TYPES OF PIGS - CLEANING PIGS
( BRUSH & CUP )
THERE ARE A VARIETY OF TYPES INCLUDING THOSE MADE
ENTIRELY OF POLY-URETHANE, AND THOSE MADE OF STEEL
WITH URETHANE CUPS TO SEAL THE PIG ON THE PIPE WALL.
THE URETHANE PIGS COME IN GENERAL TYPES:
HARD
URETHANE (THE CONSISTENCY OF RUBBER),
AND THE SOFTER
POLY-URETHANE (CALLED POLY PIGS, BEING THE CONSISTENCY
OF FURNITURE CUSHIONS). THE POLY PIG IS THE SOFTEST PIG,
AND BECAUSE OF ITS FLEXIBILITY IS USUALLY THE FIRST PIG RUN
THROUGH A PIPELINE.
THEY CAN BE COATED IN HARDER
URETHANE TO PROTECT THE SOFT POLY-URETHANE FROM
RIPPING OR ABSORBING FLUID IN THE PIPELINE.
THEY CAN ALSO BE MOLDED WITH WIRE BRUSHES IMBEDDED TO
INCREASE CLEANING CAPABILITY.
GAUGE, CALIPER AND INERTIAL TOOLS.
THE SIMPLEST GEOMETRY TOOL IS ROUND GAUGE PLATES OF DIFFERENT
SIZES ATTACHED TO A PIG.
DENTS, DEFORMATIONS AND TIGHT BENDS WILL DEFORM THE GAUGE
PLATE OF THE CORRESPONDING SIZE OF THE DEFECT.
ALTHOUGH THE GAUGE PIG CAN DETERMINE THE MINIMUM BORE AND
BEND RADIUS OF A PIPELINE, IT DOES NOT LOG THE LOCATION.
CALIPER TOOLS LOG THE INSIDE BORE OF THE PIPELINE AND HAVE AN
ODOMETER TO LOG THE DISTANCE TO DEFECTS.
INERTIAL TOOLS CONSIST OF SOPHISTICATED INERTIAL GUIDANCE
SYSTEMS, WHICH LOG THE 3-D PROFILE OF THE PIPELINE.
MAGNETIC FLUX LEAKAGE INSPECTION
TOOLS.
THESE ARE THE OLDEST AND MOST COMMON
INSPECTION TOOLS, WHICH MAGNETIZE THE
PIPE WITH A STRONG MAGNETIC FIELD AND
THEN MAP THE MAGNETIC FIELD.
THE MAGNETIC FIELD INCREASES AND
DECREASES IN STRENGTH ACCORDING TO THE
WALL THICKNESS AND HARDNESS OF THE
STEEL.
THESE TOOLS ARE OFTEN RUN EVERY THREE TO
FIVE YEARS TO MONITOR GROWTH OF
CORROSION AND NEW MECHANICAL DAMAGE ON
THE PIPELINE.
ULTRASONIC INSPECTION TOOLS.
THIS IS THE MOST ADVANCED AND EXPENSIVE
INSPECTION METHOD, CAPABLE OF DETECTING
SMALL CORROSION PITS (<0.1” DIAMETER, AND
WITH WALL LOSS OF <10%), CRACKS
(HYDROGEN-INDUCED CRACKING, STRESS-
CORROSION CRACKING, AND CRACKS IN
WELDS), LAMINATIONS, AND SEVERAL OTHER
MILL DEFECTS AS WELL AS MECHANICAL
DAMAGE.
SOME UT TOOLS USE THE PIPELINE PRODUCT AS
A COUPLENT BETWEEN THE PIPE WALL AND
TRANSDUCER, AND THEREFORE MUST BE
CALIBRATED TO THE PRODUCT AND
TEMPERATURE OF EVERY RUN.
RADIO TRANSMITTERS
RADIO TRANSMITTERS ARE OFTEN ATTACHED TO A PIG
ENABLING A TRACKER TO LOCATE IT AT ANY TIME.
BECAUSE PIPELINE PIGS OFTEN FIND BUCKLES OR
OTHER RESTRICTIONS IN PIPELINES, THEY OFTEN
BECOME STUCK.
A STUCK PIG CAN ACT LIKE A CORK IN A BOTTLE TO
GREATLY REDUCE OR ENTIRELY STOP THE FLOW OF
THE PRODUCT THROUGH THE PIPELINE.
UTILIZING TRANSMITTERS ALLOWS A STUCK PIG TO BE
SUCCESSFULLY LOCATED WITH A RECEIVER, AND
ALLOWS YOU TO MAKE QUICK, COST-SAVING
DECISIONS TO REMOVE THE PIG.

THEY CAN BE COATED IN HARDER URETHANE TO PROTECT THE SOFT POLY-URETHANE FROM RIPPING OR ABSORBING FLUID IN THE PIPELINE. THEY CAN ALSO BE MOLDED WITH WIRE BRUSHES IMBEDDED TO INCREASE CLEANING CAPABILITY. GAUGE, CALIPER AND INERTIAL TOOLS. SOME UT TOOLS USE THE PIPELINE PRODUCT AS A COUPLENT BETWEEN THE PIPE WALL AND TRANSDUCER, AND THEREFORE MUST BE CALIBRATED TO THE PRODUCT AND TEMPERATURE OF EVERY RUN.
