1. Life Of Pi Essays
Crafting an essay on the theme of "Life of Pi" is no easy feat. The novel, penned by Yann
Martel, delves into profound philosophical and existential questions, blending adventure with
spirituality. The difficulty lies not only in comprehending the intricate narrative but also in
capturing the essence of its allegorical elements.
To embark on such an essay, one must navigate the vast ocean of themes interwoven within the
storyline. Addressing the psychological struggles of the protagonist, Pi Patel, as he grapples with
survival on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, requires a nuanced understanding of human resilience
and the interplay between faith and reason.
Moreover, the narrative's layered structure, oscillating between realism and allegory, demands a
keen analytical eye. Unraveling the symbolism behind Pi's journey becomes a challenging task,
necessitating a careful examination of the author's intentions and the broader philosophical
implications.
Adding to the complexity is the task of conveying the novel's unique narrative style, blending
adventure, spirituality, and introspection. The challenge is not only to narrate Pi's physical
journey but to articulate the emotional and metaphysical odyssey he undergoes, as well.
Furthermore, tackling the broader context of "Life of Pi" within literature and its impact on
readers requires a comprehensive exploration of critical analyses and scholarly perspectives.
Drawing connections to various literary traditions and philosophical discourses adds an
additional layer of difficulty.
In conclusion, crafting an essay on the "Life of Pi" necessitates a multifaceted approach,
combining literary analysis, philosophical inquiry, and an understanding of narrative intricacies.
It's a task that demands not only a grasp of the novel's plot but an ability to delve into its
profound themes and allegorical nuances.

2. Similarities Between Martin Luther King Jr And Malala
Youfzai
Your Intro:
According to Martin Luther King Jr, Human progress is neither automatic nor
inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and
struggles (brainyquote.com). This is a very powerful quote because if you do not
struggle or sacrifice in life, when come to a point where you have to make
decisions or take action, you re not going to be able to decide what to do or think.
This is how we progress and go forward, because we make mistakes and learn from
them to make things better in the world around us. In fact, Dr. King s quote suggests
that struggle often motivates change. For example, Many activists have been
motivated by their personal struggles. These are people who can truly speak for their
cause, because they lived it,and really understand what they say and do. Activists
who were motivated by their personal struggles are people like Harriet Tubman,
Martin Luther King Jr. and Malala Yousafzai. Even though they all struggled with
different things at different times, their struggles motivated them to speak out for
their cause and change the world.

Workplace Protection for Unpaid Interns
Sexual harassment claims from unpaid interns against companies have been
consistently dismissed. Current legal precedent forces students who accepting
unpaid internships into a pool of vulnerable, powerless, at risk population. Many
cases go undocumented, interns are often disempowered, feeling inferior in the
workplace, working for no pay (often actually paying tuition for the honor to work
for free), report to multiple superiors. With hopes of a future job offer, interns who
experience harassment may repress their feelings from this inappropriate behavior

The Oregon Advocacy Commission in support of HB 2669 to the House Rules
Committee summarized the goals of this policy and the benefits that would be
afforded to interns; providing the protections that we all expect in the workplace to
the hard working interns serving in so many offices state wide. During internships
students are exposed to every working environment and situation which can included
predatory, discriminatory environments. [...] We need to assure that they have rights
and protections.
Description of services
Extending protections to unpaid interns from discrimination and retaliation on the
basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, marital status,
age, military service, and disability (Littler Mendelson, 2013), was a top priority of
this bill. This nationwide issue has received national attention after several cases of
sexual harassment being refused to be heard by the courts. Interns who are not
receiving a paycheck are not employees under the Civil Rights Act and thus, they re
not protected (Hickman Thompson, 2013).
Empowering interns to have legal access to their guaranteed civil rights has been an
issue due to a legal loophole in language, while this has been a long standing issue,
Oregon showed that it can be closed with a simple bill that had unanimous bi partisan
support.

4. Adolescents First Sexual Behavior
The gender differences between the timing of an adolescent s first sexual behavior
J Anna Jones
Spalding University Louisville, KY 40203
In the field of Psychology there are many different topics that come about when
learning about the essentials of life span development. Life span development
consists of numerous things that people encounter from birth, childhood,
adolescents, and adulthood. Today let s analyze the gender differences between the
timing of an adolescent s first sexual behavior. The reason for these differences
between the gender can be made up of multiple things. Some researchers may say
that sexual orientation, race, culture or other demographic characteristics play a
role. When looking at this particular topic, for boys participating in sexual behaviors
is consider normally. Where as for a girl it is looked downed on because of the risk
of pregnancy at a young age. The timing for boys and girls first sexual behavior
mainly depends on the maturity and physical level of the adolescents. Most can
confirm that it is likely for girls to mature faster than boys because of the physical
changes and thought process that happens so fast within the female adolescent s body.

These differences consists of race, sexual orientation, culture or other demographic
characteristics. The timing can be caused by the adolescent wanting to experiment
and the change of going into adulthood. In addition to the adolescents body change
and natural desires of sexual behavior. Although this timing is something that
naturally happens, adolescents can face consequences for their sexual behavior.
Adolescents can come into contact with sexually transmitted diseases, HPV or HIV.
The cause of this is not using protection when having intercourse. Also adolescent
pregnancy is another consequence when not being careful during sexual

America with a weak central government, because of the lack authority needed to

others felt that a strong government would sufficiently help the nation run as one.

