Definition
• Rope access is the professional use of ropes to do
inspections, Repair, maintenance, and other types of
access work.
• The use of ropes in industrial settings was pioneered by
explorers who first used ropes in caving and climbing and has
since been adapted for many different types of work.
What is rope access?
• Rope access system is a safe method of working at height
where ropes and associated equipment are used to gain access to and
from the work position, and to be supported there.
What does rope access mean?
Industrial climbing:
• Rope access or industrial climbing is a form of work positioning,
initially developed from techniques used in climbing which applies
practical rope work to allow workers to access difficult-to-reach
locations without the use of scaffolding, cradles or an aerial work
platform.
Rope access:
• A means of access by descending or ascending a main line while the worker is
protected by a safety line.
• Rope access also includes the use of climbing and aid climbing techniques with fall
protection.
• Rope access technicians use a variety of
rope-based skills and equipment to access buildings,
other structures.
• A rope is used as the primary means of support and
a safety rope is used to attach the fall arrest system.
• Climbing and aid climbing techniques used by rope
access technicians may use techniques other than a
safety line for fall protection such as positioning
lanyards, backup lanyards and bypass lanyards.
What are the different types of rope access?
• There are two main types of rope used in industrial
rope access, abseiling and climbing:
• low stretch (sometimes called semi-static or
static) and dynamic
What are the three types of ropes?
• Common Types of Rope and Cord Lightweight nylon cord
with an inner core protected by a woven outer sheath.
• Twine is lightweight cord that consists of one-twist plies.
• Made from many different materials including cotton, sisal,
manila and polypropylene.
• A synthetic fiber rope that has little to no stretch.
Is rope access safer than scaffolding?
• Although it may seem as though dangling from a rope
is significantly more dangerous than standing on a
more solid plank of wood, rope access has a better
safety record than scaffolding.
Hazards
• Struck by a falling object.
• Fall of personnel from Height
• Fall of Materials / Dropping Objects
• Anchor failure
• Technician struck on rope
• Adverse Weather: High wind / Rain / Dust storm / Fog
• Slips & trips
• Incompetent Operatives Doing Rope Access Activity
• High Temperature and Humidity
Control Measures
• Rope access work practices shall include the ability for
self-rescue or prompt rescue by other rope access technicians.
• To meet the above requirement, a work team
should consist of at least two members.
• Properly planned anchorages should be used.
• All rope access technicians should be properly supervised and self-supporting.
• Work teams should consist of at least the minimum number of members required
to ensure that should anyone require help they can quickly perform a rescue.
• Each rope access technician shall use a fall arrest system meeting the fall
protection regulations or standards of the jurisdiction or country of the work;
such as ANSI.
Control Measures
• Deployed competent staff.
• Rescue kit & First aid kit must be available onsite.
• IRATA certified operatives should only be appointed for high level rope access work
• Follow procedure on anchoring and rigging, deviation -anchorage to be greater than 15KN.
• All rope access accessories must be certified by EIAC accredited 3rd party company
according to DM Rope Access Guideline (DM-HSDGU35-URAS2).
• Large items (over 8kg) should be suspended on an additional haul rope.
• All rope access equipment to be routinely checked and monitored throughout works.
Damaged/faulty equipment to be removed and replaced or quarantined.
• Conduct toolbox talk to all operatives and must be understood by all then signed before
any work starts.
Control Measures
• Wind speed to be monitored frequently by supervisor, once the wind speed exceeds
(>25kph / 6.9m/s) the safe operating level recommended by manufacturers specification
working at height and in accordance with IRATA ICOP & DM-HSD-GU35- URAS2 working at
height shall stop the work. (IRATA: Industrial Rope Access Trade Association)
• All rope access equipment and tools to be checked before any works start, ensuring all
equipment are in good condition and safe for use. (Third party
inspection certificate provided)
• Ensure all operatives involved in the works are fully briefed on
the work scope, method statement, risk assessment and rescue plan.
• Ensure all operatives understand the safe and suitable access and
egress to work locations.
• supervisor to choose suitable anchor points and oversee
all rigging of ropes before any works start.
What is rope access technician?
