The Theme OfThe Death Of Ivan Ilyich By Leo Tolstoy
True Happiness
The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy reveals the harsh reality of many members of the upper class
society. Ivan, a man that seems to have a perfect life, is a prime example of how climbing economic
and social ladders does not guarantee one s happiness. Ivan has a lucrative career, a nice house, and a
seemingly happy family. What more can he ask for, right? Contrary to widespread belief, Ivan is a
very unhappy man. He spends most of his time in his office, working, to keep his distance from his
family primarily from his demanding wife. Ivan is later struck ill after an accident that he thought was
only minor. As Ivan come to face the reality that he is indeed dying, he reflects on his life. Upon his
reflection, Ivan realizes that he has not lived the happiest life. Ivan s life manifests the reality of the
aristocratic type, who are often materialistic, shallow, self centered, and lacking in empathy and
compassion.
Ivan, like many others in his ranking are known for their crass materialism. As stated in the text,
having received money from his father for his equipment Ivan Ilyich ordered himself clothes at
Scharmer s, the fashionable tailor, hung a medallion inscribed respice finem on his watch chain, took
leave of his professor and the prince who was patron of the school (Tolstoy 747). Ivan is fixated on
impressing others with his fancy and expensive clothing. He also lives in a typical home like other
people of his status. Ivan lives his life to others

The Disproportionate Number of African-American Males...
The disproportionate number of African American males incarcerated within the United States is a
difficult social dilemma that needs to be more fully understood and addressed. This paper will explore
the mass incarceration of African American men. The paper will look into the prevalence, causes,
consequences, and offer solutions to this crisis. Specifically, seeking to find what factors have created
such high levels of criminal justice control for African American males, and explore the impact on the
family and community.
Incarceration is immense in the United States. Since the 1980s, the United States has experienced a
massive increase in incarceration. The overall rate has increased from 139 prisoners per hundred
thousand US ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, since the 1980s there has been the initiation of privatization of prisons, in the United States.
Today, for profit companies operate 264 correctional facilities, housing almost 99,000 inmates (Glans,
2011). The two largest are Correction Corporations of America (CCA) and the GEO Group, which
together combined for a capacity of 129,000 prisoners. According to Think progress, in 2010
Corrections Corporation of America and GEO Group made over 2.9 billion in revenue (Sanchez,
2011). Equally important, these companies exert influence on public policy, in order to fashion the
marketplace environment (i.e. more prisoners/African American males) required to increase its
businesses. This is done through lobbying politicians, direct campaign contributions, and political
networking.
Most economists would characterize incarceration as a public good. In contrast most racial minorities,
in particular African American males, would consider the business of incarceration, the laws that lead
to incarceration and the way the law are enforced as biased. The racial minorities in the United States,
particularly the African American male, have come to understand this as racial profiling. The term
profile initially was linked

Compare And Contrast The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
Following the crowd can have disastrous consequences is something both first they came by Martin
Niemoller and The lottery by Shirley Jackson have in common. But for different reasons. Both stories
are different but are also the same. Both stories share the same theme but for different reasons. So
these two stories have a lot in common but somethings that are different, so in this essay I will talk
about how they are the same and also different.
Some ways that The Lottery and First they came are the same is that they both share the same theme.
For example, they both share the theme that they both have disastrous consequences from following
the crowd. For instance, in the lottery Tessie follows the crowd by participating in the lottery with
everyone else. And in First they came martin followed the crowd by not speaking up. The two
characters not speaking up led to their death. Which is something both stories had in common.
Another way that you can compare both stories is that both of the characters didn t stand up for what s
right when they should have. For instance, in the poem First they came in lines 1, 3, and 4 it says and I
did not speak out so this means he did not speak out for other people. But when he got called he
expected someone to speak out instead. In the story The Lottery Tessie did not speak out about how
the bad The Lottery was. For example, the entire story Tessie didn t say the lottery was a bad idea until
she was chosen to get stoned. For instance,

Do You Speak American Summary
Do You Speak American Discussion The PBS presentation of Do You Speak American , hosted by
Robert MacNeil, seeks to explore the rich diversity of the blending of cultures in the United States
(US) through a study of dialects. Even with their multi segment series, the producers were only able to
briefly discuss a small portion of the vast experience which is our country. As a family history
researcher, I found that the brief discussion of Pidgen, Gullah, and Geechee most interesting. Gullah,
Geechee, and Pidgen are considered languages evolved from the African Americans slaves brought to
this country. While searching for more information about these dialects, I discovered that the term
Pidgin is not a good description for any dialect (Thompson, Pidgin Languages ). ... Show more content

Irene Thompson on her webpage referred to Pidgin as the on the Spot languages ( Pidgin Languages ).
She further explained that when no common language existed between the two groups a means of
communication developed from a primary language blended with one or more local languages. Since
the Spanish, French, English, Dutch, and Portuguese were major colonial powers, their languages
were generally the source for many of the Pidgin languages. A quick check on the internet indicates
that there are Pidgins not only developed from English and African languages, but also between
English and Native American, Eskimo Icelandic, Yokohama (Japanese), and Taimyr (Russian).
Spanglish is a blend of English and Spanish, just as Chadian Arabic is a mixture of French makes up
Chadian Arabic. Because these are rudimentary means to communicate, Pidgins have a low prestige
with linguists. Pidgin is also sometimes referred to as

Asian American Self Regulation
Similarly, Iyengar and Lepper (1999) examined the cultural differences on children s self regulation.
They compared European American and Asian American on their self regulation. The participants
could either make their own choices on the features of the task or assigned by their authority figures or
peers. They found that European American were less motivated when they were doing the task that
was assigned by someone else. In contrast, Asian American preferred to the task that was chosen by
their trusted peoples more. This suggested that the level of self regulation were different between
European American and Asian American.
Different cultures have different practices of teaching children. These differences cause a discrepancy
in the way of self regulation. Hence, cultural factors may predict children s ability to self regulate.
Human beings are social animals and easily influenced by the surrounding environment. As mentioned
before, newborn infants direct experiences are limited, so their interactive caregivers and the
environment mainly affect their self regulations.
To illustrate, Schunk and Zimmerman (2007) proposed that children could learn self regulation

preschoolers from 60 families. The research was held in both home and classroom settings. They used

children whose parents responses were more positive, had a better relationship with peers and were
more socially competent. Instead, children whose parents responses were more negative, they
displayed a negative emotion to peers. They suggested that children observed how their parents
reacted and they reacted in the same way in similar situations. The research showed that children
learnt to self regulate their emotion through social

Dual Immersion Benefits
The United States is a country built by immigrants who speak more than one language. Being
bilingual has many benefits that vary from traveling with ease all through having a brain that can
multitask faster. In the past decade many schools in California, as well as other states, have started a
program called the dual immersion or something of that nature in which they have a class that is in
another language, usually Spanish, and they teach the kids all the required material in that other
language. The Dual Immersion program is something that should be instated into more schools,
specifically in the bay area, because of the diversity seen here.
The duel immersion program has been shown to benefit the students in numerous ways; just being ...

A solution to these problems would be for the school to have the duel immersion classes do
fundraisers to help get money into their program. These fundraisers/fairs could be cultural events to
help educate the kids of different cultures and communities in the Latin world. This could not only
benefit the duel immersion classes but anyone that would show up to the fundraiser, as they would be
learning about the culture that the classes chose for that particular fundraisers/fair, with the money the
program makes from this it can afford to contract more teachers to help out, and give these kids the
benefits they deserve. Although it will be time consuming and there might need to be a lot of parents
to help out, the benefits outweigh these small setbacks. Having more teachers can give the program
the chance to have smaller classes in which the teachers can have more one on one with the kids so
that they each get the right amount of attention they need and deserve. More teachers can also mean
that the school can extend the program and give more kids the chance to be accepted into the duel
immersion program giving them a chance to better their education. The duel immersion program can
also have more fieldtrips in which they could

The Most Controversial and Debated Issue of Abortion
Abortion One of the most controversy issues that have had many Americans debating over the years is
abortion. But why so much controversy? Well to start with we have to understand what abortion is.
According to the Oxford dictionary, abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most
often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. There are also 2 types of abortions. The first
one is Therapeutic abortion, which the baby is aborted for the safety of the mother, and elective
abortion, in which the abortion is performed due to a choice that the mother has made for an unborn
child. In other words, abortion is the end or the expulsion of a fetus from the uterus by natural causes
or by clinical methods before it is able to survive independently.
Since the past 60 years after the famous Roe v Wade case was passed by the Supreme Court, many
Americans have being against and for abortion. This decision led to the formation of two groups the
anti abortion and the pro choice. Anti abortion are known as pro life people or groups and the pro
choice are those who want to legalize abortion. What really happened in the Roe v Wade case? First
we have to look at the time line of abortion. In the mid 1800s states began to pass laws that made
illegal abortion. As a consequence many women were dying because around those years 1800s, any
surgical procedures were risky and put life in danger (Time Line of Abortion.) Also the Medical
Association argued that abortion was

