The respiratory system is made up of organs that help oxygen enter the body and carbon dioxide leave the bloodstream. Air enters through the nose or mouth and passes through the pharynx and trachea into the lungs. In the lungs, the trachea branches into bronchi which branch further into bronchioles and tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries and it is at this site that oxygen diffuses into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide diffuses out through very thin cellular walls. The diaphragm and rib muscles help draw air in and out of the lungs during breathing.
