PANEL DISCUSSION

INTRODUCTION
• It’s a type of method of teaching in which discussion
technique of learning is based on the modern theory
of organization.
• The assumption of this theory is that every member
of the organization has the capacity to initiate and
solve the problem and brings certain attitudes and
values to the organization.
• This interaction technique is the most appropriate in
democratic way of life.
DEFINITION
Panel discussion is a discussion in which a few
persons carry on a conversation in front of an
audience. When the group is too large to work
effectively through the usual round table procedure.
Panel discussion is a socialized group conversation in
which different points of view are presented. It is not
an ordinary conversation nor a debate, but a group
consideration of a topic in which there is a different
opinion. It is handled intelligently and creatively, the
panel stimulates thought and discussion and clarifies
thinking.
PURPOSE
To re produce the features for the benefit of a large
group
It is a socialized group conversation in which
different points of view are presented
When handled intelligently and creatively, the panel
stimulates thought and discussion and clarifies
thinking. Because several people engage in a free
exchange of opinions.
The panel influences the audience to an open minded
attitude and respect for the option of others.
The quick exchange of facts, opinion and plans tends
to develop more critical attitude and better judgment.
It is helpful to stimulate discussion encouraging
thinking and developing group opinion.
CHARECTERISTICS OF PANEL
DISCUSSION
The following are the main characteristics of panel discussion:
• It is used at college and university level to organize the
teaching at reflective level
• It develops the ability of problem solving
• It provides the opportunities to understand the problem and
theme of discussion
• It develops the right type of attitude and ability to
tolerate anti ideas of others
• It develops the ability of presentation of theme and
giving their point of view logically
• It develops the ability to creative thinking and
criticize the theme
• It develops the manners of putting questions and
answering questions
TYPES OF PANEL
DISCUSSION
The group discussion is
organized in different forms for
different levels, different
purposes and for different
themes. It may be two types:-
1. Public panel discussion
2. Educational panel
discussion
Public panel discussion
This type of panel discussions are organized for
the common men problem
Objectives of public panel discussion
• To provide factual information regarding
current problem
• To determine the social values
• To recreate the common men
• The public panel discussions are organized in
Television program.
• The current problem:- Educated
unemployment, annual budget, increase in
prize of things, unemployment, rape
cases…etc…
Educational panel discussion
It is used in educational institutions to provide factual and
conceptual knowledge and clarification of certain theories and
principles
Objectives
• To provide factual information and conceptual knowledge
• To give awareness of theories and principle
• To provide solution of certain problem
• This type of panel discussions is very useful but they are not
used in any institution even at higher level. The conferences,
seminar, symposium and workshop are commonly
organized.
Techniques of panel
discussions
A panel discussion consists of:-
• The members of the panel
(panelists)
• The chairman (leader)
• The audience
Members of panel/panelist
• The panel discussion consists of 6 – 8 members who carry
on a guided and informal discussion before an audience.
• The members seated in a semicircle facing the audience
• The members of the panel should be quick thinkers and
facile talker, represents different points of view. The
panelists must have mastery on the theme.
• The primary function of
the members should
occupy approximately two
third of the allotted time.
The secondary function of
the panel is to answer the
question from the
audience.
The Chairman
• The chairman should be selected carefully, because the
success of the panel will be depend on her leadership
• S/he should be a person with wide mental flexibility who
has a sense of fair play and is able to determine the
relevance of remarks as they made.
• The chairman must keep the discussion to the subject and
see that all the members have an equal opportunity to
express their views.
• The chairman begins the
panel discussion by
exploring the whole
proceeding. The members
of the panel are introduced
by name and background of
experience with academic
qualifications
• The topic is announced, the
limits of discussion are
stated
• Encourages expression of
difference of opinion
• The chairman may start the procedure by making a
comment, or directing question to any particular
person, but do not contribute any idea after that she
keeps the conversation to the topic
• Organize the discussion with occasional
summaries.
• A general summary before
discussion is opened to the
audience
The Audience
After the panel discussion, the audience
is allotted to put questions and seek
clarification. They can present their
point of view and their experiences
regarding the theme or problem. The
panelists attempt to answer the questions
of the audience. At the end of discussion
the chairman summaries the discussion
and present her point of view and
express the thanks to panelists and
audience
SUGGESTIONS FOR ORGANIZING
PANEL DISCUSSION
The following suggestions should be taken to organize
effective panel discussion:
• There should be rehearsal before the actual panel discussion
• The Chairman should be matured person and have the full
understanding of theme or problem. He should have control
over the situation
• The seating arrangements for panelists and audience
should be such that one should be of equal distance,
and they can observe each other
• The chairman should encourage the discussion on the
point which may lead to constructive aspects of the
problem. He should encourage the constructive
discussion among panelists and audience.
Advantages
• This technique encourages social learning
• The higher cognitive and affective objectives are achieved
• It is used to develop the ability of problem solving and
logical thinking
• It develops the interests and right type of attitude towards
problem
• It develops capacity to respects other’s ideas and feeling of
tolerance
• It provides the opportunities of assimilation of theme and
content.
LIMITATIONS OF PANEL
DISCUSSION
The followings are the limitations of panel discussion:
• There are chances to deviate from the theme at time of
discussion hence the purpose the panel discussion is not
achieved
• Some members dominate the discussion and not provide
the opportunities to participate others in discussion
• There is a possibility to split the group in to two sub
groups i.e for against the theme, it does not maintain the
conductive situation of learning
• If panelists belong to different groups, it may not create
appropriate learning situations
CONCLUSION
There are two types; they are public and
educational panel discussion. The
participants are members/panelist,
chairperson and audience. The panel
discussion helps to solve problems,
creative thinking, criticize the theme;
also get the ability to putting questions
and answering questions.

