Sonnet 18 By William Shakespeare
SONNET 18 BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
William Shakespeare wrote Sonnet 18 as part of a sequence of 154 sonnets. Also known as Shall I
Compare Thee? Sonnet 18 has become one of his most well loved poems. Shakespeare includes
symbols of time, decay and eternity within this work. The speaker explicates his unending love for his
beloved and how it will live on after death. The first quatrain introduces the personification of
summer.
The speaker begins the sonnet by asking if he can compare his friend to a warm, summer day. A brief
statement stating how lovely and temperate thee is follows this rhetorical question. Rough winds do
shake the darling buds of May, Shakespeare s first example of personification, says that strong winds
can hurt the new flower buds and summer s lease hath all too short a date, explains that the season
does not last long. The mention of a lease refers to the fact that summer must end.
The personification of nature is even more evident in the second quatrain. This time the sun is named
the eye of heaven. The speaker also suggests that the sun is sometimes hidden. Additionally, it is said
that everything that has beauty will fade. This may be by chance or by inevitable time. Shakespeare
uses the word untrimm d to refer to these fair things as losing their decorations, or trimmings.
However, the speaker has changed the overall tone at the beginning of the third quatrain. Moving
away from the beautiful description of summer, the speaker explains

Shirley Chisholm Speech
Did you know, before Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama there was Shirley Chisholm. Shirley
Chisholm was an African American female congresswoman who ran for the presidency in 1972, as a
Democrat. When she ran for presidency she didn t run for the blacks or for females, she ran for the
people of America. To be a social game changer implies that an individual must be an impact towards
change and inspire others to change. Shirley Chisholm was an excellent congress person she had a
special insight with words and established herself as an outspoken person was determined for change
early in her 1st term. Her presidential crusade was unexpected historical, and she spoke out her mind
on the equality for the people.

Shirley had her way with words by speeches and speaking out her mind, she wasn t shy to back off,
she spoke for the people because she knew no one else would do it. In the speech Equality Rights For
Women, it says ... There is a calculated system of prejudice that lies unspoken behind that question,
why is it acceptable for women to be secretaries, librarians, and teachers, but totally unacceptable for
them to be managers, administrators, doctors, lawyers, and members of Congress... It has been
observed before, that society for a long time discriminated against another minority, the blacks on the
same basis that they were different and inferior, the happy little homemaker and the contented old
darkey on the plantation were both produced by prejudice... . Shirley Chisholm This means that she
felt `uncomfortable that many people don t accept females and black to do a certain job. In addition,
this also proves that she is forthright when it comes to her speeches. Another example comes from
Listen to a speech from Howard University by Shirley While nothing is easy for the black man in

Reflection Paper On Reading Skills
From working with Joe for the past few weeks, I noticed there were a few different reading skills that
he could use some practice with. One of the first things I noticed while working with Joe was his
fluency while reading. During the running records I had done with Joe, I was able to listen to his
reading pace, and noticed that he only took pauses when he needed to take a breath. I also noticed that
he used no expression while reading; not even when there was quotation marks present. Another
reading skill that Joe lacked was good use of a decoding strategy. When Joe was presented with a
word he didn t know, he would use picture cues, but when that didn t work, or when illustrations were
minimal, Joe would simply skip over the word. When I asked Joe what he liked to do when he came
across a word he didn t know he said, I don t know . I got a similar answer when I asked him if he
knew what his teacher, and friends did when they came across a word they didn t know. This
observation showed me that Joe could really benefit from having a decoding strategy presented to him
in a minilesson. On the first day of co teaching; my partner and I focused on teaching a decoding
strategy, so we could practice that strategy if needed while doing a fluency exercise the next time we
met. Taberski mentions how working with words, and decoding strategy will help students move from
hesitancy to fluency (pg 87). Both Alexa and I thought that our learning partners could benefit from

The Pros And Cons Of Feminism
Feminism kicked off in 1848 in Seneca Falls when the first Women s Conference was held. This
conference brought about a movement that would only grow larger with each coming decade.
Feminism is defined as the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes. Now the
question of if I would consider myself a feminist, I would have to answer no. I would describe myself
as a free thinking independent woman and do not want to be labeled under the word feminist. I don t
want to be classified under feminism because I don t fit or agree with some of today s negative
opinions that feminism portrays. One opinion is that feminists are man haters. I am not a man hater.
Upon coming to Sonoma State I can say I have began to develop my own understandings on how I
view the world, myself, and feminism. I can say that each day I grow in some way from what I see
and understand from this world. Do I believe there are inequalities between men and women?
Absolutely. Do I believe women should receive equal pay as men? Again, absolutely. Do I believe
women should have the same educational opportunities as men. Yes. I also see that some ideas maybe
should not be equal. An article in the Elite Daily , written by April Lee, she states her thoughts that
there are dangers of comparing men and women and trying to create same the playing field for both.
We might not realize it, but when we make these comparisons, we are openly admitting that our

