Enzyme Lab Report

Bio 1LA, Monday 4 7pm
Lab 5 Introduction: Enzymes
Question #1: How does the concentration of substrate affect the reaction rate?
1. If the amount of concentration of substrate is increased, the reaction rate will be also be increased.
2. Enzymes are used to regulate the rate of certain reactions without being chemically altered by the
reaction itself. After each reaction process, the enzymes will separate from the product and can
continue to be reused over and over again to catalyze other reactions. The reaction rate of enzymes
will increase significantly if the concentration of substrate is increased because a higher concentration
of substrate will allow enzymes bind to substrate particles more rapidly. ... Show more content on

As mentioned in question two, pH is another important factor regarding how active an enzyme could
be. Although not all enzymes have the same optical pH levels, a majority of enzymes work the most
effectively when the pH of their environment is between six and eight. If most enzymes are put in
more acidic or alkaline environment, the enzymes would no longer function and would be irreversibly
damaged. For example, the enzymes would not form the proper shape to bond with the substrates or
they would not be able to bond with the substrates. As a result, the imbalance of the pH level would
inhibit the rate of reaction since reactions would no longer be able to

A Thirst For Evil In Cholly Breedlove
The thirst for evil that Cholly Breedlove obtains in his adolescent life at the hand of Blue Jack, and the
hatred towards women he gains in his teenage years from Darlene, come together later in his adult life,
and lead up to Cholly raping his daughter, Pecola. A thirst for evil held by Cholly Breedlove forms
when he and Blue Jack ate the heart of a watermelon at a Fourth of July picnic, at which Cholly
witnesses a demonic scene making Cholly prefer the devil over God. Cholly, sitting on the ground at
the picnic, looks up to a man holding a watermelon above his head, and thinks to himself, It must be
the devil who looks like that holding the world in his hands, ready to dash it to the ground and spill the
red guts so niggers could eat the sweet, warm insides. If the devil did look like that, Cholly preferred

Sigmund Freud s Psychodynamic Theory and Crime
Psychodynamic (Psychoanalytical) theory was developed by Sigmund Freud in the late 1800 s and has
gained increasing popularity in the history of criminality (Siegel, 2005). Freud believed that every
individual carries [the] residue of the most significant emotional attachments of our childhood, which
then guides our future interpersonal relationships (Siegel). Freud theorized that the personality is a
three part structure made up of the id, ego, and super ego. These three components work together in
creating a behavior. The id creates the demands, the ego put the demands created by id into a larger
context using reality, and finally the superego suppresses the id and attempts to make the ego behave
morally, rather than realistically. Psychodynamic theory is significant to criminology because it
explains criminal or abnormal behavior is the result of irregular development of the psyche. The id is
driven by the pleasure principle, which seeks immediate gratification of all needs, desires, and urges.
The pleasure principle that drives the id strives to fulfill our most basic needs and primitive urges,
such as hunger, thirst, emotions, and sex. When one or more of these needs or urges are not met, the
result is a state of anxiety or stress. It is important to note that during infancy children are ruled
entirely by the id, and as they age the other components of personality develop, allowing us to control
the demands of the id and behave in socially acceptable ways (Cherry,

George Clooney s Good Night And Good Luck
Good Night, and Good Luck is George Clooney s warning to today s post 9/11 YouTube culture that
civil liberties and rights can slip away with mass hysteria
(Caulfield, 2007).
George Clooney s Good Night, and Good Luck (2005) is a huge alert and warning to todays post
terrorist attack (of the Twin Towers in 2001) society, in which civil liberties and human rights of each
and any person can slip away as an effect of mass hysteria. The core of Clooney s approach is the idea
that sometimes journalists need to go beyond simple and exact reporting and offer some more in depth

Mass hysteria is defined as an imagined or assumed threat that causes physical symptoms among a
large number of people. It s a fear that grips a large group of people because of a potential danger to
the well being of their society. This is a short term event that may or may not have one specific cause
and sometimes, there is no real explanation for why it happens; it just does (Study.com, 2015). In
particular, the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers created an enormous amount of hysteria in the
United States and around the world. Shortly after the incident, the whole world had come to know
about the terrible tragedy; it had spread across to every nation. This occurrence led to a crazed
population with fear and paranoia running rampant through their minds. America, as well as other
countries, fell into such a state of paranoia and fear of more terrorist attacks that their trust started to
shatter. They began to crack down in airports with security searches, looking for in particular, people
with Middle Eastern features, for the possibility that they were terrorists. As a result of the Twin
Towers incident, countries all around the world became frightful of what could possibly happen to

