Who Is John Stuart Mill
Freedom of actions within society, and the rights of the individual vs the rights of the collective, are
argued by many enlightened thinkers. In comparing thoughts of John Stuart Mill when he discusses
the rights of the collective vs the individual and his idea of the harm principle one can come to
understand that government is not able to control peoples actions unless they are causing harm to
other individuals. Throughout the paper, I wish to draw on Mill s other works including
Considerations on Representative Government by Mill, and On Liberty by Mill as well as secondary
external sources regarding the rights of citizens, and the universality of rights. I will draw on readings
from Menezes Oliveira, Jorge. Harm and Offense in Mill s Conception ... Show more content on

I.e, the use of addictive drugs, and suicide. Mill bases his theory based on morality and freedom,
however, one argument against his theory of the harm principle is that every individual has different
levels of morality and freedoms.
John Stuart Mill s idea of the harm principle argues that the government may only justifiably interfere
in individual actions to prevent harm, or the threat of harm, to others, or to the greater community.
Mill s argument is designed to protect the greater collective society from what he states are individual
actions that could prove to be detrimental for the state, including the use of addictive drugs and
suicide. Mill states that this is the only time that the government should interview with the actions of
the individual within society because of it, for Mills, is an example that would bring a concern to
others, and harm. Similar to Mills is Frances Declaration of

Essay Health Care Reform
Health Care Reform
There has been a lot of talk and debate lately over Health Care Reform, as people are trying to answer
the question Should a universally accessible health care system be implemented in the United States
(US)? This ongoing highly debatable issue remains a hot topic among US citizens from all walks of
life, from the very poor to the very wealthy. Health Care Reform affects everyone. The vast majority
of the US population is very dissatisfied with the current state of health care. According to the ABC
News and Washington Post cooperative poll, 57 percent of Americans aren t satisfied with the overall
system of health care (Langer, 2009). Consequently, the issue of the Health Care Reform was born,
but before analyzing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, Americans have quite a diverse outlook on health insurance and its applicability in different
situations. The Washington Post poll stated that 49 percent of people affirm the idea of overall health
insurance (if it is required). More importantly, the majority of respondents agreed on certain major
points that insurance must contain and they are: special aid to the poor (70 percent), coverage of those,
who have pre existing conditions such as disability or chronic diseases (68 percent), must be offered
by the employers (62 percent), and underinsured mustn t pay into government funds (52 percent)
(Langer,2009).
Most Americans are provided with some form of insurance either through their employer or an
individual plan which is part of a public program such as Medicaid or Medicare. However, there are
still 45 million people who lack coverage (Melisa Paradis, Janelle Wood, Mary Cramer, 2009).
According to the governmental insurance plan, people who are underinsured must be protected and
have an opportunity to buy suitable medical coverage through the insurance exchange. Yet the actual
utilization of such an exchange is scheduled in the beginning of 2013, which indicates a considerable
period of waiting. America s Affordable Health Choices Act informs that people should be provided
with standardized benefit packages in order to compare the

U.S. Diplomatic Mission Attacks in Benghazi and the Aftermath
On the day of the 11th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center,
another attack unfolded this time, on foreign soil, but still very much hitting close to home. Four U.S.
citizens the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens; a Foreign Service information management
officer, and two other U.S. personnel died when members of the radical Islamist group called Ansar al
Sharia, one of many extremist Salafi groups, clashed with security forces in Benghazi after protesting
near the U.S. consulate. It has been debated what has provoked this violence, but it was initially
believed that it was due to an online film considered offensive to Islam. Earlier on in the day, in Cairo,

militias, Libyans have had enough of extremists a year after ousting long time dictator Muammar
Gaddafi, especially after the recent attacks. On the other side, those who are pro Ansar al Sharia
protested in support of the extremist group, justifying the killing of the Americans with the offense the
U.S. had committed against Islam with the release of the now notorious film. After protests calmed
and subsided (at least in the media), on the other side of the Atlantic ocean, many criticized President
Obama of his handling of the attacks in Benghazi. Many on the conservative right accused him of
being an apologist for Islamic terrorism and the killing of the four Americans. This became a hot topic
in the presidential debates in October, when presidential candidate Mitt romney accused Obama of
having gone on an apology tour, where President Obama apologized to other nations for American
behavior, particularly in the case of the anti Islamic film. He referenced a statement released by the
U.S. Embassy in Cairo, which stated that it condemned efforts to hurt the religious feelings of
Muslims, and that they firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech
to hurt the religious beliefs of others. Romney affirmed, as well as other Conservatives, that the

Examples Of Leadership In Braveheart
In the movie Braveheart you can discover the specifics of one man who assumes numerous difficulties
of life and in battle. William Wallace established numerous leadership skills that assisted his army in
being successful as an underdog. Several of the abilities Wallace utilized are usual in current day
industry leaders. Organizational Change in Braveheart
The movie Braveheart is a movie in which you can uncover the indirect elements of a man that deals
with several problems of life and fight. William Wallace arranged several authority aptitudes that
assisted his armed force in being victorious as a weaker one. A big amount of the aptitudes Wallace
used were normal as a part of present industry leaders. As a result of rising in an authority part,
Wallace widened the high sensation of the comprehensive armed force regardless of the fact that he
was not the specific individual that was put in control. One of the important things that Wallace did

