Fugard, alienation is definitely one of the most apparent themes because in both books the main
characters are always told that they are different like when Mariam is called harami and when Sam
and Willy are discriminated by Hally. In both of these texts, the main characters are alienated in a way
that made them feel so different to the point where it affected their lives because they always felt like
they are incapable. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, after Mariam was always called a harami, meaning
bastard in Arabic, by Nana, she always thought that this small thing somehow made her incapable of
going to school and other simple things in life. In Master Harold ...and the boys, Sam and Willie,
mainly Sam, was always being discriminated by Hally. Due to this, Hally made Sam feel like he was

poem is angry, sad, and reflects a relationship where she was hurt and misses the other person. The
woman tries to control her inner feelings when she encounters the man, concealing her true feelings
with polite conversation. Just by the tone of her inner feelings, you can see the woman thinks the man
from her past caused her harm. The woman of Carolyn Kizer s Bitch provides a satiric interpretation
of a typical meeting between her and an ex lover since the end of their relationship. In a single, thirty
four line stanza, the woman participates in a witty monologue that displays a ideally ironic division:
the woman s two coinciding but opposite interchanges, one entailing of the woman s external
conversation with her former lover and the other of silent warnings, threats, and clarifications to her

The Appalachian Region
The Appalachian region is one of the most valuable areas of the United States. It is rich in many
natural aspects and is home to some of the hardest working citizens in this country. Unfortunately,
Appalachia is also home to a variety of harsh social problems including severe drug abuse and a
gripping poverty facing a large portion of Appalachian citizens. The two of these issues seem to go
hand in hand in many cases, so the solution of one could also lead to the solution of the other.
Appalachians have always had a history of handling their own problems, these drastic social problems
are no different.
The entire country is facing a serious drug abuse epidemic, and Appalachia sees the effects of this
epidemic as much or more than any other part of the country. As the coal industry dies, jobs are
disappearing much more quickly than new industries are able to replace the jobs that have been lost.
This is causing many Appalachian citizens to turn to other means of producing an income, whether
they are legal or not. One of the most popular sources of illegal income in Appalachia is the drug
trade, more specifically, the trade of prescription drugs. In the 1990s, many pharmaceutical companies
began aggressively marketing their new prescription drugs such as OxyContin and other prescription
pain killers to the citizens of Appalachia for the abundance of work related injuries from the
dangerous jobs they have done their entire lives. Heroin has also recently become a drug of choice
