Robert Baden-Powell
Robert Baden Powell, respected veteran of many wars, General for the British Army, founder of
the scouting movement, and international spy? This question commonly surfaces when referring
the Baden Powell s book, My Adventures as a Spy, in which he writes what is sometimes
believed to be first hand accounts of his actions involving international espionage for the British
military during the time period from 1890 to 1893. He recalls many tasks assigned to him
including the collection of data on foreign military emplacements throughout the Mediterranean
counties and the French colony of Algeria. Issues begin to arise when you start digging in deeper
and comparing his own personal diary to the accounts portrayed in My Adventures as a Spy. Many
readers feel as though he glorified his involvement in international espionage prior to the start of
World War One, during the 1890s. Were his accounts authentic, or were they simply just a work of
adventurous fiction? Robert Stephenson Smyth Powell, was born February 22nd, 1857, to an
academic family, as his father was a professor at Oxford University (Hillcourt 6). Due to this
academic home environment, in 1870, at the age of thirteen, Powell began private schooling at the
well known Charterhouse in London (Hillcourt 21). It was at Charterhouse where Robert learned
the values of teamwork, as well as resourcefulness and many outdoor skills that would prove useful
in the future. After turning nineteen, Robert left Charterhouse for

American Sniper Story
American Sniper, a family favorite, is a newer movie made in 2015. Directed by Clint Eastwood
and based off of a true story that got more complicated after Chris Kyle himself told it in his
book, Bradley Cooper goes up and beyond as he plays as Navy SEAL, Christopher Scott Kyle.
This movie is filled with special effects and a twisting plot that draws the view in to guarantee it
will be not only watched, but loved from start to finish. From 1999 to 2009, he served for his
country. Chris s pinpoint shooting accuracy saved countless of lives on the battlefield, and for that
reason he became a legend. He was in four tours in the Iraq War and it is accounted that (according

The Idea Of A National Health Insurance System Essay
The idea of a national health insurance system can be traced back to President Teddy Roosevelt s
presidency in 1912 (A Brief History of Medicare in America). While he was campaigning to
become president his platform included health care reform, more specifically health care insurance
(A Brief History of Medicarein America). His idea never truly took off, but it remained on the
agendas for the presidents that would come after him. When President Truman s presidency took
place, he proposed the creation of a national health insurancefund that would be available to all
Americans (A Brief History of Medicare in America). He wanted this to be a program where
individuals could receive health coverage that would pay for a various amount of health services.
Truman s efforts to push for this healthcare reform was unsuccessful. The bill for this health
coverage did not pass. President John F. Kennedy s efforts for the creation of a health care program
for seniors was just as unsuccessful as Truman s attempt at individual health care coverage. It wasn
t until President Lyndon B. Johnsons presidency in 1965 that Medicare became law (A Brief
History of Medicare in America). Medicare is the largest health program in the country. This
program is government operated and provides health care coverage for over fifty five million
Americans that are over the age of 65 (A Brief History of Medicare in America). It also provides
coverage to over eight million Americans with disabilities

Education Is The Implementation Of A Standard Curriculum
Introduction One of the most significant and prevalent changes seen in education is the
implementation of a standard curriculum. Prior to this effort there were many ineffective
practices that occurred within the nation s schools. According to Girod, G.R., Girod, M (n.d.),
there was a time that students were measured on such things as a spelling test. If you spelled a
certain number of words correctly you were considered a good speller, but did that mean you
actually understood the context of the word or was it just memorization? Although there is much
debate as to whether or not standard curriculum is fair to all students given different learning
styles and aptitudes, in this paper I will go over the some of the important factors and benefits in
implementing a standard curriculum. I will also go over how one district in Tempe does exactly
this. The Importance of Curriculum at the District Level District frameworks are those that are
developed at a local or regional district level. If possible a curriculum committee will be
established at the local level to help address the issues coming from a higher level, according to
Berkas, N., Pattison, C. (2000). The benefit of such district level leadership is that it coordinates
and aligns the curriculum and assessment to ensure alignment with the state and district standards.
A further benefit is that teachers are trained and prepared to meet the higher expectations of the
state and district and to deliver a shared

In the 19th Century, The Government of Canada opened the first institution in 1876, for people

These individual may want their own freedom to do whatever they want to do especially drinking
or taking drugs. If they are on their own out there, they ll probably stop taking their prescribed
medications.
In reality, there are lots of families that are in crisis and when support or help are needed, there s no
choice within the community. People with disabilities and their families should not be forced to
select an institution, if they are disabled. They should have the choice to be treated in the comfort
of their own home.
There are many barriers that makes it hard to solve the problem and it is all because of insufficient
funding for programs. In Ontario, the average hourly rate for non medical home support, which
includes companionship and personal assistance, is $20 to $30. The clients that require nursing
visits or therapy cost about $50 $60.
Another problem is when some individuals with or without disability do not qualify for Social
Security or In home care Services. When this occurs, those people would have to remain in the
nursing home because there is no one who can help care for them.
We believe what we are proposing is going to make a difference because:
1.There s a need for programs for people with disabilities who do not need to be in an institution
and these programs had not been established.
2.It will expand on In home Care Services.
3.This program will help

The Effects Of Concussions On Nfl Players Essay
Preventing Concussions in NFL Players While the NFL is currently a very entertaining and popular
American past time, there is one issue that threatens the future of the game concussions.
Concussions affect 1.6 to 3.8 million athletes and children annually in the United States. Among
athletes, football is the most common sport involving risks of concussions for males, and soccer is
the most common sports with concussionrisks for females. The NFL has admitted that braintrauma
effects a third of all NFL players (Knowles.) Concussions have been part of the game since the
very beginning, but it s only in the past 50 years or so that medical science and the public has
become aware of the serious long term effects of concussions. The NFL is spending money on
researching the problem, because they have been sued from hundreds of players that have
suffered long term damage from concussions. The NFL needs to dedicate more money and
research into increasing helmet safety, implementing rules and policies to protect players, and
utilizing the best response treatment to prevent and protect players from concussions. Primarily,
a concussion is an injury to the brain, caused by a hit or fall. Sometimes a person will have
visible bruises, but sometimes there are no visible signs of a brain injury. A person does not have
to lose consciousness to have a concussion. Some people recover in a few hours, while others will
take weeks to recover. Symptoms include loss of

Chinese Foreign Policy
Does Chinese Foreign Policy reflect the concerns of a status quo power or a revisionist power?
INTRODUCTION
Before addressing this question, it is essential to establish what is meant by a status quo or
revisionist power. Hans Morgenthau described a status quo power as one that favours and aims to
maintain the distribution of power as it exists at a particular moment in history ,. Similarly,
proponents of power transition theory use the concept of the rules of the game regarding nations
power relations to define status quo and revisionist states, the latter desiring to redraft the rules out
of a general dissatisfaction with their share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An access denial strategy is therefore a core safeguard for China, being itself a continental power
neighbour to four states that possess nuclear weapons and surrounded by a perimeter of on going
conflicts. Furthermore, a maritime build up is desired not only for its strategic importance but also
to address the popular naval complex among the Chinese nationalist public who has often blamed
their country s defeats on their weak navy. It would, as figured by Chinese leaders, help correct
China s self consciousness as the only permanent member of UNSC that lacks naval capacity join
rescue missions and crisis interventions.
ECONOMY
It is widely perceived by the West that China s growing confidence is mainly attributed to its
growing economic power, which is also the issue area where Western observers notice a
particularly provocative tone, supporting their verdict with examples such as Wen Jiabao s
criticism of the US economic mismanagement or Chinese banks concerns over the dollar s
continued role as the international reserve currency . Meanwhile, Chinese leaders seem to retain a
firm grip on its domestic sphere through constraints upon foreign firms (suspected to have used
cyber attacks on these, although denied by Beijing), deliberate bias toward state owned companies
and rigid protection of the much criticised RMB. In the global scene, China is also pursuing a

ABSTRACT:
Cigarette smoking in pregnancy is a universal problem that compels us to continuously explore
different strategies aimed at increasing high quit rates in this population group. Maternal smoking
during pregnancy has been linked to increased risk of obstetric and foetal adverse outcomes.
Barriers to quitting are multi factorial and the approach needs to be versatile and patient specific,
taking into consideration the dynamics of ethnicity, psychosocial and socioeconomic status.
The aim of this paper is to highlight the different strategies that have been evaluated looking at
ways of enabling pregnant women to quit smoking. Furthermore, smoking cessation in special
population groups and global initiatives on smoking regulations are discussed. A database search of

