Intergenerational effects of Residential schools
Intergenerational Effects of Residential Schools Who are the people that went to residential schools,
where are they, and their families today? Have you ever heard someone talk about residential schools
like it was an everyday conversation? Residential schools have become so camouflaged into the back
of people s minds. People tend to forget that these schools took place and that they are real life events
that can have an effect on everyone around them. These schools have left such an imprint on Canada
as a whole, that people should be more aware about the outcomes and more familiar with the history
of these schools. The intergenerational effects of residential schools in today s society has taken such a
toll on Canada and especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a child is being a victim of any sort of abuse, they will not know any different. They have always
been told to listen and to respect their adults and elders. Children will always strive for that love and
protection feeling that can be provided from an adult. When an adult was sexually abusing a child, the
child often did not try put a stop to it. By not resisting these adults whom were doing these things to
them, they thought this is the way to get the love and attention feeling that they were searching for.
While interviewing Joni Desnomie, by the way she would talk about the events that occurred I chose
not to go through with the interview process. Joni Desnomie is my auntie, growing up with her she
talked about going to residential schools and how it was the worse experience of her life. Joni had
never had the chance to deal with the events that occurred. She has supressed her emotions towards
the school so deep, that when we were talking she started to choke up about the subject. This is a
prime example of how much of an impact these schools have on some people and their families. Joni,
did not deal with the emotions and while attending the school she had tried to commit suicide
numerous times. The scars on her wrists embodies the pain she endured

The Lincoln Lawyer By Michael Connelly
1. Full Title, author s name, copyright date, and number of pages. 2. The Lincoln Lawyer is a 404 page
crime fiction novel written by Michael Connelly, 2005. Criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller is
presented with his latest client, Beverly Hills playboy, Louis Roulet. Roulet is accused of rape and
murder but this does not trouble Haller; on the contrary, he revels in it because it means he is being
offered a franchise case, or a case offering a huge payout. Naturally, Haller takes the offer but what is
unique about this case is that for the first time ever, Haller thinks he may have an innocent client. This
is very worrying as Haller s father once said There is no client as scary as an innocent man. As the
case continues, however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Haller meets Roulet for the first time in jail, the author lightly introduces the issue of jailhouse
snitches. Although it is only a brief moment that Haller urges Roulet to stay quiet, it is an important
moment that highlights an extremely common problem in today s jail system, which is that of
eavesdroppers and the way they can further endanger their fellow criminals. Furthermore, Connelly
excels at comparing the legal system to Haller s own philosophies. Much of the book revolves around
the concept that the law is a machine, and that there are many gray areas. Haller uses all of the
technicalities of the law in order to provide for the best defense of the client, and it is these
technicalities or gray areas that is what makes the whole novel so believable. An example of this is
when his investigator, Raul Levin, gives Haller a video of Roulet meeting the victim at the bar. Haller
knows that he will have to turn it over to the prosecution in accordance with the rule of discovery, but
at the same time, he uses it to his advantage because he didn t technically have to turn over anything
until I was sure I planned to use it in trial (105). In today s legal system, there are countless instances
of cases winning on technicalities or on very unspecific laws, so much that is clear to see how Haller s
methods are constantly replicated in the real world. 5. Haller is initially a very unlikeable character

Importance Of The County Commissioners For Our County
The county commissioners do a lot for our county! They make our county have nice EMS places and
good police and county sheriffs. They are a good part of our county. I think they help us with
everything we do in our everyday lives. Without them we would have no shopping stores or anything,
we would have to go out of county just to get groceries. That would give that county more money and
less money for us in ours. Without them we wouldn t even have a county what so ever. The let us
make our own decisions of what we should have every once in a while like who to run our state or

J Alfred Prufrock Loneliness
The Pitiful Prufrock of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock
T.S. Elliot s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, is a melancholy poem
of one man s frustrated search to find the meaning of his existence. The
speaker s strong use of imagery contributes to the poems theme of communion and
loneliness.
The Poem begins with an invitation from Prufrock to follow him
through his self examination. The imagery of this invitation begins with a
startling simile, Let us go then you and I/ When the evening is spread out
against the sky/ Like a patient etherised upon a table. This simile literally
describes the evening sky, but functions on another level. Prufrock s

surrounding the event. This line also is about time. The couplet suggests that
Prufrock has been around to see these women come and go, implying Prufrock has
been situated in the high societal environment for some time. The line also
implies that while others have come and gone from the social circles Prufrock is

On the way, Prufrock deliberates
on whether he can find value in the cold superficial environment, and ask the

Fall Of American Cinema
Cinema is an innovative form of art that America focused on to help propel themselves pass European
powers. In the nineteen twenties through the nineteen sixties America controlled the Cinema world,
surpassing European industries that were struggling economically and in other ways post war. Mass
Culture and Sovereignty: The American Challenge to European Cinemas, 1920 1960* , by Victoria de
Grazia, displays European and American history of cinema, and specifically the reason behind
Americas rise to the top. de Grazia explains one of the main reasonings behind the fall of cinema in
Europe was due to the effects the war had on European countries. While European countries took a hit
finically because of the war, America was stable economically.

Obamacare Will Impose New Health Coverage
Obamacare will impose new health coverage costs, the employer mandate, compliance regulations,
and new taxes on all businesses. Altogether, these constraints will dramatically affect companies per
employee costs, desire to provide health coverage, and motivation to grow in terms of both income
and employment. Further Burdening Businesses. Obamacare is likely to exacerbate many of the
concerns and costs that are already burdening businesses particularly small business owners in at least
four ways. 1. Higher Health Care Costs. Obamacare does nothing to reduce the continually increasing
costs facing businesses that provide health insurance coverage. In fact, Obamacare s wide variety of
benefit and coverage mandates combined with new taxes, fees, and penalties will increase the cost of
providing coverage. The increased costs of health insurance might lead employers with fewer than 50
employees to drop coverage if they currently offer it, as there is nothing in Obamacare that would
prevent them from doing so. Employers that do offer coverage might respond by changing their health
plans to accommodate the cost increases. For example, UPS has restructured its coverage to exclude
the working spouses of its employees. The company expects this to affect 15,000 employees for an
annual savings of $60 million. UPS very clearly cites additional costs imposed by Obamacare as a
contributing factor in its decision, listing several Obamacare provisions that increased their costs.1 2.

Rodrigo’s Reconcile Essay
Rodrigo s Reconcile
Reconciliation means to bring back together. In Reconciliation the way we are brought back together
with the community is by asking forgiveness. Forgiveness means to pardon or spare. In Greek it
means to send forth, put away, and yield up. The other meaning is to give up the desire to punish or to
cancel a debt. Jesus gave us the sacrament of Reconciliation. We were granted this sacrament so
whenever we turn away from God we have the choice of asking forgiveness so we can be reunited
with Him. The four steps in the sacrament of Reconciliation are confession, contrition, penance, and
absolution. The first step is confession which allows people to reunite with God by admitting their
sins. Before you can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only thing was that Rodrigo issued his own penance which was harder than was needed. He fasted
for a long period of time. After he fasted he dragged around his armor and sword symbolizing his
faults in his former job. He climbed the waterfall with his luggage and also climbed a mountain. He
realized that he had done many wrongs in his life by being a slave trader and a mercenary. He knew
that he couldn t have an easy penance. He became upset when Father Gabriel cut off his pack full of
armor because he knew that Father Gabriel was not the person he was asking forgiveness from. After
doing his penance the only step left was absolution. The weird thing about it was that he didn t let
Father Gabriel give him the absolution. He wanted a member of the Indian tribe to absolve him. This
was the same tribe who he enslaved and killed their people. One day while climbing the mountain a
young Indian boy came and cut the pack and threw it into the water. The weight was lifted off of his
back after he had been forgiven. Rodrigo did want a new chance at life. The way he was granted this
was through Reconciliation. His had led a life of violence. All he really knew was fighting and
capturing Indians for slavery. He was truly reconciled. He was brought back together with the
community of Indians. He canceled his debt with his brother and the Indians. He was pardoned and
spared by the Indians who he previously

