were oppressed at a demonstration in Oldham. The public was aware of the
struggles of the poor worker, but the government still dismissed it; refusing to recognise the
desperate circumstance of workers and citing greed as the motive of the Martyrs. Clearly the case
had little impact on government opinions, with the treatment of the Chartists and the Rebecca
Rioters later in the same decade being the same. But an important contribution of the Tolpuddle
Martyrs case was the impact it had on public opinion, and the increased popularity of worker s
unions. This case might suggest that reform is unrelated to the attitudes of society at

From the most liberal democracy to the most crushing dictatorship, governments have all faced

Another dominant example of irony is the Party s slogan: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS
SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH (Orwell 17). The slogan is an example of superficial
verbal irony. However, upon closer examination, it sheds more light on Orwell s intent. By
stating that war is peace , Orwell sends distinct messages to two vastly different groups. To the
proles, the commoners, war is peace can be read at its most literal meaning, that there can one day
be peace by defeating the enemy and securing victory. Despite the simple understanding the proles
have of the slogan, those in the Inner Party, the group of people in charge of Oceania, have a much
more devious understanding of it. To them, the slogan represents the shell game that they play with
the common citizen. Much like the street gambler taking bets on which shell the rock is under, the
Inner Party assures that the citizenry is focused on whatever country Oceania is fighting, rather
than on the leaders of the country. This claim is further supported on page 161 where Orwell
describes the futility of the wars that are being fought. None of the three superstates ever attempts
any maneuver which involves the risk of serious defeat (Orwell 161). Rather than try to end the
wars, they continue fighting to keep the minds of the working class occupied with hate. The
leaders in 1984 saw that it was not advantageous to advocate a strict moral

geological evidence. Geologists have been investigating how ancient geological phenomenon are
able to shed light on the origins of many myths. Scientist have even uncovered evidence that may
serve as the inspiration for biblical stories. Many are hoping that understanding these myths and the
geological phenomenon they depict will reveal important information about natural disasters like:

in Krajick 763). These myths have led scientist to believe that the explosion is reoccurring. The
Genesis flood store describes a large scale flood that covers all of the mountains and rids the
world of man and his wicked flesh. It has been argued that the rising sea level of the
Mediterranean, which followed the last deglaciation covered what is now the Bosporus Strait
and flowed into the Black Sea around 7,600 years ago. It is thought that this massive flood
served as the inspiration for the great flood described in The Book of Genesis. While this
evidence is not conclusive it adds a new perspective on flood stories. Atrahasis is a creation and
flood story that is much older but it is now reasonable to wonder if this too was not based on an
actual flood. Currently, there is no evidence directly linking the myth to actual flooding. However,
it was common for the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to flood during the time of this myths creation. It
is hoped that by understanding the patterns of these catastrophic environmental events. That lives

Profile Based Personalized Web Search
We suggest a Profile based personalized web search framework UPS (User customizable Privacy

generated. For hierarchical user pro file we trust two conflicting metrics, namely personalization
utility and privacy risk, with its NP hardness proved we formulate the problem of Profile based
personalized search as Risk Profile Generalization.
With the help of two greedy algorithms, namely GreedyIL and GreedyDP, we generate the expected
search result, greedy algorithms support runtime profiling. While the former tries to maximize the
discriminating power (DP), the latter attempts to minimize the in formation loss (IL). By exploiting
a number of heuristics, GreedyIL outperforms GreedyDP significantly.
For the client to decide whether to personalize a query in UPS we provide an inexpensive
mechanism. Before each runtime profiling this decision can be made to improve the stability of the
search results while avoid the needless exposure of the profile.

Tax Reformation Common Ground
The tax policy in the United States is very confusing. When the tax policy was originally written
in 1913 it was four hundred pages. Now, over the past ninety one years, that tax policy has
evolved to over 72,000 pages. Since the tax code has become so lengthy and nearly impossible to
understand, the topic of taxreform has been in the minds of many. Although, most barely think
about tax reform until tax season. It is a controversial subject due to the impact a change in tax
code would have on the American people. The two most popular and widely known stakeholders in
this debate are the two major political parties in the United States, the Democrats and the
Republicans. The two parties share absolutely no common ground on the subject of... Show more

For example, if the tax rate is seven percent and one person makes one thousand dollars they would
pay seventy dollars to the government. While someone that only made one hundred dollars would
pay seven dollars to the government; this they may deem unfair.
The common ground the two parties would meet on would be a flat tax. So, any household that
is classified as on or below the poverty line will not be taxed whatsoever. Then the tax amount
for everyone else would be chosen based off of the governments projected spending amount for
that year, and incorporating the idea of reducing the deficit. It would take a lot of work to get
implemented, not only would the idea have to be adopted by both parties, it would have to be
supported by two of the three branches of government. The bill would begin in the House of
Representatives, after being passed there it would move to a vote with the Senate. If the bill
continues to be passed it will move to the executive branch where it can either be signed of
vetoed by the president, although a veto can be overridden with a two thirds vote from Congress.
Once it is passed the existing tax code would have to be completely thrown out and the flat tax
implemented. But this is not simply a month long process, the timeline for a flat tax to be
implemented would likely be about four years. It is a lengthy process, but one that is well worth
the wait.
While only economists can predict how a flat tax would impact