Fiction 1950-1963 Rob Lapham Analysis
Fiction 1950 1963
Some people argue that, a step forward may bring great success by altering old ideas, such as
different means of literature, that have been accepted as a common norm for many decades.
Furthermore, advancements through new and diverse ideas may shape the world of literature and
writing on a global scale. In the article, Fiction 1950 1963, by Rob Latham, it is evident that even
when popular trends become overthrown by new styles and ideas; it may still bring success and a
curious audience to a new period of the science fiction genre.
When it comes to the topic of science fiction, Rob Latham argues that the pulp genre, which
defined science fiction for over two decades, had been superseded by a new movement of ideas
known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the downfall of the pulp genre in the late 1950 s, it has sprouted a new heritage of
science fiction which would be labeled as mainstream literature, and would also later make its way
to classrooms as legitimate objects of study. Rather than catering to magazine editors who
demanded specific ideological or accurate certainty, authors could begin to imagine themselves as
independent professionals with their own unique artistic visions. (Latham, 3). In other words,
Latham claims that the authors who were icons in the pulp genre had fled and had their places
taken by competent but largely second rank talents, (Latham, 9) who bring new ideas to the table.
Despite the rapid change, the New Wave movement presented new literary techniques and modes of
expression. (Ashley, Mike. Transformations. p251 252). The explosion of magazine markets and
the constant pressure for material to fill them made authors less cautious in their choices of what
they chose fill the market with. This inevitably opened up many doors for new genres, sparking
creativity and influence across the market. As Paul Boyer comments, the status of the genre rose.
(Boyer 1985: 257 8, 8). Through this, Latham is able to develop his argument and demonstrate
plausible support on the advancements of the magazine market and the science fiction genre

An Insight For Women s Struggle For Equality
An Insight to Women s Struggle for Equality: Good Country People
In her short film, Good Country People , at PBS.org; Global Voices, Tanya Hamilton addresses the
gender based bias toward women in the workplace. Hamilton uses the setting of her native born
home in St. Catharine s Parish, Spanish Town, Jamaica ( The Reel Deal ) to tell the story of a
young woman, Blossom Edwards, forced to take over her uncle s taxi business as the sole income
for the family. Edwards encounters much adversity in simply trying to make a day s wage for the
family. She is treated disrespectfully, passed over for business and placed in danger on top of
doing the task of taxi driver just to make ends meet. It is an excellent representation of women s ...

The main character, Blossom Edwards, is a young woman doing a traditionally man s job.
Edwards has to take over her uncle s taxi business to make ends meet for the family or they will do
without the basics necessities. Another instance of desperation Hamilton uses is of a young boy
trying to get a taxi ride on several occasions. We find he has to get home to take care of younger
siblings and, if need be, will walk many miles to do so. The body language of characters also
creates a sense of pathos throughout the piece. You can feel the discouragement, fear,
desperation and happiness without a single word from the characters. Danger is another
effective tool this filmmaker puts in place for her audience to create pathos. This is done with a
news bulletin on the radio about shootings, an attack on Edwards husband for wearing the wrong
color shirt, and an intense scene involving a roadblock by gunmen. But Hamilton gives us hope
too. Edwards finally gives the young boy a ride despite the danger that may be involved in doing
so. She also pays the gunmen at the roadblock to let her pass with the boy in her taxi rather than
leaving him to an uncertain fate at their hands. And when the election, the cause of all the tension,
is over luminaires are sent up to signal a new beginning. Keeping in mind, all the while this is all in
a day s work for a young woman trying to feed her family.

Ticking Tension and Silent Screams: Examining Sound in We Need To Talk About Kevin In
director Lynne Ramsay s We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011), dialogue serves as just one of
many modes of sound used to guide the narrative. Through a series of flashbacks and flash
forwards, orchestrated by diegetic and non diegetic sounds, the film follows Eva Khatchadourian
(Tilda Swinton), mother of baby Kevin (Ricky Duer) and, later, teenage Kevin (Ezra Miller), as
she recalls the influential events leading up to and the aftermath of Kevin murdering his peers and
family with his bow and arrow. While this gruesome film actually displays little violence on the
screen, the properties of sound create the horror and trepidation experienced by the audience.
Perceptual properties of sound, including loudness and timbre, internal diegetic sounds, Eva s
thoughts and sonic flashbacks, and the use of silence when viewing interactions between Eva and
Kevin, shape the audience s understanding of the film. The film employs on screen and off screen
diegetic sounds such as screaming, crying, and ticking and highlights objects/sounds which act as
motifs. Additionally, non diegetic sound created through the soundtrack lends a sense of irony to
different scenarios. While visuals and audio work together to create the film, sounds in particular
shape the spectator s perspective while allowing opportunities for further interpretation. In the

Michael Vey Quotes
I give the book Michael Vey 1 The Prisoner of Cell 25 5 out of 5 stars because it is action filled,

Why Is Jonbenet Ramsey Important
JonBenet Ramsey Annotated Bibliography Several huge and important celebrities have had
mysterious deaths. What happened? Was it an accident? Did someone kill them? If so, who killed
them? These are all important questions to think of when thinking of such a death. I researched
JonBenet Ramsey, a beauty pageant queen, whom was gorgeous, talented, and young. December
26, 1996, she was found murdered in the basement of her own home. The cause of deathwas
suffocation. According to policereports, JonBenet was found in the small room covered with a
blanket, her wrists were tied above her head, her mouth was covered with tape, and a nylon cord
was wrapped around her neck . There were also signs of sexual assault before she had been
murdered. In fact, that there was a possibility of her having been sexually assaulted more than
just right before her death. The prime suspects for the case were, of course, her parents. A note
was left behind prior to the finding of the body, stated that if the Ramsey s wanted to see their
daughter again that they would have to attain $ 1118,000 from Mr. Ramsey s account. This note

Through internal and external conflict, Jin Wang realizes his true self. The majority of conflict

the others, but his own negativity towards his different race pushes him to dislike being different
from others. Jin Wang craves to be just like everybody else instead of embracing who he is. This

How Did Isabella I Build A Country
Isabella I of Castile s Life During the late middle ages to the r enaissance, Isabella I of Castile was
a powerful queen of Spain. Have you ever thought of what it would be like to reconstruct a country?
Studying this important historical figure, I had uncovered many important and interesting facts
about Isabella I of Castile. During her reign, she brought stability to her empire as she decreased
nobles power. Queen Isabella I of Castile formed the most powerful empire in Europe,
ambitiously ruled her empire, and devoted herself to Christianity. Isabella I was born in April
22, 1451 into the royal family of John II of Castile and Isabella of Portugal in the town of
Madgrigal de las Altas Torres. After Isabella I s father died in 1454, her mother, Isabella of
Portugal, raised her. She had blonde hair with auburn and chestnut hues and a light skin tone
which was unusual because most Spanish ladies had dark hair and olive skin tone. She had
medium height for her era. Isabella I was a kind, intelligent and ambitious woman. When she was
younger, she was tutored by monks in poetry, music, philosophy, sewing and horseback riding.
She grew up regretted her absence of schooling so she learned Latin as a middle aged woman.

Kabuki Theater Essay
Kabuki Theater
*No Works Cited
Kabuki Theater was created around the year 1600. It was almost around the same time that the
English began to form colonies on the American continent. The history of Kabuki is as long as the
history of the United States.
Kabuki was created by a shrine maiden named Okuni. Okuni was from Izumo Shrine. Her
performances in the rive beds of the ancient capital of Kyoto caused a sensation. Soon their scale
increased and a number of competing companies started.
Early Kabuki was much different from what is seen today. It was consisted mostly of large group
dances performed by women. Most of these women acted as prostitutes off stage. Finally the
government banned women from the stage in an effort to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It was also during this period that the close relationship between Kabuki and the Bunraku puppet
theater began. The two would continue to grow while influencing each other.
The decades after the Genroku period saw numerous cycles of creative periods followed by
refinement. In the early 18th century, the rise of skilled playwrights in the Bunraku puppet
theater helped it to deprive Kabuki of popularity for a time. I t was remarked by one observer that
it seemed as though there was no Kabuki. Actors responded by adapting puppet plays for the stage
and creating stylized movements to mimic the puppets themselves. The late 18th century saw a
trend towards realism and the switch of the cultural center from Kyoto and Osaka to Edo. One
consequence of this was the change of tastes in onnagata acting. While onnagata trained in Kyoto
who had the soft, gentle nature of that city had been valued before, now audiences preferred those
who showed the strong pride and nature of Edo women. An increasing audience desire for
decadence as seen in the ghost plays and beautification of murder scenes marked early 19th century.
The opening of Japan to the West in 1868 affected Kabuki and the rest of the country profoundly.
Just when it thought it was free from government restrictions; Kabuki was faced with the challenge
to adapt to the changing world. Actors like Ichikawa Danjuro IX tried to raise the

present needs of consumers and businesses while preserving and enhancing the ability of future
generations to meet their needs (Kotler amp; Armstrong 2012, p. 582). The aim of sustainable
marketing is to satisfy the customer s the needs and wants while also putting high emphasis on the
environment and the social issues and thus creating profits in a socially responible way. Mention