The Sound Of Upright String Bass Performance
Upright string bass performance is an ever changing profession that has played a vital role to the
history of the jazz ensemble. The bass has evolved more through jazz in the past one hundred years
than since the instrument s conception in the 15th century. In early jazz bands, the bass had a simple
and extremely conscientious style, which limited itself to furnishing fundamental harmonic tones. One
of the greatest bass players in this style is Pops Foster, known for the extraordinary power and attack
of his playing. Later on in the mid 20th century, bassists like Jimmy Blanton and Oscar Pettiford
pushed the string bass into a new light where the instrument s unsuspected potential as a solo
instrument would be realized. The bass also underwent a radical change from entirely acoustic to
entirely electric which has changed modern music forever. Electric bassists like Stanley Clarke and
Jaco Pastorius could now play many notes at once and utilize the fusion aspect of the music and the
instrument. The role of the bass in jazz has been constantly undervalued and misunderstood. People
often view the bass as a cumbersome instrument, or as expendable. The jazz ensemble without a bass
is like a house without its foundation, unable to stand up without the structure it provides. Because the
essential element in improvised jazz is the harmonic structure of the song, it is up to the bass to guide
other instrumentalists through difficult chord changes and somehow string all of the notes

Analysis of the Novel Ishmael by Daniel Quinn Essay
Ishmael begins when the nameless narrator finds a newspaper ad that reads: Teacher seeks pupil. Must
have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person (4).
At first, he is angry, as it reminds him of the counterculture movement of the 1960s, which he
participated in only to discover that there was no easy way to save the world.
Nonetheless, he responds to the ad, and finds that the teacher is a gorilla. Behind the gorilla is a sign
that reads With man gone, will there be hope for gorilla? (9).
The gorilla, named Ishmael, can communicate telepathically. Communicating with him in this fashion,
the narrator learns Ishmael s background in which the gorilla was stolen from the wild and displayed

To hep understand how Takers pass along their story, Ishmael introduces a figure named Mother
Culture, who he insists reinforces the story through every facet of Taker society. Takers assume that
humans are the pinnacles of evolution, and that the world was made for man. This belief has led to
catastrophic results, yet the Taker story allows man to blame to gods. They believe the gods wishes
man to be in control, and so if man is fundamentally flawed, then the gods are responsible for
engendering the situation. Ishmael refuses to accept this premise, saying that the only thing wrong
with humans is that the story that they insist on enacting puts them at odds with the world.
Ishmael and the narrator also work to establish some immutable laws of life and species that have
allowed the world to survive for this long. They agree that a law of limited competition exists amongst
all species on Earth, and only man has taken exception to that law. In short, this law suggests that any
species may protect and look out for itself, but cannot wipe out another species. A natural food chain
must persist.
Ishmael next discusses the Genesis origin stories of Adam and Eve, and of Cain and Abel to explore
the meaning of the Taker story, and how it historically worked against the Leaver civilizations. He
claims that the Fall of Man story was actually developed by Leavers to explain why the Takers started

From morning until night he taught his army the art of war. He worked as hard as he could to make
sure his soldiers were ready for anything and everything that could happen on the battle field. But,
training his soldiers was not the only thing that needed to be done. Although the soldiers were making
due at the camp, conditions were far from perfection. He ordered that camp to be laid out in a way that
best fit the soldiers. His instructions were to build a log hut 14 by 16 ft for every 12 men. He also
ordered his men to build a bridge over the Schuylkill River to resupply his army more efficiently.
Washington wanted the best for his troops, and in order have that he needed help from sources outside
of Valley Forge. As early as September, 1777, Washington contacted Alexander Hamilton to ask for
supplies such as clothes and blankets, which the soldiers were in need of. He desperately wrote a letter
to congress to inform them of the harsh conditions, and asking them for any supplies that they would
give to his troops. He wrote, From my soul... I pity these miseries, which it is neither in my power to
relieve or prevent (Bruns, 63 64). Washington also sent men on large expeditions to get food for his
soldiers. These men were successful and most likely saved the army. With all of these efforts
combined, his troops supply dilemma eased and they got back on track for the war. Although the
winter was harsh, conditions gradually improved under the leadership of

Stephen Crane s The Open Boat
While taking a cruise to Jamaica for vacations, the ship you are at starts to sink. How do you think
people in the ship would react to this scenario? Stephen Crane, an American author, wrote the story
The Open Boat . The story is about a boat sinking in the middle of the ocean with four men. The
characters presented by Crane in the story are a cook, an oiler, a correspondent, and the captain.
Although the story is narrated from the view of the correspondent; Crane gives the reader some
particular characteristics of the captain. The goal of this paper is to interpret the character of the
captain by discussing his actions, feelings, and quotes presented by Crane. A captain is an individual
who takes leadership and responsibility in a vessel. People think that a captain can just be found in
large ships; however, captains are necessary in any kind of boat, ship, or yacht. Therefore, in the story
Crane gives the authority to the captain. The captain is the one in charge in the boat and the one that
gives directions to the other three men. Throughout the story we can see that the other three men
respected the captain and his decisions. If the three men wanted to something, they would first
consulted with the captain before doing it. After the sinking of the boat, the captain was really
devastated because it was his responsibility and he fail. In the beginning of the story Cranes defines
the captain very sad and with the impotence of not being able to do anything. (Crane, page

Examples Of Stereotypes In A Big Happy Family
Motif of Stereotypes Many movie writers incorporate stereotypes into their film. Stereotypes in
movies can be good mechanisms to help the audience better understand the characters. For example,
common stereotypes of cowboys include grittiness and determination, which helps to develop them
for the viewer s entertainment. However, stereotypes can also present characters in a negative light. In
Madea s Big Happy Family, Tyler Perry uses the motif of African American stereotypes, which
includes rampant drug abuse, broken families, and inappropriate, disorderly behaviors. At its roots, his
movie contains nothing more than the theme of pigeonholing African Americans. The film begins with

Argumentative Essay On Cyber Bullying
A recent review of 377 articles found that cyberbullying affects 10 20% of adolescents as either
victims or perpetrators, or both, and is associated with emotional stress, social anxiety, substance
abuse, depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts (Wiederhold, 2016). Health
professionals can help identify cyberbullies in their young patients by questioning them about
problems they might be having on the internet and meeting strangers online. Health professionals are
encouraged to be alert and to try and detect these signs as soon as possible. Their help may help
prevent a suicide, which is the third leading cause of death for American youth ages 10 24
(Wiederhold, 2016). Help from our health professionals can make a big difference in the life of
children who are being affected by peer or online victimization.
As a community, all adults play an important role in ensuring that all children are safe and free of
victimization. Communities can create strategies that can help identify and support children that are
being victimized by their peers or strangers online. It is also possible to change the behavior of the