Anti-Drugs Policies in the 1960s Essay
Drugs have been influencing the ideas, culture, and music of America for ages. Illicit narcotics have
left the Union in a state of immense debt. Anti drug policies have been dumping billions upon billions
of dollars in prevention, punishment, and rehabilitation. From the roaring twenties, to the prohibition,
drugs have always been fought (Bailey). Most times, the drugs start off as medicines and end up being
harmful (Morris). Perhaps, the most prominent and influential eras of drug use in America are the two
decades of the 60 s and twenty years later, the 80 s. It may very well be that these two decades molded
America into what it is now. The sixties had a huge pull from conservative America of the post war
era. Vietnam veterans were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One score years later, LSD was being used recreationally by the new counterculture, or hippies. Many
people turned to this mind altering drug as way to experience nature, and the company of others. Why
would they use so many drugs? The counterculture was set on doing the opposite of what was seen as
the right way of doing things. They protested many of Nixon s policies and their use of drugs was one
form of protest, along with their music and free love. They wanted to create friction between the
government and the people. The movement was so strong that it pushed on into the early 70 s.
Television sitcoms, like That 70 s Show, point out the strong impact of drug use left by the sixties with
the main characters constantly joining in circles and smoking Marijuana. LSD has impacted the music
and culture of America the most. The Beatles are a rock band that came from England. Their music
became a hit in the United States during the sixties and early seventies, in what became known as the
British Invasion. Some of their songs, like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds are hidden ways of saying
LSD (Nagle). People would gather together in large music festivals, to partake in the enjoyment of
listening to some their favorite bands and among other things to smoke marijuana and take acid.
Woodstock was a 3 day music festival taking place in the town of Bethel, New York. It was the biggest
congregation of the counterculture at the time. Some 400,000 people went to listen to

Mendeleev s The Periodic Table Of The Elements
Dmitri Mendeleev, who developed the periodic table of the elements, was one of sciences most
influential leaders. Before Mendeleev, religion and beliefs shaped people s choices rather than science
and facts. Mendeleev s fame and dedication changed that. Throughout his life, Mendeleev was a
leader in science and the legacy he left behind led others to discover new elements and facilitate
chemistry for generations to come. Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born on February 8th, 1834 in
Tobolsk, Russia. Mendeleev was the seventeenth child out of seventeen born to Ivan Mendeleev and
Maria Kornilyeva. Three of the children died at birth. All fourteen of the children who lived received
Christian names. Mendeleev s father, Ivan Pavlovich Mendeleev, became blind the same year
Mendeleev was born, which left the family in a difficult position. While Mendeleev s family was
affluent and successful, they did not have excess wealth. After his father became blind and unable to
work, Mendeleev s mother took a job governing her brother s glass factory in hope that the money
would assist in raising her children. The outcome was dismal and eventually the glass factory burnt
down. At age seven, a year earlier than was normally allowed, Mendeleev started his education at the
gymnasium his father had taught at. Throughout his primary education, Mendeleev was average in all
classes except chemistry, where he earned much higher marks. He graduated a year early from the
gymnasium at age fifteen.

Guatemala And United States Government Systems Essay
Guatemala and United States Government Systems Government is the authority that addresses, control
and administers the institutions of a community. Every country has ruled by a governance structure.
There are different kinds of government. This comparison is about the United States and Guatemala s
forms of government.
United States system has its foundation on an agreement between the people and the government to
ensure that individual liberties continue to prosper under a free society. The Declaration of
Independence lists three important rights that the Founding Fathers considered natural and
unalienable. They are the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Government exists to protect
these rights. On other hand, the purpose of Guatemala s government, according to the Guatemala s
Constitution, is to promote the common welfare, the consolidation of the regime of legality, security,
equality, justice, liberty and peace. Both countries have its foundation on democracy; nevertheless,
there are specific characteristics that mark a difference between them.
First, United States Constitution establishes a system of government named representative democracy
. In a representative democracy or indirect democracy, the power to govern comes from the people,
who have the highest power. The government works for the people and protects their rights; this is
Popular Sovereignty . The people elect representatives to make laws. Laws made in the United States

Explaining Tennis Jargon And Terminologies
Explaining Tennis Jargon and Terminologies
Like all other sports, tennis has its own set of terminologies and jargon. For every newbie,
memorizing them can be tedious, but to be a master of the game, you need not only to know their
meanings, but also understand them. Knowing these terms will certainly help you learn the game well
and at the same time, make your coach s life easier, given that he wouldn t have to explain every term
he mentions. Remember, every minute in your tennis holiday or coaching session is precious, and they
are better spent learning how to play instead of learning what ace or love means.
In this entry, we will learn and define the different meanings of various tennis jargon and terms. Note
that we will only be looking at the most crucial definitions, AKA, the ones ... Show more content on

Child Labor In India
Child labor in India is causing human rights of children to be violated. Child labor is the illegal use of
children in a business or organization. Child labor is inhumane and is a human rights violation because
it takes away the childhood experience and forces them to do work that is harmful to their bodies and
to their minds. In India, there are approximately 1.3 billion people and other problems in the country
are making it hard for the government to find time to make a solution to illegal child labor. The child
labor in India is the result of debt bondage from families, kidnappings, lack of education, and lack of
government intervention. Debt bondage is a major contributing factor to illegal child labor in India.
Debt bondage is when a family borrows a sum of money or takes a loan and sends someone to work
with them to pay off the debt and interest. This system sounds good in theory, but has never really
worked out because debt bondage occurs when a person needing money pledges his/her labor, or that
of someone under his/her control as an exchange for the loan ( International Child Labor Study ). In
some situations the interest on the loan is so high that it cannot be paid; in others, the laborer is
deemed to repay the interest on the loan but not the actual money borrowed ( International Child
Labor Study ). The loan being inherited and it ends up becoming a debt among many generations.
Children are being dragged into this process and are being forced to go do