Theme Of Redemption And Good Country People By Flannery O...
Flannery O Connor s stories A Good Man Is Hard to Find , and Good Country People both present
very similar themes. Within these stories is the theme of redemption, and the way relationships affect
the way people interact with each other seem to be a core issue she struggles with. Both stories have a
protagonist that have to deal with some type of villain who has little to no belief, while their presence
of faith that there is good in people gets them into the horrible situations that they find themselves in.
She uses some of the same aspects in both stories in very different ways. The characters are a big part
of her stories, the conflicts that arise in the story, and the symbolism that is used. This paper will
explore how faith can lead us to have false hope and why it is important to remain aware. In both
stories there are seemingly different protagonist. First there is Hulga. She is someone that rude, harsh,
with Doctorate in Philosophy, and is appalled by the idea of love. Then you have a grandmother, who
is always looking back on the old days and a slight sense of wonder. From what O Connor gives the
reader in their descriptions, there is not much similarities happening. However, under the surface of
these characters the reader can see that both characters are somewhat shallow and do not see this about
themselves. Hulga, even though she is highly educated she is a believer in nothing, all she knows is
what to say and when to say it. This becomes obvious when

Relationship Between William And Dorothy Wordsworth
William and Dorothy Wordsworths literary relationship has many different aspects to it but Dorothy
was never as famous as her brother. By using feminist theory we can truly understand their
relationship between the brother and sister and the linking in their writings. By looking at William s
poem I wandered lonely as a cloud which is also known as The daffodils and Dorothy s Grasmere
Journal a deep connection is also shown. Both William and his sister Dorothy were great writers, but
William seemed to have out shone his sister. By using feminist theory one might see exactly why
William received more fame than his sister. One might also see why William got this fame by using
historical criticism. By using these two particular schools of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is clear that the two were in the field that day and they both saw very similar things which the also
interpreted very similarly. When we compare William s poem and Dorothy s journal we can see both
comparisons and contrasts between the texts. The different comparisons we see may help us
understand why Dorothy did not achieve such fame as her brother had. Dorothy s description of the
text is very natural as she is simply describing what she saw and how she saw it then and there. When
she first saw the daffodils she simply says When we were in the woods beyond Gowbarrow park we
saw a few daffodils close to the water side. We fancied that the lake had floated the seeds ashore and
that the little colony had so sprung up. (Journals of Dorothy Wordsworth: The Alfoxden Journal 1798,
The Grasmere Journals 1800 1803). When William describes the field full of Daffodils he uses a great
deal of description to emphasis the beauty of the flowers and to make it clear about how he felt. In
contrast to Dorothy s initial reaction to the daffodils William says When all at once I saw a crowd, A
host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
(William Wordsworth, I wandered lonely as a cloud , 1807). It is clear that that William and Dorothy
had very different writing techniques. Dorothy has a plain and simple flow to her writings whereas
William has a dramatic and descriptive style. This is a clear contrast between the two

Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi Essay
Captivity in Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi, is a strongly emphasized theme. Fideaus the
protagonist is constantly constrained and surveilled within the realms of the Egyptian society
subsequently being emotionally, and twice literally, captive. The significance of captivity in Woman at
Point Zero is not only for plot or dramatic effect. In the writing of Woman At Point Zero Nawal El
Saadawi wishes to inform the reader about the captivity felt by some women in suppressive countries.
In this way, she means the protagonist Firdaus to not only represent one woman but many. Captivity in
Woman at Point Zero is not only that of the literal, lock and key. Throughout the novel Firdaus is
subject to varying forms of captivity, emotionally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On describing her captivity in marriage Firdaus also states A virtuous woman was not supposed to
complain about her husband, her duty was perfect obedience. , thus, in order to be good one must be
totally submissive. This description of a virtuous woman shows how ingrained social expectations
were in the society of 1970 s , if one must be perfectly obedient to one other person at all times, then
obviously they are captive in both expectations and duty, a duty that was for Firdaus, forced upon her.
The captivity is not physical, but rather mental and inflicted onto Firdaus from societal expectations.
Firdaus later reflects upon the captivity she felt in her marriage stating I would rather be a free
prostitute than an enslaved wife. The adjective enslaved shows that Firdaus believes wives to be,
literal slaves, captive in their marriage. Stating she would prefer to be a prostitute instead of a wife is
shocking to a western reader, as generally being a wife is thought to be freer and safer than having to
sell your body. Al Sadawi in this phrase not only shocks the reader, but further introduces the reader to
the foreign paradigm of a middle eastern wife and the sheer desperation due to captivity experienced.
Literal captivity in Firdauses life is experienced under Bayoumi, who entraps Firdaus and prevents her
from having physical and emotional freedom as he traps her in his apartment, using her a sex object
for himself and his

