European Imperialism In Nigeria
Christianity in Africa Nigeria s population is 40% Christian, but it was not always this way. After a
little persuading by European missionaries and British imperialism, more began to believe in
Christianity. Many say Nigeria is the creation of European imperialism. Europeans also brought
Christianity to Nigeria with them. As a British invasion started up in Africa, Nigeria was
revolutionized. European colonies began to scramble for Nigeria and take control. These colonies did
succeed in bringing their religion with them. Many tribes struggles to let go of their ethnic religions,
but soon began to accept Christianity and it expanded throughout Africa. It all began in the 1800s
when Roman Catholic missionaries returned to Nigeria after coming

Importance Of Depository Receipt Is A Negotiable...
INTRODUCTION
The past few decades have witnessed the increased internationalization of various firms through cross
listings on international exchanges. This has been facilitated by market liberalisation, which has led to
greater integration of global securities markets. Cross border listing has become one of the avenues for
the integration of global securities markets.
There are two forms of cross border listing, namely, direct listing and indirect listing. Direct listing
implies that the firm concerned offers ordinary shares to the public. Indirect listing on exchanges is
through Depository Receipts (DRs). Depository receipt is a negotiable certificate issued by a bank in a
domestic country that represent ownership of shares in companies of other countries. Cross listing,
particularly through DRs such as American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) or Global Depositary
Receipts (GDRs), is a popular way of internationalisation among firms from emerging economies. In
addition to Europe and America, International firms are allowed to cross list in other countries through
the DR programme.
There could be several reasons for a domestic company to cross list, such as an expanding investor
base, the desire to improve stock liquidity through its highly liquid secondary market, the increasing
visibility of the company, a growing customer base, and the wish to take advantage of higher
valuations. From the perspective of investors, cross listing mitigates some

The Harms of Underage Alcohol Consumption Essay examples
The Harms of Underage Alcohol Consumption Alcohol use is extremely prevalent in our society.
Young people grow up seeing their parents and other adults make toast of wine and champagne at
special occasions, as well as casually enjoying a few beers at a picnic. Today alcoholic beverages are
frequently as common at business lunches as they are at college frat parties. Underage drinking is a
huge problem which everyone must face. Under age drinking not only has devastating effects on those
who drink but also on our society. ?Young people illegally consume almost 3.6 billion drinks annually
which is 10 million drinks each day.? (http://www.cspinet.org/booze/alcyouth.htm.) Underage
drinking has serious social, health and economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This quick escape can be found in the shape of a bottle. In the eyes of an underage drinker, alcohol is
the cure to all problems, a way to forget all of stress and pressures that are facing them. They feel that
it will numb their pain and continuing to use alcohol will result in maybe another problem, substance
abuse. The effects of underage drinking on society are practically immeasurable. Alcohol use can
effect a teenager?s health, put strains on relationships between family and friends, and can also place
other members of society in danger. Alcohol is involved in nearly one half of all murders, accidental
deaths, suicides, crimes, and fatal automobile accidents.(http://www.cpmcnet.columbia.edu). Alcohol
causes problems in both one?s school and work career. It has a tendency to lower productivity and the
quality of work being done. Economic costs are also an issue when it comes to underage drinking.
Approximately 13 billion dollars each year is spent for the treatment and recovery of alcoholics.
(http://intoww.org) This puts an enormous strain on our economy. It seems unfair that taxpayers
should have to pay out of their own pockets for the problem that teenagers cause. These problems
could be prevented if only teenagers would be more responsible and think about what they are actually
doing, not only to themselves but also to our society. Most teenagers don?t realize that underage
drinking is a crime. It is a first degree

A Famine Primary Source Of The Irish Potato Famine
A Spud Famine Primary Source
More than a million Irish people died during the Irish Potato famine that hit Ireland between 1845 to
1849 (Pollard, pg. 551). Potatoes were the primary diet of the Irish, especially the Irish Lump potato.
When the fungal disease hit, known as potato blight, the Irish potato crops were lost. After reading
primary sources regarding the Irish Potato Famine, the reader can visualize the horrors that the Irish
people endured during the Irish Potatoes Famine including starvation, the physical and the mental
effects that go along with it, the loss of family members, and especially witnessing their children
starve and die. Both Trench and Bennet had the purpose and intent of recording conditions exactly as

Trench s excerpt focused on the housing and the sad, upsetting state of the children to appeal to the
reader. He depicted the inequality between rich and poor illustrated by coffins are only used for the
wealthier. The majority were taken to the grave without any coffin, and buried in their rags: in some
instances, even the rags are taken from the corpse to cover some still living body. Trench describes
seeing children in the home near death and several other children that had died. He describes the
peasant s condition, being pale physical beings. The mother and two children that were still alive had
only one dish of barley for the last four days. Even though his descriptions of what he witnessed may
have been the truth and he was relaying this to the reader, he was known as a ruthless land agent who
broke leases, leveled people s homes and banished the poor. Trench looked upon such schemes as a
cheap and efficient way to improve the estate.... the population decreased by 40.3% during the Trench
years, suggesting that in an attempt to clear the estate to make way for improvements, many people
were forced to leave, receiving little or no money from him (Offalyhistoryarchives.com). Critics said

Pearl Harbor Case Study
5c. Describe the opening moves of each side.
How did the attacking forces move their units across the line of departure?
The attacking forces, 2nd Battalion Raiders, moved their forces through the line of departure via
submarine and rubber boat. The USS Argonaut (SM 1)(EX V4) and USS Nautilus (SS 168)(EX V6)
transported rubber inflatable motor boats to the Makin Atoll (Carlson s Marine Raiders: Makin Island
1942, Gordon L. Rottman 24 25). The transit of the troops took around 9 days from Pearl Harbor due
to its winding path to avoid obvious detection. Submarines held position within 500 yds of the reef
line to deploy troops and rubber boats. The rubber boats were held within the external torpedo storage
of the submarines along with weapons and supplies for the mission (Rottman 43). The twelve rubber
boats from the Argonaut traveled towards the Nautilus, with it s eight boats joining them, and
continued towards the island. Company A (Carlson s Group) had landed on Beach Z (actual) instead of
Beach Y (planned) which was an improvement since they re closer to the target. The Raiders made it
to land but some boats got capsized causing the spread of weapons and supplies along the beach, or
separated from the group. Peatross group that was separated from the main body had advanced
towards objective despite lack of numbers.
How did the defending forces react to the attack?
The natives of the land, that were supposedly working for the Japanese, had welcomed and
hospitalized the Raiders. False information had been given to them, though, when Raiders inquired of
Japanese personnel (Rottman 46 47). The Japanese soldiers had seemingly anticipated the attack or
had been aware of it with no reports of the natives. Japanese soldiers had been deployed close to
where the path and position of the target of the Raiders (Rottman 47). This was most likely due to the
panic friendly fire shots by Raiders which had occurred frequently throughout the Raider s presence.
The Japanese had automobiles and special weaponry, such as flamethrowers, machine guns, etc. to use
on the island against the Raiders as well. The Japanese had also placed camouflaged snipers amongst
the palms in advance to pick off any hiding or unprepared Raider

