The Nature Of Equality In Anthem By Ayn Rand
The Nature of Equality In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, nature is portrayed as a safe haven, and it is
something that Equality can experience without thinking twice. Nature is an escape, a place to be you,
a place to be unique. Everything in the society is sheltered and unknown, Equality describes nature in
a different way than he described anything else in the book. There is a sense of relief, and it is like
Equality lets his guard down and is free to be himself for a short amount of time as he describes
nature. Equality describes the sky with great detail. He explains the three different colors of the sky at
three different times of the day. The sky is green and cold in our windows to the east (Rand 27). He
pays great attention to detail and the vivid colors and the way the sky looks at various times. Equality
feels a sense of relief throughout the book through nature. Individuality is Equality and Liberty met
because she worked in the fields near where Equality worked as a Street Sweeper. Liberty worked in
nature, and lived in the Home of the Peasants. Again, with strict government laws, Equality was not
supposed to have feelings for Liberty, which he does anyways. Nature plays a big part in their
relationship too, Equality describes her fields as black and ploughed, and they lie like great fan before
us, with their furrows gathered in some hand beyond the sky, spreading forth from that hand, opening
wide apart as they come toward us, like black pleats that

How The Drought Has Gotten So Bad And Discovered That...
MY QUESTION
Three summers ago, my friends and I had an idea to rent out a giant inflatable waterslide to spend the
day playing on it. We called Jennifer Bubbles, the place that rents out waterslides, and picked the
biggest one. It was this huge inflatable thing that was half a bounce house and half a waterslide. The
next summer, we rented out the same one. It wasn t until last summer, that we had a problem renting it
out. We called Jennifer bubbles again and she told us that because of the drought, she was not allowed
to rent to anyone because too much water was being used for it. My friends and I were pretty upset,
but we ended up just throwing water balloons at each other that summer. I questioned how the drought
had gotten so bad and discovered that climate change, also known as global warming, was the cause.
Each year the earth continues to get warmer and warmer, and by the end of the 21st century, average
surface temperatures can rise between 35 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. There are many theories as to
what causes climate change, but which ones are liable for a warmer earth? Pollution, green house
gases, and aerosols in the atmosphere are causes of the increase in the earths temperate, but which has
the most effect on climate change or do all three have equal effect?
I took an interest in climate change after reading a few articles about the conspiracy of chem trails. It s
basically the theory of governmental airplanes shooting chemicals into the sky to control the

Harshness Of Life In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
On February 27, 1902, in Salinas County, California, an American Novelist named John Steinbeck
was born. He had an early appreciation for the land, in particular, California s Salinas Valley, which
would be a big impact on his writing later on. Steinbeck s life is very similar to the book he would
write, Of Mice and Men, which takes place in his hometown Salinas, and also has the same theme of
Steinbeck s life. Steinbeck experienced harshness in his life, drifting out of schools for six years until
he dropped out for good. There are many themes found in the novel Of Mice and Men by John
Steinbeck, but the most significant theme is the harshness of life, which frequently appears and
develops throughout the novel.
The harshness of life theme is shown right at the start of the book with two examples. The first
example appears on page five when Lennie tries to cover up killing a mouse to George. George sees
that Lennie is holding something and when he asks what it is, Lennie says Jus a dead mouse, George. I
didn t kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead (5). This proves the harshness of life because Lennie
could not control what he wanted. And in life, in order to succeed and live a good life, you are going
to have to be able to control what you want. Another example of the harshness of life occurs when
Lennie was talking about him petting the mice and how it s not under his control to stop it. He says I d
pet em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead
(10). This is a great example of the harshness of life because it shows killing. Lennie kills the fluffy
animal, but he did not want to. Steinbeck shows with these two examples that harshness of life doesn t
have to include only human beings, it also can be animals.
The reason why George and Lennie travel together is in fact because of the harshness of life. When
George is talking to Slim about Lennie and how they are together now, he says, I turns to Lennie and
says, Jump in. An he jumps. Couldn t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him
(40). George was being a jerk to Lennie and ended up having to save his life. This is a big harshness
of life because George was a jerk to

Carlody Hobson Speech Analysis
Imagine living in a world that is seemingly against all that you are and all that you want to be.
Through modern stereotypes and accustomed oppression, the odds are working against minorities. As
a society we have become familiarized with the comfort of color blindness, this is a term used for the
ignorance that surrounds diversity issues today. Mellody Hobson, executive president of Ariel
Investments, is an African American woman that has chosen to confront the lack of understanding
involving diversity issues involving race, gender, sexuality, religion, socioeconomic status, and
education and tagging it as Color Bravery. Throughout her discussion, Hobson engages and connects
with her audience through her personal stories, facial expressions, tone of voice, and passion about
diversity. Hobson sees her audience as individuals who are struggling to understand the diversity
issues that surround race, gender, and religion. She assumes that her audience has little awareness of
the institutionalized injustices minorities face everyday. With that being said, she does not use her
discussion to ridicule or judge them for not understanding the real problems involving diversity,
instead she focuses on opening their eyes to begin to understand the obstacles our society needs to
overcome in order to start celebrating diversity. Throughout her speech, Hobson infers that her
audience needs a little help grasping the significance of her anecdotes. For example, she starts her
discussion

The Influence of Media on Society in the 21st Century Essay
The influence of media on society in the 21st century is undeniable. Of all the types of media, music
and books stand out as two of the main strands that influences people the most. They are both
invaluable resources of knowledge and entertainment that can be accessed by all age groups.
However, the most important aspect of music and books that has made them so prominent to the 21st
century audience is that it offers a wide range of genres and styles. Consequently, Music and books
have become the principal method of entertainment in the lives of many, as it bestows upon people the
opportunity to free themselves from reality, and exist in their own fantasy worlds. By comparing and

The internet is an important tool for these singers to reach out to his or her fans. Websites such as
Facebook and Twitter have been used as a way to do so. The internet has been used as a haven for
illegal activities as well, one of them is piracy. When one mentions the internet, the first matter that
comes to mind is piracy. The number of cases of online piracy has skyrocketed in the last few years.
Websites such as The Pirate Bay and Mininova have been instrumental in this uprising of universal
outcry for changes in copyright laws. Of all the types of media, books and music have been two of the
most pirated. Full music albums are available to download for free on websites and eBooks have been
pirated in large quantities. This movement of online piracy has influenced the population. Buying
music is unheard of and ridiculed, while books are now downloaded more than they are bought in
stores. This trend of electronic downloading instead of the old fashioned buying from a store has
influenced our society immensely. Not only does it make books and music more affordable, it also
makes it much more convenient for users, as they can gain access to full albums of music and books
from the comfort of their homes. However, this trend of piracy also has its downside. Lesser known
artists and authors whom need the sales from their books and music to make a living are now unable
to because their works are publicly available for free on the internet.