6. 6 Challenges For International Students In College Essay
When moving to a new town, a new country, or even a new continent, there are many
challenges students face when receiving education in a new culture. There is a
variety of challenges which these students face, including language barriers,
economic resources, and what people refer to as culture shock . The combination of
these three challenges, alongside many unlisted others, can sometimes lead to a very
challenging assimilation phase for new residents of place, especially when they are
also new students.
The first challenge that new immigrants can face when receiving education in a new
culture is that of a language barrier. Many times when starting education is a new

According to the Merriam webster dictionary, culture shock is defined as a sense of
confusion and uncertainty sometimes with feelings of anxiety that may affect people
exposed to an alien culture or environment with adequate preparation . In the article 6
Challenges for International Students in College by Katy Hopkins, she discusses
different effects of culture shock that international students have affect them. With a
new culture comes many different changes, both in education and in social life. In
regards to education, there are two distinct points that Hopkins makes. First, she
points out that many universities require students to take a variety of courses, or
what is referred to as general study . Hopkins says that, this can come as a surprise
for international students who expect only to take, for example, business or
engineering courses . (Hopkins. 2012) The second aspect of cultural shock that
Hopkins points out is the change in the dynamic between professors and students. In
other countries, academic environments are more of a hands off experience, with a
distinct role for students and instructors. Whereas in education in the culture they
may be entering, as Hopkins states, professors...want learning to be a collaborative
experience, and encourage participation from students both in class and during their
office hours .

Throughout history, criminal investigators have encountered different forms of
serial killers. One of the many famous serial killers in the twentieth century was
Theodore Robert Bundy (Ted Bundy). Ted Bundy was responsible for the Chi
Omega killings and many more. When people think of serial killers, they visualize
some dirty, crazy, looking individual that would stand out from everybody else. In
Ted s case this was different. Ted Bundywas a very smart individual who had
attended college at various colleges, studying law and finally receiving his degree in
psychology from the University of Washington. He had volunteered for the

different states worked together in the apprehension of Bundy. The conviction of Ted
Bundy was credit towards good criminal investigation; with police cooperation,
forensic evidence and the witnesses statements. The police cooperation was the first
initial process of the investigation. The murders had started in Seattle, Washington
on January 31, 1974. Ted Bundy was living in Seattle and attending school at the
University of Washington at that present time. The first reported victim was a
twenty one year old by the name of Lynda Ann Healy. She had been abducted from
her apartment and the officers could only find her nightgown that was neatly hung
up in her closest with blood on it and her sheets also had traces of blood. The police
conducted searches but was unable to find Lynda. On March 12, Donna Gail Mason
at Evergreen State College located in Olympia, Washington was last seen leaving her
dorm to attend a concert. She was later reported missing and was not located. In
Ellensburg, Washington at Central Washington State College Susan Elaine Rancourt
disappeared from her campus on April 17, 1974. The
8. Godel s Argument For The Existence Of God
Logically, choosing to believe in God is more advantageous than choosing not to.
Pascal s wager illustrates this by reasoning that if one chooses to believe in God and
He exists, infinite reward can be gained; and if he doesn t exist there is nothing to
lose. Likewise, if one chooses not to believe in Godand he exists, infinite pain and
suffering result; but if he does not exist, there is no loss. Pascal also claims that
avoiding wagering is not optional failure to decide may automatically have the same
results as the wagering against God. Believing in God is more logical in the sense
that there is much to gain and nothing to lose.
Mathematically, there is proof of God s existence. Kurt Godel revolutionized

9. Melancholy, By Carina Del Valle Schorske
Melancholy, written by Carina del Valle Schorske, presents the reader with the
mystery of melancholy and its relation to clinical depression a relevant, urgent
issue that should indeed be addressed. However, the mystery remains unsolved as
the piece progresses, and not in a way that promotes open ended discussion. The
opening paragraph contains four central themes: melancholy does not equate to
depression; depression is hard to define; a number of well known artists and
writers deal with this affliction and try to capture the feeling in their work;
melancholy s difference from depression lies in its charms. As an introduction to
the piece, the themes clearly display del Valle Schorske s thoughts on melancholy
and depression. It s the body paragraphs that spawn confusion between the four
main ideas. Del Valle Schorske states: The charms of melancholy seem to be the
charms of van Gogh s quietly kaleidoscopic color palette: in one self portrait, every
color used on his face is echoed elsewhere in the surroundings. In only the second
paragraph, del Valle Schorske tackles two of her four themes artists suffer and
melancholy charms in a single sentence. And a few lines later, she throws in a third:
melancholy is not depression: The charms of his work become the charms of his
persona and his predicament. Here is where confusion begins to complicate the main
thesis; van Gogh s work is simultaneously melancholic and a product of depression,
which is a direct contradiction of,
10. Analysis Of A Lock Of Hair And A Wounded Heart
A Lock of Hair and a Wounded Heart Throughout the course of history and its
literature, authors and poets have served as messengers for the times in which they
lived, whether it be about political upheaval or social constructs or the lives of the
common man. One way this was accomplished was through satire. Alexander Pope,
whom of which lived in the literary Restoration period and wrote the poem, The
Rape of the Lock, in 1714, provides a work as an excellent example of satire. He
parodies the upper classes favorite literature (epic, heroic poetry) to mock the
absurdity and irrationality of the upper class. Using the common tropes of divine
intervention, hyperbole, and lofty language, a gleefully sarcastic tone emerges to
allow the reader to see through the faux seriousness regarding the loss of a strand of
hairfrom a noble woman. In numerous works of epic poetry and that of the classic
style, an invocation to divine spirits and gods invited a sense of vindication and
importance in a work. Works like Homer s long beloved Odyssey among others
almost completely rely on divine intervention to effectuate the plot and justify actions
of either the protagonist or the antagonist. Pope crafitly uses this common tactic in
such works to parody the highbrow love for them. In the case of Belinda, her beauty
is such to rival nymphs and Aphrodite; she is incontestably divine in human form,
made of love and youth and flowering nature. That beauty, however, is soiled when a

The trick to retirement is making the savings and investment part of that formula
last as long as you do. Traditionally, experts have advised you to invest your savings
in stocks and bonds, with the ratio of stocks to bonds gradually decreasing as you
get older. The rule of thumb was to have 65% of your investment dollars in bonds by
your 65th birthday. (aol.sageonline.com) This rule of thumb has changed recently in
order to take into account the increase in life expectancy. Now that your retirement
money has to last longer, the experts are beginning to lean toward investing more of
your money in the stock market and keeping it there further into retirement than you
normally would. The most important notion that retirees must learn is that the longer
you can go without dipping into your principal, the longer your money will last for
you due to the rule of compounding of interest. There are numerous different
techniques for people to use in order to retire comfortably and remain comfortable
until their deaths. Since deciding how much money you need for retirement is
obviously a highly personal calculation, individuals must explore the many different
instruments for retirement. So how should people invest today for the future and
their retirement?
The most crucial retirement investing advice anyone can give is really quite simple:

