Child Soldiers In A Long Way Gone
Ishmael Beah and Grace Akallo Like hundreds if not thousands of other child soldiers, Ishmael
Beah suffered the devastation of war and conflict in an African country. This country in
particular is Sierra Leone, a former British colony that was left with no concrete government.
The history of Sierra Leone and how the 10 year war in the country started is rarely mentioned in
A Long Way Gone. Whether the historical and political aspect of the war is purposely omitted
from the memoir or never explored by Ishmael Beah is never mentioned in the story. Nevertheless,
it is more likely that Ishmael had very little idea in the political background behind the war he was
fighting in. From a broad point of view, the war was both influenced by external... Show more

Historically, there have been child soldiers even in the United States. Bugler John Cook, served
in the U.S. Army at the age of 15 and received the Medal of Honor for his acts during the
American Civil War ( Child Soldiers Are Unfortunately Nothing New ). However, the use of
child soldiers has dramatically declined in western civilization during the 20th century.
Surprisingly, the recent use of child soldiers in Africa is still seen in media today. Grace Akallo, a
girl who formerly served under warlord Joseph Kony, suffered a similar account as Ishmael. As part
of her initiation into the army, she was forced to kill another girl. In A Long Way Gone, a rebel
soldier attempts to initiate Ishmael and others by yellong, We are going to initiate all of you by
killing these people in front of you. We have to do this to show you blood and make you strong.
You ll never see any of these people again, unless you believe in life after death (A Long Way
Gone, 90) In Akallo s book, she describes how she was trained with an AK 47, just like Ishmael
Beah. Unlike Ishmael, who was a boy, she was forced as a sex slave and raped at several occasions
(Akallo, 121). The topic of human trafficking is also explored in her book as she reports hundreds
of other boys and girls used for illegal

How Great Of An Honor Is It At Host An Event Such As The...
How great of an honor is it to host an event such as the Olympics? According to Stefan Szymanski,
the hosting of major sporting events has become the subject of intense competition among nations.
Governments will make large financial commitments in order to win the bidding competition. The
regression of big time sporting events have changed immensely, from firstly being about showing
who the best athlete was, to now a way of nations being able to bring fame and possible fortunes
to their doors for just hosting such huge events. 2000 2015 has been a time span where the
conversation about the Olympics, it s events, and it s policies have changed.
The Olympic games originated in ancient Greece, about 3,000 years ago (8th century B.C. to 4th
century A.D.) (A+E Networks, 2015). The games took place in Olympia located in the western
Peloponnese peninsula. At first the Olympic games were used as a religious festival in honor of
the ruler of gods, Zeus. After many years the Olympic games were re introduced in the 19th
century, which was done to bring countries back together as one and participate in this world
wide competition of olympians. The games as a whole have changed the way of how people see
the athletes. In the beginning of it all, the athletes competed for their religious believes, now the
race to be the best is at its highest, with the 28 sports to participate in. According to the author, the
number of professional has increased by approximately 10,500 professional

The Greatest Heroes Of The War
Born on June 20th of 1925 to a family of poor sharecroppers in small town Texas, Audie Leon
Murphy had no idea he would soon be leaving for the deadliest war to ever plague the Earth.
Fresh out of the horrors of the First World War, few would have thought that yet another, deadlier
war was on the horizon. Even fewer would ve thought that a farm boy from Texas would become
one of the greatest heroes of the war.
Audie Murphy was by all accounts a nobody. He and his family lived a quiet life, sticking to
themselves and their farms. A young Murphy would simply help outside with the farm work,
almost never wanting to be indoors. Once the war broke out, Murphy felt called to serve his
country. He tried on several occasions to enlist in the Armed Forces underage as he was not of
legal age to enlist. With the help of his sister, Corrine, he successfully enlisted in the military at the
age of 17. He was given basic training, which he completed with ease.
Audie Murphy s first war experience was in North Africa during the Allied offensive to remove
Axis forces from the top of Africa. North Africa was a very important strategic point for both
forces. If the Allies were successful in their push for control, it would be a very important starting
point for an invasion of Fascist Italy, and ultimately Nazi Germany. Murphy s unit, however, saw
no combat in North Africa due to the expulsion of Axis Forces from their final African foothold of
Tunisia. Murphy was then sent to the island of

Improving China s Image Through Advertisement
4.2 Creative advertising to create the image of a strong brand Research Question 2: Can China
create international advertisements that would be conducive to advancing its global image and
make use of soft power? It has been well established by marketers and economists that a
successful ad campaign is able to localize to the target audience and communicate messages in line
for the respective society. Advertisements often sell more of a concept of an ideal goal that concept
can vary slightly or dramatically from country to country, but its importance is undeniable. For
example, the company, Kentucky Fried Chicken, owned by Yums Food Crops previously
dominated in China, where the fast food market is now worth $174 billion, and... Show more

Chinese companies must also find a means to balance marketing capacity and maintaining its
unique identity and simultaneously encoding the message in such a fashion that it should be
easily decoded by target audiences. An example of this would be exercises programs such as
Birkam Yoga; a hot yoga program was created by Bikram Choudhury. Yoga traditionally originates
from India, but has managed to seep its way into the crevasses of societies around the world from
the United States to South Korea. Most Yoga advertisements focus on the increased health benefits
of the exercise, which is a matter of prime importance in many nations regardless of cultural
customs, because of clever marketing focused on a matter of international interest, Yoga programs
have managed to sell while keeping a unique identity. China is a nation with a dynamic and rich
history over 5,000 years worth in fact.
This works to both China s advantage and disadvantage. It has been noted that the most profitable
films China related tend to be kung fu films, while such films are not a holistic representation of
the nation from past to present, it does provide precedence for ways to integrate a traditional
culture with international societies. Directors such as Zhang Yimou and kung fu celebrities such
as Jackie Chan and Jet Lee are as much a part of China s cinematographic history as the worlds.
Films such as Ang Lee s Crouching Tiger, Hidden

Unit 8 Support First Company
As outlined in the advertisement and selection model the Support First Company is looking for
someone to fill the void left from a staff member taking Parental Leave. The company has
selected a performance based model because they need the applicant who fills this position to be
able to start straight away and pick up the responsibilities as soon as the staff member leaves to
go on parental leave. However, they have indicated that they are willing to be flexible to an
extent if no successful applicant is identified within these selection cut offs. The cut offs the
company is willing to be flexible with are those which are knowledge based and can be learnt on
the job (HR and clerical knowledge). However, the company wants to be sure that the selected
applicant is trainable and still has knowledge in HR and clerical roles. For this reason two factors
will be considered before applying some flexibility. 1)The cut off for both HR and clerical
knowledge is applicant pool based. It is not known if the cut off used is at the standard required to

Heaven s Gate Mass Suicide
It s me, Charlotte. I think the weirdest thing I have ever heard about happened today. I believe
that it is called the Heaven s Gate Mass Suicides but whatever it is, it is super creepy. Apparently,
police found thirty nine men dead at a rental home in Rancho Santa Fe. The person who rented it
out thought it was for a religious group, but nobody could find evidence to prove it. The estate
looks really expensive too from ten to twenty thousand a month ( 39 )! The news said that all of
the men were particularly young, from 18 to 24 years old. All of the people who died were
wearing dark clothing, tennis shoes, and lying in a prone position. They didn t find any blood on
the dead people. I think they are trying to connect it with another

the realm of international law such treaties are binding merely on the governments of Member