Othello Definition Of A Hero Essay
Nowadays, society has evolved in different directions when it comes to defining a hero.
Some individuals may see a hero as someone who is known for their good deeds and remarkable super
powers like the ones that are shown today in films. Even though, this can be true to a certain extent,
these qualities are not the only ones that are used to compose the ideal hero. As society has progressed
throughout the years, the characterization of who a hero is has also transformed in terms of the
protagonist itself. (Heroes). During the 1600s, the protagonist was not seen as the hero of the play or
poems like shown in William Shakespeare s tragedy, Othello and the epic poem Paradise Lost written
by John Milton. Based on both of these literary selections, the heroes can be demonstrated by the
villains Iago and Satan who in both the play and epic poem transformed the stereotype of the
protagonist always being the hero to be false. As the tragedy play of Othello begins, ... Show more

Iago begins to mislead Rodrigo into believing that Cassio has an affair with Desdemona, and
therefore, manipulates him to aggravate Cassio so he could leave the position Othello has granted him,

(Database Name). At a certain point Shakespeare guarantees to validate Iago s actions, and for this
reason, the audience can justify that his plan is acceptable because he did not get promoted to be a
lieutenant, which he was worthy of. In this case, the way Iago presents the heroic values among
society today would be by supremacy because although the plan is difficult to proceed he still
managed to show that the ideal leader takes charge no matter the circumstance in that particular

Swat Team Research Paper
America was first introduced to the first SWAT teams in the year of 1966. SWAT, which first stood for
Special Weapons Attack Team, and then was later changed to Special Weapons and Tactics, was
founded by Daryl Gates who was a police commander for the Los Angeles Police Department. SWAT
teams are different from regular law enforcement in the fact that they are far more advanced and
handle far more advanced and dangerous situations. They use more powerful weapons and more
experienced policing tactics. They could be considered the elite members of law enforcement. SWAT
teams do not just deal with the normal criminal. They handle the extreme criminals who often defy
law enforcement. SWAT teams were founded in an effort the lower the massively high crime rate that
was dominating the late 1990s. These specially trained police officers are an example of the
paramilitary policing which also first arose during this time period. Paramilitary policing can be

The Importance Of Happiness Is The Key To A Perfect Life
I once was told by my mother, happiness is the key to a perfect life . Throughout my life, I have
carried that statement in my heart. Those few words have taught me how valuable the little things in
life truly are. Some of the little things in life that allow me to be the happiest person I can be are the
following: My boyfriend Dominic, family, my dog Riley, and Netflix. Dominic brings out my
happiness by always makes sure I don t go a minute without smiling. If it wasn t for my family, I
wouldn t be where I am today and I m incredibly happy with how much they push me to be the best I
can be. When I m sad, my dog always knows how to cheer me up by licking my tears away or she lays
next to me and watches Netflix. Netflix makes me happy due to the fact that I don t have to do
anything but lay back and enjoy a funny movie or show with the people I love. These things are what
make my world go around every day.
Anytime that I am feeling stressed or down, Netflix cheers me up. Netflix allows me to sit back and
relax. Watching the tv provider, allows me to forget all my problems, and allows me to watch other
people have problems. Netflix to me is like a bottle of milk to a baby because its calms me down,
takes the stress away, and overall just makes me a happier person. The best part about watching
Netflix is when my dog Riley lays next to me to watch the other animals on the tv.
The best part of life, is owning an animal. Animals, such as dogs, are proven to help relieve stress

Differences Between American Culture And Indian Culture
Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything
from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. The cultures around the world are very
different and very much the alike at the same time. On the other hand, some similarities also lie
between two nations. While the culture of America is a mixture of different cultures, the Indian culture
is unique and has its own values. There are many types of differences lies between American culture
and Indian culture in terms of Religions, Languages, Rituals and Cuisines. Religious is a set of
common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people that is usually separated by rituals
and religious laws. There are so many cultures within each country. India is one of the most
religiously diverse country in the world with one of the most deeply religious societies and cultures.
Religion plays a central and definitive role in the life of many of its people. The religions that
originated in the Indian subcontinents are Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and
Christianity. The most of India s population is Hindu which contributes towards the 70% of the
population. Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world. It was developed about 5000 years
ago. Hinduism is a colorful religion with a lot of rituals. People who follow this religion believe in a
lot of Gods and Goddesses. About 12% of India s population is Islam. This is a religion which was not

Key Resources And Capabilities Of Philips
Key Resources Capabilities
Philips
Philips has thrived on its technological prowess, which is a result of their strong focus on research and
development. Specifically, Philips maintains a product focused strategy and their highly decentralized
National Organizations allow them to adapt to different market conditions globally. Human capital has
historically been a key resource for the company, as they focused on caring for their workers and
coordinating business efforts in a cross functional environment (i.e. technical and marketing managers
working on projects together), but frequent leadership turnover and seemingly endless turnaround
efforts have weakened this valuable capability. It is arguable, however, that the cross functional
culture is still active at Philips and most of the top management team has completed foreign tours of
duty.
Matsushita
In contrast to Philips, Matsushita s success stems from highly efficient and centralized operations.
Also unlike Philips, Matsushita s numerous domestic retail outlets in Japan are ideal for the sale and
distribution of their products and provide valuable market research opportunities and capabilities.
Both the structure and culture at Matsushita encourage an entrepreneurial drive in their employees and
divisions, as they compete for funds to develop new products, and extraordinary communication exists
between the international operations and the home office in Japan.

