Northern Baggers Research Paper
Prosperity Against All Odds The Civil War was a turning point in American history in that it
completely change the dynamics of the economy across the Union. Although many Americans had to
change due to the loss of slavery and the destruction of the Southern economy, those who had to adjust
the most were the newly freed slaves under the 13th Amendment. The new freemen now had the
opportunity, and the challenges involved, of achieving the American Dream of economic freedom with
the help of the Freedmen s Bureau, Northern Carpetbaggers, and intellectuals such as Paulo Freire,
who felt it was their responsibility to help the freed blacks in their journey to economic prosperity.

Under Edmund J. Davis, the governor of Texas during Reconstruction, tried his best to weed out
corruption under his administration but men like Adjutant General Davidson defrauded the state of
more than $37,000 by issuing fraudulent warrants, and fled the state in 1872 (Moneyhon). Very few
instances during Reconstruction do carpetbaggers exercise political corruption and cash in on the
economic turmoil of the Southern economy. Many of the officials appointed over the South during
Reconstruction had it in their best interest to create a stronger Southern economy so the Union could
truly be united again. Even before Edmund J. Davis, Governor E.M. Pease urged the Constitutional
Convention of 1868 1869 to accept radical reconstruction so that Texas could normalize relations with
the Union as soon as possible (Texas State Library and Archives Commission). Unlike the usual view
of carpetbaggers as being corrupt and horrible human beings who wanted to destroy the South for
their own gain, Pease saw it in the best interest for Texas to join the Union as fast as possible. The
faster Texas accepted its punishment and joined the South the faster it can recover economically. Both
Edmund J. Davis and E.M. Pease, carpetbaggers from the North, didn t take advantage of black vote
or suppress the whites, but wanted a more prosperous life both whites

What Is The Theme Of Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
Kelly Funez ENGL 2322 50281 Jon Anderson 17 November 2015 Analysis of Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets The story of Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets by J.K. Rowling, Rowling
is showing us that there will be a racial issue everywhere no matter who you are as a person. The story
suggests that within the Hogwarts there is a race issue, for example when Draco calls Hermione a
filthy little mud blood (Rowling 112). Sadly the story does point out the race issue with the beast of
Salazar Slytherin and that all of Slytherin house is extremely racist towards other wizards. The story
also argues that coming together no matter your differences can help you in the long run. Hogwarts is
one Harry s few interactions with other people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of these wizards was the great Salazar Slytherin, who was said to have been very prejudice
against any non pureblood students who entered Hogwarts. When he left the school left an apparent
chamber of secrets which was supposed to have a very deadly beast and that when his heir returns it
will seek revenge on the enemies of Slytherin. This cause some very large racial suggestions since the
heir is Lord Voldemort and Slytherin hoped that one day the heir of Slytherin would come and fulfill
his wishes, murdering all the impure wizards at the school (vick_hpfan) but in the story we learn that
the heir of Slytherin is in fact a half blood causing conflict within his own lineage. The racism is even
farther showed when the beast of the chamber, the basilisk is set out by Tom Riddle who at the time is
controlling Ginny is attacking only muggle born wizarding students and as discovered by Harry killed
a muggle born student the first time that the Chamber of Secrets was opened 50 years earlier by the
real Tom Riddle when he was a student at Hogwarts. Also most of Slytherin house is pure blood with
Draco being the ideal Slytherin vicious, treacherous, and deceitful racist who enjoys inflicting misery
on others (Berman 2008) A very key thing in all of this is that an idea Slytherin is that being a racist is
a good thing here because on

Pregnancy Discrimination Act Case Study
According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, The Pregnancy Discrimination
Act (PDA) is an amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Discrimination on the basis
of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions constitutes unlawful sex discrimination under
Title VII (Eeoc.gov, 2015). In 2008, this act was not obeyed in the Young v. United Parcel Service,
Inc. case. Plaintiff Peggy Young, a dedicated UPS truck driver, filed for discrimination under the
Pregnancy Discrimination Act after her manger had put her on unpaid leave while she was pregnant.
Prior to her leave, she had expressed to her manager she was instructed not to lift any heavy packages,
over 20 pounds, from there on out for obvious safety reasons. UPS also told Young that her pregnancy
did not qualify her for the light duty work the company assigned other employees in the past;
employees with disabilities, injured on the job, and individuals who had lost their driving certification.

UPS argued that their prior employee accommodations, such as those injured on the job, all fell under
the company s policy. Young s case stirred up substantial controversy and has attracted several
supporters such as the U.S. government, women s rights groups, anti abortion organizations, and
workers advocates. Yet with all her support, Young still had lost two previous rulings in her case
against UPS. In February 2011, a district court decided that UPS s decision not to accommodate
Young was gender neutral (Zillman, 2015). This was a major implication during Young s extended

The Female Gaze in Art History
Thesis: Women have come a long way alongside men in presenting art in various forms, but while
artistic expression has been based from the male perspective and sexuality, female artists are
becoming more outspoken in their art forms challenging viewers to look beyond the physical form and
go deeper into its meaning. Down through the historical years of art the human body has been the
subject of intrigue and delight. While the display of the nude body has always bought about
controversy for one reason or another, the controversy is only as it applies to the female nude. Not too
much is ever focused on the nude body part of men, but female nudity causes quite the stir, especially
from male viewers. As I delve into this art form of female gaze, it might be helpful to take a look at
the male gaze as it applies to substantiating the female gaze. The notion of the male gaze has both a
literal and a figurative component. Literally the gaze is male when it involves looks from the male
species as a spectator or a participant in the work itself. Figuratively the male gaze is often involving a
female as the object. In Laura Mulvey s words, man is the bearer of the gaze, woman its object. Laura
Mulvey, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema (1975). An underprivileged object I might add. In my
opinion male and female gaze is not just about the features within artistry, but

Applying Students A Chance Into Admissions
College essays exist to allow hopeful, applying students a chance into admissions. This chance gives
them the opportunity to express who they are, and their reasons for wanting to attend that specific
college. In these essays, a student would communicate their reasons for wanting to attend the college,
and certain qualities they could bring to positively support the school. Essay questions such as why
that school would benefit the student, how that student has shown abilities in areas such as academics,
and community involvement. I hope to attend, and therefor am applying to the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. This school has proved to properly fit my needs in that it offers a Master s in
Library Science (MLS), is located in North Carolina, and reasonably fits my financial range. I believe
I can benefit this school, and this school can benefit me. I also believe that qualities I contain are
worthy of supporting this University. A few characteristic I contain that will positively influence the
college are my tireless work ethic, my compassion/concern for the University as well as the
community, and lastly my determination to complete tasks well and correctly, which has been instilled
in me from birth.
Every college needs students, students that will work and prove themselves worthy of the University.
There is a standard on GPA averages at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I currently

The Negro And The Racial Mountain
Langston Hughes was an African American poet, social activist, novelist, and playwright. His works
are still studies, read, and, in terms of his poems and plays, performed. He is best known for being a
leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Within his works, he depicted black America in manners that told
the truth about the culture, music, and language of his people. Besides his many notable poems, plays,
and novels, Hughes also wrote essays such as The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain which
Hughes gives insight into the minds of middle class and upper class Negroes. Prior to reading this
essay, I never heard of, nor did I know, Langston Hughes composed essays, much less an essay that
outwardly depicts aspects of life that most are accustomed to and see nothing wrong with. The Negro
and the Racial Mountain formulated this view that Langston Hughes was more than a poet who wrote
about jazz music as he is depicted within grade school textbooks, but instead, a man who had a great
passion for the African American race to develop a love for themselves and for non African American
audiences to begin to understand how the African American race can be strong and creative despite
struggles that may be occur. There is a possibility that this essay, The Negro Artist and the Racial
Mountain, is not more commonly known because it has the ability to make the reader uncomfortable,
no matter if he is an African American or white. For the African American, one can find himself

