Year Round Education Essay
Year Round Education
For more than twenty years the educational and economic benefits of year round schooling have been
debated in the United States. Experts agree that year round schooling may not be the answer to the
problems of all school districts. However in more than 205 districts nation wide, problems have been
resolved by year round schooling. First I need to explain that this is different from extending the
school year; on a year round schedule, students attend school the same number of days 180 as students
on the traditional nine month calendar. The difference is that year round education (YRE) students
have several short vacations rather than one three month summer break. Most year round schools
operate on a multi track ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These countries typically require longer instructional days and more of them than most American
schools, where the eight hour per day, 180 day a year model is standard (Worsnop,96). This type of
schooling may be the answer to the decades old concern that American students are being ill prepared
to compete with their counterparts overseas. By the most objective measure, test scores, year round
education seems to be working. For example, before switching to its new schedule, Socorro schools
had some of the lowest test scores in the country. Now Socorro students outscore the state average on
the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (Blackman,99) For many school administrators, the most
persuasive argument in favor of YRE is that it offers a cost effective way of relieving classroom
overcrowding. Instead of renting commercial space, portable classrooms or constructing new schools
administrators can enlarge the capacity of existing facilities by converting them to year round
operation. Implementing a year round calendar extends the capacity of a school by 33 percent,
according to NAYRE (National Association for Year Round Education.) The Oxnard Elementary
School District is considered the pioneer of year round educational systems. Oxnard first reorganized
their schedule in 1976. The driving forces behind the updated schedule were the increasing number of
students in the buildings and lack of funds. Oxnard has had success with this arrangement. Building

Arther Miller
Come along as an adventure through time takes launch. From the interim of Arthur Miller s birth and
death, he wrote some of America s greatest plays which are known all around the world. This world
renowned screenwriter and playwright is arguably considered the best playwright of the 20th century.
We start our journey here on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York where Miller was born. Arther
Miller was the son of Isidore and Augusta, a Polish and Jewish Immigrant family who owned a
flourishing manufacturing business. The miller family got hit hard during the Wall Street Crash of
1929 nearly losing everything. Arther Miller worked hard after he graduated high school, so he would
be able to pay for his collage tuition at the University of Michigan. It was at Michigan that he wrote
his first play, No Villain. This play won him the school s Avery Hopwood Award and sparked the
beginning of his successful career as a playwright. The beginning of Miller s playwright career came
out with a boom with, All My Sons, which debuted on Broadway in 1947. This play won Miller his
first of many Tony Awards. His next ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This play did ensue some political trouble against when he was brought to appear before the House of
Un American Activities Committee for the play allegory with McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the act
of making false accusations without showing the proper evidence. Miller denied to follow any of the
committee s orders. Again in 1957, Brooks Atkinson wrote about millers stand: He refused to be an
informer. He refused to turn his private conscience over to administration by the state. He has
accordingly been found in contempt of Congress. That is the measure of the man who has written
these high minded plays. This ruling was capsized by Congress two years after the debate started in
1956, so the debate only lasting for an ephemeral amount of

Thermoregulation in the Neonate
THERMOREGULATION IN THE NEONATE
By: Shubhada Ponkshe
[pic]
INTRODUCTION:
Thermoregulation is a critical physiologic function that is closely related to the transition and survival
of the infant. An understanding of transitional events and the physiologic adaptations that neonates
must make is essential to helping the nurse provide an appropriate environment and help infants
maintain thermal stability.
Optimizing the thermal environment has proven significant for improving the chances of survival for
small infants. Understanding the basic physiologic principles and current methodology of
thermoregulation is important in the clinical care of these tiny infants.
Thermoregulation is the ability to balance heat production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These conditions make newborns are at risk because Infants have more skin surface per pound of body
weight than older children or adults, more skin means more radiant heat and more insensible water
loss. Less brown fat and glycogen stores decreased ability to maintain flexion increased body surface
area compared to weight.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHERMIA / COLD STRESS:
Peripheral vasoconstriction: acrocyanosis, cold extremities, decreased peripheral perfusion.
CNS depression: lethargy, bradycardia, apnea, poor feeding
Increased pulmonary artery pressure: respiratory distress, tachypnea
Chronic signs: weight loss, failure to thrive
PREVENTION OF HYPOTHERMIA:
Hypothermia can be prevented by maintaining a neutral thermal environment and reducing heat loss.
For prevention in reduction of heat consider the four ways by which the neonate experiences heat loss
and intervene appropriately.
Convective heat loss can be prevented by:
Providing warm ambient air temperature Placing infants less than 1500 grams in incubators Keeping
portholes of the incubator closed Warming all inspired oxygen On open warmers keeping sides up and
covering infant if possible Using Infant Servo Temperature Control
Radiant heat loss can be prevented by:
Avoiding placement of incubators, warming tables and bassinets near cold windows,

The Benefits Of Prostitution
According to Bishakha Datta, 71% of prostitutes said they had entered the sex work willingly. I
believe that prostitution should be legalized for many reasons I will explain below. After looking at
trusting articles, I found that legalizing prostitution would improve medical and health issues, make
prostitution a safer environment, and create less violence and make it more police friendly. Doctors
have pushed the government to regulate and legalize prostitution. If the government would legalize
prostitution, prostitutes would have to take medical exams (Hayes Smith and Shekarkhar, 45).
Prostitutes will have to undergo many things during a health and medical exam and this will not only
effect the now, but also their future as a prostitute. Under legalization, the state will require prostitutes
to be licensed and subject to routine medical screenings for diseases. Any prostitutes found to be ill
will be unable to return to work until the problem is treated and, if it untreatable, her license will be
revoked (Hayes Smith and Shekarkhar, 50). The main purpose of legalizing prostitution is to make it
safer for the women and clients in this profession. One disease that has effected many prostitutes is
HIV. Research has been done and they found that prostitutes who work in indoor prostitution,
compared to street prostitution were not as likely to be exposed to HIV (Hayes Smith and Shekarkhar,
49). Indoor prostitution researchers have even found that sexually transmitted