Analysis Of Robert Flaherty s Famous Work Nanook Of The...
The challenge of accurately representing ethnography, the critical analysis and systematic
inspection of everyday life across cultures, has been repeatedly attempted with myriad intentions
and has subsequently evolved over time. This paper will examine four iconic anthropological
filmmakers in the mid twentieth century in their individual distinctive endeavors to contribute to
and accomplish this goal of developing ethnographic film. From Robert Flaherty s objective to
showcase cultureas art, to Margaret Mead and Gregory Batesons intent to produce a purely
unbiased and scientific cinematic record, to John Marshall s desire to present works which would
engage audiences politically, one can trace the evolving narrative of ethnographic film itself,
climaxing in the ultimate quest for reflexivity. Robert Flaherty s famous work Nanook of the
North (1922) artistically depicts the life of Nanook, a fictional Inuk man in the Arctic. Throughout
what became known as the pioneering documentary of its field, the film follows Nanook s family
in their day to day tasks. With no dialogue, a dramatic score ever presently serves as narration
throughout the staged scenes of trading, hunting, and building igloos. While the film was well
received for invigorating audiences, many critiqued Flaherty s anti attempt to accurately represent
the native culture of his film s characters (Fisher, 8 September). This begs the question of how a
film can remain critical without trivializing, to be

In fact, an expert from the L.A. Sheriff s Department who testified at the Sleepy Lagoon trial is
quoted as saying:
Let us view it from the biological basis. . . Total disregard for human life has always been
universal throughout the Americas in the human population. And this Mexican element feels a
desire to kill or at least to draw blood (Tobar, 1997). On top of the racism faced in the courtroom
was the media bias against the Mexican American population. In the process of covering events in
the city, the then Hearst owned papers did a series of articles on the pachuco gangs, depicting
Mexican American neighborhoods as being fraught with violence, places of raping and
pillaging (Tobar, 1997). This was the atmosphere of the city at the time of the Sleepy Lagoon
murder in 1942, when the body of Jose Diaz was found at a common swimming hole after a
party. Because of the public outrage over pachuco gangs, which was instigated by the media, the
sheriff s department went on a sweep of the city s barrios, rounding up and arresting over 600
young men in connection to the Sleepy Lagoon case. Eventually 24 men were indicted for murder,
and 12 were convicted (Tobar, 1997). During the trial in early 1943, the defendants were forced to

Comparing Fortune In Hamlet And The Prince
Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, is a play about a prince who needs to get revenge for the
murder of his father. The Prince, written by NiccolГІ Machiavelli, is a treatise on how to take and
hold on to political power. Both Hamlet and The Prince contain the concept of fortune as a common
theme throughout each work. Fortune is talked about in similar ways in both, including how
fortune is a woman, how much control fortune has over people, and how fortune is like water.
Fortune is associated with the goddess Fortuna from Roman mythology in both Hamletand The
Prince. Fortuna is the Roman goddess of luck, fate, and fortune. Fortuna is referred to in a sexual

Again, Fortune is called a strumpet, as First Player pleads with all the other gods to destroy her

in The Prince:
My opinion on the matter is this: it s better to be impulsive than cautious; fortune is female and if
you want to stay on top of her you have to slap and thrust. (Machiavelli 136 137)
Machiavelli is using sex as a metaphor to say that to subdue Fortune, one must be impulsive and
assert their dominance over her. Hamlet believes he leaves too much up to fortune because he
thinks too much without taking enough action. In his to be or not to be soliloquy, he reflects on
how he overthinks things, saying conscience does make cowards of us all . Hamlet wishes he

After Midnight makes you feel as if you were living in Harlem during the 30s.

The by gone era of 1920s and 30s, jam packed with illicit alcohol, street cars and loud noises, are
often remembered as a time when music was more important than content. If that is true, then After
Midnight is definitely a product of its time.
After midnight is an effervescent new Lincoln center jazz venue performed at the Brooks Atkinson

In a present day twist, everything about the plot and the characters has been recycled from the old
days. The performers are energetic and smiling all through the play and there are many things that
bring a smile to even the weariest faces, such as balloons, trumpets, tap dancers and a bit of
romantic comedy; it all creates stage magic. Another key component that adds a lot of character to
this modern spin of the Harlem Renaissance is the exceptional costumes by a Cuban designer,
Isabel Toledo; she found enough sparkle, feathers and beads to dress a flapper army.
Although the true stars of this play are the performers from the Jazz at Lincoln Center All stars,
it s clear that the stage gets caught on fire when Fantasia Barrino performed I Can t Give You

Asian Stereotypes In America
Beginning with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first law to ever restrict immigration,
discrimination against Asian Americans has been prevalent in the United States. Although the issue