The Stereotypes Against Tattoos
As time progresses, the stigma against tattooing has evolved, taking on many subject positions
including social class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and age. Each subject position has developed
through the Ancient, Modern, and Postmodern eras. Some subject positions on tattoos, like the five
mentioned before, have invoked anxiety in society across eras, altering the cultural discourse of
contemporary society.
The tattoo fashion statement s origin from the Ancient Era in European cultures was far from
appealing. At that time, tattooing was viewed as a mark of infamy or a moral blot (Caplan 1). This
social blot gave rise to the divisions of social class. On all slaves in the Orient, and on fugitive slaves
in Greece and Rome the stigmata ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One Indian ethnic group even thought [t]attoos [as] the only jewels a girl [could] [take] to her grave
(van Dinter, 119). Many of these ethnicities revered tattooing as a prestigious process, marking
important events in one s life, like coming of age ceremonies and marriage. For instance, in Indian
ethnic culture, women used temporary Henna tattoos during weddings. Ethnicities in India
traditionally used [Henna] for celebrations and right of passage
(http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/newamericans/culturalriches/art_henna.html) for marriages,
coming of age ceremonies, births, or religious festivals. These tattoos were considered auspicious and
were used by only high caste women. This social custom proves that the tattoo s role in social class
still existed across cultures and ethnicities, but its role in this social hierarchy was a positive one,
unlike the branding usage in the western cultures of the Ancient era. Because lower caste women did
not have access to temporary tattooing, many of them permanently tattooed designs on their hands for
their weddings, to still have the auspicious presence of the art on their hands. This separation between
high and low caste women in the same ethnicity is another example that illustrates the intersection of
the subject positions ethnicity and social class. But as time progressed from the Ancient to the
Postmodern era, the social barriers of using Henna in India diminished significantly. In present day,
Henna is one of the many forms of tattooing that has been culturally appropriated and widely used.
Though its ancient roots are still firmly ingrained in Indian society, western society has changed the
cultural discourse on Henna tattoos by transforming it into a form of fashionable, temporary
adornment without any occasion connections , stirring anxiety in many

Now, pick one of those muscles and trace their control from the appropriate brain structure all the way
to the NMJ. Be sure to include all intermediate structures, synapses, plexuses and nerves.
(8 points)
Movement of the deltoid begins in the cerebrum of the brain, but more specifically: in the frontal lobe,
the premotor cortex is relaying instructions to the primary motor cortex. The primary motor cortex
contains the upper motor neurons whose axons will travel down the pyramids of the medulla
oblongata and synapse on lower motor neurons in the anterior gray horns of spinal cord segments C5
C6. From there, the ventral rami of spinal nerves C5 C6 form the superior trunk of the brachial plexus,
which splits into two divisions. We will follow the posterior division that supplies to extensor muscles.
This posterior division then runs into the posterior cord from which the axillary nerve is derived. The
axillary nerve s motor end innervates the deltoid through its neuromuscular junction.

The Poems Of John Keats
Although John Keats didn t live a very long life, he still left a pretty good size mark on literature. This
thought only intrigues many writers and readers to wonder what he could have possibly accomplished
had he not died at such a young age and been able to continue writing. He was born into the working
class and very early in his life developed a reputation for fighting, and it was not until he met one of
his close friends that he became interested in poetry. The other two writers in this section, Byron and
Shelley, were both aristocrats. Clearly Keats was not and Aristocrat considering he was born into the
working class. Even though Keats didn t live a very long life he still encountered many ups and downs
in his early years that led him to write some of the poems that he did. The four poems that we read
from John Keats collection would be On First Looking into Chapman s Homer, When I Have Fears
That I May Cease to Be, Ode to a Nightingale, and Ode on a Grecian Urn. One message from each of
those poems would be ambition, death, mortality, and fame. To begin with, one message from the
poem On First Looking into Chapman s Homer would be ambition. John Keats shows his ambition
and eager in this poem by showing how badly he wanted to become a well known poet. He speaks of
how many ancient literatures that he has read and how he thinks he could be remembered as one of the
best poets to ever live. Much have I traveled in the realms of gold, and many goodly states and

Lack Provision Of Health Services
Adequate provision of health services in low and middle income countries poses a considerable
challenge to governments of the same. Global health policy is currently shifting from centering around
older top down and vertical disease programmes, to more horizontally integrated programmes that are
re focusing on Primary Health Care. Community participation is a popular concept, where
involvement of the community is considered one of the foundational principles of Primary health care
(Bath and Wakerman, 2013). Thus, it is important to understand whether and how communities can
successfully participate in determining how health services are delivered at the local level.
To do so, it is important to begin by understanding what community participation means, which is
what this essay seeks to do first. It will then demonstrate through examples that communities can and
have successfully participated in determining how health services are delivered at the local level. It
will subsequently also show that, despite these apparent successes, it is difficult to assess the effects of
community participation in delivery of health services. The essay will conclude with the assessment
that though there are questions about the exact mechanisms through which community participation
operates, its value in demanding and delivering health services should not be underestimated. The
concept of community participation gained traction in the international arena after the Declaration of

Questions and Answers on A Career as an Engineer
Please, briefly tell me about yourself and your educational background.
I am an ambitious and well driven woman who believes in herself. After finishing my high school l
went to Vaal university of Technology for my diploma, University of Pretoria for my degree in
engineering, and then Sorbonne University for my masters in engineering.
What first draw you to study engineering?
It has always been a passion in my life to work with electricity and electronic devices. When l was
young l used to fix and repair adapters, radios and TVs. Being accepted to the engineering faculty was
just a continuation of the dream that l begun when l was young.
Which year of study was the most challenging, and why?
Probably, my first year was horrible because l was less prepared for university studies. I missed most
classes; fell behind in class, and l was very uncertain about whether l was following the right career
path.
What do you enjoy least or most about engineering?
I hate those long hours figuring out a solution to a problem that seems impossible to decode.
Why should one become an engineer?
Engineering is a challenging, high paying career. If you have up to date engineering skills, jobs are
abundant. Engineering jobs often come with flexible hours, location flexibility, and the hard skills you
learn translate easily to new positions
What are some reasons one should not become an engineer?
In my opinion, you should never take a job simply

How Does Polar Retreat Affect Polar Bears
Glacier retreat will greatly affect polar and aquatic ecosystems and animals. Most arctic life revolves
around the sea and presence of sea ice. Without the presence of ice, most ecosystems will be recreated.
Polar bears are one species in great danger. Polar bears use sea ice as a birthing and hunting ground,
and also use it to travel from one place to another. As glaciers start to disappear, the mother polar bear
has less access to food; therefore, the chance of survival for her and her young is very slim. The polar
bears chance of reproduction becomes less as the glaciers retreat. As the top of the food chain, their
decline will cause negative effects for each level below them (Review Diagram G). The only way for
polar bears to survive, is by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other animals in danger include arctic seals, seabirds, and walruses. Most arctic seal species are
dependent on sea ice for a birthing ground and place to rest. With the decrease in glaciers, these seals
will become extinct since they directly live on the ice or in the water. Southern seals that have adapted
to live on land, will more likely start to migrate north and take over areas that have experienced
serious glacier retreat. This will create greater competition between seals and ultimately lead to
changes in the food web (Arctic Climate Change). Seabirds, such as ivory gulls, will be impacted by
the absence of ice. These birds regularly nest in the mountainous areas which offer protection for their
young. Also, these birds scavenge for food between the cracks or on the surface of the ice. In the past
20 years, ivory gulls in Canada have experienced a population decline of 90% (Arctic Climate
Change). Walruses will also lose their feeding ground once the ice begins to melt farther. Walruses
normally live on the ice edge where clams, their main source of food, is most

