• A panel discussion is designed to provide an
opportunity for a group to hear several people
knowledgeable about the specific issues or
topics present information and discuss
personal views
Responsibilities of Instructor
1. Identify or help participants identify
issues, topics upon which to base a panel
discussion
1. Insure all panelist & moderator know the
procedure ofdiscussion in advance
3. Assist panelist in preparation by
directing various materials etc.
4.Help participants understand need for fair
procedure in discussing e.g.: the freedom to
discuss an issue, obligation to listen others
point, courteous discussion
How to conduct Panel
Discussion
• Invite experts to become panelist:
 Choose knowledgeable, well educated experts or
individuals involved in focus of panel discussion
 Invite panelist 3 weeks prior to discussion
• Select and invite a moderator:
Choose a moderator who doesn’t have conflict
of interest with subject matter
• Determine Rules for the panel
discussion
Establish guidelines for the discussion –Time
lines , open discussion
Open discussion is question & conversation
between the panelist based on the comments
Create time limit for limited discussion

Each panelist be allowed certain time to
answer each question as asked by moderator.
Also time may be given after panel discussion
to audience member to ask questions.

Create more question bank
• Present and Introduce the panelist at
the beginning of discussion
Introduce the moderator and the format and
rule
• Conduct the discussion as planned
The moderator should ask the questions and
coordinate the discussion as planned
• Conclude the panel discussion
 With a summary and closing remarks
The moderator should thank the audience &
panelist
How to Proceed
1.Identify or help participants-an issue or topic
that involves important conflict in values or
interest
• It can be hypothetical incident, student
experience, an actual case etc.
2. Select panelist who are well informed about
issues and topic
• Select moderator
3. Indicate to panelists the objectives and allow
panelist time to prepare for the discussion
 15 to 20 min or some weeks are given
4. Decide format for the panel discussion:
The leader or moderator introduces the topic and
panelists present opinion regarding the issues or
topic for set amt of time
The panelist discuss with each other by question or
by reacting to the views and opinion of others.
The moderator closes the discussion and provides a
summary of panel presentation and discussion
The moderator calls for forum period where
audience ask the panel members questions or
by voicing their view and opinion
