The Central Dilemma Of Environmental Ethics
The central dilemma in environmental ethics is determining the value of nature: what kind of value
does it have, what aspects of the environment have value, and from what or whom does environmental
value ultimately derive? Many philosophers have proposed answers to these inquiries, but every ethic
is weak in one or more of these areas. Holmes Rolston III, an American philosopher, preacher, and
naturalist, has proposed a deontological argument that addresses each of the key subjects in the debate
surrounding the valuation of nature (Holmes Rolston III, 2016, para. 1 2, 4). Although several
essential components of his case include numerous references to macroevolution, an aspect with
which Young Earth Christians would disagree, his ethic is logical, well crafted, and on the whole
aligns with a Biblical perspective of Creation. It would not seem at first that a former Presbyterian
pastor would be especially interested in the realm of environmental philosophy, yet Rolston s
environmental ethic is surprisingly elegant (Holmes Rolston III, 2016, para. 2). His overall ideology
can be summarized in the following statement: Values exist in the world objectively apart from human
choice or human or animal consciousness (Smillie, n.d., para. 1). Rolston s ethic is informed by
teleology, from whence is derived his object with will argument. This philosophy is based on the idea
that all organisms have purpose in living, namely life itself; thus, value resides in the object with will

A Study On Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
The summer of 2010, my sister was diagnosed with a tumor the size of a walnut pressing on the
frontal lobe of her brain. With a hopeful prognosis of slow growth and surgery scheduled in late fall,
the outlook was promising. When she went in for surgery the doctors found a lesion instead of the
tumor they had diagnosed her with. The seemingly positive news turned dark as they explained they d
need to biopsy the tissue to understand what had caused it. In the middle of my second fall semester at
Edmonds Community College, my sister underwent endless scans and tests. When she began
experiencing severe migraines, aural hallucinations, seizures, and severe mood destabilization, I drove
to as many of her appointments in Seattle as I could and spent weekends with her where she lived with
my mother in Centralia. Though we avoided discussing her condition, I couldn t stop imagining the
potential fatal outcome. Previously diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, they advised my
sister to start an aggressive treatment approach as her O.C.D. was possibly a result of a lesion and
their growth would aggravate the disorder. The doctors expected lesion growth and possible
appearance of more lesions over time alongside a decline in her cognitive function. Neither my sister
nor I handled this news well. While her decline was sharp and her depression set in quickly, I
struggled with making it to class and completing my assignments. Each day I pushed myself to be
present and

3d Printing And Its Effects On The Economy
According to techrepublic.com, the popularity of 3D printing is expected to grow up to 75 percent
within the next year which will create a huge rise in popularity of the new technology. Because of this,
a new market of 3D printing will begin to grow and emerge very rapidly due to curiosity which makes
this new technology a huge effecting factor on the economy. 3D printing is the process of additive
manufacturing which creates objects by using a nozzle with a ABS plastic filament, melting the
plastic, and layering the plastic in the appropriate locations in order to create an object. Though it is a
relatively simple process, it takes a lot of calibration and fine tuning and the end result can be
breathtaking. Because of the rapid growth and popularity of this new technology, many different
people, commercial manufactures to household families, are curious to get their hands on a 3D printer.
Since the technology is bound to change the way people and businesses handle daily tasks, 3D
printing may have some negative economic effects such as hurting international trade with other
countries and harmful health effects due to the chemicals used in the printing process. Though these
are harmful to the economy, there are even more positive effects such as helping provide clean water
for 3rd world countries, producing customized products for less money, and creating extra educational
aids for impaired students. Because this technology is so new and still evolving, especially in public

Essay about Conflict Resolution Case Study
Conflict Resolution Case Study Conflict is inescapable, having the ability to recognize, understand,
and resolve conflicts are important in both personal and professional lives. Myatt (2012) states that
conflict in the workplace is unavoidable; if left unresolved, workplace conflict may result in loss of
productivity and the creation of barriers that can inhibit creativity, cooperation, and collaboration. It is
vital to embrace conflict and address problems through effective conflict resolution tactics because if
not handled appropriately, conflict will escalate. If not handled properly, conflict may significantly
affect employee morale, increase turnover, and even result in litigation, ultimately affecting the overall

About 2:30 in the afternoon, M.E. was in her patient s room and J.P. confronted her in front of the
respiratory staff and students that were present about why she was/wasn t doing certain things and
what was making her so slow; J.P. caught M.E. off guard and was very abrasive, belittling and
verbally abusive; M.E. felt attacked and embarrassed, especially since this behavior took place in front
of colleagues. J.P. felt frustrated that M.E. was not more competent and efficient in her care and
confronted her about it. After the confrontation, there were no words spoken between the two of them
for days and even though months have passed, there is still an obvious tension and unresolved conflict
between these two individuals. There is currently a noticeable effort being put forth by both women
but the conflict they experienced is not yet fixed. Cost of the Conflict The cost of the conflict does not
only affect M.E. and J.P., but ripples out to affect their fellow nurses and other co workers, and may
even affect patients and their families to an extent. This conflict caused suffering of many people;
M.E. was angered, upset, and stressed about the situation and still is uncomfortable around J.P. which
is a shame because J.P. has so much nursing experience that could help M.E. in her nursing career. The
respiratory staff that was in the room and overheard the confrontation was deeply upset about the
situation and spoke to M.E. about it and how it affected the people in

Realism In The Yellow Wall-Paper
The Period of Realism and Naturalism
Realism and Naturalism are literary movements that appeared across America in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries. The two are sometimes used interchangeably, sometimes used as opposites
(Baym and Levine 902). Realism and Naturalism emerged in numerous aspects of life, but are most
evident in literature. The purpose of realism is to demonstrate idealistic views of life in favor of
detailed, accurate descriptions of the everyday (Baym and Levine 902). On the other hand, naturalism
focuses on a more romantic, view of human life than realism (Baym and Levine 902). Authors that
concentrated on realism include Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Within their stories, it
becomes clear on which issues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These two characters have different levels of rationality. Of the two, Mrs. Mallard is slightly more
rational. She is an eloquent woman who knows what she wants. Mrs. Mallard depicts life in a very
clear and intellectual way. It seems, though, that she is able to do such extraordinary logical thinking
after the passing of her husband. Now that the burden of her husband has been severed, she no longer
has a mental strain. An example of this is when she states, In the street below a peddler was crying his
wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless
sparrows were twittering in the eaves (556). This line shows how sharp she can be now that she does
not have her husband s powerful will bending hers (556). Aside from that, Mrs. Mallard s sense of
hearing is perceptive and she is oddly mindful of her surroundings. The narrator from The Yellow Wall
paper is more irrational and the cause might be the lack of freedom her superiors impose. Due to her
oppression, she has become obsessed with the wall paper. She stares at the wall paper with the purpose
of finding meaning in her hopeless life. Consequently, this is how she passes her time since she is
confined to a room with very limited things to do. As time passes, she becomes overly obsessed with
the wall paper as she points out that, they connect diagonally, and the sprawling outlines run