The Crime Rate Of Crime
The huge crime drop suggests that also smaller amount of people are taking part in crime or that
people who do take part are obliging crimeless often. On the other hand a civilisation s rate of crime is
not a meek combination of the number of crime prone entities with specific psychological or
biological features. The impression that crime is communal rather than individual is a conspicuous
melody in much of the finest new fangled research. The crime drop partially imitates the effort of
organisations that are unambiguously intended to escalate social control, but then again it as well
imitates variations in further institutions aimed to achieve diverse societal purposes. No debate of
current U.S. crime inclinations would be comprehensive without bearing in mind the U.S. prison
inhabitants. For the reason that imprisonment rose so quickly, it is alluring to point the lion s segment
of the crime drop to the debilitating effects of prison. Numerous criminologists have faith that prisons
are in fact criminogenic in the long run, firming up criminal ties and unsettling non criminal chances
when convicts are unconfined. Looking at a study of the influence of imprisonment on crime,
sociologist Bruce Western guesses that coarsely nine tenths of the crime drop all through the 1990s
would have happened without any variations in imprisonment, (Western, 2006). Economist Steven
Levitt notes up to one third of the total drop to imprisonment. Increasing numbers of incarceration as a

Black Skin, White Mask By Frantz Fanon Essay
Unit 3 Paper: Black Skin, White Mask
In the book Black Skin, White Mask written by Frantz Fanon, the author analyzes the black
community under the rule of the white dominated culture. The book is a mixture of psychoanalysis
and personal experiences drawn from his personal life. While he was living in France. He mentions
experiences from his life and includes the theories from another physiologist in order to explain
culture. He is interested in explaining the consequences of a community and or individual when the
are ripped from their culture. He argues their culture becomes inferior to the superior culture which is
the oppressive culture. One of the key points he makes is the importance of maintaining once
language. The significance of adopting the language of the oppressive culture means once is adopting
their culture and the biological aspects of the culture. To speak means above all to assume a culture, to
support the weight of a civilization ( Fanon 17).
Frantz Fanon argues being forced to adopt and or assimilate to another culture is systematical
oppression. In his book Black Skin White Mask makes an analysis of colonized black people. Making
a point to mention the hardships of colonization and the consequences which are adapting socially,
culturally and racially. All of the following reasons come as a result of colonization. and

Summoner s Tale
Have you ever been so angry about someone that you make a completely fake story about them?
Geoffrey Chaucer s Summoner s Tale tells a tale of a Summoner that is enraged at a Friar for his tale.
The Summoner reports his own tale about a Friar. The Friar is a beggar who goes around house to
house telling sermons and asking for gifts to the church which really goes to him. He arrives at
Thomas s house and ask for gifts in exchange for praying for him. Thomas says he gave other Friars a
load of pounds, (1951) but the Friar does not believe him and goes on a sermon. Thomas gets annoyed
and tells the Friar that the gift is down his pants, so the Friar reaches down Thomas s back and
Thomas lets out a huge fart. The Friar is overwhelmed with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When the Summoner tells the line In which a licensed friar went about / To preach also to beg, no
need to doubt, (1711 1712) he accuses the Friar of begging and asking for money. The Summoner only
did accused the Friar because he was enraged with anger and was seeking payback on to the Friar for
his tale. This strengthens the plot by adding anger and revenge to the story line. Chaucer introduces a
sense of anger and revenge to strengthen the plot finally when Thomas tells the Friar he has a gift for
him and lets out a fart louder than a horse. At the end of the tale, Thomas says he has a gift for the
Friar. Thomas was annoyed by the Friar and was exceedingly angry at him. Thomas wanted revenge
from hearing that too long of a sermon and for the Friars hypocrisy. In the line To grope around his
orifice, right in / The friar s hand the fellow let a fart. / No single horse that s ever drawn a cart / Has
ever let a fart with such a sound, (2147 2150) the Summoner uses his anger to creatively create the
punishment of the fart on the Friar. This was revenge for the tale that the Friar said about the
Summoner and this strengthens the plot of the Summoner s tale. The Summoner enraged with a fury
stronger than a hurricane created a creatively weird tale about revenge and a fart with a strange plot.
To strengthen the plot, Chaucer introduces a sense of anger and revenge in The

Software Technology on Student Learning
My topic for the Senior Exhibition is Software Technology. I want to demonstrate how using
technology can enhance a high school students learning experience. By knowing what I know about
Software Technology I want to demonstrate how effective it can be to the educational system. As a
learning experience, It will include my interview with my mentor and all the sources I cited. It will
also include the ideas that will be required to commence my project right away. Technology has
impacted our lives with it s extraordinary stuff it can do. Finding almost all the answers to literally
anything, technology can be the answer to be a successful future. Creating software programs is much
harder than it sounds like. You need to know how to write code in a computer JavaScript which many
people do not know what it is or what it means. A JavaScript is a blank page where you write
commands (code) to order the computer to display and demonstrate it on the user computer screen.
Students these past few years, have been utilizing their mobile phones or tablets as a resource to assist
them with any of their assignments. There are already some few software applications in smartphones
that allow the user to get help on any subject for the sake of learning with videos or with hands on
tutorials. Technology has advanced so much it s been idealized as perfection on computer platforms.

Classics Should Be Taught In Australia Essay
There is no hiding the fact, classics can be a challenge to read: however, does that mean we should

Waltzing Matilda . For those that do recognize the song would most likely only be able to recite the

Australia s classics are being lost as and enhanced number of children recognize dreamtime stories

The mass migrations of blacks into Harlem happened around the early 1900 as living conditions
worsen in other parts of the country. Specifically, the KKK in South Carolina, and racial segregation
and biases across the south enforced by the Jim Crow Laws, forced black families to go north in
search of better housing, jobs and education for their children, and more so, to move away from a
culture of lynching and violence. They did not anticipate the violent situations they would face in the
North. Due to discrimination they were pushed further and further up Manhattan and into
neighborhoods that were over concentrated with blacks and minorities. At times, they faced worsen