The Odyssey In Tim Burton s 2003 Film Big Fish
In Tim Burton s 2003 film Big Fish, Edward Bloom leaves his small town of Ashton and lives a life
full of adventure. From befriending a giant, working at the circus, getting trapped in a mysterious
town, and robbing a bank, Bloom lives a life of mythic proportions. Many of his trials and tribulations

Themes like loyalty, disguise, and hubris are still relevant in modern literature and society. However,
one aspect of Homer s epic may have been more of an aspiration than a true reflection of the world
around him. Women in ancient Greece were relegated to the margins, while women in The Odyssey
were featured as important, multifaceted characters. The Odyssey would not be truly feminist by today

Homer, as he reduced the inequality women faced in his writing. Homer has shown characteristics of

Terrell Trojan War
The topic of the Trojan War has been analyzed, criticized, and researched for millennia. Many
archeologists have spent decades trying to unveil the truth of the Trojan War. In 1894, the University
of Texas was presented with the opportunity to purchase the alleged site of Troy. Alexander Watkins
Terrell, the minister to the Ottoman Empire, believed it was imperative that the University of Texas
capitalize on this opportunity as he felt the site was teeming with academic possibilities. The
University of Texas, however, did not purchase the site. The decision to not obtain the land was a

proposed that the University of Texas purchase the land alongside its antiquities. He believed that this

opportunity to lead archeologists around the world in the search for the truth of the legendary city of

Stewart And Hurtado
Stewart (1998) examined the applications of feminist theories in personality research, stating how the
incorporation of these concepts may enrich our understanding, while helping us to overcome our
traditional individualism and universalism . In the second chapter of The Handbook of Diversity in
Feminist Psychology, Hurtado (2010) demonstrates many of the concepts discussed by Stewart in this
week s reading. One of Stewart s main points involves reframing one s own perspective in order to
better construct the research question. She believed researchers often construct research problems
from the perspective of educated, middle class professionals and many constructs measured have
different meanings for participants with varying backgrounds (more often idiosyncratic than concrete).
Stewart advocates researchers analyze their own positions in order understand the research problem
more comprehensively. When discussing multicultural feminist theory, Hurtado (2010) touches on
alterations to research methods by implementing self reflexivity and states collaborating with
additional authors, especially across academic disciplines, will broaden researcher s perspectives. This

The Importance Of Agriculture In Schools
I think agriculture can help schools. Through Agriculture in Schools, students ages 10 14 and their
teachers receive training in best practices, including compost making, proper sowing and cultivation.
Students who participate learn to appreciate the great importance and dignity of agricultural work.
Agriculture will help with fresh ingredients; young people often have a poor opinion of agricultural
work. Clearly, this could be the answer to teach students, how to be able to grow more food of better
nutritional quality. Agriculture should be an elective or even a requirement at schools.
Many students who has grow in farms specially, do not want to have agriculture as a courses, because
they aspire to break away from what they consider a financially and morally impoverishing vocation.
So, an option could be to have agriculture, as a club where student interested on learning more about
agriculture, which is the cultivation and breeding of animals, plants and fungi (fungus) for food, fiber,
biofuel, medicinal plants and other products used to sustain and enhance human life. So with this
information, do you believe agriculture can help schools?
First and foremost it would create fresh ingredients, because they could cook with fresh vegetables

The Wallpaper Of Purple By Steven Spielberg
The Sexist Shade of Purple
If Jaws was the movie that jumpstarted Steven Spielberg s career in the film industry, then The Color
Purple was the movie that was able to distinguish Steven from any other movie director during the
time. All of Spielberg s movies prior to 1985 were generally movies of either action packed adventure
or unnerving horror, but once Steven Spielberg announced that he would be doing a movie based on
Alice Walker s book, The Color of Purple, no one knew what to expect. Jump 31 years later, Steven
Spielberg s The Color of Purple, is still seen as a film masterpiece that deals with a grotesque yet
historical insight of African American culture back in the early 1900 s. Through the depiction of visual
art form of film, Steven Spielberg was able to highlight certain aspects of everyday African American
life back then such as the existence of sexism, racism and the importance of familial relationships.
However, Steven Spielberg emphasizes and brings to the spotlight the aspect of sexism of the
historical African American community. With a movie full of uncomfortable and daunting scenes,
Steven Spielberg is able to underline the evil social facet of sexism faced by African American women
in their community in the past. Steven wants his audience to know that side of African American
history and wants us to view African American women differently because of it In the very beginning

Organizations have created new and innovative ways to teamwork, and many of today s organizations

Work Design Option Because of the challenges faced by virtual teams, many organizations that utilize
them encounter significant obstacles to effective work processes (Piccoli Ives, 2004). Team leaders
must understand that a properly designed virtual team, with a solid team structure provides the
foundation for effective team performance and offers a viable strategic approach (Prasad Akhilesh,
2002). Although there are various views on virtual team structures and their effectiveness, research
suggest that there are no specific criteria s to distinguish teams in terms of their virtual structures, as a
result, the most common way of understanding virtual team structures is through the observation of
their organizational chart (Prasad Akhilesh, 2002). However, due to globalization, and the fact that
many virtual teams today are comprised of individuals in various geographical locations, virtual team
designs go far beyond a typical organizational chart. Virtual leaders should understand that an
effective work design must address the contextual elements, and the process and procedures that
individual team members bring to the team (Prasad Akhilesh, 2002). McLean (2014), suggest that
there is no true effective approach to virtual team structures (McLean, 2014), therefore, it is vital that
team leaders realize that paramount to the success of the

Female Idealizations And Norms Within The Films Like Water...
The complex web of cultural determinations and predefined ideological system are predominant in the
lives of the female characters named Tita, Gertrudis, and Frida Kahlo in the movies Like Water for
Chocolate and Frida. Furthermore, throughout history, the development of female idealizations and
norms, which powerfully influences the behavior of women throughout society, has derived from a
masculine structure that is imposed onto the female gender. Although this is still prevalent in modern
culture, throughout the years surrounding the Mexican Revolution, women were perceived as
subordinate to men due to particular cultural determinants and predefined beliefs that existed within
the structure of society. Specifically, this structure played a leading role in the lives of women, which
regarded them as inferior to men while characteristically portraying women in traditional domestic
roles, thereby influencing the social norm of femininity throughout civilization. Predominantly,
throughout the films, the existence of the complex web of cultural determinations and the predefined
ideological system within social and family traditions largely impacts the dominant character and
behavior of Tita, Gertrudis, and Frida. As such, in order to break free from the complex web of

Symphony No. 9 Summary
The concert I watched online was Symphony No. 9 From the New World composed by the great
Antonin Dvorak. This performance was done by the New York Philharmonic and launched the New
York Philharmonic s 175th anniversary season. This concert was performed by an orchestra and was
definitely a performance I enjoyed to watch and listen to.
In the beginning of the performance, the orchestra begins with an adagio tempo, using instruments
such as cellos and violins. The tempo is very slow and soothing until it suddenly interrupted by the
sound of trumpets. This is setting a tone that something very dramatic is about to happen. After the
trumpets sound, oboes and flutes begin to play using the same adagio tempo as it was used in the
beginning of the performance. As the flutes and clarinets slowly stop, you can see the conductor, Alan
Gilbert, slowly move his arms apart to instruct the orchestra to get prepared. Gilbert then swings his
arms up and the orchestra switches to an allegro tempo by using crescendo. Violins, cellos, drums,
French horns, tenor trombones and bass trombones are now used to create a suspenseful tone as if
something tragic has just happened. It then changes back to the adagio tempo using instruments with
low pitch and then transfers back to the oboes, flutes and violins. The first ten minutes of the
performance is a wide variation between adagio and allegro and molto allegro and basically switches
tempos between the three which is why I really enjoyed

Japan s Attack on Pearl Harbour Essay
Japan s Attack on Pearl Harbour
In December 1941, Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese. It was the consequence of a series of
events which brought tension between Japan and America to boiling point. Japan was a country
growing in power and stature and America soon came to realise that this growth could prove a threat
to them. America aimed to stop Japan s growth in its tracks as they realised that if the situation was
left to evolve much longer then the situation may be out of their control. However, it can be argued
that by not seriously dealing with this threat until the 1940 s, America had left things too late and
faced an opponent who would not back down.