The Annual Women And Fair Trade Festival Essay
On a crisp morning this past fall, cooperatives from around the world set up shop in an Austin, Texas,
church for the annual Women and Fair Trade Festival. While most of the vendors were veterans of
collective organizing, one group of single immigrant mothers used the festival to debut their food
cooperative, Cooperativa Posada.
Three Mexican women Silvia, Elideth, and Erika and a Guatemalan woman named Hilda spent a near
sleepless night preparing dozens of their distinct regional varieties of tamales, some wrapped in corn
husks and others in moist banana leaves. Nebat, the lone Ethiopian member of the cooperative,
prepared some luscious, dark, traditional Ethiopian coffee by roasting the beans on a metal plate over
an open flame, then grinding them by hand.
The products of their labor were not only nourishment for the festival attendees (who lined up for a
taste), but also an attempt to raise the awareness and donations needed for their cooperative to
succeed. On a broader level, the tamales and coffee represented the mothers efforts to create an
opportunity for self sufficiency, to foster collective economic empowerment, and to forge a path
forward for themselves and their families.
All the Cooperativa Posada members currently live or have lived at Posada Esperanza in Austin, a
shelter for homeless immigrant mothers and their children. The shelter houses 16 families, most of
whom are undocumented immigrants or asylum seekers from Latin America and Africa who have fled

What is the Domino Theory? The Domino Theory was a cold war policy that suggested a communist

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Introducing...
The euro was introduced as a single currency as it offered many advantages over the previous situation
where each European country had its own currency. One of the main objectives of introducing the
euro was to strengthen relations between member states. The idea, rather a simple one, if you get
countries to trade with each other then they are a lot less likely to go to war. It seems a legitimate
reason, as Western Europe has been at peace now for nearly seventy years and counting.
To explain a little more about the history of introducing the euro, throughout the 1960s on to the 1980s
the EEC helped break down cultural barriers between European countries. This resulted in a boom ,

One downside is that the interest rates set by the ECB may not be suitable for the whole Eurozone. It
may be unsuitable for countries that are growing much faster or slower than the Eurozone average. In,
2011, the ECB increased inflation rates because of fears of inflation in Germany, however during the
same time, southern Eurozone countries were heading for recession because the interest rates set were
unsuitable for countries such as Portugal Greece and Italy.
There is also a lack of incentives being apart of the Eurozone as it is argued being a member protects a
country form currency crisis. Therefore, there is less of an incentive for countries to implement
structural reform and fiscal responsibility. For example, in good times Greece was able to benefit from
very low bond yields on its debt because people thought that the Greek debt would be taken and
secured by the rest of Europe, but this wasn t the case and Greece fell victim to a false sense of
security.
Also the Eurozone is not an optimal currency area due to language barriers. For example if a state in
the New York was facing a recession workers could easily move to New England to get a job,
however in the Eurozone this is much more difficult. There are a lot more barriers to the movement of
labour and capital in Europe. An unemployed Greek cannot easily move to

Sociological Ambivalence Toward Childhood Essay
Final Question 2:
Almost every parent has told their child life isn t fair. As a society, we notice situations where
decisions made are not always reasonable. When it comes to children, however, being equal and
objective are not always priorities. There are two distinct cultures divided by age, adult s culture and
children s culture. Adults are people 18 years of age and older, where children refer to anyone under
18. This difference in the two cultures can be seen in the history of the social sciences where who is
researched and who is listened to impacts the way people view adults and children.
Throughout history, adults have not researched or documented information about children. Suzanne
Shanahan wrote in her article, Lost and Found: The Sociological Ambivalence Toward Childhood,
using the American Journal of Sociology as just one indicator, we see that as of 1980 only 5% of the
published articles made referenced to children, and again ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author Malcolm Hill mentioned in the article Children s Voices on Ways of Having a Voice:
Children s and young people s perspectives on methods used in research and consultation, while a few
children appeared mainly concerned that their own views were ignored, many were eager (like
statisticians) to see that research and consultation should be representative (Hill, 2011:77). Children
are starting to represent the material titled with children and childhood. As a collective group, the
children wanted the ability to give their perspective on the approach of how projects are done, and
how they are understood, using the children as experts of the subject childhood. Adults did not need to
speak for children nor did they need to interpret the parts of the research the children were a part of.

