Essay Sustainability of the Intersection in Ontario, Canada
The signalized intersection between Highway 12 and Pine Street in Ontario, Canada has been facing
some challenges in its current design. Therefore, future analysis and design of the intersection should
incorporate a suitable sustainability indicator to ensure that the intersection remains functional as a
long term solution. Perhaps the most important sustainability indicators for the intersection s future
analysis or evaluation should be traffic demand together with the future population (Litman 12). These
sustainability indicators will ensure that the intersection remains safe and performs at an optimum
level for the future based on how it is designed today.
The most significant challenge that the intersection has been facing is the ... Show more content on

This has led to loss of fuel, energy and time when vehicles, especially trucks, wait for their chance to
clear the intersection. This is because drivers have to keep their vehicle engines on unnecessarily at
the intersection. In addition, this challenge has led to increased travel costs due to reduced
accessibility of vehicles to their destinations in time. The vehicular delays are even high during peak
hours in this intersection. Therefore, future evaluation of the intersection should consider congestion
and mobility as the most important design challenge. However, in the evaluation of congestion
reducing design strategies, civil engineers should adopt sustainable mechanisms. For example, design
mechanisms that increase diversity in the transport system such as transit improvement will increase
sustainability. On the other hand, those designs that increase the population of traffic such as
expansion of the intersection may reduce sustainability. To increase sustainability, civil engineers
should consider reliability and transport expenditures in the new design. The current design of the
intersection is unsustainable due to improper timing of the traffic signals. There should be some
regulations to the current traffic signals to avoid long delays in traffic (Kockelman and Shabih 17).
Mobility barriers at the intersection can result to a slow response to emergencies. Therefore, the
timing of traffic lights at the

Student Athletes And High School Athletics
A 2016 study by the NCAA revealed that there are nearly eight million students who participate in
high school athletics in the United States, yet only 480,000 of them will compete at NCAA schools (
Probability of Competing Beyond High School ). Of that approximate 16% who become a student
athlete, an even smaller percent will graduate and become professional athletes. For example, data
from the 2015 NFL Draft demonstrates that there is less than a 2% chance of playing in the NFL.
During the 2015 Draft, there were 72,788 NCAA football participants, only 16,175 of those were draft
eligible for the 256 slots which equates to a 1.6% chance of being drafted to the NFL. According to
the NCAA, of the 256 NCAA players selected in the 2015 NFL draft 236 were from Division I FBS
institutions, 17 were from Division I FCS programs, two were from Division II programs, and only
one was from a Division III program. Student athletes from the power five conferences accounted for
for 200 of the 256 draft picks (SEC=54, ACC=47, Pac 12=39, Big Ten=35, Big 12=25) ( Probability
of Competing Beyond High School , 2016). With there being a small percentage of playing
professional sports after college, the importance of a college degree has become a priority for many
student athletes.
Due to the Student Right to Know act from 1990, all colleges and universities are required by NCAA
legislation and federal law to report student graduation rates ( Graduation Rates , 2016). The data

Should Music Be Censored Essay
Music is the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal
relationships to produce a composition having unity.Music provides a powerful form of expression
that at its most basic level helps to entertain while containing the power to cause revolutions. It is a
way for people to express themselves through beats, lyrics, pitches and ranges. Imagine owning a
music store, and a new album about police brutality is brought to your store for you to sell. An
undercover cop came in and bought the album, and told you that if you didn t take the albums off the
shelves you would be arrested and your store would be shut down. There are debates today on whether
the government should censor the music that we listen to.Some believe it has a negative effect on the
listeners and cause them to become the lyrics. Since music is a form of expression, censoring the
music would be a violation of our rights. While many believe censorship to be a necessity in certain
contexts, the idea of censorship is at fault in its attempt to control and stop the advance knowledge of
the world today. There is fear of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Far can Individuals Influence an Orgnization s Culture
Drawing on scholarly articles and theories discussed throughout the module, critically examine how
far individuals can influence an organisation s culture
In the modern, world the bonds of organizations share our lives: from being born in a hospital, entered
into the registry of birth, marriages and deaths which tracks the entire populace and changes in it.
Almost every aspect of our everyday life and, indeed, our deaths will be shared by organization of one
kind or another. (Clegg. et al, 2011 p.6). Humanity is the linchpin of any establishment, which itself
was made for human beings. Range of organizational culture, which they bring to the organization is
very wide, it is determined by the uniqueness of each person. Genetic base is unique to each
individual, and explains some of the differences of people. Individuals who fall into the cycle of
different environments and situations can change their individual characteristics. One of the definition
of organizational culture is that Organization culture a set of shared, often implicit assumptions,
beliefs, value, and sense making procedures that influences and guides the behavior and thinking of
organizational members, and is in turn continuously enacted and reinforced or changed by the
behaviour of organizational member (Martin and Fellenz, 2010 p.481). The following essay will
evaluate that how far individuals can determine an organization s culture by using theories, which will
serve to demonstrate

The Great Flood Impact On The Economy
Savannah throughout June and July 1840 was highly characterized by the economy, political life,
agriculture, and new advances in the practicing of medication. Not to say that only one product play a
role in the economy, but during this period, cotton was, figuratively, the ruler of Georgia. It fueled the
growth and expansion of the state s economy. However, with cotton being the most desirable cash
crop at the time, the lack of diversity in the economic lifeline did not help when disaster struck and
that was the only thing the city had to fall back on. The Great Flood had a devastating impact on the
economy in early June. It led to an economic depreciation due to all of the property and crop damage.
With the heavy rainfall that began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cities of Macon and Savannah were good teammates in 1840. Cotton was shipped from Macon
and made its way along the Ocmulgee River using a steamboat to then take a small trip north in the
Ocean to Savannah s large port. With Savannah being the largest city in the state, the construction of
the Central of Georgia Railway was encouraged. This railway would connect the two cities, Macon
and Savannah, and greatly help to increase the speed of the transportation of cotton and recourses
from inland to sea. This would also put Savannah more on the map when discussing important
worldwide ports. One thing was made clear in the life of politics and that was that white men wanted
to keep the institution of slavery alive. Galvanizing the establishment of slavery was a judicial system
that deprived African Americans the same or any legal rights enjoyed by Caucasian Americans. All of
the northern states had outlawed slavery back in 1820, but the rise of cotton made the enormous
profits of the slave system irresistible to most white southerners. Relations regarding were further
reinforced by the universal racial bond among white Georgian men. Sharing the intolerance that
slaveholders held against African Americans, non slaveholding whites believed that the abolition of
slavery would annihilate their own economic prospects and bring devastation

