Internal Conflict In Sue Kidd s The Secret Life Of Bees
In the novel The Secret Life of Bees (2001), Sue Kidd creates a character, Terrence Ray Owens, that
serves as the epitome of internal conflict. Kidd is able to show Terrence s internal conflict through
through a flashback from Lily s friend August, and a series of violent actions inflicted on his daughter
Lily. Kidd s purpose in this novel is to display the ramifications of a broken home dynamic, in order to
show how forgiveness to oneself and others is truly the first step to finding happiness. It doesn t take
us the readers long to find out that T. Ray is an abusive parent, but it does take us a little longer to
discover why he is the way he his. Going in chronological order of the discoveries within the book, T.
Ray s main three sources of internal conflict which produces external conflict with his daughter is the
result of his background of war, his wife running away and eventually dying, and his daughter running
away as well. Working backwards, August s introduction into the book and the knowledge she has on
Lily s family divulges quite a lot about T. Ray than Lily is aware of. As we the readers find out, T. Ray
served as a combatant during the Vietnam War and returned to Tiburon in 1964, the year the book is
set in. Drawing on contemporary knowledge, the Vietnam War was a highly controversial and overall
bloody war that caused massive civil unrest. These facts mixed with whatever traumatic experiences
that T. Ray endured during the war serves as the first source of

Tropical Rainforest In Brazil
Long, long ago, in a lively and vibrant tropical rainforest in Brazil, there lived three birds. First, there
was Kiwi the parrot. He was the most beautiful bird in all of Brazil. His colorful feathers and bright
plumage never failed to turn heads. Next, there was Victor the peacock. His gorgeous royal blue color
and alluring tail feathers attracted all of the females. Last, and probably least, there was Toko the
toucan. He had dull, dark feathers, and a short, ugly beak. Because of this, poor Toko had no friends
and endured a lot of teasing. One day, when the forest habitat was buzzing with activity, Toko decided
to go get some food. On his way, he saw Kiwi and Victor. He tried to say hi, but they drowned him out
with jeers. Oh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Boring old Kiwi and his annoying sidekick Victor. I guess you re the ugly ones now. Soon, Toko
began bragging and making all the other birds feel awful, just like the way Kiwi and Victor had made

flew up to him and said, Goddess Dalia wants to see you in the cave. Kiwi looked inexplicable happy,
and Toko was confused. Why would Dalia want to see him? Toko flew to the cave of the gods to find
Dalia waiting. She did not look happy. In fact, she looked quite the opposite. She glared at him. She
launched into her argument as soon as he came in. You went against my ONE CONDITION! You brag

self obsessed, narcissistic ways anymore. This is it! I am going to change you back to how you looked

involved in an offense, for 46 different Group A offenses and 11 different Group B offenses (2). Even
though the NIBRS had more details, and came as a way to solve the problems that the UCR had, the
NIBRS still has its fair share of problems leading us to be cautious about this method. One of the first
problems that this system has to do with the procedures that captures it, and this leads to why we must
be cautious about this methods. The procedure involves the crime to be initially reported to the police.
This beginning procedure already has a problem, and according to James, the problem is, the NIBRS
collect data on the number of offenses known to law enforcement each year. However, not all crimes
that occur are known to the police (2). The procedure that is used in NIBRS to get the number of
crimes begins initially with the crime being reported to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example law enforcement may interpret and process a crime like a burglary as a crime of
trespassing, so this leads inaccuracy. James gives a good example of this, For example, if a local law
enforcement agency does not closely follow UCR or NIBRS definitions, the agency might classify an
assault against a woman as an attempted rape, or a trespass as a burglary (22). Many times local
enforcement agencies do not follow the definitions of the NIBRS in the interpretation of crime, and
this leads to crime rates in different categories to be skewed. Another problem with the NIBRS is the
organization (FBI) that interprets crimes does not include many types of crimes, and these crimes are
many times white collar crimes. According to James, the NIBRS most likely undercounts corporate
and occupational crimes (22). The next time of crime measurement has many problems as well, and