Nervous Habits Of Han Essay
nervous habits Modern verse: As a young adult, he does not know how to handle shit. He would want
to control his habits out of paranoia. Nothing too severe! Han has an exceptionally solid sense of self
preservation. ( for reasons I have yet to figure out, other than it being a thorough case of inherent
inclination ). I m sure Han is keen enough to have realized he has them early on and wouldn t want
people to take advantage of them in any way, shape, or form. Depending on the occupation and his
age, the requirement, and the skill of handling himself will vary. In a modern verse, Han is less
controlled and skirts along apparent with his habits. After all, we all have them. Han will stammer at
times, delay in replying, rub at his face tiredly, especially over his eyes ( good way to break from the
situation at hand ), laugh nervously, make abrupt attempts in relieving the weighty air, gesticulate
excessively, and finally, deliver sudden ultimatums to circumvent situations posthaste and or just walk

Tommy John Research Paper
Tommy John Surgery
Tommy John surgery, or more well known as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, is a surgery in
which a ligament in the medial elbow is replaced with a ligament from elsewhere in the body. This
replacement ligament is usually taken from the forearm, hamstring, or foot of the patient. This
ligament is needed for everyday things such as twisting a doorknob. This injury is usually seen in
professional baseball pitchers because of the daily repetitive throwing and because of violent motions
from throwing a baseball. RA Dickey was born without a UCL and pitches in the majors. Doctors still
do not know how he can do this because you should not be able to do anything this way.
A torn elbow ligament was the most common cause of The Dead Arm Injury era, the 20th century.
This was uncommon before this time. Long before then, because of the lack of research on the injury,
this gave pitcher s a 1 in 100 chance of returning and being able to pitch. Until in 1974
Dr. Frank Jobe developed a procedure for pitcher Tommy John (who the surgery was named after).
With vivid research of the ligaments inside the medial elbow he developed a way to make the elbow
back to normal strength or in some cases much more stronger. This surgery consisted of the new
tendon being implanted and woven in a figure eight pattern through holes ... Show more content on

Even with this training a quick recovery is considered an elongated 13 months. Most people take close
to 18 months and however long it takes would not be able to pitch immediately. With rapid amounts of
these injuries starting to occur in the 20th century it quickly became a normal and expected thing for
pitchers to have to undergo this surgery at one point in their career. Some people believe this is
because of the game changing and baseball players beginning to throw curveballs at a very early

The Truth about Cowboy Types
For most Americans in this age, the word cowboy will call to mind iconic images of a horseman
wearing a wide brimmed hat, a belt of bullets, and a flannel shirt; he might be guiding his herd lazily
along grassy plains, singing folk songs around a campfire with his companions under a starry sky,
riding off with a beautiful ranch girl into an iconic sunset backdrop, or even wearing a mask and
enforcing vigilante justice in a small town terrorized by hardened western thugs or hostile Native
Americans. These clichés are drawn mostly from the hundreds of movies and television productions
that claim the title Western . This cinematic conception of the cowboy was a personification of the
American spirit of rugged individualism and intrepid pioneering but it is largely only the result of
Hollywood westerns of the 20th century, and not consistent with the actual reality of cowboy life.
While there were many different types of cowboys spread across the Americas with drastically
different lifestyles, mannerisms, reputations, and backgrounds, by far the most easily recognized are
the Anglo cowboys of the American West, and the Mexican vaqueros. As the eastern cattle herding
practices spread further west, and Mexican vaqueros moved north, they met in the American western
frontier; Moving further west to the semi arid plains, the habits and techniques of southeastern Anglo
cowboys changed substantially under the influence of Mexico s vaqueros (Slatta 18). Though from

Asperger s Syndrome Essay
Asperger s syndrome, which is also referred to as Asperger s disorder, is a type of Persuasive
Developmental Disorder. Persuasive Developmental Disorder or PDD are a group of conditions that
involve delays in the development of basic skills, the most recognizable of these skills is the ability to
communicate and socialize with others as well as use their own imagination. Although Asperger s
syndrome is similar in some ways to autism, there are important differences between the two. Children
with Asperger s syndrome typically function higher than those children with autism. In addition to
them being higher functioning; children with Asperger s syndrome generally have normal intelligence

Problems with social skills include difficulty interacting with others, are often awkward in social
situations, and have difficulty starting and maintaining a conversation. Individuals with Asperger s
syndrome may develop odd, repetitive movements, such as hand twitching or finger twisting. They
might also develop unusual rituals, such as getting dressed in a specific order, and are resistant to
change the ritual. Some communication difficulties people with Asperger s syndrome may exhibit are,
not being able to make eye contact when speaking with someone, trouble using facial expressions and
gestures, and understanding body language. They also have a tendency to misunderstand language in
context and are very literal in their use of language. Individuals could express limited range of
interests; they could develop an almost obsessive interest in a few areas, such as weather, topics in
school, or sports. Many individuals with Asperger s syndrome are exceedingly gifted or skilled in a
particular area, such as history or science. The coordination of individuals with Asperger s syndrome
may seem clumsy or awkward. There is no cure for Asperger s syndrome but early diagnosis and
treatment helps individuals to develop to their full potential. The principal goal of treatment is to
improve the overall ability of an individual to function. Behavioral therapy uses positive
reinforcement, self help, and social skills therapy to improve behavior and communication. Medicines
are most commonly used to treat problem behaviors, such as anxiety, obsessive compulsive behavior
or OCD, hyperactivity, and

ordered by Heydrich to be sent there.
By 1939, he was given complete control over the Reich Main Security Office (RSHA). This final
group he d gained power over, involving the SD, Criminal Police and Gestapo was the group

Taking a Look at Acid Rain
The environmental challenge facing society that I have chosen to discuss is Acid Rain. The effects of
acid rain were first noticed 150 years ago in Britain, and to this day are still an issue. The pH scale
allows us to decide whether a substance is acidic or basic. If the substance has a pH of 7, it is neutral,
below seven it is acidic, or above seven it is basic. Precipitation normally has a pH of 5.6, slightly
acidic due to the CO2 in the atmosphere mixing with the rainwater to create a weak carbonic acid.
Human induced pollution also plays a role in acid rain by releasing harmful gases such as sulphur
dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. This is mostly done by the burning of fossil fuels and
in industrial processes such as metal production (Middleton,2008). In agriculture, ammonia from
nitrogenous fertilisers and manures escapes to the atmosphere by volatilisation (Tennesen, 2010).
In the past, places like North America and Europe had the worst reputation in regard to acid rain levels
due to their industrialization period. However, now it is countries such as East Asia (especially parts of
china), that have the highest levels of sulphur and nitrogen oxide gas emissions. This is mainly due to
the fact that most parts of East Asia are only beginning to develop now and industrialisation is their
main concern (Middleton, 2008). In Western Europe anthropogenic emissions of sulphur decreased by
over 60% between 1980 2000 and in the use and Canada they were down

Rome And Han Comparison Essay

Group LEQ: Rome and Han Comparison
By the second and third centuries C.E, trade routes were connecting many civilizations across the land
and sea. These routes traded not only goods, but new beliefs and values as well. However, something
malicious also spread through these trade routes: disease. Both the Roman and Han empires
experienced imperial decline due to epidemic diseases spread by trade routes as well as conflicts with
neighboring forces due to clashing beliefs, however the Han Empire faced more internal problems,
whereas the Romans faced unrest from outside of the empire.

