Court of Appeal Holding Clarifies Employer Calculation of Probationary Period
A recent ruling by the California Court of Appeal clarifies when a government employer should
calculate the beginning and end of an employee s probationary period. In California Department of
Correction and Rehabilitation v. California State Personnel Board (2015) Cal.App.5th , the Court of
Appeal held that the first day of the probationary period should be counted when calculating the
probationary period, and therefore, any notice not properly served as required by statute within the
period is defective.
The case revolved around Appellant, McCauley, who was hired as a Correctional Sergeant at Avenal
State Prison. His new position began on December 2, 2008 and was subject to a 12 month
probationary period before becoming permanent. On December 1, 2009, the California Department of
Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR) served McCauley with a notice of rejection removing him from
the position effective December 8, 2009. On December 2, 2009, another document was served on him
extending his probationary period until December 8, 2009. McCauley contended the papers were
invalid due to the CDCR s failure to comply with timing and notice requirements in relation to the
duration of the probationary period. He appealed to the California State Personnel Board which agreed
with him and revoked the notice of rejection. The CDCR thereafter challenged the finding by filing a
writ of mandate in the trial

In this context, the role of writing is little different from its role in any other subject; it allows students
to see how they are progressing and to get feedback from the teacher, to monitor and diagnose
problems. Successful writing depends on more than the ability to produce clear and correct sentences.
Writing tasks which have whole texts as their outcome relate appropriately to the ultimate goal of
those learners who need to write English in their social, educational or professional lives. Some
students know already what they need to be able to write in English. Others may be uncertain about
the nature of their future needs. Our role as teachers is to build communicative potential. Many
students have to prove their competence in English and sometimes in other subjects by producing
compositions for examinations. [1; 25]
Classroom writing tasks should reflect the ultimate goal of enabling students to write whole texts
which form connected, contextualized, and appropriate pieces of communication.
One approach to writing is to look at instance of writing and to analyse the features of the written text.
This will tell us something about what students have to produce. It is possible to build up a list of
skills that writers need:
getting the grammar right;

The Black Arts Movement And The Civil Rights Movement
The twentieth century was one of the most active periods of social movements, along with the Civil
Rights campaigns of the 1960s was the Antiwar Movement, where most Americans were in opposition
with the government on the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. Domestically, social and economic
conditions gave voice to the people to embark on a revolution for change. For African Americans the
struggle for equality had been going on for decades. But the movement went to a new level after the
death of Emmitt Till in August 1955, a 14 year old black boy murdered and disfigured by white men
in Mississippi for allegedly flirting with a white woman, and the arrest of Rosa Parks December 1955,
who refused to give up her seat in the colored section of the bus to a white passenger. The beginning
of the Feminist Movement in 1963 women began to fight for respect and equality socially and
economically. The Black Arts Movement which was the cultural wing of the Black Power Movement
began to play out on college campuses. The 1970s remained tied to the social experiments and
struggles of the 1960s. African Americans were still fighting for education equality around the
country. But signs emerged of another change. January 23, 1973 President Richard Nixon announces
the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. The Civil Rights Movement and the Women s
Movement accomplished many of their goals. The U.S. suffered an economic recession, interest rates
and inflation were high. Music

Church Visit Response Essay
Church Visit Response Essay I grew up going to Catholic Church my whole life. I have completed all
my sacraments and attended 11 years of catechism. I am very comfortable in a Catholic Church and
feel very at ease with the atmosphere and rituals performed in a Catholic church. The only time I have
ever stepped foot in a church that was not Catholic has only been for a wake or a wedding. So when it
comes to experiencing different kinds of cultural and religious practices, I am very naïve. Catholic
mass is very quiet and serene. We sing the same hymns and keep the decibels very low. Mass always
follows the same pattern and it is very structured. Although I feel connected to the Catholic Church, I
have stopped attending on a regular basis as I have gotten older. I feel that I have stopped attending
because I would often leave church not feeling fulfilled. I have a friend who has been inviting to her
church for a few years. I took this essay as an opportunity to finally attend. I visited Celebration
Church on Easter Sunday 2016. Given that it was a special Christian holiday, the church was
incredibly crowded. They had numerous children activities taking place in the parking lot. The church
volunteers that helped me find a parking and greeted me as I walked through the door were extremely
friendly. I am not trying to sound cynical, but they were almost too friendly. This was the first thing I
noticed that set this church apart from what I have previously experienced. In fact