A Speech On Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is a term of two words: the first word is Nano and derives from the Greek word
Nanos and it means Dwarf or something very small. The second word is Technology and it means
applied application of knowledge in a certain field. So nanotechnology is the technology of very small
substances, and it specializes in treating the substance on the Nano measure to produce new, useful,
and unique resultants in its properties [22 23].The Nano is a unique measuring unit and from the
physical and mathematical point of view, the Nano equals one part of a billion of the measured unit.
The nanometer (nm) equals a part of a billion part of a meter. Thus, it is 10 9 of a meter. The Nano is

By changing the properties of the liquid phase (e.g. concentration, temperature, pH) adsorbed species
can be released from the surface and transferred back into the liquid phase. This reverse process is
referred to as desorption. Since adsorption is a surface process, the surface area is a key quality
parameter of adsorbents.
Engineering adsorbents are typically highly porous material with surface area in the range between
102 and 103 m2 /g. Their porosity allows realizing such large surfaces as internal surfaces constituted
by the pore walls. In contrast, the external surface is typically below 1 m2 /g and therefore of minor
relevance. As an example, the external surface of powdered activated carbon with a particle density of
0.6 g/cm3 and a particle radius of 0.02 mm is only 0.25 m2 /g.
However, adsorption is one of the promising methods to remove the dye pollutants from aqueous
system completely. It was, therefore, thought worthwhile to develop highly efficient and effective
adsorbents for the removal of dye from the textile

Barttleby s Physical Characters In Bartleby The Scrivener
Directions: Record your answers in paragraph format.
Why do you think Turkey, Nippers, and Ginger Nut are introduced to the reader before Bartleby?
In Bartleby the Scrivener, Melville chooses his order of character introduction in order to illustrate
what kind of man the lawyer is. The entire story depends upon the lawyer s reactions and responses to
Bartleby and upon the reader accepting the lawyer s reactions, responses, and actions as wholly
sincere and in keeping with his character. The descriptions of these characters are also really part of
the setting. The office is cramped and uninspiring, and those who work there could be considered
misfits. Turkey and Nippers together make one effective worker, and Ginger Nuts is nothing but a
glorified errand boy, though he s supposed to be an apprentice. Once we meet them, the tone of the
office is set and helps prepare us for the inimitable Bartleby the scrivener who would prefer not to.
Describe Bartleby s physical characteristics. How is his physical description a foreshadowing of what
happens to him?
Bartleby s physical characteristics foreshadow his death. Bartleby is described as pale and thin. For
Bartleby, his life itself is pointless and he cannot pretend enthusiasm as expressed by his actions. For
example, when he is told to do something his response is I would prefer not to, and when he got fired
from the firm he acted as if nothing happened. His lack of action showed that he didn t care for what

In some countries throughout the world kids are put on tracks dependent upon their careers; some get
to go further in the education system than others. Often times these career tracks are ones chosen for
them based upon the family they were born into and their parents wealth and educational knowledge.
Some countries even do inventory tests in order to place students on a track and decide if they get to
continue in education or if they are required to go straight into the work force. One point Carlos Xabel
Lastra Anadón and Paul E. Peterson bring up in their article is that while we need to learn from
countries such as Korea, Finland, Japan, the Netherlands, and Canada we must not copy exactly what
they are doing but more so do what is best for our educational system (1.) I agree with the point they
have made, I do not believe we should implement all of the educational ideas these countries have. I
believe this because like America s educational system their systems have flaws as well. But instead
we should learn from their mistakes and apply and implement them into our own system as needed. In
doing this step I believe we can make our educational system more successful and proficient in
comparison with these countries.
Furthermore, I think in America the freedom and availability we have here in America has allowed us

Ben Jonson Syntax
Ben Jonson is known for his outstanding poems and plays written in the seventeenth century. He s
capable of putting simple words in a verse and makes them have so much meaning just by the way he
uses them. In the poem His Excuse for Loving, his use of diction, syntax, and tone are used in a way
that lets the reader realize exactly what he means. Jonson s work in this poem is quite simple, but says
so much. He expresses exactly how he feels towards his loved one with the use of certain words that
tie everything together. The language in the poem seems to be somewhat plain. Although it is plain,
the author, Jonson, still manages to put some dazzle inside what is plain. His word choice is simple
throughout each verse, therefore leading to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because Jonson shows his writing in a behavior that is acknowledged and not hated. In other
words, his tone is not angry, sad, or even desperate. Formal is the word that pretty much describes it
the best just like his syntax. Tonal shifts are a minimum in this poem. Actually there is no shift that
changes his actual tone. He says his age does not affect his love, but doesn t go into a sad tone. He
simply stays serious as he was in the beginning. Therefore, the poem is not affected by tonal shifts,

Pepsi Cola As A Carbonated Beverage Essay
Pepsi Cola is a carbonated beverage that is sold by PepsiCo. It is sold in vending machines, stores and
restaurants. This beverage was first produced in the 1890s by Caleb Bradham in New Bern, North
Carolina. The brand was first trademarked in 1903 and seeing that it is still around today in 2016 i
would classify pepsi as a style. I made that conclusion by seeing their sales my go up and down but
pepsi was here long before me and will be here long after me. Pepsi cola is elastic and in an industry
that is mainly dominated by Coca Cola. Although Pepsi and Coke are in constant competition with one
another to gain and maintain the same customers. Seeing that 95% of the United States drinks soft
drinks. This shows the large number of potential customers Pepsi Cola could gain. Pepsi s advertising
constantly has to stay current to appeal to the younger generation. Their target market would be
generation X but also has a large focus on the 12 to 18 year old demographic. At an early stage, Pepsi
comprehended market division and the significance of having shoppers to promote to that aren t bolted
into a particular item yet. Pepsi acknowledged in the 1940s that African Americans were an untapped
specialty advertise. At the time Pepsi could pick up piece of the overall industry by focusing on and
publicizing towards African Americans which they have kept on doing. Today Pepsi showcases its
item to more youthful individuals. The thought behind showcasing towards more youthful

Seed + Mill Case Study
Before Seed + Mill became a business, there weren t many tahini and halvah stores in the United
States. After Lisa Mendelson moved to New York from Israel a few years ago, she found that there
was a shortage of quality tahini and halvah cakes. On a trip back to Israel, Mendelson became inspired
after watching American tourists tasting halvah in an outdoor market. She was flooded with flashbacks
of her childhood eating sesame seed products such as halvah cakes. Passionate about a familiar
product and determined to fill a need in American markets, Mendelson went off to create Seed + Mill
with fellow business partners Rachel Simmons and Monica Molenaar.

Zeus God Of Lightning
Long,Long ago there was a God named Zeus, God of lightning. Zeus loved having the ability of being
able to strike other Gods and Goddesses with his lightning bolts. Whenever Zeus would see a God or
Goddess making a mistake, he would strike them right in the rear end. The Gods that Zeus would
strike frequently were Hermes, messenger god, and Hades, God of riches. Zeus would strike
Goddesses, but not as often as he would strike the two Gods. Whenever Zeus would strike a God or
Goddess he would rarely miss, but whenever he did miss, the bolt would keep traveling until it
traveled through the clouds of the sky human beings lived under. Sometimes when Zeus would miss a
God or Goddess he would get frustrated and would start one lightning bolt after another, scarring and
harming the humans.

