GENDER IDENTITY:
Means how a person views
himself or herself in terms of
gender.
Inward experience
GENDER ROLES:
Our culture shapes our gender
roles- expectations of how men
and women are supposed to
behave.
Outward expression

Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 3
WhAT Is A GENDER sTEREOTypE?
A stereotype is an oversimplified
image (or) idea of a specific type
of person or thing.
Stereotype represents the
opinion among members of a
certain group about other
groups.
Gender stereotyping is defined
as the beliefs humans hold about
the characteristics associated
with males and females.

hOW MEDIA DEfINEs MAlE AND fEMAlE TO bE?
Media defined how
females and males
should look and act.
Stereotype plays a huge
role in it.
17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 6
It defines standard male
to be masculine, to be
dominant, physically fit
with abs and handsome.
It defines standard women to be
feminine, soft, pretty , treated as
property, objectified, should be
submissive thin have large breasts.
17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 7
OBJECTIFICATION
 Objectification accurse when people are
viewed as objects existing solely for the
pleasure of the viewer, rather than as agents
capable of actions.
 The person being objectified often is reduced
to body parts such as breasts, genitalia,
muscle, curves, buttocks and hair.
 The person is no longer human but
commodified- turned into a market
commodity 17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 8
17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 9
SELF OBJECTIFICATION
Self objectification accurse when
people internalize the objectifier’s
view of their body and
“participate in their own
objectification by seeking to
exert a limited power linked
to their ability to attract the
gaze of others”.
17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 10
COMMODIFICATION
It is the selling of cultural sexual or
gender difference in a way that
supports institutionalized
discrimination.
Women’s bodies are constantly used
in ads to sell things. They are turned
into thing and objectified.
17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 11
SEXUALIZATION
Media has wrongly manipulated that a
person’s value comes only from his or
her sexual appeal or behaviour.
Instead of holding a person’s standard
for his characteristics, he is held in high
standard for his physical attractiveness
and for being sexy.
A person is sexually objectified(i.e)
made into a thing for other’s sexual
use, rather than seen as a person with
capacity for independent action and
decision making. 17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 12
sEXUAlIZATION IN TElEVIsION
A lot of television and
movies exploit sexuality
and sexualize character
especially women, but not
all of them rely heavily on
that
Example : tomb raider,
resident evil.
17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 13
MAlE AND fEMAlE pORTRAyED IN TElEVIsION
Even television and videos targeting
infants and toddlers deal with
gender stereotypes.”
Male characters are depicted as
strong, emotionally restrained, risk-
taking leaders
Female characters are agreeable,
virtuous, demure, and primarily
concerned with their physical
appearance.

ChANGEs
To show women in
positive role modeling
and change women’s self
image.
To portray women as
achieving self realization
through their careers.
17-06-2021
Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 16
SEXUALIZATION IN MAGAZINE
A lot of magazine have
sexualized images on the cover
of women.
Image of women with little
clothes or that focus on clothing
you must wear, or things you
need as well as article about best
stars and who wore it better
because it is the end of the world
if 2 individuals in the public eye
were the same outfit, especially
to the same event.

A lot of magazine have sexualized images on the cover of women. Images of
woman with little clothing, or focus on the clothing you must wear. Media and
magazine are teaching people and children that these things are important
instead of actual important things going on in this world.
Look at the covers
Being healthy is looking “Hot” from behind? Really? Why do we need to be
sexy?... It measures people’s worth only in terms of their appearance. 17-06-2021

pORTRAyAl Of WOMEN IN fIlM
• Violence against women, stereotyped image as house keepers,
poor venders, etc.,
• Unimportant persons in traditional value system
• Problems of women are never depicted unless it is too horrific
• As cases like child marriage, abuse, sexual harassment, domestic
violence in the past years helped to create a constitution on it
• Despite rules the crimes are still surviving, where on the other
hand as women empowerment, women acquire Various jobs in
every means
• They are considered as weaker sex , as we all know as like so
kind and gentle , so caring and can never be cruel

INflUENCE Of MEDIA ON GENDER
• Mass media is considered to be the most enveloping and one of
the most prevailing that throws light upon the role of men and
women
• Mostly impracticable, stereotypical and restrictive observations
• Women are under represented which says they are trivial and
unrecognized
• Stereotypical ways that replicate and maintain communally
approved views on gender
• Relationship between men and women that highlights
conventional roles and regularize crime and violence against
women

Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 47
CONClUsION
Media, magazine, advertisements, cartoons and journals
are teaching people and children about gender and its
role
The most affected due to gender stereotypes women
than men.
By including more female roles in the media including
books movies and television series and videogames we
can avoid portraying gender stereotypes that ultimately
form society’s perception of gender roles
