What is it about ?
 A cycloconverter (CCV) converts a constant voltage, constant frequency AC
waveform to another AC waveform of a lower frequency by synthesizing the output
waveform from segments of the AC supply without an intermediate DC link
 Invented in 1930’s
4/9/2016Kashyap Mandaliya
2
Where it was first applied ?
 In Germany, where 3-phase 50hz supply was converted to a single phase ac suppy
at 16 2/3 for railway traction.

Modes of Cycloconverter
 Blocking Mode:
 Depends on the polarity, one of the converters is enabled at a time.
 Circulating Current Mode:
 Both the converters operate at all time in this case.
 An intergroup reactor (IGR) is needed.

Types of Cycloconverter
 Matrix cycloconverter
 Single –phase-to –single-phase cycloconverter.
 Three –phase-to-three-phase cycloconverter.
 Single-phase-to-three-phase cycloconverter.

Applications
 Cement mill drives
 Ship propulsion drives
 Rolling mill drives
 Ore grinding mills
 Mine winders
 Synchronous Motors
 Variable- speed, constant-frequency{VSCF} power generation for aircraft 400 Hz power
supplies.

11
Advantages
 No intermediate DC state is required for AC-AC conversion.
 Extremely attractive for large power, low speed drives.
 Capable of power transfer in either direction between source and load.
4/9/2016Kashyap Mandaliya
12
Limitations
 Large number of thyristors are required.
 The output frequency is limited to one-third of the input frequency.

13
Conclusion
Cyclocnverters are basically used in the industry for ac-to-ac conversion. With
Recent device advances, power forms of cycloconversions are being developed.
In conclusion, cycloconverters are very vital especially to factory machines
that need ac-to-ac conversion where it is best applied.