National Guard Analysis
I think that you make some great points. It was interesting to read about the unique challenges facing
the reserve component and National Guard. I have been active component my entire career, and I had
given little thought to the other side. After reading this, I agree that bringing the reserve and National
Guard components with us into this new realm of tactics may pose a daunting challenge. However,
operating in these conflicts that present us with complex threat rich environments should primarily be
the realm of the active component. It is probably best to leave these operations to the units that have
the time and resources to effectively train for them. I believe it is likely, that these force on force
operations will not last as long as the operations we re used to. Hopefully within weeks, our DOD
partners can secure air supremacy and alleviate the need for such extreme tactics and procedures. This
will allow other units to fly in support of other operations without the need to be extremely proficient
in the latest tactics. The National Guard and reserve components will be challenged to train to
proficiency, but hopefully in these types of conflicts they will be able to operate in their intended
function in a secondary, and supplementary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the aircraft far more easily than threat reaction. Each resource has its purpose, and the AVCATT is
perfectly suited to train ASE and threat related tactics. It s up to us as leaders and influential aviators

The Theory Of A Management Theory
A management theory is a collection of different ideas that are used to outline the general rules for
how a business or organization will manage itself (Business Dictionary, n.d.). Every organization uses
management or managerial theories as the foundation in which they use to implement, help increase
productivity, and service quality (Hawthorne, n.d.). An organization doesn t use just one theory or
concept when implementing their strategies but actually they use a combination of theories that work
best for their workplace, purpose and workforce (Hawthorne, n.d.). It turns into a mixture of different
theories that is blended for exactly what the organization needs. Not many organizations are going to
openly publish what managerial theories they use to keep their company going. It s not good to show
your hand of cards to your competitors. It only makes you weaker and they know what your game
plan is. So as an internal employee and based off what I know about the organization I work for, I m
going to analyze and theorize on the approach that State Farm takes based on what I know about their
internal culture and business strategies. State Farm has five different lines of business; property and
casualty insurance, life and health insurance, annuities, mutual funds, and banking products (State
Farm, 2015). State Farm was built on a collection of shared values that includes; quality service and
relationships, mutual trust, integrity, and financial strength (State Farm, 2015).

The Train Car As A Symbol Of The Extermination
Regularly occurring within a historical narrative is the prominence of non textual documentation
through the expression of symbols, iconography, and emotional memory. Inherently representational,
symbols are used to add a dimension in to a narrative. In the case of the Holocaust, symbols are used
to materially express the nearly unfathomably reality of its events. But, what do we do with often
emotionally charged perceptions of history? Symbols can be used as evidence, and as a way to
connect the past to the present commemorating the time period in which they encapsulate. But
symbols are culturally created, as objects are assigned a meaning often during but more importantly
after events have passed. In the case of the Holocaust, the train ... Show more content on

With the acquisition of new territory the number of Jews under Nazi control increased dramatically by
the summer s end of 1941. The Jewish Problem no longer became geographically confined to Reich
but rather became a pan European wide crisis. The policy of territorial relocation of Jews became
unfeasible. Additionally, despite the success of the Einsatzgruppen shootings there were simply few
too many men to eradicate the growing number of Jews. It was during this critical stage approximated
between July and December 1941 that Hitler abandoned previous plans of emigration and mobile
killings to that of a complete extermination of Jews from the entire continent of Europe. In order to do
so, Jews would be deported to six centrally located extermination camps in occupied Poland;
Maidanek, Belzec, Auschwitz Birkenau, Chelmo, Sobibor, and Treblinka. It is from this moment the
train becomes vital in the eradication of European Jewry.
In order to acquire trains the Nazis arranged within the Reich the use of the Reichsbahn, the German
national railway. For trains companies beyond the Reich, Nazi bureaucrats negotiated with European
governments to aid in the deportations. Once compliant, Jews from across Europe would be

Game Analysis: Undertale (2015)
In Undertale the combat system is very unique in comparison to other games by being a mix of a
Shoot em up game and a turn based RPG. Once a player enters combat through a random encounter in
the overworld they are greeted with a screen showing the enemies sprite and at the bottom of the
screen 4 different options for them to pick; fight, act, item and mercy. Once it is the enemy s turn to

The game has a simple pixel art style which works quite well as it is meant to resemble a game that
would be for the NES or SNES. The characters in battle are always in black and white with a simple
black background which as a design choice works quite well as it doesn t distract the player from
dodging the enemies attacks and makes sure there s no way they can mistake any background element
for an attack they must dodge.
The enemy designs in the game are very unique and interesting, often representing some kind of
character trope, for example there is an enemy in the game named Aaron that is a horse with a
mermaid s tail that is obsessed with his muscles. When Aaron attacks the player, the player must move
out of the way from 2 arms on the side of the box that come up from the bottom. Every monster in the
game has specialised attacks like this, for example there is an enemy that has an obsession with
cleaning and his attack is water droplets flowing out from the middle of the screen that the player has
to avoid. This is a good design decision as it adds depth and intrigue to the characters in an extremely
simple way which will make the player interested to see what other attacks the monsters

King Batharious The King
Once in the far away mystical land of Boven Athar, there lived a wise and compassionate king, his
caring and honest queen, and his two wonderful children. This tale is not about them however, but
rather the king s champion Batharious the brave, who at a young age was determined to become the

Unfortunately, this blessing was double sided, for this had awoken the ire of Arcygeamos, the twin

Critical Aspects Of The Education System
One of the most critical aspects of the education system is the assessment of pupils learning. Biggs
Tang (2011) determine that assessment is the senior partner in the instructional process. Get it wrong,
and everything else collapses (page 195 7). Assessment is one of the most important aspects of
teaching and learning, it ensures that student learning is checked and conclusions are made, to put it
simply, assessment shows how well pupils have learned what they were supposed to, and it is the only
feasible way to check if learning outcomes have been achieved or not. Throughout this essay I will be

In 1998, under Margaret Thatcher s government, the Education Reform Act was put into place. This
brought into play compulsory tests for our 7, 11 and 14 year olds. In Scotland, Wales and Northern
Ireland however, SATs for 7 year olds have been abolished, the government has realised children at 7
were much too young to be put under the pressure of tests. When children reach 11 they sit their year 6
SAT s and these results are used in league tables to compare schools. These results can be very
negative for the schools, teachers, and pupils involved. Again this is very different in Scotland, Wales
and Northern Ireland where the year 6 Sat s league tables have been abolished. Why is it that England
is so out of kilter with the rest of the United Kingdom?
In 2003, the QCA asked primary school teachers how long they spent on average each week preparing
children for their year 6 sat s. Shockingly they found that 10 hours a week was spent preparing
children for the end of year SATs and between Christmas and May, schools spend nearly 50% of their
teaching time coaching children. This leaves very little time to teach anything other than the topics
needed to pass the tests. Pupils become very demotivated and stressed with the pressure of failure.
This was shown quite movingly when the BBC Panorama team interviewed a year 6 student, the 11
year old told interviewers: I m really scared about my SATs, the head teacher came and talked to us

Friction Stir Welding And Artificial Neural Networks
1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND Friction stir welding ( FSW) and Artificial neural
networks (ANN) are two well known approaches in their respective field. FSW is a well known
method in material sciences and ANN in computer science. The aim is to combine these two
approaches to get some important results. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a novel method of joining
materials in solid state. It was invented by the Welding Institute (TWI) in 1991. It was initially applied
for joining aluminium and later expanded its domain for joining similar and dissimilar alloys.
Basically in FSW a specially designed rotating cylindrical tool that comprises of shoulder and pin is
used. The pin of the rotating tool is plunged into the sheet material and the shoulder comes into
contact with the surface of sheet, and then traverses in the desired direction. The contact between the
rotating tool and the sheet generate heat which softens the material below the melting point and with
the stirring caused by the pin, the material within the processed zone undergoes intense plastic
deformation yielding a dynamically recrystallized fine grain microstructure. Artificial Neural
Networks (ANN) is a network of simple processing elements (neurons) which exhibits complex
behavior, determined by the connections between the processing elements and element parameter.
Each neuron is connected to other neurons by means of directed communication links, each with an
associated weight. The weight represents

