Recognizing and rewarding high performance is a key recommendation for any approach when
managing any merit pay program (HRIS 2012). Merit pay is a compensation system where base
pay increases and is determined by an individual s performance. Using a merit pay plan is a good
way for an organization to reward high performance is one benefit when using merit pay
programs. The first step in implementing or improving a merit pay program is to have a solid
performance management program, and this is another way a merit pay program is beneficial.
Merit pay is a way to be successful and effectively implement merit pay with a uplift in salaries,
and this is a third way using a merit pay program is beneficial to an organization. There are some
drawbacks when using merit pay programs, such as paying some employees more than others. If
you pay high performing workers more than low performing employees, the high performers may
stay, causing the low performers to complain or leave the organization. A second drawback in
using merit pay program is that employees become less motivated if not paid to their satisfaction.
For example, if employees feel they should be making more money for their performance, this
causes them to have low self esteem, and want to find employment at other organization. The last
drawback associated with

Too Much Television On Children And Technology
Adults have been worried about their children watching too much TV since, well, forever. For
decades, Americans had only one or two TVs in their home. Now a single household might have
dozens of them around the home. But the times have changed and in actuality, we are all
surrounded by screens nearly all the time from television, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and video
games. The American Academy of Pediatrics claims that children spend an average of 7 hours a
day on what it terms entertainment media, and that includes TVs, computers, phones, and other
electronic devices. The AAP also says that excessive media use can lead to attention problems,
school difficulties, sleep and eating disorders, and obesity. Are children spending too much time
staring at screens? Should parents limit how much time children spend on technology?
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Society of Pediatrics state infants aged
0 2 years should not have any exposure to technology, 3 5 years be restricted to one hour per day,
and 6 18 years restricted to 2 hours per day (AAP 2001/13, CPS 2010). Between 0 and 2 years,
infant s brains triple in size, and continue in a state of rapid development to 21 years of age
(Christakis 2011). Early brain development is usually determined by environmental stimuli, or lack
thereof. Stimulation to a developing brain caused by the overexposure to technologies, such as cell
phones, internet, tablets, TV, has been shown to be associated with

Asian Carp And The New Carp
Over the course of the mid to late 20th century, five species of non native carp fish, collectively
referred to as Asian carp , have been introduced to the United States either for aesthetic purposes,
to supplement game fishing, or to help manage local pest species. Some of these carp species
have escaped into America s waterways and proved to be prolific breeders and voracious feeders,
out hunting and out breeding native species. As with any environmental issue, there exist many
parties who have differing points of contention over this problem and many different solutions have
been proposed to correct it. To resolve this issue will take a comprehensive analysis of the problem
and an examination of the participants involved, their perspectives on Asian carp, and how the
proposed solutions to this issue will affect them. Beginning in the 1830 s, five successive waves
of foreign carp species; grass, common, silver, bighead, and black carp, were introduced to the
United States to help improve the quality of agricultural ponds, but some of them subsequently
escaped into the Midwestern river systems (Koel, 2000, Pg. 1). Of these species, the two most
infamous are silver and bighead carp. Both species are filter feeders, and following their entry into
the river systems in the eighties, they have been competing with native filter feeders for food
(Sampson, 2008, Pg. 483).
Asian carp grow in excess of five feet and can weigh upwards of 100 pounds. They are voracious

Gay People In North Carolina
Yes, there are LGBTQ people in North Carolina. Contrary to popular belief from the previous
governor Patrick McCrory and the general heteronormativity of the state, LGBTQ people go about
their everyday lives in North Carolina. But while non straight people exist beyond Manhattan, Los
Angeles, and San Francisco, they exist in a different, more suppressed manner. There are fewer
pride rallies, brunches, and general gay outings, and that is why the mural of Brandy Alexander the
drag queen, not the cocktail means so much to the North CarolinaLGBTQ community. Cities are

Encompassing the entire wall of a building, Brandy Alexander looks strong and daunting. With
her chin held high and left arm extended, Brandy looks as if she is ready to go into battle; and she
is. She is ready to continue the fight for LGBT rights. With an equality sign painted under her left
eye as if it were an eye black strip or war paint, Brandy is ready for combat. The hand of justice tops
off her scepter, and her pearl neckless appears to be blowing in the wind imagine Brandy
standing on a crag, wind blowing against her, ready to lead her army into battle. A broken shackle
falls from her left wrist, and her glamourous pearl necklace features an all gender bathroom logo,
both implying a sense of owning her oppression.
But most importantly, Brandy wears earrings with former Governor Patrick McCrory s face on
them. As the ultimate expression of her ownership over the situation, Brandy does not let McCrory
intimidate her, but rather she uses him as an accessory. Rather than acting as an intimidating force,
McCrory is merely an accessory that Brandy Alexander chose to use. The earrings act as a blatant
statement from the artists that the LGBTQ community will not be scared by or back down from
McCrory and his laws.
Swirling blues, yellows, and whites give the mural a sense of happiness and joy. Instead of using
dark colors to represent the dismal situation, the piece focuses on the

The Definition Of Social Equity In Public Administration
Social equity was presented to public administration first by H. George Frederickson in the 1960s
after the Standing Panel on Social Equity in Governance was created by the National Academy of
Public Administration (NAPA) (Johnson, 2012). Social equity is the fourth pillar of public
administration by the NAPA (Norman Major, 2011). According to the panel their definition of
social equity is fair, just and equitable management of all institutions serving the public directly or
by contract (Johnson, 2012). In Wooldridge, Gooden (2009) they state that the idea of social equity
in public administration is inseparably linked to John Rawlss A Theory of Justice(1971). Rawls
developed the principle of justice as fairness. Fairness is justice would mean that people have
equal rights to basic liberty (Rawls, 1971). To be discussed will be comparison and differences
between many author overtime that has touch social equity regarding its definition, challenges
along with the overall conclusion. The fact that the use of these notions has evolved in different
ways over time (Herrera, 2007) is why this is being mentioned.
What is social equity
Every author interprets and define social equity a little differently. Social equity issues, refers to
the distribution of fairness. (Guy McCandless, 2012). Social equity is rooted in the idea that each
person is equal and has inalienable rights. With America s being a blend of social, religious,
economic, and political characteristics, the

While one of husbands is visiting her, she would put weapons in front of her house, to notify the
other husbands jus in case they decided to visit her at the time when one of her other husbands was
there. Instead of relying on her husbands to protect her, provide her with food, money and things
husbands would normally provide, the Nayar women relied on their brothers or sisters.
Comparing these cultures to each other, you can see that they are very different. For one the Ik
culture don t have concern for family at all while the Pomo Indians think life is all about family
but the Nayar Society didn t seem to think of themselves as family but as associates to each other
to carry the generation on. From looking at the positive views on family, I would say that the
Pomo Indians are the most caring culture out of the three cultures, and while the Ik may seem like
a horrible culture, I would say that the Nayar Society is the worst as it seems like a disorganised
and uncaring culture.
When it comes to my culture, we believe that family is very, very important. We believe that you
need your family to be there to support you through the good and bad times and to help you and
train you as you grow up. You also need your family to help with the progress of the family. In the
olden days, it was believed that it was the job of the boy(s) and the father to go out to the

Long-Term Consequences Of Children In The Culture Of...
In today s society, children are immersed in the culture of competition. This can be seen in all
aspects of children lifestyles: games, sports, classroom settings, etc. Competition can be healthy in
moderation, but too often children are only taught to win. However, the long term consequences of
such a competitive culture are seldom thought of by parents. Placing too much emphasis on
winning can destroy a childs view on hard work and team play, as well as destroy self esteem and
confidence later on in life. In our society, competition is not beneficial for kids and must be
discouraged, or we risk raising a generation grown on false hope.
Hard work and team play are often aspects of a child s life that are diminished with the

People argue that in order for our children to learn to succeed in life, we must train them from an
early age. Matt Richtel s New York Times article mentions this. Many scholars agree that
competition is necessary, ingrained and essential (Richtel, 2012). To some degree, this is true.
We do need to train children to excel in all that they are capable of doing. However, if we were
to allow for competition to be a part of the everyday lives of children, we must allow for it to
occur only for self improvement. If we allow for competition, we must make it okay for them to
lose. A platform for trial and error is necessary training. Sadly, not everyone has that mindset, and
winning is the goal. We can t change everyone s mind about it, so we must work to discourage
childhood competition altogether. In Competition Can Be a Positive Experience for Kids, Mark
Cinelli analyzes the dynamics of competition, and states the type of competition that we need to
see in Competition is a big part of our children s lives, and it s here to stay for a long time . . . We
need to praise every effort by character, self esteem, a competitive spirit and a sense of fair play. I
think we d all agree that if our children displayed all of the above attributes throughout their lives,
we would be extremely proud parents. (Cinelli,