Personal Property Legal Issue That Martin Faces Essay
I respectfully disagree with your analysis pertaining to the personal property legal issue that Martin
faces. I take issue with the way you are defining bailment and implying that Martin and Benjamin had
an agreement to valet Martins GTO. Therefore, I take issue with your bailment positioning because
that implies that the car thief and Martin had a personal agreement for him to park and return the car. (
National Para Legal, ) states
The issue of whether or not a bailment has been created is important because, once a bailment has
been established, a duty of care attaches to the bailee. Failure to live up to this duty of care can cause
the bailee to be liable for any harm that results to the property from the failure of the bailee to properly
care for the property. However, if there is no bailment (only a custodial arrangement), the custodian
has no affirmative duty to safeguard the property (2016).
However, the only agreement that Martin had implied was with the restaurant, which was made in
good faith. Furthermore, the restaurant failed Martin because of their neglect to maintain their
company s property, which intern lead to the theft.
Moreover, I understand your thought process for the most recent purchaser exercising his good faith
stance. However, I do not believe that stance would hold up in court because of the way the North
Carolina law is written. According to ( North Carolina General Assembly, )

Friedrich Nietzsche s Beyond Good And Evil

In Beyond Good and Evil, Friedrich Nietzsche analyzes in a philosophical way what makes one good

it, from one s spirit from the inside. Also, he points out the challenges and struggle one faces when

Wes Anderson s The Grand Budapest Hotel
Wes Anderson s The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), is a narrative that takes the form of many stories

the way in which the film was enhanced through the use of camera angles. Love and death, romance

Economics of an Urgent Care Center in a Market of Emergency Departments
One of the contributors to the rising cost of Healthcare can be attributed to the over use of emergency
departments (EDs) for non emergency needs. In the greater Capitol/First/Beacon Hill area there are
three major hospitals (Virginia Mason, Harborview, and Swedish) with emergency rooms and no
urgent care centers with the exception of Group Health which is restricted to Group Health insurance
members.
The question I asked myself is, Why does Group Health have urgent care for their insurance plan
members and the major hospitals in Seattle do not.
Urgent vs. Emergency Care
A study by the CDC showed that approximately 70 % of emergency department visits can be ... Show

This will reduce the demand for ED visits and the ratio of patients with insurance to offset the cost of
uncompensated care. With a decrease in demand we should see a decrease in the cost of emergency
room visits as more patients get their non emergency care at urgent care centers. The new healthcare
reform will eventually reduce the burden on hospitals and insurance companies by providing the
means for everyone to have healthcare and increase the ratio of insured patients seeking treatment.
Urgent Care Economics
Unlike an emergency department, urgent care centers do not charge facility fees. Insurance companies
and patients are only charged for services rendered. Urgent care centers provide a high level of non
emergency care at a similar cost as it would to visit a doctor s office which is about 1/10th of the cost
of an emergency room visit. This includes minor procedures such as lacerations that need sutures,
minor burns, casting of fractures, reduction of dislocated joints, and on the job injuries.
Urgent care centers are for profit and are not required to provide indigent care, but do not have the tax
benefits of a not for profit hospital.
The quality of care in an urgent care center is just a good in an emergency department for non
emergency care. The differentiating factor is follow up care. Most emergency department physicians
do not see their patients for follow up care and only 2/3 of the patients will follow

The Declaration Of Sentiments By Elizabeth Cady Stanton

AP Lit P.1
27 January 2015
Essay Contest: The Declaration of Sentiments
In the Declaration of Sentiments, author Elizabeth Cady Stanton expresses her anger of the oppression
experienced by women in the United States. After being rejected to attend the World s Anti Slavery
convention in London, Stanton was frustrated because she was being rejected for being a woman. This
motivated Stanton to share her own ideas on advocating women s rights and changing the way women
are treated in society because of the mistreatment done to her, as well as many women across the
nation waiting for their voices to be heard. Stanton parallels the Declaration of Sentiments with the
Declaration of Independence by using laws that the male population regarded as righteous and
including how it had negative effects on over half the American population. This put into question
male authority and supremacy, creating a more concrete argument by revealing what men already have
under the law, to what women should have. The sophistication of the Declaration of Sentiments to a
document that the U.S. government values highly, threatens the values of the U.S. by making women s
rights a more pressing issue. The Declaration of Sentiments targeted the U.S. government and the
population by appealing to their own opinions and beliefs in order to recognize that women were
being treated like second class citizens. Although the Declaration of Sentiments never made a
significant impact on the

¨For me it s that sense of Swing that drove the big band era. Its dance music...that makes people smile
and have a good time.¨ (Aaron Weinstein). Swing did leave a large and impactful markon the world of
music and as Weinstein said it made people have a good time and smile when they felt like they
couldn t smile anymore. Also, if Swing managed to impact an entire genre of influential Jazz music
then it must have had been an influential period in music with its musicians, enriching history, and its
eventual demise. The era of swing was an influential era of music that lasted from 1935 to 1946.

Despite this, ¨most swing historians believe 1947 to be the year that its popularity went into a tailspin¨
(New World Encyclopedia Swing) . One reason would be that the baby boom had begun and Swing
fans were starting to do adult responsibilities, in other words, get a job, get married and have kids a lot
of kids and were no longer interested in listening and dancing to Swing. Another reason would be ¨the
recording ban of 1948. The year 1947 ended with recordings still being made in the swing genre, and
also with the very first rhythm and blues records being pressed¨(New World Encyclopedia Swing).
This led to competition from R B which ultimately beat Swing as it had become the more popular
music choice. The final reason would be that after the Great Depression and the end of the war
listening to Swing brought bad memories that the listener would probably want to

As the times change, so must an educator s style of teaching. Computer technology can play a large
role in this change. There are many reasons and ways schools can introduce this technology into their

between teacher and students is changing because technology gives learners control over their own
learning, which are the primary tenets of constructivism. The use of technology can have a great effect
of schools. It enables every student to gain control of there own learning (International). Technology

I picked the top panel on page seven of chapter 12. I picked this panel because of the shape, the
iconography, and the closure that is created. This panel is in the shape of a rectangle and makes it
seem like this moment is stretched out and paused. It is very still because of all the death that is
blocked off by the gutter, but it is still surrounding freezing it into a quiet moment of stillness. It is
also a moment to moment transition panel, so the sense of time being stretched is further emphasized
by this. If you look at Laurie s distressed face, you will notice that her tear is the shape of the blood

Cannabis (or marijuana) is a common drug that is derived from a plant that has been around for

believe it is important to begin studying the effects that cannabis has on people. While this drug has
been deemed to having both beneficial and detrimental side effects, many individuals are still weary as
to what this drug may bring forth in terms of future medical discoveries, as well as other issues that
may come along with it. Therefore, findings and new developments of medications for various types

Why Is Standard Oil Unethical
A monopoly is the exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service.
Durning its time, Standard Oil gained almost complete control of oil refining and marketing in the
United States through a process called horizontal integration. Horizontal integration is a strategy
where a company creates or acquires production units for outputs which are alike. In the kerosene
industry, Standard Oil used it s own vertical system. It supplied kerosene to local markets by tank cars
and tank wagons then delivered to retail customers (McGuire and Wheeler). The end result was that
the quality and availability of kerosene products were improved and the cost to the public was

Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture And Architecture
I believe in God, only I spell it nature. On June 8, 1867, Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Richland
Centre, Wisconsin. His father, William Carey Wright, was a preacher and his mother, Anna Lloyd
Jones, was a teacher. Wright grew up in Madison, Wisconsin for the majority of his childhood. He
would work on his uncle s farm during the summers; where he developed his deep appreciation for
nature. Wright would preach the importance of organic architecture and building within nature. No
house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house
should live together each happier for the other. To some individuals he was a social rebel; Wright had
many controversial political views were shunned by the public and he was famous for his unrelenting

appealing designs, the most notable designs were his Prairie style designs and his Usonian designs.
Frank Lloyd Wright, was one of the most famous American architects in the world and the greatest
architect of the twentieth century. Wright s continuous contribution towards the history of architecture

his architectural style over a career that lasted nearly seventy years.