Government Encryption
Government s Encryption Issue In the discussions of the feud between Apple and the Federal Bureau
Investigation (FBI), one controversial issue has been created. It centers around the encryption of
technology. The FBI should not be given the access to backdoors in encryption as innocent users are
exposed, American (US) businesses are harmed, and the increased rate of cybercrime. There are many
reasons why the FBI should not have access. One of example is a weakened cyber security. When
encryption backdoors are created, it adds exploits and risks to the software. On the Center of Debate
Technology (CDT) article, it states Backdoors severely weaken cybersecurity, leaving users exposed
to malicious hacking and crime a government mandated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Again, the CDT article states Consider, for example, the difficulty US companies would have selling
smartphones or network servers in the European Union (EU) that are built to enable easy access for
the National Security Agency ... it is difficult and expensive to both build a backdoor security
vulnerability and then defend that vulnerability against unauthorized use (Joseph Lorenzo Hall). Hall
broadens his claim by saying that customers will prefer not to buy mobile devices that abuse their
rights for privacy, and their own personal data. This would affect companies such as Apple because
they would lose money due to phones not selling. It would also cost a lot of money to create a
backdoor while maintaining the guarantee of people s data to be not compromised. Everyday, people
such as iPhone users, get their info stolen due to bad decisions made on their phones such as
purchasing items online. If backdoors were to be created and to be made available to everyone, the
rate of cyber crime would skyrocket. Evidence can be found in the article Inside Apple CEO,Tim
Cook s fight with the FBI . The author, Lev Grossman, explains how Tim Cook thinks backdoors are a
very risky option, and how they will not support the FBI. This verifies that Cook cares about his
customers and the reputation of his company. After examining the evidence, it is clear that Cook does
not agree with the idea of backdoors and cares about his company and as well as his

A Study On Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease, SCD, is an inherited autosomal recessive genetic disorder that affects 1 in 500
Americans of West African descent with one in 12 African Americans and one in 100 Hispanics being
carriers ( Learning. 2014). SCD is prevalent in individuals with origins in equatorial countries, such as
central Africa, Near East, Mediterranean area, and in parts of India (McCance, 2010). Sickle cell
anemia, sickle cell thalassemia, and sickle cell Hb C are all forms of sickle cell disease with sickle cell
anemia being the most severe. Within the general population there is a 0.7% chance of two African
American parents having a child with sickle cell anemia, a 1 in 800 birth risk for sickle cell Hb C, and
1 in 1700 birth risk for sickle cell thalassemia (2010). The incidence of sickle cell trait carriers can
range from 7% to 13% in blacks and up to 45% in people from Eastern Africa. In comparison to the
other forms of SCD, sickle cell anemia is present in a homozygous form. Individuals are considered to
be sickle cell trait carriers when they inherit Hb S from one parent and normal hemoglobin from the
other parent, these individuals rarely present with any clinical manifestations (2010).
Individuals with SCD inherit the sickle globin gene (HbS) from one parent and a normal (HbA) from
the other parent. The allele for individuals with a sickle cell trait would be HbAS or AS and HbSS for
those with SCD (2010). When two individuals are carriers to the defective gene

Bitter Girls Case Study
Case #3 Bitter Girls
1. What is the image you first think of when you hear the brand name Bitter Girls? What are both the
strengths and weaknesses of selecting this brand name as to the goal of empowering young girls?
When I first hear the brand name Bitter Girls I image a product that focuses around females who are
unhappy, upset, need a place to vent, a way to express anger or resentment, or a product made by bitter
women. I would not have assumed that the brand was supposed to be uplifting, inspirational, or
something that was meant to help women better themselves and be happier. After watching the Bitter

Although there may be a possibility for testing the idea of a Bitter Boys brand I don t think boys of
that age would respond to it as well as tween girls. I believe that teenage boys would find the T shirts
and quotes to be slightly too feminine in nature and too expressive for the stigma of their age and
gender. I feel that this brand might be more successful if marketed to parents who still shop for their
sons, a younger target market perhaps. Tween boys tend to focus on what their peers see as cool and
would not feel comfortable stepping out of their comfort zone to wear such an individualized message
or brand as Bitter Boys. Tween boys also are not looking for ways to empower themselves through
quotes and products. Women are generally more openly emotional and expressive then men which is
why the brand and the quotes work so well for them. If creating a Bitter Boys brand, again, the
audience would have to be much younger and the quotes less emotional for them to want to buy the
product.
4. Explore the Bitter Girls web site www.bittergirls.com. Is the web site effective? Consider the target
audience when answering this question. How can the web site be improved? Explain.

Taking a Look at Lactation
Lactation, as well as the mammary glands by which mothers provide their young with milk, have long
been regarded as an exclusive and defining trait of the vertebrate class Mammalia. In fact, Linnaeus
himself outfitted our own phylogenetic class with this name because they possess mammae (Gregory
1910). How such complex methods of delivering nourishment to young evolved in the first place has
always been a hotly contested topic. Breasts, teats, and nipples are all soft tissue, so they cannot be
directly observed in the fossil record. What original structures evolved into mammary glands? Did all
mammals have them? Is it possible that our reptilian ancestors (or rather, our common ancestor with
modern reptiles) also lactated? This paper examines the work of paleontologists, evolutionary
biologists, and geneticists of the last 120 years to try to gain some insight into these questions, and
whether they can ever be truly answered.
Before delving into the origins of lactation, one must understand the basic progression of mammalian
evolution from our last common ancestor with reptiles to the modern placental mammal. The last
common ancestors diverged into two groups: synapsids and sauropsids. Synapsids are the ancestors of
mammals and their extinct relatives (often called mammal like reptiles) while sauropsids went on to
become reptiles and birds (Oftedal 2002). The two clades were distinguished by characteristics of their
skulls. Synapsids branched out into many different types,