A Case Of A Ransom
In morning of December 26, 1996 around 5:00 AM Patsy Ramsey woke up in her Boulder Colorado
residence to discover a ransom be aware on her kitchen staircase. The notice was addressed to her
husband saying that their daughter six year old JonBenet Ramsey had been kidnapped. The abductors
wrote on the papers step by step what they want them to do demanded a value of $118,000 for
JonBenet to be returned home safe and unharmed which was really weird because it is almost exactly
equal to the bonus that Patsy s husband John Ramsey had just lately got. When Patsy went to
JonBenet s room and found out that she was not there Patsy and John reacted as quickly as possible
then she and John had called the police to file JonBenet missing at 5:25 AM and telling the operator
the ransom be aware s risk that JonBenet could be killed if the police have been notified. In keeping
with the ransom observe and carefulness the abductors could be calling John Ramsey to offer him
advice to give the ransom cash which he and Patsy had been already busy on gathering when the
police arrived to their house. That decision by no means came. Then, police immediately suspected
that John and Patsy have been somehow concerned in their daughter s disappearance. From the second

Vinyl Synthesis Essay
The patterns of printed vinyl are printed using a paper top coat put directly on a thin vinyl surface and
then covered with several layers of clear vinyl or urethane to create a protective wear layer. This type
of vinyl is a more affordable option compared to inlaid vinyl but it is less durable. The patterns of
inlaid vinyl floors are pass through a process that put tiny vinyl granules on the backing, forcing them
up to the wear surface. This creates heavier and extremely durable floor. This is because vinyl is
applied throughout the entire thickness of the flooring. Vinyl is available in a few different styles,
including sheet vinyl, solid vinyl tiles, and luxury vinyl tiles. Sheet vinyl generally comes in 6 or 12

Ignatius Letter To The Philadelphians Analysis
The letter to the Philadelphians follows next and like the first few letters continues to emphasise the
role of the bishop. I believe even if Ignatius was not a Bishop himself he would still stress the
importance of the bishop in the Church. To Ignatius the bishop is a sacred and important role in
keeping order and spreading the word throughout the Church. In the previous letters Ignatius says that
through the bishop you will find unity in the Church, to the Philadelphians he says through the bishop
you will protect yourselves from schism and heresy in the Church. It is also in this letter that Ignatius
warns specifically to not listen to the Jews. This comportment towards the Jews was common in early
Christianity and can be seen throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After talking about the resurrection of Christ, Ignatius instructs the Smyrnaeans to beware of the
heretics and not to speak or even meet with them if possible. He says the only thing they can do for
them is to pray for their repentance, even though it will be difficult for them. Only Christ has the
power to redeem the heretics and save them ultimately from themselves. This message to the
Smyrnaeans is a very powerful message to Christianity as a whole and should be at the center piece
for how a Christian is to act. With any religion or belief you will have those who are deemed heretics
in the eyes of the believer. The negative way to deal with the heretics is to confront them with anger
and harm but the positive way is really not to confront them at all. Instead of fighting fire with fire or
Word against word, as a Christian the only thing you can do is leave it in God s hands. This idea is just
as powerful in 100AD as it is in 2016AD. The letter to the Smyrnaeans goes on to reiterate the
message of honoring the Bishop and not doing anything within the Church without the Bishop.
Ignatius says about honoring the Bishop, He who honours the bishop has been honoured by God; he
who does anything without the knowledge of the bishop, does [in reality] serve the devil.

Causes And Solutions Of Food Insecurity
INTRODUCTION
This report will explore the impacts, causes and solutions of food insecurity and other contextual
factors relating to Chad s economic and financial crisis.
STATEMENT OF FINDINGS
Food security exists when everyone in the population has access to enough nutritious food to live an
active and health life. In Chad there is no food security, because not everyone has enough food to eat.
In fact, according to World Food Program 25 34.9% of Chad is undernourished.
Chad is Africa s 5th largest nation, known for its sacred Chad Lake. It has seven neighbouring
countries whom are Sudan, Niger, Libya, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria and Darfur.
Altogether they are all resided in North East Africa.
Currently, Chad has 14 million populations and 14.28 deaths occur in every 1000 people. Sadly, Chad
has the 6th highest death rate in the world. The life expectancy for females is only 52.7 years and the
male life expectancy is 50.8 years. In comparison to Germany, Chad s longevity statistics has a
tremendous differ in the life expectancy, incomes and health care by at least 48%.
At the moment, Chad s citizens have a low income, a loss of education and an alarming lack of health
care. According to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), only 40.2% of the population can read and
write. In addition, not only do Chad lack education, but only 87.9% have access to sanitation facilities
and there is only 36% school enrolment within the country. Some major contextual

Myrlie Evers Williams is known as the wife of civil rights activist Medgar Evers, who was murdered
in 1963. After his death, a spark ignited within her that led to a successful career and became a well
known activist in her own right. Myrlie Evers was born Myrlie Louise Beasley on March 17, 1933 in
the segregated neighborhood of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Mrs. Evers attended Alcorn A M College,
where she ended up meeting and marrying her late husband Medgar Evers in 1951. In 1955 her
husband became field secretary for the NAACP in Mississippi, whoever Myrlie feared his new job
would rattle white supremacists that would lead to violent acts against their family. However, she
stood by Medgars side and worked with him on many issues that involved racial segregation in school,

a gunshot wound to his back. What transpired that night changed her life forever.
Evers Williams embarked on her own journey and that of her late husband to fight for racial equality
and justice. After the court s two failed attempts, to convict Medgars killer, Byron De La Beckwith,
she moved her family to California. She would later attend Pomona College and received her degree
in Sociology. Between 1967 1970, she worked for Claremont College as the Director of Planning
Educational Opportunity and co wrote her first book, For Us, the Living. In 1975 she helped develop