China mainly faced internal struggles, while the Romans mainly faced problems from external
sources. One problem was the aristocrats forming factions among each other, with each faction
seeking to gain more power for itself, which weakened the central government. Another problem was
the uneven distribution of land. Many landowners that possessed most of the land, were powerful
figures in the government who shifted the tax burden onto peasants. This angered the peasants, who
started the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 C.E. While the rebellion was unsuccessful in overthrowing
the empire, the unhappiness of the peasants would later lead to many more uprisings. By 220 C.E, the
emperor had no real political power and the Han generals abolished the empire and divided it into
three large kingdoms. On the other hand, the Romans were faced with a massive empire that they
struggled to manage. From 235 to 284 C.E, there were 26 different barrack emperors who controlled
Rome. The position was unstable, and many of them were betrayed and killed. The Roman economy
was also going downhill, and they were also faced with a population decline. These factors also
created a lack of resources needed to protect the empire. China s internal problems were due to the
peasants feeling like they were being mistreated; Rome s problems were due to its size and the

How Did The British Influence On American Culture
The transformation of administration architecture during independence and colonization
Politics has always been closely related to the transformations of architecture styles. The transition of
one region s political dynamics will certainly influence the exterior forms and the structural
connotations of the symbolic buildings. Different kind of political changes will also result different
kind of architectural stylistic shift. The independence of Turkey as a new nation and the colonization
of India by the British empire reflected the influence of political changes in architecture and how new
architecture style is introduced during such periods.
The independence of Turkey and its early development as a country full of energetic youth required a
combination of two almost contradictory ideals : In order to illustrate its disassociation with the past
Ottoman authority the new government desired international style which expresses scientific
modernization and political liberation; However, the Kemalists also wanted to preserve a certain
degree of cultural root in order to boost, if not, maintain nationalistic devotion of its citizens.
Consequently, a new hybridization of theses two ideals emerged ... Show more content on

Julius Caesar And Brutus Tragic Hero Analysis
A tragic hero tries to do the right thing but has flaws in their character that prevents them from being a
true hero. Scholars argue over whether Brutus or Caesar is the tragic hero in the play Julius Caesar by
William Shakespeare. Both men have tragic flaws which cause their downfall. They are both
ambitious. Caesar wanted all the power to himself. On the contrary, Brutus wanted what was best for
Rome and to keep a good reputation. Brutus is the tragic hero of the play since he falls the farthest due
to the fact that he is too trusting of everyone, he naively allows his enemy to speak out about him, and
he lacks self confidence. To begin with, Brutus is too trusting of those around him. Brutus s friend
Cassius recognizes that Brutus is driven by what is best for Rome. Because of this Cassius devises a
plan to plant a fake petition from the people of Rome stating that Caesar needs to be executed. Brutus
never even questions that the petition is real. After reading the petition Brutus response is:
Am I entreated
To speak and strike? O Rome, I make thee promise,
If the redress will follow, thou receivest
Thy full petition at the hand of Brutus! (Shakespeare 2.1.55 58)
Brutus agrees to do whatever it takes to help Rome receive justice, even if it means to use violence
against his friend. Lastly, due to Brutus killing Caesar, war broke out in Rome. Brutus is creating more
chaos for Rome than Caesar is. He is naive and thinks he is doing what is best for Rome, but really
ends up hurting Rome. A true hero would have been sceptical about the petition before making
decisions about it. Since Brutus is too trusting he did not think twice about the petition which
ultimately, leads to his downfall. Another example of Brutus as the tragic hero is his naivety. He
foolishly allows his enemy to speak at Caesar s funeral. After Caesar s death the funeral is planned for
all of Rome to attend. Brutus allows Mark Antony, Caesar s right hand man, to speak at the funeral.
This allows Mark Antony to turn the crowd against Brutus. Mark Antony makes Brutus look like the
bad guy by saying: If Brutus so unkindly knocked, or no. For Brutus, as you know, was Caesar s
angel. Judge, O you gods, how dearly Caesar loved him! This was

The Black Hills Of South Dakota
Lets take a trip back in time to 1884 in the Black Hills of South Dakota. A New York lawyer had just
traveled there to inspect mining claims in that region. The man s name was Charles E. Rushmore.
Rushmore was curious by one of the mountains and asked a towns person what the name of the
mountain was. The towns person replied saying it had no name. From then on Charles Rushmore
started calling it Rushmore Peak. Over time it became known as Mount Rushmore (history.com).
During the following years the area of the Black Hills decided they wanted to start attracting tourist
the region. I the early 1920s the state historian of South Dakota, Doane Robinson, came up with an
idea to attract tourist. He thought of the idea to to carve famous historic heroes of the west into the
side of the mountain (history.com). In 1924, Robinson decided to contact the famous American
sculptor, Gutzon Borgium, about his idea. Borgium at the time was working on another project for
Georgia, but Robinson was able to convince him to abandon his project and come
Before picture of Mount Rushmore to the Black Hills. When Borgium arrived in South Dakota he
suggested that they use George Washington and Abraham Lincoln because of their significance to
America. Later, he also decided to add Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt. Robinson and
Borgium both decided that the sculpture would be dedicated to these four men to recognize their
contributions to the birth of democracy and growth of the United States.

Jacksonian Democracy Vs. Jeffersonian Democracy
Being very influential voices of their time, Andrew Jackson and Thomas Jefferson helped to create the
Jeffersonian Democracy and Jacksonian Democracy. Although there were many differences between
the two, there were also many similarities that will be discussed in this report. In this report, the
History of Jackson and Jeffersons past will be explained, as well as how they became President and
what influences led to the decisions. It will also explain some of the political decisions that led to
Jackson and Jefferson having their own democracies. Some of the topics that will be spoken of is
salvery, racism towards Indains, Farmers and Commercial lands, the Bank of the United States, and
more topics to describe their similarities and differences in their techniques.
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13th, 1743 in Shadwell, Virginia. During his lifetime he
accomplished many things even before becoming president. He was one of the draftsmen of The
Declaration of Independance, he was the nations first secretary of state, he was also the second Vice
President and later became the third President of the United States, and was also responsible for the