The Case for Contamination by Kwame Anthony Appiah
Being raised in Ghana, receiving higher education in England and working as a professor in the
United States certainly helped Kwame Anthony Appiah receive a fair share of different cultures.
Appiah is a recognized philosopher with several published books and an impressive track record of
accomplishments. His article The Case for Contamination, which was published in The New York
Times, speaks of the topic of how globalization affects individuals in many aspects of their life. He
discusses how forcefully preserving cultures can harm a culture more than help it. While the article is
lengthy, it goes into great detail about how globalization affects people in countries all over the world,
even Ghana. Globalization makes a large impact on the world we see today and cultural groups can
benefit from the effects of globalization because it promotes diversity, creates cosmopolitan citizen
development, and allows economic growth. Think of the term globalization . Your first thought may
be of people from all corners of the Earth exchanging ideas, views, products, and so much more.
Appiah introduces his article by describing a scene of a traditional Wednesday festival in the town of
Kumasi. He allows the reader to visualize the traditions held by those in attendance but begins his case
by providing details of men on their cellphones and holding conversations on contemporary topics
such as H.I.V/AIDS. When Appiah speaks of contamination, he highlights the way one culture is

Pathos And Imagery In Truman Capote s In Cold Blood
As Truman Capote guides his readers through the thrilling story of the homicide of the Clutters family
in his nonfiction novel, In Cold Blood, he gives the them a clear conception of the characters in his
story. The characterization of Dick Hickock and Perry Smith, the two vicious killers, enhances the
richness of the story by adding depth to the characters. Capote manipulates ethos and visual imagery
to illustrate Dick s corrupt nature, while he skillfully exploits assumption and pathos to characterize
Perry as a sympathetic character. Capote uses ethos and visual imagery to present Dick Hickock as a
man of corrupt values. Dick s nefarious ideals contradicts with the readers ethos as he tried to seduce
the little girl on the beach. Dick, when stating his attitude towards seducing minors, says that other
people might not think it normal. [Although] that, to be sure, was something, he was certain he was a
normal . The fact that Dick has no guilt for raping minors for eight or nine times shows how Dick s
values are rotten. He even states that real men had the same desire he had to justify his sinful, secret
passion for pedophilia. In fact, Dick is well aware that pedophilia is a crime that the society frowns
upon; yet, he chooses to ignore the standards of society in pursuit of his own pleasure and desire. By
justifying himself with a broad claim that all men are passionate for pedophilia, he disproves the
audience, to whom pedophilia is interpreted as an

Elements Of A Short Story
Short stories can be bland and boring. As you read some of them, you can feel emotion or just read a
boring story about how something changed their life, but these three stories are interesting because
they develop horror. These short stories use different elements to create horror. The Tell Tale Heart, A
Rose for Emily, , and The Lottery develop horror/gothic elements.
First, The Tell Tale Heart develops horror by having an unreliable crazy narrator. For example, we see
his psyche in the introduction of Edgar Allan Poe s short story. I heard all things in the heaven and
earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? (par. 1). This gives the audience the insight
into the narrator s mind; therefore, the narrator has some sort of schizophrenia that causes him to not
hear, think, or behave correctly. As the narrator talks to the reader he thinks he is not crazy and that his
thoughts are normal. Next, the short story is written in first person point of view which makes the
story way more interesting and you see how mad this character is. I grew furious as I gazed upon it
(par. 9). In first person point of view the reader can almost imagine the whole situation as the narrator
is in the old man s room looking at his vulture eye. Plus, the narrator killing the old man was
premeditated, and that the narrator was in the man s house to murder him due to his mental health
issues. The psycho narrator in The Tell Tale Heart develops horror in this short story.

Shakespeare s Motivation In Hamlet
Known for the immense amount of unanswered questions and mysteries, Shakespeare s play Hamlet
has led to many discussions regarding the true feelings of Hamlet and his motivations for revenge.
Tormented by the death of his father and the marriage of his mother to his uncle Claudius, Hamlet
must struggle through the betrayal while seeking the truth of what occurred. No matter how many
times Hamlet s actions have been analyzed, no one conclusion can be made as to why Hamlet makes
the choices he does. This unfortunately has left the character of Hamlet unexplainable to readers.
Many scholars are adamant in their belief of Hamlet having an Oedipus complex based on the fact that
Hamlet seems reluctant to take revenge on his uncle; however, when ... Show more content on

However, while it is true that Hamlet did not act swiftly or rashly, it does seem that he was more
thoughtful and careful in his plot against Claudius. According to Oscar J. Campbell, Hamlet is a manic
depressive, who vacillates between violent action and brooding inaction (Reed 178). This can be
proven by the juxtaposed actions of Hamlet. In the beginning of the play, the reader sees Hamlet as a
melancholic young man mourning the death of his father, but by the end the reader is presented with a
nonsensical Hamlet that gains his revenge ruthlessly. Also, Hamlet exemplifies this statement by

Jack Kevorkian and Euthanasia
Euthanasia The thin line between life and death has become an ethical issue many health care
providers and the government have long tried to ignore. The understanding that life begins at birth,
and ends when the heartbeat and breathing have ceased has long been deemed factual. Medical
technologies have changed this with respirators, artificial defibrillators, and transplants (Macionis,
2009). Thus medical and legal experts in the United States define death as an irreversible state
involving no response to stimulation, no movement or breathing, no reflexes, and no indication of
brain activity (Macionis, 2009, p. 436). The process of deciding when a terminally ill patient should
die lies within the patient, family members, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was hardly doing it right as Dr. Kevorkian likes to believe. (The New York Times, 2007, para.6)
By contrast, Oregon being the only law allowing terminally ill adults to request a lethal dose of drugs
from a physician requires two physicians to agree the patient is of sound mind and has less than six
months to live. California is in the works of voting on a similarly careful measure. One of its sponsors
cites Dr. Kevorkian as the perfect reason we need this law in California. We don t want there to be

that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. A
social function is the consequences of a social pattern for the operation of society as a whole. Types of
social functions are manifest function, latent function and dysfunctions. Manifest function is the
recognized and intended consequences of any social pattern. Latent function is the unrecognized and
unintended consequences of any social pattern. Dysfunctions are any social pattern that may disrupt
the operation of society (Macionis, 2009). Kevorkian s situation

Zombie Apocalypse Effect
Zombie apocalypse films are traditionally set in a post cataclysmic event that has left world wide
destruction and change. The zombies are usually portrayed as cannibalistic monsters, who scavenge
the remaining earth looking for food. Possible causes for zombie behavior in a modern population can
be attributed to viruses, bacteria or other phenomena that reduce the mental capacity of humans
causing them to behave in a very primitive and destructive fashion. Humans have to survive and
prosper, with the mayhem of trying not to be eaten everyday, while trying to establish a sense of
government and order. This causes conflict between the protagonist and the zombies which is usually
resolved by finding a cure. These films, due to their complex storylines, interesting characters, and
possible world altering implications, have attracted large crowds at the theaters for many years.
To begin, the protagonist in the story is usually a man afflicted by the lost of his family ... Show more

The Fade To Black ending could result in the protagonist s death and likely an unhappy crowd of
moviegoers. The Victory ending happens when civilization has found a cure of simply bombed the
zombie hoard into extinction. This is a crowd favorite because the hero, they have grown close to, gets
to live on his life with his new group of friends or family. The last ending is co existence, zombies and
humans live separately and there is no conflict for the protagonist.
To conclude, zombie apocalypse films have captured audiences attention for many years and years to
come. Their exhilarating story lines, unique comedy, and respect for the world we
know draws people to them. The setting changes across the globe, while the people and the zombies
all follow the same foundation. The world could come to an end or humans can battle back and restore