At the Washington Conferences in 1921, America reasoned with the Japanese government and decided
that Japan s naval bases and naval arms would be limited. For every 5 ships that America had, Japan
would be allowed a maximum of 3. Although Japan agreed, they still aimed to expand more so that
they could become one of the major world powers.
The Great Depression in America hit Japan with force. Japan was affected because America s trade
was vital to Japan s survival. Trade with America became limited and Japans economic prosperity was
at risk. Japan needed more imports. The army decided on a militaristic option and seized Manchuria,
as it had rich supplies of raw materials such as coal, iron ore, timber and rice. They believed that by
expanding, Japan could become more powerful. As Japanese troops were already stationed in
Manchuria, it proved an easy target for the Japanese. The Americans, focusing on their own needs, did
not interfere with the seizing of Manchuria. This proved to be a bad decision for them as their trade
links with China were badly affected, but more importantly Because of the success in Manchuria the
military gained power. The public became more enthusiastic and supportive of militaristic
nationalism. This led to the military running the government by the late 1930s as many people

Lars Eighners essay On Dumpster Diving describes the lifestyle of living out of a dumpster. Lars
demonstrates that anyone can achieve a fulfilling life without the constraints of society and material
wealth. He finds nearly everything he needs and sometimes more just from the refuse of others.
Firstly, what is dumpster diving? Dumpster diving is the practice of sifting through commercial or
residential waste in order to obtain items one might find useful that have been discarded by their
owners. Dumpster diving is largely associated with the homeless or people with little or no source of

He also goes on in paragraph 39 to talk about drugs and medicine and how he often has to hoard the
essential ones. He mentions however that drugs should not be taken lightly without some grounding in
pharmacology, this further proved that he has been well educated in the past. In Paragraph 53, he
talked on how he often finds books, diaries and papers discarded by college students. He remarks that
he is horrified to discover the kinds of papers that merit and A, which means he must have had
experience with the grading system. However he adds that he is grateful for the number of good books
and magazines they toss out, this shows his appreciation for good literature and speaks to his educated
background.
Eighner showed his intelligence throughout the essay, from the words he used, to his in depth
knowledge on various foods and how to know if they are safe to eat or not. Eighner talked about how
he frequented neighborhoods associated with the wealthy (Paragraph 21) because the rich are more
wasteful and tend to throw out items with no real issues. His decision to scavenge in the more
prosperous neighborhoods struck me as one of an intelligent individual.

would have. Paragraph 37 he talked about how he feels people who live off dumpsters should be

This text is a political speech that Daniel O`Connell, one of the fathers of the Irish Republic, gave at
the House of Commons in London in 1836. The aim of O Connell s speech was to get equal justice for
the Irish people as members of the British Crown, and in the same way that by that time the Scottish,
English and Welsh people already had. The majority of the Parliament s members were protestant and
reluctant to give Irish Catholics more rights than they already had.
As the time O`Connell spoke to the Parliament about the equal justice, he had already become a
member of this chamber several years ago and was successful in getting more reforms for the Irish
cause. Ireland had a parliament since the year 1297 but the British crown abolished ... Show more

He tries it using different verbs like ...will you, can you, refuse you... and trying to reach them in their
quality as well educated and wise men. He mentions the year 1825 in which the Irish people also tried
to get from the Treasury Bench emancipation and they did not get it. But he appeals emotionally to
them affirming that ...I am the living representative of those hopes... of reform.
O Connell s more emotional tone of the last paragraph means to show the Parliament his love for his
country Ireland and its unjust situation. He personifies his country by seeing himself as its friend,
servant, stave ... and also as the voice of its sentiments, but above all as the voice of all the Irish
people. Once again he repeats what he wants, justice: ... I ask you only for justice . ... .
He never leaves an amiable tone during the whole speech and does not care about the taunts as
Irishman and Papist that he can get from the members of the House. He ends but the speech very
firmly and once again with the aim to get equal justice, with the words ... I demand, I respectfully
insist: on equal justice for Ireland, on the same principle by it has been administrated to Scotland and
England. I will not take less. Refuse me that if you can

Compare And Contrast Essay On The Maze Runner
The Maze Runner is a New York Times bestselling book made by James Dashner. The book has also
been converted into a motion picture. Although the maze runner did add and remove many scenes
from the book, it stayed with many areas that the book focused on. One, for example, is when Thomas
finds himself in a cage going up somewhere, he is petrified and brainwashed, and all he can remember
is his name. The movie goes along with this, but they execute the idea that Thomas remembers his
name. Also in the book, Thomas is petrified of the gladers, but in the movie, Thomas attempts to run
yet falls down, he then realizes he s in the maze. Also, when Teresa comes, she is in a coma some days
after arriving, but in the movie, she wakes up after some time.

Napoleon Hero or Tyrant?
Napoleon Bonaparte goes down in history as one the greatest military commanders of all time. Many
consider him a hero of the French people and the people of the conquered lands spreading his reforms
everywhere. Others believe that he is a tyrant, oppressing citizens and engaging in aggressive
unnecessary wars. This is a controversial topic and both sides can bring up compelling arguments.
First we must define a hero and tyrant, a hero is someone who is courageous, brave and positively
impacts people around him and leaves a legacy. Napoleon directly fits that definition. A tyrant is a
cruel oppressive ruler who treats people unfairly. Napoleon Bonaparte leaves a heroic legacy due to
the actions in his life such as being a brave and courageous soldier, furthering public works in France

Comparing Hughes s Essay The Negro Artists And The Racial...
In his essay The Negro Artists and the Racial Mountain, Langston Hughes shared his thoughts with
the readers regarding racial identity. He believed that every individual should be proud of who they
are and stand by their race. The idea of passing would be considered extremely offensive and even an
action of betrayal by him. Instead of following the steps of the socially superior group whites in this
case, Hughes suggested that the minority groups need to stay true to them selves and their culture, and
they need to united and fight for their rights. It is only through doing so that the minority groups can
rise up to the equal of the superior group, not by submitting to it. His arguments are reflected in Nella
Larsen s Passing through the two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout his essay, Hughes suggested that one should never to fear his/her identity, and never to be
ashamed of it. He ends one of his paragraphs with a very powerful statement: Why should I want to be
white? I am a Negro and beautiful. (The Negro Artists and the Racial Mountain). In the novel, this
idea is again challenged by Clare, who represented the opposite of what Hughes stood for. Clare was
in fear. She was always in fear, because she was not who she claimed to be. Clare wanted to enjoy
rights she did not have, but yet she did not wish to fight for it. Clare was always in fear, because she
had chosen to join the enemy . She married a man that bare hatred to her race, and ignored her own
people for years. In order to be able to live the life she had, she cut all ties with her family, and finally
connected with them after she accidentally ran into Irene. But she was still not onboard with Hughes
ideas by then. Even thought Clare discovered her longing for her other identity and people, she
initially did not wish to give up her other life either. She acted among the black community in a
secretive way, which is due to her fear of being recognized. However, many from her own community
would probably share the same feelings as Hughes would have, a sense of betrayal and ashamed for
Clare for she can not face her true self. Thus, Clare was caught in between the fear of her identity
being compromised by the whites, and also the fear of the despise from her own people. Clare lived a
double life, but yet neither life truly belonged to her. She thought she could be part of something she is
not, but Clare ended up getting caught in between, losing both. She was no longer part of either group,
and she feared the disapprove of her identity from both groups because of her