How The Film Industry Has A Huge Budget For The City Over...
PART 2 CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing Oscar Wilde, 1890
Again, my concern started with a personal experience. In 2014, I was working as an Experience
Designer for Universal Pictures NBC International Ltd. .
The film industry has a huge budget to spend on the building of visual artefacts. However, I was quite
shocked by the squandering of resources I witnessed. There was no care or awareness of sustainability.
Also, I expected designers and production to work much more closely together, which would have
prevented much waste in the first place. Yet, the film industry being as hierarchical as it is, production
never got back to me.
According to the London Data store,
London is already the third busiest city in filmmaking in the world, behind LA and New York. This
booming industry has brought £770m of investment to the city over the last four years.
8. London Datastore greater London authority (2015), [accessed 6 May 2016].
I have always been fascinated by transforming materials into something magical. Yet most of the time
my task was to transform the very cheapest materials into a luxuriously looking illusion.
Obviously as a designer one aims to make the best of available resources in the most efficient way.
But ever working quicker and faster and thus taking a toll on quality, made me feel uncomfortable. I
felt trapped in a Kleenex society (source?) a disposable product which we buy, use and throw

Success Through Organizational Development Essay
Success through Organizational Development
BUS 370: Organizational Development
Heather Strouse
June 27, 2011
Success through Organizational Development Organizational development is a learning tool that can
be utilized not only for professional success but for personal success in life as well. This particular
tool or resources deals directly with change and who to best deal with the changes in order to produce
a good outcome for all involved. Our text teaches us that, Organizational development (OD)
comprises the long range efforts and programs aimed at improving an organization s ability to survive
by changing its problem solving and renewal processes, (Brown, D.R., Harvey D., pg. 3). Making
adjustments in the areas of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If or when this happens several other problems can arise and opportunities for resolution or missed;
learning opportunities are missed as well. My OD specialists have actually been a group of capable
individuals; ranging across a wide spectrum from parents and spiritual leaders to managers and
friends. My Pastor was one of the persons that influenced me to change my perspective on obtaining
my degree. This is a specific goal that may seem minuscule in the grand scheme of things but it relates
to organizational development through large segmented change. Changing my perspective of being
able to achieve the goal and the after effects of what this goal means to my professional life are both
large scale. While having the skills to identify the issues and the problems is essential; I must also
have the skills to determine the opportunities. Opportunities to use organizational development can
easily be overlooked because most opportunities are deemed to be something positive. And because
the need for organizational development maybe viewed as negative, I may overlook the fact that it s
needed. An opportunity to improve performance is a great way to learn and a great way to develop
long lasting practices that will assist throughout life. Seizing the moments where there is an
opportunity for betterment will build my skills in the area of problem solving. Being a good problem
solver will certainly assist with success in life

Effects Of Advertising On Teenagers
An Essay on the Effects of Advertising on Teens
The Effects Of Advertising On TeensThe effects of 2People see advertisements all around the globe
that attempt to lure consumers to buy products. Advertisements are placed in newspapers, magazines,
schools, and on billboards everywhere. According to marketing consultants Stan Rapp and Tom
Collins, on a typical day, an average American sees over 5,000 advertisements a day (Gay, 1992).
Many questions arise about these advertisements, such as Is advertising deceptive? Does it create or
perpetuate stereotypes? Does it create conformity? Does it create insecurity in order to sell goods?
Does it cause people to buy things that they really dont need?(Alexander Hanson, 1993, p. 240).
Advertisers use specific methods to target teen consumers, but these methods are not always
successful or ethical. Advertising is giving the general public information about new goods and trying
to increase overall sales, which increases the efficiency of the nations economy. It is supposed to be a
significant way of getting the point across about a product and create motivation for people to buy.
Advertising alone, however, does not get customers. It simply catches consumers attention, gets them
to walk up to a shelf, and make an impulsive purchase. However, getting the customer back requires a
more creative marketing approach. There are several ways to research consumers behaviors, likes, and
dislikes. The most popular method is tests and surveys, both

Regional Differences Between The Northern And Southern...
1. The first important difference between the northern and southern colonies were the motives people
had in choosing where to settle. The northern colonies primarily consisted of people who were looking
for religious freedom. It was also comprised of men who were well versed in law and government. A
common purpose unified the colonists in the north and helped to create tight knit communities. As a
result, the northern states thrived. There was a dramatic increase in population and a longer life span.
Economic gain is what drove settlers south. These colonies were mostly comprised of young men with
little to no claim in English society. Large plantations replaced tight knit communities. A lack of
purpose in religious and social objectives stunted the growth of the southern colonies. By the mid to
late 1700 s the southern states began to stabilize and population began to increase. 2. The second
difference between the northern and southern colonies were the regional differences between the
people. Religion dominated the northern colonies. It governed the culture as well as the daily choices
people made. In the north education and literacy were important and as a result there were
opportunities to go to school and be educated. In the north, most of men were intellects and many
were university educated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Economy is the third difference. The northern states depended on manufacturing and trade to fuel their
economy. The growing season was much shorter than that of the south. As a result, northerners looked
to other ways of making money. Many became artisans and tradesmen. The shorter farming seasons
also reduced the need for slave labor in the north. In contrast, the south relied primarily on agriculture.
While land owners learned what crops to grow the economy in the south continued to be unstable. By
the early 1700 s plantation owners began growing various kinds of crops instead of relying solely on
tobacco. This helped to stabilize and grow the southern

Social Security And The Great Depression
Social Security
Alfred Malone
Sociology
Mrs. Joy Branch
14 November 2014
Social security was created in response to the Great Depression. The purpose of it is to protect aged
and disabled persons from illness expenses, to give children a chance to grow up healthy and secure,
keep families together, and to augment the material needs of individuals and families. The Social
Security Act was first passed in 1935 and later amended in 1956 to provide disability benefits. Some
programs included under the Social Security Act are: retirement insurance, survivor s insurance,
disability insurance, and some public assistance and welfare services. The Social Security program is
meant to provide benefits, social security numbers, and generate its own finances. The first Social
Security Numbers(SSN) were first issued in 1936. These cards each all have their own number used to
track the earning histories of U.S. Workers. The cards also were used to determine Social Security
benefit entitlement and benefit levels. The use of the SSN later expanded in terms of use. As of
December2008, the Social Security Administration (SSA) had issued over 450 million original SSNs,
and nearly every legal resident of the United States had one (Carolyn Puckett). The SSN led to what is
mostly used today to identify and gather information on a person. This method is particularly used
when applying for jobs. The largest source of income for most of today s elderly comes from social

Data Desscription for the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank...
In the research, data was extracted from FRED which is the database of the St Louis Federal Reserve
Bank and Bloomberg. Ordinary least squares (OLS) analysis was used in order to perform the
regressions needed to calculate the results. The data was taken exclusively on a domestic level
although quantitative easing was implemented abroad as well by the Bank of Japan in 1999.The data
was chosen solely from the United States due to easier access to the data and the focus of the research
to analyze United States economic affairs. The dependent variables are 5 year Treasury bill, 10 year
Treasury bill, 15 year fixed mortgage rate average in the United States, and 30 Year Fixed Rate
Mortgage Average in the United States. The data helps to explain how the different rounds of
quantitative easing affected mortgage rates and how it will affect the long term treasury yields. Fixed
mortgage rates were chosen since long term rate are the most common and the most highly targeted by
the fed. The treasury bills were chosen in order to compare to the mortgage rate since it is known that
a large portion of QE was targeting the long term mortgage rates as opposed to short term treasury
bills, so we wanted to display the difference between the two.
The independent variables are the following: Money supply (M2), monetary base, fed funds rate
(FFR), consumer price index (CPI), expected Inflation (Mich), mortgage backed securities (MBS),
Treasury securities, Baa, Aaa,baa10y, safety spread, QE1,

A Romanticized View Of Their Ancestors
In southern fiction there are many characters to be found that possess heroic, or idealized, views of
their ancestors. These same characters are often times burdened by, or feel responsible for, the legacy
left behind by their families. The ancestor s beliefs are like ghost constantly haunting characters in
southern literature. Fennell aptly quotes Faulkner in her article writing:
No man is himself, he is the sum of his past. There is no such things really as was because the past is.
It is part of every man, every woman, and every moment. All of his or her ancestry, background, is all
a part of himself and herself at any moment. And so a man, a character in a story at any moment of
action is not just himself as he is then, he is all that made him. (Fennell 37)
It is seemingly impossible to separate the past from the present among characters in southern
literature. In this paper I will examine three characters and their romanticized view of their ancestors,
as well as their burden. I will be considering Gail Hightower and Joanna Burden in William Faulkner s
Light in August, and Cheyenne Cotterell in Tiya Miles The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens
Ghosts. All three of these characters idealize their ancestors while simultaneously feeling burdened as
a result of it.
In Faulkner s Light in August Gail Hightower, an outcast reverend, is heavily burdened by his father
and grandfather. He lives within the past and seems to have no care for the present or future.