The typical stereotyping of Asians as exemplar intellectuals with natural skills in the fields of
math, technology, and science are many times, true, as the masses have portrayed themselves as
achievers of the American Dream ( Model Minority Stereotype ). Asians, on average, are more
educated and intellectual than any other racial group (Wingfield). As they are more likely to have
white collar jobs and even considered overrepresented in professional workplaces in the United
States, it is not surprising that Asians earn higher incomes than the average white individual
(Wingfield). Thus, it is feasible that Asians serve as a model minority for other minorities and
maybe even the majority, as many strive to have the same opportunities as them. Moreover, in the
film Get Out, African Americans are portrayed as the main minority; the protagonist, Chris, is the
only black person in a white suburban town (Truffaut Wong). However, in two scenes, an Asian
man named Hiroki Tanaka participates in the modern slave auction and ultimately accomplishes his
role as the model minority (Truffaut Wong). The man blends in with the white crowd and enforces
the concept of the model minority, as he is seen to be on the ranks of white people. Furthermore, by
definition, the model minority is not offensive as its denotation is meant to praise the group. Asians
are seen to thrive economically and their responsibility, motivation, and the success as a result are
proof that American meritocracy is effective (Wingfield). Fundamentally, Americans recognize the
dedication and diligence Asians have and thus acclaim Asians to be models for the rest of the
population. Overall, the stereotyping of Asians as a group of hard working, determined individuals

between two parties. Those steps are known as Negotiation, Mediation, Conciliation and
Arbitration. Most of these steps require a third party who helps in offering advice or examining
the dispute within the workplace or making an agreement for two parties to agree on. There are
some disadvantages in the process of these steps and they can end up in a failure to resolve the
dispute and if that happens, then the two parties move onto the next step.

Emergency Department Overcrowding
Today, overcrowding affects the viability of emergency departments across this county (Derlet,

Organizations (JCAHO), over one half of all sentinel event cases of morbidity and mortality
resulting from delays in treatment occur in hospitalemergency departments. Emergency department

Several surveys among health practitioners and nurses have revealed satisfactory usage results. The
respondents stated the system was simple to use, reduced the subjectivity of the triage decision and
was more accurate than other triage systems (Singer, Infante, Oppenheimer, West Siegel, 2012).
The rapid identification of patients that need immediate attention is one of the benefits of the
emergency severity index. The system focuses on the fast and accurate sorting of patients in cases
where there is shortage of adequate resources for treatment of emergency patients. The emergency
severity index (ESI) uses a five level categorization process that is used to rapidly sort emergency
patients into five groups that are based on clinically meaningful differences and projected resource
needs available. Another positive outcome of the emergency severity index is the improved flow of
patients through the emergency department as patients categorized as level one and two can be
immediately taken to the treatment area for rapid evaluation and treatment. Patients determined by
the triage nurse to be lower acuity can safely wait to be attended to after the higher acuity level
patients are cared for. There are other benefits of the system that include determination of the

A Research Report On Dual Career Couples Essay
Six primary source research reports were examined for this Review of Literature and it became
evident that there were two common themes. These two common themes were shown to negatively
affect dual career couples in five out of the six primary source research reports that the student has
studied over a period of time. Theme one is occupational issues that lead to dual career marital
conflict. Theme two is support/psychological issues that lead to marital conflict.
Theme 1
The first common theme that the student has found is the occupational issues that lead to conflict
in dual career marriages. One of the major issues that the student had to consider during this process
was occupational similarities and differences. In the research from Reed and Reed, Werbel and
Hames, and Rochlen and O Brien studied the negative effects that an occupation can have on a
marriage when both spouses work in the same company. Researchers Reed and Reed study
occupational mobility; researchers want to find how dual career couples who work within the
same governmental position will react to relocations. While researchers Werbel and Hames
examined the attitudes and views that supervisors and employees have on dual career couples who
work in the same company. Finally, researchers Rochlen and O Brien study the occupational
problems that men have and why they will or will not seek career advice; they evaluate how this
can cause conflict within a marriage.

Prohibition And The Prohibition Movement
Introduction
Prohibition in the United States was an extent intended to decrease drinking by removing the
businesses that produced, dispersed, and retailed alcoholic beverages. The 18 Amendment made an
approval to the United States Constitution that bared the production, transference and trade of
hallucinogenic liquors. Conversely, this piloted a historical Crusades recognized as the Prohibition
movement (Asbury, 1950). At that time the well known temperance movementwas demanding and
had little or no affect even though the legislation was behind them. This was during the 20th
century when they were recognized as the Volstead Act. Unfortunately, this sparked the illegal surge
and fabrication of the distribution of liquor (referred as bootlegging), which created alternative
areas the initiated gang fierceness and numerous crime activity that conquering of the Prohibition
movement that terminated at the end of the 20 s (Levinthal, 2016). Unfortunately, the United States
realized that the prohibition was very draining and costly and looked for other substitutions and
approaches. Eventually, the nation surge of alcohol prohibition changed to local procedures of
regulation.
Prohibition
At the end of the 1700 s the protuberant doctors, authors, and scientist started to contemplate the
opposing effects of alcohol drinking and pursued to frame some kind of social reform to alleviate