The Holy Bible And Holy Torah
Throughout this Report, the writer used both Primary and Secondary research in order to validate the
stated hypothesis. This included one interview with a devout Catholic from the Islands of Fiji (Mar,
Interviewee,13/07/15). Moreover, comprehensive secondary research was gathered from a variety of
books and relevant websites. In particular, the holy Bible and the holy Torah were very useful, as this
main aspects of information gathering denoted a very different and diverse approach to the Initiation

concepts for the particular initiation ritual.

The Role Of Immigrants In Germany
One thing unites Khuê Pham, Özlem Topçu and Alice Bota: They are German citizens and the children
of migrants in a country that has long struggled to define its relationship with foreigners (Lindsey),
these three girls know firsthand what it is like to be a different than everyone around you. Although
they have only ever known Germany as home themselves, German natives see them differently
because their family did not originate in Germany. This real world example attests to this country s
previous outlook on immigration, sometimes even current outlook. There are many different factors
that can contribute to the decision to migrate, and Germany has been a prime location for immigrants.
Population, economics, political indicators, and cultural perspectives are some examples of these
factors. Most immigrants choose Germany for the job opportunities, and arrive as guest workers.
According to the Federal Office of Migration and Refugees, there are a few different circumstances
one may be allowed to enter Germany as a guest worker. An example would be Family reunification .
There are several indicators that explain why Germany is appealing to those looking to relocate, and
these same indicators can drive migrants away from their homeland.

Analysis Of The Phantom Of The Opera
This movie is one I ve came back to often, the acting, music, scenery, and the story itself is what
brought me back. I liked how every actor in this film not only fit their role, but also made it
believable. If they were to recast the actors today, I don t think they could find better actors to fit the
roles. Some of the roles in this are Viscount de Chagny Raoul played by Patrick Wilson, Christine
Daaé played by Emmy Rossum, The Phantom of the Opera Opera Ghost played by Gerard Butler,
these are just the main characters. The role of the Opera Ghost is played by Gerard Butler, his acting
was good which wasn t surprising I have seen some of his other roles and they were all well done also.
What surprised me the most how well he could sing. There any many characters that are seen
throughout the film, some supporting roles include Madame Giry played by Miranda Richardson, Meg
Giry played by Jennifer Ellison, Carlotta Giudicelli played by Minnie Driver, Gilles André played by
Simon Callow, Monsieur Lefèvre played by James Fleet, and Monsieur Reyer played by Murray
Melvin. There are of course extras. This movie is a musical that is mainly drama based, so not only
does it help keep the movie interesting, the music is good enough you could listen to it on its own. The
movie is set in an Paris Opera House named the Opera Populaire in 1870. The Opera Populaire is very

The Controversy Of Homophobia During World War II Essay
In the recent years there has been a growing concern about the impact of homophobia. In the United
States, few endeavors were made to make backing bunches supporting gay and lesbian connections
until after World War II, albeit prewar gay life prospered in urban focuses, for example, Greenwich
Village and Harlem amid the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. The interruptions of World War II
permitted earlier detached gay men and ladies to meet as fighters, war laborers, and different
volunteers evacuated from residential communities and posted around the world. More noteworthy
mindfulness, combined with Senator Joseph McCarthy s examination of gay people holding
government occupations amid the mid 1950s, prompted the primary American based political requests
for reasonable treatment in psychological wellbeing, open strategy, and vocation. Until the passing of
the Sexual Offences Bill in 1967, male homosexual activity was illegal. Gay men were frequently
imprisoned for consensual sex with another man. Lesbianism was not illegal, but was similarly subject
to public disapproval, or ignored. Despite the dangers and difficulties involved, gay men and women
were able to find places to meet. The Minorities Research Group (MRG) was formed in 1964, and
provided isolated lesbians with resources and information about female homosexuality and the
opportunity to meet other women (Allan Horsfall 2014). Through the 1980s, as the gay male
community was decimated by the AIDS epidemic, demands

Interpreting The Matrix through Descartes’s Philosophy Essay
Many ancient philosophers, including Plato, explored metaphysics in relation to reality before
Descartes s in depth questioning of the subject. However, Descartes s views on mind/body dualism
differ greatly from Plato s. As Marleen Rozemond (author of Descartes s Dualism) points out, Plato
believes that the body is simply a vessel for the soul to use, while Descartes provides proof that the
body and soul are interconnected (172). One does not simply use the other; though they are separate,
the mind affects the body and the body affects the mind. Cartesian dualism tells us that although the
whole mind seems to be united to the whole body, I recognize that if a foot or arm or any other part of
the body is cut off, nothing has thereby been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes states that:
Once the foundations of a building are undermined, anything built on them collapses of its own
accord; so I will go straight for the basic principles on which all my former beliefs rested. Whatever I
have up till now accepted as most true I have acquired either from the senses or through the senses.
But from time to time I have found that the senses deceive, and it is prudent never to trust completely
those who have deceived us even once. (384)
Through questioning the knowledge he had always believed to be true, Descartes comes to realize that
many of his basic beliefs were founded on sensual knowledge. This leads him to question his very
existence, and eventually to search for unconditional proof of his existence
Christopher Falzon, philosophy lecturer and author of Philosophy Goes to the Movies and Philosophy
and The Matrix, points out that The Matrix employs Cartesian style skepticism in its attempt to
inundate the viewer in this cyber world ( Philosophy and the Matrix 99). This is seen in Neo s choice
between the red pill and blue pill in The Matrix, which can be likened to Descartes s employment of
the acid test. Neo, a computer hacker, is told that a man named Morpheus can tell him the meaning of
the Matrix, a term that Neo has encountered several times. Upon meeting Morpheus, Neo is given a
choice: he can take a blue pill which will make him forget about his quest to discover the meaning of

The Segregation Of The South
Segregation in the South
Introduction
According to Merriam Webster the word segregation was first known to be used in 1555. It is defined
as the separation or isolation of a race, class, or ethnic group by enforcing or voluntary residence in a
restricted area, by barriers to social intercourse, by separate educational facilities, or by other
discriminatory means.
The United States underwent vast transformations, especially in the South. New political, social, and
economic systems emerged that transformed the South from a rural, slave based society, to an
increasingly urban, industrialized, free labor society. The changes to the social, political, and
economic landscape of the South prompted an unprecedented era of racial violence throughout the
region (Jett, p.40). The Southern states deemed slavery was crucial to safeguard white superiority.
Most Southern whites who had aspirations of becoming a very prominent slave owner, were terrified
of a society with considerable numbers of African Americans who were not slaves. Segregation moved
by way of public accommodations, all the way through the South. DeFina Hannon (2011) and others
showed daily interactions of whites and blacks in the South, during reconstruction of the south
identified racial prejudices were increasing steadily, after the Civil War and especially during the 1880
s. Town after town across the south flatly banned African Americans within their city limits after dark.