The Slave Trade gave power to many and found support from influential people, leaving those who
did oppose the immorality of the operations terrified of the repercussions of speaking out against it.
Lives were shaped by the slave trade; countless groups of people were growing prosperous and

planters, and political leaders, who, in ruffles and finery, sat in the American Continental Congress

The War Powers Resolution Of 1973
Who has the power to go to war? Most people would say the President while others would say
Congress. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 may shine some light on who or whom can declare
war. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 also know simple as the War Powers Act states the President
must notify Congress within a 48 hour time frame that he is sending troops into military combat. The
act does not allow military solders from remaining in a state of conflict for more than 60 days. After
60 days the President must ask Congress again for authorization. The act was made to restrain the
President strength to send U.S. military overseas by requiring the executive branch to discuss with
Congress before involving U.S. troops in overseas combat. Before the Wars Power Act the
Constitution was used to see who could declare war however it was contradictory. In Article I of The
Constitution the power to declare war as well as have the power to raise an army and navy, and fund
war efforts was given to Congress however in Article III of The Constitution the President is named
Commander In Chief of the armed forces. It is meant to control the Presidents power over the U.S.
armed forces because it requires him to have Congress consent. The War Powers Act was also made to

Examples Of Human Nature In The Old Man And The Sea
Nature is a captivating world, suffused with beauty and simplicity. However, it s power and animation
are belittled. Although all lives are significant and meaningful, we are in constant danger and are
drastically affected by our surroundings. Similarly, in the The Old Man and the Sea, written by Ernest
Hemingway, Santiago, a Cuban fisherman, ventures through the Gulf Stream to find the catch of his
life. Santiago muses, Everything kills something else in some way. As human beings, we are a vital

very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends (54). His love and respect for the fish is
masked underneath his duties as a fisherman, but his worries and sorrows for the marlin is further

Analysis Of George Orwell s Narrator In Shooting An Elephant
Fitting In: Orwell s Narrator in Shooting an Elephant
Since the publication of George Orwell s, Shooting an Elephant in 1936 many philosophers have
engaged in conversation about humanity, violence, politics, power, dominance, race, culture and
principles. Orwell was in fact a genius plain and simple, though in a very complicated way (Firchow
94). George Orwell brings you into his essay with lucid and vivid details the entire way starting from
the setting, I remember that it was a cloudy, stuffy morning at the beginning of the rains, (25) to the
characters attitudes towards one another, if a European woman went through the bazaars alone
somebody would probably spit betel juice over her dress (23). The essay starts with the narrator,
whom we assume is Orwell, a white man working as a sub divisional police officer in Moulmein,
Burma where the British have a colonized. Being English, the narrator Orwell is hated by many of the
natives, When a nimble Burman tripped me up on the football field and the referee (another Burman)
looked the other way, the crowd yelled with hideous laughter (Orwell 23). One morning, Orwell
receives a call about an elephant ram sacking the town and even killing a native Burman. Ultimately
forcing Orwell into a dilemma of his own morality of what he ought to do and trying not to let down
the immense crowd of yellow faces (26). Orwell shoots the elephant essentially killing him. The

Detection of Biological Molecules
Detection of Biological Molecules
Introduction: Without carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen and phosphorus, life wouldn t exist.
These are the most abundant elements in living organisms.
These elements are held together by covalent bonds, ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds, and disulfide
bonds. Covalent bonds are especially strong, thus, are present in monomers, the building blocks of
life. These monomers combine to make polymers, which is a long chain of monomers strung together.
Biological molecules can be distinguished by their functional groups. For example, an amino group is
present in amino acids, and a carboxyl group can always be found in fatty acids.

The Path Between the Seas Book Report Essay
Lulu Stevens HST 143 Dr. Quirk 10/26/14 The Path Between the Seas By: David Mccullough David
McCullough s The Path Between Seas was printed in New York City, New York in the year 1977. The
events regarding the Panama Canal as discussed in David McCullough s The Path Between Seas
allowed an impressive assertion of American power the likes of which had never before been
displayed. In it s rich history, this novel offers recollections of failure on France s part, American
strength overcoming Columbian resistance, and triumphant success of medical care and engineering.

As it would turn out, the French didn t exactly accomplish what they had hoped. A major loss in funds
due to gross misuse and bribery and large casualties rendered the project a total bust. Many of the
early deaths were of the brightest engineering graduates of the time. Exaggerated claims of false
progress kept the money flowing into the project, but before long the fraud was exposed. Only two
fifths of the canal had been dug after the French spent 2 years longer than they d intended digging. De

a measly $40 million. America unlike their predecessors in the task would learn from prior mistakes

Surcharge Essay
The process is done by simply placing a surcharge fill on top of the soil that requires consolidation.
The excess load is referred to as surcharge load. The load must be placed in several stages so as to
prevent instability. Once the predicted consolidation is achieved, the fill can be removed and
construction can be started. Surcharge which was installed as a temporary load, can be removed when
the settlements exceed the foretold final settlement. Normally this is done only after the remaining
excess pore water pressure becomes less than the stress increase caused by the temporary surcharge. If
the surcharge is higher than the work load, the soil will always be in an over consolidated state.
The secondary compression for over consolidated soil is much smaller than that of normally
consolidated soil. The secondary settlement can be reduced or even eliminated either by increasing the
time of temporary overloading or by using a heavier overload.
Advantages of preloading:
Equipment cost is less since only conventional earthmoving equipment is needed.
Any contractor can perform the work, as specialized knowledge in not required.

Exchanging a Breast Implant
Dr. Naidu can exchange one or both of a patient s breast implants in order to:
provide her with breasts that appear more symmetrical (even); replace a ruptured/deflated breast
implant; reduce or increase the size of a breast implant; or improve the overall results of an
unsatisfactory breast augmentation.
Addressing Issues with the Capsule
The capsule is the scar tissue that forms around the breast implant: Formation of scar tissue occurs
around any prosthetic implant. This formation of scar tissue is the body s way of protecting itself from
a foreign object.
A Capsulotomy Dr. Naidu can address capsular contracture and breasts that sit too high on the chest
by creating an incision in the capsule that surrounds the implant(s). A Capsulectomy This procedure is
necessary when a capsule calcifies (hardens). During this procedure, Dr. Naidu removes the entire
capsule.
Other Issues Addressed with a Breast Augmentation Revision in Manhattan
A Pocket Adjustment Dr. Naidu uses this procedure to address ptosis/bottoming out. Typically, this
procedure is performed with a Capsulotomy (to tighten the pocket; thus, preventing further sagging).
Areolae Reduction During this procedure, Dr. Naidu reduces the size of the patient s areolae (the
pigmented skin that surrounds the nipples). A Mastopexy Dr. Naidu uses this

The Building Of Cultures By R. B. Dixon
Similarly, The Building of Cultures (by R. B. Dixon in 1928) began with the lengthy dispute regarding
how one explained alike cultural traits occurring in geographically separate areas (1928, Dixon: 33;
also 182s). It could not be denied that every cultural quality was discovered or invented first. There
was always necessarily a beginning, a first for all. (1928, Dixon: 35). In the chapter Discovery and
Invention , he takes note to separate creation and discovery (conception) according to purpose ,
suggesting the two occur as a sequence: (accidental) conception, then (purposeful) creation. He then
goes on to discuss the factors of each in detail. Conception is made up of identification, opportunity,
and imagination that is appreciated. Invention is either directional or accidental, distinguished as being
an improvement or entirely new(He borrows from the sociologists H. S. Harrison and L. Bernard).
The responsible factors were available knowledge, needs, opportunity, and genius.
Finally, he goes on to discuss diffusion, step three in his sequence: Conceptualization creation
dispersal. In this model, individuals discover or invent and the process is unproductive and without
result until others adopt it . Without duplicating beyond the inventor or discoverer, the new quality
remains personal, an eccentricity, intriguing or entertaining, but not of great importance (1928, Dixon:
59).