Chaos has been studied for centuries. It has grown into its own branch of mathematics and sciences
since the 1960 s. It has been shown that chaos is around us in our everyday lives and has also
branched out into other mathematics and sciences which has lead to more research, new theories and
studies.
The first thing that should be mentioned for chaos in our everyday life should be the weather and
weather predictions since the chaos theory was based on the studies of meteorologist Edward Lorenz.
Weather prediction is only possible short term. A slight disturbance in the atmosphere can completely

be described as chaotic as the beats are usually different and depend on conditions such as exercise,

This is one way how doctors can determine if a heart has disease. The chaos is not there rather in a
diseased heart, the beats are constant and predictable with no slight variations, or are on the opposite

The story of a flood is popular within many creation myths, the most famous of today told within
Genesis. Ovid declares that Zeus was mad at humanity and commanded Poseidon to flood the earth
(1.262 313). For unknown reasons, Deucalion and Pyrrha have a boat and survive the flood. They
begin to worship the gods, when Themis whispers to them to throw the bones if their mother. They
take this to mean to throw rocks, as Gaia is Mother Earth. They obey, and these rocks turn into
humans and they begin to repopulate the earth (1.314 449). In Apollodorus account of the flood,
Prometheus, the father of Deucalion, warns his son of the flood and tells him to build an ark. After the
water subsides, Deucalion and Pyrrha worship Zeus and he sends Hermes to instruct the couple on
repopulating the earth. Once again, Deucalion and Pyrrha throw rocks, with this time, Deucalion s
rocks turning into men and Pyrrha s turning into women (Apollod. Bibl. 1.46 48). Despite two people

AIDS is a prominent issue in our world today, and because of its prevalence, many institutions try to

a syndrome caused by the HIV virus. It weakens a person s immune system which makes the body
incapable of defending itself against various diseases and infections. When left untreated AIDS could

One argument people make in favor of the installation of condom dispensers is that some people may

The Pan Africanism For Beginners
The Pan African movement as described in Lemelle s Pan Africanism for Beginners is a set of ideas
and ideologies containing social and cultural, political and economic, material and spiritual aspects.
Each aspect is accompanied by a plethora of historical figures and terms unique to the movement, well
described throughout the text and in the presented glossary. This book makes it easy to understand all
the information accompanying each topic. While it does have its strengths and weaknesses, this book
as a whole creates and explains a diverse scope of information. It describes the beginnings of Pan
Africanism and shows how the beliefs of many influential people have stemmed from notions and
dreams of years passed.
As a learning experience, Lemelle s Pan Africanism for Beginners provides a strong broad base of
knowledge. Instead of concentrating on the specifics of Pan Africanism, this book covers a broad
range of aspects, from the Diaspora to Garveyism to the Harlem Renaissance. Because there are so
many people and movements associated with Pan Africanism, it is nearly impossible to go into detail
about every important event in one book. Even so, Lemelle does a good job at providing enough detail
on each topic, while still conveying how complex Pan Africanism is. By including many facets of Pan

The Powerful Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay
The Powerful Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
When Samuel Langhorne Clemens first published his story, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, he was
criticized severely. On top of that, the book was banned from libraries and schools alike. The book
was thought to be a bad influence on children because it represents the breaking of the law as moral, it
recommends disobedience and defiance on the part of young people, it portrays churchgoers as
hypocritical, and the most admirable characters in the book habitually lie and steal and loaf (Johnson
XII). In this day and time, though, the book has become required reading for many schools, and is
found in almost every library in the country. Why has there been a change in attitude ... Show more

The cruel thing about it is that slaves were people and they were sold like cattle. This peculiar notion
that one person can actually own another body and soul is supported not only by the law and
government, but by the church and religion as well (Johnson 110). I do not believe it is a coincidence
that Jim belongs to and is being sold down the river by the person in the novel who makes the greatest
show of her religion, Miss Watson (Poirier 91). A reflection of the religious notions of the
slaveholding society, which believes the Bible approves of slavery, is shown when Huck thinks he
hears the voice of God the plain hand of Providence telling him he should return Miss Watson s
property after they run away (Twain 208).
In Chapter 12 of Huckleberry Finn, Huck and Jim come across a rapidly sinking ship occupied only
by three dangerous thieves who are secretly plotting each other s demise (Crowley 76). The ship, the
Walter Scott, which eventually disappears beneath the waves, symbolizes the Old South in its dying
years as being dominated by thugs, thieves, and killers. The noble men involved with a noble cause
had died out and were no longer present (Johnson 177 178). This is the reason that one cannot find a
noble Southern gentleman in the story. Twain s satiric scorn of this failing society is directed
particularly at what was called the code of honor, a pattern of conduct that incorporated both the love

Abstract
Surface roughness has become the most significant functional requirement and it is an index of the
product quality. In order to increase the efficiency of hard to machine alloys like titanium and nickel
alloys, an Electro Chemical Honing (ECH) process has been employed to achieve highest material
removal rate with the best surface qualities. This extended abstract describes the design and
fabrication of an indigenously developed tooling setup for ECH of external cylindrical surfaces of
Titanium alloys (TI 6AL 4V) and also highlights the key process parameters and their affect on ECH
process. The influence of the machining parameters on the surface finish has been investigated and
optimized the process parameters for improving the surface roughness is also evaluated. Percentage
improvements in surface roughness values Ra and other parameters like electrolyte temperature,
composition and concentration were studied while changing the processing time (PT). And also the
study of surface characteristics of micro and macro level and micro hardness too examined.

Essay about Roanoke Colony
The Lost Colony
Jamestown is thought by most of to be the first colony in the New World but this is not the complete
truth. Jamestown is considered our first successful colony; however it was not the first attempt at a
colony. There were a few attempts to colonize the New World before Jamestown and one in particular
that was the most mysterious is the Roanoke colony, also known as the Lost Colony. The colony got
this name because the colonists that were there vanished mysteriously with no trace of what happened.
Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his half brother Sir Walter Raleigh were both veterans of earlier colony
efforts. In 1578 Gilbert managed to acquire a patent from Queen Elizabeth that would let him have
exclusive rights for six years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reluctant to give up, he turned to private investors to finance another expedition. In 1585 his cousin,
Sir Richard Grenville, was picked up to be the leader of a group to establish a colony on Roanoke.
With him were 100 soldiers, craftsmen, and scholars to try and settle the colony. Under direction of
Ralph Lane, the colony was doomed from the beginning.
The settlers had arrived late in the season which made it almost impossible to plant crops and supplies
were depleting and to make things worse, Lane, a captain alienated the surrounding tribes and killed
their chief over a stolen cup. After Ralph Lane and his men had had enough, they left the settlement
and their fort not knowing that only a week later a supply ship from England had arrived. Finding the
island deserted, the leader left fifteen men behind to hold the fort and went back to England for
reinforcements.
In England, on January 7, 1587, a document allowing a government body to be created was signed and
passed. This body was named the Governor and Assistants of the City of Roanoke in Virginia. Jon
White, a skilled illustrator and map maker, was appointed Governor. On May 5, 1587 Raleigh decided
to try again and boarded 117 men, seventeen women, and nine children for a more permanent
settlement and sent them to the New World.
The original plan was to settle at Chesapeake Bay, but on July 22, 1587 the captain, Simao Fernandes,