St. Ambrose Research Paper
When he was 33, Saint Ambrose was living a rich life. He was a successful lawyer and governor.
However, when the bishop of Milan died, Ambrose went to go calm the people. The people started
chanting, Ambrose for bishop! Ambrose did not want to give up his career for the life threatening
occupation (St. Ambrose par. 5) of being bishop, so he fled. He went to the emperor, but the emperor
said that he was right for the job. Once he took up the position, Ambrose gave away his property and
learned Scripture and theology. Ambrose used his skills as a lawyer and orator to fight the Arians in
church, court, senate, and even the emperor s own family. (St. Ambrose par. 7) Although his
stubbornness originally made him deny the job. It was his stubbornness that also made him a strong
bishop. (St. Ambrose par.1 7)
One of Saint Ambrose s famous quotes is A kindness received should be returned with a freer hand.
He said this because he was living in a time when people were not treated kindly. Saint Ambrose
believed in human kindness and equality. These are some qualities that make Saint Ambrose a saint.
Saint Ambrose was a good man who calmed the people and settled arguments. Saint Ambrose is a

Summary Of Post American World
What makes the book, Post American World, by Fareed Zakaria so interesting is the fact that many of
the points made about the decline of America and what needs to be changed is the direct commotion
of the current political campaigns. As a young growing male developing my understanding of how the
country and countries work and interact the idea of the Post American World, allowed me to
understand why the election this year is so different compared to the past. Although I was not as
present in the past election, the commotion that has been caused to this year has brought more
attention to me and the world than it has before. Within the book the idea that the U.S. has been doing
so well and has created the best of the best things, times have started

H. J Mccloskey Argument
Eighteenth century Enlightenment philosophers believed that reason and science were the foundation
of truth; thereby, tradition, faith, and superstition were becoming obsolete. They felt they were coming
out of the darkness of medieval religion and into the light of reason. However, rather than discovering
true liberation after killing God, they had only succeeded in orphaning themselves (Craig, 2008. P.
71). This dissertation will focus on the article On Being an Atheist written by Australian philosopher
H.J. McCloskey in 1968. The purpose of his article was to establish, what he referred to as proofs
against the existence of God.
It is interesting that McCloskey refers to his grounds for evidence as proofs for according to Mark
Foreman, who is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Liberty University, proof carries with it
connotations of certainty that actually originate from the field of mathematics and is not meant to be
used regarding philosophical arguments pertaining to the existence of God. Theists cannot prove the
existence of God 100%; ergo, the naturalists and atheists cannot provide 100% proof that God does
not exist.
Arguments are defeasible, they are not incorrigible, thus defeaters can be presented; therefore, the
cumulative case approach of combining a number of arguments to make the case is the best ... Show

For example, inanimate objects such as pencil sharpeners, toaster ovens, and iPhone are intelligently
designed; however, the object is not intelligent itself. The fine tuning argument is the strongest
teleological argument; ergo, matter is so finely tuned for life possessing the innate capacity to appear
on this planet. According to Dr. James Hannam, atheists have yet to refute the Fine Tuning argument
to Design, and therefore we have reason to believe there was a divine creator

Comparison Of Le Bain And Madame X
A clear similarity between Le Bain and Madame X is how each artist pushed boundaries for their
times. Both of these paintings were done in the 19th Century, but are around twenty years apart. The
way these paintings push boundaries is in how they show modernism and truth, like Balzac discusses
in the reading in creating a masterpiece. One is able to see in Le Bain the nude woman with her
clothes spread on the ground, which resemble clothes modern women were wearing at the time. At
this point in time many believed it was appropriate for nudes to be in paintings if they resembled a god
or goddess. In this painting it is clear one is viewing neither a god nor goddess. As we discussed in
class the emperor felt this painting was immoral because

Philosophy And Bertrand Russell s The Nature Of Philosophy
In The Nature of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell, it is said that if the study of philosophy has any
value at all for others than students of philosophy, it must be only indirectly, through its effects upon
the lives of those who study it . As such, the real value of philosophy comes from its study, and this
study should be compulsory in schools. This is due to its teaching of logic, rationality, and critical
thinking. This is also due to the course s teaching of the value of ethics. Finally, philosophy should be
made a compulsory subject as it has benefits that will positively affect a student s performance outside
of high school, in post secondary education and beyond.
The importance of logic and rationality in life should not be understated, and as philosophy teaches
logic to its students, it should thusly be made mandatory. A rather common sentiment is that too many
people are taken advantage of because of their lack of critical thinking, logic and deductive reasoning .
With a prevalence of advertisements and large figures in the media trying to persuade others to believe
them, a mandatory philosophy class would teach students how to effectively apply logic so that they
will no longer be taken advantage of when facing premises in the media and in the world around them
that have less to do with a sound argument and more to do with rhetorical devices. Rick Lewis writes
that philosophy is based upon logic and reasoning, and that learning how to use logic is critical