Benjamin s Farewell To The Modern World
At this late hour, the man of the crowd finds himself in one of the new department stores where
customers are still milling about. It is here that Benjamin claims the flâneur makes his last
promenade...he roamed through the labyrinth of commodities as he had once roamed through the
labyrinth of the city. Contrary to Baudelaire s view, Benjamin believes that the flâneur met his demise
with the triumph of consumer capitalism, introduced by the urban changes instituted by Baron
Haussmann. As intellect and reason ceased to soften the desires encouraged by the modern city, the
individual surrenders to the ever more extravagant, ever more conspicuous, displays of merchandise.
The flâneur could no longer find the inspiration and meaning for his ... Show more content on

Benjamin makes it very clear that flânerie could hardly have assumed the importance it did without
the arcades, which allowed the flâneur to continue his activities despite inclement weather. He cites an
1852 illustrated guide to Paris which refers to the arcades as glass roofed, marble paneled corridors
extending through whole blocks of buildings...Lining both sides of these corridors, which get their
light from above, are the most elegant shops, so that the passage is a city, a world in miniature. It is in
this world that Benjamin claims the flâneur is most at home. Arcades were enjoying undiminished
popularity in Baudelaire s Paris, and the flâneur favored them because there he would not be exposed
to the sight of carriages which scorned to recognize pedestrians as rivals. It was even briefly
fashionable at this time to take turtles for a walk in the arcades; the flâneurs liked to have the turtles
set the pace for them. For Benjamin, the arcade is the perfect manifestation of way the street presents
itself to the flâneur, a protected miniature streetscape, and the department store is simply its

What Is The Sources Of Anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Sources of Anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Out of the top ten GHG producing countries in
the world, China, by far, produces the most GHG emissions yearly, with production reaching
approximately 10,684 MMT CO2 Eq. (Figure 3) (World Resources Institute, 2015). Although the
United States produces 5,823 MMT CO2 Eq. per year, it ranks second for total GHG emission
production, followed by the European Union (4,123 MMT CO2 Eq.), India (2,887 MMT CO2 Eq.),
the Russian Federation (2,254 MMT CO2 Eq.), Indonesia (1,981 MMT CO2 Eq.), Brazil (1,823 MMT

CH4, comprising 54.52% and 45.48% of the total, respectively (Table 1) (IPCC, 2013; EPA, 2015).
Nitrous oxide emissions were mainly from agricultural soil management (263.70 MMT CO2 Eq.) with
minor emissions from manure management (17.30 MMT CO2 Eq.) and field burning of agricultural
residues (0.10 MMT CO2 Eq.) (IPCC, 2013; EPA, 2015). On the country, the most prominent CH4

from manure management (61.40 MMT CO2 Eq.), rice cultivation (8.30 MMT CO2 Eq.), and field
burning of agricultural residues (0.30 MMT CO2 Eq.) (IPCC, 2013; EPA, 2015). Methane production

Pandas
Did you know that Giant Pandas can die from being overweight? There are endangered species all
over the world, one of them is the Giant Panda. Pandas are a fascinating creature and an interesting
animal to learn about. Pandas are mostly vegetarians but they do eat some meat. They mostly eat
bamboo and leaves. On (wwf.panda.org) it says that pandas mainly eat bamboo their second chose are
leaves and some meat. A panda s main diet is bamboo, but they eat one percent of meat which is
smaller prey like, mice, rats, pikas, and other small rodents. Meat is not their main food they eat meat
so they get protean. Giant pandas also like to eat stems and shoots of various bamboo species. They

have different lifespans when they live in the wild.
The difference between pandas in the wild and in captivity. The captive ones can live up to 30 years.
According to (www.livescience.com) they live longer in captivity than they do in the wild. When they
live in the wild they often die from being overweight. However they don t always live the same length
as they do in the wild. The ones out in the wild live between 15 20. According to Christina Stevens on

they need a day, in the wild they are not (http://animals.mom.me).
The pandas that live in captivity survive longer because they are provided with the food they need, not

Christian Elements In Beowulf
The intermingling of Christian ideas and classical rhetoric has set the foundation for many centuries of
literature works. The overlap of elements appeals to readers who are accustomed to Biblical language
while simultaneously engaging with their imaginative experience of a secular world, an expression
that is observed in the epic poem Beowulf. Commonly cited as one of the most important works of
Old English literature, the poem provides valuable insight into a culture that resembles our own
societal challenges while simultaneously remaining distant from the present day world. This analytical
essay will focus on the strategic use of words and phrases and how the poets emphasis on religious
association invokes the answers to many central human perplexities. Through its use of repetitive
elements and various motifs within Christian and pagan values, the poet builds on the many elements
within virtuous philosophy. Although many analytical dissertations interpret the influence that
Beowulf s diction has on Christian ideals, it is critical to examine how the poem s religious expression
affects its pagan characters. Many literary works incorporate stock elements to continuously keep their
readers engaged in the purpose of its context. These elements are distinct analogous words or phrases
that are chosen to convey the rhetorical device. The author of Beowulf repeatedly acknowledged God
as an all mighty figure that overshadows the lives of both its readers and the

Racism And The Gay Community
In a time when countless citizens of the United State were homophobic, how were Blackmun and
Stevens, both of which were thought to be conservatives, open to the claims of the gay community?
My answer to this question before I read a single word assigned, was easy they must have known
someone who was gay. I believe it is simple to be against something that you don t understand
anything about. It is pompous to say that homosexuals are immoral, perverted, disgusting sinners
when you have never knowingly interacted with a homosexual. However, becoming acquainted with
someone will likely change your mind; especially if it is someone you would consider a friend. Being
able to put a face and an emotion to discrimination often times make the discrimination appalling. The
Justices involved in this case ruled the way they did individually because of their personal
relationships, or lack thereof, with gay people. Come to find out, I was right regarding Blackmun.
Justice Blackmun knew gay couples: he was able to put a face and an emotion to the discrimination
(Eskridge 165). I was unable to find out if Justice Stevens knew any gay couples, but I would still
contend he probably did. However, both men had other reasons to dissent. Both Blackmun and
Stevens believed in privacy laws and believed your home was a place the government could not
interfere. Blackmun believed White was challenging the ongoing validity of Roe, a precedent that
Blackmun guarded with the ferocity of a tigress

Food Waste Of Food
In 2012, enough food was discarded at the retail and consumer levels alone to provide 2,000 kcal per
day to 84% of the US adult population (Spiker et al). In comparison to this fact, it is also estimated
that 14.6 percent of US households are labeled food insecure (Bartfield et al). It is deeply concerning
that a large portion of the US population faces hunger on a daily basis while so much food is being
wasted just at the consumer and retail levels. Furthermore, this wasted food does not account for the
food that never even sees the market due to over production food deemed unfit for the market,
spillage, etc. This means there is even more food wasted that could provide for the hungry.
Food waste, meaning any food product produced and not consumed, occurs at three main levels:
production, retail, and consumer. Losses in production occur when food is discarded before arriving at
its destination after leaving the farm. Losses in retail occur when food is discarded before being sold
to restaurants or individuals. Finally, consumer losses occur when any food is discarded after the retail
level. Various reasons for discarding food on any level include but are not limited to spoilage,
aesthetics (e.g. bruising, coloring, size, shape), overproduction or over purchasing, and damaged
packaging. It should also be noted that a difficulty arises when analyzing food loss because of inedible
parts of food. For example, meat sold bone in consists of a total weight when sold to