Persuasive Authority Is Dependent On The Case And Evidence
Persuasive Authority is dependent on the case and evidence that is presented to the courts. This could
come in the form of comparisons of the cases, even though both belong to different hierarchies, and
how the evidence is presented and if there stands to be a justifiable reasoning for including persuasive
authority. In order for the case to be convincing, the case must be identical. Over a period of time, the
strength of persuasive authority may change in light of new evidence in various jurisdictions, or even
changes in precedents through legislation, over ruling a previous decision or even a superior court
reversing their own previous case. To further make a persuasive authority more compelling, it must
attempt to show strength through the following; Level of court where the decision was cast from.
Status this means the status of the judge that made the previous decision. Decision was or was not
reversed if the persuasive case was reversed or had a prior reversal, it becomes less persuasive in a
court of law. Strong dissenting judgement. The fact presented are distinguishing. HOW BINDING
AUTHORITY MAY NOT BE FOLLOWED In practise binding authority may not be used within the
cases. In terms of seeking out a just sentence on a case, some may decide that using, with a substantial
cause, a persuasive authority may be used. This depends on the strengths of the persuasive argument,
as statement in a previous paragraph. If, for example there isn t enough

Working At The Country Club
During my sophomore year of high school, one of my teachers approached me and asked if I was
interested in a job for the summer at the country of a local country club. While I was nervous at first, I
accepted the job, and have now completed two successful summers there. The experience of having a
summer job taught me many things; and as I continued to take on more and more responsibilities over
the summer, I learned even more about how to be responsible at all times and to empathize with
someone in order to understand their perspective and to help improve their experience. One of the
many responsibilities of my job was to help prepare billing statements for the members of the country
club. This taught me to be responsible at all times, as even the slightest mistake could result in a
member being overcharged or undercharged which could lead to a number of other problems for both
the member and the club. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

conduct yourself in all settings leaves an impression upon people, which was a valuable lesson in
developing my character. In conclusion, working at the country club taught me a number of things
which will come in handy as I continue maturing into adulthood. Being a responsible, well rounded

Chapter two is when Thomas Jefferson held a dinner to discuss the country s issue on debt and to pick
a new capital. In order to make sure the then new country stays alive, the leaders had to make choices
that were political. Jefferson s dinner was held for Hamilton and Madison so that the two could settle
their disagreements. Their disagreements were that Hamilton had a financial plan that reached
stalemate and Madison was the opposing faction. The politicians were able to reach an agreement of
Madison not dissuading his party members from not voting for Hamilton s plan, and Hamilton agreed
to locate the new capital on the Potomac River. What persuaded Jefferson to hold this dinner was
Hamilton s melodramatics. Hamilton was so distressed and upset over the fact that his financial plan
wasn t going anywhere that he was certain country wouldn t survive without his plan. Jefferson did
not want the country to fail so early, hence the dinner. Both bills passed with almost similar numbers
that people were convinced a secret meeting took place. Eventually, Jefferson admitted that this dinner
was the worst mistake of his political life, since he was afraid it could tarnish his future. Although
Jefferson believed this was a big mistake, this central event of the early republic was political and at

In A Barbie World! A culture that is saturated by consumerism can be referred to as a consumer
culture. Barbie can be used as a tool for consumer culture because she is perceived to be the perfect

car, and even a dream closet. There are life size Barbies bouncing around in T.V. and print media ads
that personify this image. Barbie produces a systematic reproduction of consistency; she doesn t

Another example of this is the Cinco de Mayo Barbie. Her traditional attire is the main attraction and
effectively makes her represent Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Another point made earlier is the variety
of items that Barbie has. For example there are several different vehicles that are Barbie items
(pictures below). The appeal of these different vehicles to young consumers is imbedded in the need to
play pretend . Also, children often mimic their parents or older siblings, not to mention society s
images of popular vehicles. The idea here is to provide many options for a consumer, this way there is
at least one item that every consumer can be attracted to. Also it is important to note that all the
vehicles, whether child size or Barbie size, are all a variation of the color pink. The color connotes
femininity and the social gender association is with females. So although there is a choice on types of
products the color choice is limited. According to about.com and Barbie.everythinggirl.com every
second two Barbies are sold somewhere in the world. The popularity of the doll provides us with some
insight to Barbie consumers. They are willing to conform to ideas of what is socially acceptable for
colors of toys specifically for girls; and by willing I mean either not prompted to voice change or not

Male Victims Of Female Victims
VICTIM BLAMING As stated above, one reason males being raped by females is not commonly
known is because victims blame themselves. Male victims of rape, like female victims, are likely to be
blamed by others for their own rape (Anderson, 2004). When victims blame themselves multiple
questions run through their mind to where in the end they blame themselves for the action occurring
and not want to tell anyone due to fear of embarrassment. Due to stereotypes, multiple studies have
shown that male victims of rape are being blame for their assault. Male victims tend to be blamed
more than female victims on behavior blame measures, due to societal stereotypes that a man should
be able to defend for themselves (Davies and Rogers, 2006). However, women are not expected to be
able to defend for themselves. While male victims are held responsible for the rape on account of their
behavior during the attack, female victims are attributed more blame on account of their internal
characteristics (Doherty and Anderson, 2004). Stating that males are blamed for not being masculine
enough to fight off their attacker and females are blamed for putting themselves in that situation when
they should have been safer. The fact that males can be victims of rape challenges may beliefs about
men s masculinity. Males that identify as homosexual are judged to be more at fault than males that

Thoughts are just electrochemical reactions to Stimuli. When we experience anything, we can react to

Beltane Research Paper
Beltane is the season on the ancient Celtic calendar that marks the beginning of the light half of the
year. The season comes between May 1 and June 21. During this season, there is Gaelic festival,
Samhain that marks the beginning of the winter and the end of the harvest season. Samhain represents
another powerful moment for future divining, as there is a thin barrier between the spirit and reality
worlds. According to the Celtic people, Beltane marks the time of sacred alchemical marriage between
god Bael, their solar father and goddess Danu, their earth mother. Moreover, the marriage and the
intercourse of Bael, the solar father and Danu the earth mother is symbolized by the performance of
the Maypole dance during this season. Therefore, we celebrate our earthly parents and their
intercourse that created us during this time of the year. This is a special moment to celebrate fertility
and mating all over the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a season similar to Samhain as the doorways between worlds are wide open. Moreover,
children conceived during orgiastic rituals on Beltane were believed to have the divine energies of the
earthly parents. These children were seen to have magical and special abilities. The archetypes of Bael
and Danu are represented in Beltane rituals by always incorporating the crowning of a May Queen and
May King. Therefore, this season marks the most favorable moment for engagements and marriages.
Symbols and Energies for the Season of Beltane Beltane is a season that is associated with a number
of symbols and energies such as the fire, southeast direction and the summer season. The serpent and a
rabbit, Hawthorne plant, red and white colors and the kingdom of the fire and the salamanders, also
symbolize the season. Besides, the season is associated with the dark or lunar stage, midday or high

Abortion Medical Statistics
The medical statistics can be very supportive to the ban of the abortion. There are several researches
that have clearly shown that there is a close relationship between the breast cancers and the abortion.
The women, who have undergone the process of abortion, are highly viable for the breast cancers.
There is another issue for such mothers. Most of the mothers, who have gone the process of abortion,
are not in a position to have children in the rest of their life. This can be considered as a harmful
situation to the family as well as to the society. The society needs the people to maintain the process of
social; system but it is not possible when there is not enough people to carry out all these roles and
responsibilities of the society.