• A person who has completed a rope access certification program
and has the appropriate training and experience to perform the
duties required according to the assigned level of responsibility.
There are three levels of rope access technician.
• Has knowledge of rope access equipment.
Technician Levels
Level III Technician (Rope Access Supervisor):
• A person with the training, skills, experience and certification necessary to assume
responsibility for the entire rope access work site, including management and guidance of
other rope access technicians on the work site,
• who is capable of designing, analyzing, evaluating and specifying rope access systems,
• and who has the knowledge and experience to direct rescue operations from rope access
systems, as well as the skills necessary to perform advanced rescue from rope access
systems.
Level II Technician (Rope Access Lead Technician):
• A person with the appropriate training, skills, experience, and certification to perform,
under the direction of a Rope Access Supervisor,
• All rope access rigging, work and, at a minimum, has the skills necessary to perform
standard rescue from rope access systems.
Level I Technician (Rope Access Worker):
• A person with the appropriate training, skills, and certification for performing, under the
direct supervision of a Rope Access Lead Technician or Rope Access Supervisor,
• Standard rope access operations and, at a minimum, has the skills necessary to perform
limited rescue from rope access systems
Precautions to be safe
• Remove debris after work.
• Don’t block any access
• Should be medically fit
• Conduct pre-job briefing
• Follow Safety procedures.

‫آمدید‬ ‫خوش‬ Special Awareness.
Welcome to Holy Month of Ramadan
For Muslims:
The effects of fasting, low blood sugar and dehydration,
can add to lack of sleep and place you at risk of an accident.
Steps we can take to improve and protect our physical
health during Ramadan.
By communicating hazards and letting others be aware of our physical
condition we can work together to stay safe
Awareness for Non-Fasters
 Don’t smoke , eating tobacco at open areas during fasting hours
 Don’t eat or drink in public areas during fasting hours
 Don’t joke or discuss with fasting people it may
change to fighting during empty stomach.
 It's strictly forbidden to drink alcohol in public in Dubai,
especially during Ramadan it may result in a fine or even arrest.
 In Islamic countries, Muslims are given certain privileges like shortened
work hours.
 Eating in public and open display of food and water are also prohibited,
with restaurants required to drape their windows with black curtains.
Awareness for Non-Fasters
 Please be a little flexible.
 If you have a friend or a colleague who
is fasting, please understand if you
see they are low on energy.
 Fasting for a whole day is not easy.
 Even if you eat and hydrate yourself at night and early
morning, the body will soon run out of energy during the
day.
 Never discuss / argument in any matter with fasting people.
 Contact HSE Officer if any discomfort.
General for Both Muslim & Non-Muslims
 Whether one is Muslim or Non-Muslim it is essential that
we learn to respect each other religion’s feelings.
 Regarding any issues obstructing H&S contact to
Terminal HSE Inspector.
 Hope all of you understanding and will follow the safe
procedures

  • 1.
  • 2. Welcome To Agenda: • Introduction • Emergency Procedures • Assembly point • Definition • Hazards • Controls • Role of Rope Access Technician • Quiz
  • 3. Definition • Rope access is the professional use of ropes to do inspections, Repair, maintenance, and other types of access work. • The use of ropes in industrial settings was pioneered by explorers who first used ropes in caving and climbing and has since been adapted for many different types of work.
  • 4. What is rope access? • Rope access system is a safe method of working at height where ropes and associated equipment are used to gain access to and from the work position, and to be supported there.
  • 5. What does rope access mean? Industrial climbing: • Rope access or industrial climbing is a form of work positioning, initially developed from techniques used in climbing which applies practical rope work to allow workers to access difficult-to-reach locations without the use of scaffolding, cradles or an aerial work platform.
  • 6. Rope access: • A means of access by descending or ascending a main line while the worker is protected by a safety line. • Rope access also includes the use of climbing and aid climbing techniques with fall protection. • Rope access technicians use a variety of rope-based skills and equipment to access buildings, other structures. • A rope is used as the primary means of support and a safety rope is used to attach the fall arrest system. • Climbing and aid climbing techniques used by rope access technicians may use techniques other than a safety line for fall protection such as positioning lanyards, backup lanyards and bypass lanyards.