Susan B. Anthony And The Abolitionist Movement
Susan B. Anthony devoted her life to the rights of women s labor, receiving equal pay, and
leading the women s suffrage movement. She grew up in a home where politics was frequently
discussed. Her family supported an end to slavery as part of the abolitionist movement. In her
early years, she was a teacher and became involved in the temperance movement as well as the
anti slavery movement. Because she was a woman, she was not allowed to voice her opinion.
This became a motivator for her to become a woman s suffrage leader. A skilled, talented woman
made a difference when she joined forces with Stanton. As mentioned earlier, Stanton and
Anthony opposed the fourteenth and fifteen amendments for not liberating women. As Mayo
states, she published The Revolution, a radical paper, edited by Stanton (1868 1870), and
lectured for over six years to pay off its debt. (Rights for Women, para.3) She was arrested for
voting in 1872. She led a woman s protest at the 1876 Centennial delivering a Declaration of
Rights written by Stanton and Matilda Gage. She wrote and published, with Stanton and Gage the
History of Woman Suffrage (1881 1885) (Mayo para. 5). Although she was arrested and it seemed
like nothing came easy, she never gave up. Anthony was a hard working woman that rallied many in
hopes of advancing women s rights. She gathered signatures on suffrage petitions at the state and
national levels, undertook arduous state tours to organize suffrage campaigns in the states

Elizabethan Pirates Essay
Elizabethan Pirates
Did you ever think that some pirates fought for their country? Contrary to what some might believe,
Elizabethan pirates, or privateers, fought for Queen Elizabeth of England. Also, for various reasons
they were called sea dogs and buccaneers. The privateers were actually encouraged by the
government to pillage their enemies. Elizabethan privateers were enlisted and licensed by the
government, were unified in their cause, focused more on capturing than destroying enemy ships,
and were made famous through their victories.
In the Elizabethan Era, England and Spain were in conflict due to their differences in religion. With
the arrival of Queen Elizabeth, the official religion of England changed to Protestant (Religion ...

These pirates then became known as privateers because of their new alliances. A pirate will attack
anybody, regardless of nationality, whereas a privateer has a license and will attack only the
enemies of his/her country (Elizabeth s Sea Dogs).
Another interesting fact about privateers is that they were unified in their cause. Regular pirates
have little to no affiliation with each other, whereas all the privateers that Queen Elizabeth hired
worked together to achieve the same goal. Because of this, they accomplished very large feats. If
they hadn t worked together, winning the war would have been extremely difficult. The teamwork
of the privateers is what intimidated the King of Spain and allowed them to severely damage the
Armada (Sir Francis Drake). The unity of the privateers with the Royal English Navy also had a
large impact on the war. If England was to win, teamwork between the Navy and the privateers was
very important. If they hadn t gotten along, several battles could have been lost just because of
arguments.
Elizabethan privateers focused on capturing ships rather than destroying them. This way, they and
Queen Elizabeth could profit from their victories. If the privateers had destroyed the ships, there
would have been no gain at all for the English. By capturing the ships, they acquired the loot and
the ships

My Life Change Essay
Your life can change so much in such little time. It can change in either a good way or a bad way.
For me personally it changed in a great way. So many aspects of my life have changed in the past
year. One of the aspects that changed was my education. I used to go to Miami Dade college but
was not that passionate about my major, so i would go to classes really late or not even show up at
all. I was kinda lost and i picked a major that i really didnt wanna do. Now ive picked a major that
im really excited. I enrolled into Keiser University and im doing really good in school right now.
Another way my life changed i met the girl of my dreams. I am really in love with her and she
makes my life so much better. Ive never had so much fun with someone but she makes me the
happiest. The last thing that has changed in my life was my job. I used to work at a resteraunt
where i only got paid $8.50 and i did so much work compared to the job now that i make $9.50 and
dont do as much work. I also enjoy it much more. My life is the greatest it has ever been.
Education i think is one of the most important things someone can get. Without education in this
world i feel like it is really hard to get a good paying job. My life before i would barely wanna go to
school because i hated the education and the major i picked. I only went to school because of my
mom. I only worked because i would rather make money. One day it hit me i didnt wanna work at
a restaurent my whole life. So thats when i

Essay Music Copyright
What is a Copyright?
Music Copyright is a very important aspect of the music industry. The Copyright law was
established to preserve the creativity and rights of authors, composers, performers of expression.
Copyright is the law that protects the property rights of the creator of an original work in a fixed
tangible medium. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/copyright) A fixed tangible medium is
something substantial like copying lyrics on paper or putting a song on tape or CD. Copyright can
be seen every where in the music industry. Many music artist of our culture today have been
involved in copyright issues. Recently, on MTV news it was stated that, As the music industry

This establishes the artist as the creator of that work. It is not illegal for a person to write the
symbol on their work themselves. The correct way to place a copyright symbol on your original
fixed tangible medium is like this:
Copyright 2001 Aja Star Lane
For record companies it, looks like this:
2001 Virgin Records. All Rights Reserved. (http://askjeeves.com/copyright/html)
This states the day of creation of a musical work. If you do not have the money for the legal fees
of the federal copyright process yet, the first thing an artist should do with a musical work is the
poor mans copyright . Poor mans copyright is when the artist puts their fixed tangible medium in
an envelope with appropriate postage stamps and mails it back to themselves without opening it.
This postmark creates proof of the creator and is the date of creation for the musical work.
Why should an artist copyright an original work?
Copyrighting a musical expression just ensures that an artist is the creator of that work. There
are a couple of reasons why an artist should copyright their original works. The main one is the
creator of a work wants to be able to protect his or her work. Also, financial gain from suing.
There would not be any purpose in creating music without financial gain for some. If you live in
the United States and legally registered your musical works you have

Mate Selection Theories
Mate Selection Theories in Action Choosing a life partner is a crucial task that majority of
individuals, if not everyone, partake in sometime during their lifetime. This process is otherwise
known as mate selection (White, Martin, Bartolic, 2013). Since mate selection is such an
important aspect of any individual s life, it would make sense that it is an area that has been
researched extensively. There are a number of mate selection theories in existence, but this paper
will focus on looking at biosocial theory and equity theory specifically. I find biosocial theory
quite intriguing because it is something I can see while living out my everyday life. This specific
mate selection theory states that women are more selective of partners... Show more content on

The Importance Of Freedom In Journalism And The Freedom Of...
As Americans, we are taught from childhood to internalize the importance of freedom and to
sing the praises of the land of the free. Political rallies, presidential speeches, and Internet forums
light up day after day with fierce debates over freedom of speech or religion or the right to bear
arms, but one freedom most of us fail to prioritize as we should is one unique to developed
countries yet absolutely crucial of a true democracy: freedom of the press.
Journalists expose government corruption, systemic and societal injustices, business malpractices,
human rights violations, and more truths that government and businesses would rather hide.
Despite efforts to keep certain acts under wraps, it is imperative that citizens understand all
motives and beliefs of those in power in order to be fully informed when fulfilling their civic
duties of voting and partaking in political discourse. That is the media s job, yet we are entering
an era where popular opinion of the media is ever declining and leaders encourage silencing the
free press that brings to light these pivotal issues. In my future, I hope to use a Bachelor s or
Master s degrees in Journalism and Political Science to reestablish the currently wavering honesty
and integrity in some areas of journalism that contribute to dangerous anti media ideas. We need to
protect our democracy by demanding honesty and transparency in government and big business,
but this goal can never be achieved if our society responds to

Notes On The Rise Ra Out Of The Horizon
I chisel away at the limestone; I am writing on a tablet. It reads Rise Ra out of the horizon . I was
ordered by Pharaoh Khafre to make this tablet, it will be soon used in a temple to honor the great
god of the sun, Ra. Pharaoh Khafre worships Ra more than any other Pharaoh we have had in the
past. He is trying to ensure that there is harmony between people and nature. He plans to build a
great monument for us to worship the god Rain. A great pyramid is in the works of being built as
well, this pyramid will be similar to his father Pharaoh Khufus and will be his final resting place. I
am a scribe, meaning I know how to read and write in our language. My job is to inscribe
temples, tablets or any other thing I am asked to. These letters I am writing are called
hieroglyphics and we only use them when we talk to or about the gods, they are a religious
alphabet we use to honor them. Our everyday writing is called hieratics and it is mainly used for
business, administration and keeping records on papyrus, our form of paper, it is reed flattened
out. I do enjoy my job; I am not dragging limestone for distances or slaving away building
pyramids or temples for our pharaoh. You could say that I am of a higher social division. I am

these are not extremely poor but are not rich either.