Doctrine Of Judicial Precedent
The doctrine of judicial precedent form part of the Malaysia system. The legal is one of the general
characteristics of the English legal system. Judicial precedent is a decision of a higher court that will
be binding on a lower court in hierarchy. The doctrine of judicial precedent is also called stare
decisis. The judges will follow the decision or judgement of the previous cases if the facts and law are
similar. For example,Federal Court s decision is binding on Court of Appeal. This means like cases are
treated a like . Precedent may consist of ratio decidendi, obiter dicta and res judicata.Ratio decidendi
means the reason for the decision.lt can be explained as the legitimate reasoning upon which the
judgement in a specific case and the judges may use it in the future cases if the facts of the case is
similar.Sir Rupert Cross defines the ratio decidendi as any rule expressly or impliedly treated by the
judge as a necessary step in searching his conclusion. Obiter dicta means things said by the way, in
Latin phrase. Obiter dicta are anything else said about the law such as remarks, further observations
and opinions on other matters made by the judge.Although obiter dicta have no binding powers,it still
can influence the decision of the judges.Res judicata is the final structure of the court ... Show more

It has to be more than trifling. It was confirmed in Chan Fook [1994] that it includes psychological
injury which amounts to a recognised clinical condition and there must be medical evidence to support
it. Mere distress or emotion would not be sufficient. Stan was more than merely depressed. He was
suffering from depression which is a recognised clinical condition and he would have medical
evidence of this so ABH is satisfied.
The word occasioning simply means caused the case of Roberts (1971) denotes that the injury must be

The ABH must be caused by an assault. Here the assault would be a technical assault. A technical
assault was defined in Fagan [1968] as an act by which the defendant intentionally or recklessly
causes another person to apprehend the application to his body of immediate, unlawful force. The AR

Edgar Allan Poe s The Black Cat is the story of a man who battles addiction. Poe uses a variety of
symbolism to portray how the narrator s life spirals out of control due to his inability to maintain his

Analysis Of Girl By Jamaica Kincaid
Society has created in their minds the way a woman is supposed to act and the things they are allowed
to do. In Jamaica Kincaid s Girl , we see a young woman being forced to live by the likeness of the
society in which she dwells. Although this is not the life she wants to live, she has no other choice
than to become the woman she was made to be.
Throughout time the relationship between mothers and daughters have changed. Many mothers hold
on to the old fashioned opinion of what a woman should be and many older women feel that a women
s true role in life is to be domesticated. This idea of a woman s place in the home is being reinforced
throughout Kincaid s short story. The mother in the story is telling her young daughter the ways things
should be done. Wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap; wash the colored
clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry. She further goes on to describe other
household chores and how they should be correctly done. This is how you sweep a corner. She tells
her daughter how to set a table for different meals, how to cook things, and even how to pick out
bread. Unfortunately, though, the story doesn t tell a woman how to have a successful career, to go to
college, or how to work outside of the home. In those days women were expected to stay at home
while their husband s go out to work and make all the money. Even if they tried, they were not
allowed to go outside the way society made them to be and this mother is trying to raise her young
daughter the same way she was raised which is to be a house wife.
Even though the girl says nothing in the story, she is building resentment towards her mother because
she feels that she should be allowed to make her own decision on whether to be domesticated.
Throughout the story never did the mother once stop to get her daughter s input on the issues, she just
simply tells her daughter that she has no other choice but to be domesticated and there is no way of
changing it. She tells the daughter how to act, how to dress, how to talk, and even how to walk.
Always eat your food in a way that it won t turn someone else s stomach...On Sundays try to walk like
a lady and not like the slut that you are

Terminal Cancer
Every minute, two to three people die from cancer ( Cancer Statistics); some do not even know they
have the disease. The world is currently facing a terrible quandary by the name of cancer. This terrible
disease has killed more than five million people since the year 1990 ( Cancer Statistics ). Terminal
cancer is an inevitable death which can last between days and years. Although it is inherent that
terminal cancer leads to death, the assistance of family and friends in addition to the positive mindset
of the one with the disease will contribute to a good spending of the patient s allotment.

