The IP (Internet Protocol) specifies how information is packetized, addressed, transferred, routed and received on the Internet. There are four main types of IP addresses: public, private, static and dynamic. IP addresses are classified into classes A, B, C, D and E which determine the number of hosts and networks each can support. Data is sent from one network to another via routing through intermediate networks.