We created a scatter plot of the minimum sample size at a range of anticipated effect sizes given the
probability level of 0.05, the five predictor variables in our conceptual model, and the generally
accepted statistical power threshold of 0.8 (Cohen, 1988). Based on the availability of stock price data
for measuring the dependent variable, we focused on Fortune 1000 MNEs since 1990, which
narrowed down the possible incidents from 141,967 in the GTD to 158 terrorist incidents, representing
37 different MNEs. Variables Table 5 identifies and operationalizes the independent, moderating,
control, and dependent variables used in the conceptual model of terrorism and international business.
First, Firm Performance Resilience is the dependent variable. Consistent with the Gittell et al. (2006)
study of the airline industry after 9/11, we measure resilience as the number of days it takes for a firm
s stock price to rebound to the price on the trading day prior to the terrorist attack. The idea here is that
the shock of a terrorist attack would drive the stock price down, but that more resilient firms would
bounce back faster because the more resilient firms have pre established, effective processes and plans
to cope with the impacts of such an attack. We source the stock prices for firms traded on U.S. stock
exchanges from the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) Daily

Compare And Contrast The French Revolution And Christian...
It has been proven by historians that the French revolution is so similar in many ways to the 25th of
January revolution. Obviously, History repeats itself; as we have similar events in which took places
in different parts of the world at different eras. As both the French revolution of 1789 1799 and the
Egyptian revolution of 2011; were in different places and different times, but still they have numerous
similarities regarding their motivations, rulers, reasons, demands and methods. First, both were
inspired by other countries revolutions success in reaching their demands by revolting, for the French

During the Attack on the Tuileries palace, the march was bigger than expected so the crowd defeated
the Swiss Guard. Same as during the Day of Anger when the government attempted to suppress the
crowd and failed as the people eventually forced them to retreat, succeeded in marching and an
excessive number of demonstrations occurred. During the March on Versailles and the Day of Anger,
women took part actively within the revolution as they marched too and risked their lives as well as
men. Similar to the storming of Bastille when the people entered the prison and freed the prisoners
taken there, in Egypt, protestors attacked prisons/police stations such as Torrah prison and the police
station in Khargah, took control and freed the prisoners taken there; and as well as the French
protestors robbed the city armory for weapons as they marched to the Palace of Versailles, the
Egyptian stole weapons from the police stations. In France, they formed the National Assembly at that
time to rule the country in a suitable way in order to control the situation, and Egypt likewise turned
everything to the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed forces by the leadership of the country in
order to control the situation. Sadly, a lot of people were injured and other died throughout both
revolutions in order to bring renaissances and improvements to their countries. Finally,

Social Movements And Its Effects Of Social Change
Social change is the significant alteration over time of behavior patterns and culture. Basically its and
change to a social process. Many sociologist are concerned with the effects of change but, you need to
look at both sides of the argument all the time. Situations like these happen all the time globally. No
society goes unchanged. Some societies may change at a slow rate but it happens and nobody notices
until we go back and look at history. The change that occurs is natural so there is no reason for
anybody to worry.
Social change has a lot to do with social movements. Social movements are groups of people trying to
change something in an established group or society. A huge social movement that happened in the
past and is still happening is women s rights. The opportunities that men get are being offered to
women, as they should be. Another movement is getting the medicine and foods needed in 3rd world
countries. Before there were no programs or people getting involved that gave us the opportunity to
help the less fortunate.

Advantages Of Gravel And Stone Mulch
Gravel and stone mulches can be very effective, especially in gardens where organic mulches would

install the mulch in your garden. Here are a few tips on working with gravel or stone garden mulch.

Disease resistance of newer varieties is also often better than that found in their older counterparts.
There are good standard varieties that can not be ignored, however. A comparison of a favorite variety
with a new introduction is a worthwhile gardening experience. There is no test quite as meaningful as
a comparison in your own garden. As you plant a garden this season, most likely you have a supply of
seeds left from last year or even previous years. Whether to plant these seeds depends on both the type
of seeds and the way they have been stored. Seeds stored properly from last year may germinate well
in the garden this year. Most garden seeds may be kept for one to two years and still germinate well.
The ability to germinate drops off faster in some others. Among those with the shortest life are sweet
corn, okra, onion, parsley, parsnip and salsify. Although these seeds may germinate reasonably well
after one year, the germination rate and vigor is seldom adequate after two years. Among seeds with a
slightly longer life and good germination up to three years are bean, carrot, English pea and southern
pea. Most other vegetable seeds will germinate well up to their fourth or fifth year when kept in cool,
dry storage conditions. In a germination test, we may find that when testing a group of old seeds, a
large number of seed will germinate. Still, when seeds from this same group are planted into the
garden, germination is poor. As seeds age, they may still be viable, but lose vigor. When exposed to
the less favorable germination conditions outdoors, the weaker seedlings may not survive long enough
to emerge from the soil. When using old seeds, plant more thickly than recommended. This not only
helps to get rid of the old seed faster, but improves the chances for having an adequate stand of plants.
It is better to thin plants when germination is good rather than attempting

The Civil Rights And Liberties Essay
With all that has been examined, it is somewhat troubling to see that 21st century America today is
very similar to America from the 1960 s. While it is true that Black Americans have gained civil rights
and liberties, it is the current state of American society itself as well as white fright that dismisses
these rights. The most infamous example of this is, of course, police shootings. Since the Trayvon
Martin case, the United States seems to have exploded with more police shootings in which white
police officers shoot unarmed black men. According to Mapping Police Violence, Police killed at least
102 unarmed black people in 2015, nearly twice each week (Police Violence). Indeed, America is now
like the 1950 s because while Black Americans are now free to vote, walk in public, and partake in
public programs of U.S. society, certain institutions still attempt to suppress their rights. This
attempting at suppression of Black civil rights, moreover, can be attributed to white fright. The violent
reaction to more Black Americans in the public sector schools, entertainment, politics, etc. can be said
to be a consequence of white fright. Generally speaking, white fright, may be defined as the fear of
white, working middle classmen whose liberties would be replaced by the liberties of some other. This
other, may be Black Americans, Asian Americans, immigrants, and anyone else who does not fulfill
the historical, ideological definition of white man since the Civil War