Walmart constantly initiates sustainability initiatives which postively affects the customer s
environmental behaviors, employees and its suppliers. It also promotes sustainablity to its
employees by initiating personal sustainability project (PSP) where employees are committed to
responsible acts in front of their coworkers like from quitting smoking to replacing their lighting
system at their house with energy saving bulbs. Because Walmart operates under very stringent
environmentally focused practices they also enforce many laws to its suppliers to examine the
carbon life cycle of their products and change the way they manufacture, package and transport the
goods. This strategy saves Walmort extra costs which in turn reduce costs on the poducts they sell
and which adversely can save customers money. This creates a win win scenario for both Walmart

The Mayflower Rebellion
The first Pilgrims in America set sail from England on the Mayflower in September 1620. More
than 100 people were aboard the ship, many of them seeking religious freedom in the New
World. In November the ship landed on the shores of Cape Cod which in present day would be
called Massachusetts. The intended destination was near the Hudson River in Virginia, an already
established colony. They sent out a search party toward the end of December to look for the group
of passengers but the pilgrims had landed at Plymouth Harbor by mistake.
Originally there was another ship that set sail along with the Mayflower called the Speedwell. The
smaller vessel was not able to make the journey so it returned to port by September. A few
important people travelled on the Mayflower including Myles Standish, a soldier who became the
military leader of the new colony. Also, William Bradford whom founded the Plymouth Colonyand
was the leader of the Separatist congregation. The Mayflower Compact was signed by 41 men
while they were still on the Mayflower. The document would become the foundation of the new
colony s government. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soon after a long voyage of 65 days the ship finally reached the shores of Cape Cod. Most of the
settlers lived on the Mayflower and used a ferry to take passengers back and forth while

Burial Hill but was originally the home to the first fort and water tower. The first winter was
very bad and many did not survive due to the pilgrims not having enough food and warm living

William Bradford took over as governor and was reelected more than 30

The Iphone 6 And The Ipad 6
The world has become more technologically advanced than ever before. In today s society, people
have become overly concerned with keeping up with the newest and hottest gadgets on the market.
Like the majority of Americans, I never leave the house without my smartphone. People have
become reliant upon their phones as a form of communication, navigation, entertainment and much
more. September 2014, Apple CEO Tim Cook released two new, advanced smartphones, the iPhone
6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Apple fanatics, including myself, had been anticipating the launch of the
new phones for months. Several hardcore fanatics even lined up outside of Apple stores across the
nation anxious to hold Apple s latest release in their hands. [Apple s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus,
both smartphones with advanced computing capability, seem very similar; however, the two differ
in size, battery capability, screen resolution and price.]
The most noticeable difference between the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus is the size difference.
The iPhone 6 Plus is the larger of the two phones, leaving the iPhone 6 noticeably smaller. Both
phones differ in height, width, and weight; however, the depth of the phones is only 0.01 inch
different. The iPhone 6 height is 5.44 inches and its width is 2.64 inches. Its larger counterpart, the
iPhone 6 Plus, is 6.22 inches in height and 3.06 inches wide. Noticeably, the height difference is
exactly 0.78 inch and the width difference is 0.42 inch. The phones also differ in

The Election Process Of The Electoral College
In November, many Americans will trek to their designated polling place to cast their vote for the
next President of the United States. The U.S. government loves to preach that every vote matters,
and that citizens should not take that responsibility lightly. During the presidential election cycle,
states hold an open election in which all eligible citizens can participate. Citizens have the ability
to vote for a distinct ticket , which consists of candidates for Vice President and President. Most
Americans are relatively aware of this step in the voting process. What happens after this stage,
though, is not as well tacit. It is at this point in the election process that the Electoral Collegebegins
to take effect. The Electoral College is used in the same manner for 48 states; with the exception
of Maine and Nebraska. After each of the votes in these 48 states are tallied and counted, the
major political party with a candidate who won the majority vote in any of those states is
sanctioned to choose a panel of individuals who will cast the state s real vote for President. The
Electoral College comprises of these 538 electors. The number of electoral votes for a state is not
solely based on population, they are allocated based on their representation in Congress. This
means each state is given a minimum of 3 electoral votes (at least 1 representative and 2 senators)
regardless of the population size in the state. American citizens cast their vote for President in

users. Cost of NANO car should be competitive for all these segments.
2.3.3 Promotion Strategy
Tata admitted that, promoting and placing NANO car as world s cheapest car was to blame for
in failure in gaining success [11]. Positioning car is very important and it should give positive
impact for the customers. NANO car should be promoted as safe alternative to attract two

cheapest car to attract urban customers. Its price, safety and car image should be collectively
promoted to send a message to customers to be proud of having it. Social media also should be
used to for promotion.

TATA NANO will compete with two wheeler customers as well as small car users. It is important to

Summary OfHow Junk Food Can End Obesity
In How Junk Food Can End Obesity David H. Freedmen expresses the efforts of the fast food
corporations in giving healthier alternatives to their foods and explaining that wholesome foods
are not as good for a person as they may believe. Freedmen s article, uses research, first hand
accounts, and strong claims with detailed analysis. He gives the reader multiple sources for his
argument, and solutions to the problem of unhealthy eating, not open ended theories that do not
have any concrete evidence. Freedman uses firsthand accounts to convey that he s on the same
level as the reader, the problem does not just only affect them but also him. At the beginning of
the article he compares two healthy smoothies and that of a known to be unhealthy smoothie, I
finally hit the sweet spot just a few weeks later, in Chicago, with a delicious blueberry
pomegranate smoothie that rang in at a relatively modest 220 calories. It cost $3 and took only
seconds to make. (Freedman 507). Comparing products like a consumer gives Freedman
credibility. This comparison sets up the argument of that these healthy foods are not as healthy as
they claim to be. Interviewing big name food companies, small food companies, research labs,
among other groups and indaviduals, show that Freedman has a ligament point to get across. He
has done his research, the claims he is making are not just that of theoretical but of what food
experts believe and what they are actually doing to resolve the problems.

Coca Cola And The Popular Soft Drink
Have you ever seen one of the aesthetically pleasing Coca Cola advertisements? Chances are,
whether it was on a billboard, Super Bowl commercial, or internet pop up, you have seen the
classic Cola Cola logo. Recently, a new advertisement has leaked to the public, typically seen on t
shirts. Although the advertisement appears in the classic Coca Cola format, it boldly proclaims a
different product than the popular soft drink. In a non blasphemous analogy, the strange t shirt ad
celebrates both Coca Cola and JesusChrist s Presence in Holy Communion.
Before even an in depth look at the advertisement, one may be quick to conclude that the t shirt
bashes the mundanity of Coke, and instead, advocates a more extraordinary and spiritual food.
Coca Cola, with its finitude and temporary satisfaction, could never compare to the Bread of Life.
However, nowhere on the advertisement can one find any derogatory statement about Coca Cola.
Furthermore, just because Coca Cola (and all material goods) cannot be placed in the same genus
of the Eucharist does not necessarily mean they are dishonorable. From a theological point of
view, all things were created by God, and by virtue of their existence, they are good when
properly appropriated. And Coca Cola is a delicious drink enjoyed by many people! Therefore, it
can safely be assumed that the advertisement is a celebrated analogy, praising both the palatable
soda and Holy Communion, because they are, in fact, similar in a variety of

Theme Of Male Desire In Philadelphia Fire
Objects of Male Desire
In his novel, Philadelphia Fire, John Edgar Wideman takes on the task of reimagining the African
American male. While this role may seem daunting to some it was a challenge that Wideman
accepted. Through various forms of written and spoken language Wideman follows the male
narrative of Cudjoe as he tries to understand what happened on the day of the MOVE bombing.
Wideman challenges the reader s idea of a typical novel. He aims to give a new perspective on the
African American and does so in a unique and descriptive way. Wideman s re representation of the
African American male fails in a major way. The violation, objectification, and silencing of the
Euro American women in the novel prevents Wideman from changing the perspective the reader
has on African Americans (males specifically). On the back cover of Philadelphia Fire, the novel
is described as, ...the story of Cudjoe, a writer and exile who returns to his old neighborhood
after spending a decade fleeing from his past, and his search for the lone survivor of the fire a
young boy who was seen running from the flames. Based off this description, one would find it
hard to believe that much of the novel depicts Cudjoe oppressing women. To Cudjoe, women are
sexual objects. While on Mykonos he meets a dark haired woman and, She will teach him the
Greek for her body parts. (6) This woman is not given a name, and not given any direct dialogue.