This room will always be a part of my life. From the shifts in furniture to the color

Many memories have been made throughout my fifteen years of residence in my
house. It all started in the morning with that sweet smell of a home cooked
breakfast alongside my nightstand. I can feel goosebumps beginning to shiver my
skin as the smell of my meal travels through my nose. The light shined bright in the
window while I sat up out of my queen sized bed. I took a few solemn steps with my
plate in hand when suddenly I heard my old floor creaking as I neared my small
desk. I sit down on my chairand flip the switch to my computer. The noise of my
running desktop fans blow emphatically catches my attention and I noticed
something quite off. My computer had a sticky note taped to the back saying, Do
not turn on, proceed with caution . These words started filtering through my eyes
and I knew I would be in for a bad experience. Freaking out seemed to be my only
option, however once I could smell the stench of my computer, turning it off was
all my brain was saying. My mother swiftly entered my room to check on me and
she gave me a frantic look of anger when she saw my fried computer. It was almost
like I had just committed a crime and now she had just witnessed it. Throw it away!
she said, It s useless now . I obeyed her request and proceeded to throw my cheap

14. Demographic And Epidemiological Issues Of India
3.1 Demographic epidemiological issues: Major problem in India is infectious
diseases as well as chronic degenerative diseases. The former is related to poor
implementation of the public health programs, lack of awareness and the latter to
demographic transition with increase in life expectancy. Economic deprivation in a
large segment of population results in poor access to healthcare. Poor educational
status leads to non utilization of health services and increase in avoidable risk
factors. India faces high burden of disease because of lack of environmental
sanitation and safe drinking water, under nutrition, poor living conditions, and
limited access to preventive and curative health services. Lack of education, gender
inequality and explosive growth of population contribute to increasing burden of
disease. In the last decade, government has increased expenditure to improve the
environmental sanitation and public awareness to deal these issues, but simply it is
not enough to benefit to all the areas. Lack of awareness is a problem which is faced
in building access to healthcare. Mass awareness is important since even if the
treatment is free, unless the masses are educated and informed about the symptoms
of the diseases, its repercussions and complications and finally the treatment
available; there is no guarantee that people will avail these. Besides this, lack of
health insurance and its low penetration causes further challenge towards access to
healthcare.

Mitt Romney in his speech to the RNC just four years ago would be considered near
traitorous to the republican party in the divisive politics of the present. In this

issue exists, but as to how the United Statesshould react to the ones waking up at

to gradually increase, and between the 1830 s and 1860 s there is an influx in

which saw more than 500,000 immigrants arrive (again, almost entirely from Western

the 1840s, 50s, and 60s, approximately 6.6 million immigrants arrived in the United

16. The Feminine Touch
Chess (2011) continues examining the ad s contents by noting the presence of the
feminine touch, which Erving Goffman describes as a cradling or delicate sense of
touch. This is particularly relevant given the DS Lite s touch screen interface. As
such, the content of the ad focuses on the woman playing, not the game or the system
itself. Instead of including the woman in the domain of play itself, the ad resorts to
presenting her as delicate and overtly feminine, thus dividing her from the rest of the
gaming audience.
A second case Chess (2011) examines is an advertisement for WiiFit, a health centric
game and hardware addition to the Wii gaming system. The ad shows rows of
models using the Wii Fit board, placed against a green background, where green is
the color representing health and natural living. The white attire of the models
contrast the background color, but supplement its meaning by representing purity and
simplicity Kama all values that one may strive for while using the Wii Fit (Chess,
2011).
In her analysis, Chess (2011) describes advertising attempt to tap into women s
body conscious aptitude. While Wii Fit seemed to posit itself as a product that
anyone can use regardless of sex or ethnicity, the fact that it appears in magazines
such as O and Good Housekeeping clearly Target a female audience and plays on
the standardized value of healthy living (Chess, 2011). It is quite apparent that this
type of game does not fall in the traditional realm of games,

In this section the proposed approach is applied to a case study. In the case study,
environmental and social impacts of new and remanufactured diesel engines are

3.1 Goal definition, scoping and functional unit
The engines are produced and used in China. Each engine consists of 277 components
made of cast iron, steel, aluminium, steel alloy and rubber. The major components are
cylinder block, cylinder head, fly wheel housing, gear box, connection rod, crankshaft,
and flywheel. Those components account for 66% of the engine mass.

assembly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The functional unit of the study is 300,000 km travelled by the diesel engine. The
fuel efficiency of the engine is 0.250 litres per km. It is assumed that the fuel
efficiency of both engines is equal.
3.2 Life cycle inventory
In order to estimate the amount of resources required and emissions released to
produce steel, cast iron, and aluminium, inventory data published by [11] is utilized.
To compute emissions released by electricity production, China s electricity
generation life cycle inventory found in [12] is used. To calculate resources
consumed and emissions produced due to diesel fuel refinery and combustion, data
presented in [13] and [14] are applied.
For the social aspect, based on the information provided by the manufacturer, data
summarized in Table 1 is obtained. Note that Rmfg stands for remanufactured. For
the use phase, cost incurred due to diesel fuel consumption is calculated as the
following, 300,000 km Г— 0.25 litre/km Г— 7.724 CNY/litre = 579,315 CNY. 7.72
CNY/litre was the average price of diesel fuel in China in 2013. CNY stands for
Chinese Yuan, the currency of China. In order to estimate the portion of value
added in the form of employee compensation in China (VAchina) over the life cycle
of the diesel engines, China s EIO table (42 sectors) for the year of 2007 is used [15].
Since the economic data is in terms of 2013 CNY then we convert them to 2007