Virginia Woolf s Orlando Is A Work That Bends The Rules...
Virginia Woolf s Orlando is a work that bends the rules in multiple ways. It plays with the idea of
biographies, it questions the nature of fiction writing, it incorporates humor in bizarre ways. And on
top of all that it brings into view certain controversial topics, and certain prejudices of Woolf s time.
The two prejudices this paper will be focusing on are homophobia and sexism. By looking at the
character of Orlando and examining his/her relationships, romantic feelings, and place in society, we
can clearly see Woolf writing back against society s prejudices and fears of the 1920s. In a society of
gender roles and sexuality closely monitored and defined, Woolf creates something unexpected,
unacceptable (in some people s eyes), and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Woolf never blatantly states that any of the characters in Orlando are homosexual. Instead she uses
almost mischievous undertones to hint the fact to her readers. This can be found right at the beginning
of the novel, when Orlando meets Sasha. Orlando is unable to tell whether Sasha is a man or a
woman, for her height and her clothes make her appear androgynous. Orlando is attracted to Sasha as
an individual, entirely separate from the fact about her gender (Kao, 2). One of the main arguments of
the homosexual movement is to see people as people, not as men and women. An individual can love
whoever he/she wants no matter what their sex. It is not about a person s gender, it is about the person
him/herself. And though our narrator later does tell us that Orlando was ready to tear his hair with
vexation that the person was of his own sex..., we don t forget those mischievous undertones Woolf
threw at us upon their first meeting (Woolf, 17). Right off the bat, Woolf is introducing us to a
character who is embracing this idea of individualistic love, and hinting at relationships that may not
be heterosexual. Woolf is fighting against the idea of being attracted to a person because of their sex,
and welcoming the idea of being attracted to someone as an individual.
We can also see homosexual undertones in the relationship between Orlando and the Archduchess

The And Background Of Nightingale
One could argue, that the evolution of nursing began with Florence Nightingale. She has been
awarded the title of the founder of modern day nursing, and many of the practices she implemented in
an effort to improve patient care, has molded nursing practice into what is it today. The purpose of this
paper is to summarize the credentials and background of Nightingale, review her environmental
adaptation theory, and identify sources of her theory. We will also state the major concepts/definitions
of the theory as well as provide major assumptions of said theory. Credentials and Background of
Florence Nightingale When you think of nursing, Florence Nightingale is the name that gets brought

Cherry and Jacob state that Nightingale introduced principles of asepsis and infection control, a
system for transcribing physician s orders, and a procedure to maintain patient records (Cherry Jacob,
2014, p. 8). Florence Nightingale also established the first nursing school in 1860 at the St. Thomas
Hospital of London (Cherry Jacob, 2014). Not only is Nightingale the founder of professional nursing,
she is also recognized for contributing to nursing research, involvement in political activism, and for
her establishment to provide formal nursing education to pursing nurses (Cherry Jacob, 2014).
Nightingale s Environmental Adaptation Theory Florence Nightingale is very well known for
transforming nursing in general as we know it. She viewed nursing as an art and educated nurses the
proper practice of professional nursing. Her theory of practice focused on environmental adaptation
that served as the foundation for promoting health (Cherry Jacob, 2014, p. 80). Nightingale believed
that a patient s health and healing process was greatly affected by their surrounding environment. She
described that ventilation, warmth, noise, diet, light, chattering hopes, and cleanliness were the
standards of her theory (Cherry Jacob, 2014, p. 81). Nightingale stated, keeping the

The American Dream By Mike Keefe
The American dream is the belief that anyone that lives or that comes to America has the chance to be
rich if they work hard enough. However American dream an unattainable dream because it never
existed. Mike Keefe an American editorial cartoonist of American Pipe Dream uses numerous
techniques to convey the message that the American dream is an optical illusion. In reality most
American live with student loans that they cannot pay because they of under employment, which
causes them credit card debt. Techniques such as the position of people and objects, race and facial
expression are used to show the American dream is mirage.
America is known as the land of freedom and opportunity. A country where a person s background
race, religion and gender does not affect a person s dream. In whatever way this American dream is
dead in fact it never existed. The text at the left corner has a precise description of what the American
dream truly is, The American pipe dream with attached mirage. Americans have to get an overpriced
education, have huge school loans, get underpaying jobs, which will cause them to have credit card
debt, which will take their rest of their life to fix. This means they can not buy house, cars or anything
because in America a person s credit score determines whether that person will get anything in life.
Even with all of these obstacles Americans are told to achieve a dream that is an illusion created by
the fading people that belief that the future

Evolution and The Island of Doctor Moreau
There are a lot of misconceptions about Darwin s theory of evolution. One of the biggest is that he
called the theory by that name. Albrecht von Haller used the word evolution in 1744 to mean to unroll,
so the word was around in Darwin s time, but Darwin never used it in the sense we use it today. It was
added later by others, including Herbert Spencer, who is responsible for the theory we call Social
Darwinism. This theory is misnamed; it is not based on Darwin s work, but Spencer s.
Darwin did not come up with his theory out of nowhere. Like anyone else who has made discoveries,
he was influenced by others. For quite a long time before Darwin, people didn t look beyond the
Biblical creation story. Such things as fossils, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
63) And finally we get to Charles Darwin himself. As a young man from an elite and wealthy family,
Charles s possible career choices were limited: there weren t many professions respectable enough. He
started off studying medicine but couldn t stand to see blood. Charles earned a degree in theology, but
his real interest, which he pursued outside the classroom, was natural studies. For three years as an
undergraduate he ...mixed with some of the leading scientists of his day, at a level far more intimate
than would be possible for an undergraduate today. (Ruse, p. 33)
Through his connections Darwin eventually joined the H.M.S. Beagle on a navigational trip around
the world. There is some debate as to whether Darwin was the official ship s naturalist; by some
accounts he was only a passenger, because he lacked a degree in the natural sciences. At the time of
his departure, Charles was also creationist, meaning that he held to the Biblical view of the origins of
the earth and its creatures. He spent five years traveling on the Beagle, collecting specimens of things
he encountered in his travels. He never adapted to sea travel, and was sick for most of the time he was
on the ship; when his travels were over, he settled down permanently.
When he first returned, Darwin considered himself to be a geologist, (not a biologist), (Ruse, p. 34).