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Communication System
Bureaucracy, Standard Operating Procedures and Standard Working Practices necessary to ensure
consistency can stifle staff engagement and affect performance, limits formal procedures and
processes. Furthermore, standard letters issued to stakeholders, which offer no facility for amendment
or personalisation, can disassociate and weaken customer relationships.
Network channels of communication, their benefits and implications are not considered. Teams are
created purely by location, in order to meet the organisations future vision for 2020. However,
different tasks benefit from different communication networks. For example some roles within TSL
require isolation or home working and would be categorised as a wheel network whilst others are
based upon a processing system following a Y network structure, see figure 1.5 above. No
consideration has been made to the management of virtual teams where effective communication
needs to be encouraged and managed. This is vitally important, especially if the group has not been
through the five key stages of group development described in the model by Bruce W. Tuckman,
which follows a group from formation and conflict in establishing boundaries, to performing and
finally adjournment when the group disbands.
The key strength of the organisations communication system is YETI and OneFile: TSL s programme

they have such a good relationship. Dr. D can seem to understand exactly what Perry is saying even

examples of this are when Perry helps comfort Doof when his feelings are hurt, and when Doof feels
sad because he hurt perry s feeling. Doof and Perry make a good team because they are able to work

Don Quixote Satire
Throughout the satire Don Quixote, Cervantes selectively uses humor to emphasize a point in which
he openly disagrees with. Cervantes takes advantage of this humor when he specifically retells the
Marcela and Eugenio s tragic story. In Marcela s story, Marcela becomes a shepherdess in order to
avoid marriage. However her decision leads to one of her suitors killing himself leading to public out
roar. On the other hand, Eugenio retells a story involving his love Leandra. Leandra accidently falls in
love with a soldier who happens to live in her village, however he robs and entombs Leandra in a
cave. Yet, Eugenio feels betrayed by Leandra that he decides to live as a shepherd. When telling the
story, Cervantes limits his humor to certain characters and actions, signaling to the reader when he
agrees or disagrees with a concept. Cervantes uses the contradicting stories to comment on the
detrimental class system plaguing seventeenth century Spain. The contradictory factors involved in
Marcela and Eugenio s story, such as suitors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Importantly the article explains that Marcela s story comments on the expectancy of society. Jehenson
states that, My interpretive purpose is to show that Cervantes unconventional handling of both the
pastoral genre, and of Marcela within this pastoral episode, are fraught with purposeful ambiguity
(Jehenson 17). Throughout Don Quixote, Cervantes does not handle Marcela similarly to the other
women of the novel. The only time the reader encounters Marcela is during the funeral for a quick
moment before she mysteriously disappears into the forest. Most of the information about Marcela are
rumors spread by the other shepherds; therefore her appearance serves to contradict the rumors spread
by the suitors. Yet Marcela still continues to be a mysterious figure in the

The Pros And Cons Of Immigrants In America
Among the divisive and emotionally charged political debates raging in America today, one of the
most essential and questions everyone is trying to answer is often the one left unspoken: What does it
mean to be an American? As this debate continues today, immigrants have taken center stage in this
argument as both sides try to pinpoint what immigrants place in American society is today and some
would say not at all. Immigrants, however, are an integral and important part of the United States
today and to undervalue and ridicule everything that immigrants contribute to our country is a grave
mistake. Immigrants often represent what is best about the United States: ambition, enterprise, and the
determination to thrive in the face of adversity. Immigration reform has been a hot button issue in
Washington for many years. The United States has needed reform on its immigration policies for
decades, but no one can seem to agree on a solution. During George W. Bush s term in office, he
promoted a surprisingly liberal law that would have given immigrants who had come to the country
illegally the opportunity to apply for citizenship without being deported ( Immigration and Executive
Action... ). This legislation never passed due to strong resistance from Republicans and immigration
reform was again ignored. No further laws to improve American immigration systems were passed
during Bush s presidency ( Immigration and Executive Action... ). With Obama succeeding Bush and

The Impact Of Dutch Imperialism In Indonesia
The Dutch trade of commodities influenced Indonesia s economy in the way that they introduced land
tax, made trade routes, and printed money. The Dutch first implemented land tax by telling farmers to
give them one fifth of what they harvested ( Colonial Period of Indonesia. ) This system was called the
cultivation system. After the farmers gave one fifth of their harvest they got a fixed amount of money
that has no relation to the value of the crops. The Dutch and Javanese officials received bonus when
their residency delivered more crops... ( Colonial Period of Indonesia.) This made encouraged them to
increase production so that they could get more money. This led to corruption ( 1820 1950 Indonesia

The Dutch provided clean water, modern medicine, and education ( Dutch Imperialism in Indonesia ).
This education, however, was only for males, and females couldn t access education. The cultivation
system that was previously mentioned in the previous paragraph meant that if the villagers increased
production, then they would get more money. This led to the Javanese villagers trying to increase
production by reproducing so that there would be more people in the family (Muhlberger). This led to
overpopulation in Java. Before the Dutch didn t use the cultivation system, but instead they forced the
villagers to farm for them or else they would punish them. The Dutch may have influenced Indonesia
positively, but from what the author thinks he thinks that the Dutch influenced Indonesia negatively.
The Dutch bringing their technologies for water, medicine and education was positive socially, but the
cultivation system, and forcing the villagers to work for them was not a good thing socially.
Overpopulation made it harder for people to share resources equally since there is over 1000 people
every square kilometer (Java). There is a considerable social distance between the rich and the poor in
Java. This is evident in Jakarta, as there could be a high class housing, then a few kilometers away
there are slums.