Lee s actions contradict Holden s personality, her predictability overrules all of the

20. Ngos As A Part Of Accountability
NGOs AS A PART OF ACCOUNTABILITY CHAIN IN SERBIAN POLITICS
INTRODUCTION
At the heart of good governance are the ideas of accountability, transparency and
participation. These ideas have grown in popularity after democratic changes in
2000; hence it could be said that concept of accountability is relatively new in Serbia.
Accountability has different meaning in different political systems, but in general by
accountability is meant the imperative to make public officials answerable for their
behavior and responsive to the entity from which they derive their authority.
Accountability also means establishing criteria to measure the performance of public
officials, as well as oversight mechanisms to ensure that standards are met. ... Show

Citizens are at the highest level of the accountability chain in Serbia and all
authorities are accountable to the citizens. Genuine elections no matter how free and
fair are insufficient in ensuring that elected officials are accountable and responsive
to citizens. Therefore, citizens need to participate in political processes between
elections and parliaments are citizens institutions that should initiate and enable
participation. As the representative branches of democratic governments, parliaments
are meant to provide citizens with links to the policy making process and with
methods of holding the executive branch to account.
While the Government is accountable to the Parliament, on the bottom of this
structure are various public bodies, agencies, etc. to which the Government assigns
power and responsibilities through regulations and policies. Independent bodies
working together with the Parliament on oversight function play an important role in
the chain of accountability.
Participants can discharge their accountability functions effectively only if they know
to whom they are accountable and for what. Likewise, they can hold others
accountable only if they understand who is accountable to them and for what. In
Serbian political practice, public officials do not have understanding of these matters
or they try to avoid responsibilities. Only at the highest level Government towards

The Power of the Family in White Noise
Don Dellilo s protagonist in his novel White Noise, Jack Gladney, has a nuclear
family that is, ostensibly, a prime example of the disjointed nature way of the family
of the 80 s and 90 s what with Jack s multiple past marriages and the fact that his
children aren t all related. It s basically the antipodal image of the 1950 s nuclear
family. Despite this surface level disjointedness, it is his family and the extrasensory
rapport that he shares with them allows Jack to survive in his world. Murray, Jack s
friend, argues that The family is strongest where objective reality is most likely to be
misinterpreted (82). Heinrich, Jack s son, explicates this notion in his constant ...

So in recounting the smell of panties etc., and viewing such encounters with either
irony, sympathy and fond amusement, Jack is able not only to affirm the present and
escape the past, but accomplishes something much larger: namely the ability to affirm
the realness of such feelings. Thus the family, in this instance Babette, serves as the
medium through which Jack is able to overcome Heinrich s skepticism (which is
representative of modern science (24)) as to the reality of human emotions. DeLillo s
image, moreover, of Jack and Babette rescuing themselves from the past also suggests
that without family or someone to commune with, man can become lost in the past.
DeLillo s novel is almost obsessively concerned with appliances: TVs, radios,
microwaves etc. They are omnipresent, not only in the characters worlds but within
the narrative itself. DeLillo repeatedly interrupts his narrative with sentences like
The TV said: And other trends that could dramatically impact our portfolio (61) or
MasterCard, Visa, American Express (100) or That chirping sound was just the
radiator (94). Just as Jack s world is one suffused with such objects, so too is the
narrative, a technique which DeLillo uses to force the reader into Jack Gladney s
world. Objects play a dualistic role in Jack s familial life. Jack tells us that
22. Blindness By Jose Saramago
The novel Blindness by Jose Saramago uses an epidemic of blindness as the means to
illustrate the fault in humanity. Blindness in this sense can hold countless differing
meaning and values thus making it a prime literate and metaphoric choice to portray
his message rather than any other epidemic. The definition of blindnessare 1
Sightless; having less than 1/10 of normal vision in the more efficient eye when
refractive defects are fully corrected by lenses; 2 Unable or unwilling to discern or
judge . Although within the book the form of blindness is in the medical context of
lost of vision, the author carries through his underlying message according to the
second definition of blindness. Metaphorically the author may have intended to
portray the ignorance of society and how being individually oriented may leave us
blind to the problems we create.
For one within the book one of the main characters: the doctor states Fighting has
always been a form of blindness. Through the doctor s speech the author depicts that
the epidemic of blindness arguably allowed them to see that they actually had been
blind all along. The fact that we humans can argue, fight and kill each other in a
sense leaves us blind since we are unable to see another person s view resulting in
fight. Thus in lament terms the unwillingness to view ... Show more content on

23. The Key University ( Tku ) Data Breach Case Study
Introduction
This analysis discusses some issues and requirements to correct these issues that are
outlined in the Turn Key University (TKU) data breach case study. In addition to
these issues and requirements, some applicable laws will be discussed and some
controls will be suggested for implementation.
Issues
Currently there are virtually no information security policies in place. Additionally,
there are no formal processes or procedures in place for many tasks that are
performed on the network. There is also no formal training for anyone, including the
administrators and basic users.
1. Governing Policies
There are no policies governing the TKU network except for one policy relating to
printing reports and that policy is routinely ignored. Without policies to guide the
users and administrators of the system it is impossible to discourage unwanted
behaviors such as users routinely sharing network credentials. Additionally, the
administrators have been inconsistently managing the network due to differences in
knowledge, training, and requirements that can only be addressed with direct
guidance in the form of policies.
2. Administrator Transitions
At this time there is no formal transition process or training for new system
administrators. This combination of poor administrator training and a lack of
guidance perpetuated a weak security posture that is still an issue. The three current
administrators have a year or less of experience managing the TKU system and