The Importance Of Community In Our Town By Thornton Wilder
Somewhere there is a town where everyone s best friend is their next door neighbor. Everyone
here would always stop and talk about what is going on, no matter who you are. Such community
does exist, but only in the small town of Grover s Corners, New Hampshire. The value and
importance of community is shown in Our Town by Thornton Wilderusing repetition and pattern of
events. A few important times this is shown is the play is when Emily and George s disagreements
with each other help grow their relationship. When Howie Newsome greets neighbors while he
delivers the milk across town is a significant part of Grover s Corners community. Emily s death is
also meaningful to the community s connections to each other.
The value of community is shown when Emily would repeatedly argue with George but their
disagreements made their relationship better. One small disagreement between George and Emily
happened on their way home from school one day:
GEORGE. I don t mean the answers, Emily, of course not ... just some little hints ...
EMILY. Oh, I think hints are allowed. So ah if you get stuck, George, you whistle to me; and I ll
give you some hints. (29)
In this passage, Emily s hesitation shows she unsure if she is willing to help George with his work.
Emily does not affirm her disagreement with George mostly because she does not want him to
continue pleading for answers. Emily and George s arguments came up a few times throughout the
story:

The Structural Transformation Of The Public Sphere...
Literature Review Jurgen Habermas can be seen as one of the founders of the term and details the
idea of refeudalization in their novel The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere in which
he writes how the bourgeois public sphere eroded because of economic and structural changes. The
boundaries between state and society blurred, leading to a kind of refeudalization of society.
(Habermas, 1989). Essentially state and society became involved in each other s spheres and large
non governmental organizations replaced the old institutions of the public sphere. Furthermore,
where the public sphere takes on a feudal aspect is the process of politicians and organizations
representing themselves before the voters. (Habermas, 1989). These ideas are then further
explained in more contemporary contexts by Alain Supiot writing that primarily of the
refeudalization of law but also ignorance of the organization of powers underpinning the
government by laws is taking us back to government by men, that is, to feudal ways of hybridizing
the public and the private. (Supiot, 2013). Then further clarifying that Western feudalism today is
the dependency between people having a legal character where there are status differences and the
dependent party may be granted possession, but it is burdened by the obligations to the benefit of
the grantor. (Supiot, 2013). Supiot does however put forward the idea that refeudalization of law
does not mean a return to the middle agesbut

The Positive Implication Of Multinational Corporations
Introduction
The global landscape of business is continually expanding and major companies are crossing
borders in their daily business activities. As these multinational corporations branch into new areas,
known as emerging markets, they will face a plethora of risk, challenges, and opportunities.
Branding and sustainability are two major aspects of a business and emerging markets provide a
different landscape that will require strategic changes and innovative solutions. One of the major
ramifications of these corporations entering emerging markets, is their coherence to the principles
of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Whereas much of the past research on this topic focuses
primarily on the risks and challenges a company faces in such a situation, this paper will focus
primarily on the positive implications of Multinational Corporations (MNCs). This paper will look
to answer what CSR efforts should be taken by MNCs? What are the risk, challenges, and benefits
to MNCs and the emerging market? What are the effects on the MNCs brand when they participate
in CSR? How is the nature of the emerging market important when taking into consideration CSR?
Given the stature and resources that many MNCs have, they have the potential to make a major
positive impact on emerging markets in the realm of ethics, rights, and quality of life.

Machiavelli Characteristics
Machiavelli lived in Italy, in the 1400 s. Italy was divided into city states and every state had its
own leader, but everyone also was ruled under a king. Machiavelli wrote this book, The Prince,
in order to help a leader how to lead. It was very important at that time that a leader was strong in
order to develop and move forward with his rule and empire. Machiavelli created this theory in
order to help these leaders control their society powerfully. He tries to represent the perfect leader
and his ways on how to rule. Machiavelli thinks mainly that man by his nature is evil. That s why
people only pursue their own self interest. That s why a ruler should be feared than loved according
to Machiavelli.

1.With what question(s) is/are the author mainly concerned?
The author of this paper prefaces their findings with a lengthy list of similar arguments and
studies related to the question they re setting out to solve. Generally, these studies all provide
evidence that face and object recognition are carried out by different processes in the brain in
different specialized areas. The author of this paper wanted to dive into this question more
specifically, aiming to find the precise area that this face recognition is processed in. Is there a
specific area of the brain that is responsible for recognizing faces? More specifically, is the fusiform
gyrus the area ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second experiment produced results that showed this activation (found in the fusiform gyrus),
was higher for normalized faces than scrambled faces or for houses. In the third experiment, the
author found that this area responded higher for passive faces at different angles when the hair of
the subject was concealed than for human hands. This study also showed that the fusiform face area
responded just as highly to faces with hair present or concealed. Ultimately, the fusiform face area
responds selectively to faces in a variety of cases: gray scale, front facing, two toned, three quarter
view, and with hair concealed. The activation region was found in the fusiform gyrus and
immediate surrounding areas, mainly lateralized in the right hemisphere.
4.How does the evidence support the author s arguments?
The results of the first task (analyzing areas of the ventral pathway that responded significantly
higher to faces), showed that there was one specific region that showed consistently higher
activation for faces than for objects throughout every subject: the right fusiform gyrus. These results
also showed opposite activation patterns for object viewing, providing a double dissociation for
face and object recognition. This provides evidence that higher activation during facial recognition
is not simply due to faces requiring a higher processing power than objects, but instead

New Atlantis By William Harvey
London, in the seventeenth century, underwent a progressive epistemological shift. In this period,
the intellectual paradigm slowly transitioned from a model wherein religious dogma, mysticism,
and class structure were the progenitors of thought to a model wherein scientific empiricism
informed discovery. Although there was a conflict between these ideological frameworks, we
should not see this confrontation of epistemologies as an overt and adversarial crisis of thought.
Rather, the people responsible for confronting the antique with the scientific often attempted to
consolidate their ideologies with those ideologies they were subtly challenging; they attempted to
act within the framework which they rejected. In this essay, we will explore this nearly
contradictory sentiment by examining four scientific works: On the Motion of the Heart, by
William Harvey, Micrographia, by Robert Hooke, New Atlantis and The Great Instauration, by
Francis Bacon, and 153 Chymical Aphorisms, by Chr. Packe. These four texts emerged from three
distinct modes of scientific inquiry: the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

heaven. With this quote, Bacon established that notions of divinity and salvation supercede any
question of knowledge attainment, and he therefore operated within Christian power

Nearly a year before the battle took place, June 3rd, 1942, the Japanese seized Attu with only
natives living there. The Japanese reestablished a base on Attu on October 29, 1942 under the
leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Hiroshi Yanekawa.1 The Japanese set up strong defensive
positions with antiaircraft and numerous caches of arms, ammunition and food spread across
different locations on the island. U.S. forces did not have such advantage and had a difficult time
with logistics due to the unforgiving elements. The islands beaches consisted of muskeg which
created very difficult circumstances for U.S. vehicles that the engineers were crucial in resolving.
Although the harsh climate and terrain caused many problems for both sides, it was more
impactful against the Japanese due to the long period of acclimation they endured.2 The Japanese
mission was to occupy Attu and build an airstrip to stage air reconnaissance missions that would

How Does Edna Committed Suicide
In 1898 Kate Chopin wrote a novel titled The Awakening that took place in a Louisiana Setting.
The main character Edna experiences an awakening physically and emotionally. The ending to
Chopin s novel is ambiguous and leaves the reader to make their own conclusion as to whether
Edna committed suicide willingly or not. By Edna committing suicide, it can be justified as a way
for her to escape from the society in which she lives and the situations she faces.
In the beginning of Chopin s novel the setting starts in Grand Isle, Louisiana and gradually changes
to New Orleans, Louisiana. During the time Chopin wrote the novel women were suppose to be
motherly and submissive to their husbands. Edna did not posses either of those characteristics and
was not considered a mother woman (Chopin 9) and she longed for a life that she would struggle
to have. Edna went through many stages to reach the freedom she wanted. Chopin used symbols
such as the Caged Bird in the beginning of the novel to represent Edna. A Green and Yellow

Positive Impact Of Social Media On The Movie Industry
Ever since the successful marketing campaign of The Blair Witch Project , studios have
progressively marketed their films in social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
other forms of websites. This has become more apparent in recent years where films even have
their own social media accounts to share and update fans with anything related to the filmitself
whether it be interviews with the cast, trailers, movie posters, or just to simply interact with
their fans. Some movie critics claim that social media is ruining the movie industry because
films tend to get too much coverage which leads to spoilers getting revealed before the film
releases. However, I believe that social media is not only a positive for the movie industry it s
an innovation because it s a cheap and effective way to generate buzz for a film, it allows the
fans to feel more connected with the movie they re planning to see, and individuals can easily
voice their opinion about a flick whether it be positive or negative. Have you ever noticed that
people nowadays instinctively go to any social media outlet, most notably YouTube to check out
all the new movie trailers released for upcoming films, if so then you have already detected that
movie studios tend to do this in a regular basis because it s a cheap and effective way to produce
talk for their future films. The most recent example of this would have to go to Marvel Studios and
the release of the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity

The Development And Growth Of A Child Into Their Adult Years
Throughout the decades, there have been many theorists that have contributed their ideas and
proposals, in regards to what they believe affects the development and growth of a child into their
adult years. Three of these successful theorists include: Erik Erikson, Daniel Levinson, and George
Herbert Mead. They each studied the developmental stages throughout one s life in their own
perspectives, each proposing a new and revised theory.
Born in 1902, Erik Erikson was a psychologist best known for his study and theory of psychosocial
development and the concept of the identity crisis. He has published a number of books on his
theories and research, including Childhood and Society, The Life Cycle Completed, and Gandhi s

Mistrust . Therefore, depending on how the child is raised and treated throughout this stage,
determines whether the child learns to trust the world and his surroundings to fulfill his needs.
Erikson believed that although there are different challenges the individual must successfully
master at each stage, these issues overlap with the issues of another level. This is because how one
deals with the earlier challenges determines how one will resolve later challenges, as there is a
connection between present patterns of thinking and feeling, and the earlier unresolved and/or
resolved development issues. Going back to the example with the child, if he/she does not learn to
trust in this stage, then trust will remain an unresolved issue throughout the subsequent stages of
development.
Erikson s theory is extremely important and significant in terms of understanding the growth and
development of an individual. His theory helps to explain the levels of conflict that every
individual must undergo, and the possibilities that may arise if the individual in unsuccessful and
does not overcome the challenges that he/she is faced with. As stated in the example above, if
the child did not learn to trust in the first stage, it will affect him in all the following stages, as he
/she will continue to have a lack of trust in the world. Erikson s theory helps us to understand why
some people lack certain feelings or emotions, as we can now recognize that the

Teachers have to examine their prior experiences and confront fears that influenced their value
system ( Vang, 2005). In the article, An Ecological Perspective on Preparing Teachers for
Multicultural Classrooms (Johnson, 2003), it is stated that discussions of multicultural education
generally center on the importance of broadening students understanding and appreciation of
diverse cultures. The authors here want to make sure that the teachers and trying to deal with the

Teachers really do not know how influence they have in their students. Maybe if the teachers begin
to start embracing all students; we will see more effective teaching in the multicultural classroom.
There is a lot of inequality amongst students of lower socioeconomic class. There is a drop out

Concerns in the Game
Collegiate sports have progressed to one of the most highly profitable industries in the U.S.
today. Through the years, these institutions have developed, marketed, and optimized a method
to generate revenue of high levels. Yet, no one seems to have a problem with the fact that these
players are being utilized and objectified for their talents. Each athlete must give up more than
they should, without reasonable benefits. In fact, The University of Alabama made nearly
$143.5 million in revenue alone during the 2012 2013 year (Solomon). Exactly $0 went to the
players for their in season efforts. Players nowadays are highly recruited and not all of them are
given large sums of money to receive a degree from the highly acclaimed schools. In days past,
athletes would be more than willing to make any accommodations in order to play the game they

The Safety Standards Of Mercury
Mercury is extremely dangerous to humans due to its extreme conditions not suitable to human life.
Missions to Mercury must be conducted with infallible safety standards to prevent incidents such as
what has happened in the past. These safety standards must consider all possible circumstances in
which measures must be taken. When doing missions on Mercury safety should be the number one
priority. Before creating safety standards, it is important to first acknowledge issues and situations
that has arisen in the past. Awhile back, a team of scientist were sent to complete a mission on
Mercury. Accompanied with them was a robotthat went by the name of Speedy. Speedy was a
multifunctional robot built to assist the scientist with whatever they needed. Speedy was especially
useful against Mercuries harsh conditions. He was able to maneuver the surface where humans

their photo cell banks. These banks are important in keeping the base on Mercury from burning
up. Speedy was capable of retrieving this selenium, but was the only one capable of doing so. This
is because he was the only robot sent with the team. The safety flaw in only having one robot to

technology. On the day of the mission, Speedy was sent out to retrieve the selenium. The scientist

The Trenches Of Birdsong ( 1993 )
Examine the ways Faulks presents superstition among characters in the trenches in Birdsong (1993).
Superstition as an excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural is often
associated with perilous endeavours, and a psychological need to latch on to a mechanism to allow
hope for the preservation of the fragile human condition. This systematic and illogical belief in the
supernatural is extensively prevalent throughout Faulks novel, during the linear storyline of
Stephen and other orbital characters it is referenced through not only irrational fears but

This thus deepens the contrast to the final section of the sentence which informs the reader that
Weir is fascinated by the divination taking place. Using the adjective fascinated precisely aligns
with imagery associated with a childlike fixation upon something, and so it can be extrapolated
that in this case the object of the subject s curiosity is extispicy. That Weir can stomach such a
ritual and remain engaged and fascinated suggest that the character truly believes that this can
determine his future with a degree of useful accuracy. This barbaric practice and all its derivatives
collectively indicate the desperation of the soldiers and how they are left with no option but to
cling on to any form of hope they can muster.
As well as an air of hope, an underlying sense of ridicule and even mockery is brought to bear
through Ellis response to the ritualistic predictions, remarking that Stephen and Weir should be
ashamed of themselves . A depth of ignominy is acknowledged in this light, which evinces that
certain soldiers believe such practice to be nonsense and that those who practice it should be
embarrassed. Specific phrasing as you should be ashamed stipulates an understanding that such
behaviour was commonplace, as the characters are not ashamed, however it is of Ellis opinion that
they should be. Faulks in this way offers

Art Museum Essay
Before visiting the Walter s Art Museum, I was thinking about which topic I should be focusing
on. At first, I was thinking Asian Arts might be the easiest topic for me to do the term paper.
Since I got some Asian cultural background. However, this museum doesn t have a lot of Asian
arts on display that really interesting to me. Mostly, I see were Chinese ceramics and potteries. I
was hoping to see some calligraphy and handscrolls on display at the museum then seeing those
artworks on their website. As I continue looking around, I realized this museum has a lot of great
collection with tons of variety; Roman, Greece, Egyptian, Renaissance, Asian, and Medieval arts.

According to the Book of Judith in the Catholic Old Testament, the virtuous widow Judith saved
her people when the military commanders failed to lift a siege by the Assyrians. She beguiled the
enemy General Holofernes into getting drunk and cut off his head. The artist heightened the
drama by contrasting Judith s serene determination with the amazement and horror exploding
from the general s face. Portraying his head upside down emphasizes Holofernes defeat and
evokes the reversal of societal norms in a woman s victory over a strong man. (SKORINA, F.

Essay Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic syndrome that is characterized by
inflammation of the peripheral joints, but it may also involve the lungs, heart, blood vessels, and
eyes. The prevalence of this autoimmune disease is between 0.3% to 1.5% of the population in
the United States (Feinberg, pp 815). It affects women two to three times more often than men,
and the onset of RA is usually between 25 and 50 years of age, but it can occur at any age (Reed,
pp 584). RA can be diagnosed by establishing the presence of persistent joint pain, swelling in a
symmetric distribution, and prolonged morning stiffness. RA usually affects multiple joints, such

Health Assessment Questionnaire, is a functional assessment that allows the therapist to get a
better understanding of the practical capabilities of patients that are suffering from RA. The
Assessment of Motor and Process Skills allows an accurate estimate of ability to do IADLs
based on performance of three tasks. Treatment addresses the problems identified by evaluation
of the patient, and often are guided by the progression of the disease. Some specific goals to work
on with an individual with RA may be to maintain joint mobility, prevent joint deformity, maintain
or increase strength and functional ability, balancing activity with rest, develop problem solving
skills to modify daily activities at home and at work to protect joints and preserve energy, and
especially promote psychosocial adaptations to deal with their chronic disability. (Pisetsky, 2789).

The Yellow Wallpaper from the Point of View of a Doctor s...
The Yellow Wallpaper from the Point of View of a Doctor s Wife The Yellow Wallpaper by
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is a story told from the first person point of view of a doctor s wife
who has nervous condition. The first person standpoint gives the reader access only to the
woman s thoughts, and thus, is limited. The limited viewpoint of this story helps the reader to
experience a feeling of isolation, just as the wife feels throughout the story. The point of view is
also limited in that the story takes places in the present, and as a result the wife has no benefit of
hindsight, and is never able to actually see that the men in her life are part of the reason she never
gets well. This paper will discuss how Gilman s choice of point of... Show more content on

No matter what a woman did or thought, she was still seen as the lesser of the sexes.Like the
narrator, women of that time were directed to suppress their creativity as it threatened the
dominating male s sense of control. By having the narrator be forced to write in secret, There
comes John, and I must put this away he hates to have me write a word, Gilman was able to
show that even the simplest things, like wanting to write were forbidden, lest the male approved
(392). Prohibited from working and not being able to contribute to the household as a proper
wife, the narrator begins to feel helpless: So I... am absolutely forbidden to work until I am well
again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas (390). The narrator s husband and brother both
exert their own will over hers, forcing her to do what they think is the appropriate behavior for a
sick woman. She has been given a schedule[d] prescription for each hour in the day; [John] takes
all care from me (391). The way that she is required to act involves practically no exertion of her
own free will. Instead, she is expected to obediently accept the fact that her own ideas are mere
fancy, and only the opinions of the men in her life can be trusted. The fact that she is not allowed to
think for herself is narrowing the extent of her authority in her life and of her autonomy. With no
creative outlet her mind starts to find things upon which to dwell, things that only she can see.