How Does Kromer Influence In Demian
The Foundation Of Childhood Life can be described as a skyscraper. When childhood morality builds
a strong foundation, one can reach great heights. However, when built with a weak, unstable
foundation, life s obstacles undermine the building, causing it to crumble to the ground. In the novel,
Demian, Hermann Hesse pursues the idea of how external influence from Emil Sinclair s peers, during
his childhood lead to his heretic belief in Abraxas. Through encounters with Kromer and Demian,
Sinclair s ethical spectrum shifts to the darker side of life, which he never confronts before, due to his
parents upbringing. Sinclair s abusive relationship with Kromer catalyzes his metamorphosis from
virtuous to villainous. Weak and vulnerable, he let[s] the devil take the hindmost (16). The devil

Do Not Use Open Office To Produce RTF Files!
An exception to the rule that any word processor or text editor can produce RTF files is the Open
Office word processor, which can read RTF files and in theory also create them. However, in practice
Open Office creates RTF files that are often horribly garbled when one next opens the file (either you,
if you edit the file again; or the recipient to whom you have sent your RTF file), regardless of what
word processor or text editor is used to do so.
Therefore studentsshold NOT use Open Office when creating RTF files for any UTA classwork. One
option is to use the Microsoft Office software on all university computers, or (for Windows users) to
copy/paste your file into WordPad, which can save files in RTF format. Another is to use instead of
Open Office the free (open source) Libreoffice Suite (an improved version of Open Office created by
a group of Open Office s original development team, on which RTF works considerably better) or the
AbiWord word processor, an excellent product that also produces proper RTF

Ethnic Conflict In The Bosnian Genocide
Bosnia is a complicated country: three religions, three nations and those others . Nationalism is strong
in all three nations; in two of them there are a lot of racism, chauvinism, separatism; and now we are
supposed to make a state out of that ( Alija Izetbegovic Quote ). This quote clearly reflects the

Themes Of Conflicts In The Maltese Falcon
Dashiell Hammett who worked for a detective agency, wrote the novel The Maltese Falcon in 1929. In
this novel the protagonist is a fictional character that Hammett created and named Sam Spade. Sam is
a private detective hired by another character in the novel named Brigid O Shaughnessy. Being a
detective comes with many job responsibilities and being a private detective becomes even more
complicated. In Hammett s novel there are many conflicts throughout his writing. Most conflicts have
to do with Spade in some form considering he is the detective and also the protagonist. Are the
conflicts in the story relating to Spade within himself; man versus self, or caused by another character;
man versus man? When it comes to conflicts in literature there are two main types; internal and

Group Minds, By Doris Lessing
We, as humans, like to believe that we always stand out in a crowd and never conform to please
society. We hold our freedom to be individuals higher than most of our other freedoms. Humans
believe that we always use this individualism to speak our opinions. We think that we would never
change our views to comply with a group. As much as we would like to believe this, it seems that
more often than not, we tend to follow the crowd. In her article Group Minds , Doris Lessing was on
the right track when she described how humans stand for choice and individualism, but when faced
with the situation, most tend to fall in line with the majority.

As humans, we are drawn to groups for numerous reasons. Society as a whole is very social. When

we are drawn together is we want to fit in. We desire to be accepted by others and fear judgement if
we don t agree with everyone else. This then causes us to conform to the rest of society and act in a

Importance Of School Day In American School
Length of day in American Schools
The American Educational system, which many of us students have become familiar with, did not
come about instantaneously. What we have now is the result of many decades of development and
policy making in legislation. Though Parochial schools were used in the U.S. as early as 1750, and
Government funded public schools began cropping up after the Revolutionary war, our educational
system s pace of development was relatively slow up until around the mid 19th century when the first
states began passing laws that made schooling compulsory to all those who had the opportunity to
attend. By the early 1900s, twelve years of education became the standard across the nation, a
standard that has withstood the test of time and is still in place today. The average school day in the
U.S. is 6.5 hours, and students are expected to attend 180 total days of school per grade term. To
supplement this, on average the U.S. spends more per capita on education than any other country in
the world. Though we spend much, the results don t directly translate to nation wide success in
schools. In 2014, the U.S. was ranked 14th globally in education. Many attribute this to the average
length of the school day in America, and others propose an overall increase in total instructional hours
within American schools.
As stated earlier, the average school day in America is 6.5 hours long, beginning at around 7:30am and
ending between 2 to 3pm. Within this time, students are

Frankenstein Vs. Bladerunner Essay
As society changes around us, we spot things we never noticed before: high divorce rates, murder
rates, and drug use just to name a few. James Riddley Scott and Mary Shelley noticed and had a fear
of child abandonment. In Frankenstein, Shelley explores this subject through the viewpoint of a man,
Victor, who creates a child so hideous that he cannot bear to look at it, and consequently deserts it. In
Blade Runner, Scott explores this matter through a businessman, Tyrell, who makes replicants of
humans, the Nexus 6, gives them only four years to live, and sells them as slaves. The children of
these creators turn out to be smarter and more human than expected, and revolt against the way

shape came nearer that it was the wretch whom I had created (98). During these confrontations both
creations ask their creators to correct the flaw that has driven them to cause so much death and
despair: Do your duty towards me, and I will do mine towards you and the rest of mankind. If you will
comply with my conditions, I will leave them and you at peace; but if you refuse, I will glut the maw