Since the average person could not take themselves as an object, they had to rely on that Other
who does have himself as object (the sovereign) to tell them who they are, and what their
relationship is to him, since he is capable of knowing both at once, and thus of comparing. The
Classical age saw an increased interest by the ruling classes, and the emerging intellectual
class,2[2] in the affairs of the productive classes. The realisation of the significance of
microphysical power is parallelled by the establishment of the subject as the final authority on
belief (Luther), the foundation of knowledge (Descartes), and the establisher of rights (Locke).
These ideas gave power to masses who had hitherto seen themselves as having none (hardly having
seen themselves at all), and fuelled the Age of Revolutions. The Classical discovery of the
individual led, by the Romantic period, to its exaltation. The belief in individual power and rights
created a demand not only for access to the privileges previously enjoyed only by the elite (such as
say in the direction of society), but also for comparable narrative distinctiveness.
As the romantics idealised the life of peasants, and socialists proclaimed the rights of workers,
common folk began to see their images in culture. Individual enshrinement remained the

Project Quality Project quality is concerned with two ultimate goals i.e. efficiency of processes
employed in the implementation of the project and ensuring the quality of the end product, So that
the product is fit for use and covers all the needs of user and its cost effectiveness. PMBOK
recommends suggests employing quality planning, assurance and control for quality
implementation of the project. In simple terms it is necessary to produce a quality product that the
projects are being run with quality. That is why experts of the fields believe that quality of project
guarantees the quality of end product (WindmГјller, 2013). Agile Quality Control and Assurance
Quality control is the method of implementing the plans which are planned via quality assurance to
demonstrate quality in a product. In a traditional PM, managers would produce a quality plan first.
While on the other hand Agile manager are not bound to make such plans as the Agile process itself
guarantees the quality control and assurance. Agile creates a quality product by using a
combination of a couple of practices i.e. Agile Project Execution and Agile Project Monitoring and
Control (Duncan, PEERCY,2012). Customer Is A Team Member Agile team tries to build a product
that meets the customer s intent rather than the detailed description provided in the traditional
methods, thus in the Agile PM customer becomes one of the team guide and member.

Examples Of Metaphors In The White Tiger
Research Question: How does Aravind Adiga use metaphors in The White Tiger to highlight the
contrast between the different sections of Indian society?
Introduction:
Typically, we identify metaphors to be the figure of speech that draws an indirect comparison to
bring out an enhanced rhetoric effect. However, metaphors are so strongly ingrained in our
language, that all of us think, write, and even speak in metaphors every day. Ironically, the word
metaphor itself is a metaphor, as metaphor stems from a Greek word that means transfer or carry
across . In the literal sense, metaphors transfer meaning from one idea to another, typically
associating it with a word.

primarily because of their personality which aligns sublimely with the nature stereotypically
associated with these animals.
The overall metaphor of the White Tiger represents what it is like to break out of the never

he is the White Tiger , he possesses the required skills to break out of the Rooster Coop and find
order unlike the other inhabitants of the darkness.
Throughout the novel, Arvind Adiga uses a plethora of metaphors to describe the happenings of
Balram Halwai, and his activities. In addition to this, the author repeatedly uses ironic, and sarcastic
phrases to condemn the upper class Indian society, or citizens from the light . This brings out
several key themes in the novel, including