Low Back Pain
LOW BACK PAIN ACUTE
It is the pain felt in your lower back which may come from the spine, muscles, nerves, or other
nearby structures. It may also be due to problems in your mid or upper back, the testicles or
ovaries, or a hernia in the groin.
CAUSES
* If you are like most people, you will have at least one backache in your life. While such pain or
discomfort can happen anywhere in your back, the most common area affected is your low back.
This is because the low back supports most of your body s weight. * Low back pain is the number
two reason that Americans see their doctor second only to colds and flues. Many back related
injuries happen at work. But you can change that. There are many things you can do to lower your

Your doctor will ask you to speak up if there are areas where the sensation from the pin, cotton, or

doctor will probably not order any tests during the first visit. However, if you have any of the
symptoms or circumstances below, your doctor may order imaging tests even at this initial exam: *
Pain that has lasted longer than one month * Numbness * Muscle weakness * Accident or injury *
Fever * If you are over 65 * You have had cancer or have a strong family history of cancer *
Weight loss * In these cases, the doctor is looking for a tumor, infection, fracture, or serious
nerve disorder. The symptoms above are clues that one of these conditions may be present. The
presence of a tumor, infection, fracture, or serious nerve disorder change how your back pain is
treated. * Tests that might be ordered include an x ray, myelogram (an x ray or CT scan of the
spine after dye has been injected into the spinal column), CT of the lower spine, or MRI of the
lower spine. * Hospitalization, traction,or spinal surgery should only be considered if nerve
damage is present or the condition fails to heal after a prolonged period. * Many people benefit

Southern Women During The Civil War Analysis
Historians of the Southern woman during the Civil War can come to no agreement concerning the
nature and the role of women in the conflict. According to A.P. Jones, author of The Flower of
Southern Womanhood, Southern women a hundred years ago were lazy, spoiled, and beautiful
(22). They cared only for themselves and subordinated their children, their husbands, and their
servants to their own interests (22). Historians Harvey Lowe, on the other hand, contends that
Southern women were energetic, intelligent, and well trained in domestic and public service (66).
Although not as beautiful as had been assumed, they were of high character. As one article puts it,
The spiritual faith of the Southern Southern womanis said to have sustained

Shylock
Act IV scene 1 is an intense scene in the play where we see many of the play s main themes such
as justice and mercy, money and status, revenge, loyalty, love and prejudice and tolerance.
Shakespeare presents a harsh character in Shylock the Jew, but the fact that he also gives him the

This would suggest that Shakespeare is using Shylock as more than a symbol of Jewishness . In
this piece of coursework I will be examining mainly how sympathetic or unsympathetic the various
versions seem to be and how each Director has succeeded in making the character of Shylock
worthy of Shakespeare s realism.
Jews were traditionally viewed as outsiders and were not citizens. Christians as far back as the
11th century could not lend money without interest and many Jews earned a living from this
profession as they could not join the artisan guilds. As they became their own debt collectors they
soon became the target of resentment. A myth was born; with which Shakespeare s audience would
have been familiar, of ritual murder or blood libel that Jews would kill adult Christians. It is to this
myth to which Shakespeare seems to allude in the pound of flesh incident in this scene.
Shakespeare is original in showing us the extent to which Shylock is oppressed by Christians
surrounding him and it is through this that Shakespeare succeeds in drawing out sympathy from his
audience.
Analysis of Act IV scene 1
In the text of Act IV scene 1 before we meet Shylock he is described as a stony adversary, an
inhuman wretch, incapable of pity, void and empty from any dram of mercy . Antonio describes
Shylock s spirit as being full of tyranny and rage . When Shylock enters

Cyberbullying Is A Problem That Affects More Than One...
With the new twitter update which allows that creation of polls that users can vote in, countless
accounts have been created to poke fun at someone s personality or looks, this is what is called
cyberbullying, and it happens each and everyday. Cyberbullying is a problem that affects more
than one fourth of adolescents in middle school and high school. With the growth of technology it
has become more imperative to implement programs in schools to help solve this problem. Today,
teenagers rely more on the internet, and other technologies to keep in touch with their friends, and
social lives. They are on all sorts of social media platforms such as facebook, twitter, instagram,
snapchat and so much more. They also use different forms of technology such as cellphones, and
online chatrooms to communicate with friends and social circles. Many adolescents use this
growing technology as a bridge between their everyday reality, and virtual reality, and sometimes,
use this technology to intimidate and harass other students which is a form of cyberbullying.
Jemica Carter and Wilson Feleta, authors of Cyberbullying a 21st century health care phenomenon,

Augustine Of Hippo Confessions
Introduction
Augustine of Hippo was a man who had a great hunger for knowledge and a passion is for
sharing what he learned. It began with his studies in rhetoric and philosophy as a boy and ended
with a passion for scripture and a desire for others to benefit from his experiences and knowledge.
His early quests for information and answers left him hollow and longing for more. He states in the
first paragraph of his Confessions ...Thou hast formed us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless till
they find rest in thee. Augustine felt that God used his sinful past as a call to humility while helping
him understand the depth of human corruptibility so he could fully appreciate the amazing power
of grace. By putting his old self aside, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Holding firmly to 1 Corinthians 5:9 13, the Donatists taught that the grace of God could only be
found in an undefiled church. This belief caused them to separate from the Catholic Church and
limit their membership to those they felt had overcome the temptation of sin. They did not
recognize baptisms and Lord s Supper to be valid unless it occurred within their church. A
legitimate baptism in the Donatist church was believed to give new life, and when the priest was
baptized he was also given the ability to give new life to others. A person baptized outside the true
church needed to be re baptized to ensure they received the proper blessing. They held martyrdom

John Cheng
November 11, 2016 Island: poetry and history of Chinese immigrants on Angel Island
Chinese immigration to the United States began in large number during the California Gold Rush.
Many people came to the country hoping to find jobs and fortune for themselves and their families
back in China. Among those immigrants many stayed in the country and others went back to China.
The point of entry for these Chinese immigrants to California between 1910 and 1940 was the
Angles Island in San Francisco. The Island was like that of the Ellis Island in New York. These
islands were the immigration detention headquarters for the immigrants waiting on their medical
examinations and immigration papers. It was also the holding ground for deportees awaiting
transportation back to the mother land.
Island: poetry and history of Chinese immigrants on Angel Island, by Him Mark Lai is a collection
of the poems that was restored from the walls and barracks of the Angles Island. The author had
selected the sixty nine poems which were classified into different categories to show the history of
the immigration. The five section are The Voyage, The Detainment, The Weak Shall Conquer, The
Westerners, Deportees, Transients. Each of these sections includes the restored poems found in the
barrack and the oral histories from peoples who spend their time in the Island, Immigration
Interpreters, Immigration Inspectors.

Why Sonia Sotomayor Should Be Approved as Supreme Court...
President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court justice on May 26,
2009, making Sonia Sotomayor the first Hispanic female to be nominated for higher court.
Sonia Sotomayor was born on June 25, 1954. She is currently a federal judge on the U.S Courts
of Appeals for a Second Circuit. If nominated she will be replacing the retiring Justice David
Souter and she will also be the first Hispanic and the third female Justice. This will be a huge
milestone for the Hispanic community. Looking closely into Sotomayor qualification and
experience we can predict that she will most likely be approved by the Senate. Sonia Sotamayor

Amelie Cultural Differences
As I re watched the film, I noticed several cultural differences. Some of the cultural differences
included: details, where they live, visuals, sound effects (music), photos, and clothing.
This film includes many details, including a scene of a blue fly that was capable of flapping 70
beats a minute and landed in Montmartre. In a restaurant, the wind made two glasses dance on a
tablecloth, which led to show how Amelie was born. Those scenes weren t necessary, but in the
French culture they might have been because they value the littlest things. It also shows how life in
France is. Being in France, I noticed that many people go to the Cafe, where Amelie works, they
also use telephone booths, and they all seem to live in apartments. Throughout the film, I ... Show

