WHAT IS NON FERROUS
METALS?
● A non-ferrous metal is any metal, including alloys, that does
not contain iron in appreciable amounts.
● They are generally more expensive than ferrous metals
● Non-ferrous metals are used because of desirable properties
such as low weight (e.g., aluminium), higher conductivity (e.g.,
copper), non-magnetic property resistance to corrosion (e.g.,
zinc).
EXAMPLES OF NON
FERROUS METALS
● Important non-ferrous metals include
aluminium, copper, lead, nickel, tin,
titanium, zinc,
● Precious metals such as gold
,silver, platinum
● Exotic or rare metals such as cobalt,

● Organic coating provides it with additional anti-corrosion protection turning it into an
exceptionally durable and aesthetically attractive product.
TIN
In architectural use tin falls into two categories:
- The alloying of tin with other metals such as copper to form bronze.
( 90% copper and 10% tin, the content may vary upon the use)
- The coating of tin on harder metals, such as tin plated iron or steel.
Applications of tin
Solder
● Tin has been used in alloys with lead as solder.
● Tin-plated steel containers are widely used for food preservation.
● Copper cooking vessels frequently lined with a thin plating of tin.
● Such solders are primarily used for joining pipes or electric circuits.
● Tin ( 61.9% ) + Lead (38.1%) forms a mixture with melting
temperature of 183 °C
Tin roof sheet
Rate: Rs 60/Kg
Length: 1000-5000mm
Thickness: 0.14 to 0.60mm
Galvanized roofing
sheet (STEEL +TIN)
Rate: Rs 310/sqm
Thickness: 0.4- 0.55mm
The sheet holds high resistance strength
against breakage and weatherly damage.
● Durable
● Low maintainence
NICKEL
Nickel has been used for plating architectural details.
Nickel is most frequently used for building components in the form of alloys:
-Nickel silver (
-Monel metal
-Stainless steel.
Advantages
75% copper, 20% nickel, and 5% zinc)
Its advantages as a roofing material included its ability to
be brazed, welded, or soldered in place to provide a
watertight, continuous cover.
Nickel stainless steels
strength and resistance to corrosion, wear and fire make
them a practical long lasting choice for public and industrial
buildings.
Copper Nickel sheet
Rate: Rs 1500/kg
Thickness: 0.5mm- 20mm
BRASS
● Brass is commonly known for its decent
strength and electrical conductivity.
● It can be polished easily.
● Brass used for decoration purposes.
(preferred because of its bright gold-like
appearance.) Examples: homes, hotels,
restaurants, and other commercial spaces.
● Brass metals come in bars, wires, rods,
foils, strips, plates, and sheets collectively
known as brass stocks in the metal industry.
● Brass sheet is the most commonly used brass
stock.
● It is often used in decorative hardware, such as
door locking mechanisms and hinges, because
of its durability, strength, and cosmetic value.
● Lock producers use brass in making padlocks.
● Rods and wires are used to produce
screws, bolts, and locks;
● Bars, to support railings and machineries;
strips, plates, and sheets, for interior
design and structural engineering tasks.
● Red Brass – This metal contains zinc, copper and
tin.The high content of copper gives it the reddish
color. This is used in valves, sprinklers, and
components used in various pumps.
● Yellow Brass – This metal containers the same
materials but the copper content is lower than red
brass. It is most common in household applications
and décor.
● High Brass – This metal is common in hard applications
like screws
● Low Brass – This metal is used in plumbing materials
and contains 20% zinc mixed with copper.
Rs 365-450 per piece (but
may vary depending upon the
size )
RATE -
BRASS PIPE JOINTS
● In construction, lead is used frequently for:
-Roofs
-Cornices
-Tank linings
-Electrical conduits
● In plumbing, soft solder, used chiefly for soldering tin plate
and copper pipe joints, is an alloy of lead and tin.
● lead-based paint inhibits the rusting and corrosion of iron
and steel .
● Used on bridges, railways, ships, lighthouses, and other steel
structures.
● Lead used in paints. (titanium dioxide used in place of lead)
LEAD
~ Sheet lead is used for a variety of
different uses within the construction
industry:
~ Flashing round chimneys and dormer
windows
~ Flashing round where a flue projects
through the roof
~ Dressing round special window features
Lead valleys
Lead is no longer used in pipes as it caN
contaminate water and make it
poisonous