Zeus Compare And Contrast
Zeus was known for a number of things, but his love affairs was one of the numerous things he was
famous for. Zeus was the king of all the gods, he was known for the god of the skies, weather, fate and
laws. Out of all of his lovers he had over the years, his first was known as Aphrodite. She was the
goddess of beauty and was followed by Zeus when she first emerged from the great sea, but she
managed to escape him. It did not take much time for Zeus wife Hera to realize that their marriage
was falling into the deep end. Zeus had a deep lust which then made Hera s jealousy fester. (Summary
1). Although Zeus had a dozen of love affairs he created a union wit Hera that resulted in four
children. Arguments soon began to arise between Zeus and Hera and became a part of their daily lives.

things following his birth. Apollo had a numours things he is remembered for, but a few is being the
Olympian God of the Sun, the Light and the Music and the Prophecy. (GREEK GODS.INFO 4). Hera
and Zeus marriage was not the typical heavenly known marriage today. One of the biggest differences
from today s marriage verses there marriage would be that Hera was Zeus sister. The first wedding of
Olympians was not known as a small occasion or get together. During Hera and Zeus wedding all the
gods and goddesses attended, but they for sure did not attend empty handed. Hera and Zeus did not
have any ordinary wedding they instead had a glorious wedding night one that lasted three hundred.

The Change In Macbeth And Lady Macbeth s Wickedness
In William Shakespeare s Macbeth, there are multitude of changes throughout the play within
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth s wickedness. A metamorphosis takes place deep inside both characters;

of the sea and land, thus do go about, thrice to thine and thrice to mine and thrice again, to mine and
thrice again, to make up nine. Peace! The charms wound up. (Act 1.2 Lines ) The witches pour

loyal to Macbeth as he is with King Duncan. Lady Macbeth does not care she would love to go ahead
and kill him and become Queen of Scotland for her to conduct this horrible crime she has in mind.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have to wait till everyone leaves the castle. Later on that night, Macbeth

is this the dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand...A dagger of the mind, a false
creation proceeding from the heat oppressed brain? (Act 2.2 Lines 32 33 and Lines 37 and 38)

Analysis Of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
1. The Man who shot liberty valance Tom Doniphon, the outlaw hero, shot Liberty Valance To protect
Hallie and Ransom Stoddard because he knew that Ransom is the right future for his town and Hallie,
even though Ransom views contradict with Toms views and wishes. Throughout the movie there is a
clear message; wilderness V. civilization. Shine bow, Tom, Liberty, etc., portraying the wilderness and
Tom Donovan and The East portraying the civilization. Tom believed in the lawless frontier and is
even Compared to Liberty by Ransom saying, you are as bad as he is (liberty). Throughout the film,
Tom realizes that Ransom is a great asset to his Town and a wonderful man to Hallie who teaches the
whole town how to live a safer, happier and more civilized life. Tom does not believe in this way of
life and prefers the wilderness, but he thinks about his town and what is the best for them in the long
run, showing that Tom deep down strongly supports personal Integrity. Tom lets the town believe that
Ransom was the one who shot liberty because Tom wanted the town to support Ransom even more.
He knew after saving Ransoms live and shooting Liberty; he had lost his lawless freedom (liberty) and
the women he loved. When he told Ransom that he was the one who killed Liberty Valance, he said:
Cold blooded murder, but I can live with it. Hallie s happy. She wanted you alive. ... Hallie s your girl
now. Go back in there and take that nomination. You taught her how to read and write; now give her
something to read and write about! he called his shooting of Valance cold blooded murder even
though it was justifiable homicide to prevent the killing of Ransom, who he knew didn t have a chance
in a gunfight. I think Tom called it murder not from a legal standpoint but from his perspective as a
gunfighter since he cowardly killed Liberty from a corner instead of facing him in a gunfight.
However, he realized that this was necessary to boost Ransoms position among the townspeople
because Tom saw him as the best hope for the future of Shine Bow and Hallie. That s why he said, I
can live with that. He told Ransom the truth because he wanted him not to feel guilty about killing
someone and that at least one person would

Challenges Facing A Growing Food Shortage And Food Waste...
Most of us, when presented with a foreign meal usually ask the question well, what s in it? Underlying
this question is the notion integrated into all of us that we have a right to know. Now, we are not
always talking about legal rights when we ask. Most times, we simply think the other person has a
moral obligation to tell us. Inarguably, human life is fickle. Physically, we are one of the weakest
beings on this Earth. Hence, this question, simple as it may seem, is crucial in ensuring our survival.
Today, we face the simultaneous challenges of a growing food shortage and food waste problem.
Considering the nature, characteristics, and source of these problems, it appears that a deontological
perspective can best remedy the situation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, ironically, even in these bountiful countries, there exists a significant part of the population
that lack access to food. If the manufacturers asked themselves, could I live on the food I am
marketing at the rate I am pushing for consumption? and aligned their own interests with the interests
of everyone else, the quality of food in the market would not be compromised. Similarly, this logic
would also solve the problem of food waste because the person disposing of a ton of unconsumed food
would ask himself what if everyone in the world disposed of a ton of food today?
Prior attempts from utilitarianism to try to calculate and predict which decisions will yield the best
results has obviously not worked. The result of the cost benefit analysis upon which governments have
decided policies have proven to be inaccurate due to the existence of the food crisis. The wellness of
its people is the fundamental duty of a government. If the government truly made decisions based
solely on its duty to the people and withdrew itself from adverse and unnecessary politics, we would
not find ourselves in this crisis. Large firms spend millions on lobbying to nurture and fuel their
unethical practices. They also spurt out threats of laying off thousands of workers if their grasp on the