The Differences Between Men and Women Essay
For countless generations it has been a mystery, almost creditable for extensive research and
investigation, why men and women are viewed as complete opposites. Men and women have never
and will never be the same. From the beginning, men have been trained and conditioned to be the
dominant hunters in society, where as women were generally the less aggressive individuals in any
given population. But after all, they were born to be different, excluding anatomical distinctions. In
spite of medical enhancements, women live four to five years longer than men. They both have

which is why men and women deal with different scenarios throughout the day, everyday. Thus, their

how men are not aware of women s fears. Most men do quickly realize why woman would be
concerned, but they must first stop and think about it why she should feel that way (Student Eight).
That statement is blatantly true, because of the way a majority of men are raised. They are scrutinized
and even anticipated to be the dominant I can do whatever I want, I am man! type of character. They
have to be the man about everything (Student Three). Even as children, boys and girls are taught

Effects Of Ocean Acidification On Shellfish
Introduction The purpose of this project was to demonstrate the effects of ocean acidification and
temperature increase on shellfish. Ever since the Industrial Revolution began, carbon dioxide emission
in the air has greatly increased, and around the same time, the temperature of the ocean, along with the
atmosphere, showed a similar trend. Scientists claimd that ocean acidification and temperature
increase is deadly to marine life, including shellfish. It was hypothesized that the mass of the shells of
shellfish will decrease due to acidification and temperature increase because acid is known to break
down bones and because high temperature can damage skin cells.
Ocean acidification is happening throughout the oceans at this very moment. Ever since the start of the
Industrial Revolution, excess amounts of carbon dioxide have been released to the atmosphere. The
ocean absorbs around a quarter of the carbon dioxide released every year, so as the amount of CO2
increases in the air, so does the amount of CO2 in the ocean. Scientists, at first thought this was
beneficial to the environment as the ocean was removing greenhouse gas from the atmosphere;
however, it slowly changed the chemistry of the oceans. The increase of carbon dioxide in the oceans
led them to become more acidic, which affected the marine ecosystems. The PMEL Carbon Program
monitored the oceans for three decades and they recently revealed how carbon dioxide affected the
coral reef systems in the North Pacific

The Benefits Of Long Distance Relationships
Long distance relationships are common in our present day culture because of personal choices. We
are connected on a global scale and these connections are not only economical, they are also romantic.
Personally, this facet of living in 2017 has affected the relationship with my boyfriend and many
problems occur when living far away from the person I love. Commonly, the problems caused by
distances in communication create turmoil that transition into our romantic lives. The solution for this
concern is based on a technology product that provides individuals a wider range of options.
Macmillan Dictionary defines long distance relationship as a romantic relationship between two
people who live far apart and so cannot see each other very often. By saying long distance
relationship, it is not only an obstacle for lovers. Married couples, friends, and parents with their
children might also experience the same situation. Geographically separation can come from a variety
of reasons, including college students going to different school, individuals pursue different career
goals, and for immigration purpose. Married couples can be separated due to military service or
deployment. Not many people believe in the durability of a long distance relationship. In my case, I

Two formal art elements represented in this painting is line and color. The line is shown in this
painting organically with smooth brush strokes of the oil creating volume within the clouds and plants,
and even the wheat on the foreground. These lines are smooth and flowing through out the painting
creating movement.
The color is shown in this painting as an analogous color scheme of blues, greens, and yellow tones.
These colors represent the land very well and do not need any other colors to bring out the subject
matter of the landscape.
Two design principles represented in this painting are movement and rhythm. Movement is
represented in this painting by the flowing lines. Circular lines in the sky represent the wind and
clouds moving through the sky. The movement gives the viewer a sense of free flowing movement of
air through the wheat.
Rhythm is shown in this painting by the repeat of the lines through the tree, bushes, and even wheat to
show the flowing of wind through the plants. The repeated colors of green and yellow give the feeling
of the organized movement this gives the emotion of happiness and care

Solving Multi Criteria Decision Making Problems
There are several methods to solve multi criteria decision making problems. Analytic Hierarchy
Process (AHP) and Analytic Network Process (ANP) are two methods created by Tomas Saaty. AHP
endeavor to solve the decision making problem by formed it in a hierarchy while ANP is used when
the problem is so complex that cannot be formed as a hierarchy. This complexity happens because of
the effect of criteria between each other or the effect of alternatives on criteria. Generally we can say
The Analytic Network Process is a generalization of the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The ANP
approach can be comprises in to four steps [87]:
Step 1: Model construction and problem structuring: The problem should be stated clearly and
decomposed into a rational system like a network
Step 2: Pairwise comparisons and priority vectors: In ANP, like AHP, pairs of decision elements at
each cluster are compared with respect to their importance towards their control criteria. Furthermore,
interdependencies among criteria of a cluster must also be treated pairwise; thus the influence of each
element on other elements can be represented by an eigenvector. The relative importance values are
determined with Saaty s nine scales.
Step 3: Supermatrix structure: the Supermatrix concept is similar to the Markov chain process. To
obtain global priorities in a system with interdependent influences, the local priority vectors are
entered in the appropriate columns of a matrix. As a result, a supermatrix is

How Does Spencer Use Geological Examples To Come Compare...
In the reading, Progress: Its Law and Cause by Herbert Spencer tries to decode how evolution in
organisms such as humans differs. He uses the terms heterogeneous and homogeneous when trying to
determine evolution in humans and savages. Spencer identifies that humans have evolved from an
organism to what we are today. He uses examples like social evolution to justify his answer as the
civilization as a whole has changed. This example justifies the evolution from savages to humans.
Why does Spencer use geological examples to come compare humans and savages as being different?