Sartre s Existentialism
Shortcomings of Sartre s Existentialism
[1]Philosophy is the manner in which we describe the world around us. We develop our moral
code and way of life based off of this definition, so the philosophy that we adhere to is a guiding
factor in the way in which we live. In his speech Existentialism is a Humanism, Jean Paul Sartre
defends his philosophy, existentialism, against its critics by arguing that for human existence,
precedes essence (20) because we have free will. Due to this, our essence is constructed through
the actions we choose to take, so that one is no more than the sum of his parts (Sartre 37), making
each person responsible for themself. Sartre argues that this leads to anguish that people are
responsible for not just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As there is no deterministic god or destiny, people are the sole determiners of their actions,
according to Sartre, and thus fully responsible for them.
[3]Sartre argues that each action taken by a person is representative of his or her idea of the
proper way of life in that situation. He provides an example in support of this: if a person joins a
Christian trade union, surely then he or she must believe that being a Christian is the proper
lifestyle for all people, otherwise they would not advocate for it personally. Likewise, if a person
becomes a Communist, they must hold the belief that Communism is the best form of
government and should be instituted everywhere, otherwise they would not desire to live under
it (24). In addition, Sartre argues that people would never choose evil, but rather always good
(24), as it would be illogical to make a choice that is against their own interest. Therefore, when
making decisions, one is proclaiming what he or she believes is best for all people. The idea that
in choosing myself, I choose man (25) leads to an understanding of a vital component of
existentialism anguish.
[4]Anguish, defined by Sartre, is the realization that one s idea of how one should live is not just
limited to oneself, but extended to all humans. When one acts, they are declaring to the world their
ideal human image. After introspection, the grave realization that one has a grand responsibility to
all others thrusts a

pricing, and Federal Express followed same action in 1997. There is no denying that what actions
Airborne take is significant affecting the development of the company, while facing this big change
in industry.
Section 2: The problem/Opportunity: Airborne Express has long differentiated itself in the
market by structuring itself as a big business only carrier. They have specialized in large unit
deliveries through metropolitan areas. Everything they do is aimed to optimize the delivery
process and slash cost where ever possible. However, Airborne is now faced with a huge
decision. They must decide whether to step away from their differentiation strategy to match the
new pricing tactics of the market UPS and FedEx or to continue the old norm of delivery pricing.
The new distance based pricing strategy threatens Airborne s consistent strategy to cut prices.
Clients will seek to ship packages at the lowest cost. The short distance deliveries will be ruled by
UPS and FedEx since they are the once who are

The Importance Of Commercialization Of Hip Hop Culture
It is clear that the hip hop culture plays a huge role in the lives of many people. It has influenced
the way people dress, the way they talk, and the way they act. Unfortunately, many big
corporations have taken advantage of this and commercialized rap music in order to gain a
profit (Blair, 497). Commercialization is a very complex topic; however, it is important to
understand. This is because of the fact that when something becomes widely known, such a hip
hop and rap have, it is vulnerable to change (Phillips, paragraph 9). An example of this is when
author Nicole Phillips states, Hip hop became more about edge and less about the content of the
message. It became about sales.... (Phillips, paragraph 9). Therefore, in order to prevent any further
change, one needs to understand commercialization and how it works. This paper is going to
explore the complexities and nuances of commercialization of the hip hop culture. In order to do
this, this paper will consider what commercialization of hip hop culture entails. This paper will also
discuss how Elizabeth Blair, author of Commercialization of the Rap Music Subculture,
conceptualized commercialization, as well as how she discusses the situation in general. After
discussing these topics, the paper will move on to discussing cultural appropriation. This discussion
will include how authors describe cultural appropriation, and a debate regarding this topic. To begin,
in order to truly understand how complicated the

Social Class In The Victorian Age
The books of Dickens have a place completely with the philanthropic development of the
Victorian Age, of which they are, in fact, in the circle of fiction, by a wide margin an essential
item and expression. He was from first to last a writer for a reason. Dickens embarked to assault
some particular mishandle or misuse existing towards youngsters and ladies amid the Victorian
period. Amid the Modern Insurgency, the Victorian culture comprised of a hierarchical structure
include the privileged, trailed by the white collar class, the average workers and the ruined
underclass. These distinctive social classes could be recognized by disparities in territories, for
example, legislative issues, specialist, riches, training, culture, working and living conditions.
Individuals from the lower class were seen as nonsensical, juvenile, superstitious, ruthless,
exorbitantly sexual and tarnished. Because of the feebleness of the lower class people, they were
oppressed to misuse and treatment like that of creatures. In light of destitution, kids were
constrained into youngster work and compelled to act as fireplace sweepers, and they could slither
up the twelve by fourteen inch stacks, some as little as seven inches square, with the goal that they
would get out the yearly standard of forty gallons of sediment that was kept there. Some young
men moved toward becoming rodent catchers, and they were required to utilize arsenic to harm the
rats. However, as this could be costly, they could

Regulatory Bodies of the Education Sector
Explain the roles of regulatory bodies relevant to the education sector which exists to monitor the
legislative framework.
In this essay I plan to define what a regulatory body is, giving examples of the most prominent ones.
I will then highlight the regulatory bodies which are relevant to the education sector which exist to
monitor the legislative framework, with discussion of the role of each and how they affect the
school.
WHAT IS A REGULATORY BODY
A regulatory agency (also regulatory authority, regulatory body or regulator) is a public authority
or government agency responsible for exercising autonomous authority over some area of human
activity in a regulatory or supervisory capacity. An independent regulatory agency is a regulatory
agency that is independent from other branches or arms of the government. (Wikipedia)
Regulatory bodies are set up because there are laws and they ensure legislation is implemented.
Some of the most prominent regulatory bodies would be OFSTED, Office for Fair Trading, Food
Standards Agency, Advertising Standards, Financial Conduct Authority, Civil Aviation Authority,
and General Medical Council.
Regulatory bodies relevant to the education section include; Ofsted (Office for Standards in
Education)/ETI (Education and Training Inspectorate in Northern Ireland), Food Standards Agency,
Health and Safety Executive, Department of Education Northern Ireland/Dept for Education,
NICIE (Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education) and

Sante s Resume
Luc SantГ© s Resume is a personal account of cultural and socio economical changes throughout
Europe during the mid 20th century, and how they potentially correlated to impact his life. Resume
consists of nine different life summaries, each with introductory constants (Luc SantГ© birth
details, Lucien SantГ© s work history), before an opposing tale is expressed to conclude each
paragraph. These vary in positive and negative connotations, but the concluding argument SantГ© s
work puts forth aligns with the clichГ© that every action has a reaction . In essence, one slight
tweak in his life, or resume, starts a chain effect that differs each life from one another. SantГ©
constructs his own identityforemost, but also the identities of his parents... Show more content on

This repetitive identity can also be linked throughout the paragraphs, as opposing as they are, to
the text s primary themes. The importance of money is a constant in Resume, as paragraphs
beginning with SantГ© s father losing his job ends with his son struggling to survive, living in
poverty and fear, or performing criminal acts. In the two paragraphs in which Lucien SantГ© did
not fall out of an iron foundry job, Luc was educated and lived either a life of debauchery, or a
life as a Jesuit. The two vehemently opposed each other, but they both allowed Luc to live by
privileged means. This idea dictates that SantГ© believes the absence of parental income and
support almost consigns the child into a poor life near unchangeable, insinuating that SantГ© s
identity is one driven by pessimism.
SantГ© also constructs identities for his parents, the two individuals featured apart from himself.
He does this not by describing their characteristics and idiosyncrasies, but by stating the major
events they were involved in that eventually shaped his life. Often throughout Resume, SantГ©
describes how his parents shipped the family to a distant country, or at the very least away from
Verviers, inevitably failing in their quest to start a new, better life. It is also worth noting the one
time SantГ© s tale concludes as one of happiness and success, there is little parental involvement in
his choices

High School Band Research Paper
Auditioning for the Missouri State Band was a high school dream come true for me. The
countless hours of practice and dedication that I put into my audition material made me one of
the potential candidates to have a seat in the ensemble. To have gotten this far meant that I had
been selected to perform in my district band. However, the audition that I had passed for
admittance into my district band did not prepare me for the challenged that I had before me.
Behind the door leading into the audition room would be four adjudicators. Those four
adjudicators would decide my fate; would I be accepted or turned away? I had prepared for this
moment for six consecutive months, hours upon hours of practice. Every day I practiced the same