Clinical Assessment And Circumferential Treatment Of...
Lymphedema is the swelling of soft tissues as a result of the accumulation of protein rich fluid in the
extracellular spaces. Secondary lymphedema is precipitated by an event causing blockage or
interruption of the lymphatic vessels. It is a potential complication that may affect quality of life of
patients treated for breast cancer. Life long risk factors of post breast cancer lymphedema are related
to the extent of axillary node involvement, type of breast surgery, and radiation therapy, as these
factors decrease lymphatic drainage and increase stasis of fluid in the areas of skin and subcutaneous
tissues that drain to those regional lymph nodes. Breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL) can

In addition to invasive breast cancer, 60,290 new cases of in situ breast cancer weare expected to
occur among women in 2015. Moreover, an estimated 40,290730 breast cancer deaths weare expected
in 2015 [2]. However, as a result of advances in early detection and treatment, compared to today
breast cancer patients can expect survival that is similar to age matched women without the disease,
[3]. Tthe 5 year relative survival for women diagnosed with localized breast cancer has increased from
80% in the 1950s to 899% today [2].
Although breast cancer treatments, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hormonal
therapy, have improved patients outcomes, they cause patients to potentially suffer from substantial
adverse effects [34]. One complication of these treatments is lymphedema, a chronic health problem,
troublesome to both patients and health professionals [5]. Lymphedema describes a set of pathological
conditions in which there is an accumulation of protein rich fluid in soft tissues as a result of the
interruption of lymphatic flow [46, 7]. It is most commonly found in the extremities; however, it also
can be found in the head, neck, abdomen, lungs, and genital regions [58]. Although the incidence of
breast cancer related lymphedema is unclear due to differences in diagnoses, the different

Transitioning From A Licensed Practical Nurse
Transitioning from a licensed practical nurse to a registered nurse I feel will be a fairly challenging
task. This is due to the fact that responsibilities and expectations of a registered nurse are much higher.

What can be done to assure that United States (U.S.) citizens do not lose voting rights, but regain

My First Lesson On The Battle Of Lexington And Concord
This week I only attended three days for block teaching. Monday was Columbus Day so the school
was closed and everyone had the day off. Friday I did not attend because it was fall break for WIU so I
decided to go home for the weekend. On Tuesday the students worked on Cornell notes for several
headings in their textbook. Then on Wednesday I taught my first lesson on the battles of Lexington
and Concord. The students analyzed two primary source documents then as a class we discussed their
similarities and differences. The lesson went well despite the fact that two thirds of the class was
missing due to state testing. The fact that majority of the class made me worried for the lesson I
prepared for the following day because the two lessons were designed to match up. However, I was
pleasantly surprised that Thursday s lesson went as smoothly as it did. The students stayed on task and
were focused so I did not have really any issues with classroom management. Since this week was
short and I taught two out of the three days I was present my teacher didn t have much involvement

argument my mentor pulled him into the hallway to address the situation. I believe my best classroom
management skills were displayed during my Wednesday lesson. Due to majority of the class being
missing I got the vibe that the students who were present thought of it as a free day. I had one student

Homeless people are those that cannot maintain regular, secure and adequate housing. They are on the
side of streets, looking for ways to earn money and provide for themselves and their families. The
underprivileged and poor health is exceedingly interconnected. Poverty arises from political, social
and economical inequalities. Poverty leads to one becoming sick because of the lack of sanitation,
poor nutrition, making the choice of putting health at risk to provide for their family. Poor health in
turn traps communities in poverty. Residing in overcrowded and poor conditions contribute to the

It is common belief that music was first incorporated into films in the early 1900 s, to help drown out

life. The conditions were the cause of Jurgis s injury to his ankle, which led to his frustrating
unemployment. Jurgis and Ona, a couple who planned on getting married, struggled throughout their
time Chicago due the treatment of immigrants. Jurgis always prevailed and assured his wife that
things would soon be better as he had believed in the American dream. The main characters, Jurgis
Rudkus and Ona Lukoszaite, were in pursuit of a better life in America. They believed that hard work
would pay off and they would soon be able to make their dreams come true. Working long days and
working very hard led Jurgis to believe that something great would soon happen to him and his family.

She prematurely went into labor, which kills her and their child. Devastated by what he saw, Jurgis
disappears on a drinking binge. Making no money, becoming an alcoholic, and his wife s death threw
him into a downward spiral where he thought nothing could make it worse. All of his problems were
driven by the poor treatment of the immigrants. Nobody cared enough to help him and employers
would keep the people who would settle for less pay, no matter what problems they had. The Jungle
truly is a touching story that depicts just how bad being an immigrant in America was. They often
worked in worse conditions than anybody else while those in charge lived comfortably. The book also
shows how hopeful some wear and how strictly they believed in the so called American dream. Jurgis
was a strong spirited man, which often helped his family. Ona, seeing her husband work as hard as he
did, trusted his feelings that they would soon make it out of the hole they were stuck

The Causes Of Japanese Americans In America During And...
During and Post World War II, many Americans seemed to embrace the fear stemming from the War.
Due to the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Japanese Americans were highly discriminated against and
rounded up into interment camps during the war. Along with the historical racism of blacks, the
Japanese Americans began to be sought out and segregated from white America. As America moved
into the 1950 s and 60 s greater fear was on the minds of Americans as this time usher in the cold war
era, which was also known as the red scare. Communism was the ultimate enemy among Americans
and it showed that many citizens were afraid of being close to communist empathizers. Many
Americans were accusing their neighbors and their peers for being supportive of such ideology. Most
of these factors taking place in America from World War II up to the early 1960 s, lead to the desire of
many middle class white American s to seek new neighborhoods and to segregate them selves from
the fear they had. On top of these fears, the ability and access of which an increasing amount of
American s started to have during this period made it possible for such migration into new
neighborhoods and suburbia. Suburbs grew because of demand for new housing and space following
the war. Families were reunited and the new American dream was to own a house in the suburbs with
white picket fence and a yard for the kids to play in. Housing cost were low as ever because of the
federal governments encouragement with the

Information and Arguments Contained in Images Essay
Images contain arguments, whether if there are many or just a few. A series of images with no words
but contains an argument is a pictorial essay. John Berger s Ways of Seeing (1972) contains both word
and pictorial essays. The book is divided into seven sections, three being pictorials. In the very first
chapter of the book, Berger made it clear that the way one image follows another, their succession,
constructs an argument which becomes irreversible. Having noted that, it would seem that the sixth
essay argues that an observation painting provides more information than that of a directed or
arranged portrait. Images that are next to one another in the book such as Sarah Burge, 1883.