Mass Communication Effects on Indian Society
ABSTRACT
Our world today is increasingly driven by a mass media due to the explosion of different means of
communication, especially electronic communication such as satellite TV and Internet. The media is
viewed as a source of power that influences, controls, and promotes new standards in the society and
reinforces the existing ones. As the media increases in use as our prime source for information and
values, there is a great need to critically evaluate inherent socio political and cultural barriers. This
study is conducted to identify inherent socio political and cultural barriers for mass media impact on

Tracking this growth in a meaningful perspective is imperative since its spread and reach have been
mired in socio political and cultural barriers. The complexities that limit the growth of the Indian
media story are based on a heady mix of poverty, bias, economics, and the inherent trappings of a
religious philosophy that find echo in the fatalistic suppositions of Hinduism. With minimal impact to
change the state of the nation, the barriers that come in the way of the free flow of information need to
be tackled with more alacrity and awareness, lest the growth gets sucked into the vortex of its own
limitations. The advertisement driven consumerist mooring that is propelling the flawed Indian info
age communication story seems to be a pointer in this direction.

The Battle Of The War On Southeast Asia
Beginning in 1940 with the successful invasion of French Indochina, the Empire of Japan displayed
power over the colonialists from the Battle of Malaya to their occupation of the Andaman and Nicobar
islands. The prelude to Japan s war on Southeast Asia was its concurrent war against China which had
started in 1937. As a result of this invasion, culture within Southeast Asia was changed. There are
varying other factors to include when identifying how this occupation changed what was currently
then known as the Dutch East Indies, which includes the somewhat linear and consistently rising
changes socially, politically and economically.1 The beginning of regular contact between Europeans
and the people of Indonesia began in 1512, but it wasn t until 1800 that the government in the
Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies.2 For the duration of Dutch rule, their hold on the
Dutch East Indies was weak outside of coastal strongholds but it wasn t until the early 20th century
that their lands extend to what is currently recognized to be Indonesia s borders.3 A nationalist
movement had been undertaken by the people of Indonesia, however was often suppressed by the
Dutch. With this movement beginning in 1908 it wasn t until 1945 until the Nationalist Revolution had
begun. Lasting four years, the Dutch were consistently able to maintain industrial assets, towns and
major cities but found themselves with the inability to control the countryside.4 The inspiration for

How Did Friedrich And Finer Protect Against The Bureaucracy
Taking place in 1940, the Friedrich Finer debate featured the themes of how much discretion to give to
bureaucrats, what accountability measures should be in place against bureaucratic incompetence, and
if the other branches of government are capable of protecting against the bureaucracy. In debating
these, Friedrich and Finer have shaped the conversation around the bureaucracy in the many decades
since. When it comes to bureaucratic discretion, Friedrich believed that bureaucrats needed to almost
complete discretion about their work. If bureaucrats are experts at their work, then they should be
allowed to use their expertise to maximize their work outputs. Yet, as Finer pointed out, bureaucrats
may not always want to maximize their work ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This culture of professionalism will prevent bureaucrats from becoming lazy or malicious in their
intents; the other bureaucrats won t allow such behavior to be tolerated. This culture will act as in
inner check against any potential wrongdoing by the bureaucracy. Thus, checks by the other
government branches is completely unnecessary. When combined with the other branches inability to
be experts in all of the bureaucracy s activities, it is also only risks the other branches decreasing the
efficiency of the bureaucracy. On the other hand, Finer argued that those checks by the other branches
is what prevented the bureaucrats from giving into their poor human nature. Additionally, these checks
act to give some democratic control over an otherwise completely undemocratic branch of
government. In a democracy, that is completely unacceptable; the judicial branch s final say in how
laws are interpreted, congress ability to appropriate agencies budgets and approve nominees, and the
president s ability to nominate those nominees is necessary for the bureaucracy to maintain legitimacy
with the American public. Whatever lack of expertise the other branches may have about the
bureaucracy s work is well worth this legitimacy. With that said, Finer s argument about the
bureaucracy, and what to do about, is the more accurate

The Wedding Of Ursula Essay
When telling the story of Ursula s childhood, Lawrence tells us early on that, Ursula was the one for
realities. (259). From this point it is apparent that her story is going to be different. While she relies on
the hard realities of life and is very caught up in the things outside of her, her mind body conscious
self is just as active as Tom or Anna s. In fact, it may be even stronger for her because she seems to be
more aware of it: She became aware of herself, that she was a separate entity in the midst of an
unseparated obscurity, that she must go somewhere, she must become something. (Lawrence 281).
She has her first experience with love at an early age, when she encounters Anton Skrebensky. At one
point during their courtship, Anton comes to the wedding of Ursula s uncle, Fred, and Ursula has a
very distinct experience similar to the one her mother Anna had in the cornfield. At the touch of her

Compare And Contrast The Stamp Act And The Tea Act
After the French and Indian War, Britain went into debt. To pay off this debt they taxed the colonists.
The colonists were not happy with these taxes because they didn t have representation in Parliament.
The Stamp Act and the Tea Act were two acts that Parliament passed. There were multiple actions of
the British government after 1763 that caused anger in the colonies, leading to the Declaration of
Independence.
In 1765 the Stamp Act was passed and colonists had various reactions to these acts. The Stamp Act
was an act created by the British. This was to pay off the debt they had from the French and Indian
War. Items that were taxed were newspapers, dice, legal documents, and playing cards. Basically all

they still were tar and feathering the British. On December 16, 1173 the Boston Tea Party occurred.