The Final Solution from Witnesses to the Holocaust
The years of 1941 and 1942 paint a vivid description of ugly, taking place events too hard to take in,
and the death of 6 million innocent people. The Final Solution in an excerpt from Witnesses to the
Holocaust: An Oral History, where Sam Bankhalter and Hinda Kibort detail their horrifying account of
Hitler s rash and day to day life in the Nazi concentration camps where they were imprisoned. The
Final Solution was a plan systematically matriculated by the Nazi to exterminate European Jews by
placing them in work camps designed for certain death.
Sam Bankhalter was just fourteen at the time when he was captured by the Nazis in his native land of
Poland and exiled to Auschwitz. In a detailed account he paints the picture of life as a Jew during
Hitler s fury and the unimaginable accounts of terror that occurred. According to Bankhalter, racism of
European Jews was already occurring in Poland even before Hitler invaded, and their slogan was Jew

Jews to assemble. The Nazi s only gave them about twenty minutes to pack, leaving them time to only
gather the necessities, which would only be stripped from them later. Bankhalter was only in the

Extend School Year
Extend the School Year, Extend Opportunities I m bored. There s nothing to do! These words are
echoed many times during the summer by teenagers and children around America. Hours are wasted
away wandering mindlessly around the house, sitting in front of a television screen, or simply sleeping
to make the time pass by faster. Meanwhile, across the world students are spending their time in
school studying and getting ahead, while America is continually dropping in its rankings. The aches
and pains of boredom during the seemingly endless summer could be put to a stop by simply making
the school year longer. Furthermore, other positive changes would be seen by lengthening the learning
season. By extending both the primary and secondary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Across America, the few schools that have already extended the school year have all reported similar
and positive results. This evidence alone should be enough to change the federal law to increase the
minimum number of days in a school year. Because of the direct relationship shown between the
length of the school year and international academic rankings and the constructive changes seen in
schools in America with longer school years, the ineffective structure of the American school calendar
should be modified as to make the school year longer, helping Americans succeed and compete
globally with other leading countries. Not only is America s diminutive academic school year
restricting the US s global competitiveness, but the structure of the school year is very ineffective,
especially the long summer break. First of all, long summer vacations were not even intended for
today s American society. The original purpose of an extended summer vacation was for children to
help their family tend to their farms in America s past agricultural society. Now that America is no
longer an agricultural society, but rather post industrial, the long vacation is pointless and actually
detrimental (Summer Vacation is No Longer Necessary). Unlike America, most advanced nations have

Treatment of Non-Human Animals
I will argue that Utilitarianism is a reasonable ethical theory to demonstrate we have a duty to accord
moral consideration to sentient beings equally, in this case non human animals. I will illustrate under
Utilitarian criteria, that non human animals are indeed sentient and that it is enough to count for moral
standing. I will defend my argument in examples of practices commonly used in treating animals a
resource, such as for food and in laboratory experiments. This will prove that any action that fails to
treat animals as a being with moral standing violates an animal s right, and therefore is morally
impermissible.
I will begin by showing why Utilitarian Theory justifies my claim in providing a strong argument for
non human animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

sufficient amount of consciousness directed toward our utilitarian calculations. So, humans and most
non human animals (who we have proved to have interests) are to be taken into account. Well, some
might question whose sentience matters. It is argued non human animals interests are not as intense as
our own. Because we are self conscious and have the ability to anticipate and remember our pain with
greater fidelity than animals, it is possible a human s pain has greater weight than an animal s. But, on
the other hand, our rationality allows us to distance ourselves from pain and give it purpose, like a flu
shot for example, for animals cannot do so. I will conclude this thought by saying in most cases
involving animals, human interests aren t at stake, so the right course of action is easy to judge.
In this next section, I will demonstrate how a non humans sentience counts as having moral
consideration. First, let s look at the requirements for moral consideration. Beyond sentience, moral
consideration is argued to extend to rationality, intelligence or language. I will explain how those
views could be altered. Why is an animal s lack of human levels of rationality and intelligence allow
us to ignore their pain and suffering? If