The Power Of American Dream In The Great Gatsby
It is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed
out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short winded elations of men (Fitzgerald, 7). These words
introduce the thinking behind the novel The Great Gatsby, a classic novel written by Scott Fitzgerald
that follows Jay Gatsby s idealistic American Dream. Gatsby s life revolves around the idealistic
nature that wealth and notoriety can result in having the life he desires. His ambition to succeed in
wealth inspires Gatsby s resolution to sunder the roots which define his social standing and realise his
own dream of position and prosperity. Gatsby s motivation for an accumulation of wealth separates
him from his similar affluent counterparts such as Tom and Jordan, as the purpose for Gatsby s social
elevation is not simply the product of his pursuit of fortune, but in order to win Daisy Buchanan s
love. The character of Jay Gatsby symbolizes the fallacies of American Dream in valuing wealth,
status, and noteriority ultimately leading to an illusion of happiness. The story illustrate the corrupting
power of wealth and materialistic values in the pursuit of the American Dream. As Gatsby falls in love
with Daisy because of her wealth, beauty, and charm, he realizes that Daisy would reject him if she
knew of his poverty and decides to gain wealth through illegal bootlegging in order to make Daisy
admire him. This results in Gatsby adorning himself in expensive items such

Effective Teacher Essay
Teachers play an important role in student s life. The most powerful role model for students are
teachers, they are responsible to shape their future. Effective teaching is when a teacher educates to
the best interest of his students. An effective teacher should have an outstanding knowledge of the
contents they are teaching; they should explain the contents in extensive details and use different
strategies to enhance student s interest and learning. Moreover, an effective teacher should trust their
students and understand their social and emotional needs. They should have a positive assumption for
students success and believe that all students are capable to assess higher forms of thinking and

Mr. Mike is a math teacher I am observing at International High school. He has what it takes to be an
effective teacher. His first class starts at 9:15 am every day; he arrives to class early to get everything
set up before the students come in. Students arrive to class on time; Mr. Mike already has the question
for the new topic on the smart board. He starts his lesson by recalling what they learned in the
previous class. Then he introduces the new topic along with an interesting story; which seems to grab
student s attention. Mr. Mike shows a tremendous understanding and knowledge about the topic. The
topic is about a word problem where students have to guess how many people could fit on a table if
they keep adding tables together. Students have to draw a diagram of the situations; then they have to
find a formula to illustrate the problem. After finding the formula, they have to use it to calculate how
many people could fit if there are 50 or more tables together. Mr. Mike explains the problem in details.
The project he uses reinforced students to use different representation of these mathematical problems.
Every student completed the assignment. As a class, they discussed the problem and to assess learning

summarizes the major provisions of The Federal Insecticide, and Rodenticide Act. Additionally, the
author also describes the economic impact of this law and share data to support the discussion. The
paper also provides additional information relating to global warming. Furthermore, the essayist offers
an opinion as to whether or not The United States of America should adopt other policies or laws to
regulate and encourage curbing greenhouse emissions. Federal regulation of pesticides in the United
States has evolved from two pieces of legislation enacted around the turn of the century: the Federal
Insecticide Act of 1910 and the Federal Food and Drugs Act of 1906 (Toth, 1996). In 1910, the
Federal Government first started to regulate pesticides with the passing of the Insecticide Act of 1910.
In 1947, Congress broadened the role of the U.S. Government by passing the first Federal Insecticide,

you have been made the victim of a very old and terrible lie (65). Therefore, this scene violates O
Brien s paradigm of a true war story because it is uplifting. After the beheading of William Wallace,
Robert the Bruce rode out to pay homage to the armies of the English king and accept his endorsement

The Help Theory
For my movie review, I chose to watch the movie, The Help. The movie was centered around a white
female writer named Skeeter, who wrote a book titled The Help that exposed the hardships and
struggles that African American maids experienced in regards to working for white upper class
families. The movie took place in Mississippi in the 1960 s during the civil rights movement and it
showed how disgusting and racist white people were to African Americans at that time. Throughout
the movie, viewers see how horrible African American s were treated. For example, one white
housewife named Hilly is so focused on getting separate bathrooms for her maids because she believes

For instance, they could not touch the white people s hands and they could not sit and eat with them.
This could be related to the germ theory, which was used as a separate, but equal tool. The germ
theory was a theory that stated that black people had diseases and illnesses that could be spread to
white people if they were to become in contact with them. This lead to the segregation of black people
from white people in regards to public restrooms, waiting rooms, and even water fountains. This again
goes back to the Jim Crow laws and how the white people wanted to protect themselves. This shows
how white people thought of themselves as inferior to the black people. One scene in the movie that
went against the germ theory and the Jim Crow laws was when one housewife, Celia, who never
employed a maid before, acted like her maid, Minny was one of her friends. She wasn t like any of the

Literary Devices In A Prayer For Owen Meany
When reading John Irving s, A Prayer for Owen Meany, he uses a plethora of literary devices and
techniques. Out of the list that he displays in this novel, there are three elements that really draw
through the entire piece. These being: foreshadowing, irony, and setting. The three listed are the
devices Irving uses to the most extent and impact the story more than all the others. Foreshadowing is
the clearest to spot throughout the chapters. Launching in the second chapter, The Armadillo, was
when Owen Meany first came across as a Christ figure. Johnny s cousins come to 80 Front Street to
visit for Thanksgiving and Owen Meany is upstairs in the attic with Johnny. Hesitantly, Johnny
introduces the cousins to Owen, scared of how they ll treat Owen, or how they ll treat Johnny for
being friends with him. After the cousins declare how wimpy Owen is and make fun of his voice, they
see Owen in the attic with his arms behind his back (being armless) and the sun shining from behind
him, making him look like the ultimate Christ figure. Hester even stated to Johnny that she didn t even
think he was human. Johnny connects Owen to God, thinking that there is no doubt that, in the
dazzling configurations of the sun that poured through the attic in skylights, he look looked like a

An example of symbolism could even be Owen Meany representing Christ or Johnny s guardian angel

and characters representing the disadvantages of missing a body part or the helplessness of some
people, or relationships with God and surrendering to their beliefs. These people include Lydia s
amputated leg, Johnny s finger, Tabitha s dressing dummy, and many others mentioned through out the

