Rheumatic heart disease is a chronic condition that results from rheumatic fever, which causes inflammation of all layers of the heart. It is characterized by scarring and deformity of the heart valves, most commonly affecting the mitral and aortic valves. Rheumatic fever is caused by an untreated streptococcal infection and occurs most often in children aged 5-15 from low socioeconomic backgrounds. It leads to 40-60% of cases developing rheumatic heart disease. Medical management focuses on preventing recurrent streptococcal infections with long-term antibiotic prophylaxis while surgical intervention may be needed for severe valve damage or heart failure.