Persuasive Essay On The Lorax
If things keep going the way they are humans will inevitably destroy the ocean and in doing so destroy
themselves. There need to be more Loraxes. We the people need to work together to minimize and
ultimately stop the production and use of plastics. Driving down the highway, or the gravel road it
doesn t matter I look on either side of the road and what do I see; plastic debris and trash. Someone
had to have thrown it there or maybe it blew out of the back of a trash truck going by but regardless
there it sits until someone picks it up or an animal mistakes it for a meal or a home. When Dr. Suess
wrote The Lorax it was in response to deforestation if he were alive today I think he would make
another version of the Lorax however this time it would be about polluting the ocean. Riding in the
with my cousin once I watched him throw a can out of the window. I can remember getting mad at
him and asking him what he was doing and all he said was, someone else will pick it up, it s not like it
is a big deal. Well at the time I let it go and thought nothing more of it. Time continued on and when I
was in sixth grade my mom and I went to Florida as your driving on a dirt road, how about that drive
through meal bag that your spouse can t know about because you and your supposed to be eating
healthy? Or watched someone else throw that spit bottle out the window? Believe it or not things like
these examples have an impact on the world. We ve all heard the reduce, reuse, recycle but why are
people so adamant about it? Perfect examples of reasons why people do this can be seen in the ocean
ecosystems. More and more of our wastes are ending up in the ocean and harming the animals living
there. Innocent animals that just want to survive and thrive aren t getting the opportunity to try
because of trash and litter that floats and sinks in the ocean. This litter that ends up in the ocean is
consumed by many animals. There are about seven different kinds of sea turtles and the world wild
life organization is working on conservation on five of them. What s happening to all of these turtles?
Due to debris in the ocean the turtle are getting tangled in the six ring bottle or can holders and getting
them stuck around the middle so

Apology By Plato Analysis
Reading Reflection: Plato In one of Plato s works Apology , Socrates attempts to defend himself in
court of law where he is being prosecuted on corrupting the youth. While defending himself, Socrates
also defends his choice of receiving a death penalty, rather then testifying against his beliefs. Although
he makes some very strong and valid arguments, lots of readers would wonder why would such a wise
man choose death over his life. Socrates was a man that was on a mission is search of the truth about
wisdom. As a philosopher he would never settle for one simple answer, he would take every angel of
an argument therefore even a simple idea would be argued until his opponent would be frustrated
enough to quit. During his defense Socrates states, A man who really fights for justice must lead a
private, not a public, life if he is to survive for even a short time (Apology 36). Socrates is arguing that
due to politics corrupt nature, anybody that wants to fight for justice must stay out of the public eye.
To back up his claim, Socrates brings up an example from his past when he served as a member of the
Council, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even today, anybody that has ever been a part of a social group that makes decisions, political or not,
most likely ran into this issue. When Socrates states that a man who really fights for justice must
follow a private life, he implicates that people should make their own decision, based on their own
beliefs, not based on others. Don t just agree with others and make an assumption that they are correct.
Expand your horizons and think outside the box, think about yourself and what you think is right. If
you are positive that you are correct, do not be afraid to speak up and stand up for yourself. However,
at times others attempt to punch those who do not follow along with their agenda. Therefore, most of
the people just go along. Following others is not always the wisest

Barbie Doll Is Bad
An Imperfect Barbie Doll In today s society, there are many people who strive to show that perfection
has never really existed, that each individual woman is beautiful as herself, the way she is, and that no
one is the same. Contemporary culture works to prove the fact that people are all different shapes,
sizes, and colors, and that that s okay. People s differences are what make them all perfect in their
way; likewise, things that may be considered weaknesses and flaws are also inherently our own and
thus part of what makes them who they are. As the years pass more and more people are recognizing
the harmful way that society and particularly modern media impose harmful expectations upon

Marketing Management Strategy of L’oreal Groups
Marketing Management Strategy of L Oreal Groups
Introduction
Many cosmetic brands are popping up recently, perhaps, due to the increasing consumers of products
that beautify and enhance the physical appearance of a person. Even though the market is already full
of the said cosmetic brands, the company L Oreal Groups could still be considered as the leading
supplier of cosmetics and hair color. This study is a brief overview of the marketing concepts and
strategy of the said company. The company profile will be presented to be able to give a clear view of
the market to which the company belongs to. An internal and external (SWOT) analysis of the

The pharmaceutical activities of L Oreal are also handled by Sanofi Aventis. These divisions and
subdivisions ensure the quality that the L Oreal Group offers to its customers. To further add to the
enumerated strengths of the company, L Oreal s advertising strategy also plays a major part to its
growth. Through adapting to the culture of their target market as the main tool of their advertisement,
the Company brought L Oreal products within reach of other women from different parts of the world.
2. Weaknesses
Perhaps one of the weaknesses that a big company faces is the decentralized organizational structure.
This is also part of the difficulties that L Oreal is facing. Due to the many subdivisions of the
Company, there is also the difficulty in the control of L Oreal. This slows down the production of the
Company because of the need of giving reference to the other Board members and directors of the
Company. L Oreal will also have a difficulty in finding out what division is accountable for the
possible pitfalls of the Company. Another weakness that L Oreal faces is their profit. The profit margin
of L Oreal is comparably low than that of the other smaller rivals. While L Oreal projects certain rise
in digits as their profit, the result does not usually meet the expectations (Sang, 2003). Perhaps, this is
also due to the high end advertising and marketing as well as the width of the Company. Finally, the
coordination and the control of the activities