From what I saw, art is really important to them, there are pictures of art in many places during
the film. I also noticed a lot of buildings and stairs. As I kept watching the film, I realized that
pictures are really important in their culture. Some examples include: Amelie taking pictures of
shaped clouds, Nino having an album of pictures that he finds, and Amelie finding a box that
included important objects such as pictures and other materials. The visual of Amelie taking
pictures of shaped clouds shows how imagination plays a role in this film. I also noticed how
important a garden gnome was to Amelie s father. The gnome represented Amelie s father s dream
of traveling. Soon, Amelie takes the gnome and sends it to other places of the world, her father is
sent pictures of the gnome traveling and soon decides to travel himself. Another cultural difference
is the music, which is very happy and sometimes even sounds romantic. Equally important, the
clothes that most women wear including Amelie are a skirt with a blouse or t shirt and many of
them have short hair. Lastly, this film didn t focus a lot on history, economics, or politics. The only
part I noticed where it talked about

The Life And Work Of Roger Corman
How I Made A Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime completely changes how
people view the industry of filmmaking, by providing the story of one man who battled against
the odds and inspired generations to come. The novel chronicles the life and work of Roger
Corman, a pioneer in the filmmaking industry. Filmmaking is a visual literature; just like how
novels can change a person s beliefs or perspectives, filmcan have a long lasting effect on the
audience it touches. Similarly, this is what Roger Cormanaccomplished with his movies. Although
he initially had a little money, experience, and support, Roger Corman s life has inspired and
challenged generations of people. Furthermore, this book proves Gregory Currie s belief that Great
Literature Makes Us Better by acting as a particularly apt teacher of moral[s] through widespread
inspiration (Currie).
The basis behind Currie s argument is that many people enjoy the hard won pleasures of
literature... [and] reap aesthetic rewards from their reading (Currie). In this case, Currie s
proposition can be directly supported by the lessons and values rewards imparted on the audience
through the description of Roger Corman s life. Although Corman had little to no money, he
continued to pursue his dream of filmmaking. The book begins by describing Corman s life
preceding his filmmaking career. When Roger was young, his family moved from Detroit to
Beverly Hills. Corman describes this experience, saying, I felt

The Law And Its Effect On Society
The law is something many people would associate as serious and unamusing. Mortimer
Zuckerman would fall into that category. In fact, Zuckerman felt so strongly about this matter
that he decided law was the exact opposite of sex; even when it was good, it was lousy.
Zuckerman remains the Chief Executive Officer of Boston Properties, worth over two and a
half billion U.S. dollars. A gentleman of such high status could not make such an assertion
without some sort of education regarding the matter at hand. The law is exactly the opposite of
sex. The law is not completed by any living thing, remains alone, is completely silent, fully
clothed, utterly boring and does not engage nor stimulate the brain. The word law stands for
Lousy, Annoying, and Woeful. The law calls to abandon all enjoyment, pleasure, and happiness
to sit in complete silence by yourself as punishment for living. People who practice this
profession are woeful creatures who despise life and all it has to offer. These odd creatures find
some sort of solace in being paid to sit in silence and reflect on how many monumentally corrupt
things there truly are in their lives. Their job being at the top of the list. Many may have sat in
silence for so long that they have lost their sense of sound all together. Their ears may be plugged
so full of wax and unhappiness that they cannot hear anything but the silence their career requires.
This means none of them have spouses because nothing talks more than a married