The Relationships Between Permanence And Place
There are two types of relationships between permanence and place. Architectural distinction helps to
particularize a place from its surroundings. It is a static permanence. It is related to physical
relationship between the building and place, its endurance, firmness and stability. Second fundamental
factor is time. Time is responsible to create long lasting dispositions resulting in notable events which
help to create permanent traditions that are embedded to its place. This dynamic permanence is based
on mental relationship between community and place, through consciousness, awareness and various
activities related to it. (Tuan, 2014)

Buildings have lifespan, and eventually it comes to its end. A physical permanence of the building is

The Tortilla Curtain Analysis
In The Tortilla Curtain, T.C. Boyle strives to show the economic and social divide between illegal
immigrants and middle class American citizens. He does this by showing Candido Rincon, an
immigrant from Tepoztlan, Mexico, crossing paths multiple times with Delaney Mossbacher, a white
middle class American living in the complex of Arroyo Blanco. Delaney, a self proclaimed Democrat,
over his interactions with Candido and other Hispanics, deviates from his liberal views and descends
into overt racism. Likewise, Candido has the intentions that mirror his name the name Candido comes
from the latin word candidus, a, um which has a connotation of pureness but as he gets more and more
desperate, he diverges from his honest work and resorts to stealing and scavenging. Candido s and
Delaney s actions display each s descent into savagery. The coyote, a traditional symbol of savagery,
applies to both Candido and Delaney. Delaney writes an entire entrance into his nature blog Pilgrim at
Topanga Creek regarding the coyotes: yet I can t help thinking too of the missing pets, the trail of
suspicion, the next baby left unattended on the patio. The coyotes keep coming, breeding up to fill in
the gaps, moving in where the living is easy. They are cunning, versatile, hungry and unstoppable

Candido. Each phrase is a specific reference to a dynamic or event of the story: the trail

Persuasion Is An Act Or Process Of Appealing
According to McLean (2010), persuasion is an act or process of appealing to reason or presenting
arguments to induce your audience to do something or to change their beliefs or values. Motivation,
on the other hand, is the force or stimulus to influence your audience to consider your arguments and
adopt your position (McLean, 2010). In short, persuasion is the process and motivation is the stimulus
to bring about the change. For example, when you want to pitch a sale, persuasion involves presenting
good features associated with the products, potential profit, offering good customer service and
analysis of current market demand. Motivation, in contrast, involves incentives like commission,

Moving on, the users of the principle of commitment and consistency prevails their audiences that
they will embrace and honor their word or promises made. If you have rented a room, apartment or
house, you inevitably have the experience of signing a lease agreement in which your landlord is
asking you to engage in commitment and consistency by legally requesting to meet your monthly rent

The principle of consensus employs the tendency of people follow the path of herd mentality. This is
how sellers on the online retailers like Amazon and Ebay.com find potential customers. If their
customer feedback system is flooded with positive testimonials or experiences from their previous
customers, their potential customers will perceive their products and/or customer services positively.
Lastly, the principle of liking comprises of formulating a way to make your audiences feel safe and

are four elements to a contract. The four elements to a contract are agreement, consideration,
contractual capacity, and legal object. The first element of agreement would be deemed to exist if the

Such a contract may be verbal or in writing under a standard residential lease agreement. A breach of
contract is when one party fails to uphold any part or term of the contract. Some facts that may

covenant of quiet enjoyment. The landlord makes the promise when renting that each tenant has the

the other tenants. This causes Sam to Breach his contract and gives the landlord the right to evict him.
Also Sam breached his contract when the landlord states that his apartment cannot be used for

International Navistar 6.0l Powerstroke Case Study

With a mere 275 horsepower it was outperformed by all competition. Along with the dreadful
horsepower, Ford owners complained that the trucks they purchased yielded inadequate miles per
gallon (Powerstrokehub). To compensate for both these issues, for introduces a much higher pressure
fuel delivery system that would allow for the cleaner burning of fuel and overall less fuel needed to
run the engine. Ford and International Navistar also introduced a newly designed smart turbocharger.
This allowed the turbo housing to expand and contract depending on the throttle position (Truck

gain and output resulting in better fuel economy. Tighter machining tolerances were also implied for
almost all of the engine components that went into the 6.0l Powerstroke allowing grater compression

Impact of War and Violence on Children in A Long Way Gone...
Children exposed to violence within their communities are left with emotions of hopelessness,
insecurity, and doubt. Historical events such as the war on terrorism, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,
and the tragic events of September 11th have had a detrimental effect on the entire nation, including
the children. Although every child is not directly affected by the aspects of war, it somehow has an
emotional effect on all. The involvement of a nation with war affects every individual differently,
whether it is out of fear, anger, doubt, hope, or love. In the short novel A Long Way Gone by Ishmael

The circumstances surrounding September 11th 2001 seem to be too much for a young child to grasp.
At the age of eleven, I remember this day so vividly, but at such a young age I was unable to

with time I have come to understand that situations as this one affects a nation as a whole. It seemed to
be my first exposure to war in which I could remember. Beforehand, I knew nothing about what

work in an environment where I come in close contact with children whose parents serve in the
military. Although many of these children have no idea about the purpose of war or the outcome it
may bring, they do know it as the single thing that takes their parents away for months at a time. I am

Working Family Thesis Statement
A. Thesis Statement: Today, many working families are having issues finding a good balance between
work and family life. There are options available for those who seek help to find a better balance
between the two. Many of these options range from organizational practices or policies, training,
corporate involvement and even laws. II. Most families today are on a dual income. However, with the
advance technology available, more companies are expecting more from their employees. A.
According to Kara Heissman the average worker works 55 hours a week now (Lifehack.org). It s hard
to disconnect from work even when we aren t in the office. We now bring work home with us by our
smart phones and tablets. We still receive and respond to emails,

The Theme Of Revolt Of The Rats By Reed Blitzerman
Revolt of the Rats by Reed Blitzerman is a suspense novella following two storylines: one is set in
Depression era America and the second in the automotive industry in the 1990s. Kahle Desireau
applies for a job at Motomax automotive plant; he has just left the army after six years of service. His
primary motivation for considering Motomax is that he wants to be near Beezor Wasikowska, the
woman of his infatuation. The Frampton plant readily employs Kahle, and thus begins his new career
as a factory rat. The second storyline focuses on Eli Steiner, a farmer struggling to keep his
smallholding during the Great Depression. Once he recovers from smallpox, he establishes a second
industry, a machine shop, on his land. He intends the shop to be ... Show more content on