Corroboree Frog Research Paper
The corroboree frog is a native Australian frog found in the mountain ranges of the Kosciusko national
park. There are two variations of the frogs inside the species these include the northern corroboree
frog (NCF) and the southern corroboree frog (SCF). Historically scientist named these frogs based on
where they were found in the Kosciusko national park. The NCF lives in the northern parks of
Kosciusko national park, Namiadgi National park and Rinabella national park, as seen in the image
below. The NCF lives between 750 1800 m above sea level (Toragona zoo, Corroboree frog habitat).
The SCF lies entirely in Kosciusko national park, form Smiggln hole to maragle range, from
southwards to northwards. The SCF generally lives from 1300 1760 m above sea level. Currently the
distribution of the frog is widely spread as the frog try to move from areas infected with the chytrids

The Dangers Of The Atomic Bomb
On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 am America released an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in Japan,
(Hersey 1). This action was done to put an end to World War II, and bring the soldiers of America
back home. For many Americans, the dropping of the bomb meant nothing but to do what had to be
done. The end results were not taken into account because there was no way to know what could
happen when using new technology, (Okazaki). The results of the atomic bomb alone had a casualty
rate of about 135,000 people, of that 66,000 died and 69,000 were injured, (The Atomic Bombings).
Prior to the atomic bomb, Japan had already lost their a majority of their defense, only had their navy
left and was nearly destroyed. From data, we were able to find out an equivalent to that bomb had
more power than two thousands tons of TNT, (Hersey 49). The excessive amount of power did not
help to solve anything, it only created a race for nuclear power, (The Cold War). The dropping of the
Atomic bomb was an inhumane use of power and all countries should destroy the use of atomic power
because it does not single out the enemies from Japan, but it also affects Japan s civilians in that area
innocent or not. All within a few seconds, families and friends were torn from each other without a
chance for any last words, all at the hands of the American people. The result of this action led very
few people who were able to care for those who needed help because very few people were left
uninjured. The

Essay on Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko In recent years, Hollywood has specialised in churning out mainstream trash; generic
fodder not even fit for the cutting room floor. Yet despite these movies shortcomings, they continue to
enjoy success at the box office. Sequel upon sequel, photo fit remake upon photo fit remake,
frequently taking the box office by storm whilst simultaneously relegating smaller independent

filmmaker is director Richard ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, each frame speaks to us on more profound terms than the majority of arthouse films would
claim to do. This is, in part, due to the impeccable performances by each and every member of the
cast. Jake Gyllenhaal, a relative unknown, delivers a subtle yet emotionally charged performance as
Donnie himself the scene in which he tells his psychologist of his various childhood traumas is made
both funny and moving by the haunting way in which Jake delivers each line, contrasted with the
almost childish qualities of his movements on the couch. Most incredible of all, however, is his
terrifying screen presence as he trudges slowly through a deserted corridor or along a dark street, head
tilted slightly forward, face fixed in a confused, bewildered expression. Drew Barrymore is also
superb as the liberal high school teacher rejected and scorned in a Conservative education system,
while Patrick Swayze is excellent in his extended cameo, a smartly observed satire of a self help guru
with a few skeletons in the closet.
Where the movie comes into its own, however, is in its ability to incorporate and deal with a variety of
genres. Every movie genre seems to make an appearance, so much so that to categorise the movie as
simply a psychological horror or a supernatural thriller would be an unforgivable insult. Even

subject, because I have a fourteen year old son that plays a few of these violent video games. I wanted

Most OIT protocols include an initial dose escalation, followed by a gradual dose build up and a

Raz On The Autonomy Of Legal Reasoning
The autonomous nature of legal reasoning is the subject of much contention amongst legal actors and
is understood to be restrictively in positivist Raz . In his paper On the Autonomy of Legal Reasoning
Raz asserts that legal reasoning reasoning according to law is an instance of moral reasoning, that
legal reasoning is not, in the strong sense, autonomous. This view is based on the assumption that
legal doctrines are only justified if they are morally justified. Below, follows an appraisal of the
various justifications of this assertion and a defence of Raz s position on the autonomy of legal
reasoning.
Legal positivism formulated by English jurist John Austin characterises the system of laws, the
existence of which, is dependent on social facts . Positivism accepts the Separation thesis that there is
no necessary connection between law and morality . To this end, it denies any necessary moral criteria
of legality . Furthermore, it does not necessarily accept that moral principles can directly determine
whether certain rules are valid law, as naturalism does . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Supply chain management is the active management of supply chain activities to maximize customer
value and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. The management of the supply chain involves
the efforts of all partners in the supply chain working together to effectively and efficiently deliver

results in methods and rules that allows predictability, and agreed standard and guidelines. These
standards will enable partners throughout the supply chain the freedom to apply influence on industry
standards that will result in sustainable business practices that mirror the needs of and integrated

To maintain a business, supply chain management needs strong certainties on the everyday action of
the business from all accomplices in the supply chain. To spare cost and convey more products to
more destinations quicker, a business and their suppliers must have an institutionalized supply chain.
The test is to place the emphasis on stock inventory management instead of information management
(Spiegeleire, 2015). The absences of supply chain measures will build the expense of inventory

How Technology Has Changed Our Lives
Introduction Today a lot of people use technology such as computers, smartphones, and tablets to get
information, to buy something, and to communicate with family and friends. Since technology has
been developed, people s lives have also been changed. One of the examples is that many companies
have started to sell their products through the Internet and customers look for goods and buy them on
the Internet. Before technology was developed, people had to go to stores to purchase products.
However, we can look for and purchase products whenever and wherever we want now. Shopping has
become more convenient. I also often use technology to buy products, especially flight tickets. Since I
came to the United States, whenever I go traveling or go back to Japan during breaks, I used an online
travel agency, Expedia, to purchase my flight tickets. This is because it is very convenient. I can
search and reserve my flight quickly. Usually, I do not have any problem with Expedia, but I had
trouble with it because of technology during this spring break. I think that if humans operated the

My Ineffective Service Technology experience During this spring break, I went to Florida with my

Therefore, women believed that they had no choice other than to side with men. They were dependent
on their fathers or husbands income, which prevented them from freedom. Although women did not
work as judges, lawyers, or any other job in the public world, they worked at home. Women were
wives, mothers, and daughters, and without them, the state would collapse and fall to pieces, without
whose work your sons, Sir, would cease to exist, (Three Guineas 54).
Although this was unjust, men were not entirely at fault. Married men got paid twice that of a
bachelor. Half of men s salary belonged to their wives, but women had little access to their husband s
salary. We may assume that the wife of an educated man has as much money to spend, (Three Guineas
55). Then why, didn t women spend that money on pleasures that she enjoyed? Because men made the
money, women allowed them to decide how it should be spent. She lays out thousands and thousands
of pounds upon clubs to which her own sex in not admitted; upon racecourses where she may not ride;
upon colleges from which her own sex is excluded. She pays a huge bill annually for wine which she
does not drink and for cigars which she does not smoke, (Three Guineas 56). Once all of the bills were
paid, women should have spent their share on causes that were important to them, on something that
would benefit their own well being, such as education. Without their own

Index Of Attitudes Toward Income Inequality
To ensure that this effect was not due to demographic factors, I ran a linear regression model with an
index of attitudes towards income inequality. The index is comprised of responses to three survey
questions. The first survey question asks, after respondents are shown a graph charting the top and
bottom twentieth percentiles of average household income over the last forty years, It is good, bad, or
neither good nor bad that the difference between the top and the bottom incomes has changed in this
way? The second asks, Do you favor, oppose, or neither favor nor oppose the government trying to
make this income difference smaller? It is notable that this question garners much less support than
questions asking whether respondents support