The interpretation of Article 234 In Van Gend en Loos v Nederlandse Administratie der
Balastigen[8], the plaintiff, a Dutch firm, tried to invoke Article 12 (now 25)[9] of the EC Treaty
before a Dutch tribunal, the Tariefcommissie. Using the Article 234 procedure the Tariefcommissie
referred two questions to the Court. Firstly, Whether Article 12…has direct application within
the territory of a Member State, in other words, whether nationals of such a State can, on the basis
of the article in question, lay claim to individual rights which the courts must protect .[10] It was
argued by the Dutch and Belgian Governments that this reference concerned the application of the
Treaty and not it s interpretation as required by Article 234, and hence that the Court had no
jurisdiction to consider it. The query, they considered, as a matter of Dutch constitutional law,
should be answered by the Dutch national courts, subject to Articles 226 and 227, which allow the
Commission and Member States to challenge actions of other Member States. In a superficial
holding that this reference related to interpretation only ,

How Does Inarritu Use Innovative Camera Techniques In The...
Amores Perros and City of God each have their own technique of filming its narrative that draws
viewers in immediately. Both films chose not to portray easily recognizable tourist or popular areas
of the city that would allow the audience to distinguish exactly what city the film took place in
plays an important role (Chetin, 2016). The use of innovative camera techniques utilized within
both the films have a significant impact in the films success in appealing to a global transnational
audience.
Inarritu s use of handheld cameras, rapid editing, fluid camera work, and an extensive range of

The innovative camera techniques used do not utilize the realist style that was previously
associated with films dealing with social deprivation; however, it does use identifiable genre
characteristics, but in a way that is more specific for that location (Anon, 2016). The camera angles
used within City of God create certain atmospheres and alter the meaning of a scene. The film
editing creates a world and a feeling that absorbs the audience and transports them to a place they
have never been to. The opening scene begins with a nice atmosphere of people playing music
and dancing. Then it is seen from the chicken s perspective. It watches as the knives sharpen and
other chickens are being killed. It runs away and can be seen as symbolizing Rocket s attempt to
flee from the gang life. The mixture of the camera angles builds up suspense. The variation of high
and low angles accentuate the disordered way the city is built up from different layers of houses,
small shacks and streets. This scene submerges the audience in the feeling of excitement, suspense,
and fear as the chicken attempts to make its

The Central Problems Of International Politics
ne of the central problems of international politics is that of cooperation or lack of cooperation.
Though, cooperation is not always possible or a welcome idea when it comes to states making
decisions. Creating and claiming value are two of the most fundamental aspects of negotiation
strategy that exist, but there is tension with one another. In any negotiation, the delegates need to
decide which course of action to take whether that be competitive, cooperative, or some of both.
David Lax and James Sebenius call this the negotiator s dilemma. It is similar to the prisoners
dilemma in game theory, because this is a way of using rational choice and strategic thinking to
describe situations. In a book written by D. Lax and J. Sebenius The Manager as Negotiator: The
Negotiator s Dilemma: Creating and Claiming Value, the authors argue that negotiation includes
both cooperative and competitive elements, and that these elements exist in tension. The dilemma
in this situation is in deciding whether to pursue a cooperative or a competitive strategy. The
authors suggest several strategies to resolve this dilemma, and how to encourage cooperative
approaches to creating mutually beneficial outcomes. Conflict analysts tend to view negotiations
either as a matter of cooperating to create value, or as a matter of competing to claim values. In the
value creating view, negotiators work primarily to increase the available resources, to find joint
gains or win win solutions,

The Date the World Went to War
In 1914 Bosnia was holding the annual summer manoeuvers of the Austro Hungarian army that
were centered on the XV and XVI corps there. It was said it was beautiful Sunday morning as it
was bright and sunny that day. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was there serving as the inspector of the
army. It was announced in March that the Archduke Franz Ferdinand would be attending this
event, and would be visiting Sarajevo as well. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were
assassinated by Gavrilo Principon June 28th, 1914 in Sarajevo as an act of terror by Princip, on
behalf of the Slavic Nationalist Black Hand Organization. This date is often associated with being
the start of the First World War. Franz Ferdinand was an Archduke of Austria Este, Austro
Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia. He was born in Graz, Austria, and was
the eldest son of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria and was the younger brother of Franz Joseph
and Maximilian. In 1889 Ferdinand s cousin committed suicide at his hunting lodge. This changed
his life drastically because this meant his father was in line for the throne. Shortly after gaining the
throne Ferdinand s father passed away from typhoid fever. With the death of his father Franz was
now in charge of the throne.1
Franz Ferdinand was enlisted into the Austro Hungarian Army at a young age. He was promoted
often, and was even appointed lieutenant by the age of fourteen. He followed that by becoming a

When something, anything is created nobody knows what it will become.
On January 20th, 1892 in Springfield, Massachusetts the game of basketball was born. Dr. James
Naismith would be credited for creating the game of basketball during the winter months at a
local YMCA. The game consisted of thirteen rules, nine of which are still in existence today. The
final score of the first game was 1 0 with William Chase being credited with the first ever basket.
There is no way anybody could tell that when Dr. Naismith created the game of basketball he
thought it would turn into the game it is today.
The game of basketball is pure representation of the lamb as the game was created from one man
to give another man or woman something to do in his or her free time. The game was not
created out of greed or jealousy it was purely for fun and something to do. The game of
basketball is also the definition of creativity as the game continues to get more creative each and
every day with players now going from just passing the ball to dribbling, shooting three point
shots, and even dunks. When the game of basketball was in its earliest stages, there wasn t even a
such thing as a basketball. It doesn t get much more creative than that. The first ever basketball
was a soccer ball because Dr. Naismith did not even have enough money to create a new ball. It
wouldn t be until two whole years later that the basketball was created.

Home Depot Functional Strategies Essay
Home Depots functional strategies are in many ways similar to Lowes. However essential
differences, while they are not always clear do exist between these competitors.
The human resources strategy of Home Depot is more prevalent than Lowes in my estimation.
Home Depot has an offering to contractors with advanced knowledge. The experience curve for
employees does exist for this industry. It would be imperative for top management to retain talent.
The cost of training a new employee that is not familiar with do it yourself projects could be
expensive. The knowledge that Home Depot employees have is a competitive advantage. Using

Department of Defense, with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency, and carried out by the

General William C. Westmoreland, commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command,
Vietnam, shifted the operation s tactics from commando attacks on land to shore bombardments
using mortars, rockets, and recoilless rifles fired from South Vietnamese patrol boats. It is also
notable that McNamara in this conversation clearly favors explaining to Congress the link between
the incident and the OPLAN 34A activities. The naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox

Similarities Between Bible And Enuma Elish
The New International Version (NIV) Bible from the Hebrew religion and the Enuma Elish
poem from the Babylonian religion, tell two different ways of how the universe was created. The
Bible is more specific and gives a step by step account for the creation of the universe. However,
the Enuma Elish is vague and does not include details on how they believe the universe was
created. The only similarity between the Babylonian and Hebrew account for the creation of man is
that both religions state a godcreated the universe.
The New International Version (NIV) Bible, specifically states in the book of Genesis that God
created the universe by stating, Let there be... and there was. It is written that God said, Let
there be light and there was light. (NIV Bible, Genesis 1:3) God said, Let there be a vault
between the waters to separate water from water and there was a vault. (NIV Bible, Genesis 1:6)
God continued to speak commands for a total of six days until the universe and everything in it
was created. On the other hand, the poem Enuma Elish states that Marduk, the creator god, kills
Tiamat, a primordial goddess of the ocean, and from her body fashions the world. (The Norton

Enzyme Lab
Objective The objective of this experiment is to study the effect of varying temperatures on the
enzyme catalase by measuring the oxygen production as it breaks down hydrogen peroxide.
Introduction Enzymes are used in our daily lives in many ways. From industry to agriculture,
enzymes play a necessary role in everything from bread to laundry soap. In medicine, enzymes
can speed up, slow down, or block cellular reactions in the body. Enzyme reactions can be
measured as a diagnostic tool. Enzymes and their effects are important to study because they are
all around us, speeding up cellular processes and making the work of the cell happen with a lot
less effort. (Novozymes, 2015) Enzymes are proteins that catalyze different cell reactions. They...

While the error bars did overlap on tubes two and three, the trend of the data supports the
hypothesis and prediction. At 0 degrees Celsius, enzymes can still function, but do so at a much
slower rate. Cold does not cause the breakdown of the tertiary structure as heat does, but this is
not an optimal temperature for enzymes to function. At 23 degrees Celsius, the rate of the
enzyme activity speeds up, and then goes up again at 37 degrees, which is the ideal temperature
of human beings. This is also the ideal temperature range for enzymes to function. Molecular
collisions that bind the enzyme and the substrate speed up in this temperature range, allowing for
more bonding to occur due to the increase in kinetic energy (Santhtosh, unk). At 55 degrees, the
hydrogen and peptide bonds that create the enzyme break down, destroying the tertiary structure
of the enzyme. The substrate can no longer bond because there is no active site for it to fit into.
The enzyme is denatured, or broken down to amino acids so the body can recylce the proteins
for other uses (RSC, 2015). While the error bars do overlap as shown in Figure 1, this may just
suggest that the range of enzyme activity was close due to both 23 and 37 degrees being within an

Plague And People Summary
Disease and plague, something that has been with man since the beginning, always challenging
them, forcing them to adapt and change. Plagues and Peoples by William H. McNeill is a book
explaining the hardships, facts, and evidence of how plagues caused man to adapt and move.
Documented encounters with disease, ranging from the height of the Chinese empire, to the
medieval kingdoms in Europe and Spain, as well as the colonization of the Americas, and the
great genocide of the native peoples of South America. The illusory idea that man had won the
battle in 1974 was quickly proven wrong yet again, for man may never win the battle against
disease, and forever be in a constant battle. McNeill s claim of fact as well as Ethos allowed him to
write a consistent story including rhetoricdevices, showing the true purpose of the informative book

McNeill has this said drive, writing his book in a way that would explain what he is trying to say,
which is how plagues have always, and will always be part of mans evolution. Infectious disease
which antedated the emergence of humankind will last as long as humanity itself, and will surely
remain, as it has hitherto, one of the fundamental parameters and determinants of human history
(295). He states here exactly what he was trying to convey throughout the whole book. This
shows control over the story and that McNeill knows what he wants people to hear, and what they
should do with it. McNeill really gets the reader to think about plagues as a whole and their role in
humanities evolution and adaptation. It gives people a broader understanding and opens up new
doors to which they can learn from. This shows his claim of authority, or Ethos, of the

Jewish Influence On Jerry Seinfeld
Since the creation of the television, people from all walks of life have been tuned into their
favorite shows, news channels, and entertainment. Throughout the years, popular television shows
have captured people s attention ever since. A popular comedy sitcom show, Seinfeld, created by
Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, depicts a group of friends who live in Manhattan, and through their
characters shows the everyday life for the individuals. Seinfeldis still one of the very popular
comedy sitcoms to come out during the 90 s. The reason that sets Seinfeld apart from other
televisionshows is how Jerry Seinfeld included through the characters and episodes the Jewish
American culture. Jerry Seinfeld, who is a Jewish American, wrote the show to include the Jewish

No the brain does not perceive acute and chronic pain differently. The perception of pain is
subjective to each individual person based on his or her own mood, emotional state, and prior
experience. A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) shows that there is no difference
between someone with chronic paincompared to a person with an acute pain. The fMRI shows that
pain perception and related brain stimulation patterns were virtually undistinguishable between

It s Time to Abolish The Penny! Essay
Between 2001 and 2006, there has been an increase of .6 cents for the reproduction of the penny.
This increase displays economic problems that may lead to fatal ones. The penny is composed of

materials to skyrocket. Many Americans think the penny is putting our country in jeopardy with
financial losses. This meaningless coin is losing money for the mint, and should be abolished. The

Analysis Of Magnetic Resonance Imaging ( Mri ) Based Three...
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) based three dimensional reconstruction has been used
successfully to evaluate the female pelvic floor muscles and tissues in women with and without
pelvic floor dysfunction [1, 2]. Furthermore, MR based 3D reconstructed models have been used to
generate finite element and element free computational models suitable for simulating vaginal child
birth [3, 4], offering insight into risk factors for childbirth related pelvic floorinjury. The Finite
Element Method has also been used to evaluate anterior vaginal wall support, and the mechanisms
underlying cystocele formation [5]. Precise segmentation of pelvic magnetic resonance images
(MRI) is an important step in building the three dimensional (3D) reconstructed structural models
suitable for computational analysis. Segmentation consists of outlining each organ or tissue of
interest from the underlying grayscale images on each slice in the dataset.
The 3D reconstructed models are currently generated from manually segmented label maps, which
currently require multiple hours of tedious manual segmentation to produce each reconstructed 3D
model. This manual segmentation bottleneck limits the number of computational models that can
be reliably produced in a timely manner, thereby limiting the number of study subjects available for
the kind of statistical comparisons that can potentially lead to clinically meaningful insight. In
addition, the structures of the female pelvic floor are very complex

The Culture Of Chin Leadership And Management
Leadership and Management
The culture of China, in terms of management inside of a company is described as each person
has a very clear role and that helps organization to keep things in order. Unlike Serbia and
Montenegro where it has a culture of employees expecting employer to give them detailed
directions and no questions are expected. Generally managers in China use autocratic leadership
style. However they will not embarrass or punish employee publicly or in front of the colleagues.
Another important factor is the hierarchy of Chinese culture. Even though the actual control is at
the top of line management there may be informal interaction between staffs or managers and staffs
(Kwintessential.co.uk, 2014).

Chinese culture is more people oriented where role and responsibilities are not stated clearly and
when the problems are faced they seek for teamwork approach no matter which role they are
assigned to. Consequently, each individual can engage themselves in a plethora of ventures in
contest of their time and resources (Busch et al., 2013).
Relationships are vital in China and looking after your network of relationships is viewed as road
to success. For example during the work time people view their coworkers also as friends. If one
of them were in trouble they would help them. The goals of a team are very vital and if the team
succeeds everyone get compensated for the success. If the team fails it would be difficult to blame
someone for not performing the task well. Even though teamwork is motivating and it builds better
relationship between employees as well as trust it can result in resource waste and lack of
accountability in the end results (Connecteast.net, 2014). http://geert hofstede.com/china.html
According to Hofstede China is collectivist in nature, which means they work hard for the result of
group achievement. They do not look so much on individual achievement but stress the group
effort. Teamwork is held in high esteem in China, and is therefore interwoven into the very
existence of the people. The philosophy that they adhere is that the group is more important than
any individual (Connecteast.net, 2014).