Important aspects of the story are unclear, namely Kahle s ability to see auras, his military background
and what his story had to do with Eli s. At times, I wondered if some details and characters were
forgotten in the course of the writing. Because of this, the story had a stilted, perfunctory quality that
made it difficult to read and confusing to navigate. It read like a first draft, not a finished product. The
end of the story never resolved the problems or questions set by the premise. I understand that this is
the first book of a series, but a clear, resolved ending is more satisfying to a reader than a blunt one.
Since Revolt of the Rats needs professional editing and a tighter rein to keep the plot on track, I would
not recommend it to readers, so I give it 2 out of 4. The editing and typesetting issues were the main
reasons I could not give this book a higher rating, but the undeveloped nature of the story took it down
another rating point. The theme of Revolt of the Rats has the potential to appeal to an audience living
in a capitalist economy and certainly will once the story is polished, professionally edited and
developed into a finished

Reflection Of A Homecoming Service
September 10, 2017, was the annual homecoming service at Morgantown First Church of the
Nazarene in Morgantown, Kentucky, followed by a fellowship meal. The meal was a combination of
store bought foods, simple traditional dishes like macaroni and cheese, and special homemade dishes.
Two old ping pong tables that once served as the main food table have been replaced by white plastic
tables, and this year, the tables were even ornamented with a centerpiece to match the other tables in
the fellowship hall. The line starts on the right hand table, so people can walk around the table to fill
their plates and grab drinks before filing into the hall. Meat is always placed first, followed by sides
and casseroles before bread and deviled eggs at the end of the procession. IGA fried chicken (wings,
breasts, drumsticks) supplied by the church and ham cooked by the pastor s husband sat beside Elaine
Johnson s homemade fried chicken tenders, which are always gone the fastest. Homemade sides
included dressing, green bean casserole, cream style corn, pinto beans, broccoli cheese casserole, egg
salad, and biscuits.
Other sides, that I refer to as simple, are recipes followed by the recipe that anyone could fix. These
taste relatively the same no matter who cooks them whereas the homemade dishes can only be made
and brought by certain people, and no one else can prepare them exactly or as well as the original. The
simple sides included honey mustard based potato salad with bacon, green