The Death And Life Of Great American Cities By Jane Jacobs
Recently I read a book titled The Death and Life of Great American Cities written by Jane Jacobs
(1961), which basically criticizes the urban planning processes generally employed in the planning,
renovation and rebuilding of cities. Though it was published in 1961, the book is still considered a
relevant piece of work and offers great insight to the various and sometimes ignored or unseen facets
of the way a city organizes itself despite the city planning process. The book is considered many
professionals involved in the planning and design of cities a must read even today. In the book, Jacob
s states that she has identified four criteria which must be present in an urbanized environment for it to
be place which will naturally promote a self sustaining, and resilient socioeconomic character. The set
of the four criteria can be used a framework and a tool that will aid the planning process of the new
urbanism. The wave of change to be more sustainable is gaining some steam at present in Phoenix.
Which is a relatively large (7 million people) in the metropolitan area which is located in the
southwest United states. The City of Phoenix is my employer and where I currently reside. Therefore,
it must be said, that my conclusion s may have some element of bias in them even though I will make
a very concerted effort to avoid it. I expect that my evaluation of the presence or absence of the four
criteria will provide a point of reference which can be used to predict the

Taking a Look at Rosemary
Rosemary has been used for centuries as a pain reliever and cooking supplement. But through time
rosemary has been not only a name, but adapted to modern day medicine. Rosemary may even be the
future aid to slow the progression of Alzheimer s disease. It could be the medicine of the future.
Rosemary, or Rosmarinus officinalis, was originally grown in the Mediterranean. However, there are
many recordings of rosemary in Egypt where they buried their dead with rosemary on their graves or
in their tombs. Rosemary was also mentioned in Shakespeare, in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet wore
rosemary throughout the entire story to foreshadow her death. And in Anzac day in Australia citizens
are expected to wear rosemary in honor of their dead ancestors (2014 Monterey Bay Spice Company).
Aside from rosemary s obvious symbolism for death it also symbolizes memory. Shakespeare
mentioned rosemary once again in Hamlet, but this time speaking of it out of an aid for remembrance.
In Latin rosemary is Ros Maris, which means dew of the sea because of its growth near water and in
Spain it is called Romero. The reasoning behind rosemary s name is because if the story once told
about a Mediterranean woman who, in hopes to hide her baby from King Herod, hid under a rosemary
bush when she attempted to flee to Egypt. The woman s name was Mary and rosemary was considered
a rose bush. In the Middle Ages rosemary was also burnt in the homes of many because of its foretold
ability to ward

Enlightenment Influence On The French Revolution
The French Revolution was a period of far reaching social and political change in France that lasted
from 1789 to 1799. Before the revolution there was a period of time called the Enlightenment. The
Enlightenment was a philosophical movement in which followers considered that human reason
brought a move from theory to practice and criticism to reforming education, household
administration, social reactions and politics. Voltaire, a French philosopher and contributor to the Age
of Enlightenment, expressed these ideas utilizing his intelligence, wit and style to mark his name as
one of France s greatest writers. The Enlightenment influenced the French Revolution to a great extent
by introducing new ideas that encouraged questioning of authority and religion, advancing people s
outlook on commodities, and forcing citizens to compare their need with the Republic s needs. This
further brought an uprising of people wanting more such as equality and civil rights. In the process to
do so there were 250,000 casualties in the Reign of Terror followed the Thermidorian Reaction which
implemented an oligarchy government called the Directory. Royalist riots prompted the Coup d etat of
Fructidor which brought Napoleon into Directory which he later overthrows and creates an
Authoritarian Republic. The ideas of equality and rights to men which were stressed by Enlightenment
philosophers are all incorporated into documents 1,4 and 5. Society before the French revolution was

Drones and remote controlled cars are both controlled by a remote, but a Drone has a more advanced
remote that can turn in various directions and has a life of lever that inclines it. Drones and remote
controlled cars are both complex machines with lots of features and are fun to use,but the drone has a
little microchip so you can see where you flying unlike remote controlled cars where you have to keep
an eye on it. Drones and remote controlled cars both make noise when they are operating, but a drone
is louder when they are operating because of there 4 fans on it that make noise. There are many types
of drones that do different things like fly straight up in the sky and some have good cameras and some
have bad cameras. Also drones do not have a pilot and don t take off like a plane they go straight

Family Therapy Using Adler s Early Recollection
Family therapy using Adler s early recollection technique has been shown to be beneficial when
working with a child with RAD for example, (Steinhart et.al, 2012). Specific early memories are
explored due to their influence on what a person believes and how they therefore behave (Steinhart
et.al, 2012). Whilst T s memories could be an area of focus in treatment due to his reoccurring
nightmares, due to T s age and the potential potency of these experiences, a more gradual exposure to
his trauma would be advised. Gradual exposure can help maltreated children gain mastery over trauma
reminders, (Cohen et al, 2012). Additionally, as this approach lacks caregiver focus, it would not be
recommended in this case.
Play therapy has been shown to be a particularly effective treatment with foster care families,
Steinhart et al. Therapeutic play can provide a sense of security and can offer the child a way to
communicate in which they are comfortable, Ayling and Stringer, 2013). Importantly, playing with an
adult can build neurological structure for children and promote adaptability in our brains, (Ayling and
Stringer, 2013, (Perry, 2002) 2009) 131. Difficult emotions and experiences combined with
pleasurable activities are explored in an environment where a child can learn how to trust in the
company of a safe and caring adult Ayling and Stringer, 2013.
The effectiveness of play therapy comes from the integration of play based skills into the day to day
family life interactions.

Smithfield Foods Business Model Essay
The is no magic formula in developing a competency based model. Nonetheless, the key to any model
is doing something that works for the firm. Do not copy another business competency model as there
are too many variables from the organizational culture to company goals. Recall a competency based
model measuring the learning of skill or task vs. the time it takes to accomplish the job (Kadam,
2017). Once a person masters a specific ability then he or she is moved to the next training phase.
Several organizations use on the job training to train employee as well as to retain and eliminate

Refrigeration Systems That Use Environment Friendly...
Refrigeration systems that use environment friendly refrigerants provide a sustainability advantage
when compared to other refrigerant selections. However, the energy use associated with refrigeration
system operation and the environmental impacts associated with its generation and distribution often
outweigh the choice of refrigerant. To minimize environmental impacts associated with refrigeration
system operation, it is reasonable to evaluate the prospects of a clean source of energy. Research has
demonstrated that solar energy is an ideal source for low temperature heating applications such as
space and domestic hot water heating. From a sustainability perspective, directly using solar as a
primary energy source is attractive because of its universal availability, low environmental impact, and
low or no ongoing fuel cost. Research has demonstrated that solar energy is an ideal source for
lowtemperature heating applications such as space and domestic hot water heating. Solar heating
applications are intuitive since, when solar energy is absorbed on a surface, the surface temperature
rises, providing a heating potential. The use of solar energy to provide refrigeration is less intuitive. In
this article, we review three approaches that use solar energy to provide refrigeration at temperatures
below 0°C (32°F). In addition to reviewing the potential technologies, we compare their operating
characteristics. We conclude that only one of the three

