POPULAR CULTURE
• “Popular culture” was
coined in the 19th century.
• “Popular” refers to what
has gained popularity,
regardless of its style and
discrimination.

• Popular culture is the set of practices,
beliefs, and objects that embody the
most broadly shared meanings of a
social system.
• It includes media objects,
entertainment and leisure, fashion and
trends, and linguistic conventions,
among other things.

culture categories are:
entertainment (such as
film, music, television
and video games),
sports, news (as in
people/places in the
news), politics, fashion,
technology, and slang.

• From the moment we're
born, popular
culture surrounds us and
influences us.
• It's the beliefs and practices that
groups of us have in common.
• You see pop culture play out in
the movies and shows we
watch, the art, comics, and
books we read, the toys and
video games we play with, and
the clothes we wear.

GEndER disCRiminATiOn in POPULAR CULTURE
• Discrimination is based on misunderstandings and outmoded
ways of thinking.
• The systematic inequalities suffered by women constitute
discrimination.
Example: Super heroes are men. Women always expect to
rescue.
• Men always have more power than women and women always
need to men’s power.
• There are stereotypes and discrimination against women in film
industries which are part of popular culture.