In these two images however, the observational artwork provides much more information than the
arranged portrait possibly because there is a lot more action and emotion being show in the image. It is
agreeable that observational images does provide much more information than arranged portraits also
because of the surrounding background as well as the actions shown in the images. The information
that we unconsciously get from images such as Johann Zoffany s Charles, Third Duke of Richmond
and Sale of Pictures and Slaves in the Rotunda, New Orleans, is the time period which it may have
occurred in and what kind of lifestyle both parties are living in. There is also action and movement in
the image and what could possibly be the century it was painted in. In contrast, Mademoiselle de
Clermont shows the viewers that the artist is more focused on the subject because she is looking
directly at the artist. There is also no sense of communication between the servants in the image with
her; this does not show any information except for the status difference between the any three women.
If there were some sort of communication between the women, there possibly would be more
information that the viewer can take such what kind of relationship the women have with each other as
well as the personality of each women. In comparison to the other two previous images, even though
this painting does provide a background, it is not enough to provide the viewer with

Indians And The Columbian Exchange
The Columbian Exchange is a huge exchange of goods and ideas between the old world and the new
world. The old world is considered Europe, Asia and Africa and the new world is considered America.
Their colonies started to trade with each other and that s when they formed the Columbian Exchange.
Many countries were involved in this trade, including China, Africa and Italy. The exchange of the
new ideas, traditions, food, religion and diet changed cultures everywhere. The Natives gave and
received many items. Even though Europeans and American Indians saw some similarities in each
other, their words differed. The introduction of plants into the new world extended a process that had
been taking place for centuries in the Old World. Trade ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That had to be the worst thing ever to have to deal with. Some of the diseases were: small pox,
measles, chicken pox, malaria, influenza and cholera, along with others. The ending result and the
ultimate result of the whole Columbian Exchange was negative because of the spread of the diseases
to the Indians and European, it created a lot of things and introduced new pests to the New World. The
disease did not only spread to the Europeans to the natives, but the natives passed syphilis to the
Europeans. Almost 90% of the Indians died due to the disease between 1492 and 1650. The disease
did the stop the Europeans from trying their best to get make it to the New World. They could not
avoid getting sick but it did not and could not stop them from invading Europeans. Clearly, imported
disease had the most ruinous influence on the lives of Indians. Cooperative labor was required for
hunting and gathering, and native groups faced extinction if disease caused a shortage of labor.
Besides goods, disease and other things, the Columbian exchange was also apart of slavery. When
slavery came most of the Native Americans has been killed off by the diseases that they has caught.
The Europeans had now brought slaves in to work for them on the land. When you think of slaves you
think of the south, but only 5% of the slaves brought to the New World started importing slaves in the
1620 s and it didn t end until the Civil War. It is still true that slavery has existed long

Learning Styles Essay
Adjusting learning and studying strategies can be a fast easy way to improve a college grade from a B
to an A. Through studies of learning styles I have been able to decipher my learning types. I am a
visual learner, have an integrated brain, meaning I use both hemispheres, and ranked highest in bodily
kinesthetic and logic mathematical intelligence.
There are three types of learning styles. They are: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. An auditory learner
processes information by hearing and discussing the information. Visual learners process information
through visuals such as charts, pictures, and other types of printed information. Kinesthetic learners
process information by muscle movements and experiences that are hands on. ... Show more content

Writing what I highlight down in my handwriting will give me an additional time of going over the
important information. Also, it will sink in more because it is generally easier to visually remember
ones own written text rather than printed text. By implementing this new, more in depth study strategy
I should show great improvement in my test and quiz scores, as well as in all other aspects of my
classes. The second strategy I will try will be to add in some techniques from my second strongest
category, kinesthetic. In this strategy I will be using all of the techniques from my first strategy, while
adding manipulatives, walking and standing, and creating games. I will add manipulatives such as
making flashcards. This will enable me to keep my hands busy while I learn. While studying the
highlighted text and the rewritten text I will attempt to be standing or walking to dismiss the
distraction of being uncomfortable from sitting for too long. Games will be created to make the
studying more interesting. It will allow me to capture more of the information due to the use of a
different studying technique. By experimenting with these different techniques I will be able to
maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of my studying, which will in turn show in higher grades.
The brain dominance theory identifies specific functions of the left and right hemisphere of the brain.
The test showed that I didn t have dominant hemisphere as I scored a 6. This shows that I m

New York University Student Feste
It is my pleasure to recommend an outstanding student, Feste, to New York University for a dual
degree in philosophy and acting. I believe that New York University (NYU) is the best fit for Feste
because he excels in both areas, and no other university could provide him with a high quality
education that combines both subjects. Although I have successfully recommended several students to
NYU, I have never had the honor of recommending a student like Feste; he manages to be the most
outspoken person in the room, yet contributes deep and insightful commentary. He is truly a student
that teaches me something every day. For example, he once told the class that smart people who think
they re witty are often fools, but because he was not witty, he might pass as being smart. The off
handed way in which he dispensed this knowledge amazed me, and upon questioning, he swore that
this comment was just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through conversations and weekly writing prompts, I have learned not to form an opinion of someone
based off of preconceived notions such as appearances or grades. Though Feste appears to play the
fool, he actually is wise and has potential and talent not accounted for in his Grade Point Average
(GPA). I believe Feste will excel in NYU s acting and philosophy programs because he takes on
different roles and dispenses insightful wisdom much like the famous philosophers in the fifteenth
century. Additionally, NYU is the best fit for Feste because numbers, such as GPA and test scores, will
not define him. He will pursue his interest in acting, contemplate human nature, and continue to
inspire the people around him if admitted to NYU. Feste s endless creativity, willingness to take risks,
and charisma lead me to believe that he will produce unique and thought provoking work in the
college and

Shawn Johnson s Winning Balance
Introduction: What if in a matter of seconds all your dreams that you have worked your entire life for
shattered before your eyes? What if this happened all while millions of people were watching? Would
you still get up and try again? Shawn Johnson has conquered many challenges throughout her
gymnastics career all while being watched by millions of people. In the book, Winning Balance,
Shawn shares some of her challenges and how she overcame them. The theme of this book is to never
give up and keep trying even if it seems as though you have already lost. One quote from the book that
really portrayed this theme is, Sometimes the real victory comes from simply not giving up. Just
remember: God is big enough to handle every challenge, and he is loving enough to calm every fear. (
pg. 91) The setting of this book takes place in Iowa as well as the 2008 Olympics in Bejing, China.
Plot: Although Shawn Johnson seemed like one ordinary girl from a small town in Iowa, she had one
extraordinary talent. From the age of three, Shawn was climbing on ... Show more content on

there at all times to support and love Shawn even through the grueling process of being an elite

trying to live a semi normal life. Shawn dedicates this book to her parents saying, To my parents, for
never leaving my side. You have always believed in me, supported me, picked me up, and brought me
back down to earth when I needed it. Shawn s coach, Chow was also a very important part in Shawn s
success. Chow was there with Shawn from the age of four and never left her side until she was going
home with Olympic gold medals. Chow believed in Shawn and pushed her to be the very best
gymnast she could be; Teaching Shawn courage, perseverance, and

Essay On Man Made And Natural Disaster
Man made and natural disasters are incidents that occur within our society. Research has indicated
these incidents have become more common internationally over the past several decades (Pan
American Health Organization, 2004). As a result, it is integral domestically to plan for, work to
prevent, and respond to incidents within our borders. These incidents have been shown to be
increasing in commonality due to increased levels and technology associated with transportation,
higher concentrations of humans in smaller areas, growth of chemical industries that increase
availability of explosive and/or toxic agents, and increased terrorist activity and armed conflicts (Pan
American Health Organization, 2004). In response to these increasing risks of man made and natural
disasters occurring within our borders, it is integral for our society to utilize an emergency
management system in order to prepare for, mitigate, and respond to these incidents. The Incident
Command System (ICS), which allows for coordination on every governmental level and among a
multitude of agencies, facilitates efficient communication between entities, and ensures a continuity of
command through a highly organized chain of command (Phoenix Police Department). ICS is
currently the main and most efficient and effective system throughout governmental and non
governmental agencies and entities within our borders. In response to the terror attacks at the turn of
the century and continuing threat of terror