  • 2. An Investigation Into Response For Disaster Using... An Investigation into Response to Disaster Using Qualitative Methods Abstract This study investigated the accounts of individuals involved in the London underground bombings in 2005. Throughout this investigation, thematic analysis was conducted on six eyewitness accounts, highlighting their feelings and actions, which came about as a result of the incident. From these accounts I obtained 4 key themes, which were consistent components of the six accounts. Evidently, I found that the two most common themes were helping behaviour and the panic myth. This was rather unexpected, as initially, I expected to find irrational and helpless behaviour, due to the panic and stress of being trapped in a bombed underground. To conclude, the investigation illuminated the concept of helping others before helping ones self. Thus, contradicting the concept of survival of the fittest, as in this case the fittest were those who took it upon themselves to assist other passengers in need. Therefore, highlighting the power of empathy which was risen with experiencing the disaster. Introduction Terrorist attacks are a consistent global occurrence. The 2005 London undergroundbombings was an attack which caused largest mass fatality occurrence in the UK since World War 2. As a result the comfort and use of public transport in the UK was greatly impacted. Research into the fatalities and physical repercussions of tragedies are amplified globally. For instance it is considered factual that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Rhodes Case Analysis Chapter 6, Case 3 Rhodes Industries 1. Would the subsidiaries still be competitive and adaptive in local markets if forced to coordinate with other subsidiaries around the world? RI is considering using the globalization strategy to help increase their efficiencies and profits. They have realized that they are using breakthrough technologies in some subsidiaries and not in others. Since subsidiaries are basically run as completely different companies, they are refusing to lower their profits to increase the overall profits of the company. In order to answer this question, we need to look at the types of products RI sells. The list of products and services sold by RI include pipe, glass, sealants, coatings, cleaning equipment,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think that the new integration can be achieved as long as the RI is willing to spend a lot resources training the business managers and their subordinates. 3. Would it be a better idea to appoint Product Director Coordinators as a first step, or jump to the Business Manager product structure right away? Whenever a company decides to change the corporate structure, especially internationally, I don t think it s a good idea to just jump right into the process. I think Mr. Javier is very wise to think through all the potential problems before he pulls the trigger. The consultant RI hired has a great idea of establishing a new international department at their headquarters. By doing this, they can appoint a product director of each segment of their international businesses. The new international department would have authority to coordinate the new activities and innovations, and they would have a team to travel with them to each of the different regions. It s important that the team be made of people who are familiar with business in those regions so that nothing is lost in translation. It s also important for the Business Managers to trust the Product Directors are there for their best interest so that the Business Manager does not try to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Franz Kafka Literary Analysis When a society determines that a group of people is detrimental or dangerous, this designation often comes from an underlying fear concerning that group of people. Social structures respond to this fear by isolating, controlling, or destroying the group of people in question. Franz Kafka juxtaposes Gregor s abnormal body with a conventional human environment to symbolize how society s perceptions of an outcast changes over time. Environmental factors which surround an individual accentuates his abnormal features, creating a negative societal image. Such abnormal features can be acquired in a number of ways. In the case of Gregor Samsa, he finds himself waking up in the body of a cockroach, while in an environment which caters to the human body he had possessed. Literally overnight, basic tasks, become a challenge to Gregor. In his abnormal body, getting out of bed became difficult... as he was so exceptionally broad. (Kafka 9) Kafka displays how Gregor would ve normally had his arms and his hands to push himself up; but instead of them he only had all those little legs continuously moving in different directions... (Kafka 9) Extricating himself from a human environment highlighted the shortcomings of his new cockroach body. This is shown again when attempting to return to his room after seeking out the Chief Clerk. Gregor s large flat body provides resistance, so he pushed himself into the doorway without regard for what might happen. One side of his body ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Three Great Characteristics Of Canada Social Studies Essay Three Great Characteristics of Canada Canada s countless characteristics undoubtedly makes it one of the most amazing countries in the world. With three territories and ten provinces, our home and native land is home to over thirty five million people from an endless amount of backgrounds and nationalities. Canada is widely seen as a painfully polite country, a place with a terribly cold climate and meticulously clean cities. These stereotypes might hold some truth, but realistically, our northern home is a place to be admired because of its safety and freedom. Numerous people have taken this country for granted, but realizing how fortunate we all are to live in an environment such as Canada s, is a privilege and an ... Not only do we have such diverse geographical places, but landscapes that are quite well known in some other areas of the world. Two examples of this would be the excellent ski and snowboard resorts nestled among the mountains in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Ontario, or the surfing beaches along the coast of British Columbia. Many people think that Canada s climate is extremely cold all the time, but really that is only accurate in the northern part of Canada where there is definitely colder weather. The southern area of Canada still encounters snow and minus forty degrees in winter, but at shorter durations than in the north. On the other hand, in the southern parts of our country we do face warmer temperatures. In the Western provinces such as Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, we have had our share of what we would call heat waves, with temperatures up to forty degrees celsius. In the very southern part of British Columbia lies the Osoyoos desert which reaches high temperatures during summer months. The Osoyoos desert is not the only desert in Canada though, the Arctic tundra is sometimes referred to as a cold and harsh desert with permafrost and minimal plant and animal life. • 7. Thanksgiving Reflection Paper In order to understand tradition one has to fully immerse themselves into a situation where tradition is taking place. Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to explore what it means to celebrate, the holiday is an American holiday only and is celebrated in a multitude of different ways with an endless amount of traditional flare that changes from familyto family. I have many biases as to what the Thanksgivingholiday looks like. Political rants, family members fighting over things from the past, children running around creating chaos. I chose my family to observe because I wanted to gain somewhat of an outsider perspective on what it was like to be around my family at the holidays. Obviously I have been going to Thanksgiving with these same people my whole life but I wanted to be able to look at the gathering in a different way and understand in a more significant way why the way my family celebrates may be different from how I ve seen other people s families celebrate. As I step toward the house that I have known my entire life I find myself inspecting every inch of the outer areas. The pile of crunchy, dull colored leaves that had been pushed to a corner as if not to interfere with the delicately arranged garden that surrounded the lands perimeter just along the sidewalk. The flowers in the surrounding garden have all died and are merely brown branches standing tall and spiked awaiting the spring season. The entryway walls are consumed with long weaving branches all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mardi Gras, in the French speaking parts of the world and in some US southern states is the last day of carnival festivities preceding Lent, the time of penitence observed by Christians in preparation for Easter. Mardi Gras ( Fat Tuesday ) is a French term for Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent. As she sang the song If Ever I Cease To Love, Alexis found himself completely lost to her charms. He trailed her on a tour south and cought up with her in New Orleans. It was almost Mardi Gras and when the local inhabitants discovered a real Grand Duke was to be among them, they sat up and took notice. A new carnival Krewe was elaborated. A new king was named Rex Lord of Misrule. An official holiday was announced and street maskers were forbidden to form a united procession. Carnival colors were chosen purple, green, and gold. At the city hall a throne like chair was erected for Alexis. Alexis arrived on the scene and the parade ensued. Since all the bands knew of his great liking for the song If Ever I Cease To Love, band after band played it. The song has remained an integral part of Mardi Gras. Alexis Alexandrovich had helped to fix the pattern that Mardi Gras would thence forth follow: official holiday, Rex, and If Ever I Cease To Love as its song.(The Folklore of American Holidays pg. 84 97) Mardi Gras in New Orleans attracts tourists from around the world. Describe the Basis of Feminist Criminology The Basis Of Feminist Criminology Feminist criminology was created out of the realization that criminology from its beginnings focused on the male criminal and the unlawful acts they committed. When in the fact it could be argued female crime was studied as far back as 1800 s, female criminal activity, its causes and the effects in which it placed on public opinion were often disregarded. Over the past 20 years, there has been a significantly different approach in how females are being dealt with inside the criminal justice system. This has been the result of a more broadening law enforcement effort, stringent medication sentencing laws, and post conviction limits to reentry that would greatly influence females. I believe that this train of thought addresses the cause of criminal behavior in women because many viewpoints that fall under the umbrella of feminism are given as different causes of criminal conduct in women .Feminist criminology lacks evidence of a woman s crime. The movie did however fulfill my expectation of being suspenseful but besides that it was completely different in a great way. I believe this movie was a great example of what families go through in situation like that of one in The Lovely Bones. The movie The Lovely Bones is about the murder of a young 14 year old girl named Susie Salmon. She is stuck somewhere in between the real world and heaven trying to find out who her murderer was. In the movie they repeatedly stated that the murderer had to be someone very close to her. To the audience it was very obvious who the murder was but the family had no idea. Throughout her young life Susie loved to take pictures of just about anything. During the movie this interest of hers helped not just her but her family realize the truth. • 11. Similarities Between Lord Of Flies And Lord Of The Flies Living a life without any adults giving orders or making rules, not having to listen to them tell everyone what to do or not to do sounds pretty marvelous. Many kids dream of living their own life without their parents or other adults telling them what to do, however, oftentimes, we see their plan backfire on themselves and they end up running to the parents, not knowing what to do. In the novel The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there is a plane crash, involving a group of boys not much older than 12 years old. The plane crash takes place during World War II and the plane crashes onto an island, stranding the boys by themselves, without any information or adults. In the film adaptation of the novel The Mist by Stephen King, there is a mist that covers the town of Bridgton, trapping a group of adults in a grocery store. The mist, what many people consider an apocalypse, takes place during present times, in the state of Maine. [The novel The Lord of the Flies and the movie The Mist both portray human nature as essentially evil and savage, all the same loyalty plays a key part in influencing the decisions and actions of the characters of each story leading to some sections of resemblance and some sections of discrepancies. This is because hospital bills are very expensive and treatment doesn t begin until payment is made. • 14. Symptoms And Symptoms Of Parkinson s Disease Essay Parkinson Disease by Melissa Green Topical Bibliography In partial fulfillment of the writing requirement for Anatomy and Physiology 304 and the Department of Speech Language Pathology SUNY Buffalo State Fall 2016 Parkinson s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms or tremors, rigidity, (bradykinesia) or slowness of movement and posture instability. Parkinson s involves the malfunction and death of vital nerve cells in the brain. This disease primarily affects neurons in area of the brain called substantia nigra. Some of these dying neurons produce dopamine a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination. The symptoms of Parkinson s disease usually begin on one side of the body and within time spread to both sides of the body. The primary process that causes Parkinson s disease signs and symptoms is when dopamine producing nerve cells in the brain die prematurely. Dopamine is one of the main neurotransmitters in the brain. In a healthy brain, ample dopamine is produced so that the brain cells can coordinate smooth and precise muscle movements. However, when dopamine cells are lost, brain cells communicate abnormally with muscles, which can lead to impaired body movement. (Null, 2013, pp. 153 176) When Parkinson s disease progresses there is a gradual loss of many functions that depend on muscle control such as the ability to write legibly, or speak ... There are many different entitlements and provisions established for early years education. Nursery schools, pre