The Drug Enforcement Agency Defines A Schedule 1 Substance
On August 14, 1970, the Assistant Secretary of Health, Dr. Roger O. Egeberg wrote a letter
recommending the plant, marijuana, be classified as a schedule 1 substance, he succeeded and it has
remained that way for nearly 45 years. The Drug enforcement agency defines a schedule 1 substance
as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs are
the most dangerous drugs of all the drug schedules with potentially severe psychological or physical
dependence. ( Drug Schedules. DEA.gov.) There was no science backing this claim, and when it
comes to marijuana neither of those things are true. It does not have a high potential for abuse, leading
to a dependance in around 9 to 10% of it s users. By comparison cocaine, a schedule two substance
with less abuse potential than schedule 1 drugs hooks 20% of those who use it. Around 25% of heroin
users become addicted. The worst being tobacco which has an addiction rate of around 30%.
Prohibition has failed to control the use and production of marijuana and there is no evidence it
decreases drug use. Even with hundreds of thousands of marijuana related arrests, and the billions
spent on prohibition programs, usage rates have stayed pretty much the same. A 2013 survey
conducted by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) showed that, basically, marijuana prohibition has
failed. The survey took its

Analysis Of Cyan s Sunridge Chestnut
Blaze Cyan is a detailed printmaker who works in etching. His artwork beautifully discovers the
intricate beauty of the tree. Starting out by sketching with technical pens and watercolors, Cyan
reworks his pieces until he is able to make them unique. He uses old photographs to create the
artwork, to inspire his imagination and to create new possibilities. Using the structure, shape, and
texture of trees, he creates an image with unity and diversity. Beginning with the sugar lift and
aquatint method, Cyan creates a backdrop that varies in value in the tree. After etching the first time,
hard opaque ground covers the plate, which allows Cyan to create numerous linework. Cyan uses
black and white in his pieces to emphasize the complex design and add a impressive quality to his

His desire is for the viewer to appreciate not only the tree form itself, but also it s character.
Inspiration for creating his pieces come from Victorian illustrators and oriental prints. By looking at
these resources, Cyan came to the realization that no two will ever be alike. Each piece has unique
diversity that sets the individual artwork apart. Sunridge Chestnut illustrates this idea beautifully as
lines are used in different directions and the tree takes on almost a new shape of its own. One can look
at this piece for hours on end, without truly discovering the full artwork in its totality. Cyan really
desires the audience to almost be lost within the picture, continuing to look for new additions. In
Hallowed Etching, Cyan uses multiple shapes and values to support this idea. One reason why Cyan
picked trees as subject matter was because its growth is gradual over time. Even at the end of human
life, a tree will (most likely) still be in place, calmly growing. The character of every tree evolves into
something stronger, deeper, and represents a ideal that is globally

This could potentially be the vacuum or circuit in Hurston s life that attested for her fame in the
Harlem Renaissance. The war generals were also very significant people in the development of
Eatonville and neighboring towns. Now, these founders were, to a man, people who had risked their
lives and fortunes that Negroes might be free. Those who had fought in the ranks had thrown their
weight behind the cause of Emancipation (5). This demonstration of leadership and uncertainty are
characteristics that Hurston posses. So, in a raw, bustling frontier, the experiment of self government
for Negroes was tried. White Maitland and Negro Eatonville have lived side by side for fifty five years

usually results in amending one s behavior or having to comply with the rules of society. But by

Investigating the Effect of Exercise on Pulse Rate
Aim: To see what happens to the pulse rate during exercise.
Prediction: I predict that the pulse rate will increase in order to take more oxygen for respiration. The
heartbeat will increase and become stronger to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the
muscle cells. The breathing rate will increase in order to get rid of the extra waste such as Carbon

The tar, which is found in the cigarette smoke, irritates the air passage and Carbon dioxide then
reduces the ability of blood to carry oxygen through the bloodstream. I predict that the non smokers
heart rate should be smaller during exercise as they have a healthier more effective heart. Oxygen is
easily pumped around the body this reduces the amount of work that the heart has to do therefore
decreasing the pulse rate.
Plan: =====
*The resting pulse rate will be taken and recorded for both the smoker and non smoker. The heartbeat
will be taken by placing your two middle fingers on your wrist were your artery crosses with the bone.
You must ensure that you do not use your own thumb as this contains a pulse itself.

