• Single cell organisms
• Prokaryotic cell
• No true nucleus
• Less complex than eukaryotes
• No chloroplast and mitochondria
• Irregular shape nucleoid without nuclear
membrane

6. SHAPES
• Bacteria are classified by shape into three
basic groups:
1. Cocci
2. Bacilli
3. Spirochete

7. GENE THAT
MODIFY SHAPE
• Mre B gene modify the shape of bacteria.
• MreB protein form a band in the interior
of cytoplasmic membrane
• Cocci shape bacteria have inactivated
MreB gene
• Cocci lack MreB gene naturally

8. COCCI
• Cocci are spherical and ovoid shape
• Some remain attach after binary fission
• Cocci have different planes of division

9. ONE PLANE
DIVISION
• Diplococci  arrange in pairs
• Streptococci  arrange in chains

10. TWO DIVISION
PLANE • Tetrad  arrange in square

11. THREE PLANE
DIVISION
• Sarcina arrangement
• Arrange in cubes of eight

12. RANDOM PLANE
• Irregular plane
• Grape like cluster

14. SIZE • Average size is about 0.5 – 1.0
micrometer

BACILLI
• Rod shape bacteria
• Like cocci, bacilli can be arranged
together

2. Streptobacillus
3. Coccobacillus

DIVISION
a) Bacillus  Single rod

c) Coccobacillus oval or similar to cocci

18. SIZE OF RODS
• 0.5- 1.0 micrometer long
• 1.0 – 4.0 micrometer wide

• Spirillum thick , rigid and spiral