The Arts and Crafts Movement Essay
The Arts and Craft movement was a social and artistic movement, which began in Britain in the
second half of the nineteenth century and continued into the twentieth spreading to continental Europe
and the USA. Its adherents artists, architects, designers and Craftsmen sought to reassert the
importance of and craftsmanship in all arts in the face of increasing industrialization, which they felt
was sacrificing quality in the pursuit of quantity. Its supporters and practioners were united not so
much by a style rather than the common goal a desire to break down the hierarchy of the arts and to
revive traditional handicrafts and make art that could be affordable to all.
The leading exponent and propagandist of the movement was the ... Show more content on

This satisfaction, the proponents of this movement felt, was totally denied in the industrialised
processes inherent in compartmentalised machine production.
In the United States, the Arts and Crafts Movement took on a distinctively more bourgeois flavor.
While the European movement tried to recreate the virtuous world of craft labor that was being
destroyed by industrialization, Americans tried to establish a new source of virtue to replace heroic
craft production: the tasteful middle class home. They thought that the simple but refined aesthetics of
Arts and Crafts decorative arts would ennoble the new experience of industrial consumerism, making
individuals more rational and society more harmonious. In short, the American Arts and Crafts
Movement was the aesthetic counterpart of its contemporary political movement: Progressivism.
Art Nouveau, 1890 1914, explores a new style in the visual arts and architecture that developed in
Europe and North America at the end of the nineteenth century. The exhibition is divided into three
sections: the first focuses on the 1900 World s Fair in Paris, where Art Nouveau was established as the
first new decorative style of the twentieth century; the second examines the sources that influenced the
style; and the third looks at its development and fruition in major cities in Europe and North