This is shown especially when Noah was an FBI informant. The FBI were getting closer to finding out
the identity of Massasoit, who was Noah. To prevent them from discovering that Massasoit was him,
Noah decided to drop hints that directed them to Lucy instead. When Thumps discovers this, he states
So you used Lucy to take heat off yourself (pg 282). Noah was a man who was able to point the blame
to someone else and leave without incriminating himself; this shows that he can come up with clever
ideas to help himself. He shows his geniusness in creating ways to stay safe after Lucy s
disappearance. Once she went missing, the authorities immediately tried to blame Noah. They were
determined to prove Noah guilty ...but when the dust cleared, Ridge was still standing and the police
were left holding air (pg 15). This establishes how Ridge is able to not leave enough evidence to
endanger himself. If something does incriminate him though, he won t hesitate to interfere. This part
of him is presented after Street murders Lucy. Noah ends up hiding the body once he finds it. His
explanation for his behaviour is explained when talking to Thumps. Becoming annoyed with Thumps,
he aggressively states, You don t get it do you? They find Lucy s body the cops don t come looking for

The One-And-Done Rule
The first reason why the one and done rule should be eliminated is because players who leave after
one year of college do not have a secure future without a college degree. A college degree is a very
important part of having a successful career, and although an NBA player already has a job, the
average NBA career only lasts only 4.8 years ( Athlete ). Due to the fact that an NBA career is usually
short, it is important to finish college and have a degree in case a player s career is unexpectedly
ended because of injury. An example of a player who left college after one year was Greg Oden. Oden
attended Ohio State University for one year before declaring for the 2007 NBA draft. Oden was
selected with the first overall pick, but his career has not turned out like many expected it to due to
injury. His career is now at the lowest point it has ever been, and he is now at risk of his career being
over without having earned a degree (Wallace). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the main concerns with a young player is their ability to handle money. Players who come out
of college are given huge paychecks as soon as they are drafted, and this is a big change from college
where players are not paid an annual salary. It is very important that young NBA players are
responsible with their money so it will last after their career is over. During his rookie season, former
one and done player Julius Randle bought a $78,000 Porshe Panamera, which came out of Randle s
rookie salary (Hansford). This purchase showed that Randle might not be mature enough to handle his
salary, and that he needs better spending habits if he wants to be financially secure. Young players not
being able to handle the money given to them is a sign of immaturity that supports that the one and
done rule is not helpful to players

The Importance Of War In The Film Paths Of Glory
When reoriented by the trauma and darkness of war, wisdom shapes an altered perception of the value
of human life, embodying the light of gratitude. The film Paths of Glory, directed by Stanley Kubrick,
dealt with the harsh conditions in the trenches during WW1, and is an exploration of dehumanisation.
The film discreetly questions the authority of superior officers, and the way in which the hierarchy of
the army is depicted. The film was made during the Cold War era, which was the geopolitical rivalry
between US and the Soviet Union. Situated in WW2, Catch 22 is a satirical novel composed by Joseph
Heller, which defines the infuriating, inverted thought processes by which the military runs its soldiers
lives; Any time a soldier discerns a possible route out of the war, there is a catch, and it is always
Catch 22.
Anti war texts construct emotionally challenging and persuasive accounts of condemnation of
darkness and injustice in war. In the film Paths of Glory, Stanley Kubrick creates a visual
condemnation of warfare through his portrayal of injustice. Colonel Dax is the epitome of human
goodness, a characteristic which ironically causes conflict within the context of the military as
demonstrated in the Testimony scene, where Dax makes a powerful statement about the cruelty of the
court case. Dax s sadistic plea condemns the officials of their unjust verdict, however they prevail with
an indifferent reading of the evidence. For Mireau it is the decision to order the

Slavery In Huck Finn
Censorship and history: inherently incompatible
It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger; but I done
it, and I warn t ever sorry for it afterwards, neither (Twain 91). Slavery has been one of the most
influential and shameful institutions in the history of America. From the proliferation of chattel
slavery to its eventual downfall, the peculiar institution of slavery has been a crucial driving force in
the history of the United States. Despite substantial improvement in race relations in America, there is
still tremendous racial tension in American society. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, an
antebellum era novel by Mark Twain, has faced rigid criticism for its use of the n word, but also ...

