Poultry Project designed by NSPDT is very unique project, Government of Maharashtra and NSPDT are working together to implement the project in Maharashtra in tribal areas. Under this project we create women poultry producer company which is formed by women common interest groups and around 1000 members are partner in the company as share holders. This project provides livelihood for the women, the model works veyr simple every beneficiary is given infrastructure to rear birds and 500 one day old chicks to rear, all the necessary suppliments are provided and at the end of the cycle of 40 days the team does the buy back thus giving maximum benefits to the women producer company. Every women earns $ 1500 to $ 1800 annually.

India to start and run successful poultry enterprises.

setting the very best standards of professional excellence and wholesome

7. Context/History
PRADAN, a national level NGO started smallholder poultry farming (broiler chicken) in 1993 with
poor women from marginalised section at a tribal block “Kesla” in Hoshangabad district of MP
Women producers were collectivised around a cooperative society-registered in 2001 as “Kesla
Poultry Sahkarita Maryadit”
Each woman has a small poultry farm with rearing capacity of 400-800 birds built at her backyard.
She can manage this farm comfortably attending to the house-hold chores.
She can rear 5-6 batches of broiler chicken in a year and earns 40,000-60,000 annually. This is 100%
income enhancement in the context of a rural poor.
Cooperative model has been replicated in some of the poorest districts of MP, Jharkhand, Odisha
and Bengal over these years, recently NSPDT has started promoting 2,000 producers in Assam
Cooperatives are integrated at state level federation to facilitate techno-managerial supports,
backward and forward linkages, economy of scale etc.

8. Business Model (Smallholder Poultry)
Women from ST/SC families are promoted as poultry producers in contiguous villages, they are organised in
collective of 500-1,000 producers, which is registered as cooperative society/PC
Cooperative provides all the raw materials like chicks, feed, medicine, vaccines etc. and members are not
required to pay upfront
Cooperative provides technical services to members and organises for round the clock paravet service at village
Cooperative also provides marketing arrangement of ready birds- lifting from farmer’s doorstep
Producers are paid on the basis of Production efficiency (measured by Efficiency Index of broiler production)
calibrated in a reasonable way with the enterprise margin
Cooperative absorbs daily market fluctuations through in-built mechanism of risk mitigation by creating reserves
At year end if cooperative makes profit, part of it goes to producers as bonus, and another part goes for reserve
creation
Cooperative is managed by a team of experienced professional staff from Management and Veterinary
background supported by customised MIS software and Quality Management System (QMS)
Cooperatives are further integrated around state level federation- It runs feed plant, Parent farm and hatchery,
central purchasing and marketing cell etc. and thereby ensures supply of quality raw materials at best price and
better market access and realisation of ready birds
Margin of federation is shared within member cooperatives, which is reinvested for future growth like creating
backward integration facilities.