Implementing Learning Communities At The Community College...
Introduction Many students start college and end up either dropping out or taking an exuberant

institutions have started addressing these circumstances by creating learning communities. The idea

The students in the learning communities will take some courses together, often with a common

factors: shared knowledge, shared knowing and shared responsibility (Rao, 2005). The courses
are linked together and the students can share knowledge with each other. By sharing this
knowledge the students enrolled in the classes together, get to know each other due to the fact
they are together more often. The students become dependent on each other to get work
accomplished and this shared responsibility helps the students learn to collaborate. The five
basic models include linked courses, learning clusters, coordinated studies program (CSP),
freshman interest groups (FIG) and federated learning community (FLC) (Rao, 2005). I would

Instructional Design Models And Learning Theories Are Used...
Sink, D (2008), claims that Instructional Design Models and Learning Theories are used after the
needs of an organization have been identified (Sink, D. 2008). Instructional Systems Design
Models provide designers effective ways to identify solutions to support the needs of an
organization. This paper will discuss the characteristics of the Experiential LearningModel,
Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction Model, and the Gerlach and Ely Models along with
providing a comparison and contrast of these models.
Characteristics of ELM, ARCS, and Gerlach and Ely Models
Experiential Learning Model (ELM): Based on early work from John Dewey, Kurt Lewin, and Jean
Piaget, ELM was developed in 1974 by David A. Kolb and Ron Fry in 1974. This model emphasizes
the idea that learning occurs when the student takes interest in the subject matter and engages in
self initiated learning. Learning is an on going process that is based on experience, interactions with
the environment, and involves obtaining knowledge through social interactions. The ELM is
composed of four elements: Concrete experience, observation and reflection, Forming abstract
concepts, and testing in new situations and five steps which consist of: Experience, Share, Process,
Generalize, and Apply (Moore, Eric T. 2013).
Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction (ARCS) Model: The model was developed by
John Keller in 1979 who believed that motivation of students had direct correlation to their ability to

Character Strength in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a novel about survival.
Solzhenitsyn shows us how even in seemingly atrocious circumstances each person can find
sources of strength that gives them the will to carry on. Many of the things that the prisoners think
of as their sources of strengths would mean nothing to us, but if one thinks about it, without them
we would perhaps lose the will to carry on.
Most of the prisoners have more than one source of strength, perhaps subconsciously they have

seem like a religious man, but as one goes further into the novel, one begins to see him taking a
bigger interest in religion, and more importantly, faith. Alyosha tries to show Shukhov that faith
is the strongest source of strength, and he tells Shukhov to try to see the importance of spiritual
goods rather than material goods. However, objects have a lot of importance to all of the
prisoners. Aloysha hides his New Testament to avoid it being confiscated just Shukhov hides his

of the novel Shukhov gives away a biscuit to Alyosha and expects nothing in return. This shows
that he has taken Alyosha s advice and has chosen to feel spiritual accomplishment rather than
keeping the material good. Property is another source of strength in the novel. Possessing
something that other prisoners do not have is a way of showing individuality in a place where
all the prisoners are marked as the same, ignoring what they have or have not done. Shukhov s
spoon is also very symbolic. Shukhov is forced to hide the spoon in order to keep it from being
taken by the guards. In a way this shows us how the camp tries to take away anything that gives the
prisoners a sense of individuality, or anything that gives them happiness.

The Catcher in the Rye has been described, analyzed, rebuffed, and critiqued over the years. Each
writer expresses a different point of view: It is a story reflecting teen ager s talk thoughts emotions
actions; or angst. I believe it is an adult s reflection of his own unresolved grief and bereavements.
That adult is the author, J.D. Salinger. He uses his main character, Holden, as the voice to vent the
psychological misery he will not expose or admit to.

identity. The book is, he claims, All about suicide and silence (31). I found Ambrosio s correlations
to be very telling and supportive of my thesis.
Early in Salinger s life, he faced one the cultural illnesses widespread in the North Eastern states
of America. It was the virulent disease of anti Semitism. Salinger lived in New York City, where
he was raised as the son of Jewish parents. The 1920 s and 1930 s were a time in America when
Anti Semitism was written into the policies of many institutions. His heritage automatically

A Study On Bacterial Transformation
Bacterial Transformation
Fiona Obas
5155246
U42 Abstract
DNA encodes the genetic instructions for cells to carry out their daily activities. DNA can come
in many forms; plasmids for example are small circular DNA molecules found in most bacterial
cells. Though plasmids may not be essential for the life of bacteria, it can give cells resistance in
foreign environments. For the purpose of this experiment, an ampicillin resistant plasmid is
introduced to E. coli. This is done through a process of genetic engineering called transformation.
Transformation works through the uptake, incorporation, and expression of a foreign gene to alter
the genetic code of a cell. Three conditions are needed for successful transformation: a host, a
vector, and a technique to identify the transformed cells. E. coli is used in this experiment as the
host (E. coli is commonly used in biotechnology due to its rapid rate of growth and short
reproduction time). A vector mediates the transfer of foreign DNAinto the host cell. Plasmids are
commonly used vectors that will also be used in this experiment. The procedure of tagging is used
in this experiment to differentiate the transformed cells from those that were not. The learning
objectives of this experiment are to: observe the process of bacterial transformation in an
experiment; and demonstrate a change in phenotype due to uptake and expression of the genes in a
known plasmid.

Finally, in terms of regulation of product safety, PharmaCARE threw all ethicsout the window by
working around a number of safety requirements and putting consumers lives at risk. The
organization used its reputation as a caring, ethical and well run company to pull the wool over the

PharmaCARE was required to seek FDA approval for distributing the new drug in mass quantities.
Instead, it created a subsidiary that acted as a compounding pharmacy to distribute the drug directly

What are President Obama s plans for immigration reform? Will this immigration reform positively
OR negatively affect the U.S. economy? How? Current Issues
February 11, 2013
Currently, 11 million illegal immigrants inhabit the United States. This number will continue to
augment without proper regulation of these aliens. Ever since his first inauguration, it has been
President Barack Obama s mission to improve America s mediocre immigration system. Since
Obama s reelection for his second term, he has constantly stressed the fact that the new ideas for
immigration reform are on the top of his list. Not only will these new reclaims help both the legal
and illegal immigrants, and American citizens, but also they will benefit the ... Show more content