I got up from my seat on the floor against the lockers and walked into the room. Sitting at a table
facing the wall was a line of adjudicators who would judge my playing ability and determine
whether or not I pass. I placed my music on the lone stand in the middle of the room. My mouth
became dry and my hands started to shake more vigorously. I started to play. My first task was my
chromatic scale, every note that my instrument, clarinet, is capable of playing. Something that
outside the audition room that would otherwise seem elementary for me, however, I was
incapable of completing the whole exercise. My heart starting beating faster and faster, my
mouth still dry, my lungs feel as though they are failing. I continued through my audition, each
etude progressively getting worse than the previous. Finally, one judicator thanks me and I am
shown out through the door by the room monitor. Standing outside the door I felt a sense of
relief, but I also felt like a failure. I had spent hours preparing for this audition only to fail in a
matter of seconds. When the final callbacks were posted and my name was not listed I was
reminded yet again of my failure. However, I knew that this was not a true indication of my
musical talent. I was accepted in my district band and that is what I am still proud of

How Did Gordon Wood Characterize The American Revolution
1. Historians of the American Revolution have disagreed on whether to characterize the revolution
as radical or Conservative. Compare and contrast the arguments of Bernard Bailyn and Gordon
Wood and make and build an argument for which interpretation is most convincing.
Many historians throughout the history of our young nation have debated whether to characterize
the American Revolution as radical or conservative, and the argument still continues to this day.
Both arguments have points that are valid and convincing. The book the radicalism of the
American Revolution written by Gordon wood, and the book the ideological origins of the
American Revolution by Bernard bailyn are two examples of this argument. Gordon wood argues
that the American Revolution was much more than a fight for American independence, but rather
a radical sudden move that not only changed the political ideology of the colonies, but that also
had a great social impact on how people lived and thought of themselves as members of society
and where the entire way of life and society were changed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Importance Of Tragic Events In Mariatu s Life
Although I do not entirely relate to Mariatu or many of the tragic events that have occurred
during her life time, one event during Mariatu s life I do relate to is when she moved to Toronto.
Firstly, I relate to Mariatu during this event in her life because both Mariatu and I moved from
Africa to Canada. Now despite the fact that she moved to Toronto due to the war in her
homeland and moved at a much older age than I did , I do still believe we do relate in this
instance because we both had to leave our homelands that we were both very fond of so we could
receive a much better and more fair life. Also, as it states in the book Mariatu had a hard time
fitting into her new school. Although I did receive an educationin Africa and Mariatu did

Nazi Germany And Its Detrimental Effects On The Social...
When looking into the history of Germany and determining what led to the startling rise in
Nazism in Germany and its detrimental effects on the social outcasts in Europe, it can be easy to
deduce that the Nazi regime was one where Hitler walked in with his officials and took office by
force. The truth is that, while the Nazi partyis responsible for the atrocities that occurred before
and during WWII, they would have not gotten far if it hadn t been for the cooperation of the
German people themselves. Life in the Third Reich provides proof through voting, youth programs
and village life that the Nazi party rose into power with German support. In Village Life in Nazi
Germany, essayist Gerhard Wilke discusses the rise of Nazismin the small village of Korle,
discussing how with the rapid political changes in Germany from an empire to a democratic
nation also affected the power balances of small villages. Despite the efforts of the older
generations to keep some sort of semblance of the old traditions, it was their children who wanted
change and found themselves attracted to Nazism and formed the first local branch of the party in
1928. The reason for this, Wilke says is that they wanted radical solutions to three existential and
ideological problems: the survival of their generation as independent farmer, the preservation of
their political dominance, and the suppression of their enemies (The Jews and the working class).
And the youth of villages came together in

The LA Riots
The Change The LA Riots Brought
African Americans in Los Angeles and throughout the United States have experienced racial
oppression for centuries. Rodney King was an African American motorist who inspired positive
police reforms after he had a brutal conflict and was beaten by four members LAPD. Rodney King s
encounter resulted in a social and legal compromise because the incident made people aware of the
police brutality, gave African Americans a voice against police abuse, and resulted in reforms to the
way that the LAPD responded to the communities of color.
The Los Angeles Riots were the second Riots to happen after the Watts Riots. The L.A Riots took
place on April 9, 1992. The riots broke out in less than a day and lasted five days and killed more
than 50 people and left more than 2,000 injured. On April 30,1992, writers Richard A. Serrano
and Tracy Wilkinson wrote an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper saying hours after the
verdicts were announced, angry demonstrators torched, buildings, looted stores and assaulted
passerby as a civic leader pleaded for calm. (Serrano and Wilkinson 1) The riots started after the
verdict was given, people were filled with anger after the police were all acquitted of all charges.
Secondly, The riots helped bring a change to the African Americans because before the riots they
didn t have a voice, any protest or march they did didn t receive attention. When the riots happened,
they were heard, the search for attention had

Vaccines Do Not Cause Autism Essay
Vaccines have been used to prevent diseases for centuries, and have saved countless lives of
children and adults. The smallpox vaccine was invented as early as 1796, and since then the use
of vaccines has continued to protect us from countless life threatening diseases such as polio,
measles, and pertussis. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2010) assures that vaccines
are extensively tested by scientist to make sure they are effective and safe, and must receive the
approval of the Food and Drug Administration before being used. Perhaps the greatest success story
in public health is the reduction of infectious diseases due to the use of vaccines (CDC, 2010).

This led to the support of various unproven vaccine autism theories by parents in both the UK and
America. After findings of intestinal disease in children with autism, Wakefield claimed that
separating the MMR into three different vaccinations would be safer. Since then, Wakefield s
research has been discredited, he was charged with serious professional misconduct by the General
Medical Council for violating several ethical practices, and he was investigated for failing to
disclose conflict of interest a pending patent on a rival measles vaccine (Gross, 2009). Although
false, many still believe wholeheartedly that vaccines are harmful.
Wakefield s Study
In the 1998 article in the Lancet, Wakefield studied 12 children who, after a period of apparent
normality, lost acquired skills, including communication (Wakefield, Murch, Anthony, Linnell,
Casson, Malik, Berelowitz, Dhillon, Thomson, Harvey, Valentine, Davies, Walker Smith,1998). All
12 children were reported to show behavioral symptoms after receiving the vaccination. After
receiving the vaccination, the features associated with exposure collectively included fever
/delirium, rash, self injury, repetitive behavior, loss of self help, convulsion, gaze avoidance,
diarrhea, disinterest, lack of play, vomiting, and recurrent viral pneumonia. In 8 of the 12 children,
the beginning of behavioral problems was linked to the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination by
either the parents or by the child s

Evaluation Of A Company s Plans For A Specified Future...
According to our text a budget is a formal written statement of management s plans for a specified
future time period, expressed in financial terms. An effective budget gives a company command
and control over financial resources. It helps a company to plan and achieve their strategic and
organizational goals. There are many reasons for a company to prepare and manage a budget, such
as assisting with performance evaluations and identifying possible constraints and limitations.
The budget is an important basis for evaluating performance. It can provide benchmarks against
which to judge success or failure in reaching goals and facilitates timely corrective measures.
Budgeting forms the baseline for a company s future performance. Managers create the budget
anticipating financial conditions and market expectations for future periods. These managers
calculate revenues and expenses for the period being budgeted. When the period reflected in the
budget arrives, the managers compare actual expenses to the budget numbers and evaluate the
department s performance.
Another advantage of budgets is that they can be instrumental in identifying constraints and
bottlenecks. The earlier example of the power plant well illustrated this point. Efficient operation
of the power plant was limited by the supply of natural gas. A carefully developed budget will
always consider capacity constraints. Managers can learn well in advance of looming production
and distribution bottlenecks.