The Defeat of Many by One Essay
The Defeat of Many by One
In The Moor s Last Sigh, Salman Rushdie uses the complex and changing character of the Moor to
represent a complex and changing image of India. By making the eclectic family history of the Da
Gama Zogoiby family the central theme in the first two parts of the novel, Rushdie portrays India as a
culturally and religiously pluralistic society. This pluralistic society is layered by violence caused by
the corruption of multiplicity by various characters and the threat of Hindu fundamentalism. As
pluralism is defeated by fascism in Part Three of the novel, the nature of the violence changes
drastically and is symbolized by the Moor s significant character change: The Moor whose tragedy the

The Zogoiby s diverse history entails attempts to embrace many of these ideals. The eclectic cultural
backgrounds of the Zogoiby family are representative of pluralism in India. The Da Gamas are
Portuguese Catholics while the Zogoibys are Moorish Jews. All of the Moor s ancestors blatantly
reject religion and embrace secularism: an arguably important component of pluralism. When
Camoens went to see Gandhi speak, he told his wife Belle, I hear nothing. I had seen India s beauty in
that crowd with its soda water and cucumber but with that God stuff I got scared (Rushdie 55).
Another example of pluralism within the Zogoiby family is Aurora s artwork, especially her childhood
paintings in which she strives to represent the variety and multiplicity in the vision of the world and
the vision of India. As Aurora ages, however, her childhood visions of pluralism are significantly
changed.
Although Aurora s later paintings also embrace pluralism, they reveal possible catastrophe: A place
where worlds collide, flow in and out of one another, and washofy away. Place where an air man can
drowno in water, or else grow gills; where a water creature can get drunk, but also chokeofy on air.

Is Lady Macbeth A Monster
Is She a Monster?
One of the main characters in The Tragedy of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, has always been an object of
intense criticism. She is sometimes regarded to as cruel and abhorrent, but there is indication that
Shakespeare did not intend for her to be regarded so harshly. By assessing her character in relation to
her actions, we can see that Shakespeare possibly wanted Lady Macbeth to be judged by association
with Macbeth. What appears to be ruthlessness is really her dedication to her husband. Macbeth
desperately wants the throne, so Lady Macbeth does too. All her actions are done to get her husband,
as well as herself, on the throne.
Lady Macbeth plays the role of one who gives the incentive to Macbeth, as well as one who supports
him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shortly after having Banquo slain, Macbeth believes he sees his ghost. He begins to speak to the
ghost, which is not perceptible to the others. Realizing that her spouse might say something linking
him with the murders of Duncan and Banquo, Lady Macbeth makes justifications for his behavior. She
says to the lords, My lord is often thus, / And hath been from his youth. Pray you, keep seat. / The fit
is momentary; (III.iv.53 55). She attempts to hide her husband s insanity while also standing up for
him. The death of Lady Macbeth is vital in understanding her mental ailment. At the commencement
of the play she appeared to be unyielding and insensitive to all feelings, but as the play progressed her
morality continued to overcome her. She wears down to a point where she is disheartened, and feels
the only answer is suicide. This self destruction shows that Lady Macbeth has emotions, and qualms
all her wrongdoings. Although regarded by some as fiendishly cruel and monstrous, Lady Macbeth is
not intended to be thought of in that way. Her demise is proof that she has a sense of right and wrong,
and that she possesses a sense of grief and

fact that his perception of the underclass world is not prejudiced or unnecessarily biased as one can

The buildings were dark, small and gloomy on the inside and due to the fact that the majority of the
movie took place in the nighttime hours and it was stormy more than not, the outside was just as
gloomy as the inside. The lighting was minimal as it would have been back then bringing mood with
it. The foreshadowing of the stormy weather worked in making this movie what it was, the rain
seemed to let you know when something was coming. As much as the wilderness scenery was
beautiful, I found it downplayed by the drab colors of the costumes and the non use of color
throughout the entire film. It seemed as though the only time color was used was determined by what
that particular scene was about. For instance, as English Bob came into town the only item of color
was the drab red of the stagecoach, so we knew whoever was in that stagecoach was going to become
an important character to a scene coming up, everything else was a muted earth tone of tan, brown,
green and blue. As stated in our text a director may simply let their settings just be a backdrop and let
the action of that scene take over. (Boggs Petrie, 2008, pg. 374) This was exactly how this movie was
told; it focused on the story instead of glamorizing it with colorful costumes and scenery. We needed
to see the drabness of the subject in the muted colors of the movie. Another scene that showed a pop
of color was that of William (Eastwood) and Ned (Freeman) were having a conversation where

Analysis Of On The Subway

Ms. Kristen
ENGL 101
17 September 2015
Textual Analysis Essay #1
Sharon Olds, poet of on the subway depicts a situation where a white female makes observations and
internal thoughts about a black male that she witnesses on a subway that Olds describes as
representing tension between the white and black races. The black teenage male possibly portrays not
just one black teen, but the entire race as a whole. He represents the entire race. Olds uses
enjambments, powerful imagery, as well as figurative language, specifically metaphors, in order to
point out the stereotypical differences and tensions between races in today s community and the bigger
picture of the common stereotype of Caucasian people being above the African American people on
the socio economic ladder. Her forceful tone reflects the severity and prevalence of this harsh
commonly seen contrast between the two races.
Enjambments can be utilized for a variety of different reasons in order to change the way the reader
analyzes and thinks about the poem. A basic reason to use enjambments would be to make the lines of
the poem look more even, but in this poem they are used for a little more reasoning. One example of a
critical and essential enjambment in the poem that helps Olds prove her purpose exists when she says I

Thomas Paine And His Father
Philosopher Thomas Paine Thomas Paine was born in Norfolk, England on January 29, 1737 to a
middle income family. His father was a Quaker while his mother was an Anglican, therefore, constant
family arguments about religion became part of Thomas life (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy 2).
He did not have much of formal education as he quit schooling at the age of thirteen years and began
working for his father. He was baptized in the Anglican Church that his mother attended. His father
had forbidden him from learning the Latin language while he was in school though he wanted to learn
it. His father specialized in craft staymaking and this was the skill that Thomas learned while working
for his father (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy 2). Thomas had tried running away from home
twice, failing in his first escape, but was successful in the second. He escaped to London and then
went to Margate where he continued to work as a craft staymaker. He also preached in a church called
Methodist persuasion. It was during this time that he married Mary Lambert who died during
childbirth (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy 2). Several incidents had a significant impact on the
life of Thomas such as working as an officer in an excise service, teaching in a school in London, as
well as being appointed a member of the debating society at the Headstrong Club. Thomas later

Understanding Pro Social Behaviour Among Humans ( Cikara )
The ability for an individual to recognize another s suffering and experience the same emotions to
some extent is common in order to promote pro social behaviour among humans (Cikara, Bruneau,
Van Bavel, Saxe, 2014). This ability to empathize with others begins early on and is motivated by the
need to alleviate the distress in another when they are suffering. As noted by de Waal (2008), empathy
occurs quickly and automatically as a way to respond to the emotional states of others, in turn being a
major part of social interactions, coordinated activity, and cooperation toward shared goals. Thus, de
Waal (2008) discusses the three different levels of empathy, among which are emotional contagion,
sympathetic concern, and empathic perspective taking. Firstly, emotional contagion is simply about
automatic sharing as the individual takes on the emotional state of another even without any
understanding of the other (de Waal, 2008). Next, de Waal (2008) suggests sympathetic concern is
when an individual attempts to understand and reduce distress in the other (i.e. comforting behaviour),
as there is knowledge that the response is about the other. Lastly, empathic perspective taking occurs
when an individual is dependent on imagination and mental state attribution as it is entirely about the
other and separate from the self (de Waal, 2008).
There is much research done to suggest that there are failures in peoples ability to empathize (Cikara
et al. 2014; Brown, Bradley, Lang,