Bigger Historical Context
I personally think out of the three novels we read this semester, Bigger is more part of his historical
context. I feel that if I was in Biggers s shoes during the 1930 s during that historical period, it would
have been very easy for me to fall into what Bigger did. Bigger was stuck in a system where only
racism, crime, violence and injustice surrounded his world. He felt the only way he could continue
living in a world where he would never be accepted, it was easier to create fear amongst white people.
There comes a time where the frustration gets to someone knowing that no matter what you do in your
life, your destiny will always follow you. For Bigger his destiny was to be a person of color who was
criticized by what he look from the outside. The other two novels that we read during the semester, I
feel Battle Royale was also based on a historical period just like The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. There
were a lot of events occurring such as the hypocritical Japanese government that was taken place. The
Food and Drug Act that came about and the capitalist government that took advantage of the
circumstances of immigrants during that era. I agree that all these 3 main characters do belong in their

The Conflict Of The Niger Delta
INTRODUCTION TO THE CONFLICT IN THE NIGER DELTA
Nigeria is the 7th world largest oil producer and is a major player in the world energy market. Oil and
gas is Nigeria s main source of revenue. It accounts for about 40% of the Gross Domestic Product and
70% of government revenues (Lawal 2004). Crude oil was first discovered in 1956 by Shell British
Petroleum in a small village called Oloibiri present day Bayelsa State. Two years later oil in larger
quantities was discovered in Ogoni.
The Niger delta region has a population of 28 million people, a coverage of 70,000 square kilometers
consisting of 606 fields, 5,284 wells, 7,000 kilometers of pipelines, 10 export terminals, 275 flow
stations and a liquefied natural gas sector (Williams 2011). The Niger delta which is Nigeria s oil belt
has been embroiled in conflict and resistance against the government and multinational oil
corporations that extract oil in the region. The Niger delta is highly volatile with insurgent groups
controlling the area. Years of oil exploitation, environmental degradation and neglecting by the states
has created an impoverished, marginalized and exploited region which has produced resistance form
the youth in the Niger delta region. A regime of state repression and corporate violence has further
generated popular criminal violence, lawlessness, illegal appropriations and insecurity (Williams
2011).

Essay On Hero s Journey
A Hero s Journey The hero s journey can be found in ancient stories from thousands of years ago as
well as present day stories that may hit the big screen. The hero experiences a chain of events that
gives he or she, typically a male, a title of the hero . The hero s journey begins with either an inner
longing to go on a quest, or an exterior call that requires the hero s help outside of the ordinary world.
Heroes may, at first, refuse the call, or may respond to the call immediately. However, there is usually
some resistance to the call because of the potential danger he or she could face from the unknown

Success Is Counted Sweetest Analysis
After only a short sixteen years, I have that realized that success abounds everywhere. To me success
is learning, growing, and changing. While society tries to inculcate that success equals winning, or
being the best at something, I would argue that losing is what truly plants the seed for the greatest
accomplishments in life. A failure is just an opportunity to gain knowledge of what does not work.
This knowledge can then be applied in order to accomplish goals in the future. My theory of success,
contends that failures should not be a cause for frustration, because they are necessary in order to
move forward.
First of all, even history has shown us that success is not measured in the amount of triumphs one has.

popular opinion, Dickinson articulates that success is appreciated more when one works hard and
learns from each attempt, much like Edison did. Often in the face of failure, small victories go
unnoticed, but one must not forget that eventually all those little victories add up. This process leads to
greater self fulfillment and a true feeling of success. The author, Emily Dickinson herself, is a perfect
example of what she conveys in her poem. During her lifetime, Dickinson was not popular, and her
works were rarely published. By most accounts, this would mean Emily Dickinson, a world renowned
poet, was unsuccessful. However, present day opinions acknowledge that she succeeded in writing
enthralling poems. Her works are now celebrated and recognized as highly insightful and

unreliable. However there are many important differences and similarities between the three countries.
Government differences are one of the key points in North korea, South Korea, and the U.S..The

Bart Ticket Analysis
Buying a ticket from a Bart ticket dispenser is pretty difficult if one is not familiar with the ticket
machine. It is a little different compared to other ticket dispensers because it will not tell how much
the rider should pay. There is a fare chart indicating the value of one and round trip fares. In order to
buy a ticket for first time rider, riders need to know how much the fare is, and then purchase a Bart
ticket with the particular value which is needed for the trip. And every time I was looking for how
much I should pay from the chart, it takes me forever to figure out where I am going and the value it
needed for my trip because the words are very tiny and super intensive. There were so many times that
seniors asked me for help, because

The Characteristics Of North American Currency
Have we always known the distinct characteristics of North American currency? The dollar bills and
coins we use today have been through many changes in appearance and value. Paper and metals have
been the appearance of most currency. The change of currency went through early colonial period,
colonial period, Antebellum period, Civil War period and the Reconstruction period to finally establish
what we now know as American Currency. The separation of our country did not represent unity or
form for America. The American currency did not have an identity until the National Banking Act of
1863, established the dollar as the currency of choice.
The currency that was used in most English colonies during the 1600s was coins. The Colonists of that
time would count their money based on the English system that consisted of shillings, pounds, and
pence that was valued as; twelve pence equaled a shilling and twelve shillings equaled a pound
(Walbert, David). The pence were also recognized to be a penny. The currency varied in each region
and some would only accept trade and not pence or schillings. One of the most common identities of
currency later became the Spanish dollar. After so many people had the dollars they become less in
value and caused inflation to the country and a new type of currency needed to be established for the
country.
During the late Colonial period in 1690, a decision was suggested that the Spanish dollar was no
longer of a great value and worth its weight in