schools, and playgroups all provide learning and play activities, family support, early intervention and childcare for all children under the age of five years old. Nursery schools are predominantly attached to a Surestart centre, which work with children and parents providing education for both, full day care provision, parenting advice, and health and family support, or to a primary school. Where as pre schools and playgroups are normally privately owned and operated, offering childcare, play and education activities. Since 2004 all children in the UK aged 3 and 4 years old have been entitled to free places at nurseries and pre school and even under the care of a childminder for up to 12.5 hours per week, this provision was increased to 15 hours per week from 2010.Day nurseries also offer the same provisions for early years education, but are usually run within a business, or by a voluntary group. Free entitlement and provision provides universal access for all to early years education, play activities, and childcare, which are all extremely beneficial to children and their short and long term educational, social, and behavioural development. This investment is normally completed by private equity firm, venture capital firm, or an informal investor named business angel. They raise funds and invest it on behalf of their investors. There are four most well known investment strategies, i.e. venture capital(VC), leveraged buy out (LBO), mezzanine debt and distressed debt investments. It is distinguishable that VC usually targets the start up firms while LBO purchases majority control in a developed and mature firm. The total global PE assets under management (AUM) in 2013 has climbed up to $3,466 billion, the highest value to date and has remained a steadily growth throughout the past 6 years after financial crisis (Appendix figure 1). The Effects Of Drought On Human Consumption Throughout the past century many areas of the Western United States have faced agricultural concerns, many environmental hazards, and economical stressors stemming from severe drought. According to livescience.com, a drought can be described as a period of unusually dry weather that persists long enough to cause environmental or economic problems. (Oskin, 2014) Droughts are natural occurrences that have been happening for hundreds of years, and although their effects haven t been documented that long, scientists have been able to identify their impacts by using various research methods. Droughts are fairly complex issues that can have many impacts on humans as well as be influenced by human interactions with the environment. Negative impacts are being felt currently in the Western US and are not showing signs of slowing up. Droughtis highly dependent on human consumption of water be it for agricultural, industrial, or household uses. There are many issues regarding human consumption of water, but one of the most notable is the fact that we have very little fresh water available that can be accessed and used by humans. According to the USGS, about 71% of the Earth s surface is water covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5% of all Earth s water (Perlman, 2014). The Theory Of Self Defense Self defense is described in the dictionary as; the act of defending one s person when physically attacked, as by countering blows or overcoming an assailant ( self defense, n.d.). The concept of self defense appears well defined; however, the tactics allowed to protect oneself have evolved just as America has. As technology and weaponry advance, the need for clearer laws pertaining to the actions allowed by an individualneed to be reevaluated and clearly communicated. Starting in early colonial times and moving through history, there is a great deal of differences between the self defense that was once permitted and what is acceptable and tolerated today. In early colonial times, Europeans began settling in America. During this time, there was a need for self defense from both the Native Americans who were already settled on the new land and from the European invaders who wanted to take it over. Self defense was originally termed the first law of nature, and citizens were allowed to use deadly force whenever they judged it necessary. This practice of self defense existed during a time where the individual was considered the ... judge, jury, and executioner (Cornell, 2013). While being attacked, an individual was allowed to determine the course of action he or she could take to protect himself or herself whether it be retreating or killing the perpetrator. Guerrero also states that the regulation of cultural competence standards was thought to have been poorly monitored prior to the 1990s, and that the regulation of CLAS standards did not begin until the 1990s. For example, the Joint Commission now requires the use of the CLAS standards in order to get professional accreditation (Guerrero, 2012). Also, educational institutions use CLAS standards to help with professional training in working with diverse populations. The necessity for this drastic change in approach to crimehas stemmed from the needs of industrial Britain, and the increased awareness of the public, and government, and their perception of crime and punishment. Perhaps what brought the most sympathy for the case was the fact that their protest was peaceful, despite the history of violent protest among workers with riots and groups such as the Luddites. The authorities were equally unsympathetic to this case as they were to the other, more violent movements. Even after public interest attracted an 800,000 signature petition, protesters were oppressed at a demonstration in Oldham. The public was aware of the struggles of the poor worker, but the government still dismissed it; refusing to recognise the desperate circumstance of workers and citing greed as the motive of the Martyrs. Clearly the case had little impact on government opinions, with the treatment of the Chartists and the Rebecca Rioters later in the same decade being the same. The slogan is an example of superficial verbal irony. However, upon closer examination, it sheds more light on Orwell s intent. By stating that war is peace , Orwell sends distinct messages to two vastly different groups. To the proles, the commoners, war is peace can be read at its most literal meaning, that there can one day be peace by defeating the enemy and securing victory. Despite the simple understanding the proles have of the slogan, those in the Inner Party, the group of people in charge of Oceania, have a much more devious understanding of it. To them, the slogan represents the shell game that they play with the common citizen. Much like the street gambler taking bets on which shell the rock is under, the Inner Party assures that the citizenry is focused on whatever country Oceania is fighting, rather than on the leaders of the country. This claim is further supported on page 161 where Orwell describes the futility of the wars that are being fought. None of the three superstates ever attempts any maneuver which involves the risk of serious defeat (Orwell 161). In a developing country such as Indonesia, power stations play an important role in the economy especially for specific and crucial industries in each island and city. The power station needs to be maintained to be as efficient as possible so the electricity can be distributed equally to each island and city. Besides equal distribution, it also needs to reduce power supply interruption and