  • 2. The Theme OfThe Death Of Ivan Ilyich By Leo Tolstoy True Happiness The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy reveals the harsh reality of many members of the upper class society. Ivan, a man that seems to have a perfect life, is a prime example of how climbing economic and social ladders does not guarantee one s happiness. Ivan has a lucrative career, a nice house, and a seemingly happy family. What more can he ask for, right? Contrary to widespread belief, Ivan is a very unhappy man. He spends most of his time in his office, working, to keep his distance from his family primarily from his demanding wife. Ivan is later struck ill after an accident that he thought was only minor. As Ivan come to face the reality that he is indeed dying, he reflects on his life. Upon his reflection, Ivan realizes that he has not lived the happiest life. Ivan s life manifests the reality of the aristocratic type, who are often materialistic, shallow, self centered, and lacking in empathy and compassion. Ivan, like many others in his ranking are known for their crass materialism. As stated in the text, having received money from his father for his equipment Ivan Ilyich ordered himself clothes at Scharmer s, the fashionable tailor, hung a medallion inscribed respice finem on his watch chain, took leave of his professor and the prince who was patron of the school (Tolstoy 747). Ivan is fixated on impressing others with his fancy and expensive clothing. He also lives in a typical home like other people of his status. Ivan lives his life to others ... • 3. The Disproportionate Number of African-American Males... The disproportionate number of African American males incarcerated within the United States is a difficult social dilemma that needs to be more fully understood and addressed. This paper will explore the mass incarceration of African American men. The paper will look into the prevalence, causes, consequences, and offer solutions to this crisis. Specifically, seeking to find what factors have created such high levels of criminal justice control for African American males, and explore the impact on the family and community. Incarceration is immense in the United States. Since the 1980s, the United States has experienced a massive increase in incarceration. The overall rate has increased from 139 prisoners per hundred thousand US ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Similarly, since the 1980s there has been the initiation of privatization of prisons, in the United States. Today, for profit companies operate 264 correctional facilities, housing almost 99,000 inmates (Glans, 2011). The two largest are Correction Corporations of America (CCA) and the GEO Group, which together combined for a capacity of 129,000 prisoners. According to Think progress, in 2010 Corrections Corporation of America and GEO Group made over 2.9 billion in revenue (Sanchez, 2011). Equally important, these companies exert influence on public policy, in order to fashion the marketplace environment (i.e. more prisoners/African American males) required to increase its businesses. This is done through lobbying politicians, direct campaign contributions, and political networking. Most economists would characterize incarceration as a public good. In contrast most racial minorities, in particular African American males, would consider the business of incarceration, the laws that lead to incarceration and the way the law are enforced as biased. The racial minorities in the United States, particularly the African American male, have come to understand this as racial profiling. The term profile initially was linked ... • 4. Compare And Contrast The Lottery By Shirley Jackson Following the crowd can have disastrous consequences is something both first they came by Martin Niemoller and The lottery by Shirley Jackson have in common. But for different reasons. Both stories are different but are also the same. Both stories share the same theme but for different reasons. So these two stories have a lot in common but somethings that are different, so in this essay I will talk about how they are the same and also different. Some ways that The Lottery and First they came are the same is that they both share the same theme. For example, they both share the theme that they both have disastrous consequences from following the crowd. For instance, in the lottery Tessie follows the crowd by participating in the lottery with everyone else. And in First they came martin followed the crowd by not speaking up. The two characters not speaking up led to their death. Which is something both stories had in common. Another way that you can compare both stories is that both of the characters didn t stand up for what s right when they should have. For instance, in the poem First they came in lines 1, 3, and 4 it says and I did not speak out so this means he did not speak out for other people. But when he got called he expected someone to speak out instead. In the story The Lottery Tessie did not speak out about how the bad The Lottery was. For example, the entire story Tessie didn t say the lottery was a bad idea until she was chosen to get stoned. For instance, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Do You Speak American Summary Do You Speak American Discussion The PBS presentation of Do You Speak American , hosted by Robert MacNeil, seeks to explore the rich diversity of the blending of cultures in the United States (US) through a study of dialects. Even with their multi segment series, the producers were only able to briefly discuss a small portion of the vast experience which is our country. As a family history researcher, I found that the brief discussion of Pidgen, Gullah, and Geechee most interesting. Gullah, Geechee, and Pidgen are considered languages evolved from the African Americans slaves brought to this country. While searching for more information about these dialects, I discovered that the term Pidgin is not a good description for any dialect (Thompson, Pidgin Languages ). ... She further explained that when no common language existed between the two groups a means of communication developed from a primary language blended with one or more local languages. Since the Spanish, French, English, Dutch, and Portuguese were major colonial powers, their languages were generally the source for many of the Pidgin languages. A quick check on the internet indicates that there are Pidgins not only developed from English and African languages, but also between English and Native American, Eskimo Icelandic, Yokohama (Japanese), and Taimyr (Russian). • 6. Asian American Self Regulation Similarly, Iyengar and Lepper (1999) examined the cultural differences on children s self regulation. They compared European American and Asian American on their self regulation. The participants could either make their own choices on the features of the task or assigned by their authority figures or peers. They found that European American were less motivated when they were doing the task that was assigned by someone else. In contrast, Asian American preferred to the task that was chosen by their trusted peoples more. This suggested that the level of self regulation were different between European American and Asian American. Different cultures have different practices of teaching children. These differences cause a discrepancy in the way of self regulation. Hence, cultural factors may predict children s ability to self regulate. Human beings are social animals and easily influenced by the surrounding environment. As mentioned before, newborn infants direct experiences are limited, so their interactive caregivers and the environment mainly affect their self regulations. Being bilingual has many benefits that vary from traveling with ease all through having a brain that can multitask faster. In the past decade many schools in California, as well as other states, have started a program called the dual immersion or something of that nature in which they have a class that is in another language, usually Spanish, and they teach the kids all the required material in that other language. The Dual Immersion program is something that should be instated into more schools, specifically in the bay area, because of the diversity seen here. A solution to these problems would be for the school to have the duel immersion classes do fundraisers to help get money into their program. These fundraisers/fairs could be cultural events to help educate the kids of different cultures and communities in the Latin world. This could not only benefit the duel immersion classes but anyone that would show up to the fundraiser, as they would be learning about the culture that the classes chose for that particular fundraisers/fair, with the money the program makes from this it can afford to contract more teachers to help out, and give these kids the benefits they deserve. Although it will be time consuming and there might need to be a lot of parents to help out, the benefits outweigh these small setbacks. Having more teachers can give the program the chance to have smaller classes in which the teachers can have more one on one with the kids so that they each get the right amount of attention they need and deserve. • 8. The Most Controversial and Debated Issue of Abortion Abortion One of the most controversy issues that have had many Americans debating over the years is abortion. But why so much controversy? Well to start with we have to understand what abortion is. According to the Oxford dictionary, abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. There are also 2 types of abortions. The first one is Therapeutic abortion, which the baby is aborted for the safety of the mother, and elective abortion, in which the abortion is performed due to a choice that the mother has made for an unborn child. In other words, abortion is the end or the expulsion of a fetus from the uterus by natural causes or by clinical methods before it is able to survive independently. Since the past 60 years after the famous Roe v Wade case was passed by the Supreme Court, many Americans have being against and for abortion. This decision led to the formation of two groups the anti abortion and the pro choice. Anti abortion are known as pro life people or groups and the pro choice are those who want to legalize abortion. What really happened in the Roe v Wade case? First we have to look at the time line of abortion. In the mid 1800s states began to pass laws that made illegal abortion. As a consequence many women were dying because around those years 1800s, any surgical procedures were risky and put life in danger (Time Line of Abortion.) I have been active component my entire career, and I had given little thought to the other side. After reading this, I agree that bringing the reserve and National Guard components with us into this new realm of tactics may pose a daunting challenge. However, operating in these conflicts that present us with complex threat rich environments should primarily be the realm of the active component. It is probably best to leave these operations to the units that have the time and resources to effectively train for them. I believe it is likely, that these force on force operations will not last as long as the operations we re used to. Hopefully within weeks, our DOD partners can secure air supremacy and alleviate the need for such extreme tactics and procedures. This will allow other units to fly in support of other operations without the need to be extremely proficient in the latest tactics. The National Guard and reserve components will be challenged to train to proficiency, but hopefully in these types of conflicts they will be able to operate in their intended function in a secondary, and supplementary ... • 10. The Theory Of A Management Theory A management theory is a collection of different ideas that are used to outline the general rules for how a business or organization will manage itself (Business Dictionary, n.d.). Every organization uses management or managerial theories as the foundation in which they use to implement, help increase productivity, and service quality (Hawthorne, n.d.). An organization doesn t use just one theory or concept when implementing their strategies but actually they use a combination of theories that work best for their workplace, purpose and workforce (Hawthorne, n.d.). It turns into a mixture of different theories that is blended for exactly what the organization needs. Not many organizations are going to openly publish what managerial theories they use to keep their company going. It s not good to show your hand of cards