  • 2. Court Of Appeal Holding Clarifies Employer Calculation Of... Court of Appeal Holding Clarifies Employer Calculation of Probationary Period A recent ruling by the California Court of Appeal clarifies when a government employer should calculate the beginning and end of an employee s probationary period. In California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation v. California State Personnel Board (2015) Cal.App.5th , the Court of Appeal held that the first day of the probationary period should be counted when calculating the probationary period, and therefore, any notice not properly served as required by statute within the period is defective. The case revolved around Appellant, McCauley, who was hired as a Correctional Sergeant at Avenal State Prison. His new position began on December 2, 2008 and was subject to a 12 month probationary period before becoming permanent. On December 1, 2009, the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR) served McCauley with a notice of rejection removing him from the position effective December 8, 2009. On December 2, 2009, another document was served on him extending his probationary period until December 8, 2009. McCauley contended the papers were invalid due to the CDCR s failure to comply with timing and notice requirements in relation to the duration of the probationary period. He appealed to the California State Personnel Board which agreed with him and revoked the notice of rejection. The CDCR thereafter challenged the finding by filing a writ of mandate in the trial ... In this context, the role of writing is little different from its role in any other subject; it allows students to see how they are progressing and to get feedback from the teacher, to monitor and diagnose problems. Successful writing depends on more than the ability to produce clear and correct sentences. Writing tasks which have whole texts as their outcome relate appropriately to the ultimate goal of those learners who need to write English in their social, educational or professional lives. Some students know already what they need to be able to write in English. Others may be uncertain about the nature of their future needs. Our role as teachers is to build communicative potential. Many students have to prove their competence in English and sometimes in other subjects by producing compositions for examinations. • 6. The Black Arts Movement And The Civil Rights Movement The twentieth century was one of the most active periods of social movements, along with the Civil Rights campaigns of the 1960s was the Antiwar Movement, where most Americans were in opposition with the government on the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. Domestically, social and economic conditions gave voice to the people to embark on a revolution for change. For African Americans the struggle for equality had been going on for decades. But the movement went to a new level after the death of Emmitt Till in August 1955, a 14 year old black boy murdered and disfigured by white men in Mississippi for allegedly flirting with a white woman, and the arrest of Rosa Parks December 1955, who refused to give up her seat in the colored section of the bus to a white passenger. The beginning of the Feminist Movement in 1963 women began to fight for respect and equality socially and economically. The Black Arts Movement which was the cultural wing of the Black Power Movement began to play out on college campuses. The 1970s remained tied to the social experiments and struggles of the 1960s. African Americans were still fighting for education equality around the country. But signs emerged of another change. January 23, 1973 President Richard Nixon announces the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. The Civil Rights Movement and the Women s Movement accomplished many of their goals. • 7. Church Visit Response Essay Church Visit Response Essay I grew up going to Catholic Church my whole life. I have completed all my sacraments and attended 11 years of catechism. I am very comfortable in a Catholic Church and feel very at ease with the atmosphere and rituals performed in a Catholic church. The only time I have ever stepped foot in a church that was not Catholic has only been for a wake or a wedding. So when it comes to experiencing different kinds of cultural and religious practices, I am very naïve. Catholic mass is very quiet and serene. We sing the same hymns and keep the decibels very low. Mass always follows the same pattern and it is very structured. Although I feel connected to the Catholic Church, I have stopped attending on a regular basis as I have gotten older. I feel that I have stopped attending because I would often leave church not feeling fulfilled. I have a friend who has been inviting to her church for a few years. I took this essay as an opportunity to finally attend. I visited Celebration Church on Easter Sunday 2016. Given that it was a special Christian holiday, the church was incredibly crowded. They had numerous children activities taking place in the parking lot. The church volunteers that helped me find a parking and greeted me as I walked through the door were extremely friendly. I am not trying to sound cynical, but they were almost too friendly. This was the first thing I noticed that set this church apart from what I have previously experienced. In fact ... It centers around the encryption of technology. The FBI should not be given the access to backdoors in encryption as innocent users are exposed, American (US) businesses are harmed, and the increased rate of cybercrime. There are many reasons why the FBI should not have access. One of example is a weakened cyber security. When encryption backdoors are created, it adds exploits and risks to the software. Hall broadens his claim by saying that customers will prefer not to buy mobile devices that abuse their rights for privacy, and their own personal data. This would affect companies such as Apple because they would lose money due to phones not selling. It would also cost a lot of money to create a backdoor while maintaining the guarantee of people s data to be not compromised. Everyday, people such as iPhone users, get their info stolen due to bad decisions made on their phones such as purchasing items online. If backdoors were to be created and to be made available to everyone, the rate of cyber crime would skyrocket. Evidence can be found in the article Inside Apple CEO,Tim Cook s fight with the FBI . The author, Lev Grossman, explains how Tim Cook thinks backdoors are a very risky option, and how they will not support the FBI. This verifies that Cook cares about his customers and the reputation of his company. A Study On Sickle Cell Disease Sickle cell disease, SCD, is an inherited autosomal recessive genetic disorder that affects 1 in 500 Americans of West African descent with one in 12 African Americans and one in 100 Hispanics being carriers ( Learning. 