A Comparison Of The Power Of King Henry VII And The Monarchy
Throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in western Europe, the power of monarchies grew
by their own means. The monarchy of Spain, under Ferdinand and Isabella, grew their royal power
considerably by conquering the neighboring regions of Moors, Naples, and Navarre among others,
exercised their power by the Inquisition, and expanded their empire across the Atlantic Ocean to
Mexico and Peru. In difference, King Henry VII in England unified the royal government through
marriage and consolidated the power of the English monarchy through the Court of Star Chamber.
While the two monarchies similarly expanded their kingdom through marriage and found ways to
show the power of their newly unified monarchies, the way in which Spain and England expanded
their power and showed their strength differed, as Spain focus more on their religious and empirical
power while England focused on more on their domestic power and their wealth at this time period.
After a thirty year conflict between the House of York and House of Lancaster from 1455 to 1485,
Henry Tudor who ruled England as Henry VII, was the start of the new royal dynasty which would
bring stability and power back to England. To ensure stability, he married Elizabeth of York, unifying
the House of Lancaster and House of York into one royal family. With no outside claims to the royal
bloodline remaining, Henry VII was able to increase the power and finances of the English monarchy
through various means. With the end

Factory Farming, It Needs to Change Essay
Factory Farming, It Needs to Change! Factory farming is the process of employing abusive practices
that maximize agribusiness profits at the expense of the environment, our communities, animal
welfare, and even our health (Factory Farming). These methods are used across the United States and
have major impacts on not only those consuming the food but the environment as well. Some hold the
position that this method is inhumane and should not be allowed. However, others argue that this
process creates economically cheap food and allows food to be produced at a faster rate. Therefore,
the factory farming industry can improve its conditions in all aspects if it is reformed to successfully

While animal cruelty is the largest issue that arises from factory farming, there are also many other
problems that stem from this type of production such as environmental impacts. With this type of food
production, modern animal agriculture puts an incredible strain on natural resources like land, water,
and fossil fuel (Factory Farming). This is causing non reversible environmental damage such as
contaminating water supplies and producing mass amounts of exhaust due to production. These
practices are going unnoticed by both the government and the companies responsible. Laws and
regulations for the environment are not doing their job and need to be changed in order to save the
resources that future generations have a right to experience. The industry as a whole stand idly by as
they destroy the environment by the practices they perform. This puts a major strain on the fight
against environmental degradation by the lack of regard for conserving what is not the industries to
ruin. While the environment is currently having some major impacts, rural communities are being
equally affected. Some of the impacts that transpire from factory farming include an increase in
respiratory, neurobehavioral, and mental illness among the residents of communities next to factory
farms (Factory Farming). The mass amount production that is being done leads to exhaust fumes
being released into the environment. Another

Environmental Issues Challenging The Clean Water Act Of...
Coastal Area I live less than a mile from the San Francisco Bay and Estuary (SFBay). I wrote about
this bay s environmental issues in the Unit #1 Learning Journal assignment and have decided to use
this opportunity to elaborate on two specific environmental issues challenging the SFBay. To
summarize this ecosystem: It s the largest bay and estuary on the Pacific coast and has been damaged
by industrial activity, starting in 1850 with the Gold Rush and quickly followed by the logging,
railroad and salt pond industries. Its biggest threats are pollution, water diversion and filling in.
Conservation efforts began in 1965 and today the SFBay is collectively overseen by government and
private organizations. Two environmental problems the SFBay faces are mercury contamination and
overfishing. The Clean Water Act lists the SFBay as impaired for mercury. Estimates suggest the bay s
sediment is contaminated with about two hundred metric tons of mercury, much going back to original
Gold Rush. This pollutant has affected SFBay biota resulting in a state issued fish advisory waning not
to eat some common fish such as Striped bass and limited intake of other species (OEHHA, 2011; Ely
Viani, 2010). At the same time humanity was busy cutting down thousand year old redwood trees and
hydraulically destroying the Sierra Mountains, they were also busy pillaging the SFBay for fish,
shellfish and perhaps the unlucky whale pod that happened by. Some species were immediately
depleted and by

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas
Without evil, good would not exist either and that s one of the themes that is explored in The Ones
Who Walk Away From Omelas . In Omelas, every citizen is posed with a moral dilemma in which
they can either succumb to the society s viewpoint or walk away from the city and in my creative
piece, I voice the opinion from a person who left Omelas and explain the reasons of why I left. The
narrative of LeGuin s short story is told in first person, seeming to be just an observer of the city. The
story of Omelas is told without emotion while also void of judgment, which really allows the readers
to form their own objectives. The city is first introduced to its readers as a society that is filled with
only joy, with glimpses of all the cheerful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my creative piece, I was a person who walked away from omelas and in my first paragraph, I
explained to my mom how I made my decision. It is a recall of the day the terms of the city s
happiness were revealed and I decided to that because in LeGuin s story, the actions of the ones who
leave are vaguely explained, but their thought process and reasoning are not. In that paragraph I used
the quotes, even if the child could be released, it would not get much good of its freedom and been
afraid too long ever to be free of fear (LeGuin, 1973) as the way the society s actions are reasoned to a
person by their mom. I thought it emphasized the difference in morality of those who stay and those
who leave. The people in the city constantly dehumanize the child, acting as though he/she is just
another useful tool in their society. While they have very few laws in Omelas, they have a rule
concerning the child. The terms are strict and absolute; there may not even be a kind word spoken to
the child. Furthermore, they kick and stare and even the narrator refers to the child as it . In my
creative piece, I never once called the child, it, to emphasize the difference in which the child is

