Seventy percent of broiler feed in Pakistan is produced in modern feedmills. Small feedmillers face financial difficulties due to lower volumes and higher raw material costs. In 2012-2013, a total of 6.4 million tons of poultry feed was produced by 150 feed mills in Pakistan, with a total turnover of PKR 256 billion. Feed industries in Pakistan face several problems, including a lack of proper storage facilities, high costs of imported ingredients due to currency fluctuations, improper handling and mixing of ingredients affecting quality, outdated software, limited funding and knowledge, and fluctuations in raw material prices.

1. Present status and problems of feed industries in Pakistan
Present status
Seventy percent of broiler feed in Pakistan is produced in modern feedmills equipped with
pelleting technology. Small feedmillers volume of business has been squeezed and in future may
become non-profitable due to small volumes and higher cost of raw materials.

2. Problems faced by feed industries of Pakistan
1. Lack of proper storage facility, various agricultural products when produced have
quite high moisture content and become liable to be affected with insect damage,
auto-oxidation and fungal contamination.
2. The value of Pakistani ruppee is decreasing as the value of dollar is increasing due to
which ingredients which are imported e.g. mineral, vitamins, limiting amino acids
(lysin, tryptophan, methionine) are very expensive.
3. Improper storage, transfer, grading, feed milling and mixing of feed ingredients also
affect the quality of feed.
4. Latest software for feed formulation (mill mix) is very expensive that’s why old
softwares are used
5. Less vision for growth
6. Limited knowledge of business requirements

8. Less technology based equipment usage.

12. Fluctuations in the raw material prices for producing animal feeds
13. Price of feed bags is increasing due to which farmers find alternatives.
14. Feed mills do not have research farms for the trail of feed manufactured by them to
check the outcome.
15. Feed mill which make mash feed are not prefered (because it cause respiratory
problems in birds) so crumbs & pellets are prefered.
16. Soya bean is good source of CP and foreign countries it is commonly used in feed but
in Pakistan it is not in good availability due to which many other ingredients are mixed
which maintain the CP.