Congress stresses that this pathway to citizenship is mainly focused on the 11 million
undocumented aliens in America, but it is equally vital to deal with future immigrants, as well, or
the country may find itself housing more illegals and not progressing to a better America (Fox
News, The Associated Press, foxnews.com).
Lastly, Obama s final aspiration is to break our old fashioned system and bring it to the 21st
century. The president s opinion about visa card laws was that they are outdated and make no
sense, (Fox News, The Associated Press, foxnews.com). He hopes to join family members with
those who have come to earn a living already and to avoid the prolonged wait of future
immigrants. Having to wait years before being able to send one s family to America is absurd to
the President and surely to a majority of others (CNN Political Unit, CNN.com).
These plans, ideas, and desires for a higher quality national immigration system will be assorted
into a bill. Witnesses largely appealed to congress disposition to pass the bill because not only will
this bill ameliorate the lives of immigrants and their families, but also the US economy (Fox News,
The Associated Press, foxnews.com).
Correspondingly, there is a plethora of reasons why a substantial immigration reform would
positively impact the US economy. To begin, immigrants

Compare And Contrast The Movie And Maria Full Of Grace
The film, Maria full of grace and the book, Open Veins of Latin America share a plethora of
similarities and differences, however, what these two substances do is substantially support each
other. Although the film is a work of fiction, the movie does an excellent job in supplementing the
information that is offered in the book which will be explained further in the essay. A major
difference between the book and the film is that the film seems to be more personal while the book
is more impersonal.
To begin, the film Maria full of grace, presents a young woman, Maria who lives in a household
where it is seen that her family is struggling financially and that her family essentially relies on
her and her mother for financial income. It could be inferred from the film that the family is
struggling because once Maria quit her job in the factory, her mother and sister whom who has a
child are appalled at this act. As mentioned, prior you get a more personal feel to this film in
contrast from the book. This is shown through her interactions with her family, coworkers
/ friends, and boyfriend. This film touch base on how being struggling financially would lead you
to perform jobs that aren t exactly legal. Once Maria quit her job at the flower factory and her
family begged her to go back, she wouldn t which fundamentally led her to become a mule in
transporting pellets into the United States for money. Maria s life is an example of those who live
under this umbrella of poverty.

Gloria Gaynor s Song I Will Survive
I chose the famous and well known song, I Will Survive, because it tells me that I will survive
the 7th grade and school there after! This song was sung in 1978 by Gloria Gaynor, an African
American women. This catchy song was a huge hit during the disco era and has a medium to up
beat tempo. I will survive, best represents me because I will survive homework, sports, and
school work, although at this time in life it does not feel like it! My favorite part of the song is
when it says that Oh, no, not I, I will survive, because it shows that I will never give up and keep
trying new things and that I will pull through. School is like a battlefield, having your ups and your
downs. This song is also about friendship, love, broken hearts,

The Wife Of BathпїЅs Tale And Prologue And The Franklin s Tale
In The Wife of Bath s Tale and Prologue and The Franklin s Tale, the central theme is the
relationship between man and woman. There are different views of this relationship or marriage in
these two tales: either the woman has the power in the marriage granted from her husband, or the
husband and wife grant each other power in the marriageso neither dominates. The Wifeof Bath
begins her prologue by explaining that she considers herself an authority of marriage due to her
experience ; the Wife of Bath says, Experience, though no authority/Were in this world, would be
enough for me/To speak of woe that married life affords;/For since I was twelve years of age, my

husbands she could have in a lifetime (20 23). The Wife of Bath goes on to say that God gave
men and women instruments to use and the instruments are not just for urinating but for pleasure
and procreation (134). The Wife of Bath says, In wifehood I will use my instrument/As freely as

Essay on Disk Jockeys
Disk Jockeys
In today s modern world the DJ has become a musician; the turntable, his instrument. It took
fifteen years for this amazing resolution. DJ s have actually been around for years; mixing and
scratching however, it did not come along until the late 70 s or early 80 s ( Disc Jockey 1 ). A lot of
people were doing this. But the main front line man was and still is Granmasterflash.
Granmasterflash, one of hip hop s founding fathers and the creator of the Quick Mix. He was the
first person to change the arrangements of songs by using duplicate copies of records and manually
editing/repeating the climatic part by rubbing the record back and forth ( Grandmaster Flash ). But
now the DJ has changed. The kinds of DJ s are different, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For some DJs this includes talk and games, while for others it means spinning the latest and greatest
to the hippest people in town.
The equipment that is needed to start out to be a DJ is two turntables. DJ s will also need a scratch
mixer. The DJ will need some cartridges/needles. He will also need a good pair of headphones. DJ
s would definitely have to vinyl or records ( DJ Equipment ).
There are two types of turntables. There are belt drive turntable and a direct drive turntable. Belt
driven decks work by a big rubber band linking round a motor, then round the underside of the
deck plate. The motor makes the band rotate, which in turn makes the plate turn. On direct drive
decks, however, the motor is placed in the center of the deck, which turns the center spindle of
the deck directly instead of a rubber band linking the motor. Right now the best turntable on the
market is the Technics SL 1200 Direct Drive Turntable. The SL 1200 Turntable has a pitch lock
button. The pitch lock button has the ability to change the tempo of a song without changing the
pitch. This lets drastically speed up songs with vocals without a chipmunk effect. The SL 1200
also has quartz pitch blend control. The pitch blend control is the effect of the temporary changing
of pitch to get beats in phase. Club DJs typically use their fingers to speed up or slow down the
record by pushing/pulling the record by the label. Some twist the spindle in the center to

Religious Thinkers In Moliere s Tartuffe
The Enlightenment period was a revolutionary time in history. Countless thinkers during this time
challenged the traditional ideologies in an effort to bring in a new way of thinking that embraced
logic and reasoning. The majority of these attempted to combat the Catholic Church and its
oppressive influence on the government. Needless to say, religious and aristocratic leaders during
this time did not show very high regard to these thinkers, most were censored. imprisoned, tortured
and/or exiled from their countries. In his play Tartuffe, the French playwright Moliere depicts a
character named Tartuffe that is shown as a highly hypocritical religious person who was taken
into the family residence of a man named Orgon, who is blind to... Show more content on

Gluttony is seen near the beginning of act 1.4 where Dorine is sarcastically marveling at how
much Tartuffe ate during his meal: A brace of partridge, and a leg of mutton. In fact, he ate so
much, he popped a button! (Moliere, 63). Secondly, lust is seen throughout the play, as it is
mentioned multiple times that he is lusting after some of the women in the house, including
Elmire, Orgon s wife. Elmire actually uses his insatiable lust against him in act 3.3 in order to
expose Tartuffe for who he was to Orgon. Lastly, wrath and greed are seen shortly after this. When
Orgon jumps out from under the table where he was listening in to the whole affair, he tries to
banish Tartuffe out of the house, however, Tartuffe is greatly angered by this and blackmails Orgon
with letter that were given to him allowing him to inherit Orgon s house and fortune. This also
reveals that this was another one of Tartuffe s intentions all along, and he used his façade to
manipulate Orgon throughout this entire affair to get his fortune.
Lastly, Moliere depicts Tartuffe as sort of a pest or a nuisance. Tartuffe ...is even the canonic
example and the excellent model of the parasite. What is astonishing is that he had come to be the
personification of a hypocrite.