The Hours Theme
Michael Cunningham s The Hours tells the story of three women, each from different eras of society,
yet connected through the internal conflicts which they face. Laura Brown, one of the novel s three
protagonists, lives the white middle class American dream. However, throughout the novel her mental
health begins to deteriorate due to the oppressive lifestyle which she feels society has forced upon her.
The Virginia Woolf portrayed by Cunningham, was in fact historically accurate to the original Virginia
Woolf. Wolf struggled with mental illness throughout her lifetime and the idea of breaking the mold of
traditional women s roles. Unlike Laura Brown and Virginia Woolf, Clarissa Vaughn enjoys all of the
freedoms which the late twentieth century allows, but is still left questioning if her life of a
conventional wife and mother is lacking something. Character, to some extent is determined by
destiny, however, when society places limitations on an individual s free will, it will always create a
desire to break away from the mold. Above all other characters in The Hours , Laura Brown
challenges her destiny like no other. The post war society of America in the 1950s clearly defined the
roles in which women were expected to fill. Unlike most of the women which share her similar
suburban lifestyle, Laura feels dissatisfied with her life consisting of solely marriage and motherhood.
Throughout the course of the novel, Laura searches for an escape from this traditional way of

Sn1 Reaction Lab Report
SN1 reactions only occur with certain reagents under very specific conditions. These reactions have an
intermediate and occur in two distinct steps. The first step is the formation of the carbocation once the
leaving group departs from the molecule. The type of leaving group is vital in determining if an SN1
reaction will occur. In general, the efficiency of the leaving group increases as the size of the halide
ion increases. However, p Toluensulfonate is the most effective and reactive leaving group. As this
step forms a carbocation, it is important to note that the type of carbocation that will form. SN1
reactions will not occur if the intermediate is not stable. Therefore, the degree of substitution of the
leaving group, and consequently the carbocation, is vital. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Correspondingly, primary alkyl halides are the least likely to react. Additionally, the solvent has the
ability to stabilize the carbocation. A polar protic solvent is favored as it will form hydrogen bonds to
further stabilize the carbocation intermediate. Overall, SN1 reactions are widely dependent on the
formation of a stable carbocation intermediate. Since SN1 reactions are dependent on the formation of
the carbocation, and that step occurs separately from the nucleophilic addition, the rate of the reaction
is not typically affected by the nature or concentration of the nucleophile. The mechanism of an SN1
reaction is consistent. First, the leaving group leaves forming the carbocation. The intermediate
carbocation is planar and achiral. The nucleophile is then free to attack from either side of the
carbocation, which forms the substituted product in either a racemic mixture or with some form of

When Pigs Fly
About 20 years ago, I picked up a friend for the airport. She told me that she had a present from her
and another mutual friend. It was the CD (remember those???) of the musical When Pigs Fly. For the
next hour I remained speechless as I listened to one hysterically funny track after another. It began a
TRUE love affair with the musical. The concept of the revue, by Mark Waldrop and the late Howard
Crabtree (1955 1996), is that Howard stages a musical. As he struggles to do so, dealing with the large
egos of performers or scenery gone wrong, he hears the words of his high school guidance counselor,
Miss Roundhole, sarcastically respond to his ambitions and dreams by saying, Sure I can see it...When

Melody Barn. The Artistic Director, Carole Ann Knipple (with the K pronounced) is tired of never

Ebony Case Summary
The legal system has been proved ineffective in achieving justice in Ebony s case, where the
perpetrators of her death have been sentenced to inadequate time and in turn has undermined the
severity of the case. Government agencies have consistently failed to address pressing issues
pertaining to the family when help was clearly needed and have been incompetent in providing
assistance in countless instances, it is believed that Ebony s death could have been preventable if they
had intervened. Despite the ineffectiveness of the legal system in this case, her death served as a
catalyst for the NSW government initiating a Special Commission of Inquiry into Child Protection
Services and for legal reforms to the child protection system. This was ... Show more content on

The recommendations of the inquiry were directly aimed at the failings identified in Mr Barbour s
report. In March 2009, the NSW Government responded to the inquiry by releasing a plan of reform
for child protection. Keep them Safe, a five year plan designed by the government, contemplates
fundamental changes to the way in which child protection services are delivered in NSW. The
cornerstone of the changes is to make child protection a shared responsibility . All relevant
government agencies will have prescribed responsibilities for ensuring the wellbeing of children. In
line with this the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 had been amended to
permit the exchange of information relating to the safety and welfare of a child. The expanded role of
a range of government agencies have the potential of making these agencies more responsive to the
needs of children at the local level, and of ensuring that more families receive timely and appropriate
support. In total, the inquiry has made 111 recommendations, ultimately forming the basis of a major
overhaul of the child protection system and has lead to a vastly changed child protection system in
NSW. Through the recognition of failures within Ebony s case, the legal system and government has
effectively amended, improved and introduced legislature and plans to ensure the protection and well
being of

Essay on Biography of Edward Kennedy Ellington
Biography of Edward Kennedy Ellington I m just an up and coming musician struggling to find
another new note. Duke Ellington Edward Kennedy Ellington was born April 29th 1899 in
Washington, DC. From an early age, Ellington was instilled with solid, conservative morals. He was
taught to pride himself and his family and to achieve to the utmost of his dreams. At such a crucial
time in the history of the African American, there was a struggle to be accepted and to fit into the
American culture that so far had not embraced them. This held true for Ellington s family. As
Ellington said of his father, he always acted as though he had money, whether he had it or not. [1] This
sentiment and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only was Ellington raised in a refined and proper manner, he was also exposed to luxuries
unimaginable to most lower class black families of the time. They would receive china and silverware,
clothes and anything else naturally only gently used. If it were not for this, it would probably be
impossible for the Ellington s to own a piano, let alone two of them! Ellington s family was part of a
social group whose morals were steadfastly Victorian and often puritanical in outlook...Ellington was
encouraged to become an achiever, and was taught pride in his race and a duty to represent it well. [3]
The attitude and confidence that his family possessed is what led Ellington on the path that he took.
The steadfast belief and faith that his family had in him is what encouraged Ellington to continue on
and to persevere in life. Piano lessons did not go well in Ellington s early life. He was uninterested in
the hobby and as he said, I missed more lessons than I took...After all, baseball, football, track and
athletics were what real he men were identified with .[4] It was not until several years later, while
working in a hotel down at the Jersey shore that someone suggested Ellington stop in Philadelphia on
the way home to hear a pianist by the name of Harvey Brooks. Brooks was around the same age as
Ellington and seeing another pianist