to minimize power loss to each location in specific time frames. The lecturer advised us to create an automated electrical unit system to cascade with the power grid to automatically distribute in each location or crucial area/industry. This problem had interested me and my team and we started to discuss each possibility to resolve the problem and what kind of suitable system would work. Profile Based Personalized Web Search We suggest a Profile based personalized web search framework UPS (User customizable Privacy preserving Search), for each query ac cording to user specified privacy requirements profile is generated. For hierarchical user pro file we trust two conflicting metrics, namely personalization utility and privacy risk, with its NP hardness proved we formulate the problem of Profile based personalized search as Risk Profile Generalization. With the help of two greedy algorithms, namely GreedyIL and GreedyDP, we generate the expected search result, greedy algorithms support runtime profiling. While the former tries to maximize the discriminating power (DP), the latter attempts to minimize the in formation loss (IL). By exploiting a number of heuristics, GreedyIL outperforms GreedyDP significantly. For the client to decide whether to personalize a query in UPS we provide an inexpensive mechanism. Before each runtime profiling this decision can be made to improve the stability of the search results while avoid the needless exposure of the profile. 3.1 System Architecture : Indeed, the privacy concern is one of the main barriers is how to attain personalized search though preserving users privacy and deploying serious personalized search applica tions. Now, over the past ninety one years, that tax policy has evolved to over 72,000 pages. Since the tax code has become so lengthy and nearly impossible to understand, the topic of taxreform has been in the minds of many. Although, most barely think about tax reform until tax season. It is a controversial subject due to the impact a change in tax code would have on the American people. While someone that only made one hundred dollars would pay seven dollars to the government; this they may deem unfair. The common ground the two parties would meet on would be a flat tax. So, any household that is classified as on or below the poverty line will not be taxed whatsoever. Then the tax amount for everyone else would be chosen based off of the governments projected spending amount for that year, and incorporating the idea of reducing the deficit. It would take a lot of work to get implemented, not only would the idea have to be adopted by both parties, it would have to be supported by two of the three branches of government. The bill would begin in the House of Representatives, after being passed there it would move to a vote with the Senate. If the bill continues to be passed it will move to the executive branch where it can either be signed of vetoed by the president, although a veto can be overridden with a two thirds vote from Congress. Once it is passed the existing tax code would have to be completely thrown out and the flat tax implemented. The challenge of accurately representing ethnography, the critical analysis and systematic inspection of everyday life across cultures, has been repeatedly attempted with myriad intentions and has subsequently evolved over time. This paper will examine four iconic anthropological filmmakers in the mid twentieth century in their individual distinctive endeavors to contribute to and accomplish this goal of developing ethnographic film. From Robert Flaherty s objective to showcase cultureas art, to Margaret Mead and Gregory Batesons intent to produce a purely unbiased and scientific cinematic record, to John Marshall s desire to present works which would engage audiences politically, one can trace the evolving narrative of ethnographic film itself, climaxing in the ultimate quest for reflexivity. Robert Flaherty s famous work Nanook of the North (1922) artistically depicts the life of Nanook, a fictional Inuk man in the Arctic. Throughout what became known as the pioneering documentary of its field, the film follows Nanook s family in their day to day tasks. With no dialogue, a dramatic score ever presently serves as narration throughout the staged scenes of trading, hunting, and building igloos. Another key component that adds a lot of character to this modern spin of the Harlem Renaissance is the exceptional costumes by a Cuban designer, Isabel Toledo; she found enough sparkle, feathers and beads to dress a flapper army. As they are more likely to have white collar jobs and even considered overrepresented in professional workplaces in the United States, it is not surprising that Asians earn higher incomes than the average white individual (Wingfield). Thus, it is feasible that Asians serve as a model minority for other minorities and maybe even the majority, as many strive to have the same opportunities as them. Moreover, in the film Get Out, African Americans are portrayed as the main minority; the protagonist, Chris, is the only black person in a white suburban town (Truffaut Wong). However, in two scenes, an Asian man named Hiroki Tanaka participates in the modern slave auction and ultimately accomplishes his role as the model minority (Truffaut Wong). The man blends in with the white crowd and enforces the concept of the model minority, as he is seen to be on the ranks of white people. Furthermore, by definition, the model minority is not offensive as its denotation is meant to praise the group. Asians are seen to thrive economically and their responsibility, motivation, and the success as a result are proof that American meritocracy is effective (Wingfield). While on the other hand Agile manager are not bound to make such plans as the Agile process itself guarantees the quality control and assurance. Agile creates a quality product by using a combination of a couple of practices i.e. Agile Project Execution and Agile Project Monitoring and Control (Duncan, PEERCY,2012). • 54. Smackover Formation A petroleum system is a system that includes a pod of some active source rock with their very nature genetically related to build up and accumulation of oil and gas. Petroleum system includes geological elements, as well as the processes, which are crucial and essential for the existence of oil and gas accumulation. Petroleumis a compound that is made up of high concentrations of biological and thermal hydrocarbongaseous components that are contained in conventional reservoirs, tight reservoirs, fractured shale, gas hydrates, as well as coal. It also includes high concentrations of condensates, crude oils, and natural bitumen in the reservoirs, and generally in carbonate and siliciclastic rocks. In this view, we may describe a system as an interdependence of elements as well as processes, which form the very functional unit that gives rise to the hydrocarbon accumulations (Mancini, Parcell, Puckett, Benson, 2003). Petroleum system processes include source rock, seal rock, reservoir rock as well as overburden rock. The processes inherent in petroleum system include the trap formation and the generation, migration and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This lower member is thinnest near the central parts of the depositional basins, and the up dip areas are the thickest. The middle member has light brown to medium skeletal wackestones that are interbedded with carbonate mudstones that are organic and highly argillaceous.