Recognizing and rewarding high performance is a key recommendation for any approach when managing any merit pay program (HRIS 2012). Merit pay is a compensation system where base pay increases and is determined by an individual s performance. Using a merit pay plan is a good way for an organization to reward high performance is one benefit when using merit pay programs. The first step in implementing or improving a merit pay program is to have a solid performance management program, and this is another way a merit pay program is beneficial. Merit pay is a way to be successful and effectively implement merit pay with a uplift in salaries, and this is a third way using a merit pay program is beneficial to an organization. There are some drawbacks when using merit pay programs, such as paying some employees more than others. If you pay high performing workers more than low performing employees, the high performers may stay, causing the low performers to complain or leave the organization. A second drawback in using merit pay program is that employees become less motivated if not paid to their satisfaction. For example, if employees feel they should be making more money for their performance, this causes them to have low self esteem, and want to find employment at other organization. The last drawback associated with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Too Much Television On Children And Technology Adults have been worried about their children watching too much TV since, well, forever. For decades, Americans had only one or two TVs in their home. Now a single household might have dozens of them around the home. But the times have changed and in actuality, we are all surrounded by screens nearly all the time from television, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and video games. The American Academy of Pediatrics claims that children spend an average of 7 hours a day on what it terms entertainment media, and that includes TVs, computers, phones, and other electronic devices. The AAP also says that excessive media use can lead to attention problems, school difficulties, sleep and eating disorders, and obesity. Are children spending too much time staring at screens? Should parents limit how much time children spend on technology? The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Society of Pediatrics state infants aged 0 2 years should not have any exposure to technology, 3 5 years be restricted to one hour per day, and 6 18 years restricted to 2 hours per day (AAP 2001/13, CPS 2010). Between 0 and 2 years, infant s brains triple in size, and continue in a state of rapid development to 21 years of age (Christakis 2011). Early brain development is usually determined by environmental stimuli, or lack thereof. Stimulation to a developing brain caused by the overexposure to technologies, such as cell phones, internet, tablets, TV, has been shown to be associated with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Asian Carp And The New Carp Over the course of the mid to late 20th century, five species of non native carp fish, collectively referred to as Asian carp , have been introduced to the United States either for aesthetic purposes, to supplement game fishing, or to help manage local pest species. Some of these carp species have escaped into America s waterways and proved to be prolific breeders and voracious feeders, out hunting and out breeding native species. As with any environmental issue, there exist many parties who have differing points of contention over this problem and many different solutions have been proposed to correct it. To resolve this issue will take a comprehensive analysis of the problem and an examination of the participants involved, their perspectives on Asian carp, and how the proposed solutions to this issue will affect them. Beginning in the 1830 s, five successive waves of foreign carp species; grass, common, silver, bighead, and black carp, were introduced to the United States to help improve the quality of agricultural ponds, but some of them subsequently escaped into the Midwestern river systems (Koel, 2000, Pg. 1). Of these species, the two most infamous are silver and bighead carp. Both species are filter feeders, and following their entry into the river systems in the eighties, they have been competing with native filter feeders for food (Sampson, 2008, Pg. 483). Asian carp grow in excess of five feet and can weigh upwards of 100 pounds. They are voracious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Gay People In North Carolina Yes, there are LGBTQ people in North Carolina. Contrary to popular belief from the previous governor Patrick McCrory and the general heteronormativity of the state, LGBTQ people go about their everyday lives in North Carolina. But while non straight people exist beyond Manhattan, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, they exist in a different, more suppressed manner. There are fewer pride rallies, brunches, and general gay outings, and that is why the mural of Brandy Alexander the drag queen, not the cocktail means so much to the North CarolinaLGBTQ community. Cities are and have been a mecca for queerpeople. It s a rite of passage, almost, to move to a city. You grow up in your small town, constantly dreaming of the big city, and then... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Encompassing the entire wall of a building, Brandy Alexander looks strong and daunting. With her chin held high and left arm extended, Brandy looks as if she is ready to go into battle; and she is. She is ready to continue the fight for LGBT rights. With an equality sign painted under her left eye as if it were an eye black strip or war paint, Brandy is ready for combat. The hand of justice tops off her scepter, and her pearl neckless appears to be blowing in the wind imagine Brandy standing on a crag, wind blowing against her, ready to lead her army into battle. A broken shackle falls from her left wrist, and her glamourous pearl necklace features an all gender bathroom logo, both implying a sense of owning her oppression. But most importantly, Brandy wears earrings with former Governor Patrick McCrory s face on them. As the ultimate expression of her ownership over the situation, Brandy does not let McCrory intimidate her, but rather she uses him as an accessory. Rather than acting as an intimidating force, McCrory is merely an accessory that Brandy Alexander chose to use. The earrings act as a blatant statement from the artists that the LGBTQ community will not be scared by or back down from McCrory and his laws. Swirling blues, yellows, and whites give the mural a sense of happiness and joy. Instead of using dark colors to represent the dismal situation, the piece focuses on the ... • 6. The Definition Of Social Equity In Public Administration Social equity was presented to public administration first by H. George Frederickson in the 1960s after the Standing Panel on Social Equity in Governance was created by the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) (Johnson, 2012). Social equity is the fourth pillar of public administration by the NAPA (Norman Major, 2011). According to the panel their definition of social equity is fair, just and equitable management of all institutions serving the public directly or by contract (Johnson, 2012). In Wooldridge, Gooden (2009) they state that the idea of social equity in public administration is inseparably linked to John Rawlss A Theory of Justice(1971). Rawls developed the principle of justice as fairness. Fairness is justice would mean that people have equal rights to basic liberty (Rawls, 1971). To be discussed will be comparison and differences between many author overtime that has touch social equity regarding its definition, challenges along with the overall conclusion. The fact that the use of these notions has evolved in different ways over time (Herrera, 2007) is why this is being mentioned. What is social equity Every author interprets and define social equity a little differently. Social equity issues, refers to the distribution of fairness. (Guy McCandless, 2012). Social equity is rooted in the idea that each person is equal and has inalienable rights. With America s being a blend of social, religious, economic, and political characteristics, the ... Comparing these cultures to each other, you can see that they are very different. For one the Ik culture don t have concern for family at all while the Pomo Indians think life is all about family but the Nayar Society didn t seem to think of themselves as family but as associates to each other to carry the generation on. From looking at the positive views on family, I would say that the Pomo Indians are the most caring culture out of the three cultures, and while the Ik may seem like a horrible culture, I would say that the Nayar Society is the worst as it seems like a disorganised and uncaring culture. When it comes to my culture, we believe that family is very, very important. We believe that you need your family to be there to support you through the good and bad times and to help you and train you as you grow up. • 8. Long-Term Consequences Of Children In The Culture Of... In today s society, children are immersed in the culture of competition. This can be seen in all aspects of children lifestyles: games, sports, classroom settings, etc. Competition can be healthy in moderation, but too often children are only taught to win. However, the long term consequences of such a competitive culture are seldom thought of by parents. Placing too much emphasis on winning can destroy a childs view on hard work and team play, as well as destroy self esteem and confidence later on in life. In our society, competition is not beneficial for kids and must be discouraged, or we risk raising a generation grown on false hope. Hard work and team play are often aspects of a child s life that are diminished with the overemphasis on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People argue that in order for our children to learn to succeed in life, we must train them from an early age. Matt Richtel s New York Times article mentions this. Many scholars agree that competition is necessary, ingrained and essential (Richtel, 2012). To some degree, this is true. We do need to train children to excel in all that they are capable of doing. However, if we were to allow for competition to be a part of the everyday lives of children, we must allow for it to occur only for self improvement. If we allow for competition, we must make it okay for them to lose. A platform for trial and error is necessary training. Sadly, not everyone has that mindset, and winning is the goal. We can t change everyone s mind about it, so we must work to discourage childhood competition altogether. In Competition Can Be a Positive Experience for Kids, Mark Cinelli analyzes the dynamics of competition, and states the type of competition that we need to see in Competition is a big part of our children s lives, and it s here to stay for a long time . . . We need to praise every effort by character, self esteem, a competitive spirit and a sense of fair play. I think we d all agree that if our children displayed all of the above attributes throughout their lives, we would be extremely proud parents. (Cinelli, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Susan B. Anthony And The Abolitionist Movement Susan B. Anthony devoted her life to the rights of women s labor, receiving equal pay, and leading the women s suffrage movement. She grew up in a home where politics was frequently discussed. Her family supported an end to slavery as part of the abolitionist movement. In her early years, she was a teacher and became involved in the temperance movement as well as the anti slavery movement. Because she was a woman, she was not allowed to voice her opinion. This became a motivator for her to become a woman s suffrage leader. A skilled, talented woman made a difference when she joined forces with Stanton. As mentioned earlier, Stanton and Anthony opposed the fourteenth and fifteen amendments for not liberating women. As Mayo states, she published The Revolution, a radical paper, edited by Stanton (1868 1870), and lectured for over six years to pay off its debt. (Rights for Women, para.3) She was arrested for voting in 1872. She led a woman s protest at the 1876 Centennial delivering a Declaration of Rights written by Stanton and Matilda Gage. She wrote and published, with Stanton and Gage the History of Woman Suffrage (1881 1885) (Mayo para. 5). Although she was arrested and it seemed like nothing came easy, she never gave up. Anthony was a hard working woman that rallied many in hopes of advancing women s rights. • 11. Elizabethan Pirates Essay Elizabethan Pirates Did you ever think that some pirates fought for their country? Contrary to what some might believe, Elizabethan pirates, or privateers, fought for Queen Elizabeth of England. Also, for various reasons they were called sea dogs and buccaneers. The privateers were actually encouraged by the government to pillage their enemies. Elizabethan privateers were enlisted and licensed by the government, were unified in their cause, focused more on capturing than destroying enemy ships, and were made famous through their victories. In the Elizabethan Era, England and Spain were in conflict due to their differences in religion. With the arrival of Queen Elizabeth, the official religion of England changed to Protestant (Religion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These pirates then became known as privateers because of their new alliances. A pirate will attack anybody, regardless of nationality, whereas a privateer has a license and will attack only the enemies of his/her country (Elizabeth s Sea Dogs). Another interesting fact about privateers is that they were unified in their cause. Regular pirates have little to no affiliation with each other, whereas all the privateers that Queen Elizabeth hired worked together to achieve the same goal. Because of this, they accomplished very large feats. If they hadn t worked together, winning the war would have been extremely difficult. The teamwork of the privateers is what intimidated the King of Spain and allowed them to severely damage the Armada (Sir Francis Drake). The unity of the privateers with the Royal English Navy also had a large impact on the war. If England was to win, teamwork between the Navy and the privateers was very important. If they hadn t gotten along, several battles could have been lost just because of arguments. Elizabethan privateers focused on capturing ships rather than destroying them. This way, they and Queen Elizabeth could profit from their victories. If the privateers had destroyed the ships, there would have been no gain at all for the English. So many aspects of my life have changed in the past year. One of the aspects that changed was my education. I used to go to Miami Dade college but was not that passionate about my major, so i would go to classes really late or not even show up at all. I was kinda lost and i picked a major that i really didnt wanna do. Now ive picked a major that im really excited. I enrolled into Keiser University and im doing really good in school right now. Another way my life changed i met the girl of my dreams. I am really in love with her and she makes my life so much better. Ive never had so much fun with someone but she makes me the happiest. The last thing that has changed in my life was my job. I used to work at a resteraunt where i only got paid $8.50 and i did so much work compared to the job now that i make $9.50 and dont do as much work. I also enjoy it much more. My life is the greatest it has ever been. Education i think is one of the most important things someone can get. Without education in this world i feel like it is really hard to get a good paying job. My life before i would barely wanna go to school because i hated the education and the major i picked. Poor mans copyright is when the artist puts their fixed tangible medium in an envelope with appropriate postage stamps and mails it back to themselves