Toronto is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada; transportation is heart beat to
it. City of Toronto has a better transportation system such as; RT Train, TTC Subway
lines, and buses, Go transit and buses, all need to improve. In order to do that all
three government should work together, it is their responsibility, they should
contribute fund as much as they can and they should provide reliable and affordable
transportation. Providing efficient transportation is all three governments
responsibility. Interruption in rush hour commute. Recently, TTTC subway lines
were broken; gas leakage electrical and commuting delay even subway lines closed
for several hour for repair. Some busroutes don t have enough service. I used the line

buses were crowded especially in the rush hours. I could feel the breath of the

26. Balances of Incentives Essay
In the book Freakonomics, Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner discuss how child
moral behaviors are connected to how effective a parent can be when it comes to
enforcing rules and rewarding good actions. This form of tactic, known as
incentives, is a way to accomplish things to get what is needed or desired. The
concept to incentives is that a child should be able to learn from his or her mistake
and gain an understanding of right and wrong. Not only do incentives pertain to a
child s behavioral development but also his or her success as an individual. A child s
response to negative and positive incentives is the most important predictor for
success according to Levitt and Dubner. Negative incentives can encourage a child to

Telling a child that stealing is a bad thing to do and if caught they could go to
juvenile prison; that along can frighten a child to do right. For a child to learn
from incentive do not necessarily have to be negative. Receiving dedicated
rewards for rightful doing is another form of incentive. Children carry on the
characteristics of responsibility for the accommodations of what is wanted. If a
child is indeed, inform that once he or she surpasses the exit exam, then he is able
to attend an ice cream party as an honor. With this goal in mind, it will give the child
the enthusiasm to study and understand the materials need for the exam. Many
programs around the nation are using positive incentives as a way to develop
children success. A programs known as, the Accelerated Reader Program, is a
programs held in Columbia SC school districts from elementary to high school.
Books are to be read among students following with a comprehensive test. Each test is
worth numerous amounts of points and for a certain range of points students are
rewarded with numerous prizes. Some teacher also used this as part of their
curriculum for extra credits for students participation of the program. Students who
normally participates are being recognize for their good actions which shows an
enormous impact on the others who do not attempt to try. Seeing how enjoyable the
incentive can be, the student is then eager to gain that benefit. Another form of
27. Analysis Of Giuseppe Mazzini s The Duties Of Man
Giuseppe Mazzini was instrumental in unifying the Italian nation as his ideals
spread throughout Italy s intellectual community. Although many of his attempts at
rallying the common people to a revolution failed, he circulated and popularized
the idea of a fully unified Italy for the first time since the fall of the Roman Empire.
In his work The Duties of Man, Mazzini establishes that he is largely a romantic
nationalist, since he draws heavily on history; however, he utilizes the power of
certain liberal nationalist sentiments such as individuals rights in his own work. In
this document, Mazzini largely focuses on how the ideas circulated after the
French Revolution regarding the rights of man have corrupted the true nature of a
nation by creating a culture of greed and egoism. While he openly discourages the
erasure and pursuit of these rights, he is quick to point out that individuals egoism
and each nation s separation of class ... has grown and grows worse in nearly every
country, and especially where I write the price of the necessaries of life has gone
on continually rising, the wages of the working man in many branches of industry
falling and the population multiplying (87). He argues here that allowing any
nation to be solely characterized by the rights of its citizens causes a nation to
define itself based on the millions of individuals, dividing any community or
society which he believes is the backbone of the nation. In Mazzini s view, the
solution to this is by fostering a national culture of duty to one another. When he
asks, What is Society but a collection of men who have agreed to bring the strength
of the many in support of the rights of each? the audience is forced to question their
own personal hierarchy between rights and duties; for what is a nation if there is no
work or duty in achieving and maintaining the rights of every man within the nation
(89)? It is through this investigation that Mazzini reveals his ideas of what makes a
nation a nation. By using familial themes, much like the Russian romantic nationalist,
Khomyakov, he is able to portray the nation s people more clearly as a brotherhood
and the nation itself as a maternal figure. Both Mazzini and Khomyakov promote

World
The years 1918 1939, which separate World War I from World War II, witnessed
profound changes in how technologically advanced military organizations would
fight. In most of the cases, during peacetime, military innovation, and technological
developments played an empowering or helping role in advancing profoundly new
and more operative ways of fighting. In a narrow and strict sense, such innovative
improvements were revolutionary. The technological revolution reached the
battlefields and forever changed the way that armies required from the fragile
airplanes and unreliable tanks of World War Ito evolve into more sophisticated

These principles are known as Die Truppenfuhrung and shaped the framework for the

One of the lessons learned after the first world conflict is the necessity of using the

concerned the emergence of the aircraft as a weapon and the adaptation of this
emerging capability on military operations. One of the Airpower advocates Giulio

29. Describing Blake s Mythology In The Four Zoas
According to the definitions provided by Oxford Advanced Learner s Dictionary,
the lexeme myth is considered to be a story from ancient times, especially one that
was told to explain natural events or to describe the early history of a people or
something that many people believe but that does not exist or is false.
In this way, the ancient mythologies were considered to be figments of the collective
mind of people who were trying to explain themselves the world mechanisms calling
upon their imagination. Thus, for them, mythology was the key in explaining the
existence of the world they lived in.
Going further in time, the emergence of Christianity and the development of science
have modified people s old perception about the way in which the world functions as
a complex system. As a consequence, history advanced and mythology was ... Show

Describing Blake s mythology, we can rely on the concept of multi myths that
represent the fact that different views are put forward by individual speakers. This is
obvious in The Four Zoas in which the characters give contradictory perspectives of
the death of Albion. The myth is retold, thus, recreated and this act can reflect Blake
s view of the myth making process, being also an act that ensures the transition of
mythical stories from one generation to generation.
Such beliefs are mirrored in Milton and in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: I was
in a Printing House in Hell saw the method in which / knowledge is transmitted from
generation to generation. (MHH 15:40)
According to Richard M. Dorson, the act of retelling stories is a relatively modern
view of mythography: that myths contain folktale elements and reflect the styles of
individual storytellers is a large step forward in comparative mythological study .