Essay about Mexicans Begin Jogging
The irony of Gary Soto Mexicans Begin Jogging Gary s Soto Mexicans Begin Jogging, describes
an event that happened when he worked in a factory where illegal Mexican workers were
employed. Although the poem is simple, Soto brings identity, ironic, drama, and imagery to his
audience. The narrative reflects irony the speaker went through and the dilemma that Mexican
Americans go through. The poems tone is ironic and not taking too seriously. The poem begins
explaining to the reader the story of a Mexican American as he worked in an industrial factory at
some point in his life. In the factory I worked, in the fleck of rubber, under a press of an oven

understands that people like him, mainly Mexicans who come to the United States to strive for

Analysis of Wing Safety Using Full-Range Leadership Model...
During the past eight months this wing has endured a horrific string of safety accidents resulting
in the death or serious injury of multiple individuals. Unfortunately service members and/or
dependents have been identified as the root cause. As the new Chief of the Wing Safety office
this is my number #1 priority. I cannot solve this problem alone and will rely heavily on my
team. This paper will explain how I analyzed the current environment using the Full Range
Leadership Model (FRLM) as well my plan to build them back up using the same model.
Additionally, I will detail my plan that will address the safety issue and establish goalsetting
milestones which will help us achieve our objective.

committed to solving this problem and will do so without cutting corners. Second, I will make it
clear that I cannot do this alone. Following the intellectual stimulation model I will communicate to
them the need to come up with new ideas, but just as important, I want them involved in decision
making process. Third, I will address the morale issue by using the inspirational motivation
model. They need to hear we will succeed. By using this technique I will convey to them that
despite the awesome challenge that lies before us, we will succeed and save lives. This will be a
theme throughout our problem solving process in order to eliminate self doubt and instill
confidence. Finally, like any team in a sport or work environment, not everyone is the same and
each person may require different levels of attention. Simply put, I need to know who these people
really are. It is my responsibility to provide the proper feedback, guidance and mentorship to each
of them using the individual consideration trait. In this role I will be developing safety experts
today, who in turn, can spread their knowledge and successful techniques to the troops of tomorrow.
Starting immediately the team and I will meet daily to discuss this issue. Before we commence I

significance because fashionable clothing, accessories, and body adornments are not only obvious
visual signifiers, but fashion has the ability to speak for individual, subcultures, and, in some
cases, even entire societies. Incidental items, particularly branded objects such as handbags,
footwear, jewellery, and accessories act as significant symbols of status and class within the
Western world and are perpetuated through the media, specifically in shows such as Sex and the

Biomedical of Health
The biomedical model of health states that the individual is not responsible for their illness and
that the mind and body work independently from each other. Ogden J, (2004) However, for

indicates that there is a clear link between the mind and body due to the sufferer vomiting after

What Structures Do Successful Organisations Develop...
In today s fast changing economy, companies have to focus on their capability to meet constantly
evolving customer expectations. Therefore, managers have to adapt their way of running a
company to promote a supporting environment for innovation. As defined by Van de Ven,
innovation is the development and implementation of new ideas by people who over time engage
in transactions with others in an institutional context (1986). This involves the employees and
managers within the company, and all the external area like the clients and shareholders. The
challenge is also to find the more conducive structure to achieve the goals of increasing individuals
and organisation effectiveness. Nowadays, companies move away from the traditional organization
structures described by Taylor, Ford, Weber or even Fayol. Although some companies are still
partly based on this type of structure, most of the companies rely on new organisational forms. This
leads to the following question : what structures do successful organisations develop in fast
changing and innovative environments ? On one hand, this assignment will examine the abandon
of the classic theories and their universal principles about the structure of businesses. On the other
hand, it will highlight the adoption of new organisational forms, and analyse them. The traditional
organization structures described by Taylor, Ford, Weber and other theorists are based on a
systematic and rational approach. The organisation and its

The Great Depression And The People Of The 1970 S
In today s day and age when people think of country music they imagine the classics, Johnny
Cash, Willie Nelson, George Strait and many more. When people think of a redneck, they
imagine a diehard country boy, who loves his country with a confederate flag in one hand and a
beer in the other. But that is our generations take on these two words. The real question here is
what did those two words mean to the people who came up with them and defined them. It couldn
t have been easy. It was no surprise that people were still recovering from the Great Depression
and the more recent recession. Families were left destitute, men were working factory jobs for less
than minimum wage, if that, and people had just about given up hope. In the time of... Show more

This was huge for individuals considering people were being grouped together under general labels,
such as white trash , hillbilly and redneck . Not only were they being grouped, it was being
publicized on talk shows, through music, books, movies, news outlets and many more forms of
media. What the upper class people failed to see when they were stereotyping was, While these
labels developed in different contexts and are sometimes used in different ways, they have evolved
into virtually synonymous labels demarcating a problematic whiteness polluted by poverty and
rural culture (Southern Rock Musicians: Construction of White Trash Pg.207). Middle and upper
class men and women felt the need to put poor, white families down to make themselves seem that
much higher up, but in reality it was an out for taking responsibility for patriarchy. If anything
these titles the poor, white men were given were just a way to define inequalities and social
problems that society wanted to make apparent to hide from their own personal problems.
When America today sees a Confederate Flag being flown or displayed, there is usually a
controversy that occurs. People in todays society still believe that it is a symbol of racism and just
inappropriate to be flying considering our country s history. Obviously not much has changed since
the 1970 s. People back then believed it was racial bigotry and a symbol of uneducated white trash.