Non-Christian World View Definition
In today s society, young people are constantly being exposed to worldly influences through children s
media, including television, websites, video games, and movies. Topics such as gay marriage,
evolution, and abortion are presented to kids as facts or the cultural norm. Children are naïve and
young, and their hearts should be guarded from these secular ideas. The Biblical view of the family is
slowly being diminished, evolution is being taught as scientific fact, and many children s media
celebrities are openly showing support for their non Christian beliefs. Secularist, atheist, and
humanistic values are subtly, and sometimes even blatantly, making their way more and more into

homosexuality and unmarried couples living together, the Bible clearly describes how both of these

is asserted that marriage is something that should be honored, and God will judge the sexually

Naturalistic Observation Of Student s A Coffee Line
Naturalistic Observation of Student s in a Coffee Line In the United States, 85% of adults own a cell
phone, with 18 to 24 year olds texting the most (Zickuhr, 2011). Of these adults, 67% reported that
they check their phone even if they do not hear it ringing, 44% sleep with the phone beside their bed,
and 29% reported they could not live without their cell phone (Smith, 2012). In addition, according to
the Baylor University report, studies show that young adults check their phone an average of 60 times
a day. This study examined cell phone use among university students that were alone and in a group.
Specifically, we were interested in observing whether students alone in a coffee line or students in a
group in a coffee line, spent more or less time on their cell phone. We were also interested to observe
if gender affected cell phone usage and whether males or females were more likely to be in a group.
The purpose of this study was to determine if university students that are alone spend more or less
time on their phone than students that are in a group. We also examined if gender was an important
factor on whether a student was in a group or alone. Using naturalistic observation, we calculated the

Inspecting Incoming Containerized Shipping Crates Essays
There are many arguing points as to the validity of inspecting 100% of all incoming containerized
shipping crates. According to Jim Kouri, Over 12 million containers enter our country each year, and
less than six percent are heavily inspected (Kouri). Sooner or later our enemies will attempt to utilize
this weakness in our national defense system to attack American citizens and our way of life.
Protecting our homeland, protecting our resources and preserving our national defense infrastructure is
something that can no longer be overlooked or delayed until tomorrow. Whether during peace or in
times of war, our homeland security is something that must be taken very seriously. Our enemies will

Therefore, once a container is loaded onto a vessel, even if it is identified for additional screening, the

of doing business. The first smuggling incident involving a C TPAT carrier occurred in 2005. In three
separate incidents the Nippon Yusen Kaisha

The Indiana University Health Bloomington Car Seat Program
Overview of Program
Program Description
The Indiana University Health Bloomington Car Seat Program provides free car seat inspections and
installations to families in Monroe County, Greene County, and Owen County. This program is a result
of a funding partnership between IU Health Bloomington and Automotive Safety Program. The car
seat technician does around 300 inspections and installations a year. The program sessions take place
from 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. on Fridays at the Assisted Medical Transport Department garage, which is
located at 630 South Patterson Dr. Bloomington, IN 47403. The inspection is completed in the
participant s vehicle. Most participants find out about the IU Health Bloomington Car Seat Program
by referral from their pediatrician, family, friends or a community organization. While the program
ideally targets low income families who fall under the Women, Infants and Children guidelines,
families from all socioeconomic statuses are welcomed.
The two primary stakeholders are the Automotive Safety Program and the Crisis Pregnancy Center.
The Automotive Safety Program is an Indiana organization that was found in 1981, with its goal being
child passenger safety (Automotive Safety Program, 2014). The program provides funding for the
purchase of car seats for the program. As a condition of the program, it also offers car seats to parents
and caregivers who do not have car seats, due to low income or car seat expiration. The Crisis
Pregnancy Center is the