  • 7. What are the different types of rope access? • There are two main types of rope used in industrial rope access, abseiling and climbing: • low stretch (sometimes called semi-static or static) and dynamic
  • 8. What are the three types of ropes? • Common Types of Rope and Cord Lightweight nylon cord with an inner core protected by a woven outer sheath. • Twine is lightweight cord that consists of one-twist plies. • Made from many different materials including cotton, sisal, manila and polypropylene. • A synthetic fiber rope that has little to no stretch.
  • 9. Is rope access safer than scaffolding? • Although it may seem as though dangling from a rope is significantly more dangerous than standing on a more solid plank of wood, rope access has a better safety record than scaffolding.
  • 10. Hazards • Struck by a falling object. • Fall of personnel from Height • Fall of Materials / Dropping Objects • Anchor failure • Technician struck on rope • Adverse Weather: High wind / Rain / Dust storm / Fog • Slips & trips • Incompetent Operatives Doing Rope Access Activity • High Temperature and Humidity
  • 11. Control Measures • Rope access work practices shall include the ability for self-rescue or prompt rescue by other rope access technicians. • To meet the above requirement, a work team should consist of at least two members. • Properly planned anchorages should be used. • All rope access technicians should be properly supervised and self-supporting. • Work teams should consist of at least the minimum number of members required to ensure that should anyone require help they can quickly perform a rescue. • Each rope access technician shall use a fall arrest system meeting the fall protection regulations or standards of the jurisdiction or country of the work; such as ANSI.
  • 12. Control Measures • Deployed competent staff. • Rescue kit & First aid kit must be available onsite. • IRATA certified operatives should only be appointed for high level rope access work • Follow procedure on anchoring and rigging, deviation -anchorage to be greater than 15KN. • All rope access accessories must be certified by EIAC accredited 3rd party company according to DM Rope Access Guideline (DM-HSDGU35-URAS2). • Large items (over 8kg) should be suspended on an additional haul rope. • All rope access equipment to be routinely checked and monitored throughout works. Damaged/faulty equipment to be removed and replaced or quarantined. • Conduct toolbox talk to all operatives and must be understood by all then signed before any work starts.
  • 13. Control Measures • Wind speed to be monitored frequently by supervisor, once the wind speed exceeds (>25kph / 6.9m/s) the safe operating level recommended by manufacturers specification working at height and in accordance with IRATA ICOP & DM-HSD-GU35- URAS2 working at height shall stop the work. (IRATA: Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) • All rope access equipment and tools to be checked before any works start, ensuring all equipment are in good condition and safe for use. (Third party inspection certificate provided) • Ensure all operatives involved in the works are fully briefed on the work scope, method statement, risk assessment and rescue plan. • Ensure all operatives understand the safe and suitable access and egress to work locations. • supervisor to choose suitable anchor points and oversee all rigging of ropes before any works start.
  • 14. What is rope access technician? • A person who has completed a rope access certification program and has the appropriate training and experience to perform the duties required according to the assigned level of responsibility. There are three levels of rope access technician. • Has knowledge of rope access equipment.
  • 15. Technician Levels Level III Technician (Rope Access Supervisor): • A person with the training, skills, experience and certification necessary to assume responsibility for the entire rope access work site, including management and guidance of other rope access technicians on the work site, • who is capable of designing, analyzing, evaluating and specifying rope access systems, • and who has the knowledge and experience to direct rescue operations from rope access systems, as well as the skills necessary to perform advanced rescue from rope access systems. Level II Technician (Rope Access Lead Technician): • A person with the appropriate training, skills, experience, and certification to perform, under the direction of a Rope Access Supervisor, • All rope access rigging, work and, at a minimum, has the skills necessary to perform standard rescue from rope access systems. Level I Technician (Rope Access Worker): • A person with the appropriate training, skills, and certification for performing, under the direct supervision of a Rope Access Lead Technician or Rope Access Supervisor, • Standard rope access operations and, at a minimum, has the skills necessary to perform limited rescue from rope access systems
  • 16. Precautions to be safe • Remove debris after work. • Don’t block any access • Should be medically fit • Conduct pre-job briefing • Follow Safety procedures.
