Emerson s opinion on history in his essay History is thought provoking. Emerson often views history
as a prevalent or universal mind . This universal mind is common and accessible to all men. History is
often viewed as the record of the universal mind and is also contained in that universal mind.
Therefore, Emerson is able to say, Man is explicable by nothing less than all his history . Emerson
tends to believe in a certain relation between the hours of a lifetime and the centuries of the time itself.
If one thinks history is something that happened in the past, one is mistaken. History is very similar to

Bringing historical to a personal level is a great way to make it relevant, and turn it from studying the
dates to the actual ideas of the people and what they valued. A mans experiences in life are facts that
he stores. Knowledge and one s life experiences are better than looking it up in a book. An example of

Alexander the Great Alexander the Great or Alexandros III Philippou Makedonan was born in July
356BC in Pella, Macedonia (Popovic intro). He conquered what was in his time, most of the civilized
world. Alexander accomplished greater deeds than any, not only of the kings before him but also of

Growing up, Alexander was trained in the art of war. He learned sword fighting, javelin throwing,
horseback riding, and archery (Townson 3). He was well known for his ablility to tame horses.
Alexander had the best education possible in his time. The great philosopher Aristotle taught him.
Aristotle taught him about literature, and introduced him to science, philosophy, and medicine which
he became interested in. His favorite work of literature was The Iliad, by Homer. Every night he slept
with it and a dagger under his pillow (Townson 3). Soon he would be able to put all of his drive,
ambition, and education to work. Phillip was assassinated in July 336BC on the way to the theater

It is said that it takes 10,000 hours to master something. Great musical performers are no exception.
Miles Davis, Maria Callas, and Mozart are examples of musical genius who spent countless hours
perfecting their craft whether it was in the genre of Jazz, Classical, or Opera. Callas was known for
being an opera legend. Her teacher, Maria Trivella, reflected on her first impression of Callas voice
saying. ... it swirled and flared like a flame and filled the air with melodious reverberations like a
carillon. It was by any standards an amazing phenomenon, or rather it was a great talent that needed
control, technical training and strict discipline in order to shine with all its brilliance. This comment
showed that talent was there but she needed to put in hours strenuous technical practice to establish
herself as a legend. In a way I can relate on the level of practicing then having to prove myself to my
teachers. I spend most of my year perfecting arias and practicing my sight reading to show my talents
whenever time calls for it. Last year I didn t have very many opportunities to prove myself except for
one time at State Competition. Performing at state was my chance to show the skills I ve learned from
my preparation and from the people around me.
Going to state was kind of crazy. If you would ve told me in middle school that I had taken up voice
lessons, performed in front of an audience, and was seriously considering a career in music I would of
laughed at you