How To Throw A Curveball Research Paper
RPS stands for revolutions per second. It measures the rotations per second of a pitched ball. A good
breaking ball at least requires 19 RPS. Learning to throw a curveball can be confusing at first; but as
you learn and improve, it gets easier. Teamwork and motivation is an essential element in order to
succeed. As a pitcher, it sometimes feels like its one versus nine. Even when the team and yourself
make errors, you have to stay calm and relaxed. The cheering and yelling of the other team are
distracting, but you have to stay strong when pitching. Being relaxed is key to throwing. If you try to
throw a curveball tensed, it doesn t go well. To throw a curveball, you need to have a correct grip, an
accurate release point, and you need to know when to throw a curveball. ... Show more content on

The seams of the softball should be parallel and vertical. If you re a right handed thrower, place your
right middle finger on the right seam, and your index finger on the other seam. If you don t have a
correct or strong grip, there will not be as much spin on the ball. The more spin on the ball, the better.
A ball will not travel far if it has a lot of spin after it has been hit. More spin equals more break. If you
have enough spin on the ball, the seams will leave blisters on your fingertips.
The release point and wrist snap determine if the ball will cut at the right time and if the ball will have
a rotation. You release the ball at your right hip if you re right handed, and your hand will end at the
left hip. Coaches usually say shoot the hip. That means after the ball has left your hands. Your index
and middle finger should be at your left hip. Your elbow needs to be tucked to your side. If your elbow
is out, the ball will gradually cut through the air instead of a sharp cut. If you re a right handed pitcher,

Marine Mammal Bycatch Research Papers
Acoustic Pingers on Nets in order to reduce Marine Mammal Bycatch
A topic that is known for its controversy is the use of acoustic pingers on fishing nets in an attempt to
reduce marine mammal bycatch. While this idea seems appealing and has its potential benefits, there
are also drawbacks to the use of this kind of device as well. When a device such as the acoustic pinger
is invented, it is important to consider the various types of impacts it will have, especially in terms of
marine mammal species conservation.
The desired goal of installation of acoustic pingers on fishing nets is to notably reduce the amount of
marine mammal bycatch in fishing nets. While this is the immediate effect of the acoustic pingers,
potential long term effects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The purpose of these devices is to reduce such bycatch, but with every tool there are pros and cons,
positive and negative effects. When an acoustic pinger is put to use, all of these effects must be
considered too when a marine mammal is exposed to the noise emitted by an acoustic pinger: potential
for habituation, the dinner bell effect , changes in swimming behaviors and respiration rates, potential
for change in echolocation behaviors, and the ideal frequency the pinger must have to create
avoidance from fishery nets. Change in behaviors of fish not targeted by the acoustic pingers should
still be taken into account as well upon use of these pingers. In addition, issues can lie within how the
acoustic pinger is handled by fishermen: inefficient usage and the potential for equipment failure,
along with varying degrees of willingness to use such a device on fishing trips can greatly impact the
reduction rates of marine mammal bycatch, and even create the risk of further increasing bycatch rates
when the goal was to lower them in the first place. Thus, while acoustic pingers were built with good
intentions at conserving marine mammal species in attempt to reduce their rates as bycatch in
fisherman nets, careful consideration must occur when putting one of these devices into actual use,
including analysis of impacts from the perspectives of the target marine mammal species, the non
targeted nearby fish species, and the fishermen running the fishing nets. The conclusion can be drawn
that if acoustic pingers are put into use, they must be completely be put into use as a full and not
partial set of pingers on the net, high maintenance must be kept up with to lower the chance of
equipment failure, and the pingers must be specialized for certain marine mammal species in order to
produce optimal results of reduction of marine mammal bycatch. It seems that the