If the amount of concentration of substrate is increased, the reaction rate will be also be increased. 2. Enzymes are used to regulate the rate of certain reactions without being chemically altered by the reaction itself. After each reaction process, the enzymes will separate from the product and can continue to be reused over and over again to catalyze other reactions. The reaction rate of enzymes will increase significantly if the concentration of substrate is increased because a higher concentration of substrate will allow enzymes bind to substrate particles more rapidly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As mentioned in question two, pH is another important factor regarding how active an enzyme could be. Although not all enzymes have the same optical pH levels, a majority of enzymes work the most effectively when the pH of their environment is between six and eight. If most enzymes are put in more acidic or alkaline environment, the enzymes would no longer function and would be irreversibly damaged. For example, the enzymes would not form the proper shape to bond with the substrates or they would not be able to bond with the substrates. As a result, the imbalance of the pH level would inhibit the rate of reaction since reactions would no longer be able to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Sigmund Freud s Psychodynamic Theory and Crime Psychodynamic (Psychoanalytical) theory was developed by Sigmund Freud in the late 1800 s and has gained increasing popularity in the history of criminality (Siegel, 2005). Freud believed that every individual carries [the] residue of the most significant emotional attachments of our childhood, which then guides our future interpersonal relationships (Siegel). Freud theorized that the personality is a three part structure made up of the id, ego, and super ego. These three components work together in creating a behavior. The id creates the demands, the ego put the demands created by id into a larger context using reality, and finally the superego suppresses the id and attempts to make the ego behave morally, rather than realistically. Psychodynamic theory is significant to criminology because it explains criminal or abnormal behavior is the result of irregular development of the psyche. The id is driven by the pleasure principle, which seeks immediate gratification of all needs, desires, and urges. The pleasure principle that drives the id strives to fulfill our most basic needs and primitive urges, such as hunger, thirst, emotions, and sex. When one or more of these needs or urges are not met, the result is a state of anxiety or stress. It is important to note that during infancy children are ruled entirely by the id, and as they age the other components of personality develop, allowing us to control the demands of the id and behave in socially acceptable ways (Cherry, ... Mass hysteria is defined as an imagined or assumed threat that causes physical symptoms among a large number of people. It s a fear that grips a large group of people because of a potential danger to the well being of their society. This is a short term event that may or may not have one specific cause and sometimes, there is no real explanation for why it happens; it just does (Study.com, 2015). In particular, the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers created an enormous amount of hysteria in the United States and around the world. Shortly after the incident, the whole world had come to know about the terrible tragedy; it had spread across to every nation. This occurrence led to a crazed population with fear and paranoia running rampant through their minds. America, as well as other countries, fell into such a state of paranoia and fear of more terrorist attacks that their trust started to shatter. They began to crack down in airports with security searches, looking for in particular, people with Middle Eastern features, for the possibility that they were terrorists. However, when the bishop of Milan died, Ambrose went to go calm the people. The people started chanting, Ambrose for bishop! Ambrose did not want to give up his career for the life threatening occupation (St. Ambrose par. 5) of being bishop, so he fled. He went to the emperor, but the emperor said that he was right for the job. Once he took up the position, Ambrose gave away his property and learned Scripture and theology. Ambrose used his skills as a lawyer and orator to fight the Arians in church, court, senate, and even the emperor s own family. (St. Ambrose par. 7) Although his stubbornness originally made him deny the job. It was his stubbornness that also made him a strong bishop. (St. Ambrose par.1 7) One of Saint Ambrose s famous quotes is A kindness received should be returned with a freer hand. He said this because he was living in a time when people were not treated kindly. Saint Ambrose believed in human kindness and equality. These are some qualities that make Saint Ambrose a saint. • 11. H. J Mccloskey Argument Eighteenth century Enlightenment philosophers believed that reason and science were the foundation of truth; thereby, tradition, faith, and superstition were becoming obsolete. They felt they were coming out of the darkness of medieval religion and into the light of reason. However, rather than discovering true liberation after killing God, they had only succeeded in orphaning themselves (Craig, 2008. P. 71). This dissertation will focus on the article On Being an Atheist written by Australian philosopher H.J. McCloskey in 1968. The purpose of his article was to establish, what he referred to as proofs against the existence of God. It is interesting that McCloskey refers to his grounds for evidence as proofs for according to Mark Foreman, who is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Liberty University, proof carries with it connotations of certainty that actually originate from the field of mathematics and is not meant to be used regarding philosophical arguments pertaining to the existence of God. Theists