Navi Mumbai is a planned city in India that began development in 1971 to decongest the city of Mumbai. It was proposed to provide housing and industry to absorb immigrants and attract population from Mumbai. The project involved acquiring over 343 square kilometers of land and developing the area through a polycentric model with decentralized townships. Careful planning went into infrastructure like water, sewage, transportation and managing issues like land acquisition, labor shortage and finances. Today, Navi Mumbai has a population of over 2 million with a literacy rate of 98% and standard of living higher than Mumbai. It remains an ongoing development project.