The First Invention Of Radiology
The first invention of radiology began with the creation of X rays in 1895 when Wilhelm Roentgen, a
50 year old professor of physics at Germany s University of Wurzburg, made a discovery that would
in a very short time change medical and human history. Though, discovered by accident, Roentgen s
discovery would help detect tumors, broken bones and bullets buried within bodies, never before seen
with the naked eye. Since the invention of X rays, there had been numerous discoveries of similar
inventions, from image intensifier to ultrasound to magnetic resonance imaging. Without these
inventions, humans would not have been able to see the inner workings of the body or detect key
information in modern times that allow us to prevent serious illnesses where other inventions proved
useless since imaging plays a huge role in diagnosis. In current society, radiology s first creation has
been exposed to most citizens, whether it is to detect a broken bone at the doctor s or to determine a
person s risk of getting cavities at the dentist s. Although, inventions from radiology does hold risks of
radiation exposure amongst its patients, the benefits of them greatly outweighs its risks.
Before the development and research of radiology, life was simplistic with little knowledge of
observing the internal organs of a person. If a patient was shot, doctors had to, literally, poke around
their patient s organs with their fingers or use electrical induction machine to send sound waves

Cell Phone Radiation On Human Brain
The objective of this research is to study the effect of cell phone radiation on human brain. It is known
that the cell phone produces electromagnetic radiation which could be harmful to the human brain.
When the phone is placed 5 cm away from the head there is less brain activity compared to when the
cell phone is placed next to the ear or head on either side. Special attention is focused on Temporal
and Frontal lobes as these are very close to the ear, which is call the electromagnetic radiation. The
Electromagnetic radiation is measured in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR). SAR is measured
for two common holding positions of mobile phone: Cheek and Tilt. In tilt position, the mobile phone
tilted for 15° and 30° from a person s head. The SAR measured in the Cheek position has much lower
values than of tilt position.
The brain is one of the most important organs of the body that coordinates all the activities. It is
divided into three major parts namely: Cerebrum, Cerebellum, brain stem and diencephalon.
Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It covers the diencephalon and is divided into right and left
hemisphere longitudinally. Each hemisphere is subdivided into brain lobes, named as: Frontal lobe,
Parietal lobe, Temporal lobe and Occipital lobe.
The effect of SAR majority depends on the antenna position on the mobile phone. A mobile phone
with mounted antenna on top and hold in tilt position results in more absorption of EM radiation by
the head. This happens as the antenna is closer proximity to the head. Moreover, SAR values change
with variation of holding position of mobile phone. Cheek and tilt are two prevalent ways of holding a
mobile phone. The electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the
International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly hazardous to humans [1]. The radio
frequency used for communication can penetrate through semi solid substances, such as living tissue
with a distance proportional to its power density. Research has demonstrated that the short term effect
of EM waves on the human brain [2]. However, the evidence supporting the research is very little for
any kind of short or long term effect.

Dave Chappell s Filter Analysis
Le Azia Best Robinson
Professor Laura McCalla
English 2060
21 April 2015 Where the Hell is Dave Chappell s Filter? Comedy for many people translates as being
pure entertainment, which provides many laughs; however the reality is that while it has many surface
pleasures it also holds many interior truths. Focusing in on the framework of comedy this paper will
concentrate on the underlying discourse of this craft that has mastered the art of pushing social
boundaries in a way its listener can receive its unrestricted reality without a great deal of objection. In
some cases comedians are solely responsible for determining the content of their acts, and ultimately

glorifies Chappell s exaggerated use of satire, but basically mocks many of the racist stereotypes
associated with black people. As with many things of this nature, everyone didn t receive this humor
in the way intended, ultimately bringing light to the delicacy surrounding satire when it applies to
race. Although another intriguing spectrum of this use of satire is apparent when looking at how this
skit alongside this overall show in question factored heavily into prolonged consequences. This show
treaded a thin line that the dynamic of race based comedy treads with the ability it has in creating
awareness with the risk of actually being a way in which to reinforce as well. This as Dave Chappell
so boldly and accurately put it in his Oprah Winfrey interview was an action of being socially
irresponsible , which inevitably troubled the young comedian, resulting in his decision to walk away
from the show. The reality remains that where it was intended for these skits to be of a completely
satirical stance, they inevitably became for some viewers an opportunity to indulge in racist

Jackie And Me Character Traits
After reading Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman, I have learned that Joe Stoshack is a dynamic character.
At the beginning of the book, Joe is misbehaving; eventually, Joe becomes thoughtful, and then very
self controlled.. These character traits were observed through Joe s actions, dialogue, relationships,
choices, and problems. In the first chapters I have learned that Joe was dishonest and through his
action and choices and this tells me this character cannot be trusted. One reason why Joe is dishonest,
is that Joe told Mrs. Robinson (Jackie s wife) and other people that he wasn t a time traveler even
thought Joe was. Another reason is that when Joe got back from the journey Joe didn t tell his teacher
that he went back in time Joe said he found it from the baseball cards and lied when he should have
been honest although he didn t want people to know. The last reason why Joe is dishonest, is when Joe
came back from the first time that he didn t tell his mom that he got chased down from the cops. ...

Satan s Pity in Paradise Lost
O Hell! Satan s opening exclamation of frustration immediately alerts readers to Satan s state of mind.
As Satan gazes on Adam and Eve, he is struck by their blissful state, which sends him into a spiral of
confusion as he slightly reconsiders his plan to destroy them. To himself, Satan addresses the pair; he
begins regretful and with pity for Adam and Eve. He later shifts in tone to vengeful, envious, and
angry. Further exemplifying Satan s contrasting attitudes, Milton uses antonymous words of emotion
throughout the passage. By the end of passage, Milton solidifies Satan s hardening of heart and ends
the struggle that has been festering inside Satan since his first act of rebellion against God. Milton
successfully uses both the shift in tone and the emotional diction to reveal Satan s stormy internal
conflict.
Throughout the passage, Milton inserts beautifully emotional words that describe Satan s contrasting
feelings: grief and joy, woe and bliss, loathing and delight. The positive feelings that Satan expresses,
though describing Adam and Eve s state, reflect the good nature in Satan. That nature is visibly small,
as Satan describes himself as joyful or blissful. He merely observes this happiness in Adam and Eve;
he even speaks the words with hints of regret. The negative words have a much more powerful effect:
Satan uses these words to describe his own feelings and his own domain, Hell. The feelings of grief,
woe, and loathing are his, not Adam and Eve s, and thus

The primary function of upper airway is to exchange heat and moisture. The ISB (isothermic
saturation boundary) is the point that divides the airway by temperature which is constant below this
point and is variable during inhalation and exhalation above this point. The shifts of the ISB can
provide the proper heat and moisture in the upper airway to meet the needs in the lower airway.
Without providing the correct heat moisture exchange between the upper and lower airway can lead to
serious problems within the lungs. Humidification of dry medical gases which are administrated by
inhaling is very important to keep the lower airway in a normal physiology condition; therefore, the
proper heat and humidity helps maintain the normal function of the mucociliary transport system.
Humidity therapy is also used to manage hypothermia and treat bronchospasm caused by cold air.
Bland Aerosol Therapy involves the delivery of sterile water or saline aerosols by using large volume
jet nebulizers and ultrasonic nebulizers to treat upper airway edema, provide proper heat and humidity