to your competitors. It only makes you weaker and they know what your game plan is. The Train Car As A Symbol Of The Extermination Regularly occurring within a historical narrative is the prominence of non textual documentation through the expression of symbols, iconography, and emotional memory. Inherently representational, symbols are used to add a dimension in to a narrative. In the case of the Holocaust, symbols are used to materially express the nearly unfathomably reality of its events. But, what do we do with often emotionally charged perceptions of history? Symbols can be used as evidence, and as a way to connect the past to the present commemorating the time period in which they encapsulate. Additionally, despite the success of the Einsatzgruppen shootings there were simply few too many men to eradicate the growing number of Jews. It was during this critical stage approximated between July and December 1941 that Hitler abandoned previous plans of emigration and mobile killings to that of a complete extermination of Jews from the entire continent of Europe. In 2003, the QCA asked primary school teachers how long they spent on average each week preparing children for their year 6 sat s. Shockingly they found that 10 hours a week was spent preparing children for the end of year SATs and between Christmas and May, schools spend nearly 50% of their teaching time coaching children. This leaves very little time to teach anything other than the topics needed to pass the tests. Pupils become very demotivated and stressed with the pressure of failure. This was shown quite movingly when the BBC Panorama team interviewed a year 6 student, the 11 year old told interviewers: I m really scared about my SATs, the head teacher came and talked to us about our ... • 20. Friction Stir Welding And Artificial Neural Networks 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND Friction stir welding ( FSW) and Artificial neural networks (ANN) are two well known approaches in their respective field. FSW is a well known method in material sciences and ANN in computer science. The aim is to combine these two approaches to get some important results. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a novel method of joining materials in solid state. It was invented by the Welding Institute (TWI) in 1991. It was initially applied for joining aluminium and later expanded its domain for joining similar and dissimilar alloys. Basically in FSW a specially designed rotating cylindrical tool that comprises of shoulder and pin is used. The pin of the rotating tool is plunged into the sheet material and the shoulder comes into contact with the surface of sheet, and then traverses in the desired direction. The contact between the rotating tool and the sheet generate heat which softens the material below the melting point and with the stirring caused by the pin, the material within the processed zone undergoes intense plastic deformation yielding a dynamically recrystallized fine grain microstructure. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) is a network of simple processing elements (neurons) which exhibits complex behavior, determined by the connections between the processing elements and element parameter. Each neuron is connected to other neurons by means of directed communication links, each with an associated weight. The weight represents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. How The Film Industry Has A Huge Budget For The City Over... PART 2 CIRCULAR ECONOMY Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing Oscar Wilde, 1890 Again, my concern started with a personal experience. In 2014, I was working as an Experience Designer for Universal Pictures NBC International Ltd. . The film industry has a huge budget to spend on the building of visual artefacts. However, I was quite shocked by the squandering of resources I witnessed. There was no care or awareness of sustainability. Also, I expected designers and production to work much more closely together, which would have prevented much waste in the first place. Yet, the film industry being as hierarchical as it is, production never got back to me. According to the London Data store, London is already the third busiest city in filmmaking in the world, behind LA and New York. This booming industry has brought £770m of investment to the city over the last four years. 8. London Datastore greater London authority (2015), [accessed 6 May 2016]. I have always been fascinated by transforming materials into something magical. Yet most of the time my task was to transform the very cheapest materials into a luxuriously looking illusion. Obviously as a designer one aims to make the best of available resources in the most efficient way. But ever working quicker and faster and thus taking a toll on quality, made me feel uncomfortable. Success Through Organizational Development Essay Success through Organizational Development BUS 370: Organizational Development Heather Strouse June 27, 2011 Success through Organizational Development Organizational development is a learning tool that can be utilized not only for professional success but for personal success in life as well. This particular tool or resources deals directly with change and who to best deal with the changes in order to produce a good outcome for all involved. My Pastor was one of the persons that influenced me to change my perspective on obtaining my degree. This is a specific goal that may seem minuscule in the grand scheme of things but it relates to organizational development through large segmented change. Changing my perspective of being able to achieve the goal and the after effects of what this goal means to my professional life are both large scale. While having the skills to identify the issues and the problems is essential; I must also have the skills to determine the opportunities. Opportunities to use organizational development can easily be overlooked because most opportunities are deemed to be something positive. And because the need for organizational development maybe viewed as negative, I may overlook the fact that it s needed. An opportunity to improve performance is a great way to learn and a great way to develop long lasting practices that will assist throughout life. Seizing the moments where there is an opportunity for betterment will build my skills in the area of problem solving. Being a good problem solver will certainly assist with success in life ... • 25. Effects Of Advertising On Teenagers An Essay on the Effects of Advertising on Teens The Effects Of Advertising On TeensThe effects of 2People see advertisements all around the globe that attempt to lure consumers to buy products. Advertisements are placed in newspapers, magazines, schools, and on billboards everywhere. According to marketing consultants Stan Rapp and Tom Collins, on a typical day, an average American sees over 5,000 advertisements a day (Gay, 1992). Many questions arise about these advertisements, such as Is advertising deceptive? Does it create or perpetuate stereotypes? Does it create conformity? Does it create insecurity in order to sell goods? Does it cause people to buy things that they really dont need?(Alexander Hanson, 1993, p. 240). Advertisers use specific methods to target teen consumers, but these methods are not always successful or ethical. Advertising is giving the general public information about new goods and trying to increase overall sales, which increases the efficiency of the nations economy. It is supposed to be a significant way of getting the point across about a product and create motivation for people to buy. Advertising alone, however, does not get customers. It simply catches consumers attention, gets them to walk up to a shelf, and make an impulsive purchase. However, getting the customer back requires a more creative marketing approach. There are several ways to research consumers behaviors, likes, and dislikes. The most popular method is tests and surveys, both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Regional Differences Between The Northern And Southern... 1. The first important difference between the northern and southern colonies were the motives people had in choosing where to settle. The northern colonies primarily consisted of people who were looking for religious freedom. It was also comprised of men who were well versed in law and government. A common purpose unified the colonists in the north and helped to create tight knit communities. As a result, the northern states thrived. There was a dramatic increase in population and a longer life span. Economic gain is what drove settlers south. These colonies were mostly comprised of young men with little to no claim in English society. Large plantations replaced tight knit communities. A lack of purpose in religious and social objectives stunted the growth of the southern colonies. By the mid to late 1700 s the southern states began to stabilize and population began to increase. 2. The second difference between the northern and southern colonies were the regional differences between the people. Religion dominated the northern colonies. In contrast, the south relied primarily on agriculture. While land owners learned what crops to grow the economy in the south continued to be unstable. • 27. Social Security And The Great Depression Social Security Alfred Malone Sociology Mrs. Joy Branch 14 November 2014 Social security was created in response to the Great Depression. The purpose of it is to protect aged and disabled persons from illness expenses, to give children a chance to grow up healthy and secure, keep families together, and to augment the material needs of individuals and families. The Social Security Act was first passed in 1935 and later amended in 1956 to provide disability benefits. Some programs included under the Social Security Act are: retirement insurance, survivor s insurance, disability insurance, and some public assistance and welfare services. The Social Security program is meant to provide benefits, social security numbers, and generate its own finances. The first Social Security Numbers(SSN) were first issued in 1936. These cards each all have their own number used to track the earning histories of U.S. Workers. The cards also were used to determine Social Security benefit entitlement and benefit levels. The use of the SSN later expanded in terms of use. As of December2008, the Social Security Administration (SSA) had issued over 450 million original SSNs, and nearly every legal resident of the United States had one (Carolyn Puckett). Ordinary least squares (OLS) analysis was used in order to perform the regressions needed to calculate the results. The data was taken exclusively on a domestic level although quantitative easing was implemented abroad as well by the Bank of Japan in 1999.The data was chosen solely from the United States due to easier access to the data and the focus of the research to analyze United States economic affairs. The dependent variables are 5 year Treasury bill, 10 year Treasury bill, 15 year fixed mortgage rate average in the United States, and 30 Year Fixed Rate Mortgage Average in the United States. The data helps to explain how the different rounds of quantitative easing affected mortgage rates and how it will affect the long term treasury yields. Fixed mortgage rates were chosen since long term rate are the most common and the most highly targeted by the fed. The treasury bills were chosen in order to compare to the mortgage rate since it is known that a large portion of QE was targeting the long term mortgage rates as opposed to short term treasury bills, so we wanted to display the difference between the two. • 31. A Romanticized View Of Their Ancestors In southern fiction there are many characters to be found that possess heroic, or idealized, views of their ancestors. These same characters are often times burdened by, or feel responsible for, the legacy left behind by their families. The ancestor s beliefs are like ghost constantly haunting characters in southern literature. Fennell aptly quotes Faulkner in her article writing: No man is himself, he is the sum of his past. There is no such things really as was because the past is. It is part of every man, every woman, and every moment. All of his or her ancestry, background, is all a part of himself and herself at any moment. And so a man, a character in a story at any moment of action is not just himself as he is then, he is all that made him. (Fennell 37) It is seemingly impossible to separate the past from the present among characters in southern literature. In this paper I will