30. Impact Of Environment On The Environment
Introduction:
In an increasingly urbanized environment, many actions that benefit humans can
consequently have a negative impact on the surrounding environment due to how
interconnected Earth s systems are: for example, chemical cleaning products that are
often used in households and businesses, such as Clorox and Fantastic, are a
convenient and useful way to disinfect surfaces and prevent the spread of diseases
between family members, friends, and coworkers. They are cheap and easy to use,
but their market prices tend not to accurately reflect their true cost, specifically the
negative cost that their production and use has on the environment. Many household
cleaning products contain ingredients that can be detrimental to environmental
health. They are often abundant in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC s) including
formaldehyde and ammonia and nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous. These
compounds make their way into waterways when they are flushed down the drain or
reach the atmosphere through evaporation (Davis, n.d.). From there, they become
incorporated into Earth s physical systems, including material cycles such as the
water cycle and the phosphorous, nitrogen, and carbon cycle, and overload their
natural storages. The uncontrolled increase of nutrients leads to rapid plant growth,
eutrophication and the eventual creation of dead zones in aquatic environments (
Nutrient Pollution: The Effects: Environment , n.d.), while the release of VOC s to

The Spanish Civil War was a war that fought between the Nationalists and the
Republicans. Although this war was relatively short lasting from 1936 to 1939, there
were many long term causes leading up to this event. Some of the long term causes
were the Spanish American War, the church and the army, and failed dictatorships.
One of the biggest long term reasons was the Spanish American War because prior to
this war, Spainwas one of the richest and most powerful nations in the world
(Grabowski 37). However, this led to Spain s fatal mistake of buying all their
necessities instead of producing it. As a result, Spain was left behind in terms of
industrialism and stayed as a rural country instead of an industrial one (Payne 46).

In the time before the events leading up to the Spanish Civil War, there was a
variety of political ideas and beliefs in the government. However, as the civil war

wing party members supported fascism, more specifically falangism. These fascist
were called Nationalists and the left wing party members were called Loyalists or
Republicans. However, the Nationalists viewed the Republicans as Reds and the
Republicans viewed the Nationalists as traitors to Spain (Grabowski 34). The
Republicans supported a wide range of ideas from liberal democracy to anarchy. The
Nationalists supported anti clericalism and anti communism. They wanted to keep
Spain united and feared separatism. These differences in ideologies were a major

opportunity for the United States to increase the supply of available crude oil by

(Dickinson) Even with advanced technology at our fingertips, there is the potential
for errors which could lead to oil spills. If a spill occurred in this region, the effects
could be detrimental to the ocean. Oil and gas industries have plenty of experience
and history of preventing oil spills, but they have little experience in containing
and cleaning up oil spills ( Oil ). With the possibility of polluting the water, the plan
for Arctic drilling loses the votes of all environmentalists, a group that is not to be
trifled with. If authorization to drill in this region relied upon the approval of the
environmentalists, it could be nearly impossible because of their strong lobbying
power. The drilling is also viewed as a diversion to the country s real dilemma,
which is its disproportionately high rate of oil use. Americans guzzle up over
twenty five percent of the world s total oil consumption. The United States should
be working on making vehicles more fuel efficient so that a gallon of oil goes a
long way rather than sucking the earth dry of all its oil. This fact, by itself, is seen
as a more pertinent problem on which the country should focus instead of increasing
available production. Another reason against the drilling in the Arctic region is that,
even if the drilling is approved, there may not be as large yield as expected. All the

function the reduction to a minimum of impingements to which the infant must react
with resultant annihilation of personal being (Winnicott, 1960: 47). Furthermore,
Winnicott suggests that the relationship that a child forms with the mother during her
pre kindergarten period results in the child developing a positive internal
environment. This positive internal environment is what makes the child survive
when her external environment changes. This is why the child is able to sense the
loss of a mother, when left in the Kindergarten, and develop a relationship with

While anthropologists have many prominent skills, one of upmost importance is that
of interviewing. With greater attention to interpersonal relationships and
communication, anthropologists are in an excellent position to engage in a
multitude of interview styles, such as unstructured and semi structured interviews
(Schensul and LeCompte 2013). Unstructured interviewing allows for more
flexibility in the number and sequence of questions, as well as for greater freedom
in the respondent s answers. The goal of such interviewing is to elicit open ended
responses that flow more like a conversation; a benefit of this method is the way in
which in builds comfort and rapport with participants who may be beneficial later in

Another key skill anthropologists have developed is the ability to create and
administer meaningful and thoughtful structured surveys. Structured questionnaires, a
form of structured interviewing, are presented in the same manner to each
participant so as to control the input that triggers people s responses, thus allowing
for more reliable comparability (Bernard 2011, 187). Surveys are hardly restricted
to the field of anthropology, as they are immensely beneficial in the process of
describing and generalizing populations and are considered an extremely reliable and
valid methodology. However, anthropologists, as mentioned, are able to use their
skills of observation to create questionnaires that reveal meaningful data in a non
threatening and communicative way. Survey building requires skilled personnel, not
only in design, but also in implementation; there are numerous ways to administer a
survey, be that via telephone, computer, or face to face. While surveys are useful in
producing data useful in statistical analysis, there are drawbacks to this methodology,
especially when considering how the questionnaire is administered, therefore it is
critical to hire and properly train the appropriate staff (Bernard 2011). Nevertheless,
while every methodology is beneficial to research studies, even more so with
anthropologists at the helm, there are of

reciting prayers and reading the Bible were common in schools across the nation.
Children could be excused from this exercise if they were equipped with a note

The biggest motive behind banning is the separation of church and state. Separation
of church and state is the distance between religion and the nation state. This is hard
concept to find a concept to find a fine line between church and state. This can be
resolved by keeping everything completely separate. All church related stuff stays
within church or home and all state stuff is elsewhere. Prayer within ones self is
not banned so there is no need for mandatory prayer especially if there are students
who choose not to pray. They would be singled out due to not participating which is
not fair for them. Prayer within public schools could potentially lead to intolerance
due to religious difference amongst the students that were unaware. This could again
also lead to singling out student also known as ostracized. Public schools were
created for all students and are funded by all taxpayers. With that being said it only
makes sense and is right for the school to stay neutral due to the difference in
religious beliefs between students and taxpayers. Banning school prayer has
prevented many conflicts of within the school system because of different religious