The Anatomy Of Melancholy By Robert Burton
Introduction
When an individual feels sad, hopeless, discouraged, troubled, or withdrawn from their usual
interests and daily living for a short period of time, it is depression. On the other hand, when these
feelings heavily impact daily activities and bring severe and long lasting psychological pain, this is
major depressive disorder (MDD). In addition to major depressive disorder identified as MDD, it
may be referred to as unipolar depression, major depression, or clinical depression.
According to Nemade, Reiss, and Dombeck (2013) the history of depression dates back as early as
the second millennium B.C.; initially depression was referred as melancholia. It was thought all
mental illnesses were caused by possessions of the devil. In addition, depression was understood as
a spiritual (or mental) illness rather than a physical one (Nemade et al., 2013).
Depression was described by a Robert Burton by social and psychological causes, in his
published work titled the Anatomy of Melancholy. Dated in the early 1600s, Burton s work
provided recommendations and treatments for depression. Research by Gruenberg, Goldstein, and
Pincus (2005) show major depressive disorder was termed in the mid 1970s for the Feigner Criteria
which lead to the DSM III (p. 3).
Furthermore, major depressive disorder became defined by specific diagnostic criteria and change
in terminology providing distinction from bipolar disorder (Gruenberg et al., 2005, p. 3). In 1980,
MDD was found in the DSM

Reflection Paper On Group Work
COMS2103 was a great experience for me. In the past, I have had very negative group experience.
This was from a lack of attendance by other group members, lack of communication, and simply a
lack of work ethic. I was hesitant before joining COMS2103 because of my past experiences, but I
am so glad I stuck with it. My groupwas very pleasant to work with and I felt less stressed than
before in other group settings. As this course comes to an end, I am pleased with how our group
worked together and I cannot wait to work with them again in COMS2105. With this being a
Community Studies course, it was assumed that there was going to be a lot of group work. Of
course, this turned out to be true. Like I have said above, I was really nervous to be thrown into
group work again. This time was different, though. On the first day of class, we spent some time
getting to know each other. It turned out that many of us were from the same area and focusing
on the same aspects in school. I even knew Patti and Sam from COMS1100, but there was still
some catching up to do. A few of our group members are from other parts of the province, and
even as far as Ontario. This fact was interesting during discussions as we had a few cultural
differences . Beginning any project with this group was never an issue. Somebody was always
ready to start the conversation and the rest of the group was always just as willing and comfortable
to contribute to the conversation. In our group contract, we had an

A Clean, Well-lighted Place Essay
The main character in A Clean, Well Lighted Place, written by Ernest Hemingway, is the old man.
The old man, who remains nameless throughout the short story, comes to the cafГ© for the light it
provides him against the dark night. He stays late into the night, and sits In the shadow the leaves
of the tree made against the electric light. The old man is deaf and finds comfort in the difference
he feels inside the quiet cafГ©. The old man struggles with old age and the feeling of nothingness
which is representative of the darkness outside of the cafГ©. The well lit cafГ© represents order

is alone in the world. He realizes that it is important to keep a clean, well lit cafГ© open for people
like the old man who can not sleep. The older waiter recognizes the difference in his cafГ© and
that of a dark bar or bodega. He knows that Light was all it needed and a certain cleanness and
order. He is reluctant to close up because there may be someone who needs the cafГ©. The
reader finds out at the end of the story that the waiter is like the old man in need of light and
cleanness, when he goes to a bar after closing and comments that although The light is very
bright and pleasant but the bar is unpolished. The waiter blames it on insomnia, but he like the

  • 2. Robert Baden-Powell Robert Baden Powell, respected veteran of many wars, General for the British Army, founder of the scouting movement, and international spy? This question commonly surfaces when referring the Baden Powell s book, My Adventures as a Spy, in which he writes what is sometimes believed to be first hand accounts of his actions involving international espionage for the British military during the time period from 1890 to 1893. He recalls many tasks assigned to him including the collection of data on foreign military emplacements throughout the Mediterranean counties and the French colony of Algeria. Issues begin to arise when you start digging in deeper and comparing his own personal diary to the accounts portrayed in My Adventures as a Spy. Many readers feel as though he glorified his involvement in international espionage prior to the start of World War One, during the 1890s. Were his accounts authentic, or were they simply just a work of adventurous fiction? Robert Stephenson Smyth Powell, was born February 22nd, 1857, to an academic family, as his father was a professor at Oxford University (Hillcourt 6). Due to this academic home environment, in 1870, at the age of thirteen, Powell began private schooling at the well known Charterhouse in London (Hillcourt 21). It was at Charterhouse where Robert learned the values of teamwork, as well as resourcefulness and many outdoor skills that would prove useful in the future. After turning nineteen, Robert left Charterhouse for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This movie is filled with special effects and a twisting plot that draws the view in to guarantee it will be not only watched, but loved from start to finish. From 1999 to 2009, he served for his country. Chris s pinpoint shooting accuracy saved countless of lives on the battlefield, and for that reason he became a legend. • 4. The Idea Of A National Health Insurance System Essay The idea of a national health insurance system can be traced back to President Teddy Roosevelt s presidency in 1912 (A Brief History of Medicare in America). While he was campaigning to become president his platform included health care reform, more specifically health care insurance (A Brief History of Medicarein America). His idea never truly took off, but it remained on the agendas for the presidents that would come after him. When President Truman s presidency took place, he proposed the creation of a national health insurancefund that would be available to all Americans (A Brief History of Medicare in America). He wanted this to be a program where individuals could receive health coverage that would pay for a various amount of health services. Truman s efforts to push for this healthcare reform was unsuccessful. The bill for this health coverage did not pass. President John F. Kennedy s efforts for the creation of a health care program for seniors was just as unsuccessful as Truman s attempt at individual health care coverage. It wasn t until President Lyndon B. Johnsons presidency in 1965 that Medicare became law (A Brief History of Medicare in America). Medicare is the largest health program in the country. This program is government operated and provides health care coverage for over fifty five million Americans that are over the age of 65 (A Brief History of Medicare in America). It also provides coverage to over eight million Americans with disabilities ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Education Is The Implementation Of A Standard Curriculum Introduction One of the most significant and prevalent changes seen in education is the implementation of a standard curriculum. Prior to this effort there were many ineffective practices that occurred within the nation s schools. According to Girod, G.R., Girod, M (n.d.), there was a time that students were measured on such things as a spelling test. If you spelled a certain number of words correctly you were considered a good speller, but did that mean you actually understood the context of the word or was it just memorization? Although there is much debate as to whether or not standard curriculum is fair to all students given different learning styles and aptitudes, in this paper I will go over the some of the important factors and benefits in implementing a standard curriculum. I will also go over how one district in Tempe does exactly this. The Importance of Curriculum at the District Level District frameworks are those that are developed at a local or regional district level. If possible a curriculum committee will be established at the local level to help address the issues coming from a higher level, according to Berkas, N., Pattison, C. (2000). The benefit of such district level leadership is that it coordinates and aligns the curriculum and assessment to ensure alignment with the state and district standards. A further benefit is that teachers are trained and prepared to meet the higher expectations of the state and district and to deliver a shared ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These individual may want their own freedom to do whatever they want to do especially drinking or taking drugs. If they are on their own out there, they ll probably stop taking their prescribed medications. In reality, there are lots of families that are in crisis and when support or help are needed, there s no choice within the community. People with disabilities and their families should not be forced to select an institution, if they are disabled. They should have the choice to be treated in the comfort of their own home. There are many barriers that makes it hard to solve the problem and it is all because of insufficient funding for programs. In Ontario, the average hourly rate for non medical home support, which includes companionship and personal assistance, is $20 to $30. The clients that require nursing visits or therapy cost about $50 $60. Another problem is when some individuals with or without disability do not qualify for Social