  • 2. The Central Dilemma Of Environmental Ethics The central dilemma in environmental ethics is determining the value of nature: what kind of value does it have, what aspects of the environment have value, and from what or whom does environmental value ultimately derive? Many philosophers have proposed answers to these inquiries, but every ethic is weak in one or more of these areas. Holmes Rolston III, an American philosopher, preacher, and naturalist, has proposed a deontological argument that addresses each of the key subjects in the debate surrounding the valuation of nature (Holmes Rolston III, 2016, para. 1 2, 4). Although several essential components of his case include numerous references to macroevolution, an aspect with which Young Earth Christians would disagree, his ethic is logical, well crafted, and on the whole aligns with a Biblical perspective of Creation. It would not seem at first that a former Presbyterian pastor would be especially interested in the realm of environmental philosophy, yet Rolston s environmental ethic is surprisingly elegant (Holmes Rolston III, 2016, para. 2). His overall ideology can be summarized in the following statement: Values exist in the world objectively apart from human choice or human or animal consciousness (Smillie, n.d., para. 1). Rolston s ethic is informed by teleology, from whence is derived his object with will argument. This philosophy is based on the idea that all organisms have purpose in living, namely life itself; thus, value resides in the object with will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Study On Obsessive Compulsive Disorder The summer of 2010, my sister was diagnosed with a tumor the size of a walnut pressing on the frontal lobe of her brain. With a hopeful prognosis of slow growth and surgery scheduled in late fall, the outlook was promising. When she went in for surgery the doctors found a lesion instead of the tumor they had diagnosed her with. The seemingly positive news turned dark as they explained they d need to biopsy the tissue to understand what had caused it. In the middle of my second fall semester at Edmonds Community College, my sister underwent endless scans and tests. When she began experiencing severe migraines, aural hallucinations, seizures, and severe mood destabilization, I drove to as many of her appointments in Seattle as I could and spent weekends with her where she lived with my mother in Centralia. Though we avoided discussing her condition, I couldn t stop imagining the potential fatal outcome. Previously diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, they advised my sister to start an aggressive treatment approach as her O.C.D. was possibly a result of a lesion and their growth would aggravate the disorder. The doctors expected lesion growth and possible appearance of more lesions over time alongside a decline in her cognitive function. Neither my sister nor I handled this news well. While her decline was sharp and her depression set in quickly, I struggled with making it to class and completing my assignments. Each day I pushed myself to be present and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. 3d Printing And Its Effects On The Economy According to techrepublic.com, the popularity of 3D printing is expected to grow up to 75 percent within the next year which will create a huge rise in popularity of the new technology. Because of this, a new market of 3D printing will begin to grow and emerge very rapidly due to curiosity which makes this new technology a huge effecting factor on the economy. 3D printing is the process of additive manufacturing which creates objects by using a nozzle with a ABS plastic filament, melting the plastic, and layering the plastic in the appropriate locations in order to create an object. Though it is a relatively simple process, it takes a lot of calibration and fine tuning and the end result can be breathtaking. Because of the rapid growth and popularity of this new technology, many different people, commercial manufactures to household families, are curious to get their hands on a 3D printer. Since the technology is bound to change the way people and businesses handle daily tasks, 3D printing may have some negative economic effects such as hurting international trade with other countries and harmful health effects due to the chemicals used in the printing process. Though these are harmful to the economy, there are even more positive effects such as helping provide clean water for 3rd world countries, producing customized products for less money, and creating extra educational aids for impaired students. Because this technology is so new and still evolving, especially in public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Conflict Resolution Case Study Conflict Resolution Case Study Conflict is inescapable, having the ability to recognize, understand, and resolve conflicts are important in both personal and professional lives. Myatt (2012) states that conflict in the workplace is unavoidable; if left unresolved, workplace conflict may result in loss of productivity and the creation of barriers that can inhibit creativity, cooperation, and collaboration. It is vital to embrace conflict and address problems through effective conflict resolution tactics because if not handled appropriately, conflict will escalate. • 7. Realism In The Yellow Wall-Paper The Period of Realism and Naturalism Realism and Naturalism are literary movements that appeared across America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The two are sometimes used interchangeably, sometimes used as opposites (Baym and Levine 902). Realism and Naturalism emerged in numerous aspects of life, but are most evident in literature. The purpose of realism is to demonstrate idealistic views of life in favor of detailed, accurate descriptions of the everyday (Baym and Levine 902). On the other hand, naturalism focuses on a more romantic, view of human life than realism (Baym and Levine 902). Authors that concentrated on realism include Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Of the two, Mrs. Mallard is slightly more rational. She is an eloquent woman who knows what she wants. Mrs. Mallard depicts life in a very clear and intellectual way. It seems, though, that she is able to do such extraordinary logical thinking after the passing of her husband. Now that the burden of her husband has been severed, she no longer has a mental strain. An example of this is when she states, In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves (556). This line shows how sharp she can be now that she does not have her husband s powerful will bending hers (556). Aside from that, Mrs. Mallard s sense of hearing is perceptive and she is oddly mindful of her surroundings. The narrator from The Yellow Wall paper is more irrational and the cause might be the lack of freedom her superiors impose. Due to her oppression, she has become obsessed with the wall paper. She stares at the wall paper with the purpose of finding meaning in her hopeless life. Consequently, this is how she passes her time since she is confined to a room with very limited things to do. Han has an exceptionally solid sense of self preservation. ( for reasons I have yet to figure out, other than it being a thorough case of inherent inclination ). I m sure Han is keen enough to have realized he has them early on and wouldn t want people to take advantage of them in any way, shape, or form. Depending on the occupation and his age, the requirement, and the skill of handling himself will vary. In a modern verse, Han is less controlled and skirts along apparent with his habits. After all, we all have them. Han will stammer at times, delay in replying, rub at his face tiredly, especially over his eyes ( good way to break from the situation at hand ), laugh nervously, make abrupt attempts in relieving the weighty air, gesticulate excessively, and finally, deliver sudden ultimatums to circumvent situations posthaste and or just walk the hell away. • 9. Tommy John Research Paper Tommy John Surgery Tommy John surgery, or more well known as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, is a surgery in which a ligament in the medial elbow is replaced with a ligament from elsewhere in the body. This replacement ligament is usually taken from the forearm, hamstring, or foot of the patient. This ligament is needed for everyday things such as twisting a doorknob. This injury is usually seen in professional baseball pitchers because of the daily repetitive throwing and because of violent motions from throwing a baseball. RA Dickey was born without a UCL and pitches in the majors. Doctors still do not know how he can do this because you should not be able to do anything this way. A torn elbow ligament was the most common cause of The Dead Arm Injury era, the 20th century. This was uncommon before this time. Long before then, because of the lack of research on the injury, this gave pitcher s a 1 in 100 chance of returning and being able to pitch. Until in 1974 Dr. Frank Jobe developed a procedure for pitcher Tommy John (who the surgery was named after). With vivid research of the ligaments inside the medial elbow he developed a way to make the elbow back to normal strength or in some cases much more stronger. This surgery consisted of the new tendon being implanted and woven in a figure eight pattern through holes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Truth about Cowboy Types For most Americans in this age, the word cowboy will call to mind iconic images of a horseman wearing a wide brimmed hat, a belt of bullets, and a flannel shirt; he might be guiding his herd lazily along grassy plains, singing folk songs around a campfire with his companions under a starry sky, riding off with a beautiful ranch girl into an iconic sunset backdrop, or even wearing a mask and enforcing vigilante justice in a small town terrorized by hardened western thugs or hostile Native Americans. These clichés are drawn mostly from the hundreds of movies and television productions that claim the title Western . This cinematic conception of the cowboy was a personification of the American spirit of rugged individualism and intrepid pioneering but it is largely only the result of Hollywood westerns of the 20th century, and not consistent with the actual reality of cowboy life. While there were many different types of cowboys spread across the Americas with drastically different lifestyles, mannerisms, reputations, and backgrounds, by far the most easily recognized are the Anglo cowboys of the American West, and the Mexican vaqueros. As the eastern cattle herding practices spread further west, and Mexican vaqueros moved north, they met in the American western frontier; Moving further west to the semi arid plains, the habits and techniques of southeastern Anglo cowboys changed substantially under the influence of Mexico s vaqueros (Slatta 18). • 14. Taking a Look at Acid Rain The environmental challenge facing society that I have chosen to discuss is Acid Rain. The effects of acid rain were first noticed 150 years ago in Britain, and to this day are still an issue. The pH scale allows us to decide whether a substance is acidic or basic. If the substance has a pH of 7, it is neutral, below seven it is acidic, or above seven it is basic. Precipitation normally has a pH of 5.6, slightly acidic due to the CO2 in the atmosphere mixing with the rainwater to create a weak carbonic acid. Human induced pollution also plays a role in acid rain by releasing harmful gases such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. This is mostly done by the burning of fossil fuels and in industrial processes such as metal production (Middleton,2008). In agriculture, ammonia from nitrogenous fertilisers and manures escapes to the atmosphere by volatilisation (Tennesen, 2010). In the past, places like North America and Europe had the worst reputation in regard to acid rain levels due to their industrialization period. However, now it is countries such as East Asia (especially parts