cannot prove the existence of God 100%; ergo, the naturalists and atheists cannot provide 100% proof that God does not exist. Arguments are defeasible, they are not incorrigible, thus defeaters can be presented; therefore, the cumulative case approach of combining a number of arguments to make the case is the best ... • 12. Comparison Of Le Bain And Madame X A clear similarity between Le Bain and Madame X is how each artist pushed boundaries for their times. Both of these paintings were done in the 19th Century, but are around twenty years apart. The way these paintings push boundaries is in how they show modernism and truth, like Balzac discusses in the reading in creating a masterpiece. One is able to see in Le Bain the nude woman with her clothes spread on the ground, which resemble clothes modern women were wearing at the time. At this point in time many believed it was appropriate for nudes to be in paintings if they resembled a god or goddess. In this painting it is clear one is viewing neither a god nor goddess. • 14. Philosophy And Bertrand Russell s The Nature Of Philosophy In The Nature of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell, it is said that if the study of philosophy has any value at all for others than students of philosophy, it must be only indirectly, through its effects upon the lives of those who study it . As such, the real value of philosophy comes from its study, and this study should be compulsory in schools. This is due to its teaching of logic, rationality, and critical thinking. This is also due to the course s teaching of the value of ethics. Finally, philosophy should be made a compulsory subject as it has benefits that will positively affect a student s performance outside of high school, in post secondary education and beyond. The importance of logic and rationality in life should not be understated, and as philosophy teaches logic to its students, it should thusly be made mandatory. A rather common sentiment is that too many people are taken advantage of because of their lack of critical thinking, logic and deductive reasoning . With a prevalence of advertisements and large figures in the media trying to persuade others to believe them, a mandatory philosophy class would teach students how to effectively apply logic so that they will no longer be taken advantage of when facing premises in the media and in the world around them that have less to do with a sound argument and more to do with rhetorical devices. Rick Lewis writes that philosophy is based upon logic and reasoning, and that learning how to use logic is critical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Final Solution from Witnesses to the Holocaust The years of 1941 and 1942 paint a vivid description of ugly, taking place events too hard to take in, and the death of 6 million innocent people. The Final Solution in an excerpt from Witnesses to the Holocaust: An Oral History, where Sam Bankhalter and Hinda Kibort detail their horrifying account of Hitler s rash and day to day life in the Nazi concentration camps where they were imprisoned. The Final Solution was a plan systematically matriculated by the Nazi to exterminate European Jews by placing them in work camps designed for certain death. Sam Bankhalter was just fourteen at the time when he was captured by the Nazis in his native land of Poland and exiled to Auschwitz. In a detailed account he paints the picture of life as a Jew during Hitler s fury and the unimaginable accounts of terror that occurred. According to Bankhalter, racism of European Jews was already occurring in Poland even before Hitler invaded, and their slogan was Jew get out of here and go to Palestine. He accounts of being beaten and spit on the school grounds on a daily basis, long before Hitler invaded. Bankhalter describes his journey to the ghetto as laced with barbed wire and Nazi mocking Jews cutting off men s beards and beating them as they yelled at the Jews to assemble. The Nazi s only gave them about twenty minutes to pack, leaving them time to only gather the necessities, which would only be stripped from them later. Hours are wasted away wandering mindlessly around the house, sitting in front of a television screen, or simply sleeping to make the time pass by faster. Meanwhile, across the world students are spending their time in school studying and getting ahead, while America is continually dropping in its rankings. Across America, the few schools that have already extended the school year have all reported similar and positive results. This evidence alone should be enough to change the federal law to increase the minimum number of days in a school year. Because of the direct relationship shown between the length of the school year and international academic rankings and the constructive changes seen in schools in America with longer school years, the ineffective structure of the American school calendar should be modified as to make the school year longer, helping Americans succeed and compete globally with other leading countries. Not only is America s diminutive academic school year restricting the US s global competitiveness, but the structure of the school year is very ineffective, especially the long summer break. First of all, long summer vacations were not even intended for today s American society. The original purpose of an extended summer vacation was for children to help their family tend to their farms in America s past agricultural society. Now that America is no longer an agricultural society, but rather post industrial, the long vacation is pointless and actually detrimental (Summer Vacation is No Longer Necessary). • 21. Treatment of Non-Human Animals I will argue that Utilitarianism is a reasonable ethical theory to demonstrate we have a duty to accord moral consideration to sentient beings equally, in this case non human animals. I will illustrate under Utilitarian criteria, that non human animals are indeed sentient and that it is enough to count for moral standing. I will defend my