Determinism in Slaughterhouse-Five by Billy Pilgrim Essay
Determinism, particularly pre determinism, states that the origin of creation controls when and why all
events of the past, present, and future occur, which decisively contradicts the belief in free will of the
majority of humans in today s society. Slaughterhouse Five follows the life of Billy Pilgrim, a young
man who has become unstuck in time. The novel traces Billy s experiences during the bombing of
Dresden in World War II, an encounter with extraterrestrials, called Tralfamadorians, and throughout
his domestic life as a father, husband, and optometrist. In particular, Kurt Vonnegut explores the
bombing of Dresden and the effects thereof on Billy Pilgrim, forming Billy into an apparently insane
character who speaks of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While never a defeatist, Billy merely flows through his disjointed life without much heed to the event
at hand. Billy realizes that he holds the power to create his own happiness and satisfaction out of life
through appreciation of the present moment rather than contemplate the occurrence of past and future.
Vonnegut develops Billy Pilgrim as a unique protagonist as a means of forcing the reader to question
the application of free will upon society and gain a new perspective on the beauty of the present. Once
Billy becomes capable of time travel and comes into contact with the Tralfamadorians, he simply goes
through the motions of life but avoids falling into a defeatist attitude. Under the tutelage of the
Tralfamadorians, Billy fashions a brand new perspective towards society and enhances his natural
persona, When Billy accepts the Tralfamadorian philosophy, the passivity that he has displayed his
entire life from wanting to drift quietly at the bottom of the YMCA pool after his father throws him in,
to begging Roland Weary to leave him behind is justified. If the future cannot be changed anyway,
why even try? (Farrell 9). Though the interaction with the Tralfamadorians seems to allow Billy an
outlet to construct his own ideals upon the universe, he nonetheless continues along the same path as
before. Billy becomes an extremist towards passivity in life rather than utilizing the experience to
impart a strong impression

Margaret Atwood s Oryx And Crake
In Margaret Atwood s Oryx and Crake, she describes a frightening dystopian futuristic society that
consists of the compounds and the pleeblands. The compounds are home to wealthier class, that work
in industrial plants during the day and enjoy the shopping malls and fancy dining at night. The
pleeblands are nearly the exact opposite. Snowman, the main character of the novel and former
inhabitant of the compounds, describes them as disease infested, drug ridden ghettos. These two
communities could not be further separated. Unfortunately, it appears as if Margaret Atwood s

Zizek is trying to address a systemic problem of objective violence that is a result of global isolation
and division. He writes on page 102, This new racism of the developed is in a way much more brutal
than the previous ones: its implicit legitimisation is neither naturalist (the natural superiority of the
developed West) nor any longer cultural (we in the West want to preserve our cultural identity), but
unabashed economic egotism. The fundamental divide is one between those included in the sphere of
(relative) economic prosperity and those excluded from it (102). This quote perfectly describes the
global epidemic that we now face, where the global community is so fixated on building walls and
turning our heads to those who do not fit our mold. What is more frightening, however, is that
economic egotism along with racial and sociological isolation is happening on a domestic basis. It s
not as simple as national pride and desire to keep our cultural intact, as Zizek notes. Rather, in the
United States, seen first hand in New Orleans, there is a blatant rejection for those who are not on the
same economic and social platform as ourselves(102). In Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood illustrates
a fantastical world with compounds and pleeblands. Over the course of the book the reader is given
many images of the pleeblands. A good example is when

Substance Abuse And Its Effects
SUBSTANCE ABUSE Researchers state that almost half of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia
in the United States also self medicate with alcohol and other drugs (Elements Behavioral Health,
2014). This is suggested due to individuals attempting to lessen the symptoms of their disorder. As
discussed previously symptoms can include hearing and seeing things that others don t hear or see,
problems falling asleep or staying asleep and problems with concentration and memory. In an effort to
lessen these symptoms alcohol and other drugs are used to induce sleep (NIMH, 2014). Research
suggests that approximately fifty percent of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia have a co
occurring substance abuse disorder. The most common used are alcohol, marijuana and tobacco
(Green, Drake, Brunette Noordsy, 2007) (Dube, 2012). In contrast to what individuals diagnosed with
schizophrenia think they may be achieving by using alcohol and other drugs, research states that
substance use may actually modify the dysfunction in the brain reward center by increasing the
symptoms (Green et.al, 2007). Self medicating with alcohol and other drugs can often lead to
disruptions in gaining access to treatment. Pharmacological treatment is seen as one of the most
effective ways to assist with symptom reduction, and using alcohol and other drugs often interfere
(MHA, n.d). Some research studies have proposed that when an individual consumes any sort of mood
altering substance, such as alcohol

1) How does Lizzie (Christina Ricci) describe her depression?
Lizzie describes her depression in various ways to herself and others. She says that she felt as if she
was, drowned by some kind of black wave. This wave overpowered her. Also, she talked about how
she was always exhausted when she woke up, because her mind was running wild all night; she had
clear sleep deprivation. She shows the depression symptom of suicidal thoughts when she says, I m in
more trouble than I m worth. With this, we can apply that she does not feel as though she is worth
anything in this life at this moment. Continuing, she describes her depression more so as I m falling
and I m dead [inside]. We can truly see the sadness that is inside her.
2) How do Lizzie s friends and family react to her depression?
Lizzie s friends and family reacted in various ways to her depression. The most common trend that
seemed to happen was that everyone wanted to help her, but they did not know how. One instant that
her friends helped her was when they brought her to therapy. But her friends abandoned her
throughout the movie, because they were worried and got upset with her behavior. Her mom was very
worried about her and cried a lot. However, her Mom did tell her that she didn t have to change herself

Consequently, this group of consumers possesses the greatest growth potential. In connection with this
growth potential, Starbucks also started Hear Music Coffeehouse stores that offer in store music CD
burning services. Starbucks further started to open Media Bars where customers can create their own
mix of CDs. This is Starbucks first phase of a multi phased national rollout (Starbucks, 2006). Most
likely these creative efforts will boost growth from the younger patorns and music lovers.
On the other hand, the older generations may be reluctant to be attracted to Starbucks. Rather, they
may just visit a local coffee shop instead. Therefore this market segment may not grow as fast as the
younger generations. Furthermore, a market segment that has declining potential is the busy working
professionals. Because of their busy schedule, these working professionals, males and females alike,
may just brew their own coffees in the office space. Another discouraging factor is the much higher
price of Starbucks coffee products. As a general rule, Starbucks does not offer promotional prices on
its products, which tend to be higher than those of competitors (Wikipedia, 2006). As people grow
older, they may be more conscientious to their spending. Regardless of continued future growth
potentials, Starbucks faces some drawbacks. In an effort to increase sales, Starbucks started to print