Sustainability Reporting Of The United States
Abstract
Sustainability reporting in the United States is still a work in progress. While more countries around
the world are requiring companies to report the effects of their business activities as part of their
annual report, this practice is still voluntary in the US. Even though sustainability reporting is not
required, companies generally disclose sustainable information on their websites or through social
media. Being social responsible builds a certain type of bond that brings internal and external
stakeholders together.
Many companies in the US have taken action and developed their corporate governance model that
will meet their needs as well as the needs of the people around them, thus creating a better
environment for shareholders and stakeholders. Currently, most companies that issue sustainability
reporting follow the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards guidelines. The GRI standards are
designed to achieve transparency, and it has become the most common set of standards used amongst
organizations for sustainability reporting.
This research paper was written with the purpose of providing some answers as to why sustainability
reporting in the United States should be mandated by regulators. The paper briefly describes the GRI
standards and guidelines, the benefits of sustainability reporting, some relative advantages limitations
in adopting sustainability reporting, as well as provides a few examples of companies that have

Pride And Prejudice By Pride Essay
The Effects of Pride Pride is the feeling of satisfaction when someone achieve something, someone
close to you achieves something, or something somebody owns or has is admired by others. Being
proud of yourself or someone else is not always bad. However, some believe pride is negative and can
change how a person thinks and feels about certain things. It can be taken either way depending on
who, why, and when it is. Many people have written articles and have done research to determine
whether it is negative or positive. In the novel, Pride and Prejudice, pride is seen throughout the story
in people with a lot of money and with good looks. Different things can determine whether pride is
good or bad. Many studies have been done by psychologists to determine whether pride is a sin or just
an adaptive social emotion. A study was done at Northeastern University by two people, David
Desteno and Lisa Williams, who did a research report on their results. The experiment examined the
ability of pride to serve as an adaptive emotion within the context of social interaction (Desteno and
Williams 284). Pride is often viewed as a deadly sin and high moral behavior (Desteno and Williams).
They believe the function of pride is to motivate hedonically costly efforts aimed at acquiring skills
that increase one s status and value to one s status and value to one s social group (Desteno and
Williams). In their study, they took sixty two individuals and separated them into same sex groups

Theme Of Transition In A P
One of the most constant rites in the life of man is the transition. Human beings, in their daily
endeavors, are forced to transition from one stage of life to another, including transiting from life to
death. Transition exposes one to real life situations, which without maturity may lead to unexpected
consequences. In the story of A P, through the main character Sammy, John Updike reveals how the
transition could be fatal depending on the level of maturity. The story seems to begin when three
young women walk into A P; a local grocery store located in Northern Boston town, five miles from
the beach; where Sammy works as a cashier, wearing nothing else except their bathing suits. Their
attire immediately attracts the attention of most male workers in the grocery, having an immense effect
on the young teenage man Sammy. Lengel, Sammy s manager, reprimands the ladies, expressing to
them that their attire was inappropriate, and next time they visit the ... Show more content on

would like to do unless his parents or people like Lengel approve them. For instance, working at A P
was his parents decision. And for the first time, he desires to transition from this state of life to adult
life. He began to understand that he will never become someone s hero by doing what his parents or
Lengel expected him to do. Therefore, the crisis period presents him as a very reflective person. While
this kind of realization was important for him, his immaturity led him to make the wrong decision, for
wrong motives. Sammy openly quits his job with intention of getting the attention of girls whom he
does not know their whereabouts. Updike brings out Sammy as immature not capable of making a

Laws In Antigone By Sophocles
Throughout the play of Antigone as seen in Sophocles by Robert Fables, there are various instances
displaying the importance of the laws of the gods versus the laws of the people for the character,
Antigone. She often chose to obey the godly laws more so than those made by man, Creon in
particular. Antigone prioritized godly laws over manly laws in regards to her own living and decision
making, thus setting an example for us all if for the common good. Antigone stated that she will stand
by her choices no matter the consequences or circumstances if it meant she was obeying the laws of
the gods. As it says on page 82 lines 509 511, These laws I was not about to break them, not of fear of

Benjamin Church As A Hero Analysis
A hero is a person who believes that their enemy is not inherently malevolent, but also has wit and
bravery. Benjamin Church is that hero, he was an Englishman who went from leading a small group of
men to leading an army. Church was brave, when he gets hurt he risks his life for the sake of the
mission. After a little while he returned to battle for the sake of the army even though he was not fully
recovered, and when he left war to be with his family he went back. Church also had compassion,
when an Englishmen enslaved or killed an innocent Indian he would get mad because he believes that
not all Indians are malevolent. Thirdly Church had wit, his ideas of building an army is what won the
war for Plymouth and saved key alliances for building ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His ideas of building an army and attacking is what brought the war to an end. Church was an
intelligent man, his decision to recruit friendly Indians into his army was a good move because the
Indians and Englishmen could play to their strengths and have less weaknesses than their opponents
because of their diversity. When Church was returning to war he refused an offer of command because
he had a proposal of his own. Church said that if they were to end the war by conquering the enemy,
he insisted that they must make a business of the war as the enemy did. (Philbrick 297). He meant that
instead of worrying about how much money was being spent, but that the Plymouth officials should
give him three hundred men of which a third of the men were Indians. He gives them six weeks and
they will do good service. After he got the approval he did start doing good, and it was his army that
killed Philip and brought the war to an end. Church and his army received the preeminent trophy by
[Philips] head was brought into Plymouth in great triumph, (Philbrick 338). The church record says
Philip had been slain two or three days before, so that in the day of our praises our eyes saw the
salvation of God. (Philbrick 338). This quote proves that bringing Philips head into Plymouth meant
that the war was won and over, all because of Church s army. Church could also notice things when no
one else could, he was meeting with the Awashonks because he wanted them as allies in his army.
when they were drinking rum to the sachems health. Church could tell by the way the sachem watched

calabash, Church poured some rum into his palm, slurped it down, and raising up the guard, took yet
another good swig, (Philbrick 314). Church noticing and how quick he was to act on it was very good.

