Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is caused by several species of parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. There are two main types - intestinal schistosomiasis caused by S. mansoni, S. japonicum, S. mekongi, and S. intercalatum, and urogenital schistosomiasis caused by S. haematobium. The parasites are transmitted through contact with fresh water in tropical and subtropical areas where the snail hosts live. Symptoms depend on the species but include abdominal pain, blood in the urine or stool, fibrosis of organs, and infertility. Praziquantel