Difference Between Guilbert And Ivanhoe
1. Ivanhoe is chivalrous, where Brian de Bois Guilbert is far from it. Ivanhoe treats women right, like
human beings not things. Brian de Bois Guilbert treats women like they are just things, like a cat

Guilbert is a templar, but he is far from being a saint.* Brian de Bois Guilbert tries to get Rebecca to

  • 3. Importance Of Depository Receipt Is A Negotiable... INTRODUCTION The past few decades have witnessed the increased internationalization of various firms through cross listings on international exchanges. This has been facilitated by market liberalisation, which has led to greater integration of global securities markets. Cross border listing has become one of the avenues for the integration of global securities markets. There are two forms of cross border listing, namely, direct listing and indirect listing. Direct listing implies that the firm concerned offers ordinary shares to the public. Indirect listing on exchanges is through Depository Receipts (DRs). Depository receipt is a negotiable certificate issued by a bank in a domestic country that represent ownership of shares in companies of other countries. Cross listing, particularly through DRs such as American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) or Global Depositary Receipts (GDRs), is a popular way of internationalisation among firms from emerging economies. In addition to Europe and America, International firms are allowed to cross list in other countries through the DR programme. There could be several reasons for a domestic company to cross list, such as an expanding investor base, the desire to improve stock liquidity through its highly liquid secondary market, the increasing visibility of the company, a growing customer base, and the wish to take advantage of higher valuations. From the perspective of investors, cross listing mitigates some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Harms of Underage Alcohol Consumption Essay examples The Harms of Underage Alcohol Consumption Alcohol use is extremely prevalent in our society. Young people grow up seeing their parents and other adults make toast of wine and champagne at special occasions, as well as casually enjoying a few beers at a picnic. Today alcoholic beverages are frequently as common at business lunches as they are at college frat parties. Underage drinking is a huge problem which everyone must face. Under age drinking not only has devastating effects on those who drink but also on our society. ?Young people illegally consume almost 3.6 billion drinks annually which is 10 million drinks each day.? (http://www.cspinet.org/booze/alcyouth.htm.) Underage drinking has serious social, health and economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This quick escape can be found in the shape of a bottle. In the eyes of an underage drinker, alcohol is the cure to all problems, a way to forget all of stress and pressures that are facing them. They feel that it will numb their pain and continuing to use alcohol will result in maybe another problem, substance abuse. The effects of underage drinking on society are practically immeasurable. Alcohol use can effect a teenager?s health, put strains on relationships between family and friends, and can also place other members of society in danger. Alcohol is involved in nearly one half of all murders, accidental deaths, suicides, crimes, and fatal automobile accidents.(http://www.cpmcnet.columbia.edu). Alcohol causes problems in both one?s school and work career. It has a tendency to lower productivity and the quality of work being done. Economic costs are also an issue when it comes to underage drinking. Approximately 13 billion dollars each year is spent for the treatment and recovery of alcoholics. (http://intoww.org) This puts an enormous strain on our economy. It seems unfair that taxpayers should have to pay out of their own pockets for the problem that teenagers cause. These problems could be prevented if only teenagers would be more responsible and think about what they are actually doing, not only to themselves but also to our society. Most teenagers don?t realize that underage drinking is a crime. It is a first degree ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Famine Primary Source Of The Irish Potato Famine A Spud Famine Primary Source More than a million Irish people died during the Irish Potato famine that hit Ireland between 1845 to 1849 (Pollard, pg. 551). Potatoes were the primary diet of the Irish, especially the Irish Lump potato. When the fungal disease hit, known as potato blight, the Irish potato crops were lost. After reading primary sources regarding the Irish Potato Famine, the reader can visualize the horrors that the Irish people endured during the Irish Potatoes Famine including starvation, the physical and the mental effects that go along with it, the loss of family members, and especially witnessing their children starve and die. Both Trench and Bennet had the purpose and intent of recording conditions exactly as they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Trench s excerpt focused on the housing and the sad, upsetting state of the children to appeal to the reader. He depicted the inequality between rich and poor illustrated by coffins are only used for the wealthier. The majority were taken to the grave without any coffin, and buried in their rags: in some instances, even the rags are taken from the corpse to cover some still living body. Trench describes seeing children in the home near death and several other children that had died. He describes the peasant s condition, being pale physical beings. The mother and two children that were still alive had only one dish of barley for the last four days. Even though his descriptions of what he witnessed may have been the truth and he was relaying this to the reader, he was known as a ruthless land agent who broke leases, leveled people s homes and banished the poor. Trench looked upon such schemes as a cheap and efficient way to improve the estate.... the population decreased by 40.3% during the Trench years, suggesting that in an attempt to clear the estate to make way for improvements, many people were forced to leave, receiving little or no money from him (Offalyhistoryarchives.com). Critics said of Trench, Even at his worst he gave his tenants the care that a good stock breeder gives to his stock (Irishtimes.com). • 6. Pearl Harbor Case Study 5c. Describe the opening moves of each side. How did the attacking forces move their units across the line of departure? The attacking forces, 2nd Battalion Raiders, moved their forces through the line of departure via submarine and rubber boat. The USS Argonaut (SM 1)(EX V4) and USS Nautilus (SS 168)(EX V6) transported rubber inflatable motor boats to the Makin Atoll (Carlson s Marine Raiders: Makin Island 1942, Gordon L. Rottman 24 25). The transit of the troops took around 9 days from Pearl Harbor due to its winding path to avoid obvious detection. Submarines held position within 500 yds of the reef line to deploy troops and rubber boats. The rubber boats were held within the external torpedo storage of the submarines along with weapons and supplies for the mission (Rottman 43). The twelve rubber boats from the Argonaut traveled towards the Nautilus, with it s eight boats joining them, and continued towards the island. Company A (Carlson s Group) had landed on Beach Z (actual) instead of Beach Y (planned) which was an improvement since they re closer to the target. The Raiders made it to land but some boats got capsized causing the spread of weapons and supplies along the beach, or separated from the group. Peatross group that was separated from the main body had advanced towards objective despite lack of numbers. How did the defending forces react to the attack? The natives of the land, that were supposedly working for the Japanese, had welcomed and hospitalized the Raiders. False information had been given to them, though, when Raiders inquired of Japanese personnel (Rottman 46 47). The Japanese soldiers had seemingly anticipated the attack or had been aware of it with no reports of the natives. Japanese soldiers had been deployed close to where the path and position of the target of the Raiders (Rottman 47). This was most likely due to the panic friendly fire shots by Raiders which had occurred frequently throughout the Raider s presence. • 7. The Stereotypes Against Tattoos As time progresses, the stigma against tattooing has evolved, taking on many subject positions including social class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and age. Each subject position has developed through the Ancient, Modern, and Postmodern eras. Some subject positions on tattoos, like the five mentioned before, have invoked anxiety in society across eras, altering the cultural discourse of contemporary society. The tattoo fashion statement s origin from the Ancient Era in European cultures was far from appealing. At that time, tattooing was viewed as a mark of infamy or a moral blot (Caplan 1). This social blot gave rise to the divisions of social class. On all slaves in the Orient, and on fugitive slaves in Greece and Rome the stigmata ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One Indian ethnic group even thought [t]attoos [as] the only jewels a girl [could] [take] to her grave (van Dinter, 119). Many of these