INTRODUCTION • It’s a type of method of teaching in which discussion technique of learning is based on the modern theory of organization. • The assumption of this theory is that every member of the organization has the capacity to initiate and solve the problem and brings certain attitudes and values to the organization.
  • 3. • This interaction technique is the most appropriate in democratic way of life.
  • 4. DEFINITION Panel discussion is a discussion in which a few persons carry on a conversation in front of an audience. When the group is too large to work effectively through the usual round table procedure. Panel discussion is a socialized group conversation in which different points of view are presented. It is not an ordinary conversation nor a debate, but a group consideration of a topic in which there is a different opinion. It is handled intelligently and creatively, the panel stimulates thought and discussion and clarifies thinking.

  • 6. When handled intelligently and creatively, the panel stimulates thought and discussion and clarifies thinking. Because several people engage in a free exchange of opinions. The panel influences the audience to an open minded attitude and respect for the option of others.
  • 7. The quick exchange of facts, opinion and plans tends to develop more critical attitude and better judgment. It is helpful to stimulate discussion encouraging thinking and developing group opinion.

CHARECTERISTICS OF PANEL DISCUSSION The following are the main characteristics of panel discussion: • It is used at college and university level to organize the teaching at reflective level • It develops the ability of problem solving • It provides the opportunities to understand the problem and theme of discussion
  • 9. • It develops the right type of attitude and ability to tolerate anti ideas of others • It develops the ability of presentation of theme and giving their point of view logically • It develops the ability to creative thinking and criticize the theme • It develops the manners of putting questions and answering questions
  • 10. TYPES OF PANEL DISCUSSION The group discussion is organized in different forms for different levels, different purposes and for different themes. It may be two types:- 1. Public panel discussion 2. Educational panel discussion

Public panel discussion This type of panel discussions are organized for the common men problem Objectives of public panel discussion • To provide factual information regarding current problem • To determine the social values • To recreate the common men • The public panel discussions are organized in Television program. • The current problem:- Educated unemployment, annual budget, increase in prize of things, unemployment, rape cases…etc…

Educational panel discussion It is used in educational institutions to provide factual and conceptual knowledge and clarification of certain theories and principles Objectives • To provide factual information and conceptual knowledge • To give awareness of theories and principle • To provide solution of certain problem • This type of panel discussions is very useful but they are not used in any institution even at higher level. The conferences, seminar, symposium and workshop are commonly organized.
  • 13. Techniques of panel discussions A panel discussion consists of:- • The members of the panel (panelists) • The chairman (leader) • The audience

Members of panel/panelist • The panel discussion consists of 6 – 8 members who carry on a guided and informal discussion before an audience. • The members seated in a semicircle facing the audience • The members of the panel should be quick thinkers and facile talker, represents different points of view. The panelists must have mastery on the theme.

  • 16. • The primary function of the members should occupy approximately two third of the allotted time. The secondary function of the panel is to answer the question from the audience.

The Chairman • The chairman should be selected carefully, because the success of the panel will be depend on her leadership • S/he should be a person with wide mental flexibility who has a sense of fair play and is able to determine the relevance of remarks as they made. • The chairman must keep the discussion to the subject and see that all the members have an equal opportunity to express their views.
  • 18. • The chairman begins the panel discussion by exploring the whole proceeding. The members of the panel are introduced by name and background of experience with academic qualifications • The topic is announced, the limits of discussion are stated • Encourages expression of difference of opinion
  • 19. • The chairman may start the procedure by making a comment, or directing question to any particular person, but do not contribute any idea after that she keeps the conversation to the topic • Organize the discussion with occasional summaries. • A general summary before discussion is opened to the audience
  • 20. The Audience After the panel discussion, the audience is allotted to put questions and seek clarification. They can present their point of view and their experiences regarding the theme or problem. The panelists attempt to answer the questions of the audience. At the end of discussion the chairman summaries the discussion and present her point of view and express the thanks to panelists and audience

SUGGESTIONS FOR ORGANIZING PANEL DISCUSSION The following suggestions should be taken to organize effective panel discussion: • There should be rehearsal before the actual panel discussion • The Chairman should be matured person and have the full understanding of theme or problem. He should have control over the situation
  • 22. • The seating arrangements for panelists and audience should be such that one should be of equal distance, and they can observe each other • The chairman should encourage the discussion on the point which may lead to constructive aspects of the problem. He should encourage the constructive discussion among panelists and audience.

Advantages • This technique encourages social learning • The higher cognitive and affective objectives are achieved • It is used to develop the ability of problem solving and logical thinking • It develops the interests and right type of attitude towards problem • It develops capacity to respects other’s ideas and feeling of tolerance • It provides the opportunities of assimilation of theme and content.

LIMITATIONS OF PANEL DISCUSSION The followings are the limitations of panel discussion: • There are chances to deviate from the theme at time of discussion hence the purpose the panel discussion is not achieved • Some members dominate the discussion and not provide the opportunities to participate others in discussion • There is a possibility to split the group in to two sub groups i.e for against the theme, it does not maintain the conductive situation of learning • If panelists belong to different groups, it may not create appropriate learning situations
  • 25. CONCLUSION There are two types; they are public and educational panel discussion. The participants are members/panelist, chairperson and audience. The panel discussion helps to solve problems, creative thinking, criticize the theme; also get the ability to putting questions and answering questions.