  • 2. Essay Sustainability of the Intersection in Ontario, Canada The signalized intersection between Highway 12 and Pine Street in Ontario, Canada has been facing some challenges in its current design. Therefore, future analysis and design of the intersection should incorporate a suitable sustainability indicator to ensure that the intersection remains functional as a long term solution. Perhaps the most important sustainability indicators for the intersection s future analysis or evaluation should be traffic demand together with the future population (Litman 12). These sustainability indicators will ensure that the intersection remains safe and performs at an optimum level for the future based on how it is designed today. The most significant challenge that the intersection has been facing is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has led to loss of fuel, energy and time when vehicles, especially trucks, wait for their chance to clear the intersection. This is because drivers have to keep their vehicle engines on unnecessarily at the intersection. In addition, this challenge has led to increased travel costs due to reduced accessibility of vehicles to their destinations in time. The vehicular delays are even high during peak hours in this intersection. Therefore, future evaluation of the intersection should consider congestion and mobility as the most important design challenge. However, in the evaluation of congestion reducing design strategies, civil engineers should adopt sustainable mechanisms. For example, design mechanisms that increase diversity in the transport system such as transit improvement will increase sustainability. On the other hand, those designs that increase the population of traffic such as expansion of the intersection may reduce sustainability. To increase sustainability, civil engineers should consider reliability and transport expenditures in the new design. The current design of the intersection is unsustainable due to improper timing of the traffic signals. There should be some regulations to the current traffic signals to avoid long delays in traffic (Kockelman and Shabih 17). Mobility barriers at the intersection can result to a slow response to emergencies. Therefore, the timing of traffic lights at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Student Athletes And High School Athletics A 2016 study by the NCAA revealed that there are nearly eight million students who participate in high school athletics in the United States, yet only 480,000 of them will compete at NCAA schools ( Probability of Competing Beyond High School ). Of that approximate 16% who become a student athlete, an even smaller percent will graduate and become professional athletes. For example, data from the 2015 NFL Draft demonstrates that there is less than a 2% chance of playing in the NFL. During the 2015 Draft, there were 72,788 NCAA football participants, only 16,175 of those were draft eligible for the 256 slots which equates to a 1.6% chance of being drafted to the NFL. According to the NCAA, of the 256 NCAA players selected in the 2015 NFL draft 236 were from Division I FBS institutions, 17 were from Division I FCS programs, two were from Division II programs, and only one was from a Division III program. Student athletes from the power five conferences accounted for for 200 of the 256 draft picks (SEC=54, ACC=47, Pac 12=39, Big Ten=35, Big 12=25) ( Probability of Competing Beyond High School , 2016). With there being a small percentage of playing professional sports after college, the importance of a college degree has become a priority for many student athletes. Due to the Student Right to Know act from 1990, all colleges and universities are required by NCAA legislation and federal law to report student graduation rates ( Graduation Rates , 2016). The data collected is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Should Music Be Censored Essay Music is the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity.Music provides a powerful form of expression that at its most basic level helps to entertain while containing the power to cause revolutions. It is a way for people to express themselves through beats, lyrics, pitches and ranges. Imagine owning a music store, and a new album about police brutality is brought to your store for you to sell. An undercover cop came in and bought the album, and told you that if you didn t take the albums off the shelves you would be arrested and your store would be shut down. There are debates today on whether the government should censor the music that we listen to.Some believe it has a negative effect on the listeners and cause them to become the lyrics. Since music is a form of expression, censoring the music would be a violation of our rights. While many believe censorship to be a necessity in certain contexts, the idea of censorship is at fault in its attempt to control and stop the advance knowledge of the world today. There is fear of ... How Far can Individuals Influence an Orgnization s Culture Drawing on scholarly articles and theories discussed throughout the module, critically examine how far individuals can influence an organisation s culture In the modern, world the bonds of organizations share our lives: from being born in a hospital, entered into the registry of birth, marriages and deaths which tracks the entire populace and changes in it. Almost every aspect of our everyday life and, indeed, our deaths will be shared by organization of one kind or another. (Clegg. et al, 2011 p.6). Humanity is the linchpin of any establishment, which itself was made for human beings. Range of organizational culture, which they bring to the organization is very wide, it is determined by the uniqueness of each person. Genetic base is unique to each individual, and explains some of the differences of people. Individuals who fall into the cycle of different environments and situations can change their individual characteristics. One of the definition of organizational culture is that Organization culture a set of shared, often implicit assumptions, beliefs, value, and sense making procedures that influences and guides the behavior and thinking of organizational members, and is in turn continuously enacted and reinforced or changed by the behaviour of organizational member (Martin and Fellenz, 2010 p.481). • 6. The Great Flood Impact On The Economy Savannah throughout June and July 1840 was highly characterized by the economy, political life, agriculture, and new advances in the practicing of medication. Not to say that only one product play a role in the economy, but during this period, cotton was, figuratively, the ruler of Georgia. It fueled the growth and expansion of the state s economy. However, with cotton being the most desirable cash crop at the time, the lack of diversity in the economic lifeline did not help when disaster struck and that was the only thing the city had to fall back on. The Great Flood had a devastating impact on the economy in early June. It led to an economic depreciation due to all of the property and crop damage. With the heavy rainfall that began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cities of Macon and Savannah were good teammates in 1840. Cotton was shipped from Macon and made its way along the Ocmulgee River using a steamboat to then take a small trip north in the Ocean to Savannah s large port. With Savannah being the largest city in the state, the construction of the Central of Georgia Railway was encouraged. This railway would connect the two cities, Macon and Savannah, and greatly help to increase the speed of the transportation of cotton and recourses from inland to sea. This would also put Savannah more on the map when discussing important worldwide ports. One thing was made clear in the life of politics and that was that white men wanted to keep the institution of slavery alive. Galvanizing the establishment of slavery was a judicial system that deprived African Americans the same or any legal rights enjoyed by Caucasian Americans. All of the northern states had outlawed slavery back in 1820, but the rise of cotton made the enormous profits of the slave system irresistible to most white southerners. Relations regarding were further reinforced by the universal racial bond among white Georgian men. Sharing the intolerance that slaveholders held against African Americans, non slaveholding whites believed that the abolition of slavery would annihilate their own economic prospects and bring devastation ... The notice was addressed to her husband saying that their daughter six year old JonBenet Ramsey had been kidnapped. The abductors wrote on the papers step by step what they want them to do demanded a value of $118,000 for JonBenet to be returned home safe and unharmed which was really weird because it is almost exactly equal to the bonus that Patsy s husband John Ramsey had just lately got. When Patsy went to JonBenet s room and found out that she was not there Patsy and John reacted as quickly as possible then she and John had called the police to file JonBenet missing at 5:25 AM and telling the operator the ransom be aware s risk that JonBenet could be killed if the police have been notified. In keeping with the ransom observe and carefulness the abductors could be calling John Ramsey to offer him advice to give the ransom cash which he and Patsy had been already busy on gathering when the police arrived to their house. That decision by no means came. Then, police immediately suspected that John and Patsy have been somehow concerned in their daughter s disappearance. Vinyl Synthesis Essay The patterns of printed vinyl are printed using a paper top coat put directly on a thin vinyl surface and then covered with several layers of clear vinyl or urethane to create a protective wear layer. This type of vinyl is a more affordable option compared to inlaid vinyl but it is less durable. The patterns of inlaid vinyl floors are pass through a process that put tiny vinyl granules on the backing, forcing them up