By exposing Southern hypocrisy and the absurdity of slavery, Twain s novel was pivotal in affecting
Americans perception of black freedmen after the Gilded Age. For example, when Huck befriends Jim
and realizes that they have more in common than that which divides them, Huck exclaims I knowed
he was white inside (Twain 301). Twain s unique satire hides ravaging social commentary behind his
realistic anecdotes, helping further the cause of humanizing beat down slaves, or niggers. Huck Finn is
an iconic novel that must be taught to students in order to ensure our future students do not forget the
enduring struggle of the African American community against prejudice and discrimination nor the
damaging attitudes of intolerant Americans during the antebellum era. Huck Finn is a well crafted,
pragmatic narrative on the horrific consequences of slavery which provides students a bridge to
understanding the far reaching consequences of racism. As articulated by David Bradley on CBS s 60
Minutes segment on Huck Finn, teaching the full, uncensored, shocking novel is the only way to
maximize its message. Removing the n word or banning the novel only prevents teachers and students
from engaging in productive conversations that allow classrooms around the country to accurately
discuss the sensitive topic of race in a safe

The Southwest Is A Region Of The United States
The southwest is a region of the United States that makes our country unique. Without the southwest,
we would undoubtedly lack the spirit, hope, beauty, and truth that this vast region brings to the rest of
the United States as a whole. The southwest represents many things, such as journeying, racism,
violence, the clashing and cooperation of cultures, and spirituality, as well as primitivism and
pastoralism. All of these elements that the Southwest is comprised of is perhaps the reason why the
rest of the country feels so captivated by it; why the southwest is considered a place to find yourself or
to regenerate ; and why literature and film regarding the Southwest has been and continues to be of the
most popular genres. The western film was one of the most popular during the first half of the
twentieth century. Audiences far and wide were mesmerized by actors such as John Wayne and Roy
Rogers, and their roles as heroes who fought to tame the American frontier. This very concept, taming
the frontier , gives way to a larger theme that was prevalent in many western films and literature of the
southwest: ubi sunt, or rather where are those who came before us? . Director Sam Peckinpah s The
Ballad of Cable Hogue portrays this idea better than any other western film; the concept of ubi sunt is
undeniably the film s overarching theme, clearly seen through its components.
By conquering the frontier, characters in western films portray how they, as well as society at this

Chinese Immigrants In The Chinese Must Go
In The Chinese Must Go the cartoonist depicts the Chinese as running with a money bag to China
which symbolizes the American belief that Chinese laundrymen were exploiting the American
economy. The Chinese man is running from San Francisco to China with a bag of money in his hand,
which was likely earned from working in the laundry business, this can be inferred from the cleaning
tool in his arm and the stereotype of Chinese immigrants being laundrymen. This depiction makes
sense given the historical period, because the Chinese primarily labored in lower paying industries and
firms... such as domestic and laundry work. (Almaguer 171) The Chinese immigrants were subject to
lower paying professions because the whites saw the Chinese presence

Incident Command Systems Essay
As fall began in 1970, California had experienced practically no rainfall for many months, humidity
levels dropped to being practically non existent, and the earth was scored from the raging summer heat
(Rowley, n.d.). These conditions provided ample fuel for a wildfire that would burn for 13 days before
being beaten back and extinguished by firefighters. Initially, it appeared controlling the fire spread
would be done easily and quickly. However, multiple fires spawned rapidly into large fires that
overwhelmed the local resources. Lack of communication, communication and application of skill
became quickly evident as a major flaw in the control and command of such a large event. Prior to
1970 the Incident Command Systems did not exist, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, an Incident Command Systems provides the basis of information in which the local,
regional, or state response organization use to control the efficiency and functionality of response to
an event or disaster. ICS encompasses five major systems which are, command, operations, planning,
logistics and finance (Haddow, et. al., 2013). There are also three types of Incident Command: single,
unified and area. A Single Incident Command involves one area, with one event, and one Incident
Commander. Unified Command involves an event that spans jurisdictional boundaries and, therefore,
warrants involvement of multiple Incident Command Systems and communication and coordination
between respective Incident Commanders. Area Command spans, or has potential to, a very large area,
such as a public health emergency as suggested by Haddow, Bullock and Coppola (n.d.). Since its
development, the ICS has proven to be a useful and valuable tool in emergency management. By
following guidelines established within an ICS, individual and/or multiple agencies can more quickly,
efficiently and appropriately respond to disaster and emergency events. The continued use of the
Incident Command Systems will aid in the success, competence and effectiveness of the emergency
management