ethnicities revered tattooing as a prestigious process, marking important events in one s life, like coming of age ceremonies and marriage. For instance, in Indian ethnic culture, women used temporary Henna tattoos during weddings. Ethnicities in India traditionally used [Henna] for celebrations and right of passage (http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/newamericans/culturalriches/art_henna.html) for marriages, coming of age ceremonies, births, or religious festivals. These tattoos were considered auspicious and were used by only high caste women. This social custom proves that the tattoo s role in social class still existed across cultures and ethnicities, but its role in this social hierarchy was a positive one, unlike the branding usage in the western cultures of the Ancient era. Because lower caste women did not have access to temporary tattooing, many of them permanently tattooed designs on their hands for their weddings, to still have the auspicious presence of the art on their hands. This separation between high and low caste women in the same ethnicity is another example that illustrates the intersection of the subject positions ethnicity and social class. But as time progressed from the Ancient to the Postmodern era, the social barriers of using Henna in India diminished significantly. In present day, Henna is one of the many forms of tattooing that has been culturally appropriated and widely used. Though its ancient roots are still firmly ingrained in Indian society, western society has changed the cultural discourse on Henna tattoos by transforming it into a form of fashionable, temporary adornment without any occasion connections , stirring anxiety in many ... The primary motor cortex contains the upper motor neurons whose axons will travel down the pyramids of the medulla oblongata and synapse on lower motor neurons in the anterior gray horns of spinal cord segments C5 C6. From there, the ventral rami of spinal nerves C5 C6 form the superior trunk of the brachial plexus, which splits into two divisions. • 9. The Poems Of John Keats Although John Keats didn t live a very long life, he still left a pretty good size mark on literature. This thought only intrigues many writers and readers to wonder what he could have possibly accomplished had he not died at such a young age and been able to continue writing. He was born into the working class and very early in his life developed a reputation for fighting, and it was not until he met one of his close friends that he became interested in poetry. The other two writers in this section, Byron and Shelley, were both aristocrats. Clearly Keats was not and Aristocrat considering he was born into the working class. Even though Keats didn t live a very long life he still encountered many ups and downs in his early years that led him to write some of the poems that he did. The four poems that we read from John Keats collection would be On First Looking into Chapman s Homer, When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be, Ode to a Nightingale, and Ode on a Grecian Urn. One message from each of those poems would be ambition, death, mortality, and fame. To begin with, one message from the poem On First Looking into Chapman s Homer would be ambition. John Keats shows his ambition and eager in this poem by showing how badly he wanted to become a well known poet. Global health policy is currently shifting from centering around older top down and vertical disease programmes, to more horizontally integrated programmes that are re focusing on Primary Health Care. Community participation is a popular concept, where involvement of the community is considered one of the foundational principles of Primary health care (Bath and Wakerman, 2013). Thus, it is important to understand whether and how communities can successfully participate in determining how health services are delivered at the local level. To do so, it is important to begin by understanding what community participation means, which is what this essay seeks to do first. It will then demonstrate through examples that communities can and have successfully participated in determining how health services are delivered at the local level. It will subsequently also show that, despite these apparent successes, it is difficult to assess the effects of community participation in delivery of health services. The essay will conclude with the assessment that though there are questions about the exact mechanisms through which community participation operates, its value in demanding and delivering health services should not be underestimated. • 28. The Controversy Of Homophobia During World War II Essay In the recent years there has been a growing concern about the impact of homophobia. In the United States, few endeavors were made to make backing bunches supporting gay and lesbian connections until after World War II, albeit prewar gay life prospered in urban focuses, for example, Greenwich Village and Harlem amid the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. The interruptions of World War II permitted earlier detached gay men and ladies to meet as fighters, war laborers, and different volunteers evacuated from residential communities and posted around the world. More noteworthy mindfulness, combined with Senator Joseph McCarthy s examination of gay people holding government occupations amid the mid 1950s, prompted the primary American based political requests for reasonable treatment in psychological wellbeing, open strategy, and vocation. Until the passing of the Sexual Offences Bill in 1967, male homosexual activity was illegal. Gay men were frequently imprisoned for consensual sex with another man. Lesbianism was not illegal, but was similarly subject to public disapproval, or ignored. Despite the dangers and difficulties involved, gay men and women were able to find places to meet. The Minorities Research Group (MRG) was formed in 1964, and provided isolated lesbians with resources and information about female homosexuality and the opportunity to meet other women (Allan Horsfall 2014). • 29. Interpreting The Matrix through Descartes’s Philosophy Essay Many ancient philosophers, including Plato, explored metaphysics in relation to reality before Descartes s in depth questioning of the subject. However, Descartes s views on mind/body dualism differ greatly from Plato s. As Marleen Rozemond (author of Descartes s Dualism) points out, Plato believes that the body is simply a vessel for the soul to use, while Descartes provides proof that the body and soul are interconnected (172). One does not simply use the other; though they are separate, the mind affects the body and the body affects the mind. Cartesian dualism tells us that although the whole mind seems to be united to the whole body, I recognize that if a foot or arm or any other part of the body is cut off, nothing has thereby been ... Descartes states that: Once the foundations of a building are undermined, anything built on them collapses of its own accord; so I will go straight for the basic principles on which all my former beliefs rested. Whatever I have up till now accepted as most true I have acquired either from the senses or through the senses. But from time to time I have found that the senses deceive, and it is prudent never to trust completely those who have deceived us even once. (384) Through questioning the knowledge he had always believed to be true, Descartes comes to realize that many of his basic beliefs were founded on sensual knowledge. This leads him to question his very existence, and eventually to search for unconditional proof of his existence Christopher Falzon, philosophy lecturer and author of Philosophy Goes to the Movies and Philosophy and The Matrix, points out that The Matrix employs Cartesian style skepticism in its attempt to inundate the viewer in this cyber world ( Philosophy and the Matrix 99). This is seen in Neo s choice between the red pill and blue pill in The Matrix, which can be likened to Descartes s employment of the acid test. Neo, a computer hacker, is told that a man named Morpheus can tell him the meaning of the Matrix, a term that Neo has encountered several times. Upon meeting Morpheus, Neo is given a choice: he can take a blue pill which will make him forget about his quest to discover the meaning of the Matrix, or he can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. The Segregation Of The South Segregation in the South Introduction According to Merriam Webster the word segregation was first known to be used in 1555. It is defined as the separation or isolation of a race, class, or ethnic group by enforcing or voluntary residence in a restricted area, by barriers to social intercourse, by separate educational facilities, or by other discriminatory means. The United States underwent vast transformations, especially in the South. New political, social, and economic systems emerged that transformed the South from a rural, slave based society, to an increasingly urban, industrialized, free labor society. The changes to the social, political, and economic landscape of the South prompted an unprecedented era of racial violence throughout the region (Jett, p.40). The Southern states deemed slavery was crucial to safeguard white superiority. Most Southern whites who had aspirations of becoming a very prominent slave owner, were terrified of a society