In preparing for the AMLE 2015 National Conference my intent was to get
inspiration, and to find something I could use in class and also share with co teachers
I m in a unique position in that I teach at an online school, ECOT, and much of what
is presented at conferences applies well to a brick and mortar school, but needs
adaptation to work for my classroom and my students. I knew finding information to

The energy during the General Session while Marcia Tate spoke inspired me to go to

percentages swapped. Having Highland ISD s black, Latino/Hispanic, Asian, or
Pacific ethnicities just below the 15% margin and Dallas ISD s non white ethnicities
soaring above 94%, the clear distinction of racial inequality among these two districts
are evident. Comparing these percentages aligns to Kozol s evaluation of white
overpopulation in affluent schools within different districts such as Highland ISD.

There were two things I took away from the article, the first being finding out the
root cause of where self concept stemmed from. For example, according to the
article self concept is first shaped by our mother; we respond back with decisions or
judgments based on our initial experiences from our first caregiver. A child who had
an unresponsive mother will act obnoxious or withdrawn so that people will want to
keep their distance. Those with consistently responsive mothers are confident and