2014). SCD is prevalent in individuals with origins in equatorial countries, such as central Africa, Near East, Mediterranean area, and in parts of India (McCance, 2010). Sickle cell anemia, sickle cell thalassemia, and sickle cell Hb C are all forms of sickle cell disease with sickle cell anemia being the most severe. Within the general population there is a 0.7% chance of two African American parents having a child with sickle cell anemia, a 1 in 800 birth risk for sickle cell Hb C, and 1 in 1700 birth risk for sickle cell thalassemia (2010). The incidence of sickle cell trait carriers can range from 7% to 13% in blacks and up to 45% in people from Eastern Africa. In comparison to the other forms of SCD, sickle cell anemia is present in a homozygous form. Individuals are considered to be sickle cell trait carriers when they inherit Hb S from one parent and normal hemoglobin from the other parent, these individuals rarely present with any clinical manifestations (2010). Individuals with SCD inherit the sickle globin gene (HbS) from one parent and a normal (HbA) from the other parent. I believe that teenage boys would find the T shirts and quotes to be slightly too feminine in nature and too expressive for the stigma of their age and gender. I feel that this brand might be more successful if marketed to parents who still shop for their sons, a younger target market perhaps. Tween boys tend to focus on what their peers see as cool and would not feel comfortable stepping out of their comfort zone to wear such an individualized message or brand as Bitter Boys. Tween boys also are not looking for ways to empower themselves through quotes and products. Women are generally more openly emotional and expressive then men which is why the brand and the quotes work so well for them. Taking a Look at Lactation Lactation, as well as the mammary glands by which mothers provide their young with milk, have long been regarded as an exclusive and defining trait of the vertebrate class Mammalia. In fact, Linnaeus himself outfitted our own phylogenetic class with this name because they possess mammae (Gregory 1910). How such complex methods of delivering nourishment to young evolved in the first place has always been a hotly contested topic. Breasts, teats, and nipples are all soft tissue, so they cannot be directly observed in the fossil record. What original structures evolved into mammary glands? Did all mammals have them? Is it possible that our reptilian ancestors (or rather, our common ancestor with modern reptiles) also lactated? This paper examines the work of paleontologists, evolutionary biologists, and geneticists of the last 120 years to try to gain some insight into these questions, and whether they can ever be truly answered. Before delving into the origins of lactation, one must understand the basic progression of mammalian evolution from our last common ancestor with reptiles to the modern placental mammal. The last common ancestors diverged into two groups: synapsids and sauropsids. Synapsids are the ancestors of mammals and their extinct relatives (often called mammal like reptiles) while sauropsids went on to become reptiles and birds (Oftedal 2002). The two clades were distinguished by characteristics of their skulls. Synapsids branched out into many different types, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are varying other factors to include when identifying how this occupation changed what was currently then known as the Dutch East Indies, which includes the somewhat linear and consistently rising changes socially, politically and economically.1 The beginning of regular contact between Europeans and the people of Indonesia began in 1512, but it wasn t until 1800 that the government in the Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies.2 For the duration of Dutch rule, their hold on the Dutch East Indies was weak outside of coastal strongholds but it wasn t until the early 20th century that their lands extend to what is currently recognized to be Indonesia s borders.3 A nationalist movement had been undertaken by the people of Indonesia, however was often suppressed by the Dutch. With this movement beginning in 1908 it wasn t until 1945 until the Nationalist Revolution had begun. Lasting four years, the Dutch were consistently able to maintain industrial assets, towns and major cities but found themselves with the inability to control the countryside.4 The inspiration for this ... • 24. How Did Friedrich And Finer Protect Against The Bureaucracy Taking place in 1940, the Friedrich Finer debate featured the themes of how much discretion to give to bureaucrats, what accountability measures should be in place against bureaucratic incompetence, and if the other branches of government are capable of protecting against the bureaucracy. In debating these, Friedrich and Finer have shaped the conversation around the bureaucracy in the many decades since. When it comes to bureaucratic discretion, Friedrich believed that bureaucrats needed to almost complete discretion about their work. If bureaucrats are experts at their work, then they should be allowed to use their expertise to maximize their work outputs. On the other hand, Finer argued that those checks by the other branches is what prevented the bureaucrats from giving into their poor human nature. Additionally, these checks act to give some democratic control over an otherwise completely undemocratic branch of government. In a democracy, that is completely unacceptable; the judicial branch s final say in how laws are interpreted, congress ability to appropriate agencies budgets and approve nominees, and the president s ability to nominate those nominees is necessary for the bureaucracy to maintain legitimacy with the American public. Whatever lack of expertise the other branches may have about the bureaucracy s work is well worth this legitimacy. From this point it is apparent that her story is going to be different. While she relies on the hard realities of life and is very caught up in the things outside of her, her mind body conscious self is just as active as Tom or Anna s. In fact, it may be even stronger for her because she seems to be more aware of it: She became aware of herself, that she was a separate entity in the midst of an unseparated obscurity, that she must go somewhere, she must become something. The Drug enforcement agency defines a schedule 1 substance as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs are the most dangerous drugs of all the drug schedules with potentially severe psychological or physical dependence. ( Drug Schedules. DEA.gov.) There was no science backing this claim, and when it comes to marijuana neither of those things are true. While society tries to inculcate that success equals winning, or being the best at something, I would argue that losing is what truly plants the seed for the greatest accomplishments in life. A failure is just an opportunity to gain knowledge of what does not work. This knowledge can then be applied in order to accomplish goals in the future. My theory of success, contends that failures should not be a cause for frustration, because they are necessary in order to move forward.