of china), that have the highest levels of sulphur and nitrogen oxide gas emissions. This is mainly due to the fact that most parts of East Asia are only beginning to develop now and industrialisation is their main concern (Middleton, 2008). In Western Europe anthropogenic emissions of sulphur decreased by over 60% between 1980 2000 and in the use and Canada they were down ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These routes traded not only goods, but new beliefs and values as well. However, something malicious also spread through these trade routes: disease. Both the Roman and Han empires experienced imperial decline due to epidemic diseases spread by trade routes as well as conflicts with neighboring forces due to clashing beliefs, however the Han Empire faced more internal problems, whereas the Romans faced unrest from outside of the empire. China mainly faced internal struggles, while the Romans mainly faced problems from external sources. One problem was the aristocrats forming factions among each other, with each faction seeking to gain more power for itself, which weakened the central government. Another problem was the uneven distribution of land. Many landowners that possessed most of the land, were powerful figures in the government who shifted the tax burden onto peasants. This angered the peasants, who started the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 C.E. While the rebellion was unsuccessful in overthrowing the empire, the unhappiness of the peasants would later lead to many more uprisings. By 220 C.E, the emperor had no real political power and the Han generals abolished the empire and divided it into three large kingdoms. On the other hand, the Romans were faced with a massive empire that they struggled to manage. From 235 to 284 C.E, there were 26 different barrack emperors who controlled Rome. The position was unstable, and many of them were betrayed and killed. The Roman economy was also going downhill, and they were also faced with a population decline. The transition of one region s political dynamics will certainly influence the exterior forms and the structural connotations of the symbolic buildings. The independence of Turkey as a new nation and the colonization of India by the British empire reflected the influence of political changes in architecture and how new architecture style is introduced during such periods. The independence of Turkey and its early development as a country full of energetic youth required a combination of two almost contradictory ideals : In order to illustrate its disassociation with the past Ottoman authority the new government desired international style which expresses scientific modernization and political liberation; However, the Kemalists also wanted to preserve a certain degree of cultural root in order to boost, if not, maintain nationalistic devotion of its citizens. • 18. Julius Caesar And Brutus Tragic Hero Analysis A tragic hero tries to do the right thing but has flaws in their character that prevents them from being a true hero. Scholars argue over whether Brutus or Caesar is the tragic hero in the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. Both men have tragic flaws which cause their downfall. They are both ambitious. Caesar wanted all the power to himself. On the contrary, Brutus wanted what was best for Rome and to keep a good reputation. Brutus is the tragic hero of the play since he falls the farthest due to the fact that he is too trusting of everyone, he naively allows his enemy to speak out about him, and he lacks self confidence. To begin with, Brutus is too trusting of those around him. Brutus s friend Cassius recognizes that Brutus is driven by what is best for Rome. Because of this Cassius devises a plan to plant a fake petition from the people of Rome stating that Caesar needs to be executed. Brutus never even questions that the petition is real. After reading the petition Brutus response is: Am I entreated To speak and strike? O Rome, I make thee promise, If the redress will follow, thou receivest Thy full petition at the hand of Brutus! (Shakespeare 2.1.55 58) Brutus agrees to do whatever it takes to help Rome receive justice, even if it means to use violence against his friend. Lastly, due to Brutus killing Caesar, war broke out in Rome. Brutus is creating more chaos for Rome than Caesar is. He is naive and thinks he is doing what is best for Rome, but really ends up hurting Rome. A true hero would have been sceptical about the petition before making decisions about it. Since Brutus is too trusting he did not think twice about the petition which ultimately, leads to his downfall. Another example of Brutus as the tragic hero is his naivety. He foolishly allows his enemy to speak at Caesar s funeral. After Caesar s death the funeral is planned for all of Rome to attend. Brutus allows Mark Antony, Caesar s right hand man, to speak at the funeral. This allows Mark Antony to turn the crowd against Brutus. The overlap of elements appeals to readers who are accustomed to Biblical language while simultaneously engaging with their imaginative experience of a secular world, an expression that is observed in the epic poem Beowulf. Commonly cited as one of the most important works of Old English literature, the poem provides valuable insight into a culture that resembles our own societal challenges while simultaneously remaining distant from the present day world. This analytical essay will focus on the strategic use of words and phrases and how the poets emphasis on religious association invokes the answers to many central human perplexities. Through its use of repetitive elements and various motifs within Christian and pagan values, the poet builds on the many elements within virtuous philosophy. Although many analytical dissertations interpret the influence that Beowulf s diction has on Christian ideals, it is critical to examine how the poem s religious expression affects its pagan characters. Many literary works incorporate stock elements to continuously keep their readers engaged in the purpose of its context. These elements are distinct analogous words or phrases that are chosen to convey the rhetorical device. My answer to this question before I read a single word assigned, was easy they must have known someone who was gay. I believe it is simple to be against something that you don t understand anything about. It is pompous to say that homosexuals are immoral, perverted, disgusting sinners when you have never knowingly interacted with a homosexual. • 27. Food Waste Of Food In 2012, enough food was discarded at the retail and consumer levels alone to provide 2,000 kcal per day to 84% of the US adult population (Spiker et al). In comparison to this fact, it is also estimated that 14.6 percent of US households are labeled food insecure (Bartfield et al). It is deeply concerning that a large portion of the US population faces hunger on a daily basis while so much food is being wasted just at the consumer and retail levels. Furthermore, this wasted food does not account for the food that never even sees the market due to over production food deemed unfit for the market, spillage, etc. This means there is even more food wasted that could provide for the hungry. Food waste, meaning any food product produced and not consumed, occurs at three main levels: production, retail, and consumer. Losses in production occur when food is discarded before arriving at its destination after leaving the farm. Losses in retail occur when food is discarded before being sold to restaurants or individuals. Finally, consumer losses occur when any food is discarded after the retail level. Various reasons for discarding food on any level include but are not limited to spoilage, aesthetics (e.g. bruising, coloring, size, shape), overproduction or over purchasing, and damaged packaging. • 31. The Tortilla Curtain Analysis In The Tortilla Curtain, T.C. Boyle strives to show the economic and social divide between illegal immigrants and middle class American citizens. He does this by showing Candido Rincon, an immigrant from Tepoztlan, Mexico, crossing paths multiple times with Delaney Mossbacher, a white middle class American living in the complex of Arroyo Blanco. Delaney, a self proclaimed Democrat, over his interactions with Candido and other Hispanics, deviates from his liberal views and descends into overt racism. Likewise, Candido has the intentions that mirror his name the name Candido comes from the latin word candidus, a, um which has a connotation of pureness but as he gets more and more desperate, he diverges from his honest work and resorts to stealing and scavenging. Candido s and Delaney s actions display each s descent into savagery. The coyote, a traditional symbol of savagery, applies to both Candido and Delaney. Delaney writes an entire entrance into his nature blog Pilgrim at Topanga Creek regarding the coyotes: yet I can t help thinking too of the missing pets, the trail of suspicion, the next baby left unattended on the patio. The coyotes keep coming, breeding up to fill in the gaps, moving in where the living is easy. They are cunning, versatile, hungry and unstoppable (215). The coyote described is clearly a symbol for illegal immigrants, and, more specifically, Candido. Each phrase is a specific reference to a dynamic or event of the story: the trail ... There are four elements to a contract. The four elements to a contract are agreement, consideration, contractual capacity, and legal object. The involvement of a nation with war affects every individual differently, whether it is out of fear, anger, doubt, hope, or love. The Theme Of Revolt Of The Rats By Reed Blitzerman Revolt of the Rats by Reed Blitzerman is a suspense novella following two storylines: one is set in Depression era America and the second in the automotive industry in the 1990s. Kahle Desireau applies for a job at Motomax automotive plant; he has just left the army after six years of service. His primary motivation for considering Motomax is that he wants to be near Beezor Wasikowska, the woman of his infatuation. The Frampton plant readily employs Kahle, and thus begins his new career as a factory rat. Important aspects of the story are unclear, namely Kahle s ability to see auras, his military background and what his story had to do with Eli s. At times, I wondered if some details and characters were forgotten in the course of the writing. Because of this, the story had a stilted, perfunctory quality that made it difficult to read and confusing to navigate. It read like a first draft, not a finished product. The end of the story never resolved the problems or questions set by the premise. I understand that this is the first book of a series, but a clear, resolved ending is more satisfying to a reader than a blunt one. Since Revolt of the Rats needs professional editing and a tighter rein to keep the plot on track, I would not recommend it to readers, so I give it 2 out of 4. The editing and typesetting issues were the main reasons I could not give this book a higher rating, but the undeveloped nature of the story took it down another rating point. The theme of Revolt of the Rats has the potential to appeal to an audience living in a capitalist economy and certainly will once the story is polished, professionally edited and developed into a finished ... The meal was a combination of store bought foods, simple traditional dishes like macaroni and cheese, and special homemade dishes. Two old ping pong tables that once served as the main food table have been replaced by white plastic tables, and this year, the tables were even ornamented with a centerpiece to match the other tables in the fellowship hall. The line starts on the right hand table, so people can walk around the table to fill their plates and grab drinks before filing into the hall. Meat is always placed first, followed by sides and casseroles before bread and deviled eggs at the end of the procession. Other sides, that I refer to as simple, are recipes followed by the recipe that anyone could fix.