examine three characters and their romanticized view of their ancestors, as well as their burden. I will be considering Gail Hightower and Joanna Burden in William Faulkner s Light in August, and Cheyenne Cotterell in Tiya Miles The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens Ghosts. All three of these characters idealize their ancestors while simultaneously feeling burdened as a result of it. In Faulkner s Light in August Gail Hightower, an outcast reverend, is heavily burdened by his father and grandfather. He lives within the past and seems to have no care for the present or future. Secondary lymphedema is precipitated by an event causing blockage or interruption of the lymphatic vessels. It is a potential complication that may affect quality of life of patients treated for breast cancer. Life long risk factors of post breast cancer lymphedema are related to the extent of axillary node involvement, type of breast surgery, and radiation therapy, as these factors decrease lymphatic drainage and increase stasis of fluid in the areas of skin and subcutaneous tissues that drain to those regional lymph nodes. However, as a result of advances in early detection and treatment, compared to today breast cancer patients can expect survival that is similar to age matched women without the disease, [3]. Tthe 5 year relative survival for women diagnosed with localized breast cancer has increased from 80% in the 1950s to 899% today [2]. Although breast cancer treatments, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy, have improved patients outcomes, they cause patients to potentially suffer from substantial adverse effects [34]. One complication of these treatments is lymphedema, a chronic health problem, troublesome to both patients and health professionals [5]. Lymphedema describes a set of pathological conditions in which there is an accumulation of protein rich fluid in soft tissues as a result of the interruption of lymphatic flow [46, 7]. • 46. The Causes Of Japanese Americans In America During And... During and Post World War II, many Americans seemed to embrace the fear stemming from the War. Due to the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Japanese Americans were highly discriminated against and rounded up into interment camps during the war. Along with the historical racism of blacks, the Japanese Americans began to be sought out and segregated from white America. As America moved into the 1950 s and 60 s greater fear was on the minds of Americans as this time usher in the cold war era, which was also known as the red scare. Communism was the ultimate enemy among Americans and it showed that many citizens were afraid of being close to communist empathizers. Many Americans were accusing their neighbors and their peers for being supportive of such ideology. Most of these factors taking place in America from World War II up to the early 1960 s, lead to the desire of many middle class white American s to seek new neighborhoods and to segregate them selves from the fear they had. On top of these fears, the ability and access of which an increasing amount of American s started to have during this period made it possible for such migration into new neighborhoods and suburbia. Suburbs grew because of demand for new housing and space following the war. Families were reunited and the new American dream was to own a house in the suburbs with white picket fence and a yard for the kids to play in. • 47. Information and Arguments Contained in Images Essay Images contain arguments, whether if there are many or just a few. A series of images with no words but contains an argument is a pictorial essay. John Berger s Ways of Seeing (1972) contains both word and pictorial essays. The book is divided into seven sections, three being pictorials. In the very first chapter of the book, Berger made it clear that the way one image follows another, their succession, constructs an argument which becomes irreversible. Having noted that, it would seem that the sixth essay argues that an observation painting provides more information than that of a directed or arranged portrait. In these two images however, the observational artwork provides much more information than the arranged portrait possibly because there is a lot more action and emotion being show in the image. It is agreeable that observational images does provide much more information than arranged portraits also because of the surrounding background as well as the actions shown in the images. The information that we unconsciously get from images such as Johann Zoffany s Charles, Third Duke of Richmond and Sale of Pictures and Slaves in the Rotunda, New Orleans, is the time period which it may have occurred in and what kind of lifestyle both parties are living in. There is also action and movement in the image and what could possibly be the century it was painted in. In contrast, Mademoiselle de Clermont shows the viewers that the artist is more focused on the subject because she is looking directly at the artist. There is also no sense of communication between the servants in the image with her; this does not show any information except for the status difference between the any three women. If there were some sort of communication between the women, there possibly would be more information that the viewer can take such what kind of relationship the women have with each other as well as the personality of each women. In comparison to the other two previous images, even though this painting does provide a background, it is not enough to provide the viewer with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Indians And The Columbian Exchange The Columbian Exchange is a huge exchange of goods and ideas between the old world and the new world. The old world is considered Europe, Asia and Africa and the new world is considered America. Their colonies started to trade with each other and that s when they formed the Columbian Exchange. Many countries were involved in this trade, including China, Africa and Italy. The exchange of the new ideas, traditions, food, religion and diet changed cultures everywhere. The Natives gave and received many items. Even though Europeans and American Indians saw some similarities in each other, their words differed. That had to be the worst thing ever to have to deal with. Some of the diseases were: small pox, measles, chicken pox, malaria, influenza and cholera, along with others. The ending result and the ultimate result of the whole Columbian Exchange was negative because of the spread of the diseases to the Indians and European, it created a lot of things and introduced new pests to the New World. The disease did not only spread to the Europeans to the natives, but the natives passed syphilis to the Europeans. Almost 90% of the Indians died due to the disease between 1492 and 1650. The disease did the stop the Europeans from trying their best to get make it to the New World. They could not avoid getting sick but it did not and could not stop them from invading Europeans. Clearly, imported disease had the most ruinous influence on the lives of Indians. Cooperative labor was required for hunting and gathering, and native groups faced extinction if disease caused a shortage of labor. Besides goods, disease and other things, the Columbian exchange was also apart of slavery. When slavery came most of the Native Americans has been killed off by the diseases that they has caught. The Europeans had now brought slaves in to work for them on the land. Through studies of learning styles I have been able to decipher my learning types. I am a visual learner, have an integrated brain, meaning I use both hemispheres, and ranked highest in bodily kinesthetic and logic mathematical intelligence. There are three types of learning styles. They are: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. An auditory learner processes information by hearing and discussing the information. Visual learners process information through visuals such as charts, pictures, and other types of printed information. Kinesthetic learners process information by muscle movements and experiences that are hands on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, it will sink in more because it is generally easier to visually remember ones own written text rather than printed text. By implementing this new, more in depth study strategy I should show great improvement in my test and quiz scores, as well as in all other aspects of my classes. The second strategy I will try will be to add in some techniques from my second strongest category, kinesthetic. In this strategy I will be using all of the techniques from my first strategy, while adding manipulatives, walking and standing, and creating games. I will add manipulatives such as making flashcards. This will enable me to keep my hands busy while I learn. While studying the highlighted text and the rewritten text I will attempt to be standing or walking to dismiss the distraction of being uncomfortable from sitting for too long. Games will be created to make the studying more interesting. It will allow me to capture more of the information due to the use of a different studying technique. By experimenting with these different techniques I will be able to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of my studying, which will in turn show in higher grades. The brain dominance theory identifies specific functions of the left and right hemisphere of the brain. The test showed that I didn t have dominant hemisphere as I scored a 6. This shows that I m ... • 50. New York University Student Feste It is my pleasure to recommend an outstanding student, Feste, to New York University for a dual degree in philosophy and acting. I believe that New York University (NYU) is the best fit for Feste because he excels in both areas, and no other university could provide him with a high quality education that combines both subjects. Although I have successfully recommended several students to NYU, I have never had the honor of recommending a student like Feste; he manages to be the most outspoken person in the room, yet contributes deep and insightful commentary. He is truly a student that teaches me something every day. For example, he once told the class that smart people who think they re witty are often fools, but because he was not witty, he might pass as being smart. The off handed way in which he dispensed this knowledge amazed me, and upon questioning, he swore that this comment was just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe Feste will excel in NYU s acting and philosophy programs because he takes on different roles and dispenses insightful wisdom much like the famous philosophers in the fifteenth century. Additionally, NYU is the best fit for Feste because numbers, such as GPA and test scores, will not define him. He will pursue his interest in acting, contemplate human nature, and continue to inspire the people around him if admitted to NYU. Feste s endless creativity, willingness to take risks, and charisma lead me to believe that he will produce unique and thought provoking work in the college and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 52. Essay On Man Made And Natural Disaster Man made and natural disasters are incidents that occur within our society. Research has indicated these incidents have become more common internationally over the past several decades (Pan American Health Organization, 2004). As a result, it is integral domestically to plan for, work to prevent, and respond to incidents within our borders. These incidents have been shown to be increasing in commonality due to increased levels and technology associated with transportation, higher concentrations of humans in smaller areas, growth of chemical industries that increase availability of explosive and/or toxic agents, and increased terrorist activity and armed conflicts (Pan American Health Organization, 2004). In response to these increasing risks of man made and natural disasters occurring within our borders, it is integral for our society to utilize an emergency management system in order to prepare for, mitigate, and respond to these incidents. The Incident Command System (ICS), which allows for coordination on every governmental level and among a multitude of agencies, facilitates efficient communication between entities, and ensures a continuity of command through a highly organized chain of command (Phoenix Police Department). ICS is currently the main and most efficient and effective system throughout governmental and non governmental agencies and entities within our borders.