without opening it. This postmark creates proof of the creator and is the date of creation for the musical work. Why should an artist copyright an original work? Copyrighting a musical expression just ensures that an artist is the creator of that work. There are a couple of reasons why an artist should copyright their original works. The main one is the creator of a work wants to be able to protect his or her work. Also, financial gain from suing. There would not be any purpose in creating music without financial gain for some. Since mate selection is such an important aspect of any individual s life, it would make sense that it is an area that has been researched extensively. There are a number of mate selection theories in existence, but this paper will focus on looking at biosocial theory and equity theory specifically. • 15. The Importance Of Freedom In Journalism And The Freedom Of... As Americans, we are taught from childhood to internalize the importance of freedom and to sing the praises of the land of the free. Political rallies, presidential speeches, and Internet forums light up day after day with fierce debates over freedom of speech or religion or the right to bear arms, but one freedom most of us fail to prioritize as we should is one unique to developed countries yet absolutely crucial of a true democracy: freedom of the press. Journalists expose government corruption, systemic and societal injustices, business malpractices, human rights violations, and more truths that government and businesses would rather hide. Despite efforts to keep certain acts under wraps, it is imperative that citizens understand all motives and beliefs of those in power in order to be fully informed when fulfilling their civic duties of voting and partaking in political discourse. That is the media s job, yet we are entering an era where popular opinion of the media is ever declining and leaders encourage silencing the free press that brings to light these pivotal issues. In my future, I hope to use a Bachelor s or Master s degrees in Journalism and Political Science to reestablish the currently wavering honesty and integrity in some areas of journalism that contribute to dangerous anti media ideas. We need to protect our democracy by demanding honesty and transparency in government and big business, but this goal can never be achieved if our society responds to ... Evidence Based Practice (EBP) can be defined as the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about patient care (Sackett et al, 2000). Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is a practice which requires that decisions about health care are based on the best available, current, valid and relevant evidence and the decisions should be made by those receiving the care and those providing the care (Dawes M. et al, 2005). • 17. Notes On The Rise Ra Out Of The Horizon I chisel away at the limestone; I am writing on a tablet. It reads Rise Ra out of the horizon . I was ordered by Pharaoh Khafre to make this tablet, it will be soon used in a temple to honor the great god of the sun, Ra. Pharaoh Khafre worships Ra more than any other Pharaoh we have had in the past. He is trying to ensure that there is harmony between people and nature. He plans to build a great monument for us to worship the god Rain. A great pyramid is in the works of being built as well, this pyramid will be similar to his father Pharaoh Khufus and will be his final resting place. I am a scribe, meaning I know how to read and write in our language. My job is to inscribe temples, tablets or any other thing I am asked to. These letters I am writing are called hieroglyphics and we only use them when we talk to or about the gods, they are a religious alphabet we use to honor them. Our everyday writing is called hieratics and it is mainly used for business, administration and keeping records on papyrus, our form of paper, it is reed flattened out. I do enjoy my job; I am not dragging limestone for distances or slaving away building pyramids or temples for our pharaoh. You could say that I am of a higher social division. I am not a criminal nor am I severely poor, these people are our slaves. They break their backs doing hard manual labor for our Pharaoh. There is also a group of citizens that voluntarily do hard labor, these are not extremely poor but are not rich either. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Everyone here would always stop and talk about what is going on, no matter who you are. Such community does exist, but only in the small town of Grover s Corners, New Hampshire. The value and importance of community is shown in Our Town by Thornton Wilderusing repetition and pattern of events. A few important times this is shown is the play is when Emily and George s disagreements with each other help grow their relationship. When Howie Newsome greets neighbors while he delivers the milk across town is a significant part of Grover s Corners community. Emily s death is also meaningful to the community s connections to each other. The value of community is shown when Emily would repeatedly argue with George but their disagreements made their relationship better. One small disagreement between George and Emily happened on their way home from school one day: GEORGE. I don t mean the answers, Emily, of course not ... just some little hints ... EMILY. Oh, I think hints are allowed. So ah if you get stuck, George, you whistle to me; and I ll give you some hints. (29) In this passage, Emily s hesitation shows she unsure if she is willing to help George with his work. • 20. The Structural Transformation Of The Public Sphere... Literature Review Jurgen Habermas can be seen as one of the founders of the term and details the idea of refeudalization in their novel The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere in which he writes how the bourgeois public sphere eroded because of economic and structural changes. The boundaries between state and society blurred, leading to a kind of refeudalization of society. (Habermas, 1989). Essentially state and society became involved in each other s spheres and large non governmental organizations replaced the old institutions of the public sphere. Furthermore, where the public sphere takes on a feudal aspect is the process of politicians and organizations representing themselves before the voters. (Habermas, 1989). These ideas are then further explained in more contemporary contexts by Alain Supiot writing that primarily of the refeudalization of law but also ignorance of the organization of powers underpinning the government by laws is taking us back to government by men, that is, to feudal ways of hybridizing the public and the private. (Supiot, 2013). Then further clarifying that Western feudalism today is the dependency between people having a legal character where there are status differences and the dependent party may be granted possession, but it is burdened by the obligations to the benefit of the grantor. (Supiot, 2013). Supiot does however put forward the idea that refeudalization of law does not mean a return to the middle agesbut ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The second experiment produced results that showed this activation (found in the fusiform gyrus), was higher for normalized faces than scrambled faces or for houses. In the third experiment, the author found that this area responded higher for passive faces at different angles when the hair of the subject was concealed than for human hands. This study also showed that the fusiform face area responded just as highly to faces with hair present or concealed. Ultimately, the fusiform face area responds selectively to faces in a variety of cases: gray scale, front facing, two toned, three quarter view, and with hair concealed. The activation region was found in the fusiform gyrus and immediate surrounding areas, mainly lateralized in the right hemisphere. 4.How does the evidence support the author s arguments? The results of the first task (analyzing areas of the ventral pathway that responded significantly higher to faces), showed that there was one specific region that showed consistently higher activation for faces than for objects throughout every subject: the right fusiform gyrus. These results also showed opposite activation patterns for object viewing, providing a double dissociation for face and object recognition. This provides evidence that higher activation during facial recognition is not simply due to faces requiring a higher processing power than objects, but instead ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. New Atlantis By William Harvey London, in the seventeenth century, underwent a progressive epistemological shift. In this period, the intellectual paradigm slowly transitioned from a model wherein religious dogma, mysticism, and class structure were the progenitors of thought to a model wherein scientific empiricism informed discovery. Although there was a conflict between these ideological frameworks, we should not see this confrontation of epistemologies as an overt and adversarial crisis of thought. Rather, the people responsible for confronting the antique with the scientific often attempted to consolidate their ideologies with those ideologies they were subtly challenging; they attempted to act within the framework which they rejected. In this essay, we will explore this nearly contradictory sentiment by examining four scientific works: On the Motion of the Heart, by William Harvey, Micrographia, by Robert Hooke, New Atlantis and The Great Instauration, by Francis Bacon, and 153 Chymical Aphorisms, by Chr. Packe. These four texts emerged from three distinct modes of scientific inquiry: the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, depending on how the child is raised and treated throughout this stage, determines whether the child learns to trust the world and his surroundings to fulfill his needs. Erikson believed that although there are different challenges the individual must successfully master at each stage, these issues overlap with the issues of another level. This is because how one deals with the earlier challenges determines how one will resolve later challenges, as there is a connection between present patterns of thinking and feeling, and the earlier unresolved and/or resolved development issues. Going back to the example with the child, if he/she does not learn to trust in this stage, then trust will remain an unresolved issue throughout the subsequent stages of development. Erikson s theory is extremely important and significant in terms of understanding the growth and development of an individual. His theory helps to explain the levels of conflict that every individual must undergo, and the possibilities that may arise if the individual in unsuccessful and does not overcome the challenges that he/she is faced with. As stated in the example above, if the child did not learn to trust in the first stage, it will affect him in all the following stages, as he /she will continue to have a lack of trust in the world. • 38. The Safety Standards Of Mercury Mercury is extremely dangerous to humans due to its extreme conditions not suitable to human life. Missions to Mercury must be conducted with infallible safety standards to prevent incidents such as what has happened in the past. These safety standards must consider all possible circumstances in which measures must be taken. When doing missions on Mercury safety should be the number one priority. Before creating safety standards, it is important to first acknowledge issues and situations that has arisen in the past. Awhile back, a team of scientist were sent to complete a mission on Mercury. Accompanied with them was a robotthat went by the name of Speedy. Speedy was a multifunctional robot built to assist the scientist with whatever they needed. Speedy was especially useful against Mercuries harsh conditions. He was able to maneuver the surface where humans could not. Before arriving on Mercury, the team knew they would needselenium in order to repair their photo cell banks. These banks are important in keeping the base on Mercury from burning up. Speedy was capable of retrieving this selenium, but was the only one capable of doing so. This is because he was the only robot sent with the team. The safety flaw in only having one robot to complete a life or death task is enormous. Standards at the time did not take into account flaws in technology. On the day of the mission, Speedy was sent out to retrieve the selenium. The scientist found it rather strange that he had not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Trenches Of Birdsong ( 1993 ) Examine the ways Faulks presents superstition among characters in the trenches in Birdsong (1993). Superstition as an excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural is often associated with perilous endeavours, and a psychological need to latch on to a mechanism to allow hope for the preservation of the fragile human condition. This systematic and illogical belief in the supernatural is extensively prevalent throughout Faulks novel, during the linear storyline of Stephen and other orbital characters it is referenced through not only irrational fears but additionally rituals of extispicy. Faulks expedites the process of firm belief among the characters during life on the front line, which is particularly highlighted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This thus deepens the contrast to the final section of the sentence which informs the reader that Weir is fascinated by the divination taking place. Using the adjective fascinated precisely aligns with imagery associated with a childlike fixation upon something, and so it can be extrapolated that in this case the object of the subject s curiosity is extispicy. That Weir can stomach such a ritual and remain engaged and fascinated suggest that the character truly believes that this can determine his future with a degree of useful accuracy. This barbaric practice and all its derivatives collectively indicate the desperation of the soldiers and how they are left with no option but to cling on to any form of hope they can muster. As well as an air of hope, an underlying sense of ridicule and even mockery is brought to bear through Ellis response to the ritualistic predictions, remarking that Stephen and Weir should be ashamed of themselves . A depth of ignominy is acknowledged in this light, which evinces that certain soldiers believe such practice to be nonsense and that those who practice it should be embarrassed. Specific phrasing as you should be ashamed stipulates an understanding that such behaviour was commonplace, as the characters are not ashamed, however it is of Ellis opinion that they should be. This would suggest that Shakespeare is using Shylock as more than a symbol of Jewishness . In this piece of coursework I will be examining mainly how sympathetic or unsympathetic the various versions seem to be and how each Director has succeeded in making the character of Shylock worthy of Shakespeare s realism. Jews were traditionally viewed as outsiders and were not citizens. Christians as far back as the 11th century could not lend money without interest and many Jews earned a living from this profession as they could not join the artisan guilds. As they became their own debt collectors they soon became the target of resentment. A myth was born; with which Shakespeare s audience would have been familiar, of ritual murder or blood libel that Jews would kill adult Christians. It is to this myth to which Shakespeare seems to allude in the pound of flesh incident in this scene. Shakespeare is original in showing us the extent to which Shylock is oppressed by Christians surrounding him and it is through this that Shakespeare succeeds in drawing out sympathy from his audience. Analysis of Act IV scene 1 In the text of Act IV scene 1 before we meet Shylock he is described as a stony adversary, an inhuman wretch, incapable of pity, void and empty from any dram of mercy . Antonio describes Shylock s spirit as being full of tyranny and rage . When Shylock enters