The Effects Of Concussions On Nfl Players Essay Preventing Concussions in NFL Players While the NFL is currently a very entertaining and popular American past time, there is one issue that threatens the future of the game concussions. Concussions affect 1.6 to 3.8 million athletes and children annually in the United States. Among athletes, football is the most common sport involving risks of concussions for males, and soccer is the most common sports with concussionrisks for females. The NFL has admitted that braintrauma effects a third of all NFL players (Knowles.) Concussions have been part of the game since the very beginning, but it s only in the past 50 years or so that medical science and the public has become aware of the serious long term effects of concussions. The NFL is spending money on researching the problem, because they have been sued from hundreds of players that have suffered long term damage from concussions. The NFL needs to dedicate more money and research into increasing helmet safety, implementing rules and policies to protect players, and utilizing the best response treatment to prevent and protect players from concussions. Primarily, a concussion is an injury to the brain, caused by a hit or fall. Sometimes a person will have visible bruises, but sometimes there are no visible signs of a brain injury. INTRODUCTION Before addressing this question, it is essential to establish what is meant by a status quo or revisionist power. Hans Morgenthau described a status quo power as one that favours and aims to maintain the distribution of power as it exists at a particular moment in history ,. Similarly, proponents of power transition theory use the concept of the rules of the game regarding nations power relations to define status quo and revisionist states, the latter desiring to redraft the rules out of a general dissatisfaction with their share ... An access denial strategy is therefore a core safeguard for China, being itself a continental power neighbour to four states that possess nuclear weapons and surrounded by a perimeter of on going conflicts. Furthermore, a maritime build up is desired not only for its strategic importance but also to address the popular naval complex among the Chinese nationalist public who has often blamed their country s defeats on their weak navy. It would, as figured by Chinese leaders, help correct China s self consciousness as the only permanent member of UNSC that lacks naval capacity join rescue missions and crisis interventions. ECONOMY It is widely perceived by the West that China s growing confidence is mainly attributed to its growing economic power, which is also the issue area where Western observers notice a particularly provocative tone, supporting their verdict with examples such as Wen Jiabao s criticism of the US economic mismanagement or Chinese banks concerns over the dollar s continued role as the international reserve currency . Meanwhile, Chinese leaders seem to retain a firm grip on its domestic sphere through constraints upon foreign firms (suspected to have used cyber attacks on these, although denied by Beijing), deliberate bias toward state owned companies and rigid protection of the much criticised RMB. • 12. Fiction 1950-1963 Rob Lapham Analysis Fiction 1950 1963 Some people argue that, a step forward may bring great success by altering old ideas, such as different means of literature, that have been accepted as a common norm for many decades. Furthermore, advancements through new and diverse ideas may shape the world of literature and writing on a global scale. In the article, Fiction 1950 1963, by Rob Latham, it is evident that even when popular trends become overthrown by new styles and ideas; it may still bring success and a curious audience to a new period of the science fiction genre. When it comes to the topic of science fiction, Rob Latham argues that the pulp genre, which defined science fiction for over two decades, had been superseded by a new movement of ideas known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Following the downfall of the pulp genre in the late 1950 s, it has sprouted a new heritage of science fiction which would be labeled as mainstream literature, and would also later make its way to classrooms as legitimate objects of study. Rather than catering to magazine editors who demanded specific ideological or accurate certainty, authors could begin to imagine themselves as independent professionals with their own unique artistic visions. (Latham, 3). In other words, Latham claims that the authors who were icons in the pulp genre had fled and had their places taken by competent but largely second rank talents, (Latham, 9) who bring new ideas to the table. Despite the rapid change, the New Wave movement presented new literary techniques and modes of expression. (Ashley, Mike. Transformations. p251 252). The explosion of magazine markets and the constant pressure for material to fill them made authors less cautious in their choices of what they chose fill the market with. This inevitably opened up many doors for new genres, sparking creativity and influence across the market. As Paul Boyer comments, the status of the genre rose. (Boyer 1985: 257 8, 8). Through this, Latham is able to develop his argument and demonstrate plausible support on the advancements of the magazine market and the science fiction genre ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. An Insight For Women s Struggle For Equality An Insight to Women s Struggle for Equality: Good Country People In her short film, Good Country People , at PBS.org; Global Voices, Tanya Hamilton addresses the gender based bias toward women in the workplace. Hamilton uses the setting of her native born home in St. Catharine s Parish, Spanish Town, Jamaica ( The Reel Deal ) to tell the story of a young woman, Blossom Edwards, forced to take over her uncle s taxi business as the sole income for the family. Edwards encounters much adversity in simply trying to make a day s wage for the family. She is treated disrespectfully, passed over for business and placed in danger on top of doing the task of taxi driver just to make ends meet. It is an excellent representation of women s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main character, Blossom Edwards, is a young woman doing a traditionally man s job. Edwards has to take over her uncle s taxi business to make ends meet for the family or they will do without the basics necessities. Another instance of desperation Hamilton uses is of a young boy trying to get a taxi ride on several occasions. We find he has to get home to take care of younger siblings and, if need be, will walk many miles to do so. The body language of characters also creates a sense of pathos throughout the piece. You can feel the discouragement, fear, desperation and happiness without a single word from the characters. Danger is another effective tool this filmmaker puts in place for her audience to create pathos. This is done with a news bulletin on the radio about shootings, an attack on Edwards husband for wearing the wrong color shirt, and an intense scene involving a roadblock by gunmen. But Hamilton gives us hope too. Edwards finally gives the young boy a ride despite the danger that may be involved in doing so. She also pays the gunmen at the roadblock to let her pass with the boy in her taxi rather than leaving him to an uncertain fate at their hands. And when the election, the cause of all the tension, is over luminaires are sent up to signal a new beginning. Keeping in mind, all the while this is all in a day s work for a young woman trying to feed her family. Overcoming gender biases toward women and girls ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ticking Tension And Silent Screams Sara Frank Dr. Schreiber Film 270 23 October 2016 Ticking Tension and Silent Screams: Examining Sound in We Need To Talk About Kevin In director Lynne Ramsay s We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011), dialogue serves as just one of many modes of sound used to guide the narrative. Through a series of flashbacks and flash forwards, orchestrated by diegetic and non diegetic sounds, the film follows Eva Khatchadourian (Tilda Swinton), mother of baby Kevin (Ricky Duer) and, later, teenage Kevin (Ezra Miller), as she recalls the influential events leading up to and the aftermath of Kevin murdering his peers and family with his bow and arrow. While this gruesome film actually displays little violence on the screen, the properties of sound create the horror and trepidation experienced by the audience. Perceptual properties of sound, including loudness and timbre, internal diegetic sounds, Eva s thoughts and sonic flashbacks, and the use of silence when viewing interactions between Eva and Kevin, shape the audience s understanding of the film. The film employs on screen and off screen diegetic sounds such as screaming, crying, and ticking and highlights objects/sounds which act as motifs. Additionally, non diegetic sound created through the soundtrack lends a sense of irony to different scenarios. While visuals and audio work together to create the film, sounds in particular shape the spectator s perspective while allowing opportunities for further interpretation. In the opening ... Michael Vey Quotes I give the book Michael Vey 1 The Prisoner of Cell 25 5 out of 5 stars because it is action filled, the main character goes through many different emotions, and because it has many unexpected turns. Michael s best friend, Ostin Liss, and newfound friend, cheerleader TaylorRidley accidentally discover something, and find out there are others with similar powers. They also find out someone, or something, is hunting them and have hunted the others like them. I have some bad news, honey. Your mother s gone. I looked at her blankly. What do you mean? The police believe she s been kidnapped, Mr. Liss said. My heart froze. Kidnapped? I think this quote shows an example of alarm when Michael finds out his mom has been kidnapped. On page 11 it says, As I sat down, Taylor Ridley, who sat in the desk to my left, turned and smiled at me. Taylor is a cheerleader and one of the prettiest girls at Meridian. Heck, she s one of the prettiest girls in any high school anywhere in the world. I chose this quote because it shows how affectionate Michael is, at the beginning of the book, when it comes to Taylor Ridley or just thinking about her. On page 35 it says, Stop it, I said. Make me. Did someone kill them? If so, who killed them? These are all important questions to think of when thinking of such a death. I researched JonBenet Ramsey, a beauty pageant queen, whom was gorgeous, talented, and young. December 26, 1996, she was found murdered in the basement of her own home. The cause of deathwas suffocation. According to policereports, JonBenet was found in the small room covered with a blanket, her wrists were tied above her head, her mouth was covered with tape, and a nylon cord was wrapped around her neck . There were also signs of sexual assault before she had been murdered. In fact, that there was a possibility of her having been sexually assaulted more than just right before her death. The prime suspects for the case were, of course, her parents. A note was left behind prior to the finding of the body, stated that if the Ramsey s wanted to see their daughter again that they would have to attain $ 1118,000 from Mr. Ramsey s account. It was also during this period that the close relationship between Kabuki and the Bunraku puppet theater began. The two would continue to grow while influencing each other. The decades after the Genroku period saw numerous cycles of creative periods followed by refinement. In the early 18th century, the rise of skilled playwrights in the Bunraku puppet theater helped it to deprive Kabuki of popularity for a time. I t was remarked by one observer that it seemed as though there was no Kabuki. Actors responded by adapting puppet plays for the stage and creating stylized movements to mimic the puppets themselves. The late 18th century saw a trend towards realism and the switch of the cultural center from Kyoto and Osaka to Edo. One consequence of this was the change of tastes in onnagata acting. While onnagata trained in Kyoto who had the soft, gentle nature of that city had been valued before, now audiences preferred those who showed the strong pride and nature of Edo women. An increasing audience desire for decadence as seen in the ghost plays and beautification of murder scenes marked early 19th century. The