Unactuality In Truman Capote s In Cold Blood
It is a fact that Truman Capote published his bestselling novel, In Cold Blood, in January 1966. It is a
fact that Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith confessed to, and were hanged for the
murder of the Clutter family. However, it may not be true that Capote s new form of novel, the
nonfiction novel, is entirely factual as he claims in numerous interviews. Instead Capote uses a
creative interpretation of events to manipulate the characters and to advance the narrative of In Cold
Blood. Despite Capote s desire to write a book that was completely factual, the addition of
information intended to influence the audience, the characterization of Perry, and fabrication of certain
events all lead to a book that is less than factual. The novel, In Cold Blood, is Truman Capote s first
attempt to deviate from the traditional mold of the novel, towards a fact based work of literature, that
he called a nonfiction novel. Capote describes his intent with In Cold Blood to The Saturday Review
when he says that I got the idea of doing a really serious big work it would be precisely like a novel,
with a single difference: every word of it would be true from beginning to end (Voss). In this interview
with The Saturday Review, Capote expresses that In Cold Blood would be written as a record of fact,
juxtaposing the traditional novel that is based on the creation of events and of characters. However, a
novel that is free of the creation of events and certain character traits seems

European Union Integration And Deliberative Democracy
2.0 European Union integration and deliberative democracy The European Union (EU) was
established back in (REFERENCE) with the aim of (REFERENCE peace and economic prosperity).
Since then, much has happened, and the EU is now considered more than just an economic
collaboration. This brings along both new challenges and new opportunities when considering the
future EU. Recent developments has shown an increasingly worry about the economic situation in the
EU (REFERENCE GREECE AND SPAIN), which challenges the legitimacy of the EU as solely an
economic union if the internal economy is falling apart, how can we then justify the upholding of the
union? This has become a major concern to several EU countries. One example is the United
Kingdom, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The political relationship between nation states is built upon negotiations between national
governments. In this sense, the theory draws upon an ration actor model , where the nation state is the
primary analytical unit of interest, and intergovernmental negotiations are the context (Cini, 2007, p.
97). More precisely, Moravcsik writes that Actors calculate the alternative courses of action and
choose the one that maximizes (or satisfies) their utility under the circumstances. (Moravcik and
Schimmelfennig, 2009, p. 68). He argues that nation states in the EU seek to maximise economic
profit based on existing preferences. This form of rationality indirectly implies that a collaboration
between EU countries is undesirable when there is no economic profit to be made by the nation state.
This also means that the theory is unable to accommodate alternative forms of political integration. If
one believes in the idea that EU integration is (or should be) built upon economic profitable results
alone, then it should be no surprise that the EU is currently witnessing the appearance of an increasing
number of euroscepticist parties within several EU countries. The other main theory about EU
integration, namely the neofunctionalist (NF) tradition, opposes the idea of LI in several ways. One of
the main differences is the NF notion of positive spillover effects, e.g. that integration within the
economic sector provides strong incentives for integration within other sectors.

Historical Context Of Mice And Men
Historical Context: Of Mice and Men was written and took place in the heat of the Great Depression.
Five years before Steinbeck composed his novella, unemployment ... had reached 24.% (Taylor 2).
This explains the economic state of George and the rest of the farm hands, poverty stricken and
jumping from job to job. Major Characters George: George is a small and quick man from Soledad,
California, a modest town south of San Jose and west of Fresno. He jumps from ranch to ranch,
working odd jobs in hopes of one day owning a few acres of his own. He has taken care of Lennie
since he was fairly young; there aren t many guys who travel around together. He cares for Lennie

His extreme simplicity, in both mind and character, are the focal point of the novella. He was raised by
his Aunt Clara, and once she died, George took care of him. They move from ranch to ranch as Lennie
gets them kicked out. He never means to cause trouble with his immense strength; Lennie likes to pet
soft things and wants to take care of rabbits on a farm he owns with George. Quote 1 Quote: He s nuts,
Slim. He never done this to be mean (Steinbeck 97). Explanation: Lennie loves George, and lives to
please him. He just can t help it when he does something wrong. He accidently killed his own puppy
when playing with it. He kills mice all the time by petting them too hard. The final straw was when he
broke Curley s wife s neck. He had been stroking her hair overly firmly when she began to scream. He
didn t want to get into trouble with George, so he covered her mouth and nose. She started struggling;
he jerked her still, snapping her neck. Lennie is loving and kind, he just doesn t know his own
strength. Quote 2 Quote: He s gonna beat the hell outa you with a stick, that s what he s gonna do.
Now Lennie retorted belligerently, He ain t neither. George won t do nothing like that. I ve known

Essay on Eugenics
The roots of eugenics can be traced back to Britain in the early 1880 s when Sir Francis Galton
generated the term from the Greek word for well born . He defined eugenics as the science of
improving stock, whether human or animal. According to the American Eugenics Movement, today s
study of eugenics has many similarities to studies done in the early 20th century. Back then, Eugenics
was, quite literally, an effort to breed better human beings by encouraging the reproduction of people
with quot;good quot; genes and discouraging those with quot;bad quot; genes.
(www.eugenicsarchive.org) According to Merriam Webster, the modern day definition of eugenics is,
a science that deals with the improvement (as by control of human mating) of ... Show more content

At the same time, cloning could operate as a form of positive eugenics, increasing the number of
births of babies with excellent health and high intelligence.
One thing that many people disagree upon is whether or not eugenics and genetic cloning is ethically
right or wrong. On one hand, it could eliminate children being born with life threatening diseases by
forewarning parents of potential medical problems. It is known that hemophilia, albinism, and certain
structural abnormalities are inheritable. Family gene maps, called pedigrees, can help families with
serious diseases avoid having children with the same diseases through genetic counseling, and,
increasingly, prospective parents can be tested directly for the presence of undesired genes. (Prothero)
Another possible use of genetics could be the production of healthy organs. For example, heart disease
is one of the top causes of death in the United States. Scientists predict that they will someday be able
to clone healthy heart cells and inject them into damaged areas of the heart to cure defects. There is
also a possibility that doctors will be able to take healthy cells and tissue from a patient s body and use
them to create organs. This would eliminate the need for organ donor waiting lists. People would no
longer be facing early death because there is not a healthy heart or other organ available to them.
At the same time, some people question if it is morally right to, in terms, play god . Some go