to the wear surface. This creates heavier and extremely durable floor. • 9. Ignatius Letter To The Philadelphians Analysis The letter to the Philadelphians follows next and like the first few letters continues to emphasise the role of the bishop. I believe even if Ignatius was not a Bishop himself he would still stress the importance of the bishop in the Church. To Ignatius the bishop is a sacred and important role in keeping order and spreading the word throughout the Church. In the previous letters Ignatius says that through the bishop you will find unity in the Church, to the Philadelphians he says through the bishop you will protect yourselves from schism and heresy in the Church. It is also in this letter that Ignatius warns specifically to not listen to the Jews. This comportment towards the Jews was common in early Christianity and can be seen throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After talking about the resurrection of Christ, Ignatius instructs the Smyrnaeans to beware of the heretics and not to speak or even meet with them if possible. He says the only thing they can do for them is to pray for their repentance, even though it will be difficult for them. Only Christ has the power to redeem the heretics and save them ultimately from themselves. This message to the Smyrnaeans is a very powerful message to Christianity as a whole and should be at the center piece for how a Christian is to act. With any religion or belief you will have those who are deemed heretics in the eyes of the believer. The negative way to deal with the heretics is to confront them with anger and harm but the positive way is really not to confront them at all. Instead of fighting fire with fire or Word against word, as a Christian the only thing you can do is leave it in God s hands. This idea is just as powerful in 100AD as it is in 2016AD. The letter to the Smyrnaeans goes on to reiterate the message of honoring the Bishop and not doing anything within the Church without the Bishop. Ignatius says about honoring the Bishop, He who honours the bishop has been honoured by God; he who does anything without the knowledge of the bishop, does [in reality] serve the devil. ... This could come in the form of comparisons of the cases, even though both belong to different hierarchies, and how the evidence is presented and if there stands to be a justifiable reasoning for including persuasive authority. In order for the case to be convincing, the case must be identical. Over a period of time, the strength of persuasive authority may change in light of new evidence in various jurisdictions, or even changes in precedents through legislation, over ruling a previous decision or even a superior court reversing their own previous case. To further make a persuasive authority more compelling, it must attempt to show strength through the following; Level of court where the decision was cast from. Working At The Country Club During my sophomore year of high school, one of my teachers approached me and asked if I was interested in a job for the summer at the country of a local country club. This can be found right at the beginning of the novel, when Orlando meets Sasha. Orlando is unable to tell whether Sasha is a man or a woman, for her height and her clothes make her appear androgynous. Orlando is attracted to Sasha as an individual, entirely separate from the fact about her gender (Kao, 2). One of the main arguments of the homosexual movement is to see people as people, not as men and women. An individual can love whoever he/she wants no matter what their sex. It is not about a person s gender, it is about the person him/herself. And though our narrator later does tell us that Orlando was ready to tear his hair with vexation that the person was of his own sex..., we don t forget those mischievous undertones Woolf threw at us upon their first meeting (Woolf, 17). At such a crucial time in the history of the African American, there was a struggle to be accepted and to fit into the American culture that so far had not embraced them. This held true for Ellington s family. As Ellington said of his father, he always acted as though he had money, whether he had it or not. [1] This sentiment and ... They would receive china and silverware, clothes and anything else naturally only gently used. If it were not for this, it would probably be impossible for the Ellington s to own a piano, let alone two of them! Ellington s family was part of a social group whose morals were steadfastly Victorian and often puritanical in outlook...Ellington was encouraged to become an achiever, and was taught pride in his race and a duty to represent it well. [3] The attitude and confidence that his family possessed is what led Ellington on the path that he took. The steadfast belief and faith that his family had in him is what encouraged Ellington to continue on and to persevere in life. Piano lessons did not go well in Ellington s early life. He was uninterested in the hobby and as he said, I missed more lessons than I took...After all, baseball, football, track and athletics were what real he men were identified with .[4] It was not until several years later, while working in a hotel down at the Jersey shore that someone suggested Ellington stop in Philadelphia on the way home to hear a pianist by the name of Harvey Brooks. • 35. How To Throw A Curveball Research Paper RPS stands for revolutions per second. It measures the rotations per second of a pitched ball. A good breaking ball at least requires 19 RPS. Learning to throw a curveball can be confusing at first; but as you learn and improve, it gets easier. Teamwork and motivation is an essential element in order to succeed. As a pitcher, it sometimes feels like its one versus nine. Even when the team and yourself make errors, you have to stay calm and relaxed. The cheering and yelling of the other team are distracting, but you have to stay strong when pitching. Being relaxed is key to throwing. If you try to throw a curveball tensed, it doesn t go well. To throw a curveball, you need to have a correct grip, an accurate release point, and you need to know when to throw a curveball. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The seams of the softball should be parallel and vertical. If you re a right handed thrower, place your right middle finger on the right seam, and your index finger on the other seam. If you don t have a correct or strong grip, there will not be as much spin on the ball. The more spin on the ball, the better. A ball will not travel far if it has a lot of spin after it has been hit. More spin equals more break. If you have enough spin on the ball, the seams will leave blisters on your fingertips. The release point and wrist snap determine if the ball will cut at the right time and if the ball will have a rotation. You release the ball at your right hip if you re right handed, and your hand will end at the left hip. Coaches usually say shoot the hip. That means after the ball has left your hands. Your index and middle finger should be at your left hip. Your elbow needs to be tucked to your side. If your elbow is out, the ball will gradually cut through the air instead of a sharp cut. If you re a right handed pitcher, the ball will cut to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Marine Mammal Bycatch Research Papers Acoustic Pingers on Nets in order to reduce Marine Mammal Bycatch A topic that is known for its controversy is the use of acoustic pingers on fishing nets in an attempt to reduce marine mammal bycatch. While this idea seems appealing and has its potential benefits, there are also drawbacks to the use of this kind of device as well. When a device such as the acoustic pinger is invented, it is important to consider the various types of impacts it will have, especially in terms of marine mammal species conservation. The desired goal of installation of acoustic pingers on fishing nets is to notably reduce the amount of marine mammal bycatch in fishing nets. While this is the immediate effect of the acoustic pingers, potential long term effects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of these devices is to reduce such bycatch, but with every tool there are pros and cons, positive and negative effects. When an acoustic pinger is put to use, all of these effects must be considered too when a marine mammal is exposed to the noise emitted by an acoustic pinger: potential for habituation, the dinner bell effect , changes in swimming behaviors and respiration rates, potential for change in echolocation behaviors, and the ideal frequency the pinger must have to create avoidance from fishery nets. Change in behaviors of fish not targeted by the acoustic pingers should still be taken into account as well upon use of these pingers. In addition, issues can lie within how the acoustic pinger is handled by fishermen: inefficient usage and the potential for equipment failure, along with varying degrees of willingness to use such a device on fishing trips can greatly impact the reduction rates of marine mammal bycatch, and even create the risk of further increasing bycatch rates when the goal was to lower them in the first place. Thus, while acoustic pingers were built with good intentions at conserving marine mammal species in attempt to reduce their rates as bycatch in fisherman nets, careful consideration must occur when putting one of these devices into actual use, including analysis of impacts from the perspectives of the target marine mammal species, the non targeted nearby fish species, and the fishermen running the fishing nets. The conclusion can be drawn that if acoustic pingers are put into use, they must be completely be put into use as a full and not partial set of pingers on the net, high maintenance must be kept up with to lower the chance of equipment failure, and the pingers must be specialized for certain marine mammal species in order to produce optimal results of reduction of marine mammal bycatch. It seems that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