  • 2. The Nature Of Equality In Anthem By Ayn Rand The Nature of Equality In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, nature is portrayed as a safe haven, and it is something that Equality can experience without thinking twice. Nature is an escape, a place to be you, a place to be unique. Everything in the society is sheltered and unknown, Equality describes nature in a different way than he described anything else in the book. There is a sense of relief, and it is like Equality lets his guard down and is free to be himself for a short amount of time as he describes nature. Equality describes the sky with great detail. He explains the three different colors of the sky at three different times of the day. The sky is green and cold in our windows to the east (Rand 27). He pays great attention to detail and the vivid colors and the way the sky looks at various times. Equality feels a sense of relief throughout the book through nature. Individuality is Equality and Liberty met because she worked in the fields near where Equality worked as a Street Sweeper. Liberty worked in nature, and lived in the Home of the Peasants. Again, with strict government laws, Equality was not supposed to have feelings for Liberty, which he does anyways. Nature plays a big part in their relationship too, Equality describes her fields as black and ploughed, and they lie like great fan before us, with their furrows gathered in some hand beyond the sky, spreading forth from that hand, opening wide apart as they come toward us, like black pleats that ... • 3. How The Drought Has Gotten So Bad And Discovered That... MY QUESTION Three summers ago, my friends and I had an idea to rent out a giant inflatable waterslide to spend the day playing on it. We called Jennifer Bubbles, the place that rents out waterslides, and picked the biggest one. It was this huge inflatable thing that was half a bounce house and half a waterslide. The next summer, we rented out the same one. It wasn t until last summer, that we had a problem renting it out. We called Jennifer bubbles again and she told us that because of the drought, she was not allowed to rent to anyone because too much water was being used for it. My friends and I were pretty upset, but we ended up just throwing water balloons at each other that summer. I questioned how the drought had gotten so bad and discovered that climate change, also known as global warming, was the cause. Each year the earth continues to get warmer and warmer, and by the end of the 21st century, average surface temperatures can rise between 35 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. There are many theories as to what causes climate change, but which ones are liable for a warmer earth? Pollution, green house gases, and aerosols in the atmosphere are causes of the increase in the earths temperate, but which has the most effect on climate change or do all three have equal effect? I took an interest in climate change after reading a few articles about the conspiracy of chem trails. It s basically the theory of governmental airplanes shooting chemicals into the sky to control the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Harshness Of Life In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men On February 27, 1902, in Salinas County, California, an American Novelist named John Steinbeck was born. He had an early appreciation for the land, in particular, California s Salinas Valley, which would be a big impact on his writing later on. Steinbeck s life is very similar to the book he would write, Of Mice and Men, which takes place in his hometown Salinas, and also has the same theme of Steinbeck s life. Steinbeck experienced harshness in his life, drifting out of schools for six years until he dropped out for good. There are many themes found in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, but the most significant theme is the harshness of life, which frequently appears and develops throughout the novel. The harshness of life theme is shown right at the start of the book with two examples. The first example appears on page five when Lennie tries to cover up killing a mouse to George. George sees that Lennie is holding something and when he asks what it is, Lennie says Jus a dead mouse, George. I didn t kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead (5). This proves the harshness of life because Lennie could not control what he wanted. And in life, in order to succeed and live a good life, you are going to have to be able to control what you want. Another example of the harshness of life occurs when Lennie was talking about him petting the mice and how it s not under his control to stop it. He says I d pet em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead (10). This is a great example of the harshness of life because it shows killing. Lennie kills the fluffy animal, but he did not want to. Steinbeck shows with these two examples that harshness of life doesn t have to include only human beings, it also can be animals. The reason why George and Lennie travel together is in fact because of the harshness of life. When George is talking to Slim about Lennie and how they are together now, he says, I turns to Lennie and says, Jump in. An he jumps. Couldn t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him (40). George was being a jerk to Lennie and ended up having to save his life. This is a big harshness of life because George was a jerk to ... • 6. Carlody Hobson Speech Analysis Imagine living in a world that is seemingly against all that you are and all that you want to be. Through modern stereotypes and accustomed oppression, the odds are working against minorities. As a society we have become familiarized with the comfort of color blindness, this is a term used for the ignorance that surrounds diversity issues today. Mellody Hobson, executive president of Ariel Investments, is an African American woman that has chosen to confront the lack of understanding involving diversity issues involving race, gender, sexuality, religion, socioeconomic status, and education and tagging it as Color Bravery. Throughout her discussion, Hobson engages and connects with her audience through her personal stories, facial expressions, tone of voice, and passion about diversity. Hobson sees her audience as individuals who are struggling to understand the diversity issues that surround race, gender, and religion. She assumes that her audience has little awareness of the institutionalized injustices minorities face everyday. With that being said, she does not use her discussion to ridicule or judge them for not understanding the real problems involving diversity, instead she focuses on opening their eyes to begin to understand the obstacles our society needs to overcome in order to start celebrating diversity. Throughout her speech, Hobson infers that her audience needs a little help grasping the significance of her anecdotes. For example, she starts her discussion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The number of cases of online piracy has skyrocketed in the last few years. Of all the types of media, books and music have been two of the most pirated. Full music albums are available to download for free on websites and eBooks have been pirated in large quantities. This movement of online piracy has influenced the population. Buying music is unheard of and ridiculed, while books are now downloaded more than they are bought in stores. This trend of electronic downloading instead of the old fashioned buying from a store has influenced our society immensely. Not only does it make books and music more affordable, it also makes it much more convenient for users, as they can gain access to full albums of music and books from the comfort of their homes. • 12. Stewart And Hurtado Stewart (1998) examined the applications of feminist theories in personality research, stating how the incorporation of these concepts may enrich our understanding, while helping us to overcome our traditional individualism and universalism . In the second chapter of The Handbook of Diversity in Feminist Psychology, Hurtado (2010) demonstrates many of the concepts discussed by Stewart in this week s reading. One of Stewart s main points involves reframing one s own perspective in order to better construct the research question. She believed researchers often construct research problems from the perspective of educated, middle class professionals and many constructs measured have different meanings for participants with varying backgrounds (more often idiosyncratic than concrete). Stewart advocates researchers analyze their own positions in order understand the research problem more comprehensively. Through Agriculture in Schools, students ages 10 14 and their teachers receive training in best practices, including compost making, proper sowing and cultivation. The complex web of cultural determinations and predefined ideological system are predominant in the lives of the female characters named Tita, Gertrudis, and Frida Kahlo in the movies Like Water for Chocolate and Frida. Furthermore, throughout history, the development of female idealizations and norms, which powerfully influences the behavior of women throughout society, has derived from a masculine structure that is imposed onto the female gender. Although this is still prevalent in modern culture, throughout the years surrounding the Mexican Revolution, women were perceived as subordinate to men due to particular cultural determinants and predefined beliefs that existed within the structure of society. Specifically, this structure played a leading role in the lives of women, which regarded them as inferior to men while characteristically portraying women in traditional domestic roles, thereby influencing the social norm of femininity throughout civilization. This performance was done by the New York Philharmonic and launched the New York Philharmonic s 175th anniversary season. This concert was performed by an orchestra and was definitely a performance I enjoyed to watch and listen to. In the beginning of the performance, the orchestra begins with an adagio tempo, using instruments such as cellos and violins. The tempo is very slow and soothing until it suddenly interrupted by the sound of trumpets. This is setting a tone that something very dramatic is about to happen. After the trumpets sound, oboes and flutes begin to play using the same adagio tempo as it was used in the beginning of the performance. As the flutes and clarinets slowly stop, you can see the conductor, Alan Gilbert, slowly move his arms apart to instruct the orchestra to get prepared. Gilbert then swings his arms up and the orchestra switches to an allegro tempo by using crescendo. Violins, cellos, drums, French horns, tenor trombones and bass trombones are now used to create a suspenseful tone as if something tragic has just happened. It then changes back to the adagio tempo using instruments with low pitch and then transfers back to the oboes, flutes and violins. The first ten minutes of the performance is a wide variation between adagio and allegro and molto allegro and basically switches tempos between the three which is why I really enjoyed ... The Great Depression in America hit Japan with force. Japan was affected because America s trade was vital to Japan s survival. Trade with America became limited and Japans economic prosperity was at risk. Japan needed more imports. The army decided on a militaristic option and seized Manchuria, as it had rich supplies of raw materials such as coal, iron ore, timber and rice. They believed that by expanding, Japan could become more powerful. As Japanese troops were already stationed in Manchuria, it proved an easy target for the Japanese. The Americans, focusing on their own needs, did not interfere with the seizing of Manchuria. This proved to be a bad decision for them as their trade links with China were badly affected, but more importantly Because of the success in Manchuria the military gained power. Thesis Support On Dumpster Diving Essay DINA ODUM Professor Moskowitz ENGLISH 121 ESSAY 3 11/5/2014 Thesis and Support: On Dumpster Diving by Lars Eighner Lars Eighners essay On Dumpster Diving describes the lifestyle of living out of a dumpster. Lars demonstrates that anyone can achieve a fulfilling life without the constraints of society and material wealth. He finds nearly everything he needs and sometimes more just from the refuse of others. Firstly, what is dumpster diving? Dumpster diving is the practice of sifting through commercial or residential waste in order to obtain items one might find useful that have been discarded by their owners. He remarks that he is horrified to discover the kinds of papers that merit and A, which means he must have had experience with the grading system. However he adds that he is grateful for the number of good books and magazines they toss out, this shows his appreciation for good literature and speaks to his educated background. Eighner showed his intelligence throughout the essay, from the words he used, to his in depth knowledge on various foods and how to know if they are safe to eat or not. Eighner talked about how he frequented neighborhoods associated with the wealthy (Paragraph 21) because the rich are more wasteful and tend to throw out items with no real issues. His decision to scavenge in the more prosperous neighborhoods struck me as one of an intelligent individual. Discipline is another characteristic of Eighner that I would not have assumed any dumpster diver would have. The aim of O Connell s speech was to get equal justice for the Irish people as members of the British Crown, and in the same way that by that time the Scottish, English and Welsh people already had. The majority of the Parliament s members were protestant and reluctant to give Irish Catholics more rights than they already had. He believed that every individual should be proud of who they are and stand by their race. The idea of passing would be considered extremely offensive and even an action of betrayal by him. Instead of following the steps of the socially