This drawback was addressed by emergence of polycentric and zonal land use
models in the late 1930s and 1940s (Rodrigue, 2015). A model proposed by Hoyt
(1939), based on a study of residential areas of North America, stated that land use
pattern and growth were not sharply defined as concentric circles but rather were
sectors within a circle and major transportation corridors were responsible for
defining these sectors (Rodrigue, 2015). Harris and Ullman (1945) proposed a
model which also stated that cities do not grow around central business district but
rather develop as nodes that differentiate and are further specialized based on
factors such as accessibility, proximity interactions with other similar or different
areas, as well as location suitability based on price, rent and so on (Rodrigue, 2015).
Following these concepts of land use and urban growth, hybrid models, such as that
of Isard (1955), were developed in the latter half of the 1950. These models
amalgamated the behaviors of various concentric, sector, and nuclei models into one
model to explain land use change and urban growth (Rodrigue, 2015). The limitations
of these traditional models have been their static and linear nature, which made it
difficult for these models to encompass and generate certain parameters such as
complex surface features, as well as their focus on mostly large geographic units such
as administrative regions, that provided insufficient spatial information for setting up
detailed land use and growth models (Qi,
40. Fitna Bibliography
This article talks about the backlash a video uploaded to YouTube called Fitna by
Geert Wilders got in 2008 (pg. 111). Wilder made the video to defend his argument
that Islam is dangerous and that Muslim people would be a threat to the Netherlands.
It showed woman being mutilated, hurt woman included a veiled beheaded woman
and woman being threatened with guns. It showed radical Muslimmen giving hate
speeches and being generally threatening (pg. 112). The video was clearly for fear
mongering purposes. After the video was posted to YouTube, many people uploaded
videos speaking out against the message of the video (pg. 115). This article focused
on the woman who spoke out against this video, especially Muslim woman (pg. 117).

Purchasing Ethics
Scenario 1
1.) What should Bryan do about the clock?
Bryan should explain to his wife Nina what could happen if his boss found out about
the clock. He should explain the ethics policy set in place at his job and that he could
lose his job if word got back of them accepting the clock. Finally he should explain to
her that he is looking out for the company s reputation as well and wants to behave in
an ethical manner. Stressing the fact that ethical buyers do not accept outside gifts or
favors that violate their firm s ethics policy ( Handfield, Giunipero, Monczka, ...

Finally he may have even thought that Bryan would be easily influenced by thinking
no one would find out with him using the method that he did to get the clock to him.
4.) Does the mere act of sending the clock to Bryan mean that Mr. McEnroe is an
unethical salesperson? I would definitely say yes the mere act presents him as an
unethical salesperson. To me it s like a person trying to rob a bank but getting
caught before actually getting away with anything. It s considered attempted
robbery because there was an attempt to commit a crime. Same goes for Mr.
McEnroe in this case. He attempted to do something unethical therefore to me he
would be categorized as an unethical salesperson due to his actions. The act was
already unethical but he took it even a step further towards being unethical by going
to great links to cover his trail .
Scenario 4 1.) What does the Institute of Supply Management code of ethics say about
financial conflicts of interest?
When a buyer awards business to a supplier because the buyer, the buyer s family, or
relatives of the buyer have a direct financial interest in a supplier, this is considered a
major unethical practice (Handfield, Giunipero, Monczka, amp; Patterson, 2011). The
ISM stresses the importance of making sure that a company avoids financial conflicts
of interest at all cost. Even though a conflict may not technically exist, supply
management professionals must
42. Essay on Treatment of Women in Jack Kerouacв
Ђ™s On
The Road
The Treatment of Women in On The Road
The women in Jack Kerouac s On The Road were, it seems, not afforded the same
depth in character which the author gave the men. The treatment of the women
characters in both word and action by Sal and Dean seems to show that women could
only be a virgin/mother figure or a whore. Throughout the novel there are many
instances in which women and their feelings or actions are either referred to
flippantly or blatantly degraded. It can be said, however, that Sal (Kerouac) did not
necessarily agree with this narrow female identity, and there is evidence to support
this claim. The novel also shows though that Sal did participate in this male forced
female stereotyping whether he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, in consequence, there are many instances of the diminishment of the female
identity. These can be seen in the novels treatment of the female characters like
Marylou, Sal s Aunt, and Terry. Marylou is repeatedly talked about, not talked to.
In the part in which Dean wishes Sal to sleep with Marylou the only dialogue that
goes on is either Sal s or Dean s. Marylou has no lines. All she really has is a little
go ahead . That is all and that really does not even imply cooperation; only coercion
like go ahead and You do Your thing to me . Dean is flippantly wanting Marylou to
sleep with his friend with little regard to anything she feels. She is a women, and,
what is more to Dean she is a whore so of course she will sleep with Sal. To Sal s
credit though he does ask what she wants or thinks from the start but this sudden
care seems to arise due to his own nervousness and insecurities not any kind of
genuine feeling for Marylou. Her identity as seen through the eyes of men would
fall into the whore stereotype of women. This is the exact opposite from Sal s
Aunt. The most apparent treatment of Sal s Aunt as something less than an equal
comes at the end of part one. Sal has just returned from his first trip west. He is
tired. He has been starving for three days now and of course eats everything in the
house. Then his Aunt s few extensive lines in the entire novel occur, and in a
decidedly motherly fashion she says Poor little Salvatore . She has fulfilled Sal s
43. Authority In Ayn Rand s Anthem
It has become blatantly obvious that history repeats itself similar events reoccur
and have nearly identical outcomes. The rise and fall of civilization comes as the
ocean, rising to its highest point and then falling down to its knees but only to find
itself climbing back up again. The book Anthem shows the extent a government and
its citizens are willing to go to preserve the idea of a perfect society. But with this
great society come sacrifices and challenges the people must find ways to accept,
examples are, having complete trust in authority figures, the idea that the group as a
whole is more important, and they must accept that there is only one way to achieve
this perfect society. Through fear and propaganda, the citizens begin to have a closed
mind and only see what they are told to see and question nothing.... Show more