county fairs, but the Iowa State Fair is the biggest fair of them all. People from all around the state and
even throughout the country come here to show off their accomplishments, listen to live music, camp,

Introducing Systems Theory, Marriage And Family Therapists
Introducing Systems Theory
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) in training are tasked with helping a family work through
conflict and arrive and more intimate and interdependent relationships, which can seem daunting or
maybe even terrifying. However, the interaction patterns that show up in families can find some
context and clarity for a therapist who knows systems theory. Systems theory suggests that individuals
cannot be understood in isolation from their family context because families create relational
processes and generate a sequence of interactions and behaviors in order to maintain dynamic stability
of the self regulating family system (Nichols, 2013, pp. 58 59). How does this general systems theory
help an MFT guide a family in therapy? In this paper I will take three systems theory principles and
apply them to a movie in order to demonstrate how it provides a language and context for MFTs, thus
making it an essential tool in family therapy.
I will begin with a brief synopsis of Demme s movie, Rachel Getting Married (2008), and its primary
family characters. Next I will discuss three key principles of systems theory and use the movie
characters interactions as examples for each corresponding principle. In the conclusion I will share my
learning experience in doing this assignment.
The Movie Synopsis
Rachel Getting Married (Demme, 2008) is about Kym, the estranged daughter, return home to her
upscale Connecticut family for her sister Rachel s wedding after