Patent Rights, And Foreign Patent Protection
In the encyclopedia excerpt on the patent it explains what may be patented, obtaining a patent, the
nature of patent rights, and foreign patent protection. To begin, this article describes what maybe
patented. There are three types of patents utility patents, design patents, and plant patents. Each of
these give the inventors ownership of their idea or invention. The utility patent is created for the
usefulness of the invention. The utility patent is the most common patent used. A design patent is how
the invention looks over how it works. Lastly, the plant patent, which is granted to a developer or
discoverer and new variety of plant, reproduced by cuttings, grafting, or other asexual means. All
types of patent are governed under title 35 of the United States codes. Under this code it explains that
all patents are under the patent statues. Getting approval on a patent does not meant that it is a new
invention all the time it could just be an improvement or just a new way of doing something. In
addition, obtaining a patent is a long and challenging process. It takes time to apply for a chance to
submit an application to the examiners. After the application is approved it is then published into the
public. The invention has to be a new or novel invention. Being novel means that it is nonobvious.
Furthermore, the patent holder has 17 years to exclude others from making, using, or selling the
invention throughout the United States. A patentee can give people some rights to the

Theme Of Richard Bone
The subject matter of death isn t the theme of this poem. The poem prevails truth being disguised and
manipulated over documented history. This not only opens the mind into questioning whether
historical events truly happened the way historians say it did, or whether documentation can prove a
justification of truth, but it forces the second idea to raise questions whether any of the history being
told is true at all. The poem Richard Bone carries out this idea strongly. The reason this poem plays an
interest in my mind is that it synthesizes to current events happening every day in the real world in a
variety of ways. The poem places the tactic of truth versus false and how reality plays with this
fundamental game with scenarios of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

were really who they said they were. Richard Bone is prone to the idea that evil dominates the
goodness in the world, so why don t some of the tombstones describe the characteristics that were
strongly disliked of that certain individual? Only being described as a good person only prevails that
the truth is being hidden. After all, because the tombstone represents what the person was, people
paying for the chisels wanted to remember the goodness in the heart of that individual, not that that
person at some point in their lives betrayed them. Tombstones are a certain scar. Richard Bone, tells

Unindigenous Species
The Introduction of nonindigenous Species The most important aspect of a government is their ability
to be able to decide for the people. One major decision that comes from the government is whether or
not non indigenous species should be transferred to another country. Since invasive species tend to
result in negative impacts rather than beneficial ones, stricter regulations should be put into effect to
avoid the possibility of unintended negative consequences because of the harm that could come out of
the transfer at the end. Yet, introduced species could be major improvements in some aspects,
therefore these stricter regulations should be based upon important studies and considerations. As a
result, the most important consideration that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since an invasive species can be any kind of newly introduced living organism then it would be hard
to determine what risk there would be from the introduction and what they would result in since,
Approximately 42% of Threatened or Endangered species are at risk primarily due to invasive species
(Source A). This shows that the introduction between these species have either not been thought out
well or nothing has been done to prevent these threats. Since the protection of the native specie and
the ability of the non native specie to adapt to the new environment is a crucial factor for a good
encounter, the results must first be calculated as accurate as possible in order for the government to
base the decision upon because the non native species will endanger the native specie if it becomes
more dominant. Therefore, the habitat and food cycle of the native species must also be studied in
order to prevent any altercations because they are considered one of the most impacted areas when the
defence system of the native species is off. As a result, transferring the non indigenous specie into the