Have you ever heard someone talk about residential schools like it was an everyday conversation? Residential schools have become so camouflaged into the back of people s minds. People tend to forget that these schools took place and that they are real life events that can have an effect on everyone around them. These schools have left such an imprint on Canada as a whole, that people should be more aware about the outcomes and more familiar with the history of these schools. The intergenerational effects of residential schools in today s society has taken such a toll on Canada and especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By not resisting these adults whom were doing these things to them, they thought this is the way to get the love and attention feeling that they were searching for. While interviewing Joni Desnomie, by the way she would talk about the events that occurred I chose not to go through with the interview process. Joni Desnomie is my auntie, growing up with her she talked about going to residential schools and how it was the worse experience of her life. Joni had never had the chance to deal with the events that occurred. She has supressed her emotions towards the school so deep, that when we were talking she started to choke up about the subject. This is a prime example of how much of an impact these schools have on some people and their families. • 4. The Lincoln Lawyer By Michael Connelly 1. Full Title, author s name, copyright date, and number of pages. 2. The Lincoln Lawyer is a 404 page crime fiction novel written by Michael Connelly, 2005. Criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller is presented with his latest client, Beverly Hills playboy, Louis Roulet. Roulet is accused of rape and murder but this does not trouble Haller; on the contrary, he revels in it because it means he is being offered a franchise case, or a case offering a huge payout. Naturally, Haller takes the offer but what is unique about this case is that for the first time ever, Haller thinks he may have an innocent client. This is very worrying as Haller s father once said There is no client as scary as an innocent man. As the case continues, however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Haller meets Roulet for the first time in jail, the author lightly introduces the issue of jailhouse snitches. Although it is only a brief moment that Haller urges Roulet to stay quiet, it is an important moment that highlights an extremely common problem in today s jail system, which is that of eavesdroppers and the way they can further endanger their fellow criminals. Furthermore, Connelly excels at comparing the legal system to Haller s own philosophies. Much of the book revolves around the concept that the law is a machine, and that there are many gray areas. Haller uses all of the technicalities of the law in order to provide for the best defense of the client, and it is these technicalities or gray areas that is what makes the whole novel so believable. An example of this is when his investigator, Raul Levin, gives Haller a video of Roulet meeting the victim at the bar. Haller knows that he will have to turn it over to the prosecution in accordance with the rule of discovery, but at the same time, he uses it to his advantage because he didn t technically have to turn over anything until I was sure I planned to use it in trial (105). In today s legal system, there are countless instances of cases winning on technicalities or on very unspecific laws, so much that is clear to see how Haller s methods are constantly replicated in the real world. 5. Haller is initially a very unlikeable character ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Obamacare Will Impose New Health Coverage Obamacare will impose new health coverage costs, the employer mandate, compliance regulations, and new taxes on all businesses. Altogether, these constraints will dramatically affect companies per employee costs, desire to provide health coverage, and motivation to grow in terms of both income and employment. Further Burdening Businesses. Obamacare is likely to exacerbate many of the concerns and costs that are already burdening businesses particularly small business owners in at least four ways. 1. Higher Health Care Costs. Obamacare does nothing to reduce the continually increasing costs facing businesses that provide health insurance coverage. In fact, Obamacare s wide variety of benefit and coverage mandates combined with new taxes, fees, and penalties will increase the cost of providing coverage. The increased costs of health insurance might lead employers with fewer than 50 employees to drop coverage if they currently offer it, as there is nothing in Obamacare that would prevent them from doing so. Employers that do offer coverage might respond by changing their health plans to accommodate the cost increases. For example, UPS has restructured its coverage to exclude the working spouses of its employees. The company expects this to affect 15,000 employees for an annual savings of $60 million. UPS very clearly cites additional costs imposed by Obamacare as a contributing factor in its decision, listing several Obamacare provisions that increased their costs.1 2. ... • 12. Rodrigo’s Reconcile Essay Rodrigo s Reconcile Reconciliation means to bring back together. In Reconciliation the way we are brought back together with the community is by asking forgiveness. Forgiveness means to pardon or spare. In Greek it means to send forth, put away, and yield up. The other meaning is to give up the desire to punish or to cancel a debt. Jesus gave us the sacrament of Reconciliation. We were granted this sacrament so whenever we turn away from God we have the choice of asking forgiveness so we can be reunited with Him. The four steps in the sacrament of Reconciliation are confession, contrition, penance, and absolution. The first step is confession which allows people to reunite with God by admitting their sins. After he fasted he dragged around his armor and sword symbolizing his faults in his former job. He climbed the waterfall with his luggage and also climbed a mountain. He realized that he had done many wrongs in his life by being a slave trader and a mercenary. He knew that he couldn t have an easy penance. He became upset when Father Gabriel cut off his pack full of armor because he knew that Father Gabriel was not the person he was asking forgiveness from. After doing his penance the only step left was absolution. The weird thing about it was that he didn t let Father Gabriel give him the absolution. He wanted a member of the Indian tribe to absolve him. This was the same tribe who he enslaved and killed their people. One day while climbing the mountain a young Indian boy came and cut the pack and threw it into the water. The weight was lifted off of his back after he had been forgiven. Rodrigo did want a new chance at life. The way he was granted this was through Reconciliation. His had led a life of violence. All he really knew was fighting and capturing Indians for slavery. • 13. The Sound Of Upright String Bass Performance Upright string bass performance is an ever changing profession that has played a vital role to the history of the jazz ensemble. The bass has evolved more through jazz in the past one hundred years than since the instrument s conception in the 15th century. In early jazz bands, the bass had a simple and extremely conscientious style, which limited itself to furnishing fundamental harmonic tones. One of the greatest bass players in this style is Pops Foster, known for the extraordinary power and attack of his playing. Later on in the mid 20th century, bassists like Jimmy Blanton and Oscar Pettiford pushed the string bass into a new light where the instrument s unsuspected potential as a solo instrument would be realized. The bass also underwent a radical change from entirely acoustic to entirely electric which has changed modern music forever. Electric bassists like Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius could now play many notes at once and utilize the fusion aspect of the music and the instrument. The role of the bass in jazz has been constantly undervalued and misunderstood. People often view the bass as a cumbersome instrument, or as expendable. The jazz ensemble without a bass is like a house without its foundation, unable to stand up without the structure it provides. Because the essential element in improvised jazz is the harmonic structure of the song, it is up to the bass to guide other instrumentalists through difficult chord changes and somehow string all of the notes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To hep understand how Takers pass along their story, Ishmael introduces a figure named Mother Culture, who he insists reinforces the story through every facet of Taker society. Takers assume that humans are the pinnacles of evolution, and that the world was made for man. This belief has led to catastrophic results, yet the Taker story allows man to blame to gods. They believe the gods wishes man to be in control, and so if man is fundamentally flawed, then the gods are responsible for engendering the situation. Ishmael refuses to accept this premise, saying that the only thing wrong with humans is that the story that they insist on enacting puts them at odds with the world. Ishmael and the narrator also work to establish some immutable laws of life and species that have allowed the world to survive for this long. They agree that a law of limited competition exists amongst all species on Earth, and only man has taken exception to that law. In short, this law suggests that any species may protect and look out for itself, but cannot wipe out another species. A natural food chain must persist. Ishmael next discusses the Genesis origin stories of Adam and Eve, and of Cain and Abel to explore the meaning of the Taker story, and how it historically worked against the Leaver civilizations. He claims that the Fall of Man story was actually developed by Leavers to explain why the Takers started ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Stephen Crane s The Open Boat While taking a cruise to Jamaica for vacations, the ship you are at starts to sink. How do you think people in the ship would react to this scenario? Stephen Crane, an