opening of Japan to the West in 1868 affected Kabuki and the rest of the country profoundly. • 37. Coca Cola And The Popular Soft Drink Have you ever seen one of the aesthetically pleasing Coca Cola advertisements? Chances are, whether it was on a billboard, Super Bowl commercial, or internet pop up, you have seen the classic Cola Cola logo. Recently, a new advertisement has leaked to the public, typically seen on t shirts. Although the advertisement appears in the classic Coca Cola format, it boldly proclaims a different product than the popular soft drink. In a non blasphemous analogy, the strange t shirt ad celebrates both Coca Cola and JesusChrist s Presence in Holy Communion. Before even an in depth look at the advertisement, one may be quick to conclude that the t shirt bashes the mundanity of Coke, and instead, advocates a more extraordinary and spiritual food. Coca Cola, with its finitude and temporary satisfaction, could never compare to the Bread of Life. However, nowhere on the advertisement can one find any derogatory statement about Coca Cola. Furthermore, just because Coca Cola (and all material goods) cannot be placed in the same genus of the Eucharist does not necessarily mean they are dishonorable. From a theological point of view, all things were created by God, and by virtue of their existence, they are good when properly appropriated. And Coca Cola is a delicious drink enjoyed by many people! Therefore, it can safely be assumed that the advertisement is a celebrated analogy, praising both the palatable soda and Holy Communion, because they are, in fact, similar in a variety of ... • 38. Theme Of Male Desire In Philadelphia Fire Objects of Male Desire In his novel, Philadelphia Fire, John Edgar Wideman takes on the task of reimagining the African American male. While this role may seem daunting to some it was a challenge that Wideman accepted. Through various forms of written and spoken language Wideman follows the male narrative of Cudjoe as he tries to understand what happened on the day of the MOVE bombing. Wideman challenges the reader s idea of a typical novel. He aims to give a new perspective on the African American and does so in a unique and descriptive way. Wideman s re representation of the African American male fails in a major way. The violation, objectification, and silencing of the Euro American women in the novel prevents Wideman from changing the perspective the reader has on African Americans (males specifically). On the back cover of Philadelphia Fire, the novel is described as, ...the story of Cudjoe, a writer and exile who returns to his old neighborhood after spending a decade fleeing from his past, and his search for the lone survivor of the fire a young boy who was seen running from the flames. Based off this description, one would find it hard to believe that much of the novel depicts Cudjoe oppressing women. To Cudjoe, women are sexual objects. We develop our moral code and way of life based off of this definition, so the philosophy that we adhere to is a guiding factor in the way in which we live. In his speech Existentialism is a Humanism, Jean Paul Sartre defends his philosophy, existentialism, against its critics by arguing that for human existence, precedes essence (20) because we have free will. Due to this, our essence is constructed through the actions we choose to take, so that one is no more than the sum of his parts (Sartre 37), making each person responsible for themself. As there is no deterministic god or destiny, people are the sole determiners of their actions, according to Sartre, and thus fully responsible for them. [3]Sartre argues that each action taken by a person is representative of his or her idea of the proper way of life in that situation. He provides an example in support of this: if a person joins a Christian trade union, surely then he or she must believe that being a Christian is the proper lifestyle for all people, otherwise they would not advocate for it personally. Likewise, if a person becomes a Communist, they must hold the belief that Communism is the best form of government and should be instituted everywhere, otherwise they would not desire to live under it (24). In addition, Sartre argues that people would never choose evil, but rather always good (24), as it would be illogical to make a choice that is against their own interest. Therefore, when making decisions, one is proclaiming what he or she believes is best for all people. The idea that in choosing myself, I choose man (25) leads to an understanding of a vital component of existentialism anguish. [4]Anguish, defined by Sartre, is the realization that one s idea of how one should live is not just limited to oneself, but extended to all humans. When one acts, they are declaring to the world their ideal human image. After introspection, the grave realization that one has a grand responsibility to all others thrusts a ... It has influenced the way people dress, the way they talk, and the way they act. Unfortunately, many big corporations have taken advantage of this and commercialized rap music in order to gain a profit (Blair, 497). Commercialization is a very complex topic; however, it is important to understand. This is because of the fact that when something becomes widely known, such a hip hop and rap have, it is vulnerable to change (Phillips, paragraph 9). An example of this is when author Nicole Phillips states, Hip hop became more about edge and less about the content of the message. It became about sales.... (Phillips, paragraph 9). Therefore, in order to prevent any further change, one needs to understand commercialization and how it works. This paper is going to explore the complexities and nuances of commercialization of the hip hop culture. In order to do this, this paper will consider what commercialization of hip hop culture entails. This paper will also discuss how Elizabeth Blair, author of Commercialization of the Rap Music Subculture, conceptualized commercialization, as well as how she discusses the situation in general. After discussing these topics, the paper will move on to discussing cultural appropriation. This discussion will include how authors describe cultural appropriation, and a debate regarding this topic. To begin, in order to truly understand how complicated the ... Individuals from the lower class were seen as nonsensical, juvenile, superstitious, ruthless, exorbitantly sexual and tarnished. In light of destitution, kids were constrained into youngster work and compelled to act as fireplace sweepers, and they could slither up the twelve by fourteen inch stacks, some as little as seven inches square, with the goal that they would get out the yearly standard of forty gallons of sediment that was kept there. These vary in positive and negative connotations, but the concluding argument SantГ© s work puts forth aligns with the clichГ© that every action has a reaction . The importance of money is a constant in Resume, as paragraphs beginning with SantГ© s father losing his job ends with his son struggling to survive, living in poverty and fear, or performing criminal acts. In the two paragraphs in which Lucien SantГ© did not fall out of an iron foundry job, Luc was educated and lived either a life of debauchery, or a life as a Jesuit. The two vehemently opposed each other, but they both allowed Luc to live by privileged means. This idea dictates that SantГ© believes the absence of parental income and support almost consigns the child into a poor life near unchangeable, insinuating that SantГ© s identity is one driven by pessimism. SantГ© also constructs identities for his parents, the two individuals featured apart from himself. He does this not by describing their characteristics and idiosyncrasies, but by stating the major events they were involved in that eventually shaped his life. Often throughout Resume, SantГ© describes how his parents shipped the family to a distant country, or at the very least away from Verviers, inevitably failing in their quest to start a new, better life. When looking into the history of Germany and determining what led to the startling rise in Nazism in Germany and its detrimental effects on the social outcasts in Europe, it can be easy to deduce that the Nazi regime was one where Hitler walked in with his officials and took office by force. The truth is that, while the Nazi partyis responsible for the atrocities that occurred before and during WWII, they would have not gotten far if it hadn t been for the cooperation of the German people themselves. Life in the Third Reich provides proof through voting, youth programs and village life that the Nazi party rose into power with German support. In Village Life in Nazi Germany, essayist Gerhard Wilke discusses the rise of Nazismin the small village of Korle, discussing how with the rapid political changes in Germany from an empire to a democratic nation also affected the power balances of small villages. Despite the efforts of the older generations to keep some sort of semblance of the old traditions, it was their children who wanted change and found themselves attracted to Nazism and formed the first local branch of the party in 1928. The reason for this, Wilke says is that they wanted radical solutions to three existential and ideological problems: the survival of their generation as independent farmer, the preservation of their political dominance, and the suppression of their enemies (The Jews and the working class). • 52. Evaluation Of A Company s Plans For A Specified Future... According to our text a budget is a formal written statement of management s plans for a specified future time period, expressed in financial terms. An effective budget gives a company command and control over financial resources. It helps a company to plan and achieve their strategic and organizational goals. There are many reasons for a company to prepare and manage a budget, such as assisting with performance evaluations and identifying possible constraints and limitations. The budget is an important basis for evaluating performance. It can provide benchmarks against which to judge success or failure in reaching goals and facilitates timely corrective measures. Budgeting forms the baseline for a company s future performance. Managers create the budget anticipating financial conditions and market expectations for future periods. These managers calculate revenues and expenses for the period being budgeted. When the period reflected in the budget arrives, the managers compare actual expenses to the budget numbers and evaluate the department s performance. Another advantage of budgets is that they can be instrumental in identifying constraints and bottlenecks. The earlier example of the power plant well illustrated this point. Efficient operation of the power plant was limited by the supply of natural gas. A carefully developed budget will always consider capacity constraints. Managers can learn well in advance of looming production and distribution bottlenecks. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. The Anatomy Of Melancholy By Robert Burton Introduction When an individual feels sad, hopeless, discouraged, troubled, or withdrawn from their usual interests and daily living for a short period of time, it is depression. On the other hand, when these feelings heavily impact daily activities and bring severe and long lasting psychological pain, this is major depressive disorder (MDD). In addition to major depressive disorder identified as MDD, it may be referred to as unipolar depression, major depression, or clinical depression. According to Nemade, Reiss, and Dombeck (2013) the history of depression dates back as early as the second millennium B.C.; initially depression was referred as melancholia. It was thought all mental illnesses were caused by possessions of the devil. In addition, depression was understood as a spiritual (or mental) illness rather than a physical one (Nemade et al., 2013). Depression was described by a Robert Burton by social and psychological causes, in his published work titled the Anatomy of Melancholy. Dated in the early 1600s, Burton s work provided recommendations and treatments for depression. Research by Gruenberg, Goldstein, and Pincus (2005) show major depressive disorder was termed in the mid 1970s for the Feigner Criteria which lead to the DSM III (p. 3). Furthermore, major depressive disorder became defined by specific diagnostic criteria and change in terminology providing distinction from bipolar disorder (Gruenberg et al., 2005, p. 3).