Leonardo Da Vinci Biography Essay
When people think of the Renaissance, one of the first to come to mind is Leonardo da Vinci. Born in
1452, da Vinci was the child of Ser Piero, a legal notary, and Caterina, a peasant. There is little
information of da Vinci s childhood. Until the age of five, he lived with his mother in the village of
Anchiano. He would then go to live with his father in the town of Vinci. Leonardo never had any
formal education, however, he was taught reading, Latin, and mathematics at home. As a young adult,
da Vinci was fascinated by the outside world. He had a particular fascination by water and how it
moved, as well as birds of prey, particularly how they flew. At the age of fifteen, da Vinci would begin
apprenticing under the artist Verrochio in Florence, Italy. This is where he would start his painting
career. In time, Verrochio would ask Leonardo in assisting him in painting The Baptism of Christ. Da
Vinci painted the two angels in the corner so well that it proved his skill to be far superior to
Verrochio. Da Vinci s skill was so great that Verrochio vowed never to paint again. Five years later, at
the age of twenty, da Vinci was given the rank of master in the Guild of Saint Luke, a group of
renowned artists and doctors.

Leonardo created plans for a canal that would connect Florence, Italy to the sea. Da Vinci would also
begin to delve into the anatomy of the human body and other scientific studies. It was not until he
returned to Milan that his scientific studies would truly become remarkable. Over time, he developed
an overall understanding of all the organs in the human body, and how they

Check A Car Essay
When purchasing a used car, you should check several things, including how the vehicle runs. If you
do not know enough about engines, you can ask to test drive the vehicle to your mechanic or bring a
knowledgeable person with you.
Locate a vehicle and call or email the seller. Ask basic questions such as the condition of the vehicle,
about service records and if it has certain options you are interested in. If you are still interested in
purchasing the vehicle, make arrangements to test drive the vehicle. If you are purchasing from an
individual, you will have to find out when that person is available, but if you are purchasing from a
dealership, you can show up any time during the used car dealership s business hours.
Check the outside of the vehicle. Look for dents and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the vehicle shows low mileage, especially for its age, look at the wear on the brake pedals and under
the floor mats. A vehicle with 60,000 miles on it most likely won t have a severely worn brake pedal.
If you see a severely worn brake pedal on a car with purported low mileage, be very suspicious.
Likewise with worn carpet under the floor mats. The seller or another person could have tampered
with the odometer.
Start the vehicle and listen to the engine. Listen for knocking and squeaking noises. If you do not hear
anything out of the ordinary, test drive the vehicle. Make sure the seller has enough gas in the vehicle
to drive it for at least a mile, preferably two. Some noises and problems do not appear until the vehicle
warms up.
If you are still happy with the condition of the vehicle, take a closer look at the engine. Look at the
belts to ensure there isn t excessive wear. Check the oil. The oil should be clean medium brown to
dark brown. If it is black, even if the seller insists he just changed it, it shows that oil changes have not
been done regularly. If the oil has a milky look to it, run and run fast, unless you know how to fix a

Louisiana Wetlands Research Paper
A wetland is an area of land that retains it water on it surface as in swamps, marshes, and bogs.
Although we would prefer to keep the wetlands they are being destroyed very rapidly. Louisiana loses
about 25 35 square miles of wetlands each year. By 2050 it s estimated that the annual loss of fishing
income due to coastal wetland erosion will be around $550 million dollars of revenue. The wetlands
are valuable in many ways. They provide fish for commercial fishing and eating. The wetlands also
act as a sponge for floodwater during storms and heavy rains. Also retaining its water during dry spells