  • 2. Child Soldiers In A Long Way Gone Ishmael Beah and Grace Akallo Like hundreds if not thousands of other child soldiers, Ishmael Beah suffered the devastation of war and conflict in an African country. This country in particular is Sierra Leone, a former British colony that was left with no concrete government. The history of Sierra Leone and how the 10 year war in the country started is rarely mentioned in A Long Way Gone. Whether the historical and political aspect of the war is purposely omitted from the memoir or never explored by Ishmael Beah is never mentioned in the story. Nevertheless, it is more likely that Ishmael had very little idea in the political background behind the war he was fighting in. From a broad point of view, the war was both influenced by external... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Historically, there have been child soldiers even in the United States. Bugler John Cook, served in the U.S. Army at the age of 15 and received the Medal of Honor for his acts during the American Civil War ( Child Soldiers Are Unfortunately Nothing New ). However, the use of child soldiers has dramatically declined in western civilization during the 20th century. Surprisingly, the recent use of child soldiers in Africa is still seen in media today. Grace Akallo, a girl who formerly served under warlord Joseph Kony, suffered a similar account as Ishmael. As part of her initiation into the army, she was forced to kill another girl. In A Long Way Gone, a rebel soldier attempts to initiate Ishmael and others by yellong, We are going to initiate all of you by killing these people in front of you. We have to do this to show you blood and make you strong. You ll never see any of these people again, unless you believe in life after death (A Long Way Gone, 90) In Akallo s book, she describes how she was trained with an AK 47, just like Ishmael Beah. Unlike Ishmael, who was a boy, she was forced as a sex slave and raped at several occasions (Akallo, 121). The topic of human trafficking is also explored in her book as she reports hundreds of other boys and girls used for illegal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Great Of An Honor Is It At Host An Event Such As The... How great of an honor is it to host an event such as the Olympics? According to Stefan Szymanski, the hosting of major sporting events has become the subject of intense competition among nations. Governments will make large financial commitments in order to win the bidding competition. The regression of big time sporting events have changed immensely, from firstly being about showing who the best athlete was, to now a way of nations being able to bring fame and possible fortunes to their doors for just hosting such huge events. 2000 2015 has been a time span where the conversation about the Olympics, it s events, and it s policies have changed. The Olympic games originated in ancient Greece, about 3,000 years ago (8th century B.C. to 4th century A.D.) (A+E Networks, 2015). The games took place in Olympia located in the western Peloponnese peninsula. At first the Olympic games were used as a religious festival in honor of the ruler of gods, Zeus. After many years the Olympic games were re introduced in the 19th century, which was done to bring countries back together as one and participate in this world wide competition of olympians. The games as a whole have changed the way of how people see the athletes. In the beginning of it all, the athletes competed for their religious believes, now the race to be the best is at its highest, with the 28 sports to participate in. According to the author, the number of professional has increased by approximately 10,500 professional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Greatest Heroes Of The War Born on June 20th of 1925 to a family of poor sharecroppers in small town Texas, Audie Leon Murphy had no idea he would soon be leaving for the deadliest war to ever plague the Earth. Fresh out of the horrors of the First World War, few would have thought that yet another, deadlier war was on the horizon. Even fewer would ve thought that a farm boy from Texas would become one of the greatest heroes of the war. Audie Murphy was by all accounts a nobody. He and his family lived a quiet life, sticking to themselves and their farms. A young Murphy would simply help outside with the farm work, almost never wanting to be indoors. Once the war broke out, Murphy felt called to serve his country. He tried on several occasions to enlist in the Armed Forces underage as he was not of legal age to enlist. With the help of his sister, Corrine, he successfully enlisted in the military at the age of 17. He was given basic training, which he completed with ease. Audie Murphy s first war experience was in North Africa during the Allied offensive to remove Axis forces from the top of Africa. North Africa was a very important strategic point for both forces. If the Allies were successful in their push for control, it would be a very important starting point for an invasion of Fascist Italy, and ultimately Nazi Germany. Murphy s unit, however, saw no combat in North Africa due to the expulsion of Axis Forces from their final African foothold of Tunisia. Murphy was then sent to the island of ... • 6. Improving China s Image Through Advertisement 4.2 Creative advertising to create the image of a strong brand Research Question 2: Can China create international advertisements that would be conducive to advancing its global image and make use of soft power? It has been well established by marketers and economists that a successful ad campaign is able to localize to the target audience and communicate messages in line for the respective society. Advertisements often sell more of a concept of an ideal goal that concept can vary slightly or dramatically from country to country, but its importance is undeniable. For example, the company, Kentucky Fried Chicken, owned by Yums Food Crops previously dominated in China, where the fast food market is now worth $174 billion, and... Chinese companies must also find a means to balance marketing capacity and maintaining its unique identity and simultaneously encoding the message in such a fashion that it should be easily decoded by target audiences. An example of this would be exercises programs such as Birkam Yoga; a hot yoga program was created by Bikram Choudhury. Yoga traditionally originates from India, but has managed to seep its way into the crevasses of societies around the world from the United States to South Korea. Most Yoga advertisements focus on the increased health benefits of the exercise, which is a matter of prime importance in many nations regardless of cultural customs, because of clever marketing focused on a matter of international interest, Yoga programs have managed to sell while keeping a unique identity. China is a nation with a dynamic and rich history over 5,000 years worth in fact. This works to both China s advantage and disadvantage. It has been noted that the most profitable films China related tend to be kung fu films, while such films are not a holistic representation of the nation from past to present, it does provide precedence for ways to integrate a traditional culture with international societies. Directors such as Zhang Yimou and kung fu celebrities such as Jackie Chan and Jet Lee are as much a part of China s cinematographic history as the worlds. • 7. Unit 8 Support First Company As outlined in the advertisement and selection model the Support First Company is looking for someone to fill the void left from a staff member taking Parental Leave. The company has selected a performance based model because they need the applicant who fills this position to be able to start straight away and pick up the responsibilities as soon as the staff member leaves to go on parental leave. However, they have indicated that they are willing to be flexible to an extent if no successful applicant is identified within these selection cut offs. The cut offs the company is willing to be flexible with are those which are knowledge based and can be learnt on the job (HR and clerical knowledge). However, the company wants to be sure that the selected applicant is trainable and still has knowledge in HR and clerical roles. For this reason two factors will be considered before applying some flexibility. 1)The cut off for both HR and clerical knowledge is applicant pool based. I believe that it is called the Heaven s Gate Mass Suicides but whatever it is, it is super creepy. Apparently, police found thirty nine men dead at a rental home in Rancho Santa Fe. The person who rented it out thought it was for a religious group, but nobody could find evidence to prove it. The estate looks really expensive too from ten to twenty thousand a month ( 39 )! The news said that all of the men were particularly young, from 18 to 24 years old. All of the people who died were wearing dark clothing, tennis shoes, and lying in a prone position. The Constitutionalisation of the Treaties by the European Court of Justice Introduction ============ On it s formation in 1957 the European Economic Community Treaty[1] was seemingly another international treaty to which the six original Member States[2] had signed. In the realm of international law such treaties are binding merely on the governments of Member States which have signed them. In it s essential provisions, the Treaty made reference only to the Member States who themselves had no reason to believe this Treaty would be any different. The interpretation of Article 234 In Van Gend en Loos v Nederlandse Administratie der Balastigen[8], the plaintiff, a Dutch firm, tried to invoke Article 12 (now 25)[9] of the EC Treaty before a Dutch tribunal, the Tariefcommissie. Firstly, Whether Article 12…has direct application within the territory of a Member State, in other words, whether nationals of such a State can, on the basis of the article in question, lay claim to individual rights which the courts must protect .