In comparing thoughts of John Stuart Mill when he discusses the rights of the collective vs the individual and his idea of the harm principle one can come to understand that government is not able to control peoples actions unless they are causing harm to other individuals. Throughout the paper, I wish to draw on Mill s other works including Considerations on Representative Government by Mill, and On Liberty by Mill as well as secondary external sources regarding the rights of citizens, and the universality of rights. Mill bases his theory based on morality and freedom, however, one argument against his theory of the harm principle is that every individual has different levels of morality and freedoms. John Stuart Mill s idea of the harm principle argues that the government may only justifiably interfere in individual actions to prevent harm, or the threat of harm, to others, or to the greater community. Mill s argument is designed to protect the greater collective society from what he states are individual actions that could prove to be detrimental for the state, including the use of addictive drugs and suicide. Mill states that this is the only time that the government should interview with the actions of the individual within society because of it, for Mills, is an example that would bring a concern to others, and harm. Most Americans are provided with some form of insurance either through their employer or an individual plan which is part of a public program such as Medicaid or Medicare. However, there are still 45 million people who lack coverage (Melisa Paradis, Janelle Wood, Mary Cramer, 2009). Four U.S. citizens the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens; a Foreign Service information management officer, and two other U.S. personnel died when members of the radical Islamist group called Ansar al Sharia, one of many extremist Salafi groups, clashed with security forces in Benghazi after protesting near the U.S. consulate. According to demonstrators participating in the protests and ousting of the militias, Libyans have had enough of extremists a year after ousting long time dictator Muammar Gaddafi, especially after the recent attacks. On the other side, those who are pro Ansar al Sharia protested in support of the extremist group, justifying the killing of the Americans with the offense the U.S. had committed against Islam with the release of the now notorious film. After protests calmed and subsided (at least in the media), on the other side of the Atlantic ocean, many criticized President Obama of his handling of the attacks in Benghazi. Many on the conservative right accused him of being an apologist for Islamic terrorism and the killing of the four Americans. This became a hot topic in the presidential debates in October, when presidential candidate Mitt romney accused Obama of having gone on an apology tour, where President Obama apologized to other nations for American behavior, particularly in the case of the anti Islamic film. He referenced a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, which stated that it condemned efforts to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims, and that they firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others. • 8. Theme Of Redemption And Good Country People By Flannery O... Flannery O Connor s stories A Good Man Is Hard to Find , and Good Country People both present very similar themes. Within these stories is the theme of redemption, and the way relationships affect the way people interact with each other seem to be a core issue she struggles with. Both stories have a protagonist that have to deal with some type of villain who has little to no belief, while their presence of faith that there is good in people gets them into the horrible situations that they find themselves in. She uses some of the same aspects in both stories in very different ways. The characters are a big part of her stories, the conflicts that arise in the story, and the symbolism that is used. This paper will explore how faith can lead us to have false hope and why it is important to remain aware. In both stories there are seemingly different protagonist. First there is Hulga. She is someone that rude, harsh, with Doctorate in Philosophy, and is appalled by the idea of love. Then you have a grandmother, who is always looking back on the old days and a slight sense of wonder. From what O Connor gives the reader in their descriptions, there is not much similarities happening. However, under the surface of these characters the reader can see that both characters are somewhat shallow and do not see this about themselves. Hulga, even though she is highly educated she is a believer in nothing, all she knows is what to say and when to say it. This becomes obvious when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By using feminist theory we can truly understand their relationship between the brother and sister and the linking in their writings. By looking at William s poem I wandered lonely as a cloud which is also known as The daffodils and Dorothy s Grasmere Journal a deep connection is also shown. It is clear that the two were in the field that day and they both saw very similar things which the also interpreted very similarly. When we compare William s poem and Dorothy s journal we can see both comparisons and contrasts between the texts. The different comparisons we see may help us understand why Dorothy did not achieve such fame as her brother had. Dorothy s description of the text is very natural as she is simply describing what she saw and how she saw it then and there. When she first saw the daffodils she simply says When we were in the woods beyond Gowbarrow park we saw a few daffodils close to the water side. We fancied that the lake had floated the seeds ashore and that the little colony had so sprung up. (Journals of Dorothy Wordsworth: The Alfoxden Journal 1798, The Grasmere Journals 1800 1803). When William describes the field full of Daffodils he uses a great deal of description to emphasis the beauty of the flowers and to make it clear about how he felt. In contrast to Dorothy s initial reaction to the daffodils William says When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. (William Wordsworth, I wandered lonely as a cloud , 1807). It is clear that that William and Dorothy had very different writing techniques. Dorothy has a plain and simple flow to her writings whereas William has a dramatic and descriptive style. This is a clear contrast between the two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On describing her captivity in marriage Firdaus also states A virtuous woman was not supposed to complain about her husband, her duty was perfect obedience. , thus, in order to be good one must be totally submissive. This description of a virtuous woman shows how ingrained social expectations were in the society of 1970 s , if one must be perfectly obedient to one other person at all times, then obviously they are captive in both expectations and duty, a duty that was for Firdaus, forced upon her. The captivity is not physical, but rather mental and inflicted onto Firdaus from societal expectations. Firdaus later reflects upon the captivity she felt in her marriage stating I would rather be a free prostitute than an enslaved wife. The adjective enslaved shows that Firdaus believes wives to be, literal slaves, captive in their marriage. Stating she would prefer to be a prostitute instead of a wife is shocking to a western reader, as generally being a wife is thought to be freer and safer than having to sell your body. Al Sadawi in this phrase not only shocks the reader, but further introduces the reader to the foreign paradigm of a middle eastern wife and the sheer desperation due to captivity experienced. Literal captivity in Firdauses life is experienced under Bayoumi, who entraps Firdaus and prevents her from having physical and emotional freedom as he traps her in his apartment, using her a sex object for himself and his ... • 11. Othello Definition Of A Hero Essay Nowadays, society has evolved in different directions when it comes to defining a hero. Some individuals may see a hero as someone who is known for their good deeds and remarkable super powers like the ones that are shown today in films. Even though, this can be true to a certain extent, these qualities are not the only ones that are used to compose the ideal hero. As society has progressed throughout the years, the characterization of who a hero is has also transformed in terms of the protagonist itself. (Heroes). During the 1600s, the protagonist was not seen as the hero of the play or poems like shown in William Shakespeare s tragedy, Othello and the epic poem Paradise Lost written by John Milton. Based on both of these literary selections, the heroes can be demonstrated by the villains Iago and Satan who in both the play and epic poem transformed the stereotype of the protagonist always being the hero to be false. At a certain point Shakespeare guarantees to validate Iago s actions, and