Catholic Church Child Abuse Case Study
The Catholic Church has been aware of their issue of child abuse for several years. Research
conducted by John Jay College confirmed that sexual abuse of children is often ignored by the
Catholic Dioceses. Scholars revealed that between the years 1950 to 2000 most allegations accusing
priest of sexual abuse were reported directly to dioceses. Their response was to simply transfer the
accused to a new parish. This process highlighted the fact that several clergy members were aware of
internal issues, but also it obstructed any type of police investigation. In other words, the church
moved the accused and therefore they did not have to face any more scrutiny. As investigators
ultimately discovered in some cases clergy members took active steps to conceal the abuse and protect
their priests (Goldberg, 2013). After the Catholic Church practices were brought to light they received

Frank Herbert s Use Of The Spice In Dune
Theme In Dune, by Frank Herbert, everyone s life depends on the Melange, or the spice. The spice
was a drug that could not be reproduced and only found on the planet Arrakis. Frank Herbert shows in
Dune that there are products like the spice that large populations depends on. First, the Fremen on
Arrakis heavily depends on the spice. The spice is in their everyday food and materials. They use the
spice to make things such as spice paper, spice fibre, and chemical explosives. It is also in their food
and drinks. Paul eats the two leaf wrapped morsels into his hand. They reeked of spice (Herbert 282).
The people also drink spice coffee and spice beer (145). Since spice is so rare, it is also used as a
currency against the Guild. The Fremen use the spice to bribe the Guild to keep [their] skies clear of
satellites and such that none may spy what [they] do to the face of Arrakis. (283). Spice is also used
during the spice trance during the transfer of Reverend Mothers. For the Fremen, they would die if the
spice disappeared. Not only do they use it as parts of objects and consumables, it is also their currency.

According to a report by the National Parks Conservation Association, one challenge is Colorado
River management actions that do not incorporate adaptive strategies for protecting and restoring fish,
river flows, riverine habitats, cultural sites, and archaeological resources along the river corridor
NPCA, 3). Other problems include sounds cape management, such as over flights that can disturb
visitors, wildlife, and the 11 Native American tribes which live in the park (NPCA, 3). Greater and
better relationships with these tribes are also wanted. Mining activities from the past and present,
along with air pollution from nearby areas also pose threats to the health of the park. Due to
environmental change, the canyon even faces threats from non native animals intruding. According to
Anne Minard of the High Country News, drought has recently brought bison into the park. They were
originally taken into Arizona for an experiment to breed them with cattle, although that failed
(Minard). Biologists with the National Park Service say the huge animals (males can weigh up to
2,500 pounds) are wallowing in riparian areas and damaging cultural sites. They considered building a
fence, but that would affect other wildlife, such as mule deer (Minard). The NPCA also states that
there are front country and backcountry management and protection needs, particularly in regard to
the challenges of park size, visitation patterns, and shortfalls in funding,

Pleasant Ambient Odor
Effect of Pleasant Ambient Odor on Semantic Memory
Memory is a topic that has fascinated scientists throughout time. How it works, how it is influenced,
and how it can be improved are just a few of the many questions that have captured the attention of
researchers around the world. One notable area that has gained attention in the last few decades is the
Proust phenomenon, which is how odors can be especially powerful reminders of autobiographical
experience (Chu Downes, 2000). This proposal will be structured to explore if this phenomenon
extends from autobiographical memory to semantic memory.
The Proust phenomenon has been explored and supported by several researchers. For instance, Chu
and Downes (2002) found that odors are indeed especially potent as retrieval cues, to the extent that
they automatically induce the retrieval of unrelated and irrelevant detail in the incongruent odor
condition (p. 6). Additionally, Herz and Schooler (2002) and Castellanos, Hudson, Haviland Jones,

In one study, Smith, Nielson, Woodard, Seidenberg, and Verber (2011) found significant evidence that
physical activity improved semantic memory in participants with amnestic mild cognitive impairment
(aMCI). Another study of interest found that, while aging had a negative effect on autobiographical
and episodic memory, it did not affect semantic memory (St Laurent, Abdi, Burianová, Grady, 2011).
The most notable study, which researched the link between semantic memory and sensory modalities,
found evidence supporting that the organization of semantic memory corresponds to types of
information associated with sensory modalities (Marques, 2006). However, this study only focused on
this association in the conceptual sense, not the actual sensory input; for instance, one question,
structured like the others, asked if a dog can bark, bark being the sensory modality (Marques,

I Am A Math Lesson Essay

introducing a new topic on a Friday in an elementary classroom was not ideal as the majority of