[10] It was argued by the Dutch and Belgian Governments that this reference concerned the application of the Treaty and not it s interpretation as required by Article 234, and hence that the Court had no jurisdiction to consider it. The query, they considered, as a matter of Dutch constitutional law, should be answered by the Dutch national courts, subject to Articles 226 and 227, which allow the Commission and Member States to challenge actions of other Member States. Both films chose not to portray easily recognizable tourist or popular areas of the city that would allow the audience to distinguish exactly what city the film took place in plays an important role (Chetin, 2016). The use of innovative camera techniques utilized within both the films have a significant impact in the films success in appealing to a global transnational audience. The innovative camera techniques used do not utilize the realist style that was previously associated with films dealing with social deprivation; however, it does use identifiable genre characteristics, but in a way that is more specific for that location (Anon, 2016). The film editing creates a world and a feeling that absorbs the audience and transports them to a place they have never been to. The opening scene begins with a nice atmosphere of people playing music and dancing. Then it is seen from the chicken s perspective. It watches as the knives sharpen and other chickens are being killed. It runs away and can be seen as symbolizing Rocket s attempt to flee from the gang life. The mixture of the camera angles builds up suspense. The variation of high and low angles accentuate the disordered way the city is built up from different layers of houses, small shacks and streets. • 11. The Central Problems Of International Politics ne of the central problems of international politics is that of cooperation or lack of cooperation. Though, cooperation is not always possible or a welcome idea when it comes to states making decisions. Creating and claiming value are two of the most fundamental aspects of negotiation strategy that exist, but there is tension with one another. In any negotiation, the delegates need to decide which course of action to take whether that be competitive, cooperative, or some of both. David Lax and James Sebenius call this the negotiator s dilemma. It is similar to the prisoners dilemma in game theory, because this is a way of using rational choice and strategic thinking to describe situations. In a book written by D. Lax and J. Sebenius The Manager as Negotiator: The Negotiator s Dilemma: Creating and Claiming Value, the authors argue that negotiation includes both cooperative and competitive elements, and that these elements exist in tension. The dilemma in this situation is in deciding whether to pursue a cooperative or a competitive strategy. The authors suggest several strategies to resolve this dilemma, and how to encourage cooperative approaches to creating mutually beneficial outcomes. Conflict analysts tend to view negotiations either as a matter of cooperating to create value, or as a matter of competing to claim values. However essential differences, while they are not always clear do exist between these competitors. The human resources strategy of Home Depot is more prevalent than Lowes in my estimation. While the error bars did overlap on tubes two and three, the trend of the data supports the hypothesis and prediction. At 0 degrees Celsius, enzymes can still function, but do so at a much slower rate. Cold does not cause the breakdown of the tertiary structure as heat does, but this is not an optimal temperature for enzymes to function. At 23 degrees Celsius, the rate of the enzyme activity speeds up, and then goes up again at 37 degrees, which is the ideal temperature of human beings. This is also the ideal temperature range for enzymes to function. Molecular collisions that bind the enzyme and the substrate speed up in this temperature range, allowing for more bonding to occur due to the increase in kinetic energy (Santhtosh, unk). At 55 degrees, the hydrogen and peptide bonds that create the enzyme break down, destroying the tertiary structure of the enzyme. The substrate can no longer bond because there is no active site for it to fit into. The enzyme is denatured, or broken down to amino acids so the body can recylce the proteins for other uses (RSC, 2015). The Finite Element Method has also been used to evaluate anterior vaginal wall support, and the mechanisms underlying cystocele formation [5]. Precise segmentation of pelvic magnetic resonance images (MRI) is an important step in building the three dimensional (3D) reconstructed structural models suitable for computational analysis. Segmentation consists of outlining each organ or tissue of interest from the underlying grayscale images on each slice in the dataset. The 3D reconstructed models are currently generated from manually segmented label maps, which currently require multiple hours of tedious manual segmentation to produce each reconstructed 3D model. This manual segmentation bottleneck limits the number of computational models that can be reliably produced in a timely manner, thereby limiting the number of study subjects available for the kind of statistical comparisons that can potentially lead to clinically meaningful insight. Character Strength in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a novel about survival. Solzhenitsyn shows us how even in seemingly atrocious circumstances each person can find sources of strength that gives them the will to carry on. Many of the things that the prisoners think of as their sources of strengths would mean nothing to us, but if one thinks about it, without them we would perhaps lose the will to carry on. Most of the prisoners have more than one source of strength, perhaps subconsciously they have made their own fail safes. If they lost one source, they would have other more personal reasons to carry on. The two main factors of strength that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shukhov does not seem like a religious man, but as one goes further into the novel, one begins to see him taking a bigger interest in religion, and more importantly, faith. Alyosha tries to show Shukhov that faith is the strongest source of strength, and he tells Shukhov to try to see the importance of spiritual goods rather than material goods. However, objects have a lot of importance to all of the prisoners. Aloysha hides his New Testament to avoid it being confiscated just Shukhov hides his bread. This shows us that the Bible is as important to Alyosha as bread is to Shukhov. At the end of the novel Shukhov gives away a biscuit to Alyosha and expects nothing in return. This shows that he has taken Alyosha s advice and has chosen to feel spiritual accomplishment rather than keeping the material good. Property is another source of strength in the novel. Possessing something that other prisoners do not have is a way of showing individuality in a place where all the prisoners are marked as the same, ignoring what they have or have not done. Shukhov s spoon is also very symbolic. Shukhov is forced to hide the spoon in order to keep it from being taken by the guards. In a way this shows us how the camp tries to take away anything that gives the prisoners a sense of individuality, or anything that gives them happiness. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each writer expresses a different point of view: It is a story reflecting teen ager s talk thoughts emotions actions; or angst. I believe it is an adult s reflection of his own unresolved grief and bereavements. That adult is the author, J.D. Salinger. He uses his main character, Holden, as the voice to vent the psychological misery he will not expose or admit to. The book is, he claims, All about suicide and silence (31). I found Ambrosio s correlations to be very telling and supportive of my thesis. Early in Salinger s life, he faced one the cultural illnesses widespread in the North Eastern states of America. It was the virulent disease of anti Semitism. Salinger lived in New York City, where he was raised as the son of Jewish parents. The 1920 s and 1930 s were a time in America when Anti Semitism was written into the policies of many institutions. His heritage automatically deprived him from attending the best colleges: Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth. Reporters and editors, trying to interview Salinger about his early life, ran into a prickly silent wall. Margaret, his daughter reveals why. • 35. A Study On Bacterial Transformation Bacterial Transformation Fiona Obas 5155246 U42 Abstract DNA encodes the genetic instructions for cells to carry out their daily activities. DNA can come in many forms; plasmids for example are small circular DNA molecules found in most bacterial cells. Though plasmids may not be essential for the life of bacteria, it can give cells resistance in foreign environments. For the purpose of this experiment, an ampicillin resistant plasmid is introduced to E. coli. This is done through a process of genetic engineering called transformation. Transformation works through the uptake, incorporation, and expression of a foreign gene to alter the genetic code of a cell. Three conditions are needed for successful transformation: a host, a vector, and a technique to identify the transformed cells. E. coli is used in this experiment as the host (E. coli is commonly used in biotechnology due to its rapid rate of growth and short reproduction time). A vector mediates the transfer of foreign DNAinto the host cell. Plasmids are commonly used vectors that will also be used in this experiment. The procedure of tagging is used in this experiment to differentiate the transformed cells from those that were not. The learning objectives of this experiment are to: observe the process of bacterial transformation in an experiment; and demonstrate a change in phenotype due to uptake and expression of the genes in a known plasmid. Compare And Contrast The Movie And Maria Full Of Grace The film, Maria full of grace and the book, Open Veins of Latin America share a plethora of similarities and differences, however, what these two substances do is substantially support each other. Although the film is a work of fiction, the movie does an excellent job in supplementing the information that is offered in the book which will be explained further in the essay. A major difference between the book and the film is that the film seems to be more personal while the book is more impersonal. To begin, the film Maria full of grace, presents a young woman, Maria who lives in a household where it is seen that her family is struggling financially and that her family essentially relies on her and her mother for financial income. It could be inferred from the film that the family is struggling because once Maria quit her job in the factory, her mother and sister whom who has a child are appalled at this act. This film touch base on how being struggling financially would lead you to perform jobs that aren t exactly legal. Not only were they being grouped, it was being publicized on talk shows, through music, books, movies, news outlets and many more forms of media. What the upper class people failed to see when they were stereotyping was, While these labels developed in different contexts and are sometimes used in different ways, they have evolved into virtually synonymous labels demarcating a problematic whiteness polluted by poverty and rural culture (Southern Rock Musicians: Construction of White Trash Pg.207). When America today sees a Confederate Flag being flown or displayed, there is usually a controversy that occurs. People in todays society still believe that it is a symbol of racism and just inappropriate to be flying considering our country s history. Obviously not much has changed since the 1970 s. People back then believed it was racial bigotry and a symbol of uneducated white trash. To an extent this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