with considerable numbers of African Americans who were not slaves. Segregation moved by way of public accommodations, all the way through the South. DeFina Hannon (2011) and others showed daily interactions of whites and blacks in the South, during reconstruction of the south identified racial prejudices were increasing steadily, after the Civil War and especially during the 1880 s. • 32. The Defeat of Many by One Essay The Defeat of Many by One In The Moor s Last Sigh, Salman Rushdie uses the complex and changing character of the Moor to represent a complex and changing image of India. By making the eclectic family history of the Da Gama Zogoiby family the central theme in the first two parts of the novel, Rushdie portrays India as a culturally and religiously pluralistic society. This pluralistic society is layered by violence caused by the corruption of multiplicity by various characters and the threat of Hindu fundamentalism. As pluralism is defeated by fascism in Part Three of the novel, the nature of the violence changes drastically and is symbolized by the Moor s significant character change: The Moor whose tragedy the tragedy of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Zogoiby s diverse history entails attempts to embrace many of these ideals. The eclectic cultural backgrounds of the Zogoiby family are representative of pluralism in India. The Da Gamas are Portuguese Catholics while the Zogoibys are Moorish Jews. All of the Moor s ancestors blatantly reject religion and embrace secularism: an arguably important component of pluralism. When Camoens went to see Gandhi speak, he told his wife Belle, I hear nothing. I had seen India s beauty in that crowd with its soda water and cucumber but with that God stuff I got scared (Rushdie 55). Another example of pluralism within the Zogoiby family is Aurora s artwork, especially her childhood paintings in which she strives to represent the variety and multiplicity in the vision of the world and the vision of India. As Aurora ages, however, her childhood visions of pluralism are significantly changed. Although Aurora s later paintings also embrace pluralism, they reveal possible catastrophe: A place where worlds collide, flow in and out of one another, and washofy away. Place where an air man can drowno in water, or else grow gills; where a water creature can get drunk, but also chokeofy on air. • 33. Is Lady Macbeth A Monster Is She a Monster? One of the main characters in The Tragedy of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, has always been an object of intense criticism. She is sometimes regarded to as cruel and abhorrent, but there is indication that Shakespeare did not intend for her to be regarded so harshly. By assessing her character in relation to her actions, we can see that Shakespeare possibly wanted Lady Macbeth to be judged by association with Macbeth. What appears to be ruthlessness is really her dedication to her husband. Macbeth desperately wants the throne, so Lady Macbeth does too. All her actions are done to get her husband, as well as herself, on the throne. Lady Macbeth plays the role of one who gives the incentive to Macbeth, as well as one who supports him. ... Realizing that her spouse might say something linking him with the murders of Duncan and Banquo, Lady Macbeth makes justifications for his behavior. She says to the lords, My lord is often thus, / And hath been from his youth. Pray you, keep seat. / The fit is momentary; (III.iv.53 55). She attempts to hide her husband s insanity while also standing up for him. The death of Lady Macbeth is vital in understanding her mental ailment. At the commencement of the play she appeared to be unyielding and insensitive to all feelings, but as the play progressed her morality continued to overcome her. She wears down to a point where she is disheartened, and feels the only answer is suicide. This self destruction shows that Lady Macbeth has emotions, and qualms all her wrongdoings. It has a basic theme that we are still making movies about today, justice and what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in our search for it. It is a story of a journey that one man has to make in order for him to care for his children but it ends up being so much more of a journey than he anticipates. The buildings were dark, small and gloomy on the inside and due to the fact that the majority of the movie took place in the nighttime hours and it was stormy more than not, the outside was just as gloomy as the inside. The lighting was minimal as it would have been back then bringing mood with it. The foreshadowing of the stormy weather worked in making this movie what it was, the rain seemed to let you know when something was coming. As much as the wilderness scenery was beautiful, I found it downplayed by the drab colors of the costumes and the non use of color throughout the entire film. It seemed as though the only time color was used was determined by what that particular scene was about. For instance, as English Bob came into town the only item of color was the drab red of the stagecoach, so we knew whoever was in that stagecoach was going to become an important character to a scene coming up, everything else was a muted earth tone of tan, brown, green and blue. As stated in our text a director may simply let their settings just be a backdrop and let the action of that scene take over. (Boggs Petrie, 2008, pg. 374) This was exactly how this movie was told; it focused on the story instead of glamorizing it with colorful costumes and scenery. We needed to see the drabness of the subject in the muted colors of the movie. Another scene that showed a pop of color was that of William (Eastwood) and Ned (Freeman) were having a conversation where William was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of On The Subway Jake Lipschutz Lipschutz 1 Ms. Kristen ENGL 101 17 September 2015 Textual Analysis Essay #1 Sharon Olds, poet of on the subway depicts a situation where a white female makes observations and internal thoughts about a black male that she witnesses on a subway that Olds describes as representing tension between the white and black races. The black teenage male possibly portrays not just one black teen, but the entire race as a whole. He represents the entire race. Olds uses enjambments, powerful imagery, as well as figurative language, specifically metaphors, in order to point out the stereotypical differences and tensions between races in today s community and the bigger picture of the common stereotype of Caucasian people being above the African American people on the socio economic ladder. Her forceful tone reflects the severity and prevalence of this harsh commonly seen contrast between the two races. Enjambments can be utilized for a variety of different reasons in order to change the way the reader analyzes and thinks about the poem. A basic reason to use enjambments would be to make the lines of the poem look more even, but in this poem they are used for a little more reasoning. His father was a Quaker while his mother was an Anglican, therefore, constant family arguments about religion became part of Thomas life (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy 2). He did not have much of formal education as he quit schooling at the age of thirteen years and began working for his father. He was baptized in the Anglican Church that his mother attended. His father had forbidden him from learning the Latin language while he was in school though he wanted to learn it. His father specialized in craft staymaking and this was the skill that Thomas learned while working for his father (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy 2). Thomas had tried running away from home twice, failing in his first escape, but was successful in the second. • 40. Understanding Pro Social Behaviour Among Humans ( Cikara ) The ability for an individual to recognize another s suffering and experience the same emotions to some extent is common in order to promote pro social behaviour among humans (Cikara, Bruneau, Van Bavel, Saxe, 2014). This ability to empathize with others begins early on and is motivated by the need to alleviate the distress in another when they are suffering. As noted by de Waal (2008), empathy occurs quickly and automatically as a way to respond to the emotional states of others, in turn being a major part of social interactions, coordinated activity, and cooperation toward shared goals. Thus, de Waal (2008) discusses the three different levels of empathy, among which are emotional contagion, sympathetic concern, and empathic perspective taking. Firstly, emotional contagion is simply about automatic sharing as the individual takes on the emotional state of another even without any understanding of the other (de Waal, 2008). Next, de Waal (2008) suggests sympathetic concern is when an individual attempts to understand and reduce distress in the other (i.e. comforting behaviour), as there is knowledge that the response is about the other. Lastly, empathic perspective taking occurs when an individual is dependent on imagination and mental state attribution as it is entirely about the other and separate from the self (de Waal, 2008). There is much research done to suggest that there are failures in peoples ability to empathize (Cikara et al. 2014; Brown, Bradley, Lang, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