  • 2. Year Round Education Essay Year Round Education For more than twenty years the educational and economic benefits of year round schooling have been debated in the United States. Experts agree that year round schooling may not be the answer to the problems of all school districts. However in more than 205 districts nation wide, problems have been resolved by year round schooling. First I need to explain that this is different from extending the school year; on a year round schedule, students attend school the same number of days 180 as students on the traditional nine month calendar. The difference is that year round education (YRE) students have several short vacations rather than one three month summer break. Most year round schools operate on a multi track ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These countries typically require longer instructional days and more of them than most American schools, where the eight hour per day, 180 day a year model is standard (Worsnop,96). This type of schooling may be the answer to the decades old concern that American students are being ill prepared to compete with their counterparts overseas. By the most objective measure, test scores, year round education seems to be working. For example, before switching to its new schedule, Socorro schools had some of the lowest test scores in the country. Now Socorro students outscore the state average on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (Blackman,99) For many school administrators, the most persuasive argument in favor of YRE is that it offers a cost effective way of relieving classroom overcrowding. Instead of renting commercial space, portable classrooms or constructing new schools administrators can enlarge the capacity of existing facilities by converting them to year round operation. Implementing a year round calendar extends the capacity of a school by 33 percent, according to NAYRE (National Association for Year Round Education.) The Oxnard Elementary School District is considered the pioneer of year round educational systems. Oxnard first reorganized their schedule in 1976. The driving forces behind the updated schedule were the increasing number of students in the buildings and lack of funds. Oxnard has had success with this arrangement. Building ... • 3. Arther Miller Come along as an adventure through time takes launch. From the interim of Arthur Miller s birth and death, he wrote some of America s greatest plays which are known all around the world. This world renowned screenwriter and playwright is arguably considered the best playwright of the 20th century. We start our journey here on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York where Miller was born. Arther Miller was the son of Isidore and Augusta, a Polish and Jewish Immigrant family who owned a flourishing manufacturing business. The miller family got hit hard during the Wall Street Crash of 1929 nearly losing everything. Arther Miller worked hard after he graduated high school, so he would be able to pay for his collage tuition at the University of Michigan. It was at Michigan that he wrote his first play, No Villain. This play won him the school s Avery Hopwood Award and sparked the beginning of his successful career as a playwright. The beginning of Miller s playwright career came out with a boom with, All My Sons, which debuted on Broadway in 1947. This play won Miller his first of many Tony Awards. His next ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This play did ensue some political trouble against when he was brought to appear before the House of Un American Activities Committee for the play allegory with McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the act of making false accusations without showing the proper evidence. Miller denied to follow any of the committee s orders. Again in 1957, Brooks Atkinson wrote about millers stand: He refused to be an informer. He refused to turn his private conscience over to administration by the state. He has accordingly been found in contempt of Congress. That is the measure of the man who has written these high minded plays. Thermoregulation in the Neonate THERMOREGULATION IN THE NEONATE By: Shubhada Ponkshe [pic] INTRODUCTION: Thermoregulation is a critical physiologic function that is closely related to the transition and survival of the infant. An understanding of transitional events and the physiologic adaptations that neonates must make is essential to helping the nurse provide an appropriate environment and help infants maintain thermal stability. Optimizing the thermal environment has proven significant for improving the chances of survival for small infants. Understanding the basic physiologic principles and current methodology of thermoregulation is important in the clinical care of these tiny infants. Thermoregulation is the ability to balance heat production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These conditions make newborns are at risk because Infants have more skin surface per pound of body weight than older children or adults, more skin means more radiant heat and more insensible water loss. • 6. The Benefits Of Prostitution According to Bishakha Datta, 71% of prostitutes said they had entered the sex work willingly. I believe that prostitution should be legalized for many reasons I will explain below. After looking at trusting articles, I found that legalizing prostitution would improve medical and health issues, make prostitution a safer environment, and create less violence and make it more police friendly. Doctors have pushed the government to regulate and legalize prostitution. If the government would legalize prostitution, prostitutes would have to take medical exams (Hayes Smith and Shekarkhar, 45). Prostitutes will have to undergo many things during a health and medical exam and this will not only effect the now, but also their future as a prostitute. Under legalization, the state will require prostitutes to be licensed and subject to routine medical screenings for diseases. Any prostitutes found to be ill will be unable to return to work until the problem is treated and, if it untreatable, her license will be revoked (Hayes Smith and Shekarkhar, 50). The main purpose of legalizing prostitution is to make it safer for the women and clients in this profession. One disease that has effected many prostitutes is HIV. Research has been done and they found that prostitutes who work in indoor prostitution, compared to street prostitution were not as likely to be exposed to HIV (Hayes Smith and Shekarkhar, 49). On the other hand a civilisation s rate of crime is not a meek combination of the number of crime prone entities with specific psychological or biological features. The impression that crime is communal rather than individual is a conspicuous melody in much of the finest new fangled research. The crime drop partially imitates the effort of organisations that are unambiguously intended to escalate social control, but then again it as well imitates variations in further institutions aimed to achieve diverse societal purposes. No debate of current U.S. crime inclinations would be comprehensive without bearing in mind the U.S. prison inhabitants. For the reason that imprisonment rose so quickly, it is alluring to point the lion s segment of the crime drop to the debilitating effects of prison. Numerous criminologists have faith that prisons are in fact criminogenic in the long run, firming up criminal ties and unsettling non criminal chances when convicts are unconfined. Looking at a study of the influence of imprisonment on crime, sociologist Bruce Western guesses that coarsely nine tenths of the crime drop all through the 1990s would have happened without any variations in imprisonment, (Western, 2006). • 21. Effects Of Ocean Acidification On Shellfish Introduction The purpose of this project was to demonstrate the effects of ocean acidification and temperature increase on shellfish. Ever since the Industrial Revolution began, carbon dioxide emission in the air has greatly increased, and around the same time, the temperature of the ocean, along with the atmosphere, showed a similar trend. Scientists claimd that ocean acidification and temperature increase is deadly to marine life, including shellfish. It was hypothesized that the mass of the shells of shellfish will decrease due to acidification and temperature increase because acid is known to break down bones and because high temperature can damage skin cells. Ocean acidification is happening throughout the oceans at this very moment. Ever since the start of the Industrial Revolution, excess amounts of carbon dioxide have been released to the atmosphere. The ocean absorbs around a quarter of the carbon dioxide released every year, so as the amount of CO2 increases in the air, so does the amount of CO2 in the ocean. Scientists, at first thought this was beneficial to the environment as the ocean was removing greenhouse gas from the atmosphere; however, it slowly changed the chemistry of the oceans. The increase of carbon dioxide in the oceans led them to become more acidic, which affected the marine ecosystems. The PMEL Carbon Program monitored the oceans for three decades and they recently revealed how carbon dioxide affected the coral reef systems in the North Pacific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Analytic Network Process (ANP) are two methods created by Tomas Saaty. AHP endeavor to solve the decision making problem by formed it in a hierarchy while ANP is used when the problem is so complex that cannot be formed as a hierarchy. This complexity happens because of the effect of criteria between each other or the effect of alternatives on criteria. Generally we can say The Analytic Network Process is a generalization of the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The ANP approach can be comprises in to four steps [87]: Step 1: Model construction and problem structuring: The problem should be stated clearly and decomposed into a rational system like a network Step 2: Pairwise comparisons and priority vectors: In ANP, like AHP, pairs of decision elements at each cluster are compared with respect to their importance towards their control criteria. Furthermore, interdependencies among criteria of a cluster must also be treated pairwise; thus the influence of each element on other elements can be represented by an eigenvector. The relative importance values are determined with Saaty s nine scales. Step 3: Supermatrix structure: the Supermatrix concept is similar to the Markov chain process. To obtain global priorities in a system with interdependent influences, the local priority vectors are entered in the appropriate columns of a matrix. As a result, a supermatrix is ... As you remove your blade from the man you just killed, you see one of your men getting gutted in half by the enemy, so you jolt up in a full stride down the battlefield towards your target to carry out revenge. As you run the screams of the wounded cloud your ears, and as you get closer you are faced with enemies hurling at you from left and right inflicting wounds that would have any other man on their knees; nevertheless, you are no ordinary man. You have the heart of a warrior. Finally, as you are mere strides away from killing your target you draw your sword, and drive it into his skull. Therefore, this scene violates O Brien s paradigm of a true war story because it is uplifting. After the beheading of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce rode out to pay homage to the armies of the English king and accept his endorsement of his crown. The scene begins with an extreme long shot of the Scots as they stand facing the English. In a medium shot, Craig, his advisor says, Come. Let s get it over with. Robert looks to him agrees, and they both begin to walk their horses towards the English men. Suddenly, the camera switches to a medium close up, and Robert yells, Stop! You have bled with Wallace, now bleed with me! Next, the musical score in the scene begins to get louder and louder. Hamish (Andrew Weir) looks to Robert the Bruce, removes a sword from its carrier and throws it in the air and it lands in the middle of the battlefield. Then, captured in an extreme long shot, the Scots synchronously begin to chant, Wallace! Lastly, Robert and the Scots raise their swords, and charge towards the English in slow motion, as a narrator s commentary is done by William Wallace, In the year of our Lord 1314, patriots of Scotland, starving and outnumbered, charged the fields at Bannockburn. • 32. The Help Theory For my movie review, I chose to watch the movie, The Help. The movie was centered around a white female writer named Skeeter, who wrote a book titled The Help that exposed the hardships and struggles that African American maids experienced in regards to working for white upper class families. The movie took place in Mississippi in the 1960 s during the civil rights movement and it showed how disgusting and racist white people were to African Americans at that time. Throughout the movie, viewers see how horrible African American s were treated. For example, one white housewife named Hilly is so focused on getting separate bathrooms for her maids because she believes that African American s had diseases and she did not want them to use her bathroom for ... This could be related to the germ theory, which was used as a separate, but equal tool. The germ theory was a theory that stated that black people had diseases and illnesses that could be spread to white people if they were to become in contact with them. This lead to the segregation of black people from white people in regards to public restrooms, waiting rooms, and even water fountains. This again goes back to the Jim Crow laws and how the white people wanted to protect themselves. This shows how white people thought of themselves as inferior to the black people. One scene in the movie that went against the germ theory and the Jim Crow laws was when one housewife, Celia, who never employed a maid before, acted like her maid, Minny was one of her friends. • 34. Literary Devices In A Prayer For Owen Meany When reading John Irving s, A Prayer for Owen Meany, he uses a plethora of literary devices and techniques. Out of the list that he displays in this novel, there are three elements that really draw through the entire piece. These being: foreshadowing, irony, and setting. The three listed are the devices Irving uses to the most extent and impact the story more than all the others. Foreshadowing is the clearest to spot throughout the chapters. Launching in the second chapter, The Armadillo, was when Owen Meany first came across as a Christ figure. Johnny s cousins come to 80 Front Street to visit for Thanksgiving and Owen Meany is upstairs in the attic with Johnny. Hesitantly, Johnny introduces the cousins to Owen, scared of how they ll treat Owen, or how they ll treat Johnny for being friends with him. After the cousins declare how wimpy Owen is and make fun of his voice, they see Owen in the attic with his arms behind his back (being armless) and the sun shining from behind him, making him look like the ultimate Christ figure. • 35. Determinism in Slaughterhouse-Five by Billy Pilgrim Essay Determinism, particularly pre determinism, states that the origin of creation controls when and why all events of the past, present, and future occur, which decisively contradicts the belief in free will of the majority of humans in today s society. Slaughterhouse Five follows the life of Billy Pilgrim, a young man who has become unstuck in time. The novel traces Billy s experiences during the bombing of Dresden in World War II, an encounter with extraterrestrials, called Tralfamadorians, and throughout his domestic life as a father, husband, and optometrist. In particular, Kurt Vonnegut explores the bombing of Dresden and the effects thereof on Billy Pilgrim, forming Billy into an apparently insane character who speaks of ... Billy realizes that he holds the power to create his own happiness and satisfaction out of life through appreciation of the present moment rather than contemplate the occurrence of past and future. Vonnegut develops Billy Pilgrim as a unique protagonist as a means of forcing the reader to question the application of free will upon society and gain a new perspective on the beauty of the present. Once Billy becomes capable of time travel and comes into contact with the Tralfamadorians, he simply goes through the motions of life but avoids falling into a defeatist attitude. Under the tutelage of the Tralfamadorians, Billy fashions a brand new perspective towards society and enhances his natural persona, When Billy accepts the Tralfamadorian philosophy, the passivity that he has displayed his entire life from wanting to drift quietly at the bottom of the YMCA pool after his father throws him in, to begging Roland Weary to leave him behind is justified. If the future cannot be changed anyway, why even try? (Farrell 9). The compounds are home to wealthier class, that work in industrial plants during the day and enjoy the shopping malls and fancy dining at night. The pleeblands are nearly the exact opposite. Snowman, the main character of the novel and former inhabitant of the compounds, describes them as disease infested, drug ridden ghettos. These two communities could not be further separated. Zizek is trying to address a systemic problem of objective violence that is a result of global isolation and division. He writes on page 102, This new racism of the developed is in a way much more brutal than the previous ones: its implicit legitimisation is neither naturalist (the natural superiority of the developed West) nor any longer cultural (we in the West want to preserve our cultural identity), but unabashed economic egotism. The fundamental divide is one between those included in the sphere of (relative) economic prosperity and those excluded from it (102). This quote perfectly describes the global epidemic that we now face, where the global community is so fixated on building walls and turning our heads to those who do not fit our mold. What is more frightening, however, is that economic egotism along with racial and sociological isolation is happening on a domestic basis. It s not as simple as national pride and desire to keep our cultural intact, as Zizek notes. Rather, in the United States, seen first hand in New Orleans, there is a blatant rejection for those who are not on the same economic and social platform as ourselves(102). In Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood illustrates a fantastical world with compounds and pleeblands. Over the course of the book the reader is given many images of the pleeblands. Substance Abuse And Its Effects SUBSTANCE ABUSE Researchers state that almost half of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia in the United States also self medicate with alcohol and other drugs (Elements Behavioral Health, 2014). This is suggested due to individuals attempting to lessen the symptoms of their disorder. As discussed previously symptoms can include hearing and seeing things that others don t hear or see, problems falling asleep or staying asleep and problems with concentration and memory. In an effort to lessen these symptoms alcohol and other drugs are used to induce sleep (NIMH, 2014). Research suggests that approximately fifty percent of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia have a co occurring substance abuse disorder. The most common used are alcohol, marijuana and tobacco (Green, Drake, Brunette Noordsy, 2007) (Dube, 2012). In contrast to what individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia think they may be achieving by using alcohol and other drugs, research states that substance use may actually modify the dysfunction in the brain reward center by increasing the symptoms (Green et.al, 2007). Self medicating with alcohol and other drugs can often lead to disruptions in gaining access to treatment. Pharmacological treatment is seen as one of the most effective ways to assist with symptom reduction, and using alcohol and other drugs often interfere (MHA, n.d).