American author, wrote the story The Open Boat . The story is about a boat sinking in the middle of the ocean with four men. The characters presented by Crane in the story are a cook, an oiler, a correspondent, and the captain. Although the story is narrated from the view of the correspondent; Crane gives the reader some particular characteristics of the captain. The goal of this paper is to interpret the character of the captain by discussing his actions, feelings, and quotes presented by Crane. A captain is an individual who takes leadership and responsibility in a vessel. People think that a captain can just be found in large ships; however, captains are necessary in any kind of boat, ship, or yacht. Therefore, in the story Crane gives the authority to the captain. The captain is the one in charge in the boat and the one that gives directions to the other three men. • 18. Examples Of Stereotypes In A Big Happy Family Motif of Stereotypes Many movie writers incorporate stereotypes into their film. Stereotypes in movies can be good mechanisms to help the audience better understand the characters. For example, common stereotypes of cowboys include grittiness and determination, which helps to develop them for the viewer s entertainment. However, stereotypes can also present characters in a negative light. In Madea s Big Happy Family, Tyler Perry uses the motif of African American stereotypes, which includes rampant drug abuse, broken families, and inappropriate, disorderly behaviors. At its roots, his movie contains nothing more than the theme of pigeonholing African Americans. The film begins with Shirley, the matriarch of the family, sitting in a doctor s ... Argumentative Essay On Cyber Bullying A recent review of 377 articles found that cyberbullying affects 10 20% of adolescents as either victims or perpetrators, or both, and is associated with emotional stress, social anxiety, substance abuse, depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts (Wiederhold, 2016). Health professionals can help identify cyberbullies in their young patients by questioning them about problems they might be having on the internet and meeting strangers online. Health professionals are encouraged to be alert and to try and detect these signs as soon as possible. Their help may help prevent a suicide, which is the third leading cause of death for American youth ages 10 24 (Wiederhold, 2016). • 20. Personal Property Legal Issue That Martin Faces Essay I respectfully disagree with your analysis pertaining to the personal property legal issue that Martin faces. I take issue with the way you are defining bailment and implying that Martin and Benjamin had an agreement to valet Martins GTO. Therefore, I take issue with your bailment positioning because that implies that the car thief and Martin had a personal agreement for him to park and return the car. ( National Para Legal, ) states The issue of whether or not a bailment has been created is important because, once a bailment has been established, a duty of care attaches to the bailee. Failure to live up to this duty of care can cause the bailee to be liable for any harm that results to the property from the failure of the bailee to properly care for the property. However, if there is no bailment (only a custodial arrangement), the custodian has no affirmative duty to safeguard the property (2016). However, the only agreement that Martin had implied was with the restaurant, which was made in good faith. Furthermore, the restaurant failed Martin because of their neglect to maintain their company s property, which intern lead to the theft. Moreover, I understand your thought process for the most recent purchaser exercising his good faith stance. Economics of an Urgent Care Center in a Market of Emergency Departments One of the contributors to the rising cost of Healthcare can be attributed to the over use of emergency departments (EDs) for non emergency needs. In the greater Capitol/First/Beacon Hill area there are three major hospitals (Virginia Mason, Harborview, and Swedish) with emergency rooms and no urgent care centers with the exception of Group Health which is restricted to Group Health insurance members. This will reduce the demand for ED visits and the ratio of patients with insurance to offset the cost of uncompensated care. With a decrease in demand we should see a decrease in the cost of emergency room visits as more patients get their non emergency care at urgent care centers. The new healthcare reform will eventually reduce the burden on hospitals and insurance companies by providing the means for everyone to have healthcare and increase the ratio of insured patients seeking treatment. Urgent Care Economics Unlike an emergency department, urgent care centers do not charge facility fees. Insurance companies and patients are only charged for services rendered. Urgent care centers provide a high level of non emergency care at a similar cost as it would to visit a doctor s office which is about 1/10th of the cost of an emergency room visit. This includes minor procedures such as lacerations that need sutures, minor burns, casting of fractures, reduction of dislocated joints, and on the job injuries. Urgent care centers are for profit and are not required to provide indigent care, but do not have the tax benefits of a not for profit hospital. • 27. The Declaration Of Sentiments By Elizabeth Cady Stanton Tory Lynch Marlaire AP Lit P.1 27 January 2015 Essay Contest: The Declaration of Sentiments In the Declaration of Sentiments, author Elizabeth Cady Stanton expresses her anger of the oppression experienced by women in the United States. After being rejected to attend the World s Anti Slavery convention in London, Stanton was frustrated because she was being rejected for being a woman. This motivated Stanton to share her own ideas on advocating women s rights and changing the way women are treated in society because of the mistreatment done to her, as well as many women across the nation waiting for their voices to be heard. Stanton parallels the Declaration of Sentiments with the Declaration of Independence by using laws that the male population regarded as righteous and including how it had negative effects on over half the American population. This put into question male authority and supremacy, creating a more concrete argument by revealing what men already have under the law, to what women should have. The sophistication of the Declaration of Sentiments to a document that the U.S. government values highly, threatens the values of the U.S. by making women s rights a more pressing issue. The Declaration of Sentiments targeted the U.S. government and the population by appealing to their own opinions and beliefs in order to recognize that women were being treated like second class citizens. What Is My Greatest Accomplishments From the first taste of accomplishment we go on to set new goals, and the goals we set aren t only for the accomplishments and accolades that come with them but most importantly for self contention to be the best we can be, to be great. Well my first taste of accomplishment came from an orange sphere and a hoop as a child. On my 5th birthday, my old man brought home a basketball hoop, not knowing what it was, I was intrigued at first sight. Looking back, as an avid sports lover now, I can tell you that whether it had been a basketball, soccer ball, baseball, lacrosse ball, football, a punching bag, a pool, or a track, the first taste of accomplishment comes from the first pass, shot, goal, touchdown, hit, run, or leap, and from there you ... Norristown was on a role scoring 10 unanswered points to put themselves back in the game. Our coach called a time out with one minute left. The plan was to get me the ball, for an open shot, coach drew up the play and we tried to carry it out. Our plan didn t fall through and Norristown got the defensive rebound, going down the court to score 2 points on a toughly contested mid range shot. It was our ball with 35 seconds on the clock. We tried to chew the clock and get a good shot off, and we did just that. I scored the record breaking basket with 7 seconds left. Norristown had the ball down two with very little time on the clock. We knew we just needed one stop. One stop and we d become state champions forever. Norristown inbounded the ball and drove down court, we played them tight trying not to give up a three pointer. No points we we re champions, 2pts would tie it and take us to overtime, 3points... well, 3pts would end our season, and we d come up short on being the best. • 40. Condom Dispensers In College Essay AIDS is a prominent issue in our world today, and because of its prevalence, many institutions try to take preventative measures to stifle the epidemic. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, is a syndrome caused by the HIV virus. It weakens a person s immune system which makes the body incapable of defending itself against various diseases and infections. When left untreated AIDS could lead to death (Avert.org). The Administration at Camden County College has installed condom dispensers in the college s restrooms, as an attempt to prevent the spread of AIDS on campus. While I agree that AIDS is a serious issue that must be confronted, I do not believe that the installation of condom dispensers in Camden County College s bathrooms is a necessary precaution. ... If a student is in need of condoms there are numerous places between the college and his house where he could stop to obtain them. Condoms are available at health centers, superstores, drugstores, convenience stores, and even gas stations, making them very accessible (NSW Government Health). One argument people make in favor of the installation of condom dispensers is that some people may be too embarrassed to purchase them in stores. There are numerous options available for people who shy away from purchasing condoms, for example, the self check out isle which is an option at most superstores, or online purchase. • 41. The Pan Africanism For Beginners The Pan African movement as described in Lemelle s Pan Africanism for Beginners is a set of ideas and ideologies containing social and cultural, political and economic, material and spiritual aspects. Each aspect is accompanied by a plethora of historical figures