  • 2. Northern Baggers Research Paper Prosperity Against All Odds The Civil War was a turning point in American history in that it completely change the dynamics of the economy across the Union. Although many Americans had to change due to the loss of slavery and the destruction of the Southern economy, those who had to adjust the most were the newly freed slaves under the 13th Amendment. The new freemen now had the opportunity, and the challenges involved, of achieving the American Dream of economic freedom with the help of the Freedmen s Bureau, Northern Carpetbaggers, and intellectuals such as Paulo Freire, who felt it was their responsibility to help the freed blacks in their journey to economic prosperity. Events leading to the and during Civil War largely impacted the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under Edmund J. Davis, the governor of Texas during Reconstruction, tried his best to weed out corruption under his administration but men like Adjutant General Davidson defrauded the state of more than $37,000 by issuing fraudulent warrants, and fled the state in 1872 (Moneyhon). Very few instances during Reconstruction do carpetbaggers exercise political corruption and cash in on the economic turmoil of the Southern economy. Many of the officials appointed over the South during Reconstruction had it in their best interest to create a stronger Southern economy so the Union could truly be united again. Even before Edmund J. Davis, Governor E.M. Pease urged the Constitutional Convention of 1868 1869 to accept radical reconstruction so that Texas could normalize relations with the Union as soon as possible (Texas State Library and Archives Commission). Unlike the usual view of carpetbaggers as being corrupt and horrible human beings who wanted to destroy the South for their own gain, Pease saw it in the best interest for Texas to join the Union as fast as possible. The faster Texas accepted its punishment and joined the South the faster it can recover economically. Both Edmund J. Davis and E.M. Pease, carpetbaggers from the North, didn t take advantage of black vote or suppress the whites, but wanted a more prosperous life both whites ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. What Is The Theme Of Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Kelly Funez ENGL 2322 50281 Jon Anderson 17 November 2015 Analysis of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets The story of Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets by J.K. Rowling, Rowling is showing us that there will be a racial issue everywhere no matter who you are as a person. The story suggests that within the Hogwarts there is a race issue, for example when Draco calls Hermione a filthy little mud blood (Rowling 112). Sadly the story does point out the race issue with the beast of Salazar Slytherin and that all of Slytherin house is extremely racist towards other wizards. The story also argues that coming together no matter your differences can help you in the long run. Hogwarts is one Harry s few interactions with other people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of these wizards was the great Salazar Slytherin, who was said to have been very prejudice against any non pureblood students who entered Hogwarts. When he left the school left an apparent chamber of secrets which was supposed to have a very deadly beast and that when his heir returns it will seek revenge on the enemies of Slytherin. This cause some very large racial suggestions since the heir is Lord Voldemort and Slytherin hoped that one day the heir of Slytherin would come and fulfill his wishes, murdering all the impure wizards at the school (vick_hpfan) but in the story we learn that the heir of Slytherin is in fact a half blood causing conflict within his own lineage. The racism is even farther showed when the beast of the chamber, the basilisk is set out by Tom Riddle who at the time is controlling Ginny is attacking only muggle born wizarding students and as discovered by Harry killed a muggle born student the first time that the Chamber of Secrets was opened 50 years earlier by the real Tom Riddle when he was a student at Hogwarts. Also most of Slytherin house is pure blood with Draco being the ideal Slytherin vicious, treacherous, and deceitful racist who enjoys inflicting misery on others (Berman 2008) A very key thing in all of this is that an idea Slytherin is that being a racist is a good thing here because on ... • 4. Pregnancy Discrimination Act Case Study According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) is an amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions constitutes unlawful sex discrimination under Title VII (Eeoc.gov, 2015). In 2008, this act was not obeyed in the Young v. United Parcel Service, Inc. case. Plaintiff Peggy Young, a dedicated UPS truck driver, filed for discrimination under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act after her manger had put her on unpaid leave while she was pregnant. Prior to her leave, she had expressed to her manager she was instructed not to lift any heavy packages, over 20 pounds, from there on out for obvious safety reasons. UPS also told Young that her pregnancy did not qualify her for the light duty work the company assigned other employees in the past; employees with disabilities, injured on the job, and individuals who had lost their driving certification. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... UPS argued that their prior employee accommodations, such as those injured on the job, all fell under the company s policy. Young s case stirred up substantial controversy and has attracted several supporters such as the U.S. government, women s rights groups, anti abortion organizations, and workers advocates. Yet with all her support, Young still had lost two previous rulings in her case against UPS. In February 2011, a district court decided that UPS s decision not to accommodate Young was gender neutral (Zillman, 2015). This was a major implication during Young s extended legal ... • 5. The Female Gaze Of Art History Paula St. Cyr Erin Farrell, M.A. adjunct ARTH 316 W1 December 10, 2016 The Female Gaze in Art History Thesis: Women have come a long way alongside men in presenting art in various forms, but while artistic expression has been based from the male perspective and sexuality, female artists are becoming more outspoken in their art forms challenging viewers to look beyond the physical form and go deeper into its meaning. Down through the historical years of art the human body has been the subject of intrigue and delight. While the display of the nude body has always bought about controversy for one reason or another, the controversy is only as it applies to the female nude. Not too much is ever focused on the nude body part of men, but female nudity causes quite the stir, especially from male viewers. As I delve into this art form of female gaze, it might be helpful to take a look at the male gaze as it applies to substantiating the female gaze. The notion of the male gaze has both a literal and a figurative component. Literally the gaze is male when it involves looks from the male species as a spectator or a participant in the work itself. Figuratively the male gaze is often involving a female as the object. In Laura Mulvey s words, man is the bearer of the gaze, woman its object. Laura Mulvey, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema (1975). An underprivileged object I might add. In my opinion male and female gaze is not just about the features within artistry, but ... • 7. The Negro And The Racial Mountain Langston Hughes was an African American poet, social activist, novelist, and playwright. His works are still studies, read, and, in terms of his poems and plays, performed. He is best known for being a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Within his works, he depicted black America in manners that told the truth about the culture, music, and language of his people. Besides his many notable poems, plays, and novels, Hughes also wrote essays such as The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain which Hughes gives insight into the minds of middle class and upper class Negroes. Prior to reading this essay, I never heard of, nor did I know, Langston Hughes composed essays, much less an essay that outwardly depicts aspects of life that most are accustomed to and see nothing wrong with. The Negro and the Racial Mountain formulated this view that Langston Hughes was more than a poet who wrote about jazz music as he is depicted within grade school textbooks, but instead, a man who had a great passion for the African American race to develop a love for themselves and for non African American audiences to begin to understand how the African American race can be strong and creative despite struggles that may be occur. There is a possibility that this essay, The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain, is not more commonly known because it has the ability to make the reader uncomfortable, no matter if he is an African American or white. • 8. The Case for Contamination by Kwame Anthony Appiah Being raised in Ghana, receiving higher education in England and working as a professor in the United States certainly helped Kwame Anthony Appiah receive a fair share of different cultures. Appiah is a recognized philosopher with several published books and an impressive track record of accomplishments. His article The Case for Contamination, which was published in The New York Times, speaks of the topic of how globalization affects individuals in many aspects of their life. He discusses how forcefully preserving cultures can harm a culture more than help it. While the article is lengthy, it goes into great detail about how globalization affects people in countries all over the world, even Ghana. Globalization makes a large impact on the world we see today and cultural groups can benefit from the effects of globalization because it promotes diversity, creates cosmopolitan citizen development, and allows economic growth. Think of the term globalization . Your first thought may be of people from all corners of the Earth exchanging ideas, views, products, and so much more. Appiah introduces his article by describing a scene of a traditional Wednesday festival in the town of Kumasi. He allows the reader to visualize the traditions held by those in attendance but begins his case by providing details of men on their cellphones and holding conversations on contemporary topics such as H.I.V/AIDS. • 9. Pathos And Imagery In Truman Capote s In Cold Blood As Truman Capote guides his readers through the thrilling story of the homicide of the Clutters family in his nonfiction novel, In Cold Blood, he gives the them a clear conception of the characters in his story. The characterization of Dick Hickock and Perry Smith, the two vicious killers, enhances the richness of the story by adding depth to the characters. Capote manipulates ethos and visual imagery to illustrate Dick s corrupt nature, while he skillfully exploits assumption and pathos to characterize Perry as a sympathetic character. Capote uses ethos and visual imagery to present Dick Hickock as a man of corrupt values. Dick s nefarious ideals contradicts with the readers ethos as he tried to seduce the little girl on the beach. Dick, when stating his attitude towards seducing minors, says that other people might not think it normal. [Although] that, to be sure, was something, he was certain he was a normal . The fact that Dick has no guilt for raping minors for eight or nine times shows