argument in examples of practices commonly used in treating animals a resource, such as for food and in laboratory experiments. This will prove that any action that fails to treat animals as a being with moral standing violates an animal s right, and therefore is morally impermissible. I will begin by showing why Utilitarian Theory justifies my claim in providing a strong argument for non human animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now at this point, I should consider what beings are sentient. According to Peter Singer, it s all and only vertebrate animals who are sentient. It is useless to think oysters or rocks or trees have a sufficient amount of consciousness directed toward our utilitarian calculations. So, humans and most non human animals (who we have proved to have interests) are to be taken into account. Well, some might question whose sentience matters. It is argued non human animals interests are not as intense as our own. Because we are self conscious and have the ability to anticipate and remember our pain with greater fidelity than animals, it is possible a human s pain has greater weight than an animal s. But, on the other hand, our rationality allows us to distance ourselves from pain and give it purpose, like a flu shot for example, for animals cannot do so. I will conclude this thought by saying in most cases involving animals, human interests aren t at stake, so the right course of action is easy to judge. In this next section, I will demonstrate how a non humans sentience counts as having moral consideration. First, let s look at the requirements for moral consideration. Beyond sentience, moral consideration is argued to extend to rationality, intelligence or language. I will explain how those views could be altered. Why is an animal s lack of human levels of rationality and intelligence allow us to ignore their pain and suffering? If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Persuasive Essay On The Lorax If things keep going the way they are humans will inevitably destroy the ocean and in doing so destroy themselves. There need to be more Loraxes. We the people need to work together to minimize and ultimately stop the production and use of plastics. Driving down the highway, or the gravel road it doesn t matter I look on either side of the road and what do I see; plastic debris and trash. Someone had to have thrown it there or maybe it blew out of the back of a trash truck going by but regardless there it sits until someone picks it up or an animal mistakes it for a meal or a home. When Dr. Suess wrote The Lorax it was in response to deforestation if he were alive today I think he would make another version of the Lorax however this time it would be about polluting the ocean. Riding in the with my cousin once I watched him throw a can out of the window. I can remember getting mad at him and asking him what he was doing and all he said was, someone else will pick it up, it s not like it is a big deal. Well at the time I let it go and thought nothing more of it. Time continued on and when I was in sixth grade my mom and I went to Florida as your driving on a dirt road, how about that drive through meal bag that your spouse can t know about because you and your supposed to be eating healthy? Or watched someone else throw that spit bottle out the window? Believe it or not things like these examples have an impact on the world. We ve all heard the reduce, reuse, recycle but why are people so adamant about it? Perfect examples of reasons why people do this can be seen in the ocean ecosystems. More and more of our wastes are ending up in the ocean and harming the animals living there. Innocent animals that just want to survive and thrive aren t getting the opportunity to try because of trash and litter that floats and sinks in the ocean. This litter that ends up in the ocean is consumed by many animals. • 28. A Comparison Of The Power Of King Henry VII And The Monarchy Throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in western Europe, the power of monarchies grew by their own means. The monarchy of Spain, under Ferdinand and Isabella, grew their royal power considerably by conquering the neighboring regions of Moors, Naples, and Navarre among others, exercised their power by the Inquisition, and expanded their empire across the Atlantic Ocean to Mexico and Peru. In difference, King Henry VII in England unified the royal government through marriage and consolidated the power of the English monarchy through the Court of Star Chamber. While the two monarchies similarly expanded their kingdom through marriage and found ways to show the power of their newly unified monarchies, the way in which Spain and England expanded their power and showed their strength differed, as Spain focus more on their religious and empirical power while England focused on more on their domestic power and their wealth at this time period. I wrote about this bay s environmental issues in the Unit #1 Learning Journal assignment and have decided to use this opportunity to elaborate on two specific environmental issues challenging the SFBay. To summarize this ecosystem: It s the largest bay and estuary on the Pacific coast and has been damaged by industrial activity, starting in 1850 with the Gold Rush and quickly followed by the logging, railroad and salt pond industries. Its biggest threats are pollution, water diversion and filling in. Conservation efforts began in 1965 and today the SFBay is collectively overseen by government and private organizations. Two environmental problems the SFBay faces are mercury contamination and overfishing. The Clean Water Act lists the SFBay as impaired for mercury. Estimates suggest the bay s sediment is contaminated with about two hundred metric tons of mercury, much going back to original Gold Rush. This pollutant has affected SFBay biota resulting in a state issued fish advisory waning not to eat some common fish such as Striped bass and limited intake of other species (OEHHA, 2011; Ely Viani, 2010).