Through this trust people will become very obedient and will feed into any idea
that authority provides good or bad. PhD Candidate Sarda Joshi explains, If
complying with a request is viewed as the correct thing to do; people are more
likely to comply. Equality 7 2521 accepts this unfair job of street sweeper simply
because he trusts that his brothers will always have the best interest for the group
as a whole, and if it means he must accept this sacrifice he will. Growing up in a
society that is completely based around order and government control, it is very easy
for one to become dependent on government. From birth citizens are in The House of
the Infants, from there they are moved to House of the Students, and here they are
taught that thinking or doing anything for ones self is a sin. Through strict
controlling and order the people have learned to accept that the government knows
what is best entirely because they have never been exposed to anything besides this
way of
44. Comparison Of Escapism In Cathedral By Raymond Carver
Author Mandy Len Catron once said, [l]ove didn t happen to us. We re in love
because we each made the choice to be . While Raymond Carver frequently
illustrated alcohol and relationships in his stories, it was never in a positive light.
Perhaps that was due to his work being a written reflection of life as he knows it.
When reading Carver s stories, it becomes evident the characters made the conscious
decision not to loveor be in love as did Carver. In Popular Mechanics , a short story
written by Carver, the readers are immediately presented with a couple in the
middle of a break up that results in the male partner, now ex partner s, relocation.
As the male partner prepares his belongings as well as himself to leave, him and his
female counterpart engage in a very physical fight where pushing, shoving, cursing,
and even tug of war, with their baby as the rope, takes place. The story concludes
with not only a split of the couple, but the baby as well. It is apparent the couple
displayed in Popular Mechanics engaged in a very unhealthy, unstable relationship
that lacked compromise. Unlike the couple in Popular Mechanics , the couple in
Cathedral is not violent, but full of guilted compromise and jealousy as well as the
use of forms of escapism. In Cathedral , a second short story by Carver, a couple
has a disagreement over the wife s male friend, a blind man named Robert,
temporarily staying at their house. The husband is not a fan of blind people nor is
he a fan of the fact Robert and his wife have a long history, romantic or not,
together. Despite the husband s feelings, he is guilted into allowing her to have
Robert over. The two men bond over scotch and a television show about cathedrals.
Throughout the story it is evident the couple lacks trust in one another as well as
lacking an open mind. It is no surprise Carver believes marriageputs an end to a
relationship having assumed it will always bring up new disagreements and force
compromises as well as the occasional inability to reach a compromise; however, his
belief is also a reflection of life as he knew it. While most people view marriage as
the beginning of a great life ahead of them, Carver deemed it the end of it. Marriage

Many celebrities have siblings. Some act together, some sing together, some come
in pairs. However, there is one celebrity in particular whose sibling does not act
with her, sing with her, and they don t come in a pair. Regardless of this dynamic,
this sibling is put on display, judged, and criticized. Many people watch Noah Cyrus

Noah Cyrus is the next Miley. They wait for Noah to display outrageous behavior,
to wear scantily clothing, and to stick her tongue out while twerking. To some, Noah

When you peruse her social media accounts, like with all celebrities, you will see
this. Noah spends her free time with family and friends (not doing anything
considered bad ). She shows that family and friends are the most important
components in a young girl s life. Through the way she spends her free time, Noah
proves that the love and support one receives from family and friends is all one
needs to survive in life. Noah is also the ultimate teenage fangirl. She fangirls over
American Horror Story and its actor, Evan Peters. Noah s Instagram is a shrine to
Evan when AHS seasons begin. Noah has an immense love for music. She
obsesses over Lana Del Rey and bands similar to Lana s style of music. Similar to
many teenage girls, Noah expresses herself through her unique style. Noah has
days where she feels like she s on top of the world, and days where the world seems
to be crumbling down around her (missing her friends). Noah even has the
occasional boy problem. Many teenagers experience this type of life (more girls
than boys, sometimes) and they display it all on social media. Noah Cyrus is a
typical teenage girl. She is not going through a partying phase, she is not engaging
in inappropriate behavior that will cause her to be on the front of every tabloid
magazine, she is not making bad choices, and she is not the next Miley. Noah is
going through a stage, however. That stage is
46. Gays And Homosexuality
Throughout history, people who identified as homosexual have experienced many
obstacles such as discrimination, and abuse. It has required many protests, riots and
even acts of violence for them to be at the point where they are today. Although it
has taken many years for the acceptance of homosexuality in society, we now live in
a world where gays and lesbians are equally integrated. Those who pushed for the
advancement of gayand lesbian rights were successful because gays and lesbians are
now able to be legally married.
In history being homosexuality was taboo and uncommon; homosexuality was
known as a mental illness. Homosexuals weren t able to publicly be with a person of
the same sex. People who were homosexual have had to ... Show more content on

Through the hardships that gays and lesbians have had to face The gay rights
movement began. these movements are the reason why gays and lesbians are
equally accepted in society. During the time of the civil rights movements where
people were trying to get social reform, being gay was basically the new black.
Inspired by the African American civil rights movement, homosexuals began to
organize themselves and fight for the equality and justice they did not have yet.
(The history of gay rights Minh T. Nguyen) The Stonewall uprising in 1969 was a
watershed moment in gay pride when homosexuals fought against police who
raided their street bar. The uprising at Stonewall represented power, the people were
tired of being ridiculed for being who they are so they resisted. The crowd began to
get out of hand, eye witnesses said. Then, without warning, Queen Power exploded
with all the fury of a gay atomic bomb. (Jerry Lisker) after years of unfair treatment,
the homosexual community Sought the opportunity to stand up for themselves. The
violence and attention that the Stonewall uprising brought would be one of the main
reasons why homosexuality is now legal and mostly accepted. Although the
Stonewall uprising is one of the most recognized movements regarding gay rights it
is not the only one. On June 27, 1970, The first gay pride parades were held on the