  • 2. Internal Conflict In Sue Kidd s The Secret Life Of Bees In the novel The Secret Life of Bees (2001), Sue Kidd creates a character, Terrence Ray Owens, that serves as the epitome of internal conflict. Kidd is able to show Terrence s internal conflict through through a flashback from Lily s friend August, and a series of violent actions inflicted on his daughter Lily. Kidd s purpose in this novel is to display the ramifications of a broken home dynamic, in order to show how forgiveness to oneself and others is truly the first step to finding happiness. It doesn t take us the readers long to find out that T. Ray is an abusive parent, but it does take us a little longer to discover why he is the way he his. Going in chronological order of the discoveries within the book, T. Ray s main three sources of internal conflict which produces external conflict with his daughter is the result of his background of war, his wife running away and eventually dying, and his daughter running away as well. Working backwards, August s introduction into the book and the knowledge she has on Lily s family divulges quite a lot about T. Ray than Lily is aware of. As we the readers find out, T. Ray served as a combatant during the Vietnam War and returned to Tiburon in 1964, the year the book is set in. Drawing on contemporary knowledge, the Vietnam War was a highly controversial and overall bloody war that caused massive civil unrest. These facts mixed with whatever traumatic experiences that T. Ray endured during the war serves as the first source of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Tropical Rainforest In Brazil Long, long ago, in a lively and vibrant tropical rainforest in Brazil, there lived three birds. First, there was Kiwi the parrot. He was the most beautiful bird in all of Brazil. His colorful feathers and bright plumage never failed to turn heads. Next, there was Victor the peacock. His gorgeous royal blue color and alluring tail feathers attracted all of the females. Last, and probably least, there was Toko the toucan. He had dull, dark feathers, and a short, ugly beak. Because of this, poor Toko had no friends and endured a lot of teasing. One day, when the forest habitat was buzzing with activity, Toko decided to go get some food. On his way, he saw Kiwi and Victor. He tried to say hi, but they drowned him out with jeers. Oh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Boring old Kiwi and his annoying sidekick Victor. Why would Dalia want to see him? Toko flew to the cave of the gods to find Dalia waiting. She did not look happy. In fact, she looked quite the opposite. She glared at him. She launched into her argument as soon as he came in. You went against my ONE CONDITION! You brag so much! You have only gotten worse after I helped you. Even though the NIBRS had more details, and came as a way to solve the problems that the UCR had, the NIBRS still has its fair share of problems leading us to be cautious about this method. One of the first problems that this system has to do with the procedures that captures it, and this leads to why we must be cautious about this methods. The procedure involves the crime to be initially reported to the police. This beginning procedure already has a problem, and according to James, the problem is, the NIBRS collect data on the number of offenses known to law enforcement each year. However, not all crimes that occur are known to the police (2). The procedure that is used in NIBRS to get the number of crimes begins initially with the crime being reported to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example law enforcement may interpret and process a crime like a burglary as a crime of trespassing, so this leads inaccuracy. James gives a good example of this, For example, if a local law enforcement agency does not closely follow UCR or NIBRS definitions, the agency might classify an assault against a woman as an attempted rape, or a trespass as a burglary (22). Many times local enforcement agencies do not follow the definitions of the NIBRS in the interpretation of crime, and this leads to crime rates in different categories to be skewed. Another problem with the NIBRS is the organization (FBI) that interprets crimes does not include many types of crimes, and these crimes are many times white collar crimes. According to James, the NIBRS most likely undercounts corporate and occupational crimes (22). The next time of crime measurement has many problems as well, and this the National Victimization ... • 10. Analysis Of Girl By Jamaica Kincaid Society has created in their minds the way a woman is supposed to act and the things they are allowed to do. In Jamaica Kincaid s Girl , we see a young woman being forced to live by the likeness of the society in which she dwells. Although this is not the life she wants to live, she has no other choice than to become the woman she was made to be. Throughout time the relationship between mothers and daughters have changed. Many mothers hold on to the old fashioned opinion of what a woman should be and many older women feel that a women s true role in life is to be domesticated. This idea of a woman s place in the home is being reinforced throughout Kincaid s short story. The mother in the story is telling her young daughter the ways things should be done. Wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap; wash the colored clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry. She further goes on to describe other household chores and how they should be correctly done. This is how you sweep a corner. She tells her daughter how to set a table for different meals, how to cook things, and even how to pick out bread. Unfortunately, though, the story doesn t tell a woman how to have a successful career, to