  • 2. Sonnet 18 By William Shakespeare SONNET 18 BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE William Shakespeare wrote Sonnet 18 as part of a sequence of 154 sonnets. Also known as Shall I Compare Thee? Sonnet 18 has become one of his most well loved poems. Shakespeare includes symbols of time, decay and eternity within this work. The speaker explicates his unending love for his beloved and how it will live on after death. The first quatrain introduces the personification of summer. The speaker begins the sonnet by asking if he can compare his friend to a warm, summer day. A brief statement stating how lovely and temperate thee is follows this rhetorical question. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, Shakespeare s first example of personification, says that strong winds can hurt the new flower buds and summer s lease hath all too short a date, explains that the season does not last long. The mention of a lease refers to the fact that summer must end. The personification of nature is even more evident in the second quatrain. This time the sun is named the eye of heaven. The speaker also suggests that the sun is sometimes hidden. Additionally, it is said that everything that has beauty will fade. This may be by chance or by inevitable time. Shakespeare uses the word untrimm d to refer to these fair things as losing their decorations, or trimmings. However, the speaker has changed the overall tone at the beginning of the third quatrain. Moving away from the beautiful description of summer, the speaker explains ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shirley Chisholm was an African American female congresswoman who ran for the presidency in 1972, as a Democrat. When she ran for presidency she didn t run for the blacks or for females, she ran for the people of America. To be a social game changer implies that an individual must be an impact towards change and inspire others to change. Shirley Chisholm was an excellent congress person she had a special insight with words and established herself as an outspoken person was determined for change early in her 1st term. Her presidential crusade was unexpected historical, and she spoke out her mind on the equality for the people. On November 30, 1924, Shirley Anita ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shirley had her way with words by speeches and speaking out her mind, she wasn t shy to back off, she spoke for the people because she knew no one else would do it. In the speech Equality Rights For Women, it says ... There is a calculated system of prejudice that lies unspoken behind that question, why is it acceptable for women to be secretaries, librarians, and teachers, but totally unacceptable for them to be managers, administrators, doctors, lawyers, and members of Congress... It has been observed before, that society for a long time discriminated against another minority, the blacks on the same basis that they were different and inferior, the happy little homemaker and the contented old darkey on the plantation were both produced by prejudice... . Shirley Chisholm This means that she felt `uncomfortable that many people don t accept females and black to do a certain job. • 4. Reflection Paper On Reading Skills From working with Joe for the past few weeks, I noticed there were a few different reading skills that he could use some practice with. One of the first things I noticed while working with Joe was his fluency while reading. During the running records I had done with Joe, I was able to listen to his reading pace, and noticed that he only took pauses when he needed to take a breath. I also noticed that he used no expression while reading; not even when there was quotation marks present. Another reading skill that Joe lacked was good use of a decoding strategy. When Joe was presented with a word he didn t know, he would use picture cues, but when that didn t work, or when illustrations were minimal, Joe would simply skip over the word. When I asked Joe what he liked to do when he came across a word he didn t know he said, I don t know . I got a similar answer when I asked him if he knew what his teacher, and friends did when they came across a word they didn t know. This observation showed me that Joe could really benefit from having a decoding strategy presented to him in a minilesson. On the first day of co teaching; my partner and I focused on teaching a decoding strategy, so we could practice that strategy if needed while doing a fluency exercise the next time we met. Taberski mentions how working with words, and decoding strategy will help students move from hesitancy to fluency (pg 87). • 5. The Pros And Cons Of Feminism Feminism kicked off in 1848 in Seneca Falls when the first Women s Conference was held. This conference brought about a movement that would only grow larger with each coming decade. Feminism is defined as the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes. Now the question of if I would consider myself a feminist, I would have to answer no. I would describe myself as a free thinking independent woman and do not want to be labeled under the word feminist. I don t want to be classified under feminism because I don t fit or agree with some of today s negative opinions that feminism portrays. One opinion is that feminists are man haters. I am not a man hater. Upon coming to Sonoma State I can say I have began to develop my own understandings on how I view the world, myself, and feminism. I can say that each day I grow in some way from what I see and understand from this world. Do I believe there are inequalities between men and women? Absolutely. Do I believe women should receive equal pay as men? Again, absolutely. Do I believe women should have the same educational opportunities as men. Yes. I also see that some ideas maybe should not be equal. Anti drug policies have been dumping billions upon billions of dollars in prevention, punishment, and rehabilitation. From the roaring twenties, to the prohibition, drugs have always been fought (Bailey). Most times, the drugs start off as medicines and end up being harmful (Morris). They protested many of Nixon s policies and their use of drugs was one form of protest, along with their music and free love. They wanted to create friction between the government and the people. Before Mendeleev, religion and beliefs shaped people s choices rather than science and facts. Mendeleev s fame and dedication changed that. Throughout his life, Mendeleev was a leader in science and the legacy he left behind led others to discover new elements and facilitate chemistry for generations to come. Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born on February 8th, 1834 in Tobolsk, Russia. Mendeleev was the seventeenth child out of seventeen born to Ivan Mendeleev and Maria Kornilyeva. Three of the children died at birth. All fourteen of the children who lived received Christian names. Mendeleev s father, Ivan Pavlovich Mendeleev, became blind the same year Mendeleev was born, which left the family in a difficult position. While Mendeleev s family was affluent and successful, they did not have excess wealth. After his father became blind and unable to work, Mendeleev s mother took a job governing her brother s glass factory in hope that the money would assist in raising her children. The outcome was dismal and eventually the glass factory burnt down. At age seven, a year earlier than was normally allowed, Mendeleev started his education at the gymnasium his father had taught at. Throughout his primary education, Mendeleev was average in all classes except chemistry, where he earned much higher marks. He graduated a year early from the gymnasium at age fifteen. ... Every country has ruled by a governance structure. There are different kinds of government. This comparison is about the United States and Guatemala s forms of government. United States system has its foundation on an agreement between the people and the government to ensure that individual liberties continue to prosper under a free society. The Declaration of Independence lists three important rights that the Founding Fathers considered natural and unalienable. They are the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Government exists to protect these rights. On other hand, the purpose of Guatemala s government, according to the Guatemala s Constitution, is to promote the common welfare, the consolidation of the regime of legality, security, equality, justice, liberty and peace. Both countries have its foundation on democracy; nevertheless, there are specific characteristics that mark a difference between them. Child labor is inhumane and is a human rights violation because it takes away the childhood experience and forces them to do work that is harmful to their bodies and to their minds. In India, there are approximately 1.3 billion people and other problems in the country are making it hard for the government to find time to make a solution to illegal child labor. The child labor in India is the result of debt bondage from families, kidnappings, lack of education, and lack of government intervention. Debt bondage is a major contributing factor