superior group whites in this case, Hughes suggested that the minority groups need to stay true to them selves and their culture, and they need to united and fight for their rights. He ends one of his paragraphs with a very powerful statement: Why should I want to be white? I am a Negro and beautiful. (The Negro Artists and the Racial Mountain). In the novel, this idea is again challenged by Clare, who represented the opposite of what Hughes stood for. Clare was in fear. She was always in fear, because she was not who she claimed to be. Clare wanted to enjoy rights she did not have, but yet she did not wish to fight for it. Clare was always in fear, because she had chosen to join the enemy . She married a man that bare hatred to her race, and ignored her own people for years. In order to be able to live the life she had, she cut all ties with her family, and finally connected with them after she accidentally ran into Irene. But she was still not onboard with Hughes ideas by then. Even thought Clare discovered her longing for her other identity and people, she initially did not wish to give up her other life either. She acted among the black community in a secretive way, which is due to her fear of being recognized. However, many from her own community would probably share the same feelings as Hughes would have, a sense of betrayal and ashamed for Clare for she can not face her true self. Thus, Clare was caught in between the fear of her identity being compromised by the whites, and also the fear of the despise from her own people. • 42. Women Seeing the World through a Different Lens in Three... At the time Virginia Woolf wrote The Years and Three Guineas, there were many differences between men and women, one of which was education. Most women were not educated, which prevented them from entering into agency. Women allowed themselves to be played by history. In order for them to change a world that was dominated by men, women needed to refuse what history said was their essence, and rather, use that essence to create critical ways of being in the world. The photograph, a crudely colored photograph of your world as it appears to us who see it from the threshold of the private house; through the shadow of the veil that St. Paul still lays upon your eyes; from the bridge which connects the private house with the world of ... They were dependent on their fathers or husbands income, which prevented them from freedom. Although women did not work as judges, lawyers, or any other job in the public world, they worked at home. Women were wives, mothers, and daughters, and without them, the state would collapse and fall to pieces, without whose work your sons, Sir, would cease to exist, (Three Guineas 54). Although this was unjust, men were not entirely at fault. Married men got paid twice that of a bachelor. Half of men s salary belonged to their wives, but women had little access to their husband s salary. We may assume that the wife of an educated man has as much money to spend, (Three Guineas 55). Then why, didn t women spend that money on pleasures that she enjoyed? Because men made the money, women allowed them to decide how it should be spent. She lays out thousands and thousands of pounds upon clubs to which her own sex in not admitted; upon racecourses where she may not ride; upon colleges from which her own sex is excluded. She pays a huge bill annually for wine which she does not drink and for cigars which she does not smoke, (Three Guineas 56). Once all of the bills were paid, women should have spent their share on causes that were important to them, on something that would benefit their own well being, such as education. • 43. Index Of Attitudes Toward Income Inequality To ensure that this effect was not due to demographic factors, I ran a linear regression model with an index of attitudes towards income inequality. The index is comprised of responses to three survey questions. The first survey question asks, after respondents are shown a graph charting the top and bottom twentieth percentiles of average household income over the last forty years, It is good, bad, or neither good nor bad that the difference between the top and the bottom incomes has changed in this way? The second asks, Do you favor, oppose, or neither favor nor oppose the government trying to make this income difference smaller? It is notable that this question garners much less support than questions asking whether respondents support ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The Death And Life Of Great American Cities By Jane Jacobs Recently I read a book titled The Death and Life of Great American Cities written by Jane Jacobs (1961), which basically criticizes the urban planning processes generally employed in the planning, renovation and rebuilding of cities. Though it was published in 1961, the book is still considered a relevant piece of work and offers great insight to the various and sometimes ignored or unseen facets of the way a city organizes itself despite the city planning process. The book is considered many professionals involved in the planning and design of cities a must read even today. In the book, Jacob s states that she has identified four criteria which must be present in an urbanized environment for it to be place which will naturally promote a self sustaining, and resilient socioeconomic character. The set of the four criteria can be used a framework and a tool that will aid the planning process of the new urbanism. The wave of change to be more sustainable is gaining some steam at present in Phoenix. Which is a relatively large (7 million people) in the metropolitan area which is located in the southwest United states. The City of Phoenix is my employer and where I currently reside. Therefore, it must be said, that my conclusion s may have some element of bias in them even though I will make a very concerted effort to avoid it. I expect that my evaluation of the presence or absence of the four criteria will provide a point of reference which can be used to predict the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Taking a Look at Rosemary Rosemary has been used for centuries as a pain reliever and cooking supplement. But through time rosemary has been not only a name, but adapted to modern day medicine. Rosemary may even be the future aid to slow the progression of Alzheimer s disease. It could be the medicine of the future. Rosemary, or Rosmarinus officinalis, was originally grown in the Mediterranean. However, there are many recordings of rosemary in Egypt where they buried their dead with rosemary on their graves or in their tombs. Rosemary was also mentioned in Shakespeare, in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet wore rosemary throughout the entire story to foreshadow her death. And in Anzac day in Australia citizens are expected to wear rosemary in honor of their dead ancestors (2014 Monterey Bay Spice Company). Aside from rosemary s obvious symbolism for death it also symbolizes memory. Shakespeare mentioned rosemary once again in Hamlet, but this time speaking of it out of an aid for remembrance. In Latin rosemary is Ros Maris, which means dew of the sea because of its growth near water and in Spain it is called Romero. The reasoning behind rosemary s name is because if the story once told about a Mediterranean woman who, in hopes to hide her baby from King Herod, hid under a rosemary bush when she attempted to flee to Egypt. The woman s name was Mary and rosemary was considered a rose bush. In the Middle Ages rosemary was also burnt in the homes of many because of its foretold ability to ward ... • 46. Enlightenment Influence On The French Revolution The French Revolution was a period of far reaching social and political change in France that lasted from 1789 to 1799. Before the revolution there was a period of time called the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was a philosophical movement in which followers considered that human reason brought a move from theory to practice and criticism to reforming education, household administration, social reactions and politics. Voltaire, a French philosopher and contributor to the Age of Enlightenment, expressed these ideas utilizing his intelligence, wit and style to mark his name as one of France s greatest writers. The Enlightenment influenced the French Revolution to a great extent by introducing new ideas that encouraged questioning of authority and religion, advancing people s outlook on commodities, and forcing citizens to compare their need with the Republic s needs. This further brought an uprising of people wanting more such as equality and civil rights. In the process to do so there were 250,000 casualties in the Reign of Terror followed the Thermidorian Reaction which implemented an oligarchy government called the Directory. Royalist riots prompted the Coup d etat of Fructidor which brought Napoleon into Directory which he later overthrows and creates an Authoritarian Republic. • 48. Family Therapy Using Adler s Early Recollection Family therapy using Adler s early recollection technique has been shown to be beneficial when working with a child with RAD for example, (Steinhart et.al, 2012). Specific early memories are explored due to their influence on what a person believes and how they therefore behave (Steinhart et.al, 2012). Whilst T s memories could be an area of focus in treatment due to his reoccurring nightmares, due to T s age and the potential potency of these experiences, a more gradual exposure to his trauma would be advised. Gradual exposure can help maltreated children gain mastery over trauma reminders, (Cohen et al, 2012). Additionally, as this approach lacks caregiver focus, it would not be recommended in this case. Play therapy has been shown to be a particularly effective treatment with foster care families, Steinhart et al. Therapeutic play can provide a sense of security and can offer the child a way to communicate in which they are comfortable, Ayling and Stringer, 2013). Importantly, playing with an adult can build neurological structure for children and promote adaptability in our brains, (Ayling and Stringer, 2013, (Perry, 2002) 2009) 131. Difficult emotions and experiences combined with pleasurable activities are explored in an environment where a child can learn how to trust in the company of a safe and caring adult Ayling and Stringer, 2013. • 50. Refrigeration Systems That Use Environment Friendly... Refrigeration systems that use environment friendly refrigerants provide a sustainability advantage when compared to other refrigerant selections. However, the energy use associated with refrigeration system operation and the environmental impacts associated with its generation and distribution often outweigh the choice of refrigerant. To minimize environmental impacts associated with refrigeration system operation, it is reasonable to evaluate the prospects of a clean source of energy. Research has demonstrated that solar energy is an ideal source for low temperature heating applications such as space and domestic hot water heating. From a sustainability perspective, directly using solar as a primary energy source is attractive because of its universal availability, low environmental impact, and low or no ongoing fuel cost. Research has demonstrated that solar energy is an ideal source for lowtemperature heating applications such as space and domestic hot water heating. Solar heating applications are intuitive since, when solar energy is absorbed on a surface, the surface temperature rises, providing a heating potential. The use of solar energy to provide refrigeration is less intuitive. In this article, we review three approaches that use solar energy to provide refrigeration at temperatures below 0°C (32°F). In addition to reviewing the potential technologies, we compare their operating characteristics. We conclude that only one of the three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. The Arts and Crafts Movement Essay The Arts and Craft movement was a social and artistic movement, which began in Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century and continued into the twentieth spreading to continental Europe and the USA. Its adherents artists, architects, designers and Craftsmen sought to reassert the importance of and craftsmanship in all arts in the face of increasing industrialization, which they felt was sacrificing quality in the pursuit of quantity. Its supporters and practioners were united not so much by a style rather than the common goal a desire to break down the hierarchy of the arts and to revive traditional handicrafts and make art that could be affordable to all. The leading exponent and propagandist of the movement was the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This satisfaction, the proponents of this movement felt, was totally denied in the industrialised processes inherent in compartmentalised machine production. In the United States, the Arts and Crafts Movement took on a distinctively more bourgeois flavor. While the European movement tried to recreate the virtuous world of craft labor that was being destroyed by industrialization, Americans tried to establish a new source of virtue to replace heroic craft production: the tasteful middle class home. They thought that the simple but refined aesthetics of Arts and Crafts decorative arts would ennoble the new experience of industrial consumerism, making individuals more rational and society more harmonious. In short, the American Arts and Crafts Movement was the aesthetic counterpart of its contemporary political movement: Progressivism. Art Nouveau, 1890 1914, explores a new style in the visual arts and architecture that developed in Europe and North America at the end of the nineteenth century. The exhibition is divided into three sections: the first focuses on the 1900 World s Fair in Paris, where Art Nouveau was established as the first new decorative style of the twentieth century; the second examines the sources that influenced the style; and the third looks at its development and fruition in major cities in Europe and North ...