and terms unique to the movement, well described throughout the text and in the presented glossary. This book makes it easy to understand all the information accompanying each topic. While it does have its strengths and weaknesses, this book as a whole creates and explains a diverse scope of information. It describes the beginnings of Pan Africanism and shows how the beliefs of many influential people have stemmed from notions and dreams of years passed. As a learning experience, Lemelle s Pan Africanism for Beginners provides a strong broad base of knowledge. Instead of concentrating on the specifics of Pan Africanism, this book covers a broad range of aspects, from the Diaspora to Garveyism to the Harlem Renaissance. Because there are so many people and movements associated with Pan Africanism, it is nearly impossible to go into detail about every important event in one book. Even so, Lemelle does a good job at providing enough detail on each topic, while still conveying how complex Pan Africanism is. By including many facets of Pan Africanism, Lemelle is able to spark an interest in the reader so that they can continue onto more specific research. For instance, when Lemelle explained the Conference of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Powerful Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay The Powerful Adventures of Huckleberry Finn When Samuel Langhorne Clemens first published his story, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, he was criticized severely. On top of that, the book was banned from libraries and schools alike. The book was thought to be a bad influence on children because it represents the breaking of the law as moral, it recommends disobedience and defiance on the part of young people, it portrays churchgoers as hypocritical, and the most admirable characters in the book habitually lie and steal and loaf (Johnson XII). In this day and time, though, the book has become required reading for many schools, and is found in almost every library in the country. Why has there been a change in attitude ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cruel thing about it is that slaves were people and they were sold like cattle. This peculiar notion that one person can actually own another body and soul is supported not only by the law and government, but by the church and religion as well (Johnson 110). I do not believe it is a coincidence that Jim belongs to and is being sold down the river by the person in the novel who makes the greatest show of her religion, Miss Watson (Poirier 91). A reflection of the religious notions of the slaveholding society, which believes the Bible approves of slavery, is shown when Huck thinks he hears the voice of God the plain hand of Providence telling him he should return Miss Watson s property after they run away (Twain 208). In Chapter 12 of Huckleberry Finn, Huck and Jim come across a rapidly sinking ship occupied only by three dangerous thieves who are secretly plotting each other s demise (Crowley 76). The ship, the Walter Scott, which eventually disappears beneath the waves, symbolizes the Old South in its dying years as being dominated by thugs, thieves, and killers. The noble men involved with a noble cause had died out and were no longer present (Johnson 177 178). This is the reason that one cannot find a noble Southern gentleman in the story. Twain s satiric scorn of this failing society is directed particularly at what was called the code of honor, a pattern of conduct that incorporated both the love of ... Jamestown is considered our first successful colony; however it was not the first attempt at a colony. There were a few attempts to colonize the New World before Jamestown and one in particular that was the most mysterious is the Roanoke colony, also known as the Lost Colony. The colony got this name because the colonists that were there vanished mysteriously with no trace of what happened. Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his half brother Sir Walter Raleigh were both veterans of earlier colony efforts. In 1585 his cousin, Sir Richard Grenville, was picked up to be the leader of a group to establish a colony on Roanoke. With him were 100 soldiers, craftsmen, and scholars to try and settle the colony. Under direction of Ralph Lane, the colony was doomed from the beginning. The settlers had arrived late in the season which made it almost impossible to plant crops and supplies were depleting and to make things worse, Lane, a captain alienated the surrounding tribes and killed their chief over a stolen cup. After Ralph Lane and his men had had enough, they left the settlement and their fort not knowing that only a week later a supply ship from England had arrived. Finding the island deserted, the leader left fifteen men behind to hold the fort and went back to England for reinforcements. In England, on January 7, 1587, a document allowing a government body to be created was signed and passed. This body was named the Governor and Assistants of the City of Roanoke in Virginia. Jon White, a skilled illustrator and map maker, was appointed Governor. On May 5, 1587 Raleigh decided to try again and boarded 117 men, seventeen women, and nine children for a more permanent settlement and sent them to the New World. • 47. Unactuality In Truman Capote s In Cold Blood It is a fact that Truman Capote published his bestselling novel, In Cold Blood, in January 1966. It is a fact that Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith confessed to, and were hanged for the murder of the Clutter family. However, it may not be true that Capote s new form of novel, the nonfiction novel, is entirely factual as he claims in numerous interviews. Instead Capote uses a creative interpretation of events to manipulate the characters and to advance the narrative of In Cold Blood. Despite Capote s desire to write a book that was completely factual, the addition of information intended to influence the audience, the characterization of Perry, and fabrication of certain events all lead to a book that is less than factual. The novel, In Cold Blood, is Truman Capote s first attempt to deviate from the traditional mold of the novel, towards a fact based work of literature, that he called a nonfiction novel. Capote describes his intent with In Cold Blood to The Saturday Review when he says that I got the idea of doing a really serious big work it would be precisely like a novel, with a single difference: every word of it would be true from beginning to end (Voss). In this interview with The Saturday Review, Capote expresses that In Cold Blood would be written as a record of fact, juxtaposing the traditional novel that is based on the creation of events and of characters. Since then, much has happened, and the EU is now considered more than just an economic collaboration. This brings along both new challenges and new opportunities when considering the future EU. Recent developments has shown an increasingly worry about the economic situation in the EU (REFERENCE GREECE AND SPAIN), which challenges the legitimacy of the EU as solely an economic union if the internal economy is falling apart, how can we then justify the upholding of the union? The political relationship between nation states is built upon negotiations between national governments. In this sense, the theory draws upon an ration actor model , where the nation state is the primary analytical unit of interest, and intergovernmental negotiations are the context (Cini, 2007, p. 97). More precisely, Moravcsik writes that Actors calculate the alternative courses of action and choose the one that maximizes (or satisfies) their utility under the circumstances. (Moravcik and Schimmelfennig, 2009, p. 68). He argues that nation states in the EU seek to maximise economic profit based on existing preferences. This form of rationality indirectly implies that a collaboration between EU countries is undesirable when there is no economic profit to be made by the nation state. This also means that the theory is unable to accommodate alternative forms of political integration. If one believes in the idea that EU integration is (or should be) built upon economic profitable results alone, then it should be no surprise that the EU is currently witnessing the appearance of an increasing number of euroscepticist parties within several EU countries. The other main theory about EU integration, namely the neofunctionalist (NF) tradition, opposes the idea of LI in several ways. One of the main differences is the NF notion of positive spillover effects, e.g. that integration within the economic sector provides strong incentives for integration within other sectors. ... He defined eugenics as the science of improving stock, whether human or animal. According to the American Eugenics Movement, today s study of eugenics has many similarities to studies done in the early 20th century. Back then, Eugenics was, quite literally, an effort to breed better human beings by encouraging the reproduction of people with quot;good quot; genes and discouraging those with quot;bad quot; genes. One thing that many people disagree upon is whether or not eugenics and genetic cloning is ethically right or wrong. On one hand, it could eliminate children being born with life threatening diseases by forewarning parents of potential medical problems. It is known that hemophilia, albinism, and certain structural abnormalities are inheritable. Family gene maps, called pedigrees, can help families with serious diseases avoid having children with the same diseases through genetic counseling, and, increasingly, prospective parents can be tested directly for the presence of undesired genes. (Prothero) Another possible use of genetics could be the production of healthy organs. For example, heart disease is one of the top causes of death in the United States. Scientists predict that they will someday be able to clone healthy heart cells and inject them into damaged areas of the heart to cure defects. There is also a possibility that doctors will be able to take healthy cells and tissue from a patient s body and use them to create organs. This would eliminate the need for organ donor waiting lists. People would no longer be facing early death because there is not a healthy heart or other organ available to them.