to illegal child labor in India. Debt bondage is when a family borrows a sum of money or takes a loan and sends someone to work with them to pay off the debt and interest. This system sounds good in theory, but has never really worked out because debt bondage occurs when a person needing money pledges his/her labor, or that of someone under his/her control as an exchange for the loan ( International Child Labor Study ). In some situations the interest on the loan is so high that it cannot be paid; in others, the laborer is deemed to repay the interest on the loan but not the actual money borrowed ( International Child Labor Study ). The idea here is that the shock of a terrorist attack would drive the stock price down, but that more resilient firms would bounce back faster because the more resilient firms have pre established, effective processes and plans to cope with the impacts of such an attack. Disease resistance of newer varieties is also often better than that found in their older counterparts. There are good standard varieties that can not be ignored, however. A comparison of a favorite variety with a new introduction is a worthwhile gardening experience. There is no test quite as meaningful as a comparison in your own garden. As you plant a garden this season, most likely you have a supply of seeds left from last year or even previous years. Whether to plant these seeds depends on both the type of seeds and the way they have been stored. Seeds stored properly from last year may germinate well in the garden this year. Most garden seeds may be kept for one to two years and still germinate well. The ability to germinate drops off faster in some others. Among those with the shortest life are sweet corn, okra, onion, parsley, parsnip and salsify. Although these seeds may germinate reasonably well after one year, the germination rate and vigor is seldom adequate after two years. Among seeds with a slightly longer life and good germination up to three years are bean, carrot, English pea and southern pea. Most other vegetable seeds will germinate well up to their fourth or fifth year when kept in cool, dry storage conditions. In a germination test, we may find that when testing a group of old seeds, a large number of seed will germinate. Still, when seeds from this same group are planted into the garden, germination is poor. As seeds age, they may still be viable, but lose vigor. When exposed to the less favorable germination conditions outdoors, the weaker seedlings may not survive long enough to emerge from the soil. When using old seeds, plant more thickly than recommended. This not only helps to get rid of the old seed faster, but improves the chances for having an adequate stand of plants. • 18. The Civil Rights And Liberties Essay With all that has been examined, it is somewhat troubling to see that 21st century America today is very similar to America from the 1960 s. While it is true that Black Americans have gained civil rights and liberties, it is the current state of American society itself as well as white fright that dismisses these rights. The most infamous example of this is, of course, police shootings. Since the Trayvon Martin case, the United States seems to have exploded with more police shootings in which white police officers shoot unarmed black men. According to Mapping Police Violence, Police killed at least 102 unarmed black people in 2015, nearly twice each week (Police Violence). Indeed, America is now like the 1950 s because while Black Americans are now free to vote, walk in public, and partake in public programs of U.S. society, certain institutions still attempt to suppress their rights. This attempting at suppression of Black civil rights, moreover, can be attributed to white fright. The violent reaction to more Black Americans in the public sector schools, entertainment, politics, etc. can be said to be a consequence of white fright. Generally speaking, white fright, may be defined as the fear of white, working middle classmen whose liberties would be replaced by the liberties of some other. Cervantes takes advantage of this humor when he specifically retells the Marcela and Eugenio s tragic story. In Marcela s story, Marcela becomes a shepherdess in order to avoid marriage. However her decision leads to one of her suitors killing himself leading to public out roar. On the other hand, Eugenio retells a story involving his love Leandra. Leandra accidently falls in love with a soldier who happens to live in her village, however he robs and entombs Leandra in a cave. Yet, Eugenio feels betrayed by Leandra that he decides to live as a shepherd. • 27. The Pros And Cons Of Immigrants In America Among the divisive and emotionally charged political debates raging in America today, one of the most essential and questions everyone is trying to answer is often the one left unspoken: What does it mean to be an American? As this debate continues today, immigrants have taken center stage in this argument as both sides try to pinpoint what immigrants place in American society is today and some would say not at all. Immigrants, however, are an integral and important part of the United States today and to undervalue and ridicule everything that immigrants contribute to our country is a grave mistake. Immigrants often represent what is best about the United States: ambition, enterprise, and the determination to thrive in the face of adversity. Immigration reform has been a hot button issue in Washington for many years. The United States has needed reform on its immigration policies for decades, but no one can seem to agree on a solution. During George W. Bush s term in office, he promoted a surprisingly liberal law that would have given immigrants who had come to the country illegally the opportunity to apply for citizenship without being deported ( Immigration and Executive Action... ). This legislation never passed due to strong resistance from Republicans and immigration reform was again ignored. No further laws to improve American immigration systems were passed during Bush s presidency ( Immigration and Executive Action... ). With Obama succeeding Bush and assuming ... After the farmers gave one fifth of their harvest they got a fixed amount of money that has no relation to the value of the crops. This education, however, was only for males, and females couldn t access education. The cultivation system that was previously mentioned in the previous paragraph meant that if the villagers increased production, then they would get more money. This led to the Javanese villagers trying to increase production by reproducing so that there would be more people in the family (Muhlberger). This led to overpopulation in Java. Before the Dutch didn t use the cultivation system, but instead they forced the villagers to farm for them or else they would punish them. The Dutch may have influenced Indonesia positively, but from what the author thinks he thinks that the Dutch influenced Indonesia negatively. The Dutch bringing their technologies for water, medicine and education was positive socially, but the cultivation system, and forcing the villagers to work for them was not a good thing socially. Overpopulation made it harder for people to share resources equally since there is over 1000 people every square kilometer (Java). There is a considerable social distance between the rich and the poor in Java. This is evident in Jakarta, as there could be a high class housing, then a few kilometers away there are slums. ... However, when built with a weak, unstable foundation, life s obstacles undermine the building, causing it to crumble to the ground. In the novel, Demian, Hermann Hesse pursues the idea of how external influence from Emil Sinclair s peers, during his childhood lead to his heretic belief in Abraxas. Importance Of School Day In American School Length of day in American Schools The American Educational system, which many of us students have become familiar with, did not come about instantaneously. What we have now is the result of many decades of development and policy making in legislation. Though Parochial schools were used in the U.S. as early as 1750, and Government funded public schools began cropping up after the Revolutionary war, our educational system s pace of development was relatively slow up until around the mid 19th century when the first states began passing laws that made schooling compulsory to all those who had the opportunity to attend. By the early 1900s, twelve years of education became the standard across the nation, a standard that has withstood the test of time and is still in place today. The average school day in the U.S. is 6.5 hours, and students are expected to attend 180 total days of school per grade term. To supplement this, on average the U.S. spends more per capita on education than any other country in the world. Though we spend much, the results don t directly translate to nation wide success in schools. In 2014, the U.S. was ranked 14th globally in education. Many attribute this to the average length of the school day in America, and others propose an overall increase in total instructional hours within American schools.
