 That is designed to safely lift a worker
and their equipment on indoor and
outdoor worksites.
 Specialized machines that enable
workers to perform tasks safely
and efficiently at heights.

What are MEWPs used for?
 A MEWP is a mobile machine.
 It is used to move persons to working positions where they
are carrying out work from the work platform, with the
intention that persons are getting on and off the work
platform only at access positions at ground level or on the
chassis.

 Entrapment: operator trapped between
part of the basket and a fixed structure,
e.g. when maneuvering in confined
overhead areas of steel work.
 Overturning: the machine may
overturn throwing the operator
from the basket.

Before each day or at the beginning of each shift,
The aerial and/or Man lift shall be given a visual
inspection including but not limited to the following:
1. Operating and emergency controls
2. Safety devices
3. Personal protective devices
4. Air, hydraulic, and fuel systems leaks
5. Cables and wiring harnesses
6. Loose or missing parts
7. Tires and wheels
8. Warnings, control markings, and operating manuals (must be legible)
9. Guardrail system
10. Other items specified by the manufacturer

 A programmed of daily visual checks,
 Regular inspections and servicing schedules should be
established in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions and the risks associated with each MEWP.

 Reported problems should be put right quickly
and the MEWP taken out of service if the item is
safety critical.

procedures if you are using a MEWP or any other type of powered
access equipment.

Confined overhead working:
•Operators should know the dangers,
•The safe system of work to be followed.
•If there are overhead structures against which an operator
could be trapped and then pushed onto the MEWP controls,
consider selecting a MEWP that has been designed to
prevent such accidental contact.
•Keeping the platform tidy will reduce the risk of the operator
tripping or losing balance while in the basket.

Ground conditions:
•The platform should be used on firm and level ground.
•Any temporary covers should be strong
enough to withstand the applied pressure.
•Localised ground features, eg trenches,
•manholes and uncompacted backfill,
•can all lead to overturning

Guardrails:
Make sure the work platform is fitted
with effective guard rails and toe boards.
Arresting falls:
a harness with a short work restraint lanyard
must be secured to a suitable manufacturer
Provided anchorage point within the basket to
stop the wearer from getting into a position
where they could fall from the carrier.

Falling objects:
Barrier off the area around the
platform so that falling tools or
Objects do not strike people below.
Weather:
•High winds can tilt platforms and make them unstable.
•Set a maximum safe wind speed for operation.
•Storms and snowfalls can also damage platforms.
•Inspect the platform before use after severe weather.

Handling materials:
If used to install materials check the weight and dimensions
of materials and consider any manual handling and load
distribution issues. (M23 kg / F16 kg)
•You may need additional lifting equipment
to transport materials to the work position.
Nearby hazards:
•Do not operate a MEWP close to overhead cables or other
dangerous machinery, or
•Allow any part of the arm to protrude into a traffic route.

21. General Precaution (FOTT)
 All operatives will be over the age of 18 years, trained, certificated,
and authorized to use and will be responsible for maintenance and
reporting of defects.
 These machines are only to be used on firm flat
or well compacted stoned out surfaces.
 Barriers or cones or fencing will be placed around machine
operating area when necessary.
 All operatives will wear a full body harness that must be clipped onto
the cage at all times by a short lanyard to prevent the operative from
climbing the basket.

22. General Precaution (FOTT)
 Materials will not be allowed to accumulate on platform.
 Guards and fencing on moving
parts must always be in place.
 Machine must only be used on suitable surfaces and
operatives must be in possession of necessary information
(manual) etc. to enable safe operation of machine.
 A competent operative must inspect machines weekly and
maintain a record.
 Man lift movement shall be controlled by flagman.

MEWP accidents are mostly caused by three (3)
factors:
