Structuralism focused on breaking down mental processes
into the most basic components. The structuralist used
techniques such as introspection to analyze the inner
processes of the human mind
FUNCTIONALISM
CHIEF ADVOCATES: WILLIAM JAMES, JOHN DEWY.
Functionalism formed as a reaction to structuralism .Rather
than focusing on the elements of consciousness ,
functionalist focused on the purpose of consciousness and
behavior.
They also emphasized on individual differences, which had
profound impact on education.
BEHAVIORISM
Behaviorism rose during early 20th century
CHIEF ADVOCATES : IVAN PAVLOV ,JOHN WATSON $ B.F
SKINNER
Behaviorism holds that subject matter of human psychology is
the behavior of the human being
It shows that psychology a pure scientific discipline by focusing
purely on observable behavior
GESTALT PSYCHOLOGY
– Originating in the work of Max Wertheimer, Gestalt
psychology formed partially as a response to the
structuralism of Wilhelm Wundt.
– Gestalt psychology is a school of psychology based upon
the idea that we experience things as unified wholes.
PSYCHOANALYTICAL
SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
– KEY PROPONENTS : SIGMUND FREUD
– This school of thought emphasized the influence of
the unconscious mind on behavior.
– Freud believed that the human mind was composed of
three elements: the id, the ego, and the superego
THE HUMANISTIC SCHOOL
OF THOUGHT
– KEY PROPONENTS : ABRAHAM MASLOW, CARL ROGERS
– Humanistic psychology developed as a response to
psychoanalysis and behaviorism. Humanistic psychology
instead focused on individual free will, personal growth
and the concept of self-actualization

– Cognitive psychology is the school of psychology that
studies mental processes including how people think,
perceive, remember and learn.
NATURE OF EDUCATIONAL
PSYCHOLOGY
– It is a science
– It is a natural science
– It is a social science
– It gives the knowledge of nature of a child
– It presents principles of educational procedures
– Gives a knowledge of growth and development of a child
– Gives understanding of the principles of training
FUNCTIONS OF
EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
– To afford a thorough knowledge of a child
– To provide understanding of aims of education
– To provide understanding of scientific procedures
– To provide understanding of principles governing learning
– To make understand the learning theories
– To make us know how to prevent maladjustments

  • 5. FUNCTIONALISM CHIEF ADVOCATES: WILLIAM JAMES, JOHN DEWY. Functionalism formed as a reaction to structuralism .Rather than focusing on the elements of consciousness , functionalist focused on the purpose of consciousness and behavior. They also emphasized on individual differences, which had profound impact on education.

  • 12. GESTALT PSYCHOLOGY – Originating in the work of Max Wertheimer, Gestalt psychology formed partially as a response to the structuralism of Wilhelm Wundt. – Gestalt psychology is a school of psychology based upon the idea that we experience things as unified wholes.