go to college, or how to work outside of the home. In those days women were expected to stay at home while their husband s go out to work and make all the money. Even if they tried, they were not allowed to go outside the way society made them to be and this mother is trying to raise her young daughter the same way she was raised which is to be a house wife. Even though the girl says nothing in the story, she is building resentment towards her mother because she feels that she should be allowed to make her own decision on whether to be domesticated. Throughout the story never did the mother once stop to get her daughter s input on the issues, she just simply tells her daughter that she has no other choice but to be domesticated and there is no way of changing it. Noah was a man who was able to point the blame to someone else and leave without incriminating himself; this shows that he can come up with clever ideas to help himself. He shows his geniusness in creating ways to stay safe after Lucy s disappearance. Once she went missing, the authorities immediately tried to blame Noah. They were determined to prove Noah guilty ...but when the dust cleared, Ridge was still standing and the police were left holding air (pg 15). • 13. The One-And-Done Rule The first reason why the one and done rule should be eliminated is because players who leave after one year of college do not have a secure future without a college degree. A college degree is a very important part of having a successful career, and although an NBA player already has a job, the average NBA career only lasts only 4.8 years ( Athlete ). Due to the fact that an NBA career is usually short, it is important to finish college and have a degree in case a player s career is unexpectedly ended because of injury. An example of a player who left college after one year was Greg Oden. Oden attended Ohio State University for one year before declaring for the 2007 NBA draft. Oden was selected with the first overall pick, but his career has not turned out like many expected it to due to injury. His career is now at the lowest point it has ever been, and he is now at risk of his career being over without having earned a degree (Wallace). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the main concerns with a young player is their ability to handle money. Players who come out of college are given huge paychecks as soon as they are drafted, and this is a big change from college where players are not paid an annual salary. It is very important that young NBA players are responsible with their money so it will last after their career is over. During his rookie season, former one and done player Julius Randle bought a $78,000 Porshe Panamera, which came out of Randle s rookie salary (Hansford). This purchase showed that Randle might not be mature enough to handle his salary, and that he needs better spending habits if he wants to be financially secure. • 19. The Importance Of War In The Film Paths Of Glory When reoriented by the trauma and darkness of war, wisdom shapes an altered perception of the value of human life, embodying the light of gratitude. The film Paths of Glory, directed by Stanley Kubrick, dealt with the harsh conditions in the trenches during WW1, and is an exploration of dehumanisation. The film discreetly questions the authority of superior officers, and the way in which the hierarchy of the army is depicted. The film was made during the Cold War era, which was the geopolitical rivalry between US and the Soviet Union. Situated in WW2, Catch 22 is a satirical novel composed by Joseph Heller, which defines the infuriating, inverted thought processes by which the military runs its soldiers lives; Any time a soldier discerns a possible route out of the war, there is a catch, and it is always Catch 22. Anti war texts construct emotionally challenging and persuasive accounts of condemnation of darkness and injustice in war. In the film Paths of Glory, Stanley Kubrick creates a visual condemnation of warfare through his portrayal of injustice. Colonel Dax is the epitome of human goodness, a characteristic which ironically causes conflict within the context of the military as demonstrated in the Testimony scene, where Dax makes a powerful statement about the cruelty of the court case. Dax s sadistic plea condemns the officials of their unjust verdict, however they prevail with an indifferent reading of the evidence. For Mireau it is the decision to order the ... Without the southwest, we would undoubtedly lack the spirit, hope, beauty, and truth that this vast region brings to the rest of the United States as a whole. The southwest represents many things, such as journeying, racism, violence, the clashing and cooperation of cultures, and spirituality, as well as primitivism and pastoralism. All of these elements that the Southwest is comprised of is perhaps the reason why the rest of the country feels so captivated by it; why the southwest is considered a place to find yourself or to regenerate ; and why literature and film regarding the Southwest has been and continues to be of the most popular genres. The western film was one of the most popular during the first half of the twentieth century. Audiences far and wide were mesmerized by actors such as John Wayne and Roy Rogers, and their roles as heroes who fought to tame the American frontier. This very concept, taming the frontier , gives way to a larger theme that was prevalent in many western films and literature of the southwest: ubi sunt, or rather where are those who came before us? . Director Sam Peckinpah s The Ballad of Cable Hogue portrays this idea better than any other western film; the concept of ubi sunt is undeniably the film s overarching theme, clearly seen through its components.