for this reason, the audience can justify that his plan is acceptable because he did not get promoted to be a lieutenant, which he was worthy of. In this case, the way Iago presents the heroic values among society today would be by supremacy because although the plan is difficult to proceed he still managed to show that the ideal leader takes charge no matter the circumstance in that particular ... SWAT, which first stood for Special Weapons Attack Team, and then was later changed to Special Weapons and Tactics, was founded by Daryl Gates who was a police commander for the Los Angeles Police Department. SWAT teams are different from regular law enforcement in the fact that they are far more advanced and handle far more advanced and dangerous situations. They use more powerful weapons and more experienced policing tactics. They could be considered the elite members of law enforcement. SWAT teams do not just deal with the normal criminal. • 18. The Annual Women And Fair Trade Festival Essay On a crisp morning this past fall, cooperatives from around the world set up shop in an Austin, Texas, church for the annual Women and Fair Trade Festival. While most of the vendors were veterans of collective organizing, one group of single immigrant mothers used the festival to debut their food cooperative, Cooperativa Posada. Three Mexican women Silvia, Elideth, and Erika and a Guatemalan woman named Hilda spent a near sleepless night preparing dozens of their distinct regional varieties of tamales, some wrapped in corn husks and others in moist banana leaves. Nebat, the lone Ethiopian member of the cooperative, prepared some luscious, dark, traditional Ethiopian coffee by roasting the beans on a metal plate over an open flame, then grinding them by hand. The products of their labor were not only nourishment for the festival attendees (who lined up for a taste), but also an attempt to raise the awareness and donations needed for their cooperative to succeed. On a broader level, the tamales and coffee represented the mothers efforts to create an opportunity for self sufficiency, to foster collective economic empowerment, and to forge a path forward for themselves and their families. The euro was introduced as a single currency as it offered many advantages over the previous situation where each European country had its own currency. One of the main objectives of introducing the euro was to strengthen relations between member states. It seems a legitimate reason, as Western Europe has been at peace now for nearly seventy years and counting. This difference in the two cultures can be seen in the history of the social sciences where who is researched and who is listened to impacts the way people view adults and children. Throughout history, adults have not researched or documented information about children. Pride And Prejudice By Pride Essay The Effects of Pride Pride is the feeling of satisfaction when someone achieve something, someone close to you achieves something, or something somebody owns or has is admired by others. Being proud of yourself or someone else is not always bad. However, some believe pride is negative and can change how a person thinks and feels about certain things. It can be taken either way depending on who, why, and when it is. Many people have written articles and have done research to determine whether it is negative or positive. In the novel, Pride and Prejudice, pride is seen throughout the story in people with a lot of money and with good looks. Different things can determine whether pride is good or bad. Many studies have been done by psychologists to determine whether pride is a sin or just an adaptive social emotion. A study was done at Northeastern University by two people, David Desteno and Lisa Williams, who did a research report on their results. The experiment examined the ability of pride to serve as an adaptive emotion within the context of social interaction (Desteno and Williams 284). Pride is often viewed as a deadly sin and high moral behavior (Desteno and Williams). They believe the function of pride is to motivate hedonically costly efforts aimed at acquiring skills that increase one s status and value to one s status and value to one s social group (Desteno and Williams). When Church was returning to war he refused an offer of command because he had a proposal of his own. Church said that if they were to end the war by conquering the enemy, he insisted that they must make a business of the war as the enemy did. (Philbrick 297). He meant that instead of worrying about how much money was being spent, but that the Plymouth officials should give him three hundred men of which a third of the men were Indians. He gives them six weeks and they will do good service. After he got the approval he did start doing good, and it was his army that killed Philip and brought the war to an end. Church and his army received the preeminent trophy by [Philips] head was brought into Plymouth in great triumph, (Philbrick 338). The church record says Philip had been slain two or three days before, so that in the day of our praises our eyes saw the salvation of God. (Philbrick 338). This quote proves that bringing Philips head into Plymouth meant that the war was won and over, all because of Church s army. Church could also notice things when no one else could, he was meeting with the Awashonks because he wanted them as allies in his army. when they were drinking rum to the sachems health. Church could tell by the way the sachem watched him drink, she suspected that Church poisoned the rum. When the sachem refused to take the calabash, Church poured some rum into his palm, slurped it down, and raising up the guard, took yet another good swig, (Philbrick 314). Church noticing and how quick he was to act on it was very good. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Iowa Culture Research Paper If I were to explain Iowa s culture and history to travelers by taking them to different events and locations, I would take them two places including the Iowa Great Lakes and the Viking Drive In in Ventura, Iowa. I would also take them to 3 different events in Iowa including the Iowa State Fair, Ragbrai, and Tree Town. The Iowa State Fair is a big part of the culture of Iowa and has been for centuries. 1854 was the first year of the Iowa State Fair and ever since then it has been a can not miss date on many Iowans calendars. Every year the fair is held for ten days in the middle of August. Many counties in Iowa hold county fairs, but the Iowa State Fair is the biggest fair of them all. People from all around the state and even throughout the country come here to show off their accomplishments, listen to live music, camp, and have fun at the Thrill Park. Just last year, over a million people visited the fair throughout the ten days of activities. Many kids that I go to school with prepare for this week all year round. They raise and take care of different animals such as pigs and cows and show them at their local county fair and then if they get selected as one of the top participants, they get to go on to show their animal at the Iowa State Fair. You can also go to the state fair for creating art, projects, and photography. They have all the outstanding artwork of the kids on display for everyone to see. The talent that the kids have is just remarkable. The Iowa State fair is a great place to see the culture and even the history of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Introducing Systems Theory, Marriage And Family Therapists Introducing Systems Theory Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) in training are tasked with helping a family work through conflict and arrive and more intimate and interdependent relationships, which can seem daunting or maybe even terrifying. However, the interaction patterns that show up in families can find some context and clarity for a therapist who knows systems theory. Systems theory suggests that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from their family context because families create relational processes and generate a sequence of interactions and behaviors in order to maintain dynamic stability of the self regulating family system (Nichols, 2013, pp. 58 59). How does this general systems theory help an MFT guide a family in therapy? In this paper I will take three systems theory principles and apply them to a movie in order to demonstrate how it provides a language and context for MFTs, thus making it an essential tool in family therapy. I will begin with a brief synopsis of Demme s movie, Rachel Getting Married (2008), and its primary family characters. Next I will discuss three key principles of systems theory and use the movie characters interactions as examples for each corresponding principle. In the conclusion I will share my learning experience in doing this assignment. The Movie Synopsis Rachel Getting Married (Demme, 2008) is about Kym, the estranged daughter, return home to her upscale Connecticut family for her sister Rachel s wedding after ...