how Dick s values are rotten. He even states that real men had the same desire he had to justify his sinful, secret passion for pedophilia. In fact, Dick is well aware that pedophilia is a crime that the society frowns upon; yet, he chooses to ignore the standards of society in pursuit of his own pleasure and desire. By justifying himself with a broad claim that all men are passionate for pedophilia, he disproves the audience, to whom pedophilia is interpreted as an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Elements Of A Short Story Short stories can be bland and boring. As you read some of them, you can feel emotion or just read a boring story about how something changed their life, but these three stories are interesting because they develop horror. These short stories use different elements to create horror. The Tell Tale Heart, A Rose for Emily, , and The Lottery develop horror/gothic elements. First, The Tell Tale Heart develops horror by having an unreliable crazy narrator. For example, we see his psyche in the introduction of Edgar Allan Poe s short story. I heard all things in the heaven and earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? (par. 1). This gives the audience the insight into the narrator s mind; therefore, the narrator has some sort of schizophrenia that causes him to not hear, think, or behave correctly. As the narrator talks to the reader he thinks he is not crazy and that his thoughts are normal. Next, the short story is written in first person point of view which makes the story way more interesting and you see how mad this character is. I grew furious as I gazed upon it (par. 9). In first person point of view the reader can almost imagine the whole situation as the narrator is in the old man s room looking at his vulture eye. Plus, the narrator killing the old man was premeditated, and that the narrator was in the man s house to murder him due to his mental health issues. The psycho narrator in The Tell Tale Heart develops horror in this short story. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Shakespeare s Motivation In Hamlet Known for the immense amount of unanswered questions and mysteries, Shakespeare s play Hamlet has led to many discussions regarding the true feelings of Hamlet and his motivations for revenge. Tormented by the death of his father and the marriage of his mother to his uncle Claudius, Hamlet must struggle through the betrayal while seeking the truth of what occurred. No matter how many times Hamlet s actions have been analyzed, no one conclusion can be made as to why Hamlet makes the choices he does. This unfortunately has left the character of Hamlet unexplainable to readers. Many scholars are adamant in their belief of Hamlet having an Oedipus complex based on the fact that Hamlet seems reluctant to take revenge on his uncle; however, when ... According to Oscar J. Campbell, Hamlet is a manic depressive, who vacillates between violent action and brooding inaction (Reed 178). This can be proven by the juxtaposed actions of Hamlet. In the beginning of the play, the reader sees Hamlet as a melancholic young man mourning the death of his father, but by the end the reader is presented with a nonsensical Hamlet that gains his revenge ruthlessly. • 12. Jack Kevorkian and Euthanasia Euthanasia The thin line between life and death has become an ethical issue many health care providers and the government have long tried to ignore. The understanding that life begins at birth, and ends when the heartbeat and breathing have ceased has long been deemed factual. Medical technologies have changed this with respirators, artificial defibrillators, and transplants (Macionis, 2009). Thus medical and legal experts in the United States define death as an irreversible state involving no response to stimulation, no movement or breathing, no reflexes, and no indication of brain activity (Macionis, 2009, p. 436). California is in the works of voting on a similarly careful measure. One of its sponsors cites Dr. Kevorkian as the perfect reason we need this law in California. We don t want there to be more Dr. Kevorkians (The New York Times, 2007). • 13. Zombie Apocalypse Effect Zombie apocalypse films are traditionally set in a post cataclysmic event that has left world wide destruction and change. The zombies are usually portrayed as cannibalistic monsters, who scavenge the remaining earth looking for food. Possible causes for zombie behavior in a modern population can be attributed to viruses, bacteria or other phenomena that reduce the mental capacity of humans causing them to behave in a very primitive and destructive fashion. Humans have to survive and prosper, with the mayhem of trying not to be eaten everyday, while trying to establish a sense of government and order. This causes conflict between the protagonist and the zombies which is usually resolved by finding a cure. These films, due to their complex storylines, interesting characters, and possible world altering implications, have attracted large crowds at the theaters for many years. At the top [there was] a small, high, and mighty Atlantic ruling class of merchants, planters, and political leaders, who, in ruffles and finery, sat in the American Continental Congress and British Parliament (14). The act does not allow military solders from remaining in a state of conflict for more than 60 days. After 60 days the President must ask Congress again for authorization. The act was made to restrain the President strength to send U.S. military overseas by requiring the executive branch to discuss with Congress before involving U.S. troops in overseas combat. Before the Wars Power Act the Constitution was used to see who could declare war however it was contradictory. In Article I of The Constitution the power to declare war as well as have the power to raise an army and navy, and fund war efforts was given to Congress however in Article III of The Constitution the President is named Commander In Chief of the armed forces. • 21. Surcharge Essay The process is done by simply placing a surcharge fill on top of the soil that requires consolidation. The excess load is referred to as surcharge load. The load must be placed in several stages so as to prevent instability. Once the predicted consolidation is achieved, the fill can be removed and construction can be started. Surcharge which was installed as a temporary load, can be removed when the settlements exceed the foretold final settlement. Normally this is done only after the remaining excess pore water pressure becomes less than the stress increase caused by the temporary surcharge. If the surcharge is higher than the work load, the soil will always be in an over consolidated state. The secondary compression for over consolidated soil is much smaller than that of normally consolidated soil. The secondary settlement can be reduced or even eliminated either by increasing the time of temporary overloading or by using a heavier overload. Dixon in 1928) began with the lengthy dispute regarding how one explained alike cultural traits occurring in geographically separate areas (1928, Dixon: 33; also 182s). It could not be denied that every cultural quality was discovered or invented first. There was always necessarily a beginning, a first for all. (1928, Dixon: 35). In the chapter Discovery and Invention , he takes note to separate creation and discovery (conception) according to purpose , suggesting the two occur as a sequence: (accidental) conception, then (purposeful) creation. He then goes on to discuss the factors of each in detail. Conception is made up of identification, opportunity, and imagination that is appreciated. Invention is either directional or accidental, distinguished as being an improvement or entirely new(He borrows from the sociologists H. S. Harrison and L. Bernard). The responsible factors were available knowledge, needs, opportunity, and genius. Finally, he goes on to discuss diffusion, step three in his sequence: Conceptualization creation dispersal. In this model, individuals discover or invent and the process is unproductive and without result until others adopt it . Without duplicating beyond the inventor or discoverer, the new quality remains personal, an eccentricity, intriguing or entertaining, but not of great importance (1928, Dixon: 59). The First Invention Of Radiology The first invention of radiology began with the creation of X rays in 1895 when Wilhelm Roentgen, a 50 year old professor of physics at Germany s University of Wurzburg, made a discovery that would in a very short time change medical and human history. Though, discovered by accident, Roentgen s discovery would help detect tumors, broken bones and bullets buried within bodies, never before seen with the naked eye. Since the invention of X rays, there had been numerous discoveries of similar inventions, from image intensifier to ultrasound to magnetic resonance imaging. Without these inventions, humans would not have been able to see the inner workings of the body or detect key information in modern times that allow us to prevent serious illnesses where other inventions proved useless since imaging plays a huge role in diagnosis. In current society, radiology s first creation has been exposed to most citizens, whether it is to detect a broken bone at the doctor s or to determine a person s risk of getting cavities at the dentist s. Although, inventions from radiology does hold risks of radiation exposure amongst its patients, the benefits of them greatly outweighs its risks. • 26. Cell Phone Radiation On Human Brain The objective of this research is to study the effect of cell phone radiation on human brain. It is known that the cell phone produces electromagnetic radiation which could be harmful to the human brain. When the phone is placed 5 cm away from the head there is less brain activity compared to when the cell phone is placed next to the ear or head on either side. Special attention is focused on Temporal and Frontal lobes as these are very close to the ear, which is call the electromagnetic radiation. The Electromagnetic radiation is measured in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR). SAR is measured for two common holding positions of mobile phone: Cheek and Tilt. In tilt position, the mobile phone tilted for 15° and 30° from a person s head. The SAR measured in the Cheek position has much lower values than of tilt position. The brain is one of the most important organs of the body that coordinates all the activities. It is divided into three major parts namely: Cerebrum, Cerebellum, brain stem and diencephalon. Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It covers the diencephalon and is divided into right and left hemisphere longitudinally. Each hemisphere is subdivided into brain lobes, named as: Frontal lobe, Parietal lobe, Temporal lobe and Occipital lobe. The effect of SAR majority depends on the antenna position on the mobile phone. A mobile phone with mounted antenna on top and hold in tilt position results in more absorption of EM radiation by the head. This happens as the antenna is closer proximity to the head. Moreover, SAR values change with variation of holding position of mobile phone. Cheek and tilt are two prevalent ways of holding a mobile phone. The electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly hazardous to humans [1]. The radio frequency used for communication can penetrate through semi solid substances, such as living tissue with a distance proportional to its power density. Research has demonstrated that the short term effect of EM waves on the human brain [2]. However, the evidence supporting the research is very little for any kind of short or long term effect. As Satan gazes on Adam and Eve, he is struck by their blissful state, which sends him into a spiral of confusion as he slightly reconsiders his plan to destroy them. To himself, Satan addresses the pair; he begins regretful and with pity for Adam and Eve. He later shifts in tone to vengeful, envious, and angry. Further exemplifying Satan s contrasting attitudes, Milton uses antonymous words of emotion throughout the passage. By the end of passage, Milton solidifies Satan s hardening of heart and ends the struggle that has been festering inside Satan since his first act of rebellion against God. Milton successfully uses both the shift in tone and the emotional diction to reveal Satan s stormy internal conflict. Throughout the passage, Milton inserts beautifully emotional words that describe Satan s contrasting feelings: grief and joy, woe and bliss, loathing and delight. The positive feelings that Satan expresses, though describing Adam and Eve s state, reflect the good nature in Satan. That nature is visibly small, as Satan describes himself as joyful or blissful. He merely observes this happiness in Adam and Eve; he even speaks the words with hints of regret. It s simply not possible. Mexico has been the main foreign supplier of marijuana and methamphetamines to the U.S. Drug cartels have been illegally transporting an estimated 70 % of foreign narcotics such as cocaine, heroin, and other drugs into the United States and other countries but were not transporting in such violent methods as used today (Mexico Drug War, ... • 37. Frank Herbert s Use Of The Spice In Dune Theme In Dune, by Frank Herbert, everyone s life depends on the Melange, or the spice. The spice was a drug that could not be reproduced and only found on the planet Arrakis. Frank Herbert shows in Dune that there are products like the spice that large populations depends on. First, the Fremen on Arrakis heavily depends on the spice. The spice is in their everyday food and materials. They use the spice to make things such as spice paper, spice fibre, and chemical explosives. It is also in their food and drinks. Paul eats the two leaf wrapped morsels into his hand. They reeked of spice (Herbert 282). The people also drink spice coffee and spice beer (145). Since spice is so rare, it is also used as a currency against the Guild. The Fremen use the spice to bribe the Guild to keep [their] skies clear of satellites and such that none may spy what [they] do to the face of Arrakis. (283). Spice is also used during the spice trance during the transfer of Reverend Mothers. For the Fremen, they would die if the spice disappeared. Not only do they use it as parts of objects and consumables, it is also their currency. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Guild is in charge of all trade in between the worlds. The Guilds use the spice because the spice heightens awareness. The space navigators use orange spice gas, which gives them the ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of the universe without moving (105). This is important because they need to be able to travel through space at an incredible speed. Also, because the spice is so popular with the people, the Guild can make money by transferring the spice from Arrakis. The Guild knows of the spice s importance to the Universe so when Paul threatens to destroy all spice production on Arrakis...forever (461), even they listen to his commands. • 38. The Grand Canyon The Grand Canyon National Park contains one of the most well known natural wonders of our country: The Grand Canyon. It is located in Arizona. Over the years, the Grand Canyon has attracted many visitors, and today the park sees nearly five million visitors yearly (NPS, History Culture). It has always been a target for human interest, going back to the days where Native Americans ruled the land and continuing through present times. However, like the rest of our natural world, the Grand Canyon faces many threats, mainly due to humans. What are these things that threaten the Grand Canyon, what is being done to combat them, and what else can be done to protect the Grand Canyon National Park? Within the Grand Canyon lays the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to a report by the National Parks Conservation Association, one challenge is Colorado River management actions that do not incorporate adaptive strategies for protecting and restoring fish, river flows, riverine habitats, cultural sites, and archaeological resources along the river corridor NPCA, 3). Other problems include sounds cape management, such as over flights that can disturb visitors, wildlife, and the 11 Native American tribes which live in the park (NPCA, 3). Greater and better relationships with these tribes are also wanted. Mining activities from the past and present, along with air pollution from nearby areas also pose threats to the health of the park. Due to environmental change, the canyon even faces threats from non native animals intruding. According to Anne Minard of the High Country News, drought has recently brought bison into the park. They were originally taken into Arizona for an experiment to breed them with cattle, although that failed (Minard). Biologists with the National Park Service say the huge animals (males can weigh up to 2,500 pounds) are wallowing in riparian areas and damaging cultural sites. They considered building a fence, but that would affect other wildlife, such as mule deer (Minard). The NPCA also states that there are front country and backcountry management and protection needs, particularly in regard to the challenges of park size, visitation patterns, and shortfalls in funding, ... • 39. Pleasant Ambient Odor Effect of Pleasant Ambient Odor on Semantic Memory Memory is a topic that has fascinated scientists throughout time. How it works, how it is influenced, and how it can be improved are just a few of the many questions that have captured the attention of researchers around the world. One notable area that has gained attention in the last few decades is the Proust phenomenon, which is how odors can be especially powerful reminders of autobiographical experience (Chu Downes, 2000). This proposal will be structured to explore if this phenomenon extends from autobiographical memory to semantic memory. The Proust phenomenon has been explored and supported by several researchers. For instance, Chu and Downes (2002) found that odors are indeed especially potent as retrieval cues, to the extent that they automatically induce the retrieval of unrelated and irrelevant detail in the incongruent odor condition (p. 6). Additionally, Herz and Schooler (2002) and Castellanos, Hudson, Haviland Jones, and Wilson (2010) concluded after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In one study, Smith, Nielson, Woodard, Seidenberg, and Verber (2011) found significant evidence that physical activity improved semantic memory in participants with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). Another study of interest found that, while aging had a negative effect on autobiographical and episodic memory, it did not affect semantic memory (St Laurent, Abdi, Burianová, Grady, 2011). The most notable study, which researched the link between semantic memory and sensory modalities, found evidence supporting that the organization of semantic memory corresponds to types of information associated with sensory modalities (Marques, 2006). However, this study only focused on this association in the conceptual sense, not the actual sensory input; for instance, one question, structured like the others, asked if a dog can bark, bark being the sensory modality (Marques, ... • 40. Descriptive Essay About My Cousin It s mid July and I am determined to experience something completely new and get out of my comfort zone one more time while I m on vacation, and although up to this point I have gone out more that I should ve and met new people that I would ve never have talked to in my life, I m glad I was able to do so. But that not the point of this story, let me get back on track. Many people don t know that I have a cousin that is a year younger and looks exactly like me, it is kind of surreal to even look at and process it, her name is Jessica but for short it has always been Jessi. Jessi being my exact replica has a roundish ovalish face, brown eyes, quarter back length hair that is curly and a deep dark brown like mine. Her and I go way back to when I could barely talk and she could begin to crawl. Anyway as we grew up we had a sisterly bond and we will probably continue having that. And with that bond comes many invitations to each other s events. We will go to each other s graduations, birthday parties, and in this occasion I would be going to her school. Hey you should come to my school sometime, it will be so fun and you can meet some of my teachers and friends! Jessica asked me one day after hanging out. That would be so fun! But when would we do it? I respond casually but intrigued I m not for sure yet, but I know that on Friday we are having a combibio (a get together of the whole school, where they eat and 0dance) and there will be dancing and we don t really have ... • 41. Bupivacaine Report The compatibility of a LB with other drugs and implanted materials is an important factor impacting drug safety and efficacy. The liposomal formulation of the local anesthetic bupivacaine is designed to provide prolonged postsurgical analgesia. Its compatibility with other drugs and materials depends on the compatibility of the drug itself, along with the integrity of liposomal components. A series of studies was conducted by Kharitonov V ed al to evaluate the compatibility of liposome bupivacaine with diluents, implanted materials, and other drugs likely to be encountered in the surgical settings in which it is used. Liposome bupivacaine demonstrated compatibility with diluents as normal saline, lactated Ringer s solution and with implanted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. I Am A Math Lesson Essay For my second lesson, I decided to conduct a math lesson as I had never conducted a math lesson in an elementary classroom let alone a 3rd grade classroom. I discussed with my CT what math concept I could teach that pertained to one of the 3rd grade standards. My CT told me that I could introduce the new concept of area to the class on the Friday that I was supposed to teach my lesson. I knew that that introducing a new topic on a Friday in an elementary classroom was not ideal as the majority of teachers that I have observed in the past usually wrap up their week s lessons on Friday. The Friday I was conducting my lesson was also a shorten day due to Fall Break, so I thought the students would show some off task behavior for the early release day. These circumstances made me think hard about how I was going to introduce the concept of area to the students in an effective way. I knew that I needed to have a lesson that included an exploratory hands on activity to keep the students engaged and wanting to learn. Therefore, I decided to use cheese crackers as manipulatives to represent square units. The students were to first guess what the area of the different shapes in a worksheet packet were and then they were to use the crackers to figure out the actually area of the different shapes. I had been grading the students weekly math quizzes that pertained to arrays and multiplication a couple of weeks prior to my lesson which helped me presses the students knowledge on ...
